WE must begin by defining what we mean by the Copperbelt. This term is generally used to denote that region of Northern Rhodesia in which the copper mines of that territory are situated. The first published use of the term Copperbelt we have been able to trace dates back to 1905. The African World of December of that year contained an article entitled "The Great Northern Copper Belts of Rhodesia." The next reference we have traced is in 1909 in an article in the Transactions of the Geo- logical Society of South Africa. It began to be used generally in the late twenties and by 1929 was in common use to denote the region which today contains the existing large copper mines of Northern Rhodesia. The first of three accompanying maps is a very simple outline map of Africa showing where Rhodesia is within Africa, and where the Copperbelt is within Rhodesia. The second is a larger scale map of the Copperbelt itself. It will be seen that within the present Copperbelt there are six producing mines. Two of these are new and four are relatively established, having started operations between the two world wars. The Copperbelt also includes a town- ship called Ndola, which is not a mining town, but a railhead on the main line. This town has developed primarily as a result of the mining industry in the neighborhood. It describes itself as the Gateway to the Copperbelt and is shortly to become a refining center.

This paper is an account of exploration for bauxite in the Amazon Basin, Brazil, and particularly of the discovery, exploration and development of the Trombetas deposits by Alcan. A general report of the Trombetas Project has already been published in E/MJ(Anon. 1975) to which the reader is referred for details on ownership, infrastructure and construction as well as the proposal for mining and treating the bauxite. A regional account of bauxite in and around the Guyana Shield and the northern part of the Brazilian Shield is included to help explain the geology of the Trombetas deposits and their relation to other bauxites in northern South America. It is suggested that all these deposits formed during Tertiary time under similar geologic conditions.

In selecting a particular stripping method the ultimate aim is the removal of material at the least possible cost. Accomplishment of this goal requires the careful consideration of many factors including geologic and topographic information, proximity of the stripping operation to waste disposal areas, possible problems of land reclamation, types of suitable equipment available, and auxiliary equipment requirements. 4.2-1. Selection of Stripping Methods. The size of an orebody and the distribution of values within that orebody normally will limit the variety of economical stripping methods which need to be considered. Much may depend upon the selectivity required in the mining due to the relationship between ore and overburden, as well as the character of the overburden itself. The following factors concerning the geologic nature and environment of an orebody, as well as the production requirements, must be determined before any selection of equipment is made: 1. The size of the orebody and distribution of the values within that orebody. Is the ore massive or scattered, bedded or disseminated, thick or thin? 2. The nature of the overburden to be removed. Is it a hard dense rock, bedded rock (thick or thin), friable material, earth, sand, elay, marsh, etc.? 3. The character and significance of geologic structures (fractures, faults, shear zones, etc.) associated with the ore occurrence. Are there water bearing formations with resulting water disposal problems? 4. In considering the nature of the overburden, including its alteration products, the physical or chemical conditions which, when combined with anticipated climatic conditions, may render certain equipment inoperable during unfavorable seasons.

THE phase Ti2Ni has been described by Laves and Wallbaum,1 who found the phase to be face-centered cubic with 96 atoms per cell, by Duwez and Taylor,2 who confirmed these observations and reported a lattice parameter of 11.333A, and by Rostoker,' who reported the structure to be isomorphous with the double carbide Fe,W,C, type E93, and to have a lattice parameter of 11.29A. In this study a group of isostructural phases has been found among alloys of certain second and third long-period transition elements. The systems investigated included all the combinations of zirconium and hafnium with the Group VIII elements rhodium, palladium, iridium, and platinum. There is evidence that many of these new Ti2Ni-type phases require oxygen for their stability in the temperature ranges in which they were studied. THE spontaneous polarization surveys dealt with in this paper were carried out near Guddadarangavvanahalli (lat. 14° I7' N.; long. 76° 24' E.) in Chitaldrug district, which forms part of the Chitaldrug schist belt. The occurrence of gold, copper, lead and antimony ores has been noticed for several years but efforts to exploit them have been unsuccessful, therefore some spontaneous polarization surveys were made in the hope of finding indications of workable ore bodies. The country examined has a rugged topography, with numerous hills on which there is little vegetation. The climate is generally dry, the average annual rainfall of the tract being about 25 in., of which 17 in. occurs during the southwest monsoon. The geological formations of the area pertain to an ancient schistose series known as the Dharwar system (Archean). Locally, the rock formations have been divided into three series1-the chloritic series (or the Chitaldrug formation), the clay series (or the G.R. formation) and the trap series (or the Jogimardi trap). The chloritic series includes a complex of altered ancient traps and volcanic agglomerates intermixed with some schists of sedimentary origin, all of which are highly metamorphosed. The lithological types of this series are mostly distinguishable as greenstone schists, calc-chloritic schists, slaty schists, ochery and calcareous micachlorite schists, with subordinate bands of secondary limestone. The clay series (G.R. formation) is made up of shaly and argillistic schists, lithomargic clays, sandstones and brecciated ferruginous quartzites. The Jogimardi trap is mostly of the nature of an epidiorite (hornblende diabase), which is distinctly intrusive in the form of large laccolithic and narrower dikelike masses. In addition to this trap, there are other minor intrusives such as the chalybitic trap, quartz porphyry and quartz reefs. The topographical and geological features of the area are noted on the map of Fig. I. The locations of some of the spontaneous polarization centers determined by the geophysical survey are indicated also. METHOD OF SURVEY AND APPARATUS EMPLOYED The spontaneous polarization surveys were carried out in the manner recommended by the Imperial Geophysical Experimental Survey.2 Preliminary reconnaissance was first carried out along a series of parallel traverse lines that were laid out over the area. A MAJOR difficulty in the experimental study of precipitation-hardening is the measurement of particle sizes too small to be easily resolved with the microscope. It has been shown recently, however, that magnetic measurements on copper-cobalt al- loys in the aged state can be used to determine the average volume, total volume, volume distribution, and shape of the ferromagnetic cobalt-rich particles, even though the particles are submicroscopic in size. r' These alloys also are known to exhibit considerable precipitation hardening. This paper reports some results on the dependence of the mechanical properties of such an alloy on the particle size, determined magnetically. It further illustrates the use of other magnetic measurements in interpreting structure changes occurring during deformation.

ALTHOUGH the element beryllium was discovered as the oxide by L. N. Vauquelin in 1797, this metallic element was not produced until about 1828, and then only as an impure powder. Thereafter the greatest single contributor to our early knowledge of beryllium was Lebeau who, in about 1899, made pure beryllium crystals by electrolysis of the fluoride and then beryllium copper by the arc-furnace reduction of beryllium oxide with carbon and copper. About twenty-five years later, under the impetus of the work done by Siemens-Halske, beryllium commenced to make relatively rapid gains in industrial importance, principally when alloyed with copper. At the present half century mark, its use is firmly established in beryllium copper and in X-ray disks of pure beryllium. Its use as a moderator in nuclear processes in piles is engaging experimental attention and might become important. Other minor uses, but increasing in interest, are in nickel-base or iron-base alloys as a strengthening agent; as a protective agent against oxidation in aluminum and magnesium-base alloys; and as a ceramic in the form of the pure fused oxide. A false start was made in the wide use of beryllium oxide as a fired fluorescent powder known as beryllium-zinc silicate, a component of the inside coating of fluorescent lamps. This application, wherein general use by the public attained some importance, was abandoned a few years ago. This action was a consequence of the uneasiness which had been generated during the past decade by the sometimes fatal health hazard to the pulmonary tract now generally attributed to beryllium and some of its compounds. Operations in the Texas Gulf Coast during the past year have resulted in the discovery of a number of new fields arid the extension of a few of the older fields, both by deeper drilling and by lateral development. Twenty-six new oil and gas-producing areas and discovery of oil or gas in three subsequently abandoned wells have been recorded for a total of 29 new fields of varying importance. Producing areas at Conroe, Manvel, Greta, Pierce Junction, Hastings, Dirks, Thompson, Batson, Mykawa, Tomball, Raccoon Bend, Samfordyce arid Saxct have been increased. Primary geologic studies followed by geophysical mapping or straight geophysical prospects have been responsible for the more important discoveries. These methods have further proved themselves an aid to limiting wildcatting to the more prospective areas and as the chief means to discover reserves in the future. Production for 1935 totaled 69,560,720 bbl. as compared with 60,850,-360 bbl. for 1934. Strict proration has been in force throughout the discovery of more oil than has been produced. The number of producing oil wells has steadily increased to 4851 at the end of 1935, as compared with 3858 at the end of 1934, owing in part to the prolonged life, because of proration. There were 1272 oil and gas wells completed during 1935, as against 835 in 1934. New Fields Pertinent data on the new fields discovered during 1935 are includrd in Tables 1 and 2. Introduction BELLE ISLE, located in the low sea marshes near Atchafalaya Bay, is the southeasternmost of the famous Five Salt Islands of Louisiana. Rising about 80 ft. (24 m.) above the level of the surrounding marsh and being some 800 acres (323 ha.) in extent, it constitutes a striking landmark on the low Gulf coast, and since the eighteenth century, when it played an important part in the operation of the buccaneers, it has been intermittently frequented by man. In 1897, the writer discovered the great mass of salt that underlies the island and shortly afterward pub-lished a brief account of the geology of Belle Isle and the neighboring salt islands.' In that paper he described principally the salt, but pointed out also the occurrence of petroleum and of sulphur in the strata above the salt. Since that time the island has been extensively explored by the drill, and the developments up to 1908 have been described by Veatch2 and Harris," and Knapp.4 The writer's early conclusions as to the probable presence of sulphur in considerable quantity have been confirmed by the later drilling, some of the wells having found quantities of gas containing sulphur dioxide and a number of sulphur-bearing strata as well. Under the stimulus of the present keen demand for sulphur for war purposes, a syndicate of New York capitalists was recently formed to explore the sulphur resources of the island in more detail. Under the writer's direction, six wells were drilled for this syndicate during the winter of 1916-17. The present paper presents briefly the results of this work and sums up the present knowledge of the geology of this highly interesting locality.

Since the beginning of the 20th century the world has been trying to find a new political system, even as it did at the end of the 18th century. The French Revolution instigated the destruction of absolute monarchies when Napoleon unwittingly showed the masses the advantages of freedom, as opposed to the abuses of unlimited power by the imperialists. In spite of advances in culture, science, and technology during the past 50 years, there is a hangover of laissez-faire economic principles. Failure to divert the trends of minority pressure groups has caused two world wars and is the basis for the current social unrest and turmoil. In the ebullition of ideas there have risen to the surface the dregs of ideas, old and new-Nazism, Fascism, Russian Communism-a hodgepodge of imperialistic, socialistic, communistic and capitalistic maneuverings where state monopoly of capital enables ruthless exploitation of the masses. The United States owes much of its industrial greatness to the work of pioneers in the mineral industries. The task of the pioneer was to locate and develop in a rude way the mineral resources of the nation. Today, mineral industries leaders are still in great demand, but for a different purpose-to direct intelligent utilization of the limited, waning, submarginal mineral resources. The first report on the slag viscosity work of the Bureau of Mines was made by one of the authors1 in 1916. It was concerned chiefly with the method of measurement. A paper2 on this phase of the work was presented to the Institute in February, 1917, and a similar paper3 was communicated to the Faraday Society. PuRpose and Scope of the Slag Viscosity Tables Following the development of a suitable method, the next step in the investigation was the measurement of slag viscosity over a wide range of temperature and composition, and the arrangement of this experimental data in the form of tables for the use of the blast-furnace operator. It is believed that this information, if used intelligently, should help the operator to reduce losses in production caused by off-grade pig iron, to improve fuel economy, to promote operating efficiency, and to extend present-day practice to meet the increasing need of smelting lean and complex ores. The Hasancelebi iron deposit in Eastern Turkey is a very low grade (average 20% oxide) magnetite body consisting of 720 million longtons of proven reserve at a 10% cut-off limit. The ore-bearing scapolitic oclcs cover an area of approximately 4300m x 300m, and the thickness of the outcropping deposit exceeds 300m. Prefeasibility project studies revealed that a one degree decrease in a 45° final slope angle of the proposed pit would require excavation of approximately 10 million cubic meters of excess waste material, for a projected pit bottom 300 meters below the valley floor. There- fore, determination of the final slope angles of the open pit was considered to be the most important task in the feasibility analysis of this project. In this investigation, the main emphasis was given to collection, compilation and evaluation of the engineering geological, hydrogeological and rock mechanics data of the highly fractured and weathered rocks. Due to the presence of intense fracturing, the rock wedge analysis method was used for projected 30m-high benches and the circular failure analysis method was used for the stability of the projected final pit slopes. The proposed bench slope angles ranged between 60° and 80°, whereas the projected final slope angles varied between 30° and 48°, depending on the slope heights and groundwater levels.

Few phase diagrams of alloys composed of two transition metals have been adequately studied, probably because of the high melting points involved. Transition metals are the elements that have inner shells incompletely filled with electrons. They comprise groups lIIa to VIIIa of the periodic table, including more than half of all metals. We have chosen to study two systems whose comparatively low melting points allowed the alloys to be melted in a molybdenum resistance furnace. The nickel-palladium system proved to consist of a simple series of solid solutions, but iron-palladium manifested several remarkable features. The main characteristics of the latter diagram were decisively established, but lack of time prevented precise determination of phase boundaries. The gamma to alpha transformation in this system is unusual and warrants further study. Grigorjewl determined the liquidus and solidus of the iron-palladium system by thermal methods. He found a minimum melting point, but no eutectic. He also found that palladium lowered the gamma to alpha and raised the gamma to delta transformation temperatures of iron, with a complete series of solid solutions existing between gamma iron and palladium. His measurements also indicated a compound or quptbr-lattice near the composition FePda. Jellinghausz found that annealing at 500" C. greatly increased 111 magnetic coercive force of an alloy of composition FePd. X-ray diffraction photographs showed that a tetragonal ordered phase had formed during the anneal. Hocart and Fallot made magnetic measurements over the entire range of composition. The estimated product of iron-ore in 1888 throughout the world was, in round numbers, 50,000,000 gross tons, of which the United States produced about one-fourth. Great Britain leads this country in production by about 15 per cent., but the output of the United States is practically equal to that of Spain, France, Russia, Austria and Hungary combined. We produced last year nearly twice as much iron-ore as Spain, with all her exports; and we mined 20 per cent. more than Germany and Luxemburg. In addition to the domestic iron-ores consumed in this country, 587,470 gross tons of foreign ore was imported, and the amount of mill-cinder used in blast-furnaces is estimated at 450,000 gross tons. The total quantity of iron-ore required in 1888 for blast-furnaces, rolling-mills and other purposes in the United States was approximately 12,700,000 gross tons. The purpose of this paper is to indicate the principal sources of this supply, and call attention to the extent of mining operations covering many years in certain localities, which, although some of them now produce but a small proportion' of the above total, have in the aggregate added very largely to the material

Tunneling methods through rock have, since the successful development of explosives, relied almost solely on blasting. Over the last ten years, rock-tunneling machines (moles) have been developed and some major projects have been carried out successfully with the use of such machines, which rely on the destruction of rock by mechanical means rather than blasting. Various other basically new methods are presently under study, such as the use of laser beams, water jets, etc. For practical purposes, there are presently only two methods commercially available: 1) blasting or 2) tunneling by mole. A contractor would choose at present either one method or the other. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages (Fig. 1). The thought has occurred that the next practical development in rock- tunneling technology might be a combination of the best features of the mole technique and those of the blasting technique. A preliminary evaluation of this approach indicated that there is definitely a good potential for fruitful developments along these lines. My purpose is to place on record some of the thinking and some of the ideas which were developed along these lines and to point out certain areas where development efforts are required. In trying to find an improved tunneling technique, we looked in particular for the following qualities: 1) safety, 2) continuity, 3) uniformity, 4) automation, and 5) flexibility. TUNNELING BY BLASTING Conventional tunneling by means of blasting proceeds generally in recurring sequences of events: 1) drilling, 2) loading, 3) firing, 4) mucking-out, and supplementary operations (such as scaling and lining). These four operations (drilling, loading, firing, mucking) proceed one after another.

Through close cooperation with geophysical and geological test work by Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. in Beaufort County, the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory assisted in the evaluation of North Carolina's most valuable mineral resource, the Pungo River phosphate deposit. After a core evaluation study, the flotation process for the concentration of North Carolina phosphate was demonstrated in a 500-lb per hr pilot plant in Asheville. Tonnage samples of phosphate concentrate were produced for customer evaluation in the United States, Europe, and the Far East. Plans for a larger pilot plant to be erected at the plant site at Lee Creek were prepared for TGS. The larger pilot plant was operated by TGS in conjunction with a test dredging operation which led to the adoption of a dragline dry mining method to move 90,000 tpd of material for the production of 10,000 tpd of phosphate concentrate in the all-flotation phosphate concentrator. Calcining, dry grinding, and byproduct studies complimented the construction of one of the world's largest and most modern fertilizer raw-feed complexes on the eastern North Carolina seaboard.

Two dilute nickel alloys in each of the systems Ni-Al, Ni-Ti, Ni-Cr, and Ni-Si u:ere internally oxidized at 700° to 900°C for time periods up to 100hr to establish the oxide particle size, depth of oxide penetration, and the change in oxide particle size with depth. Fine (-270) mesh alloy powders were then intevruzlly oxidized, hydrogen sintered, compacted, and extrmded, yielding bar stock for tensile tests at room temperature and creep-mpture tests at 815° to 1093°C. Recrystallization studies were made up to 1400OC. ReCENT studies have clearly indicated that oxide dispersion strengthened alloys exhibit outstanding elevated temperature properties, espe- cially in long-time tests. Certain structural parameters must be observed to achieve optimum properties, namely, micron or submicron interpar-ticle spacing, submicron oxide particle size, and a high level of stored energy.'-5 A number of processes have been utilized to obtain the desired structures, but certain of them appear to offer greater promise. Thus far the most promising method is the internal oxidation of dilute alloys consisting of a relatively noble solvent metal and a readily oxidizable solute element.3'6)7 Several important principles governing internal oxidation have been established in earlier studies;' however, these principles are as yet not adequate to permit alloy development studies. Much of the earlier work was performed on relatively coarse wires or in idealized systems. As a result, there are still a number of unanswered questions which require considerable additional work: a) How does oxide particle size change with depth of penetration of the oxide? How does this vary with the specific type of solute element? b) What is the effect of solute content on the average oxide particle size?
