THE problem of establishing practical techniques for evaluating natural corundum ores arose from the desire to improve the existing purchase specifications for crystal corundum procured by the Federal Government for stockpiling. Such purchase specifications had been developed for a large number of products, including minerals and ores considered to be critical and strategic because of the country's dependence on foreign sources of supply. It will be apparent to anyone considering the subject of purchase specifications that the determination of whether or not a submittal meets the specifications is a prime consideration. Consequently satisfactory specifications for minerals should not only incorporate physical, chemical, and mineralogical requirements that are practical but should also establish the means by which both buyer and seller can be assured that materials meet stated requirements.

The Cartersville barite district is near Cartersville, Ga., in the southeastern part of Bartow County, about 43 miles northeast of Atlanta. The area over which active mining is being done extends about six miles in a northeasterly direction and is about three miles wide. Barite production in Georgia began about 1907,' but the existence of the mineral was known much earlier. At present four companies are operating washing plants and three other plants are operating on leases from those companies. The chief impurities in the ores are silica and iron oxide. The silica is easily washed and jigged out and gives little trouble. Any gravity separation between the iron and the barite is generally poor, owing to the slight difference in specific gravity. Two operators have turned to magnetic separation as the solution to the problem and have made remarkable improvements in the finished product. By very close sizing prior to jigging, the separation between iron and barite has been greatly improved. In some localities manganese occasionally appears as an impurity, but is fairly easy to eliminate by gravity methods. A considerable percentage of iron and silica is eliminated by being broken free in crushing. Until methods for the recovery of fine ore were introduced a minimum of crushing was done, but modern methods allow more than formerly. The depression years brought about the need for increased recovery of ore handled on the part of the producers and a demand for a higher grade of product on the part of the buyers. Improvements in milling and mining practice have had a far greater effect, however, than merely the production of a better grade of ore with greater recovery. They have opened for mining large areas that a few years ago were considered noncommercial deposits because of their inaccessibility and their high iron content. It is no exaggeration to say that the new methods have more than doubled present known reserves of barite ore of economic value.

Long freezing range casting alloys are particularly susceptible to a type of porosity which is observed to form in layers parallel to the supposed position of the isotherms in the solidifying casting. Under favorable conditions (which appear to be typified by low-temperature gradients in the casting giving rise to a wide and more or less uniform pasty zone, and which arise from several factors, particularly: a) wide freezing range alloy, b) high thermal conductivity of metal, c) low thermal conductivity of mold, and d) high mold temperature3) layer porosity has been observed in many different casting alloys: copper,' aluminum, magnesium,' steels, and high-temperature alloys.3 Baker4,5 and later cibula6 argue that layer porosity occurs because of thermal contraction, in a manner analogous to hot tearing. In outline, the theory consists of the establishment of a coherent dendrite network by the impinging of dendrite tips. Subsequent shrinkage imposes tensile stresses on the network which tears perpendicularly to the stress, i.e., parallel to the isotherms. If these tears are not filled by the inflow of residual liquid then layers of porosity result. Baker7 attempted to test whether the porosity was the result of thermal contraction by casting test pieces in a mold designed to accentuate hot tearing. However, no significant increase in porosity was observed. This negative result of Baker's critical experiment appears to be substantiated by numerous observations, particularly the experiments by Lagowski and Meier8 on Mg-Zn alloys covering the range of zinc contents up to 30 pct Zn. These clearly reveal that the maxima for the incidence of hot tearing and layer porosity are well-separated, occurring at 1 and 6 pct Zn, respectively. Furthermore, the thermal contraction maximum occurred at 1 pct Zn, indicating that hot tearing is associated with contraction in the solid state, and not with porosity. These observations are further substantiated by the elementary consideration that the thermal contraction of the casting is likely to produce (if anything, since the temperature difference across casting of high thermal conductivity, such as aluminum and copper, is likely to be negligible) a compressive stress on the

MANY of the magnesite ores of the western part of the United States contain such large amounts of silica and hydrous silicate minerals that the value of the ores is either low or nominal. Expensive and carefully controlled mining methods are necessary to prevent excessive dilution of the higher grade ores by introduction in mining of small pieces of the hanging walls or footwalls of the deposit. This difficulty is further complicated by the various states of decomposition of the country rock of the deposits in which many of the ores occur. The problem the authors attempted to solve arose from a request to float an impure magnesite containing varying proportions of siliceous gangue with calcium carbonate. The ore is normally enclosed in-serpen-tine masses, somewhat decomposed, and in mining it wall rock is inci-dentally added, so that variable amounts of siliceous material occur in the samples. The silica, alumna, and iron oxide are so closely associated with the magnesium carbonate in the magnesite that ordinary mechanical separation at coarse mesh sizes is of no avail. It is well known that calcium carbonate can be floated by suitable reagents, therefore it seemed reasonable to suppose that magnesium carbonate minerals would behave in a similar manner, but experimental trial proved that this supposition was unfounded. Therefore the first step in the problem was to find out what differences of behavior there were between magnesium and calcium carbonates under flotation conditions, or when suspended in water. In water at 18° C. magnesium carbonate is slightly more soluble than calcium carbonate; in fact; MgCO3 is soluble to the extent of 0.0106 grams in 100 c.c. of water at 18° C. and CaCO3 to the extent of 0.0013 grams. However, magnesium carbonate in water gradually changes to the basic carbonates of a composition (3MgCO3.Mg(OH)23H20) or (4MgCO3.Mg(OH)25H20), depending upon conditions, and calcium carbonate to calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the subject of Stress-Corrosion Cracking at the Joint Symposium of the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. In this Symposium we are concerned with spontaneous cracking which results from the combined effect of high, prolonged stress, and corrosive attack. Stress-corrosion cracking may be considered a specific phase of the more general subject of the effect of high constant stresses in accelerating the rate of corrosion of metal products. The kindred subject of corrosion fatigue in which the life of a metal part under repeated stresses is reduced by corrosive attack is not a part of this Symposium. Likewise "creep," the failure of a metal part by high constantly applied stress, in the absence of a corrosive environment, is not to be included. How- ever, corrosive influences may have more effect on creep failures than is sometimes realized. The penetration by molten metals such as often occurs during tinning or soldering operations, or by mercury, frequently causes cracking when the part is stressed. Strictly speaking this is not stress-corrosion cracking. However, the committee has decided that this phenomenon should be included in the Symposium. THE relation of labor to the accident rate in mines is admirably epitomized by Thomas T. Read in his paper presented at the St. Louis meeting, in the sentence "Reliance for accident prevention must be upon the individual worker himself." In connection with the inspection of mines for the fixing of merit premium rates for insurance under workmen's compensation, it has been the practice of The Associated Companies to allow 60 per cent.of the credits for safeguarding of the physical hazards of the mine and 40 per cent. for the human element. By "human element" is meant. that inherent tendency of the industrial worker to be careless, negligent or disobedient, in respect to his own safety, and after that also f his fellow workman. This is a tendency not only of the laborer or of the skilled miner, but of all human beings, working or traveling, anywhere. This element of mine safety, sometimes called the moral hazard, has been admirably shown by statistics compiled from the records of the Department of Mines of the Union of South Africa to be clue in about equal measure to the carelessness of the miner and to that of the operator. These statistics show that about one-half the fatalities in mines are clue to the so-called hazard of the industry, or what is sometimes called the dangers inherent to work or misadventure. Of 2497 fatalities investigated, including over 200,000 employees, for a period of over 2 ½ years, it was found that 17.5 per cent. were due to faulty plant or material, fault of the foreman, or of the management-in short were-clue to the operator; 17.1 per cent. to disobedience of orders, carelessness or ignorance of injured persons; and 5.9 per cent. through fault of others, including fellow workmen. The fault of the operator is evidenced by failure to give proper warning, failure to inspect, failure to furnish proper equipment, and neglecting to comply with the recommendations of the inspector. The subject of this paper implies three questions: whether regulation is necessary; if so, what sort of regulation is wise; and, finally, by what government the power to regulate is to be exercised. In the year 1937 emphasis falls on the third of those questions. This contrasts with the situation prevailing a dozen years ago, when the question was whether regulation was necessary at all; and with the situation a few months ago, when the third question seemed answered by the Supreme Court decisions on the National Recovery Act, Agricultural Adjustment Act and Guffey Coal Control Act, and by the ratification of the Interstate Oil Compact. It then appeared settled that the State and not the Federal Government possessed the regulatory powers and, granting that conservation measures are a recognized necessity, the problem seemed to be to develop the wisest kind of regulation that the Constitution would permit. Today, by virtue of developments during the first months of 1937, the oil industry is faced again by the question of whether the Federal Government is to have power to control its operations, along with those of the other basic industries. Developments in Governmental Control There have been three recent developments. The dominating one is the President's proposal that he be authorized to increase the size of the Supreme Court to 15 members. The implications of that plan ought to be perfectly plain to the oil industry. This suggestion is made in lieu of offering an amendment to the Constitution, to reverse the Supreme Court decisions mentioned. In those decisions the Court held that production does not constitute commerce, and hence that the Federal power to regulate interstate commerce does not extend to the regulation of production. These holdings were contrary to the Government's contention that the stream of commerce begins in the factory and ends with the consumer and may be regulated at any point from beginning to end. That position was urged in the Government briefs in Amazon Petroleum Co. v. Ryan, defending the petroleum code, and repeated as late as Feb. 10, 1937, in the case of National Labor Relations

THE present paper is a progress report. on an investigation of the physical factors of oil and gas and especially of their sands, I such as-pore space, size of pores or permeability, retentivity, viscosity of the oil, temperature, pressure, thickness and area of the pay sand, water relations, and capillarity. The purpose is to determine as many of these physical factors as possible, and to ascertain the relations existing, directly or indirectly, between these physical factors and the production of oil and gas. As yet only pore space2 and size of grains of pay sands have, been investigated, although an apparatus has been designed to determine the permeability of a sand to oil, water, or gas under definite drops of pressure between the entrance face and exit face of the sample. Messrs. E. W. Shaw, R. Van A. Mills, D. Dale Condit, G. B. Richardson, G. C. Matson, and C. H. Wegemann collected the samples upon which the physical determinations were made. Acknowledgment is made to my colleagues of the United States Geological Survey for many suggestions and criticisms; to Mr. Mills for the production data given of the oil wells from which some of the samples were collected; to Mr. A. So commonplace that they are seldom noticed, mining-machine bits have a defi-nite and important bearing on the cost of coal production. At the average mine many thousands of bits are used during the year. The actual cost represented by the pur-chase of the bits used, as well as that of sharpening and handling them, represents a considerable sum of money. From the point of view of indirect costs they are im-portant, as the lack of good bits at a mining machine can seriously impair production. Good bits tend to ensure an adequate supply of coal.

A statistically designed, experimental study showed how gangue minerals, flux additions, fineness of grind, firing temperature, and time affect the properties of acid pellets made from a Western Australian hematite ore. Alumina has less effect than silica and lime, but interactions between the six variables occur, which influence abrasion index, reducibility, and cold compression strength. Finer grinding has little influence on reducibility but improves the other two properties. The major variable is firing temperature, which interacts with all other variables to affect pellet properties. Calculations based on the data show the implications for straight-grate pellet plants and optimum hood temperature ranges.

Allocation of allowed production in a prorated field by the use of bottom-hole pressures is a method which is sound in theory. Thus far it has had limited application because the experience in correlating bottom-hole pressures with the depletion of wells or fields is not sufficient to interpret all the pressure changes. With additional data and more general knowledge of bottom-hole pressures their use in proration will probably become common. Bottom-hole pressure is the pressure at or near the bottom of a well. It is usually determined at the face of the producing horizon. Bottom-hole pressure measured while the well is producing, may be called the bottom-hole producing pressure or bottom-hole flowing pressure. If the well has been shut in or shut down long enough for the pressure in the producing horizon within the drainage area of the well to equalize, it may be called the reservoir pressure. The allowable production from a prorated field may be allocated to the individual wells or leases by three methods: 1. Bottom-hole producing or flowing pressures. (a) The potential capacity of a well to produce. (b) A uniform differential pressure while producing at the allowed rate. 2. Reservoir pressures. 3. A combination of bottom-hole producing pressures and reservoir pressures. In most prorated fields the allowed production is allocated to the individual wells or leases in proportion to their individual potentials. This method is based on the theory that there is a direct relationship between the permeability and the porosity of the reservoir. More directly stated it means that there is a direct relationship between the amount of oil in the reservoir and the rate at which it will move through the reservoir. While in general this relationship is true, it may vary considerably in different wells. Furthermore, in many wells the capacity of the reservoir to deliver oil to the well is greater than the capacity of the flow string to deliver oil to the surface. It is especially true where the potential is determined by flowing through tubing or by pumping.

Burma has long been known for its ruby, tungsten, and tin deposits, and, lately, for having the largest lead-zinc mine in the world, the Bawd-win mine of the Burma Corpn. All the coal used, however, is imported from Calcutta; this is a bituminous coal of about 11,000 B.t.u., 24 per cent. ash, and costs about $8 per ton. Bituminous coal has not, thus far, been found, but many lignite deposits are known. The most promising lignite deposits are in the Namma field, Fig. 1, situated in the Northern Shan States of Upper Burma, about 30 mi. south of Lashio, the terminus of the Burma Railway, 750 mi. north of Rangoon. What is the economic basis for direct, continuous particle size measurement and control? First, precise grinding control is necessary to achieve and maintain a specified recovery and throughput. Second, throughput and recovery are direct functions of particle size-and these two factors control the economic performance of the ore concentration process. Third, only size-based control using a particle size and percent solids monitor (PSM) has achieved the necessary precise control. Recovery, throughput and cost can be accurately measured for various concentrator operating conditions if particle size is closely controlled. From such data the economic results of different particle size grind points can be analyzed. This will reveal the best combination of recovery and throughput to meet objectives established by financial management. Predictable, repeatable response to set-point selection is essential if the projected profitability of the mill is to be reached.

Rock bolts are commonly used to support and stabilize the rock around excavated openings. The assumption is made that the less competent rock near the surface can be supported by bolting it to more competent rock away from the surface. Naturally, a rock bolt can be no more effective than its anchoring mechanism which induces a stress field into the surrounding rock. Details of various types of bolts have been described e1sewhere.l The purpose of the present investigation is to study the stress distribution around an expansion-type rock bolt anchor, using the theory of elasticity. The elastic stress distribution provides some insight into the behavior of rock bolt anchors which may eventually lead to improved designs. Very little information is available on the induced stress field which is rather complex; consequently, photoelastic techniques have been used to obtain a qualitative picture of the stress ditribution.2 The present work provides quantitative information on the stress field induced by an idealized distribution of surface tractions, provided that the assumptions of the linear theory of elasticity are approximately satisfied. FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM Consider an elastic region which extends to infinity and contains a circular cylindrical hole as shown in Fig. 1. I N the development of iron mines and production of iron ore from the Marquette range, drilling blast-holes is an important phase of the mining cycle. The ground drilled in ore production can be classified into two main categories, soft hematite and hard hematite or magnetite. Within these categories the material exhibits a wide range of penetrability by percussion drills. Development work encounters various types of rock. Slate and altered basic intrusives constitute the softer types commonly encountered. Harder materials are represented mainly by greywacke, quartzite, iron formation, and diorite.

As stated in the preface, the nomenclature to be adopted for weights and measures has presented great difficulty. Agricola uses, throughout, the Roman and the Romanized Greek scales, but in many cases he uses these terms merely as lingual equivalents for the .German quantities of his day. Moreover the classic language sometimes failed him, whereupon he coined new Latin terms adapted from the Roman scale, and thus added further confusion. We can, perhaps, make the matter dearer by an illustration of a case in weights. The Roman centumpondium, composed of zoo librae, the old German ceniner of 100 pfundt, and the English hundredweight of 1112 pounds can be called lingual equivalents. The first weighs about 494,600 Troy grains, the second 721,900, and the third 784,000. While the divisions of the centumpondium and the centner are the same, the Libra is divided into 12 unciae and the pfundt into 16 unizen, and in most places a summation of the units given proves that the author had in mind the Roman ratios. However, on p. 509 he makes the direct statement that the centumpondium weighs 146 librae, which would be about the correct weight if the centumpondium referred to was a ceniner. If we take an example such as " each centumpondium of lead contains one uncia of silver", and reduce it according to purely lingual equivalents, we should find that it runs 24.3 Troy ounces per short ton, on the basis of Roman values, and 18.25 ounces per short ton, on the basis of old German. If we were to translate these into English lingual equivalents of one ounce per hundredweight, then the value would be 17.9 ounces per short ton. [ ]

MANGANESE ore is a true jack-of-all trades among industrial minerals, its only possible rival being iron ore. It is used in porcelain enamel, dry batteries, building brick, glazed pottery, floor tile, plastics, welding rods, chemicals, and varnish. You may be reading this through spectacles decolorized with manganese, and the light bulb above you contains some of this element. GEOLOGY Nearly all commercial manganese oxide deposits are of secondary origin; that is, they are concentrated by weathering from other manganese minerals more sparsely distributed in veins. The oxide minerals usually form irregular masses but in some places (Russia) they occur as beds of varying thickness and purity. Some manganese oxide bodies occur in soft gravel or clay formations but in other places the minerals are found in the form of veins and rounded nodules in limestone and other hard rocks. The geologic features of manganese deposits closely resemble those of iron deposits. Classification of the deposits is shown in the following table: I. The possibility of applying a neutron activation technique for silver exploration is considered. A mobile positive-ion accelerator type neutron source is used to irradiate a small area of rock or soil in situ. By using a short period of irradiation and gamma ray spectral analysis, a technique is shown for silver exploration. Two different mobile units are described. Laboratory and preliminary field tests both indicate that a sensitivity of less than 1 oz of silver per ton of ore can be achieved. The increasing consumption of silver for industrial uses and also for coinage has caused a serious shortage of silver in this country. The silver shortage has been reviewed and analyzed by kiilsgaard1 who concludes that, "The best hope for meeting future demands for silver is through accelerated exploration for precious ores." As almost all the exposed "bonanza" type silver deposits evidently have been found, it is urgent that some sensitive geophysical technique be found to detect large, extended, but generally low-grade, secondary ores, as well as hidden vein deposits. Silver is easily made radioactive by exposure to slow neutrons; hence a neutron activation method appears promising for locating silver deposits. The principles of mineral beneficiation using neutron activation techniques were discussed some years ago.2-4 Using the same approach, a preliminary description5 has been published of neutron activation as a mineral exploration tool. An exploration technique is described in which silver is made radioactive in situ and detected with a gamma radiation counter. The technique is similar to the well-known method used for uranium exploration. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS Elemental silver consists of two isotopes, Ag107 and Ag109, having naturally occurring isotopic abundances of 51.4% and 48.6%, respectively. For short periods of irradiation of silver by thermal neutrons, the long-lived 250 day, half-life isotope, Ag110m, is not produced in significant quantities. However, significant quantities of 2.3 min half-life Ag108 and 24.5 sec half-life Agl10 are formed by the following reactions. Ag108 and Agl10 emit a 0.44 Mev (million electron volts) and a 0.66 Mev gamma ray, respectively. Ag107 + n + Ag108 (2.3 min) Ag109 + n + Ag110 (24.5 sec). Because of the large capture cross section (110 barns) of Ag109, and short half-life of Ag110 (24.5 sec), the 0.66-Mev gamma ray is the most prominent emission from silver for neutron activation periods of about a minute's duration.* The 0.44-Mev gamma ray from Ag108 will also be present, but will be one or two orders of magnitude lower in intensity. The decay scheme of Ag110 is shown in Fig. 1. If the neutron irradiation time is limited to about 100 sec, the Ag110 activity will essentially reach saturation and can be used to detect the presence of silver. In a neutron flux of 10 8 neutrons/cm2/set, the induced 0.66-Mev activity in 1 g of silver will be about 2 x 107 disintegrations per sec. This is about 1000 times the measurable gamma activity of 1 g of uranium in equilibrium with all its decay products; hence there is ample activity for detection. Under the same conditions of activation, most of the other elements do not reach this relatively high disintegration rate. Although this is in favor of the proposed technique, other problems must be considered. For mobile operation, it is desirable to obtain the largest neutron flux to weight ratio. Hence we have used a small 150-kev accelerator-type neutron source rather than an isotopic source such as an americium-beryllium neutron source. By use of remote control system, an accelerator-type neutron source can be safely used without the massive shield required for an isotopic source. Moreover, an accelerator-type source is more versatile in that it allows one to use a flux of either 14-Mev or 3-Mev neutrons, depending on whether a tritium or a deuterium target is used. With a 14-Mev generator, one can obtain a flux of 10 9 neutrons/cm 2/sec, and with a 3-Mev generator, the flux is generally two orders of magnitude less.
