The present mine at White Pine has been extracting low grade copper ore by mechanized room-and-pillar methods for approximately eleven years. Increasing depth of mining is decreasing the extraction ratio. It is desirable to mine a higher grade product by extracting values only and increase recovery of the available natural resource. These factors led to the consideration of a caving method such as longwalling. GEOLOGY The White Pine orebody consists of two mineralized shale horizons separated by a relatively barren zone of shale and sandstone. These gently dipping sediments lie at the base of the Nonesuch shale formation and are of late Precambrian age.

THE death of Louis Janin, which took place Mar. 6, 1914, at Santa Barbara, terminated the earthly career of almost the last survivor, and one of the most illustrious, members, of that group of American mining engineers and metallurgists who, in the last quarter, of the nineteenth century, directed the development of the mineral resources of the Pacific slope. IT is the purpose of this paper to describe a method used to determine the corundum contents of samples of hard crystalline gneiss containing both corundum and red garnet. A chemical analysis of the rock for alumina would not fix the amount of corundum because at least three other constituent minerals of the rock, mica, feldspar, and garnet, contain alumina combined with silica. Following are the principal minerals found in the samples, together with their specific gravity and hardness as given by Dana:

The Government has for disposal a large stock of horse-drawn vehicles that were produced during the war to transport and handle all kinds of army supplies. These vehicles consist of escort wagons, also the axles and wheels; ambulances, model 1909; sprinkler, wagons, buckboards, combat wagons, hand carts, water carts, ration carts, and medical carts. These vehicles are adapted to numerous commercial purposes. All were produced under the strictest Government rules, specifications, and supervision and are first class in every way.
