The hot water process for Utah tar sands differs significantly from that used for Canadian tar sands due to inherent differences in respective bitumen viscosities and the nature of bitumen-sand association. These differences have led to the identification of certain design criteria necessary to achieve satisfactory phase disengagement during digestion (Sepulveda and Miller, 1978; Misra and Miller, 1980). Subsequent flotation of digested tar sand is a subject of current attention and is considered in this publication for the Asphalt Ridge deposit. Although contact angle measurements of solvent extracted Asphalt Ridge bitumen indicated moderate hydrophobicity, air bubble attachment to the bitumen concentrate is not possible. This surprising result suggests that flotation separation is dependent on air bubble entrapment rather than on air bubble attachment due to surface hydrophobicity. The entrapment of air bubbles in the bitumen was apparent from examination of the bitumen concentrate, especially at lower flotation temperatures. A factorial design of the major operating variables in flotation separation indicated that the quality of separation was significantly dependent on the flotation temperature and to a lesser extent on the degree of agitation. For a flotation temperature of 77°C a recovery of 96.7% was realized at a grade of 61.0% bitumen. The improved separation at higher flotation temperatures was found to be due to the decrease in bitumen viscosity resulting in more effective rejection of coarse sand from the concentrate. This research effort, which has been sustained for the past six years at the University of Utah, is being continued to provide necessary design data for the construction of a pilot plant to treat Utah tar sands.

BRASS is an alloy of copper and zinc. The brasses (using this term to denote all useful proportions of the two constituents) are the most valuable and widely employed of all [ ] nonferrous alloys, because of their high resistance to ordinary corrosive agencies and the very wide range of properties that may be imparted to them by variations in the proportions of the constituents and by variations in mechanical treatment and heat-treatment. Fig. I shows the normal physical properties, as determined by standard tensile tests, of the series when in the annealed condition. Fig. 2 shows the effect of varying amounts of cold-working on an almost pure brass containing 70 per cent copper and 30 per cent zinc. Fig. 3 shows the effect of annealing at various temperatures on the same alloy. This effect is somewhat modi- [ ] fied by the degree of cold-working to which a brass has been subjected, as shown by Fig. 4. A fourth test, which is empirical, has been found useful because of its simplicity the hot hammer test. Samples 1/2 in. in diameter and 3/4 in. long are placed in a suitable furnace. These are withdrawn one at a time at successively higher temperatures and are subjected to the blow of a drop hammer weighing 50 lb. with a drop of 4 ft. IN recent years, solders containing 20 per cent tin with no bismuth or cadmium have been developed by a few companies, and personnel have been properly instructed in their use. In addition, since the tin shortage, a number of solders containing less than 10 per cent Sn, and some with no tin, are being used in special applications; however, a solder of this type has yet to be developed that is satisfactory for general use. [ ] The purpose of this investigation was to develop an alloy containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin, with no cadmium or bismuth, having solder properties equivalent to or better than those of substitute solders now specified containing i8 to 20 per cent tin (Table I), or even approaching the properties of the standard 40 to 60 tin-lead solder. The wartime restriction of bismuth and cadmium, elements that have beneficial effects on fluidity, solidification range and strength, makes it increasingly difficult to develop a general-purpose solder containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin. In the course of this investigation, 11 elements were used in various combinations with the basic 15-85 tin-lead alloy. These elements were antimony, silver, copper, indium, thallium, lithium, calcium, barium, potassium, sodium and arsenic. In all, 116 low-tin solders were investigated, with the idea of developing a solder that will give satisfactory working properties, specifically in regard to "wetting" of copper, brass and iron, solidification range, capillarity and shear strength of a soldered joint. The relative importance of these various properties plays an important role in the search for substitute solders, since it is almost impossible to retain all of the desired qualities of a high-tin solder and still make drastic changes in the alloy composition. Because of the expected uses of a general-purpose solder, it is necessary that it have properties, especially in regard to wettability, that will enable it to be used on the metals in common use. BASIC CONSIDERATIONS The maximum liquidus temperature of a solder is determined by the particular application involved and the temperature that can be obtained by the source of heat.

Most mineral products are used in the finely divided state, but some are sold in larger sizes. Coal, gravel, metallurgical fluorspar, phosphate rock, hematite, chro-mite, and other products are sold in sizes coarser than can be treated by many mineral-dressing methods. Gravity separation of coarser sizes by log washing and jigging is probably as ancient as any process now in use. The performance of jigs on a feed with sufficient difference in density of the minerals is excellent, but many families of minerals are too similar in density to be separated effectively by this method. The use of heavy suspensions of fine solids to separate coarse coal from bone and slate has been in use for some years. This separation by sink-and-float was limited until recently to light minerals. Development of galena and ferrosilicon as suspension media, by Minerals Beneficia-tion, Inc., at Mascot, Tenn., Pitcher, Okla., and Crosby, Minn., under patents granted during and since 1938, has permitted excellent results to be obtained on minerals of very similar densities up to 3.3. This process has been put In the hands of American Cyanamid Co. for exploitation, and further research now in progress may increase the density of suspension obtainable so that separations at a density of 4.0 may be practicable before this is published. The Huntington-Heberlein dense-medium process, developed in England, is also being commercialized in the United States by Sink and Float Corporation. Du Pont has developed a sink-and-float separation using halogenated hydrocarbons as parting liquids; at this writing, the method is used commercially only on coal but has been successful in the pilot plant on many other minerals using tetrabrom-ethane at densities up to 2.95. While these processes were being developed to extend the range of separation by difference in density to the coarser sizes, the Bureau of Mines was engaged in developing a process that will extend the range of separation by difference in wettability up to 2-in. size. War work has pushed aside its further development indefinitely. The results are published here with the hope that some use may be suggested that will justify post-war development, and so that readers that may be able to make immediate use of the scheme may have the information. THE correct sampling of coal and coke is becoming important to an ever increasing number of producers and consumers. This, therefore, may be an opportune moment to examine where we stand with regard to existing and proposed methods. In this paper an attempt will be made to review, as briefly as possible, some of the considerable amount of painstaking research which has been done in the last 10 years, and which has unquestionably led to a much better understanding of the subject. In so doing we shall try, on the one hand, to make clear where substantial progress has been made, and on the other hand, to draw attention to points that require further investigation. The paper is divided into sections in order to emphasize the major divisions of the subject; further, in order to retain this emphasis, detailed consideration of some of the points has been relegated to appendixes. No attempt has been made to give a complete survey of the literature, as this has already been done by L. A. DURING the course of an investigation of the effects of various starch products on hematite and quartz in regard to their separation by' flotation, it was found that whereas most starches flocculated suspensions of hematite in water, they did not flocculate similar suspensions of quartz. However, a derivative of whole corn starch containing approximately one tenth aminoethyl group (--CH2CH2NH2) per glucose unit proved to be an exception. This aminoethyl starch was a very good flocculant for both hematite and quartz, and also possessed the property of depressing both minerals in cationic flotation tests. In view of the widespread use of starch as a flocculating agent of solids in tailing water, pulps, and for coal slimes, ore and various other purposes in sulphide and nonsulphide flotation, attention is called to the effective surface activity of aminoethyl starch in flocculating suspensions of the two minerals investigated. Test Materials The starch products employed included Globe Pearl starch No. 144 and fresh aminoethyl starch, both supplied by the Corn Products Refining Co. Dr. A. L. Elder[4] has kindly furnished a description The minerals used in the various tests are listed in Table I. Their specific surfaces were determined by the air permeability method, which gave results reproducible to within plus or minus 3 pct. Surface areas obtained by krypton adsorption were greater than the air permeability values by a factor of 2.0 for quartz and 62.4 for hematite. Starch Adsorption on Mineral Surfaces Starch adsorption data were obtained by agitating for 1 hr measured volumes of neutral starch solutions of known concentrations with weighed quantities of finely divided mineral of measured specific surface. The mineral then was separated from the pulp liquor by centrifugation and the residual starch content determined by chemical analysis. The analytical procedure consisted of oxidizing the starch with an excess of dichromate in acid medium at elevated temperature and titrating the excess dichromate by the ferrous ammonium sulphate-potassium permanganate method. Analytical results were reproducible to within less than 1 pct. Adsorption data obtained in unbuffered solutions near the neutral point are plotted in Fig. 1. The adsorption on either mineral was far greater for the aminoethyl starch than for the Pearl starch. Flocculation The degree of flocculation was determined for a given pulp by measuring the time required for the supernatant liquid to reach a certain degree of clarity. This was accomplished by passing a standard light beam through the pulp, contained in a glass settling tube, and measuring the time required after agitation ceased for the intensity of the transmitted beam to reach a predetermined value. Starch reagent was added to each pulp in small uniform increments, and the settling time was determined after each such addition. Increase in pulp liquor volume due to the added starch reagent was ignored in these tests. Pulps were maintained at or near neutrality.

Flotation may be defined as a process whereby mineral particles are concentrated by selective adhesion to air-liquid interfaces. The process involves attachment of desired mineral particles to air bubbles, and removal of the mineralized air bubbles from the surface of the pulp as a mineral concentrate. Problem Although great strides have been made in understanding the principles of flotation, one part of the process which has not been adequately explained is the mechanism by which selected mineral particles become attached to air bubbles. A glance at the froth of an operating flotation cell demonstrates adequately that use of proper reagents and conditions mill result in such attachments; but how such attachment takes place is not definitely known. A better knowledge of this factor might lead to improved flotation practice either through altered machine design or the application of scientific innovations. Direct observation of the behavior of mineral particles and bubbles in an operating cell does not appear promising because of the complexity of the system. For this reason, conclusions concerning the problem must be deduced from theoretical considerations or from observation of simplified systems designed to reproduce conditions thought to exist in an operating cell. Present Theories Two mechanisms have been recognized as fundamental in particle-bubble attachment: gas precipitation and direct encounter. It is a simple matter to demonstrate in the laboratory that attachment can be brought about by either mechanism. As to the relative importance of the two in a particular flotation system, however, there is a divergence of views. Taggart1 states, Under exceptional circumstances sufficient force and time to effect attachment may conjoin in an ore pulp undergoing agitation, and a preformed bubble adhere to a collector-coated mineral particle, but the occurrence is rare. . . . Pulp-body froth flotation effects selection in the body of a conditioned pulp by causing gas bubbles to precipitate from solution in the liquid phase preferentially at the surfaces of collector-coated particles, and to cling to these particles, Gaudin2 states that, within the pulp body of an agitation machine, attachment of mineral particles to air bubbles occurs as a consequence of contact between the two. This theory has been supported by theoretical reasoning and much circumstantial evidence. The iron-mines of the Ilsede Hutte Co. are at a town called Peine, about 20 miles east of the city of Hanover, on the railroad to Brunswick (Braunschweig). Hanover, the capital of the province, is a military city, of approximately 250,000 inhabitants, and Brunswick, 33 miles to the westward, has half this number. The mines here described are located in a hamlet called Bulten. The Ilsede Hutte Co. operates two mines, 1.5 miles apart, in this district, Gruber Bulten Adenstadt and Gruber Lengede Bodenstadt. It also operates an iron-mine north of Hanover, known as Eiserhaven, and one in the Harz mountains, the Georg Friedrich, at Grauhof. At Bulten a coarse conglomerate, a, Figs. 1 and 2, contains nodules of limonite, cemented together by calcium phosphate. The ore contains Fe, 25 to 45; Mn, 3 to 4; P, 0.6 to 1.4; '5, 0.02 to 0.09; and CaCO,, 40 per cent. Directly above the conglomerate is limestone, 6, followed by a mixture of clay and sand, c. Below the conglomerate is a hard clay floor, d. The ore-body, from 10 to 12 km. long, and from 3 to 4 km. wide, has a maximum thickness of 20 m. It dips approximately 10" S.E., and strikes K 45° E. Diamond-drill prospecting shows that the thickness diminishes to 1 m. as the end of the deposit is approached to the northward. At this point the deposit is 250 m. below the surface. In Fig. 2, the arrow, A, indicates the general direction of the work along the face, a, which is carried forward in a straight line for its entire length. At B, a train is approaching, which has come from the bench-track, shown at C, by a circuitous route, and is dumping the overburden behind the face, in the space left by the excavated rock. INTERNATIONAL ENGINEERING CONGRESS This Congress will be held under the auspices of five National Engineering Societies, of whi h the Institute is one. The sessions will be held in 11 sections and the proceedings will be published in 10 volumes of 500 pages each, of which Volume 8 will contain the papers and proceedings on Mining Engineering and Metallurgy. The membership fee of $5 will entitle the holder to the volume of General Proceedings and Index, and, in addition thereto, any other single volume chosen. Other volumes may be subscribed for according to a sliding scale depending upon the number of volumes taken. The Institute will have a meeting in San Francisco during 1915, and it is desirable for our members to join the International Engineering Congress at in early date in order that their support of the enterprise may be given in its early stages, when it is most needed.

THE valuable mineral content of the current feed to the Miami concentrator is as follows: copper, 0.7 pct total; molybdenum, 0.01. Flotation of this ore yields a sulphide concentrate containing: chalcocite, 44 pct; molybdenite, 0.5; pyrite, 50.0; insol, 5.5. A combination of potassium ethyl xanthate and pentasol amyl xanthate as collectors, and pine oil, as frother, are used in this flotation. Rejection of pyrite is encouraged by holding the amount of collectors used to the minimum consistent with copper recovery and by operating at high alkalinity (equivalent to 0.35-0.40 lb CaO per ton solution of pH 11.0).

Each of the three refining furnaces in use at Great Falls is provided with a waste-heat boiler. The general arrangement of furnace and boiler is as shown in Fig. 1. Two of the furnaces have hearths 45 ft. 7 in. by 14 ft. 6 in.; the third has a hearth 46 ft. 101/2 in. long and of the same width as the other two. The furnaces at present are equipped for firing with natural gas. As originally constructed two of the furnaces had hearths 36 by 14 ft., and were designed to use coal on grates, but these furnaces were lengthened and fired successively with pulverized coal and oil. The third furnace was added in 1926 and was oil-fired until 1928. Since that year natural gas has been in use on all of the furnaces. The changes that have occurred in connection with furnace design and the comparative performance of the furnaces with various fuels were described1 by the author in 1932. Two of the furnaces are provided with Stirling class A-30 boiler. rated at 400 hp. and having 4008 sq. ft. of heating surface. The thir furnace has a class A-21 Stirling waste-heat boiler rated at 300 hp. with 2805 sq. ft. of heating surface. The boilers are not baffled. The waste-heat boilers are placed on a platform 17 ft. 3 in. above the level of the furnace charge floor. The waste gases from the furnace pass by a vertical uptake flue, 4 by 3 ft. inside at the point where it enters the chamber, to a brick chamber from which the gases pass over a bridge wall and into the boiler setting. The uptake flue and chamber are constructed of silica brick. Each furnace has a steel stack 125 ft. high, measured from the boiler floor. The stacks have a 41/2-in. firebrick lining and are 5 ft. in diameter

THE simultaneous influence of time and temperature upon the tempering process in steel is well known. Hollomon and Jaffe¹ have expressed the effect of time and temperature upon the progress of tempering by a single parameter, T (c + log t); where T is the absolute temperature; t, the tempering time; and c, a constant characteristic of the steel and treatment. It was found that when hardness data for plain carbon and low alloy steels were plotted vs. this parameter, a master tempering curve was obtained which satisfied all the data for a given steel and a given hardening treatment. Roberts, Grobe, and Moersch² successfully applied the tempering parameter to various tool steels, including high speed steel for tempering times ranging from 6 min to 100 hr. The influence of tempering time and temperature upon the physical properties of high speed steel has also been extensively investigated.'" Recently, the use of induction heating for very rapid tempering treatments has received attention. The authors% have shown that tempering treatments of only a few seconds duration may be successfully applied to plain carbon and low alloy steel. However, the influence of such short tempering treatments in high speed steel has not been explored. Since high speed steel is a highly alloyed steel exhibiting physical reactions during tempering that are often relatively slow and large in magnitude, it is an interesting steel for the study of tempering reactions. It was the purpose of the present investigation, therefore, to study the early progress of reactions leading to secondary hardness in high speed steel, type 6-5-4-2, and to determine if induction-tempering treatments of a few seconds duration are able to produce results equal to those of more conventional long-time tempering cycles. Experimental Details The chemical compositions for two different heats of W-Mo high speed steel used in this study are given in Table I. Table II summarizes the heat treatment given various groups of specimens cut 21/2 in. long and centerless ground to ¼ in. diam. Hardening treatments consisted of preheating to 1600°F (870°C) for V2 hr and then oil quenching from 2250°F (1230°C). Heat I was subjected to the high temperature in a salt bath for 3 min, while specimens of heat II were austenitized in a carbon-block muffle furnace for 10 min. Specimens of series E were immediately refrigerated to — 318°F (— 195°C) in liquid nitrogen following the hardening treatment to transform the major portion of the retained aus-tenite. Specimens of series F and G were subzero cooled to — 100°F (-75°C) in a dry ice-alcohol mixture. Induction tempering was performed with a Lepel high frequency converter operating at a frequency of approximately 300,000 cycles per sec. Heating cycles were controlled and recorded for each specimen using a chromel-alumel thermocouple, percussion welded to the surface of the specimen, and a modified high speed instrument with a timer previously used and described.' Temperature oscillation of the specimens, while being held at the tempering temperature, was ± 15°F (8°C). Tempering Treatments: After hardening, specimens were tempered between 900" and 1500°F (480" and 815°C) to study the progress of retained austenite decomposition and secondary hardening. The specimens tempered in salt for 1 hr (series C, G, and I) were considered to represent conventional treatment and are used for comparison with rapid tempering treatments. Several induction-tempering cycles were employed: 1—flash tempering, i.e., induction heating to the tempering temperature and immediately cooling (series A, E, and F); 2—induction heating for 60 sec at temperature (series B); and 3—double-induction tempering by two successive heating and cooling cycles (series D). All specimens tempered by induction were heated at an initial rate of 450°F (250°C) per sec except those of series E, which were heated at an initial rate of 1300 °F

In these opening remarks, I will endeavor to give a background of continuous casting of metals. Only passing attention will be given to the different processes to be described by the authors whose papers are on the program, as they are far more familiar than I am with their subject matter. Suffice to say that over the past several years the brass, copper, aluminum and magnesium industries have shifted practically completely from conventional static molds to continuous casting machines. The Aluminum Company of America alone has more than 60 continuous machines in operation. The product as continuously cast is superior metallurgically, less scrap loss is involved, costs are generally lower, and the equipment requires little floor space. A continuous machine, operating as it does with deadly constancy, is a ravenous consumer of molten metal, and in most plants one or two machines are well able to handle large banks of melting and refining furnaces. In steel, interest in continuous casting is today more serious than ever before in history, and there is every reason to believe that continuous machines may secure a minor place in the ferrous industry, particularly for tool and alloy analyses. In the past, steel has been commercially cast continuously, and today many tons of steel are being turned out in this manner. It has been said that the cradle of every science is surrounded by dead theorists— and certainly there are innumerable examples of this in the metals industries. An excellent illustration, for instance, is the continuous rolling of metal, a tantalizing objective that for decades on end exhausted . the efforts of a long line of famous, infamous and unknown inventors. Finally, in 1922, John B. Tytus, of the American Rolling Mill Co., brought forth what now seems such an obviously simple scheme— a concave roll face, each stand of progressivcly less concavity. And out of this one change in design sprang today's wide continuous mill rolling steel sheet Ioo in. wide at 2000 ft. per minute. Another excellent example is the con- . tinuous casting of liquid metal into an intermediate form, preferably one requiring little subsequent breakdown. First, the casting of liquid metal alone was fascinating enough. Then someone passed the cast metal directly into a rolling mill, and shortly thereafter this continuously rolled strip was passed directly into a stamping machine. This leitmotiv of a continuous flow of metal from the liquid phase to a consumer end product, fast and inexpensive, and all housed within a small space, was enough to drive some 200 or so inventors into frenzy over the past hundred years. All the ideas, however, like mayflies, had only their brief afternoon of existence. They were born and they died on paper, as constant exemplification of that great void that always exists between mental production and commercial production.

Additives used in conjunction with salt in these slurries have included silica flour, calcium ligno-sulfonate and cellulose retarders, granular lost-circulation materials, bentonite and selected low-water-loss additives that are not significantly deteriorated by the presence of the chloride ion. In some other areas of South Texas, the salt-saturated slurries have been used quite extensively for improvement of the flow properties of slurries and attainment of better circulation characteristics at lower displacement rates. Concurrently with this property, the protection of shales and shaly sands is also realized, as well as useful retardation of the slurry. Resultant superior cementing jobs have been indicated by both communication tests and acoustic logs for bonding to pipe and formation.' In one section of Louisiana, a major oil company has been using salt-saturated API Class A cement with calcium lignosulfonate retarder for cementing through the Miocene at 9,000 to 10,000 ft. This is another of the situations where interbedding of sands and shales exists, creating difficulty in maintaining formation competency when a fresh-water slurry contacts the clay minerals of the formation. Further work has also been done in the shaly Miocene formation at 13,000 to 15,000 ft where fairly close water or gas contacts are encountered. Indications thus far are that better segregation of these various fluids is obtained by use of the saturated salt slurries because of their improved formation bonding characteristics. In addition to the properties of salt in this situation, attainment of turbulent flow at minimum displacement rates has also been accomplished by use of an additive to help provide exceptional dispersion and viscosity reduction of the slurry. Another oil company was encountering considerable expense in completing wells in Southwestern Louisiana due to extensive block squeeze requirements for effective separation of zones. A very effective mud program was being used to minimize washout in the shale sections and, apparently, a nearly gauge-size hole was being obtained. However, primary cementing results with fresh-water slurries were generally poor. On a few occasions when slurry was actually circulated to the surface, large pieces of shale formation were brought out of the hole with the slurry, indicating a severely water-sensitive, sloughing formation. Inhibition of shale heaving was being accomvlished in the drilling program, and immediately indone ipon circulation of the fresh-water slurry even though it contained a low-fluid-loss additive to reduce filtrate damage in the sands. The subsequent change to salt-saturated slurry yielded 11 successful primary cement jobs out of 12, compared to the previous success ratio of practically zero. Since these were deep, high-temperature wells in the range of 13,000 ft with high-pressure zones necessitating 17.5-lb/gal fluid densities, the slurry used was API Class E cement, silica flour, weight material, retarder, salt saturation (which also reduced the amount of weight material) and maintenance of low fluid loss by use of a salt-compatible additive. Other salt slurries have been used to a limited extent in this same general area for similar problems at depths ranging from 5,000 to 17,000 ft. In the shallower wells, the cement has usually been API Class A where the salt functions as a retarder, and in the deeper wells API Class E cement is used with the additional salt advantage being its increased slurry weight and inability to dissolve salt stringers. A considerable number of squeeze jobs have also been done on older wells using the salt-saturated slurries with very good results. MID-CONTINENT In North Texas, salt-water slurries have been used for cementing the Woodbine sand, Strawn sand, KMA sand and Pettit lime. Shales surrounding these formations have created the same difficulty in obtaining separation of producing zones that has been the problem in other areas. Depths in this area range from 3,400 ft for the Strawn to 7,400 ft for the Woodbine, and concentration of salt has varied accordingly. In the deeper wells, where retardation is desired, saturated salt-water cement is used; for the shallower wells, in order to provide shorter waiting-on-cement times, the amount of salt has been 18 per cent by weight of the mixing water. Results have been excellent with no reported failures on any of the salt cement jobs; where acoustic bond logs have indicated indifferent bonds previously, they are indicating very good bonding for the salt slurries. In Oklahoma various shales of Pennsylvanian age exhibit a high degree of sloughing in the presence of fresh water, causing severe washouts above and below sand formations which it is desired to isolate. This situation exists to some degree in practically all parts of Oklahoma and includes formations of other ages such as the Wood-ford shale. For the past few years, salt-saturated cements and displacement rates as high as practical have been used as a remedy for this problem, with very good results. The Layton and Bartlesville formations are two examples of shaly sands where saturated slurries have been helpful. In one area where five wells were drilled through this type of problem shale without obtaining a satisfactory primary cement job, a change was made to salt-saturated cement preceded by a suitable chemical wash for the drilling mud involved. Acoustic bond logging indicated excellent bonding, and final completion bore out this result by being trouble-free. This type of slurry has also been used extensively on squeeze jobs where shales have been heaving around the producing formations. Predominantly, the basic slurry has been either API Class A cement or a pozzolan cement—although, as deeper wells are being drilled, the use of salt in Class E cement is also increasing. Salt cement in West Texas has been used primarily to help prevent channeling through the shales around the Delaware sand, Queens dolomite and Hope lime. Many of the shaly and dirty sands of this area are sensitive to the filtrate from a fresh-water cement. Salt at 16 to 18 per cent by weight of mixing water has been added to centent, and has been effective in controlling formation damage and communication between zones in these formations. Use of these lower salt concentrations is dictated in this area by the relatively low formation temperatures where retardation of the slurry would create unduly long waiting-on-cement times. Also, quite a bit of cementing has been done in this area using salt concentrations in the accelerating range— that is, 2 to 5 per cent by weight of water. Specifically, these concentrations have been used in coiljunction with high percentages of gel to overcome the retarding effect of the calcium lignosulfonate dispersant, although there are probably several shales where these concentrations could provide some degree of formation stability. On several occasions, the salt has also been used to lower the critical velocity or rate for turbulence with the slurry, particularly in the pozzolan cements. On wells in the Hope lime, it has usually been necessary to squeeze the shale above and below the lime to get a water-free completion. Use of salt-saturated slurries has largely eliminated this

Evidence is presented to show that certain coals can be super-cleaned, using present coal preparation processes, to reduce sulfur below levels that are commonly believed to be possible. The evidence points to the need to develop continuous sorting methods by which coal coming from a mine can be segregated so that different raw coal types can be processed separately to produce a super-clean coal in addition to coals cleaned to more common levels of sulfur. Evidence is presented and techniques discussed that may be applicable for making the method feasible.

A theoretical investigation has been made of the forward combustion process using a one-dimensional linear mathematical model, taking into consideration the effect of the vaporization-condensation which occurs on the leading edge of the heat wave. This work involves the solution of five coupled partial differential equations. Besides the vaporization-condensation phenomenon, these equations account for conduction, convection, combustion, heat loss, diffusion and bulk fluid flow. For the one-dimensional linear model studied, the vaporization-condensation phenomenon does not induce appreciable change in the temperature at the combustion front; and its primary effect is to create a steam plateau and to increase the length of the heated zone ahead of the combustion front. This effect becomes more pronounced at lower pressures, higher porosities or reduced gas saturations. The peak temperature and the temperature profile on the leading edge of the heat wave stabilize after a certain period. The length of the steam bank remains practically constant, although the length of the water bank increases as the heat wave advances. INTRODUCTION The existence of the vaporization-condensation phenomenon in the heat-wave process and the important role played by the phenomenon have been recognized by several investigators. Kuhn and Kochl stated that steam plateaus were frequently observed on the temperature records of their experiments. The steam plateaus were attributed primarily to the vaporization and subsequent condensation of the interstitial water existing in the oil sand. Szasz2 suggested that both lighter hydrocarbons and water are vaporized on the leading edge of the heat wave, carried forward in the gas stream, and then condensed to create banks of oil and water. Martin et al suggested that the vaporization-condensation phenomenon is one of the main mechanisms of the heat-wave process, along with thermal expansion and viscosity reduction. Wilson et al. reported the existence of a steam plateau several inches in length in their small-scale tube-run experiments. However, this important phenomenon has never been taken into consideration in the numerous theoretical analyses by various authors. 5 The purpose of this work was to study the thermal aspects of a linear heat wave, taking into consideration the vaporization-condensation on the leading edge of the wave, to determine the effect of this phenomenon on the temperature profile of the reservoir, and to investigate how this effect varies when other process variables are changed. THEORY We consider a reservoir of porous medium of cross-sectional area A, extending from x = 0 to x = L. This reservoir contains, aside from the solid matrix itself, a gas phase and a "combined liquid phase" which is a combination of two immiscible liquid phases — namely, an oil phase and a water phase. The oil present in the reservoir is assumed to consist of three fractions, a noncondensable gas, a nondistillable residuum, and a vaporizable oil fraction which may be present in both the gas phase and liquid phase. Before the heat-wave process begins, preheating has taken place and has imparted an initial temperature distribution T,(x) to the reservoir. At the start of the process, a stream of oxygen-bearing gas is introduced through the face at x = 0. This gas supports the combustion of the residual fuel and supplies the heat throughout the process. In order to develop a tractable system of equations, the model properties are postulated as follows: (1) the system is isotropic and homogeneous; (2) there is a uniform fuel content throughout the reservoir; (3) combustion takes place in a moving vertical planar region of infinitesimal thickness; (4) the temperatures of the fluids and the solid matrix are identical; (5) radiation is negligible; (6) the gas and liquid saturations are uniform throughout the reservoir and remain unchanged
