Is the value of rock sealant on radon control destroyed by changes in barometric pressure? While an article by Dr. Gerald Schroeder in the June 1977 issue of MINING ENGINEERING suggests this, it should be noted this is not necessarily true as the ensuing discussion reveals. Before analyzing the data leading to Dr. Schroeder's conclusions, some comments on their source are needed. The figures were collected during a 1973 US Bureau of Mines test of radon barrier coatings in the Dakota uranium mine near Grants, N.M. Results of that test were reported by Franklin, et al 3,4 in 1975. The mine is essentially dry and ore occurrence is within a lightly cemented, porous medium-to coarse-grained sandstone of high permeability and radon emanation rate.

Pacific Rim countries currently have plans to import about 100 Mt/a (110 million tpy) of steam coal by 1990. Due to its close proximity, Powder River Basin coals offer a long term economic and dependable source of supply to the Pacific Rim. In existing boilers, Powder River Basin coals can be blended with Australian, South African, or Canadian coals. For new units, Powder River Basin coals are very competitive on a total evaluated cost basis. The advantages of using Powder River Basin coal include: assurity of supply, consistent coal quality, stable labor force, and attractive mining economics. In 1930, Taggart, Taylor and Knoll1 found that addition of various electrolytes to suspensions of ground minerals resulted in the stopping or starting of Brownian movement of the suspended particles. On the basis of the many new facts found, they rejected the " classical"† theory of Brownian movement and proposed an "ioniza-tion " theory. This new theory was further supported in later publications by Taggart.3,4 The acceptance of the ionization theory by men in the field of flotation may be judged by the mention given this theory in Gaudin's "Principles of Mineral Dressing,'16 Wark's "Principles of Flotation,"8 as well as in a recent paper by Fitt, Thomas and Taggart.7 The proponents of the ionization theory have gone further than the mere statement of the new theory. A parallelism between the Brownian movement of mineral particles and their behavior in flotation was reported.1,3,4 Likewise, the correlation between flocculation-dispersion of mineral particles and the Brownian movement of these particles has been investigated.' Bankoffl5 has suggested that "slime-coating" can also be directly correlated with the Brownian movement of the slime particles. In each of the instances mentioned it is the ionization theory of Brownian movement that has been used to "explain" the correlations that were found. The essential conflict between the kinetic theory and the ionization theory can be understood best by a brief description of each. The kinetic theory* proposes that Brownian movement is caused by the impacts of liquid molecules against the solid particles. At any instant of time, the molecular impacts on all sides of the solid particle will not balance, and the particle will receive a push in some direction. According to this theory, dl particles suspended in a liquid are in Brownian movement. However, if the particle is very large, the impacts on all sides will very nearly balance and the motion will not be noticeable. Another factor, besides the size of the particle, that affects the magnitude of the Brownian movement is the viscosity of the liquid—the greater the viscosity, the less the displacement of particles by Brownian movement. This theory has been verified experimentally by measurement of the velocity of Brownian movement, and by measurement of the compacting of suspensoid particles under the influence of gravity.2 The originators of the ionization theory found that he addition of various electrolytes to slime pulps caused cessation or commencement of Brownian movement, depending upon the chemical nature of the particle and the electrolyte. IN spite of the very general employment of nitride hardening, there is still considerable doubt as to the real nature of the mechanism involved. Experience has shown that the addition of small amounts of hardening elements to iron or steel results in a wide variety of desirable properties in a nitrided case. Perhaps the foremost of these elements is aluminum and in this investigation an attempt has been made to study the behavior of aluminum during the hardening process. It is believed that the establishment of a complete atomic picture of the metal at various stages of the process will indicate the relationships between the several kinds of atoms and their individual influences on the physical properties in a clear and direct fashion. A consideration of the problem suggests a surprising similarity between the mechanisms of nitride hardening and of age-hardening. It is now generally understood that age-hardening may take place by one of two distinct processes, the first involving the precipitation of a finely dispersed phase and the other being concerned with the modifica-tion of an existing phase. Following much the same line of reasoning, two theories of nitride hardening have been suggested. The first expla-nation, which has been generally discussed, particularly by Fry,1 states in brief that the presence of aluminum causes the precipitation of alumi-num nitride during nitriding and that this finely dispersed phase is the primary cause of hardening. The second explanation, which has not been published but which has been freely discussed by those interested in the problem, postulates the substitution of aluminum atoms for certain of the iron atoms in the several iron-nitrogen phases in the same manner that the substitutional iron-aluminum solid solution is formed. METAL-ORGANIC INNER COMPLEXES AN inner complex is a cyclic chemical structure containing an inorganic cation that is bound simultaneously to several atoms in a single organic molecule; on the one hand by means of ordinary valence bonds (electron exchange), on the other hand through the action of the electric field thus created, which satisfies the so-called secondary valences. The relative positions of the salt-forming and complex-forming groups are such that most frequently a four, five, or six-membered ring results through this double attachment of the cation.1-6 The formation of inner-complex ring systems depends not only upon the nature and suitable position of the salt-forming and complex-forming groups for ring closure, but, to a great extent, also on the nature of the metallic cation entering the reaction. This selective character of chelate-forming organic compounds is one of their most interesting and most valuable properties. As a matter of fact, the largest number of their practical applications is based upon their specificity. 4,1-13 Once a chelate compound is formed, its character is definitely "organic" in nature. In other words, its properties are conditioned to a much larger degree by the carbon chains or rings than by the metallic atom. Many inner complexes are soluble in nonpolar solvents such as benzene, paraffin oil or carbon tetrachloride, while the chelate-forming reagent before closure of the metal-organic ring is water soluble. (Example: copper complex of salicyl-aldoxime.) It is obvious that such particular properties as those indicated above can be utilized whenever specificity and practically complete binding of inorganic ions into an undissociable complex are required. One of the well-known applications of chelate-forming compounds has been the development of specific reagents in analytical chemistry,, creation of the spot-test method,4,14-16 and the application of the same principles to the contact print method for determining minerals.17 CHELATE-FORMING COMPOUNDS AS COLLECTORS In the field of flotation, where selectivity is often a quality of paramount importance for the collector, various workers have lately attempted to apply their knowledge of specific organic analytical reagents to this purpose. A. C. Vivian18 has concentrated cassiterite by using ammonium nitrosophenylhydroxylamine (Cupferron) C6H5NO(=NONH4). Holman19 has tested dimethylglyoxime for the flotation of nickel oxide minerals, while deWitt has shown in a series of systematic experiments that alpha-dioximes were generally selective collectors for nickel ores. (written discussion*).-Captain Lucas has made an important contribution to our, knowledge of Belle Isle, especially as to the outline of the sulphur deposit, and the pronounced irregularity of the salt surface. I agree with his view, that the elevation or mound that constitutes Belle Isle may consist of several salt domes formed at different periods. It may be interesting to note the high gas pressure encountered in pockets in the salt by my No. 1 Belle-Isle well. While drilling a dry hole with cable tools, we sometimes struck. pockets of gas which would float the tools, so that drilling had to be suspended sometimes for several hours at a time, until the head of gas was exhausted, and this with a string of tools, 5-in. (127 mm.) stem 36 ft. (10.9 m.) long, that weighed complete about 3500 lb. (1587 kg.). At about 1800 ft. (548 m.), we struck the largest gas pocket and the string of tools was thrown up and nearly out of the hole. When it dropped back it made several loops

The iron formation of the Iron River, Crystal Falls, and Florence districts probably is not of one geologic age only but of at least two ages. The ores, therefore, are of different characteristics. But in general the geologic conditions that occasioned the development of the orebodies have been essentially the same throughout the district and the types and structures of the orebodies are very similar in different parts of the area. In general, the iron formation of this area has been folded into a series of close pitching synclines and anticlines; minor folds of many orders are included in the major folds. The pitching synclines have been particularly favorable places for the circulation of ground waters, which in such troughs have developed orebodies through the familiar process of leaching out the silica in the iron formation, oxidizing and concentrating ferrous iron compounds in the rocks. The iron formation of this area is interbedded with and has interbedded in it certain slate or slaty layers that, in addition to the foot wall of the iron formation proper, act as impervious layers in the pitching troughs, to direct and control the flow of underground waters. In most places, the entire iron formation in a structural trough is not altered into iron ore; the orebody may be lens-shaped and exhibit no folding in its layers, outline, or shape, but almost without exception such bodies have been developed in folds and because of the influence of folds, and structurally they occupy only one limb of a fold. Many orebodies occupy the entire trough of a minor fold and the structure of the fold can be traced throughout the orebody. Many definitely recognizable horizon markers in or associated with the iron formation occur in this district and serve as valuable guides to the engineer or geologist in exploring an orebody whether by drilling or underground mining development. Among such markers are the talc schist (an altered dolomite) and the Traders slate at the base of old Menominee iron formation proper, and the interbedded Brier slates and overlying Hanbury dates; and certain graphitic slates and gray-wackel in the Iron River and Crystal Falls area.

ALEXANDER BURRELL Alexander Burrell, general manager of the Furnace Creek Oxide Copper Mining Co., and' a member of the Institute for 20 years, died suddenly at the Argo mine on Feb. 13, 1917. Mr. Burrell was one of the best known mining men in Montana. He was horn at Edinburgh, Scotland, Jan. 14, 1851, and came to Chicago with his parents in 1856. His father, who was a coppersmith, died soon after their arrival, and the ,son had few opportunities to gain an education in school, but was a natural student and was possessed of a liberal education acquired through self-teaching and through his constant reading and studying, particularly along scientific lines. It was this technical knowledge both of mining, and business, as well as his experience in the practical side of mining and his ability as an executive that won for him a high place in mining circles in Montana. As a very young man he worked as a miner in Illinois and later became an operator of a coal property. Subsequently he engaged

ENROLLMENT of both undergraduate and graduate mineral engineering students rose approximately 11.8 pct over last year to a total of 12,830. Leading again in the enrollment climb was ceramic engineering which increased by about 21 pct. Approximated increases in enrollment of the other mineral engineering categories, in order, were: metallurgical 17.7 pct; petroleum 13.3 pct; geological and geophysical 3.3 pct: and mining proper, the lowest with 2.9 pct. Total ECPD school enrollment climbed to 242,405 -just below the 1947 peak, but 14.4 pct higher than 1955. Engineering enrollments have shown a general increase since 1951, and freshmen enrollments have climbed steadily since 1950.

Prof. Frank H. Probert, dean of the College of Mining of the University of California, visited the mining areas in the devastated regions as a member of the Bureau of Mines committee, which is studying the problems presented in the rehabilitation of mines there. He says that the absolute destruction of the coal mines in the Pas de Calais section makes it-necessary to use either the Westphalia or the Saar valley coal. The Saar mines, however, produce a poor quality of coking coal: therefore, it will not be possible to operate blast furnaces very efficiently unless provision is made for the introduction of better coal. ABSTRACT A critical summary is given of the analytical procedures available to the engineer for the analysis of slope stability. The emphasis is on the various types of behaviour that have been measured in different rock types. A method of assessing the possibility of failure of simple three dimensional wedges is provided in an attempt to demonstrate how structural features can be included in a meaningful manner. An outline for theoretical design is provided that stresses the importance of carrying out a 'Back Analysis' of large and small instrumented failures so that realistic parameters of the rock mass forming the pit slopes can be obtained.

Downtime cannot be tolerated on electric shovels whose cost may approach or exceed $400,000 each. The same may be said for larger-variety off-highway trucks which require an operational expenditure upwards of $50 per hour. One company, for instance, in order to ensure a more continuous operation, has specified centralized lubrication for all of its new equipment. In wet or dry weather, the mining of asbestos can place undue strains on machinery and other equipment. When the mineral is dry, its dusty, loose fibers work their way into crevices, and when wet, the glutinous asbestos may adhere to axles, gears and other wear components. Such conditions are multiplied during the extreme cold winters of eastern Canada. It is more difficult to lubricate and maintain equipment, and erosiveness becomes more punishing to wear parts. Resultant breakdowns rapidly drain off profits.

During the last few years, a great deal of interest has been aroused in the use of more refined blasting techniques. It has been the effort of many mining companies to reduce powder cost, obtain better rock breakage, reduce drilling costs and provide safer working places. With the advent of new types of powder and such techniques as cushion blasting, line blasting, smoothwall or soundwall blasting, and presplitting or preshearing, these goals are approaching reality. Smoothwall blasting and presplitting have re- ceived much attention at the Climax Molybdenum Co., Climax, Colo., mine because of the large cost factor involved. An experimental program was begun in 1961, and during 1964 to the present has been used in many working areas. Some spectacular results have been achieved by the operating personnel in hard ground, but the most beneficial results have been in areas where the ground has been soft and highly fractured.

(written discussion *).-There are several methods for measuring the internal resistance of a battery, the line resistance in a circuit containing an e.m.f., or the true value of this e.m.f. The writers, however, were the first to em-ploy a simple principle whereby the total resistance of the circuit is ad-justed to a preassigned value for which the scale of the millivoltmeter is graduated, the only e.m.f. employed being that of the source measured. One of the simplest forms of these instruments is described on page 2842, September Bulletin. In papers now in the press we have described some twenty modifications of this simple design but all operating upon the same fundamentally new principle. The instrument devised by Mr. . Porter is of this general type but, unlike the designs we have recom-mended, is open to serious objections.

The selective dissolution of pyrolusite (MnO2) in presence of goethite (FeO•OH) in aqueous ammoniacal ammonium carbamate solution has been investigated: various reducing agents were studied, in particular sodium sulfite (Na2SO3,) and hydrazine hydrate (N2H4•H2O). Sodium sulfite was found to be an unsatisfactory reducing agent for both goethite and pyrolusite, for the leaching rate decreased steadily with time to an impractical level because of the limited solubility of the reactions products. Hydrazine hydrate was an effective reducing agent for pyrolusite even at low temperature, whereas goethite required much higher temperatures for any appreciable dissolution. A 1-hr leach at 35°C dissolved 90% of the pyrolusite but only 0.1% of the goethite. An activation energy of 17.0 Kcal per mole was found for the dissolution of pyrolusite with hydrazine. A reaction mechanism for the leaching of pyrolusite with hydrazine is proposed in which a reduction reaction on the surface of the mineral is the rate-determining step. The application of ammonium carbamate to the beneficiation of ilmenite is briefly described.

AS part of a programme of experimental work on single crystals of rhenium and ruthenium, it was found necessary to have the crystallographic angles for these elements. The angles given in Table I were determined to the nearest minute of arc, by Univac Computer. The angle $ between (HKIL) and (hkil) is given by the formula: The angles given for rhenium should be particularly useful in view of the increasing interest in this element. For completeness, angular values are also given for cadmium zinc and magnesium; these form a more complete set of values than those given by Salkovitz.' The assistance of Professor J. Hobstetter and Mr. J. Crozier in the programming of this data is acknowledged. The work is sponsored by the Office of Naval Research under contract No. NONR 551 (19).

IN speaking, on the subject, "Engineer-Citizens," at the Lehigh Valley Mineral Industries Conference dinner, on April 26, at Easton, Pa., George Otis Smith, Director of the United States Geological Survey and President of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, said in part: "It would be carrying coke to Connellsville to bring to the Lehigh Valley the idea that mineral resources are the foundation of national prosperity. Unfortu-nately, however, this obvious, fact is not everywhere recognized. Too many of our economists, journalists, statesmen and other dopesters of present business con-ditions stress the human factor so strongly that they overlook the material with which men work out their destiny. To them the financial psychology of Wall Street and the political logic of Capitol Hill and the business commonplaces of Main Street all loom far larger than the geology of the Lehigh Valley or the engineering triumphs of Bethlehem, or, the creative thinking at Lehigh and Lafayette. "The present situation in the industrial and .business world is a complex of interacting causes and reacting effects not easily itemized and entered on our trial balance sheet. But, chief among the liabilities of today is the excess of production capacity in most branches of industry. The farmer has no. monopoly in his desire for relief. Whether your professional connections are with steel or cement, coal or oil, copper, or zinc, you; know too well that for, the moment America is over-engined, and you keenly realize the ever-present hazard of industry speeding up regardless of the curves or grades just around the corner.
