A Reichert cone concentrator was installed in an aggregate plant circuit to recover the extremely fine "flour gold" known to exist in the deposit. The gold content of the bank- run gravels averages about 0.1 g/t-about $1.29/t, based upon $12.86/g ($400 per oz) gold. The fineness of the gold averages between 950 and 960. The Reichert cone, in conjunction with a conventional shaking table, recovers in excess of 85% of the gold. A screen analysis of the gold particles shows 44.1 % is - 74pm (-200 mesh) in size. The plant operates with a two-man crew.

In the maintenance of rubber-tired mining equipment, tires may well represent the single greatest problem. Using a 50-ton truck as an example, engine upkeep averages about 8% of the machine's total yearly operating cost, while tires average a whopping 20%. In fact, depending upon such factors as job layout, conditions, and whether it is maintenance or production people who run the job, tire costs can climb to as high as 50% of the truck's total operating expense. Similar costs apply to other earthmoving equipment such as tractor-scrapers and front end loaders. While operators must resign themselves to "normal" tire life and wear, there are many corrective steps that can be taken to fight the "abnormal."

The methodology employed to develop a digital simulation of the Brenda Mines Ltd., Peachland, B. C., secondary crushing plant is described. Methodology includes data acquisition, data adjustment, model building, and the construction of a simulator structure. The simulator was utilized to study the effects of secondary and tertiary crusher close side settings, secondary screen opening, plant feed rate, and percent + 1 in. in the feed on the following responses: percent - 1/2 in. in the final product, plant reduction ratio, circulating load ratio, and screen efficiency. Results are presented in graphical form.

Mineral self-sufficiency is a flexible concept-one which changes with both economic and political vicissitudes.

An increasing number of water pollution control systems are certain to be installed by many industries in the future because of new federal, state and local government regulations, and because of the rising general concern about the deterioration of our water resources. Extensive engineering, some of it based on methods not yet developed, will be required if these new systems are to provide optimum pollution control. Among the primary design factors to be considered are capital cost, operating cost, and present and future regulatory requirements. Establishing A Survey and Test Program To produce a final plant effluent meeting regulatory agency requirements, engineers must have background data that are accurate and representative of present and future plant operation. Operating and plant engineering departments often have available much information, including plant water quantitative and qualitative requirements, both present and future, that can be helpful in the preparation of designs of pollution control systems.

The paper read by Mr. George J. Snelus, in 1894, before the Iron and Steel Institute of Great Britain* so fully and ably described the Walrand-Leghisel process that there remains very little to add beyond recording some changes in practice, made since that date, and observed by the writer last summer, at several continental works, and the further fact that the process has now been for some time in successful operation in this country. Briefiy stated, the Walrand-LegBnisel process is an addition to the Bessemer operation, with the object of obtaining quiet and more fluid steel, and consequently sound castings and ingots. This is achieved by adding ferro-silicon at approximately the time of flame-drop in the ordinary Bessemer operation, and making an after-blow. IT is not necessary to enter into a long discussion of ordinary bells, because every master carpenter or blacksmith knows how to make those levers with a crossbar that are called storks. This is nothing other than a board that has a thick and heavy head and looks more like a dolphin than a bird. This has a long tail in the form of a handle so that it makes a more powerful lever. As can be seen in every bell tower and other place where there are bells, it has, crosswise above the point where the cannon of the bell is fitted and fastened in, an iron bar which is arched and which has its two ends turned horizontally. ROBERT E. HOCHSCHEID (Krebs Engineers, Cyclone Div.)--The subject article appears in the February, 1978, edition of Mining Engineering, and on page 190 carries the statement, "As most operators know, in a Water-Only cyclone, ability to adjust the vortex finder is quite important due to the sensitivity of this type of operations to variance in feed conditions and having to take them apart to make this adjustment is always a nuisance." Our experience as a manufacturer and supplier of Water Only cyclones does not agree with the above statement, and we offer the following brief discussion.

The use of computer models to design the ultimate open pit limits during feasibility studies as well as during long-range mine planning is becoming an enforced practice in all types of mining, e.g., ferrous, non-ferrous, and coal. As a result, the state of the art in computerized ultimate pit limit design methodologies and associated computing and optimizing techniques has advanced considerably in recent years. Unfortunately, very little has been published to date regarding the preferred ultimate pit limit design philosophy, i.e., optimizing us satisfying, or regarding the modeling approaches being used for different types of orebodies. This paper reviews the current state of the art in various modeling approaches and optimizing techniques that are in use for different types of deposits, through available literatures and personal communications.

The prize is open to anyone engaged in research, either privately, commercially, or in connection with any univer-sity or college staff, or any state or national bureau or sur-vey. The work must have been done, or at least completed, curing the year named. Three copies of the paper or books must be in the hands of the chairman of the committee on or before 6 p. m., May 1, 1928. The ratio of the endurance limit (10' cycles) to tensile strength of age-hardened aluminum alloys is approximately 0.3, whereas the ratio for annealed alloys is about 0.5. The lower value for the age-hardened alloys has been associated with the instability of coherent precipitate during cyclic loading, but it has not been definitely established whether this instability is due to overaging or reversion during cyclic loading. The results of the present investigatzon support the reversion viewpoint. In this work specimem of 2024-T4 aluminum alloy were aged for 16 hr at 150°C after cycling for 10 pct of the life at 25.000 psi. These specimens were then tested to failure and exhibzted a marked increase in fatigue life. It is proposed that during the early stages of fatigue in this alloy dislocations cut through the coherent precipitate and bring about the reversion of the precipitate. Subsequent aging at 150ºC induces reprecipitation in the precipitate-free zones so that the weakened regions are strengthened and the fatigue life is extended. It Is recognized that the fatigue strengths of precipitation hardened aluminum alloys are unusually low relative to their tensile strength.'-= This feature is illustrated in Fig. 1 where it can be seen that age-hardened alloys have lower fatigue ratios (the ratio of the fatigue strength to the tensile strength) than those in the annealed or cold worked state. Further, as shown in Fig. 2, the more an alloy is dependent upon precipitation hardening for its total strength, the lower is the ratio of the fatigue strength to the tensile strength. This state of affairs has been associated with an instability of the metastable metallurgical structure of precipitation hardened aluminum alloys during cyclic loading. Evidence2 in support of this view is that the fatigue ratio increases in these alloys as the test temperature is lowered, thereby indicating that thermo-mechanical instability, rather than some other factor such as a non-uniform distribution of precipitate, is the factor responsible for the low fatigue ratio at room temperature. Two mutually exclusive proposals have been ad- vanced to account for this instability. Hanstock has proposed that overaging takes place during cyclic loading, and in support of this view, Broom et a1.2 have indicated that an overaging process might be promoted by the large numbers of vacancies which are created during cyclic loading. The creation of vacancies by radiation4 has been shown to lead to rapid overaging. Hanstockl obtained visual evidence of overaging in an aluminum alloy after cyclic loading, but in this instance it has been pointed ou? that because of the high frequency used (60,000 cpm) the observed effect may have been due to normal high temperature precipitation around energy dissipating cracks. Efforts to discern visual evidence of overaging in this alloy at lower test frequencies were not successful.3 The alternative postulate3 is that reversion takes place during cyclic loading and leads to localized soft spots at which fatigue cracks are readily initiated. Evidence for this process has recently been provided by Polmear and Bainbridge5 who demonstrated metallographically that regions depleted of precipitate were created during cyclic loading of an aluminum alloy. Inasmuch as precipitate particles bordering the depleted region had not grown in size, it was concluded that the solute atoms which had constituted the missing particles had gone back into solution. No mechanism for the reversion process was presented. The present study was undertaken to investigate further the conditions leading to instability during cyclic loading, and to determine whether reversion or overaging had taken place as a result of cyclic loading. BACKGROUND AND TEST PROCEDURE In order to differentiate between the processes of reversion and overaging, rest periods at an elevated temperature, which ordinarily would insure additional precipitation, were used in this investigation. It was expected that after a period of cyclic loading an elevated temperature rest period would result in a decrease in the remaining life of the specimen if overaging were occurring during cyclic loading, whereas in the case of reversion, reprecipitation would occur and the fatigue life would be extended. Such an expectation is based on the assumption that the crack-nucleation phase is a significant portion of the total fatigue life, and that such a treatment is of influence in the crack-nucleation stage and is relatively unimportant thereafter.

The following general survey of the character and present condition of the silver-mines of Mexico, though not offered as a detailed treatise, has been prepared with care, is believed to be generally up-to-date, and is offered as a summary which may be found useful by mining engineers. For several centuries Mexico has ranked first anlong the silver-producing countries. It is now second as a copper-producer, and seventh as a gold-producer, with a fast-increasing output every year. The total amount of capital invested in its mining- and smelting-works exceeds $250,000,000, while the value of the yearly metallic production is $160,000,000. There are more than 20,000 recorded mining properties. The silver-mines of Mexico represent deposits of three principal classes: (1) veins and stock-works in eruptive rocks; (2) fissure-veins crossing the crystalline schists, granite, diorite, etc.; and (3) veins and replacement-deposits in limestone. Flame fusion growth of strontium titanate crystals was undertaken to obtain large transparent crystals on which physical data could be gathered. The fact that strontium titanate is a cubic crystal and probably has a high index of refraction indicated that it might be useful in optics. No large boules* of strontium titanate had been synthesized previously, and none have been found as natural occurrences. The flame fusion process, invented by Verneuil in 1904, was first applied to grow large crystals of ruby and has since been used extensively to grow crystals of corundum and spinel on a commercial scale. Only during the past nine years has this technique been applied to the growth of large single crystals of other high melting compounds such as rutile, mullite and ferrites.

Of all the developments in the post-war history of Western Europe, none has been more remarkable in its aims and in the progress it has achieved than the movement toward European integration. It is not an exaggeration to say that this movement marks a virtual revolution, an about-face, in the long and complicated history of European states over the past three centuries. Although sporadic efforts to achieve European integration can be traced back for at least a 100 years, it remained for the breakdown of the European economies as a result of World War II and the subsequent Russian threat to give new impetus to the concept of broader economic and political integration. In fact, the economic integration of Europe following the end of the war was considered so essential that, in 1949, the administrator of the European Cooperation Administration, Paul Hoffman, spoke of the economic integration of Western Europe as an objective of American policy embodied in the Marshall Plan.
