The selection of a particular machine for production drilling is the most critical drill evaluation the pit engineer is called upon to make. It is a true engineering design problem requiring value judgments. Generally, the procedure follows these steps: (1) Determine and specify the conditions under which the machine will be used, including such service factors as labor, site, weather, etc. (2) State the objectives for the rock-breakage phases of the production cycle of operations--considering excavation and haulage restrictions, crushing capacity, production quota, and pit geometry-in terms of tonnage, fragmentation, throw, etc. (3) On the basis of blasting requirements, design the drill-hole pattern (hole size and depth, in- clination, burden, spacing, etc.) (4) Determine the drillability factors and select the drilling methods which appear feasible for the kind of rock anticipated. (5) Specify the operating variables for each system under study, considering drill, rod, bit and circulation fluid factors. (6) Estimate and compare performance parameters, including costs. Major cost items are bits, drill depreciation, labor, maintenance, power and fluids. (7) Select the drilling system that best satisfies all requirements with the lowest over-all cost.

In a paper read at the meeting in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1875,* I showed that as a result of changing from open-topped to close-topped furnaces at the Glendon Iron Works, there had been a decided falling off in regularity of working, which we attributed to the very different distribution of the materials in the new method of filling. Subsequent experience has, on the whole, confirmed the opinions then expressed, and in 1881 we decided to try the modification of the Langen charger, shown on the accompanying drawings, thinking by its use to approximate to the distribution obtained by dumping the barrows at six equidistant points in the circumference of the open-topped furnaces. The top of the furnace is closed by a ring-shaped " bell," as we still call it, the outside of which is cylindrical and rests by the turned lower edge on the bored seat of a " loose ring," supported by the lower part of the hopper. The inside of the bell is an inverted frustrum of a cone, the central opening in which is closed by a cylindrical plug, which is prolonged into a pipe to carry off the gas.? This center-plug is connected by rods and chains to sectors on the ends of a forked lever, to the other end of which is attached, by a wire rope, the piston-rod of the blast-cylinder used in opening the top. The rods connected to the center-plug pass loosely through the apexes of triangular frames, to the other angles of which the bell is attached; it thus being suspended by four points when the top is open. There is not a coal preparation engineer alive who would equip his newest and most modern preparation plant with all new and untried pieces of equipment. He may install a few such pieces in which he has great confidence, but he will also spend much time assuring himself that everything else in the plant has been subjected to the test of time. He may arrange these units in a unique manner, but in general, they must have proven themselves elsewhere before he will approve them for his plant. A modern coal preparation plant contains only a few items of processing equipment, the remaining items being devices for materials handling. Consequently, pure automation is almost impossible. Although the main aim of automation is conservation of manpower, it generally results in uniformity of product, lower maintenance costs, and the many intangibles that make a better plant.

Introduction Methane is contained under pressure within the fractures and adsorbed on the surface of the coal seams and adjacent strata. It is released into the mine atmosphere during mining of the seam creating explosive gas-air mixtures. Large volumes of air, sometimes as high as 20 tons of air for each ton of coal mined, are circulated constantly to dilute and carry away methane from coal mines. Removal of methane from solid coal, wherever high methane emissions occur, has been discussed by Spindler and Poundstone (1960) and Thakur and Davis (1977). Methane control in longwall gobs is much more complicated. As longwall mining progresses, the overburden continually subsides, and the immediate roof caves behind the roof supports. Even the underlying strata heave and open up communication channels feeding gas to the longwall gobs. The pressure of gas in the underlying and overlying strata is usually higher than the ambient air pressure in the mine. Thus the mine workings become natural pressure sinks, into which gas flows from the entire disturbed zone. Winter (1975) defines this zone as the "gas emission space". Depending on the number of gas-bearing zones in the gas emission space and their gas contents, the total methane emission from longwall gobs could vary from a few to more than one hundred cubic meters of gas per ton of mined coal. Hence the ventilation of longwall faces demands a large quantity of air. This ventilation need is further enhanced by high air losses specially on caving faces (with no stowing of the gobs). The old system of longwall ventilation, the 'U' pattern, where all the air was brought down one gate road and exited through the other gate road, loses large quantities of air through gobs giving a high methane concentration at the return end of the face. The 'Y' ventilation pattern where intake air is brought down both head and tail gate roads relieves the situation to some extent but, on most longwalls, some kind of methane control is still needed. With the onset of longwall mining in Europe several decades ago, the initial work on methane control on longwall has naturally been done there. The basic principle of methane control has always been, and still remains, some means of "bypassing methane from the gas emission space without letting it mix with the mine air". In most cases the bypassing mechanism is either a strategically located borehole or a roadway. A successful methane control program depends on the following basic premises: a. Determination of the geometry of the gas emission space and location of gas bearing horizons therein. b. Estimation of the rate of methane influx into the longwall gob. c. A scheme to bypass the gas in the most economic and efficient manner and thus prevent it from entering the mine atmosphere. In successful methane drainage programs a high proportion, usually between 50 and 70 percent, of the total gas emissions in a working district is removed before it can enter the mine airways. Advantages of methane drainage can be summarized as: 1. Generally reduced methane levels in the mine leading to increased safety and productivity. 2. Reduced air requirements and corresponding savings in ventilation horsepower. 3. Faster rate of advance for development headings and economy in the size of headings. 4. Possible use of mine gas as an additional source of fuel. The purpose of this paper is to briefly review the geometry of gas emission space and methane influx therein and discuss more successful European and U.S. longwall gob gas control techniques.

An investigation has been made of the ß(fcc) — a(hexagonal) transformation which occurs in lanthanum using both electrical resistivity and transmission electron microscopy techniques. It has been shown that the ß phase can be retained below the transformation temperature by rapid quenching but that the sample immediately begins to transform to the a phase. The transformation is observed to nucleate in the vicinity of inclusions. Based on the above observations, a detailed model of the transformation has been advanced which involves the nucleation of an extrinsic stacking fault bounded by a pair of Shockley partial dislocations in the vicinity of some heterogeneity, i.e., an inclusion. The stress field of the resultant dislocation pair acts to nucleate extrinsic faults in adjacent planes and leads quite naturally to the B-a conversion with a minimum of strain energy induced in the crystal. LANTHANUM possesses an fcc structure ß) (8) upon cooling transforms to a hexagonal modification (a) in much the same way as cobalt. The one exception, however, is that the stacking sequence of the closest packed planes in a La is ABAC ABAC, and so forth,1 whereas in cobalt it is ABAB, and so forth, i.e., hep. Mainly on the basis of transmission electron microscopy techniques, there seems to be little doubt that the 0 — a transformation in cobalt involves a dislocation mechanism2 although its exact nature still remains obscure. Although the ß - a transformation in lanthanum is somewhat more complex than that occurring in cobalt, it was thought that its very uniqueness would be helpful in understanding fcc — hexagonal transformations in general. Such a general understanding of these transformations is important since they represent what are perhaps the simplest of the martensitic class of transformations. The experimental techniques used were those of electrical resistivity and transmission electron microscopy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The lanthanum used in this investigation was prepared by the calcium reduction of lanthanum fluoride in a tantalum crucible under an argon atmosphere as described by Spedding et al. The residual calcium was removed by vacuum remelting in a tantalum container. Portions of the metal were then analyzed by emission spectroscopy as well as vacuum fusion. The amounts of the various impurities that were found are listed in Table I. A portion of the lanthanum ingot was swaged at room temperature into 0.030-in.-diam rod for the resistivity samples while the remainder was rolled into 0.010-in.-thick sheet for the transmission electron microscopy phase of this investigation. In order to eliminate the plastic deformation induced in the samples during fabrication, they were sealed in evacuated tantalum lined quartz capsules and annealed for 1 hr at 700° C. Specimen resistances were measured using the conventional "four-wire" technique described by MacDonald, 4 employing a type K-3 Universal Potentiometer and a standard 0.001-ohm resistor, both manufactured by Leeds and Northrup Co. By taking into account all of the possible errors in the apparatus, it was felt that the absolute resistivities of the approximately 0.87-in.-long specimens measured are reliable to 3 pct. Resistances from room temperature to 700°C were measured using a vacuum furnace. In order to avoid sample contamination by the thermocouple, chromel-alumel leads were spot-welded into a tantalum shield which in turn was welded to the lanthanum specimen. Resistances below room temperature were obtained by transferring the sample to a helium gas-filled quench tube and slowly dripping liquid nitrogen into a surrounding dewar flask. A steady reduction of temperature to about —190°C was completed in about 23 hr, and the resistances were measured at various temperature intervals. As will be shown shortly, rapid quenching from above about 350°C was sufficient to suppress the B -a transformation initially but subsequent annealing at lower temperatures leads to a partial ß --a conversion. HARD as it is at any time to provide more than three million tons of coal each year for power plants, the task really gets rugged in the wintertime when the fuel freezes solid in the cars. At the Marysville plant of the Detroit Edison Co. the problem of unloading cars of frozen coal was severe because there was an unloader over only one of the two tracks in the coal unloading house. Moving downward by their own weight, with no driving force to aid them, the spuds of this old unloader were unable to break through the crust on a frozen coal car. 20,000 Lb Force To meet this problem, a new mechanical car unloader was installed over No. 2 track and placed in service in December 1947. It is a Kenney type unloader built by Heyl & Patterson, Inc. of Pittsburgh, Pa., a modification of equipment originally designed to unload iron ore cars. The major advantage of this unloader is the force with which it can drive the sharp spade on the end of its ram down through the pockets of a frozen coal car. The unloader consists of the following major units: 1. A traveling bridge structure. 2. A traveling trolley. 3. A retractable and oscillating ram. 4. The operators cab and controls. The bridge is provided with safety hooks to prevent its being lifted from the rails by the upwards push of the ram. The bridge will travel 190 fpm and has sufficient traction on its four wheels to move three loaded 70 ton cars. The trolley runs on tracks supported by the bridge girders and also has upper tracks to control the push from the ram. Two of the single-flange trolley wheels are driven by a one and a quarter hp dc motors equipped with magnetic brakes. The ram is raised and lowered by a 20 hp dc motor equipped with a magnetic brake. A full stroke of a little over 14 ft is given the ram through its rack and pinion drive and the spade can be pushed down into a loaded car with a force of about 20,000 lb. A 15 hp dc motor with a magnetic brake is applied to this drive and is able to swing the ram 45º either side of the vertical. The usual procedure in emptying a coal car is first to drive the sharp spade down through the coal until the pocket is opened and the coal starts to run out the hopper. When all the hoppers are open, the sweeping action of the ram and spade is used to move the remainder of the coal in the car over to the open hoppers. The travel of the trolley permits cleaning the sides of a coal car with the edges of the spade, using the sweeping motion of the ram. It is still necessary to clean out the corners of the car by hand. Final Clean-Out This unloader was a new development and there were improvements to be made before it was completely satisfactory, such as reduction in speed and conversion to ac drive motors. However, it helped at Marysville and unloaded many frozen cars that would have taken a lot of heating to thaw out enough for the old unloader to handle. The mechanical coal unloader described above was a considerable improvement but still left a job to be done by hand-the final cleaning out of the coal cars. The ram had the ability to open a hole through the hopper cars, but did not meet required unloading speed. To eliminate hand cleaning a car shakeout, manufactured by Hewitt Robins, Inc. was added to the installation. This equipment is used to clean the coal car out after the unloader has provided an

Protective coatings based on the formation of a surface coating of nickel aluminide (NiAl) were applied to the nickel-base superalloys IN 100, SEL 15, and U-700. Coated specimens were exposed to an oxidizing environment at temperatures between 1600 and 2200 F for times up to 1000 hr. The oxidation resistance and stability of the coating were evaluated by weight gain measurements, metallographic examination, and X-ray diffraction study of surface oxides and coating. The composition of the coating and diffusion zone was determined by electron microprobe traverse of samples before and after high-temperature exposure. Intermediate phases formed in the coating and diffusion zone were identified by X-ray diffraction in situ and after electrolytic extraction. The outer coating was found to consist of the inter-metallic compound, NiAl, while the diffusion zone contained MC, M23C6 or M6C carbides, and a phase in a matrix of NiAl + Nidl. Oxidation resulted in formation of an A1203 n'ch scale containing some Tz02. Depletion of aluminum during oxidation resulted in degradation of the outer coating to Ni3Al and the nickel alloy matrix. Diffusion of aluminum into the base metal was found to be slight and did not influence coating life significantly. The o formed in the diffusion zone during coating decomposed during elevated-temperature exposure to form stable carbide phases characteristic of the base metal. Diffusion zone phase changes were found to have no effect on the life of the aluminide coating in the oxidizing envzron?nent. THE oxidation resistance of many high-strength nickel-base superalloys is inadequate for extended exposure at temperatures above about 1600°F. In addition, some applications for these materials require that they be exposed to environments containing sulfur compounds and sodium salts which can cause surface attalk known as sulfidation or hot corrosion. In order to provide the necessary corrosion resistance to the high-strength alloys, protective coatings based on an aluminizing process have been developed. These processes, usually based on a pack cementation technique, result in the formation of a NiAl-rich outer coating layer either during the coating process or by a subsequent diffusion treatment. The performance of the aluminide coatings is affected by interactions between the coating layer and the base metal both during the coating process and during subsequent exposure at elevated temperatures. Knowledge of these interactions is required to guide the development of coatings capable of longer life and improved reliability. Goward et al.' recently reported the metallurgical factors which influence coating per- formance on MAR-M200. The present work is concerned with correlating the interactions and performance of coating compositions on several representative materials. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials. Three cast nickel-base superalloys which are used for turbine buckets in air-breathing engines were studied: IN 100, U-700, and SEL 15. Their chemical compositions are given in Table I. The alloys were vacuum-induction-melted and cast to slabs approximately 0.3 in. thick from which rectangular specimens 0.25 by 0.5 by 1 in. were machined. Coating Procedures. The machined specimens were coated by CODEP processes which were developed at the author's laboratory. These are based on pack cementation in various media to deposit either aluminum or aluminum in combination with titanium. The coating process which deposits only aluminum is designated CODEP-C, while the CODEP-D process deposits titanium in combination with aluminum. The CODEP-D process was applied only to IN 100. Both CODEP processes are applied at 1950" or 2000°F for 4 hr without need for a subsequent diffusion treatment. An outer coating about 1 mil in thickness is produced by these processes. Test Procedures. Coated specimens were exposed to static oxidation for periods ranging from 24 to 1000 hr at temperatures of 1600" to 2200°F. Terminal weight gain measurements and visual examination were used to evaluate oxidation resistance. including oxide spalling and coating failure. Both as-coated and exposed specimens of each alloy were studied by metallographic examination, electron microprobe analysis (EMA), and X-ray diffraction analysis either of the exposed surfaces or of phases extracted from the coating and diffusion zone. RESULTS As-Coated Condition. The microstructures of as-coated conditions were generally similar, irrespective of base materials or the particular coating process. They are typified by IN 100 coated by CODEP-D as shown in Fig. 1. The predominately single-phase outer layer, area A, Fig. 1, was identified by X-ray diffraction as the intermetallic compound NiA1. The NiAl zone extended inward to the original base metal interface. The diffusion zone, area B, Fig. 1, included carbide phases, a lamellar phase oriented perpendicular to the base metal surface, and a matrix phase consisting of a mixture of NiAl and Ni3Al. The phases in the diffusion zone were electrolytically extracted using a 10 pct HCl in methanol solution at approximately 1.3 amp per sq cm. The extracted phases were found to be M6C, MC, or M=C6 carbides and o as shown in Table I1 for each of the alloys. The d spacings from a typical diffraction pattern are

MoRe than two years ago, in making efficiency tests on our hot-blast stoves, I was surprised to discover a marked difference in temperature as indicated by a pyrometer inserted near a stove on blast, and the regular recording instrument situated near the bustle pipe. A special hole was then provided at the junction of the hot-blast main and the bustle pipe, and portable pyrometers with bare fire ends were used, both at this point and in the stove necks. I had occasion to make a number of such tests on various stoves on the same, furnace, the difference in temperature as shown by the two pyrometers varying chiefly with the temperature of the blast, and the distance of the stove from the furnace. However, this difference was always great, often averaging above 100" F., for the entire period of a stove on blast. Later, experiments were made with similar results on another group of stoves. The pyrometers used were properly standardized and checked against each other before and after each test. However, there was still a slight doubt as to the accuracy of the results obtained, as subsequently explained. But I have obtained corroboration of the magnitude of heat losses from blast-furnace hot-blast mains from two independent sources. I have learned from H. A. Brassert, Superintendent of Blast Furnaces, South Works, Illinois Steel Co., that he has recently done some experimental work similar to my own, and found temperature drops of the same order of magnitude. Also, C.,R. Lyle, of the Armstrong Cork Co., has made some interesting theoretical calculations, based on the thermal conductivity of fire brick, for the particular conditions of several of our tests; and his theoretical interpolations, all facts being considered, check our actual observations fairly well. I understand that Mr. Lyle expects to publish the results of his investigations. The heats oj- formation at 0°C of the compounds AuSn,, AuSn2, AuSn, and the £ phase were measured in a metal -solution calorimeter with liquid tin or a liquid Sn-Bi alloy as solvent. The melting point, heat of fusion, and heat capacities near the melting point of- the compound AuSn in the solid and liquid state were measured in a constant temperature gradient calorimeter. The free energy and entropy of formation of the compound AuSn at its melting point and at 298 °K were calculated from the experimental results and published data. The heats of formation are discussed in relation to the nature of the compounds. The heat capacity below the melting point, heat of fusion, and entropy of fusion of AuSn are interpreted in terms of processes oc-curring before melting. The atomic arrangement in liquid Au-Sn alloys and the bonding in the intermediate phases of. the Au-Sn system are discussed in the light of the measured thermodynamic properties. THE available thermodynamic information on the intermediate phases in the Au-Sn system consists of the heats of formation of the compounds AuSn4, AuSn2, and AuSnly2 and of one composition of the < phase2 besides values of the heat content of the compound AuSn from 0" to 635".&apos; However, the heats of formation refer to different temperatures ringing from 90" to 450°C. Also, the reported error limits of some of the values are large and several inconsistencies are apparent. In the investigation reported here the heats of formation of the compounds AuS-, AuSnz, and AuSn and of three compositions of the < phase were determined for a single reference temperature of 0°C by liquid metal-solution calorimetry. The compound AuSn, which is the only congruently melting intermediate phase in this system, was further investigated in a constant temperature gradient calorimeter by measuring its heat of fusion, melting point, and heat capacity in the solid and liquid states near the melting point. From these data and published free energies of the liquid of composition Au~n,&apos; the free energies of formation of the compound AuSn at the melting point and at 298°K were calculated. The results shed light on the solid-liquid transition of AuSn and on the atomic bonding and state of association of gold and tin in the solid and liquid phases. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES 1.1) Preparation of Samples. Stoichiometric amounts of gold and tin, each 99.99+ pct pure, were melted in evacuated Vycor capsules (12 mm ID). The melts were maintained approximately 150°C above the liquidus for about 12 hr and shaken repeatedly. Samples of the compound AuSn were cooled slowly to room temperature. Melts of the other phases, all of which solidify by peritectic reactions, were transferred to the narrow end (5 mm ID) of the capsule, which was then quenched into iced brine. The solidified samples were annealed in the unopened capsules for 10 days at 30" to 50° C below the respective solidus temperatures. The absence of microsegregation and second phases was confirmed by metallographic examination. At least two batches of each composition were prepared. 1.2) Solution Calorimetry. The heats of formation were determined by liquid metal-solution calorimetry. In this technique, the difference between the heat effects on dissolution in a liquid metal, or alloy bath, of the compound and a mechanical mixture of its annealed components, adjusted for changes in composition of the bath, is the heat of formation of the compound at the temperature from which the samples are added. Details of the equipment and technique have been described."&apos; A tin bath at 300" or 350°C was used with the compounds AuSn,, AuSnz, and AuSn. The high gold content of the £ phase would have caused it to dissolve with an appreciable exothermic heat effect. In order to achieve thermal compensation, the samples were added from 0°C to a bath at 350°C consisting of 66.2 wt pct Bi (99.999+ pct pure), balance Sn (99.99+ pct pure). This solvent gives thermal compensation because gold dissolves exothermically in tin and endothermically in bismuth. The calorimeter was calibrated by adding from 0°C approximately 0.015 g-atom of the solvent.

INTRODUCTION ASARCO Incorporated purchased the East Tennessee Zinc Mines of the American Zinc Company and commenced operating on November 29, 1971. Presently, three mines are operating producing 6620 t/d (7300 stpd). The ore mined is sphalerite which occurs In lower Ordovician carbonates of the upper Knox Group and occurs in open space and fracture filling. Orebodies range from 3 to 46 m (10 to 150 ft) thick with dips from flat to 20º. The mining method is random room and pillar modified by shrinkage and bench stoping. Like other mining departments, the mining group at the Tennessee Mines Division is constantly looking for methods to improve productivity and safety and to reduce mining costs. This involves testing new equipment, trying new ore extraction ideas and making mining plant alterations to meet changes in operating conditions. The areas of change that will be described in this paper are longhole raising, jumbos and LHD loading, shaft sinking, conveyor transport of ore and sublevel haulage developments. LONGHOLED RAISES Raise driving has always been a hazardous occupation for miners and today it is becoming more difficult to get competent people for this kind of work. This problem has led us to seek an easier, safer way in which to excavate raises. The first longhole raises were excavated in the early 1970&apos;s using a Gardner-Denver air trac equipped with a PR-123 rock drill. EARLY in 1936, when the American Petroleum Institute issued -J "American Petroleum Industry," which was a survey of the current position of the petroleum industry, and its future outlook, and the figures for petroleum requirements .for 1950 and 1960 were widely publicized by the several oil journals, the impression was given that the petroleum- industry must be nearing maturity and would by 1950 have passed the high&apos; point of its obligations to business progress in the United States.`&apos; Let -us look at the figures which might conduce, this thought. Referring to p. 32 of the report, the total indicated crude-oil requirements in 1940 are 1,099,000,000 bbl-; for 1950, the peak, 1,109,800,000 bbl.; for 1960 a decline to 1,071,020,000 bbl. This downward trend, then established, is probably expected to continue. And this in the face of a crude production in 1935 of 993,942,000 bbl., 38,858,000 bbl.

THIS paper presents the design and operation of a frothmeter capable of measuring the frothing characteristics of pine oils and other frothing reagents. The experimental data show that the frothability of pine oil is governed by: 1-rate of aeration, 2-time of aeration, 3-height of liquid column, 4-chemical composition of pine oil, 5-pH value of solution, 6-temperature of, solution, and 7-concentration of pine oil in solution. The effect of mineral particles on the behavior of froth also was studied, and the results can be found in a separate paper.1 The results also show that the relative frothabilities of pine oils in the frothmeter generally correlate with those in actual flotation, provided that other factors are kept constant. In addition to pine oils, the other well-established flotation frothers were tested, and the results are included. In this paper, compressed air frothing is the frothing process performed by means of purified compressed air, whereas sucked air frothing is the frothing process accomplished by purified air sucked into the glass cylinder by a vacuum system. The term vacuum frothing denotes that froth was formed by degassing of the air-saturated liquid under a closed vacuum system. Apparatus The frothmeter, shown in Fig. 1, is capable of reproducibly measuring the volume and persistence of froth as well as the volume of air bubbles entrapped in the liquid and is capable of being used for compressed air frothing, sucked air frothing, and vacuum frothing. Fig. la shows that for compressed air frothing, the apparatus consists of an airflow regulating system, 1-3; a purifying and drying system, 4-8; a standardized flowmeter to measure the rate of airflow from zero to 500 cc per sec, 9; and a graduated glass cylinder, 13; equipped with an air regulating stopcock, 10; an air chamber, 11; and a fritted glass disk to produce froth, 12. The fritted glass disk, 5 cm in diam and 0.3 cm thick, has an average pore diameter of 85 to 145 microns. The pyrex glass cylinder has a uniform ID of 5.588 cm and an effective height of 63 cm. The inside cross-sectional area of the glass cylinder was calculated to be 24.53 sq cm, or 3.8 sq in. For sucked air frothing, Fig. lb shows that the apparatus for compressed air frothing is used again, with the following modifications: 1-compressed air and its regulating system, 1-3, are eliminated; and 2-a vacuum system, 16, equipped with a vapor trap, 15, and a vacuum manometer, 17, is added. The vacuum system can be .either a water aspirator or a laboratory vacuum pump. Any desired rate of airflow can be drawn into the glass cylinder, 13, by adjusting the opening of the air regulating stopcock, 10. The sucked air stream is cleaned by the purifing and drying system, 4-8, before entering the glass cylinder, 13. When this setup is used for vacuum frothing, the air regulating stopcock is closed. The frothmeter has been used for almost 3 years and has proved to give reproducible results, as illustrated in Table I. With a magnifying glass and suitable illumination, the frothmeter also can be used to study the attachment of air bubbles to coarse mineral particles.2 Experimental Procedures Except where otherwise stated, the data presented were established by means of the compressed air method. The volume and persistence of froth were recorded respectively at the end of 4 and 6 min of aeration at a constant rate of airflow of 29.3 cc per sec which is equivalent to 71.6 cc per sq cm per min, or 462.6 cc per sq in. per min. The aqueous solution for each test, containing 1000 cc of distilled water and 19.2 ± 0.5 mg frothing reagent, was adjusted to a pH of 6.9 ± 0.2. The volume of froth is expressed as cubic centimeter per square centimeter and is equivalent to the height of the froth column (the distance between the bottom and the meniscus of the froth). The volume of froth was obtained by multiplying the height of froth by the cross-sectional area of the glass cylinder, 24.53 sq cm. Before each test, the glass cylinder, 13, was cleaned thoroughly with jets of tap water, ethyl alcohol, tap water, cleaning solution, tap water, and finally distilled water. A centennial meeting should be a time to take stock, to evaluate performance, to plan ahead. It is like a line in a televised commercial that goes, "You&apos;ve come a long way to get where you&apos;ve got to today." And no less should be said of the mining and energy industries. We have come a long way. A hundred years ago when AIME was founded, this country produced 23 million tons of bituminous coal and 5.2 million bbl of oil. The figures in 1970 were about 580 million tons of coal and 4.1 billion bbl of oil. In spite of such accomplishments, serious and compelling voices are heard in the land - doubting sincerity, questioning corporate structures, and challenging ethics. Those doubts are raised in one part of Washington at the same time that other sections of the Capitol are asking us to produce more energy in order to keep up with population growth, emerging nations, and new technologies. Those of us in the fuel or energy business frequently talk about the race for energy. The question is, can we develop enough energy fast enough to outdistance our present and increasing demands? Recently I heard of an incident that - in an odd way - caused me to think of the energy race. The incident involved a sky-diver who jumped from an airplane without a parachute. He was handed a chute in mid-air by a sky-diving companion. He put it on, opened it, and landed safely. In a way, it seems to me that our society is hurtling through space and that it needs some help from the energy industries to land safely. We&apos;re doing our best, but under some rather difficult conditions. Because of illegal strikes and work stoppages the coal parachute is snarled a bit. The cut in percentage depletion and other tax changes have put some holes in the oil parachute. And the gas ´&apos;chute has been in trouble for some time because of unrealistic controls on producer prices. The irony of the situation is that some of the very people who have been taking potshots at the energy parachutes for a long time are the ones who are complaining loudest now because the &apos;chutes are not functioning the way they could. The safety of the entire nation can depend on the energy industries.

A pronounced thermal effect has been observed on heating or cooling a1wninum-rich Al-U and Al-Pu alloys. From microscopic and X-ray diffractionstudies, the effectl has been attributed to trnsfor)nations in the inlemetallic phases UAl, and PuAl , involuing rearrangement or cluslering of vacancies The transformation obsrved in Al-20 wi oct U alloys occurred near the a Al-UAl4 eutectic tem-perature of 646°C making it difjicult to detect from heating curves. When cooling, howeoer, thermal mad X-ray analyses indicnted that the high-temperati~re phase labeled p UAL, precipitated initially during euitectic solidification. As solidification continued and after an induction period o-f 5 lo 20 tnin the nu-cleatiorz and growth of the low- twmperature phase, a UAl4 produced an euolution of energy which raised the observed alloy temperature by 1° to 2°C. in Al-Pu alloys the transformation occurred at 645°C, 5 deg below the eutectic solidification temperccture. The eslimated latent heat of transformation was 25 +5 cnl per g PuAl,. The high-tetnpevcl-ture forms of UAl, and PuAl, were easily 9-etccined by chill casting Al-U and Al-Pu alloys and on reheating the alloys the trcltzsforrnation to the a phase was sluggish even above 600°C. Separated single cryslals o-f UAl4, joy example, showed no evidence Of transformalion after heating for 16 hr at 620°C. The transformation rates increased yapidly enough with increasing temperature, however, that a a spontaneous liberation of energy lens observed on occasion when bealing cast Al-20 wt pet U to neal- the RECENT phase studies on A1-Pu alloys have indicated that earlier reported equilibrium diagrams should be modified to take account of several poly- morphic transformations in the intermetallic compound PuAl,.&apos; During the course of the latter work an unexpected heat evolution was observed while cooling a solid alloy consisting of a mixture of a aluminum and PuA1,. The evolution occurred at 645°C, y below the a A1-Pu A1, eutectic solidification temperature. Subsequent thermal-analysis experiments with A1-U alloys showed that heat was evolved there also at a temperature nearly coincident with the a A1-UA1, eutectic solidification temperature of 646°. A search of the literature revealed that similar thermal effects had been observed before for both A1-U and A1-Pu but had never been fully explained.2,3 The purpose of the present paper is to describe thermal-analysis and X-ray diffraction experiments which have led to the conclusion that the thermal effects are due to transformations which involve the rearrangement of vacancies in the intermetallic compounds UA1, and PuA1,. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The A1-U alloys were prepared by heating super-pure aluminum (99.99 pct +) obtained from the Aluminum Co. of Canada in a graphite crucible surrounded by an induction coil. At 1000°C high-purity uranium metal produced by the Eldorado Mining and Refining Co., Ltd. was dropped into the liquid aluminum and was dissolved completely within 15 min. The impurities in the uranium were A1—4 ppm, Ca-4, C-70, Cr-3, Cu-6, Fe-30, Mg-2, Mn-10, Ni-25, Si-25, and Zn-2. The A1-Pu alloys were prepared by reacting plutonium dioxide with liquid aluminum under cryolite (3 NaF . AlF,) for 10 min at 1100°C in graphite crucibles exposed to the air. The plutonium was 99.8 pct pure, containing trace impurities of Ca, Cu, Fe, Pb, Si, and Zn. The liquid alloys were usually poured into water-cooled molds to provide castings of uniform composition from which samples could be cut for heat treatment and thermal-analysis experiments.

(communication to the Secretary*).-Having enjoyed associations with the authors of this paper while on the Anaconda geological staff, I want to express my appreciation of it as a contribution to economic geology very direct in its application to ore deposits. The conclusions reached seem to me to show that concrete generalizations can not be made over very wide areas as to structural relations of ore deposits, but taking each district separately data of great value has been presented. Looking over thin sections of Montana rocks, among these a collection belonging to Mr. Billingsley and some prepared by myself, one important point in the Butte area has come to my attention which I would like to discuss. Related to the batholithic intrusion, there are a number of various types of both the earlier andesites and the later rhyolites, especially of the rhyolite. Some of this rhyolite is composed- so predominantly of plagioclase and quartz as to be more properly called dacite, and near the volcanic centers the different phases are even more numerous, the quartz in some becoming a very minor constituent and confined to the ground-mass. Some portions of these rhyolitic extrusives assume ,deep reds and grays, and in the hand specimen may very easily be mistaken for andesite of the older period that has been altered by weathering or by baking near the intrusive granite contact; but thin sections of such specimens remove this color effect and present so clearly all the minute details of texture and mineral composition that they are in every respect identical and indistinguishable from the commoner types of the rhyolite. The andesites generally are augitic rocks with smaller plagioclase feldspars than the rhyolites and exhibiting a different arrangement. Therefore the so-called red and Clark gray andesite near Butte is not a portion of the pre-batholithic rocks, but a. phase of the rhyolite, and the authors, in assuming that "roof pendants or large inclusions of andesite are found

VAGUE rumors and stories have been heard, from time to time, about the diamond and gold deposits of southern Venezuela. It is perhaps appropriate, at this time of revived interest in gold mining, to publish a few facts in regard to this country, which has been undergoing exploration since the fifteenth century. Gold and diamonds are found principally in the State of Bolivar which lies in southeastern Venezuela and is bounded by British Guiana on the east and Brazil on the south (see Fig. 1). The famous Mt. Roraima is situated at a point where these three countries meet in a common point (see Fig. 2). Some gold is also found in the southern part of the territory of Amacuro. Good oil prospects exist in the northern part of this same territory. Diamonds are found on the Caroni river from Rio Paragua to the village of Guri. RECOVERY METHODS AS RELATED TO PROPERTIES OF SILVER ORES The earliest metallurgical process for treating silver ores was amalgamation with mercury which was in use in the early 1500&apos;s. Closely following was the development of the Patio process for treating ores at Pachuca, Mexico. Silver often occurs as the native metal and in deposits associated with other metals such as gold, copper, lead and zinc. Principal silver minerals include compounds of sulfur, antimony, arsenic, and copper. Silver chloride, and argentiferous galena are also prime sources. Native silver and the chloride characterize the oxide zone of most deposits. Native silver can be concentrated, amalgamated, or cyanided. Silver chloride rapidly dissolves in cyanide without oxygen. Oxidized silver ores containing the higher oxides of manganese are generally refractory to metallurgical treatment. A refractory compound of manganese and silver is formed, probably a manganite , which is insoluble in cyanide solutions. Argentite is the predominant silver mineral. Other important economic minerals are native silver, argentiferous galena, cerargyrite, pyrargyrite and tetrahedrite. Argentite dissolves slowly, the reaction being reversible requires an excess of cyanide. Argentite with disseminated fine grained gold occurring in quartz veins with minor amounts of chalcopyrite and galena may be cyanided directly after grinding, with high silver and gold recoveries. The flowsheet adapted to this type of ore is the Minas de San Luis, Tayoltita cyanide plant, which treats a high grade argentite silver ore containing gold. It is a standard cyanidation circuit but employs long periods of agitation contact for the high silver sulfide content ore. Lead-zinc base metal semi-oxidized- complex ores in pipes and chimneys are replacement deposits in limestone at El Mochito Mine, Honduras. Mineralization comprises galena, cerussite, anglesite, sphalerite, calamine, and smithsonite. The silver content of about 16 ounces occurs as native silver globs, wire and the mineral argentite. After flotation of lead and zinc concentrates, the tailings are cyanided for gold and silver recovery. The great Huelva pyritic copper deposits of Spain carry a little gold and silver. At Cerro Colorado, these metals were concentrated above the chalcocite zone into the so-labeled Mgossanu. This material with a content of 0.08-0.09 oz Au and 1.50 oz Ag per ton is amenable to cyanidation. See Cerro Colorado flowsheet. In southern Hidalgo, about 60 miles north of Mexico City, are the great silver--gold veins of one of the foremost silver mining districts of the world. Real del Monte, Pachuca. One of the practical questions presented to the blast-furnace manager, with regard to which little help can be obtained from existing technical literature, is the manner of filling and blowing-in. This operation is often performed according, more or less, to traditions which have come down from earlier practice, and which, if not positively detrimental when followed with the large modern furnace, may at least be greatly improved, just as the running of the furnace itself, while in blast, has been improved. It is not necessary, as many of the old furnace-men believed, to make a lot of white or silver-gray iron at the start, or to spend many weeks, or months even, in bringing the furnace to its normal burden. It has seemed to me that the publication of carefully-recorded data of practice on this point may be interesting to the members of the Institute engaged in the management of blast-furnaces. The enlarged blast-furnace at the Durham Iron Works, Riegelsville, Pa., owned by Messrs. Cooper & Hewitt, of New York City, was first put in blast February 21, 1876, since which time it has made seven blasts, and is now running on the eighth. A description of the furnace-plant, together with a record of the fifth blast, was given in my paper read at the Chattanooga meeting, May, 1885 (Transactions, xiv., 130). After some of the early blasts the furnace-lines underwent considerable change, and I have thought best to accompany this paper with drawings showing the lines and the tuyere-arrangement (see Plates I. and II.), and to give also the following summary of the conditions and results of each blast. During the first and second blasts no coke was used, and the furnace ran very irregularly, showing a constant tendency to scaffold, which was attributed, in great part, to the small hearth and other defective lines. The large proportion of air required at this furnace is accounted for by the fact that the engines are defective, and do not deliver into the furnace the amount of air indicated by the pistondisplacement.
