Bain Laboratory for Fundamental Research)—Professor Weertman has suggested the interesting possibility that dislocation tangles are formed by helical formation of dislocations stopped by long-range stresses or by jogs. Such a possibility is similar to that of "mushrooming"374 in the respect that a dislocation must first be stopped and then interact with vacancies. The effect of short-range internal stresses which may exist at the time a dislocation is stopped has not been considered. At the meeting of the Board of Directors held Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1919, there were present nineteen Directors and the Secretary of the Institute. The following officers were elected for the year: A. R. Ledoux, first vice-president; George D. Barron, treasurer; Bradley Stoughton, secretary; and the following committees: Executive Committee, Finance Committee, Library Committee, Committee on Papers and Publications, Committe on Membership. The personnel of these committees will be published in the Year Book. A vote of thanks was passed to each officer and member of the several committees that arranged the New York Meeting of the Institute. The meeting dates for the Board were arranged for the year. A list of publications will be sent upon request Still available are: Bulletin 18, Mining laws, state and federal (1921), 19, Mineral hot springs of Wyoming (1926), 20, Atlantic City-South Pass gold mining district (1926), Circular 5, Operating regulations to govern the production of oil and gas on state and patented lands (1929). The last two Biennial Reports, issued 1928 and 1930, are still available. The bulletins and reports listed are distributed free.

During the past ten years, the trend on the Mesabi Range has been toward the establishment of integrated operations which mine, concentrate, and pelletize the large reserves of magnetic taconite. However, since the supply of open-pit ores of acceptable quality is by no means inexhaustible, it has been proposed that it be supplemented by developing the magnetic taconites that extend down dip past the economic limits for open-pit methods. In Phase I of a long range study, Pfleider and Yardley1 collected information on the general character of the Mesabi iron formation at depth and proposed that an underground lane-and-pillar mining system be considered to extract those high grade layers where they might exist over a considerably areal extent. An approximate cost estimate was included initially, with the thought of later developing a feasibility study as time permitted.

On June 25, Herbert C. Hoover and General Pershing were honored by Oxford University with the degree of Doctor of Civil Law. The ceremony was held in the Sheldonian Theater. It was the culminating feature of the annual L Ecnaenia, or commemoration exercises. Both General Pershing and Mr. Hoover were greeted-heartily when the group filed into the theater, the great audience rising as the distinguished visitors entered and proceeded to their .places on the rostrum. Others upon whom. the degree was conferred were Baron Makino, head of the Japanese Peace Conference delegation; Marshal Joffre of France, Vice Admiral Sir David Beatty, Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, Major Gen. Sir Henry Hughes Wilson, Chief of the British Imperial Staff, and' Vice 'Admiral' Sir Rosslyn Wemyss, First Sea Lord. Former Premier Orlando, of Italy, and Premier Ignace Paderewski, of Poland, received the degree by proxy.
