HOT-DIPPED heat-treated zinc coatings on sheet steel were examined with X-rays. The phases identified were compared with those listed in the modern literature of the zinc-iron system. The zeta (FeZn13) phase is shown to correspond to the phase found by Schueler (1925) in heat-treated zinc coatings. An investigation was undertaken to determine the phases present in hot-dipped FIG. This kind of coating on wire was studied some years ago by Schueler1 by microscopic and chemical methods. He reported a new phase, FeZn10. Later, Clark and Stillwell,2 using X-ray crystal analysis, identified a new phase in ordinary galva-nized wire, which was assumed to be the FeZn10 phase.

The Bradford Oil District lies in the northern part of McKean County, Pa., and the southern part of Cattaraugus County, N. Y. Although petroleum was first found in the producing sand in 1871, it was not until the early part of the year 1875 that a productive horizon was acknowledged to exist, even by those most largely interested in the production of the crude oil. It has been reported to me that the first well drilled in the valley of the Tuneangewant Creek (commonly called Tuna Creek) was drilled by F. E. Dean and brothers in 1865. This well was located on the Shepherd farm, near the present site of Custer City. One hundred and sixty feet of drive pipe was used, and the hole was drilled to the depth of 900 feet. The producing sand at Custer City is found about 1130 feet below the level of the railroad track. The Shepherd farm well was therefore abandoned over 200 feet above the top of the oil sand. The next well was drilled by the Dean brothers on the Clark farm at Tarport. Drilling was stopped at a depth of 605 feet, or over 400 feet above the top of the oil sand. In the year 1862 the old Bradford well, since known as the Barnsdall well, was drilled to a depth of 200 feet with a spring pole, and then abandoned. In the spring of 1866 the citizens of the village of Bradford concluded to club together and sink the Barnsdall well deeper. Rock engineering involves uncertainties which are large and difficult to quantify. The traditional design approach to these uncertain- ties has been conservatism, and has been satisfactory to the extent that failure rates are reasonably small. Yet, a price is paid for conservatism, and that price is not always small. Today, reliability and risk analysis are finding use in rock engineering. The introduction of such methods, usually under the name 'probabilistic design,' is controverisal. However, if the jingoism of both sizes in this controversy is stripped away, it appears that new insights about uncertainty in rock engineering are emerging.

Uranium deposits in the Spokane Indian Reservation, as well as those around Mt. Spokane, are essentially low grade, much of the ore containing less than 0.2 pct U3O8. The Mining Experiment Station of the Division of Industrial Research, State College of Washington, has been engaged in intensive research on the amenability of these low grade ores to froth flotation. The results: successful flotation of autinite, chief mineral constituent. At the outset of this work the goal was a concentrate of 1 pct U3O8 with a 90 pct recovery from ores containing less than 0.2 pct U3O8. Most of the work has been done on argillite ore from the Midnight mine on the Spokane Indian Reservation. The goal has not been attained using this ore, but samples of the granite ore from Mt. Spokane yielded successful results. For example, a concentrate containing 11.2 pcl U3O8 was produced from a Mt. Spokane high grade ore containing 1.27 pct U3O8 with a recovery of 97.8 pct. Another Mt. Spokane ore yielded a concentrate of 5.0 pct U3O8 from an ore containing 0.13 pct U3O8. with a recovery of 85 pct. This same ore gave a recovery of 93.5 pct when the grade of concentrate was reduced to 2.0 pct. It has been concluded that a successful method for floating autunite has been developed and that the mediocre results from the Midnight argillite ore are probably caused by the presence of some other uranium mineral or minerals less amenable to these reagents. The experimenters tested a third type of Washington ore, found on the Northwest Uranium Mines Inc. property on the Spokane Indian Reservation. This is a conglomerate of pebbles and small boulders of partially decomposed granite and is shot through with autunite. Its characteristics lie between those of the Midnight ore and the granite ore from the Spokane district. It responds better than the ore from Midnight but not as well as that from Mt. Spokane. As the fatty acids are the only type of collectors showing promise, investigation has been concerned with these acids and the optimum conditions for their use. The first method for treating the argillite ore from the Spokane Indian Reservation made use of Cyanamid's R-708 as a collector, a tall oil product described as a substitute for oleic acid. Although the investigators proved that R-708 is a collector for autunite when mixtures of autunite and silica sand are used, results on the ore were mediocre. Tests of other fatty acids revealed that the solid fatty acids of the saturated series are collectors for autunite and that their collecting power increases with the length of the carbon chain. The even carbon members of the whole series were tested from the 10 carbon acid (capric) to the 22 carbon acid (be-henic). The least expensive collector, stearic acid (18 carbon), proved to be a good one, so this was used in most of the tests. In first attempts with stearic acid, the collector was dissolved in various hydrocarbons and the solutions were added to the flotation cell. Cyclohexane, gasoline, fuel oil, kerosene, and other solvents were tried. Small amounts of high grade concentrates could be brought up, but recoveries were low. Finally emulsions of stearic acid were tried. It was discovered that stearic acid alone has little collecting power except when conditioning is carried out at high temperature. When hydrocarbon solvents were also present, it proved to be an excellent collector. An example of one emulsion that proved satisfactory for some ores is given as follows: 1 part stearic acid by weight, 1 part sodium oleate by weight, 1.2 parts kerosene by weight, 100 parts water. In some successful tests part of the stearic acid was replaced by oleic acid. The emulsions were made by agitating the stearic acid and sodium oleate together with hot water, then adding the kerosene and agitating while cooling. In the five tests reported in Table 1, 650 g of ore were ground with 650 cc water in a laboratory rod mill. The pulp was filtered to eliminate excess water and the ground ore transferred to a stainless steel beaker for conditioning at high pulp density. In most of the tests sodium hydroxide was added to the conditioner during agitation, then the collector emulsion, and finally the sodium silicate. The amount of alkali was adjusted to give a pH of 8.5 to 9.0 in the flotation cell. After conditioning the pulp was transferred to a laboratory flotation cell and the test completed in a normal manner. It is interesting to note that a deposit of high grade concentrate forms on the conditioning agitator and in the conditioning vessel, and at times on the agitator of the flotation cell itself. A few grams of concentrate running as high as 4 pct U3O8 were recovered from the conditioner when Midnight ore containing less than 0.2 pct U3O8 was treated. Six or seven years age the United States Bureau of Nines started development of instruments for the purpose of accurately measuring the vibrational movement of the earth in the vicinity of quarry blasts. V For this work a new type of seismometer has been developod.1/ A number of these have been constructed, the accessory field equipment has been assembled, and approximately 200 field tests of actual quarry blasts have been made. The results of some of these tests have been. published 2/ and others arcs the subject of two manuscripts now in preparation. So far the attention of the investigation has been centered on ascertaining the characteristics and behavior of the ground vibrations. Occasionally, when opportunity Prose, measurements of the vibrations occurring in houses or other structures caused by quarry blasts were made, but without Piny attempt et direct correlation or interpretation. During; 1936 the National Bureau of Standards conducted some experiments to determine the normal vibrations to which the walls and floors of buildings are subject. Cooperation of the Bureau of Mine's was requested in measuring the displace-ment. This afforded an opportunity to study the affect of mechanically induced vibrations end make limited comparison with previous records of vibrations from blasting. This paper duels with the experiments made in cooperation with the Bureau of Standards and includes soma comparisons with affects from quarry shots. The results are in the: nature, of , progress report only, and are not intended to draw definite conclusions. Those, tests were concerned with the determination of the maximum amplitudes of vibration possible in the floors and walls of a typical dwelling when subjected to commonly experienced vibrations. The dwelling tested was obtained by the National Bureau of Standards. It was a large four-story stucco building, 41 ft. south off the southerly curb of Park Road, in. Washington, D.C., which was constructed about 1900 and was supported on overburden. The basement floor elevation was approximately that of the pavement of Park Road. Park Road runs east and west; the front door of the house faced north.

This paper reports the results of a series of model displacement experiments carried out for measuring the efficiency of the water-drive process. This series forms a continuation and extension of that described by Engel-herts and Klinkenberg. Detailed information has been obtained on the influence of the oil/water viscosity ratio. The results are represented in the form of a diagram from which both the oil recovery and the water/oil ratio can be easily read off as a function of the total production (oil plus water) for all values of the viscosity ratio M between I and 500. These resu1ts are viewed in the light of the two existing theories on water flooding, viz. that of Buckley and Leverett and that of Dietz. It is shown that if the Buckley-Leverett theory applies, the relation between the relative permeability ratio and saturation, which plays a major role in this theory, (.an be calculated with a high degree of accuracy from the results of the model experiments. Dietz's theory is found to be in agreement with the experimental results in a certain range of circumstances. A discussion of the physical background of the Buckley- Leverett and Dietz theories makes it clear why the latter fails to agree with some of the experimental results. INTRODUCTION For an economical exploitation of oil fields both a rational control of natural (primary) recovery processes and a proper application of artificial (secondary) recovery methods are essential. These require detailed information upon the dependence of the relevant flow processes on the variables by which they are governed. Three methods are available for obtaining this information: (1) (statistical) analysis of actual field data; (2) appropriately scaled model experiments; and (3) mathematical analysis of the physical problem. If sufficient data were available, the first method would, in principle, be the most reliable one, although it has the drawback that the basic relationships between the variables involved are to a large extent obscured by the natural inhomogeneities of most reservoirs. The most profitable procedure seems to be: (a) determining the fundamental relations for idealized reservoirs by methods (2) and (3); (b) checking the consistency of the results obtained by these two methods; and (c) establishing the range of applicability of these methods to actual reservoirs by comparison with the data accumulated under (1). THE downward trend of metal prices seems to act something like a reagent that precipitates selfishness in most business men's hearts; in the same way the upward trend precipitates altruism. Operators do not say: "I continue working my mine without curtailment because I can afford the present prices while my neighbor cannot and thus will give me way." They say: "I continue working my mine because 1 consider it a service for consumers. They will get better prices on a free market. Any curtail¬ment would be an attempt to raise prices artificially, that is to say, bad economics." Copper producers have learned how fallacious is such an opinion. It perhaps was not fallacious in olden times when all mines were worked on a small scale even if operating on a big deposit. At that time the supply and demand law played fair. When prices were too low and profits were vanishing for many mines, they would. shut at once, then little by little the metal scarcity would induce prices to climb up again; finally these prices would reach the point when it became profitable to again work the closed mines. Re-opening and shutting down mines was then a normal custom. Workers and operators weakly deplored this unstability, but there was nothing effective they could, do about it.

The character of the Er-D system was established by determining pressure-temperature-composition relationships. A Sieuerts&apos; apparatus was employed to make measurements in the temperature range, 473" to 1223"K, the composition range of erbium to ErD3, and the pressure range of 10~s to 760 Torr. The system is characterized by three homogeneous phase regions: the nzetal-rich, the dideuteride, and the trideuteride phases. These phases and their solubility boundaries were deduced from the family of isotherms of the system zchich relate the pressure-temperature-composition variables. The equilibrium plateau decomposition relationships in the two-phase regions were determined from can&apos;t Hoff plots to be: The differential heats of reaction in these two regions are AH = - 53.0 * 0.2 and -20.0 *0.1 kcal per mole of D2, respecticely. The differential entropies of reaction are AS = - 36.3 * 0.2 and - 31.0 * 0.2 cal per mole D2. deg, respectively. Relative partial molal and intepal thermodynamic quantities were calculated from the pure metal to the dideuteride phase. The study of the Er-D system was undertaken as a logical complement to an earlier study of the Er-H system.&apos; The primary interest was to compare the characteristics of the two systems and relate the difference to the isotopic effect. Studies of rare earth-deuterium systems by other investigators have been very limited in number and scope. Furthermore, there is even less information available wherein an investigator has systematically compared a binary rare earth-hydrogen system with the corresponding rare earth-deuterium system. The available information consists primarily of dissociation pressure measurements in the plateau pressure region of a few rare earths. Warf and Korst&apos; determined dissociation pressure relationships for the La- and Ce-D systems in the plateau region and several isotherms for each system in the dideuteride region. They compared these data with those of the corresponding hydrided systems. The study of these systems as a whole was very cursory and did not give sufficient data for a thorough comparison of the effect of the hydrogen vs the deuterium in the respective rare earths. The heat capacities and related thermodynamic functions of the intermediate phases, YH, and YD2, were determined by Flotow, Osborne, and Otto,~ and the investigation was again repeated for YH3 and YD3 by Flotow, Osborne, Otto, and Abraham.4 This investigation studied only these specific phases. Jones, Southall, and Goodhead5 surveyed the hydrides and deu-terides of a series of rare earths for thermal stability including erbium. They experimentally determined isotherms of selected hydrides and plateau dissociation pressures for deuterides. These data allowed comparison of the enthalpy and entropies of formation of the dihydrides and dideuterides. To date, no one rare earth has been selected to thoroughly establish the complete pressure-temperature-composition (PTC) relationships of binary solute additions of hydrogen and deuterium, respectively. The objective in this investigation was to provide the first comparison of a complete family of isotherms of a rare earth-deuterium system with those of a rare earth-hydrogen system. This would allow one to determine what differences exist, if any, in the various phase boundaries and the thermodynamic relationships in various regions of the systems. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A Sieverts&apos; apparatus was employed to conduct the experimental measurements. Briefly, it consisted of a source of pure deuterium, a precision gas-measuring buret, a heated reaction chamber, a mercury manometer, and two McLeod gages (a CVC, GMl00A and a CVC, GM110). Pure deuterium was obtained by passing deuterium through a heated Pd-Ag thimble. A 100-ml precision gas buret graduated to 0.1-ml divisions was used to measure and admit deuterium to the reaction chamber. The reaction unit consisted of a quartz tube surrounded by a nichrome-wound furnace. The furnace temperature was controlled by a recorder-controller to . An independent measurement of the sample temperature in the quartz tube was made by means of a chromel-alumel thermocouple situated outside, but adjacent to, the quartz tube near the specimen. Pressure in the manometer range was measured to k0.5 Torr and in the McLeod range (10~4 to 10 Torr) to *3 pct. The deuterium compositions in erbium were calculated in terms of deuterium-to-erbium atomic ratio. These compositions were estimated to be *0.01 D/Er ratio. The erbium metal was obtained from the Lunex Co. in the form of sponge. The metal was nuclear grade with a purity of 99.9+ pct. The oxygen content was reported to be 340 ppm and the nitrogen not detectable. Metallographically the structure was almost free of second phase (<i vol pct). A quantity of sponge was arc-melted for use as charge material. The solid material was compared with the sponge in the PTC relationships. They were found to be identical. Therefore, sponge material was used henceforth, so that equilibrium could be attained more rapidly. The specimen size was about 0.2 gr for each loading of the reaction chamber. The Bingham Canyon Mine, located 48 km (30 mi) southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, is operated by Kennecott Copper Corporation&apos;s Utah Copper Division. This operation is the world&apos;s largest open-pit copper mine and produces 96 000 tons (106,000 st) ore and 327 000 tons (360,000 st) waste each day. This material is loaded by large electric shovels and transported by both truck and rail haulage. To meet the requirements of the Clean Air Act of 1970 (as amended), new facilities for the control of smelter emissions were required and are now nearing the final stages of construction. The facility will be capable of treating all the output from the mine, some 2,530 tons (2,789 st) per day of combined concentrate and precipitate. Costing $280 million and necessitating the replacement of reverberatory furnaces with continuous smelting vessels, the plant, with its massive and complex gas handling and acid-making facility, is required to remain on-stream with the minimum of pollution control equipment outages to conform with Federal Regulation 52.2325. As part of this giant effort, the smelter planning team and supervisory staff considered that new, well organized, highly flexible, readily available maintenance information was essential to assist the maintenance personnel in the performance of their duties.

Occurrrences of South African uranium have been known qualitatively for over twenty years, but no account was taken of them because of their low grade. In 1945, known uranium deposits were few, but their grades were 20 to 100 times higher than South African ores. Viewed in this light, the exploitation of South Africa&apos;s uranium is revolutionary indeed. Development of various analytical procedures capable of dealing with the needs of the project accounted for one-half of the cost and included: a) simple and automatic radiometric analytical procedures, b) sampling procedures appropriate to prevent sample contamination, c) procedures for sample and record-storing to accommodate many thousands of analyses per month, d) chemical methods giving high accuracy analyses for high grade samples not at radioactive equilibrium, and e) development of rapid procedures having moderate accuracy for low grade samples i.e., mill tailings and barren liquors. This task is continuing today with major improvements coming from time to time.

In order to better understand the fracturing process, bottom-hole pressures were measured during a number of typical fracturing operations. A recently developed system was used that allows simultaneous surface recording of both the bottom-hole and wellhead pressures on the same chart. The results from six fracruring treatments are summarized on the basis of the pressure data obtained. Al-though no complete analysis is attempted, the value of accurate pressure measurements is emphasized. Important characteristics of the bottom-hole pressure record do not appear at the wellhead because of the damping effect of the fluid-filled column. In four of the six treatments described, the formations apparently fractured during the initial surge of pressure with only crude oil in the well. The properties of the fluids used during the treatments are given and the fluid friction losses are obtained directly from the pressure records. This technique is also shown to be adequate for determining when various fluids, used during the process, enter the formation. INTRODUCTION Hydraulic fracturing for the purpose of increasing well productivity is now accepted in many areas as a regular completion and workover practice. Numerous articles have appeared in the literature discussing the various techniques and theories of hydraulic fracturing&apos;. In general, three basic types of formation fractures are recognized today. These are the horizontal fracture, the vertical fracture, and fractures along natural planes of weakness in the formation&apos;. Any one or all three of these fracture types may be present in a fracturing operation. However, with only the wellhead pressure record as a guide, it is difficult at best to determine if the formation actually fractured, and is almost impossible to determine the type of fracture induced. These difficulties arise in part because the wellhead pressure record, especially when fracturing through tubing, does not accurately reflect the pressure variations occurring at the formation. Several factors contribute to this effect and preclude the possibility of using the wellhead pressure as a basis for accurately calculating the bottom-hole pressure. These factors are: 1. The compressibilities of the fluids which damp the pressure variations. 2. The changes in the densities of the fluids or apparent densities of the sand-laden fluids. 3. The flowing friction of the various fluids and mixtures, which is dependent on the flow rates and the condition of the tubing, casing, or wellbore. 4. The non-Newtonian characteristics of a sand-oil mixture and its dependence upon the fluid properties, the concentration of sand, and the mesh size used. 5. The unknown and variable temperatures throughout the fluid column. Because of these reasons it was determined that in order to obtain a more accurate knowledge of the nature of fracturing, the bottom-hole pressure must be measured along with the pressure at the surface during a fracturing treatment. Even with accurate pressure data, a reliable estimate of the nature of fracturing is still dependent upon knowledge of the tectonic conditions. However, the hydraulic pressure on the formation is basic to any approach to a complete analysis. In order to accomplish this objective a system was developed to record the wellhead and bottom-hole pressures simultaneously at the surface. By recording both pressures on a dual pen strip-chart recorder, it was possible to greatly expand the time scale so that rapid pressure variations would be faithfully recorded. By such simultaneous recording, time discrepancies inherent in separate records are eliminated, thus overcoming one of the most difficult problems associated with bottom-hole recording systems. This paper illustrates the results obtained by using this system during six typical fracturing operations. All of these tests were taken in wells that were treated through tubing. By a direct comparison of the wellhead and bottom-hole pressures, the importance of obtaining complete pressure information during a fracturing treatment is emphasized. THE INSTRUMENTATION AND PROCEDURES The bottom-hole pressure measuring instrument consisted of a pressure-sensing element, a telemetering section, and a lead-filled weight or sinker bar. The pressure-sensing element used was an isoelastic Amerada pressure-gauge element. By using an isoelastic element, no temperature compensation was necessary in the tests described, since the temperature was believed to be well below the maximum temperature limit of 270°F. The rotary output shaft of this helical Bourdon tube element was coupled to a precision miniature potentiometer. Adsorption of lead and ferric iron on quartz and alumina is presented as a function of pH. Only the hydrolyzed species of these metal ions, FeOH++ and PbOH+, adsorb significantly on each of these minerals. Zeta potentials of quartz were measured as a function of pH in the presence of various additions of aluminum, lead, and magnesium salts. Sign reversal occurs at the pH values where significant concentrations of hydroxy complexes are formed. Models of adsorption are presented in the absence and presence of collector. The mechanism of adsorption of metal and collector species in the activation of nonmetallic minerals is still the center of considerable discussion in spite of the extensive study given this system. Until recently, the view was widely held that hydrated metal ions were responsible for this phenomenon. This fact is surprising, since it had been shown that the pH range in which flotation is effected corresponds to that in which metal ion hydrolysis occurs.&apos; Additional support of this concept was pro vided by the work of Wolstenholme and Schulman in another system.&apos; Later work has shown that hydroxy complexes of metal ions are the active species. These studies have also indicated that basic aqueous complexes of metal-collector may be necessary for flotation.3-7 Depending on the molecular weight of the collector, formation of these complexes may occur before or after precipitation of the metal-collector salt has occurred. Ion pair formation can occur when low molecular weight collectors are involved because relatively high concentrations of metal hydroxy complex and collector can be present in solution before precipitation occurs. This is not the case when high molecular weight collectors are used. A model of aqueous complex adsorption has been presented6,7 in which it has been assumed that adsorption occurs by the formation of water from adsorbed hydroxyl and hydrogen of the hydroxyl contained in the complex. Other authors8 have suggested that hy-droxy complexes are involved in these systems but that collector adsorption occurs by replacement of the hydroxyl of the adsorbed metal hydroxy complex with a fatty acid anion. All of these investigations have involved mineral surfaces that were negatively charged so that it is not possible to state with certainty whether hydrated metal ions or hydroxy complexes are the active species in this system. Use of a positively charged mineral should be helpful, however, since the hydrated metal ion will be repelled from this surface. On the other hand, if the hydroxy complex adsorbs by splitting out water, surface charge should have no effect because of the free energy decrease that the system will experience when water is formed. In this regard, sapphire is well-suited for study, since its surface is positively charged until approximately pH 9. Electrokinetic studies of quartz in the presence of various metal ions should also be useful in establishing the mechanisms of adsorption in these systems. That is, if the hydroxy complexes adsorb by water formation, drastic changes in the zeta potential should occur in the pH range in which hydrolysis occurs. In this view, adsorption of ions of widely different hydrolysis characteristics on both sapphire and quartz was measured. In addition, zeta potentials of quartz were measured as a function of pH in the presence of various metal ions and compared with flotation responses obtained under similar conditions. Experimental Materials and Techniques Reagent-grade aluminum, ferric and magnesium chlorides, and lead nitrate were used in this investigation. Adjustments in pH were made with reagent-grade HCl or KOH. Conductivity water, made by passing distilled water through an ion exchange column, was used in all of the experiments.

THE method of measurement of surface on quartz particles was given in a previous paper.1 With such a method the relation of surface produced in crushing quartz can be compared to the work in crushing without recourse to sieve sizing or microscopic measurement. In crushing, the work input must be known with a fair degree of accuracy. With crushers, rolls, ball mills, and similar apparatus the measurement of the work in crushing is subject to possible errors, due to friction in .the transmission as well as in the machine itself. Moreover, relatively large quantities of material must be crushed to get an average figure. In the selection of a method of crushing, simplicity in design and operation was desired and this was most readily obtained by the use of a free-falling body. A description of the apparatus embodying this principle is given herewith. THE CRUSHING DEVICE The apparatus used is shown in Fig. 1 and in cross-section in Fig. 2. The material to be crushed is placed in the crushing chamber C in the steel mortar M. The mortar is 3 in. dia. by 3 in. high. Two mortars are used, one having a crushing chamber 1-in. dia. by 1/2 in. deep, with a capacity of 4 g. of quartz, the other having a crushing chamber 1 ½ in. dia. by 3/4 in. deep, with a capacity of 12 g. of quartz. The position of the mortar is adjusted by means of three centering screws A. The steel plunger P, which fits neatly into the chamber, is placed on top of the material to be crushed. Plungers of different lengths were tried and as they were found to give practically identical results the length adopted was equal to the depth of the chamber.

TRANSCRYSTALLINE fracture surfaces of the cleavage type have been examined by microscopy and X-rays for several metals.&apos; These investigations revealed that the fractured surfaces were not flat and invariably had cleavage and other deformation markings on them. On the other hand, the study of inter crystalline fracture surfaces has been limited. Perryman, in a recently published paper on the inter crystalline fracture of ß-brasses,&apos; found that a thin layer of heavily deformed metal was invariably associated with these surfaces. Furthermore, the thickness of this layer was found to depend on the orientation of the grain boundary surface with respect to the applied stress. The mechanisms of grain boundary sliding and intercrystalline fracture have been presented in two previous papers,which described certain aspects of the deformation of a 20 pct Zn-A1 alloy. It is the purpose of this paper to present some observations on the structure of intercrystalline fracture surfaces and to correlate the structure of such surfaces with the mechanism of intercrystalline fracture. Experimental Techniques—The high purity 20 pct Zn-Al alloy was generously supplied by the Research Laboratories of the Aluminum Co. of America. Two sizes of specimen were used; the first had two parallel flat surfaces of dimensions 1x0.17x0.09 in. and the second was round with a 0.25 in. diam. A grain diameter of 1 to 3 mm was obtained by annealing the specimens at 1000°F for 24 hr. The specimens were then air cooled. The specimens were subjected to creep at 500°F and 2300 psi. The rupture times ranged from % to 3 hr, with one room temperature tensile test. It has been mentioned previous1y" that the intercrystalline fracture surfaces of this alloy, when tested under the conditions given above, are sharply defined. In the optical examination of the fracture surfaces, whenever possible, magnifications of at least X250 were used. The locations of the regions examined, both optically and by X-rays, were selected to give several fracture surface orientations with respect to the stress axis and to the specimen surfaces. This was possible for the X-ray studies since the grain diameters were large compared to the X-ray beam. A film to specimen distance of 3 cm, a 1 mm pinhole and Cr radiation were used for the Laue back reflection pictures.

Norris, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-I have had a little experience with gasoline locomotives and I want to indorse very strongly Mr. Hood&apos;s point with regard to the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning. I think .the terrible danger is not fully realized. I was foolish enough some time ago, in investigating a gasoline locomotive, to attempt to walk out of the mine entry behind it, and for several days I felt very seriously the carbon monoxide effects. The use of gasoline locomotives ought to be confined to mine entries where there is a very large amount of air. One of the grave dangers is their great convenience and the temptation to run them into chambers for just a few moments to get a car or two. GEORGE S. RICE, Pittsburgh, Pa.-Apparently one of the great dangers is in the style of the gasoline engine. When my attention was. first directed to the type of gasoline locomotives which I saw in the foreign mines-France, Belgium, and Germany, I was most favorably impressed with them, and they have given no trouble on account of fumes, so far as I could learn. Large numbers of them were being used, but all were of small capacity, and of a kind in which the speed control is by a governor of the hit-or-miss type, the engine running continuously. Their power capacity was very low, if I remember correctly it was not over 4 or 5 h.p., but they were used under favorable conditions where the grades in the mines were slight, since the entries or tunnels bad a slight grade in favor of-the load, making about the same pull for the empties against the grade as for the load with the grade. I understand the hit-or-miss valve arrangement enables a setting that will give more perfect combustion than can be insured with the valve controlled by the operating man, as in the automobile type of valve and engine used in this country. Apparently the European type of locomotive does not have the capacity to permit use under the conditions existing in this country, where most of our entries or tunnels have variable grades and long heavy trips of mine cars are used.

A dynamic regional coal development model is constructed for the Eastern Powder River Basin of Wyoming. Using this model, alternative development schedules from a recent environmental impact statement submitted to the Department of the Interior are simulated (Ref. 1). These alternatives include different mixes of export capacity, different coal conversion techniques within the region, as well as various levels of coal production. Exportation of 70 to 80 percent of an ultimate coal production of 180 million tons (163.3 x l09 kg) per year and the careful phasing of additional public services with population growth effectively reduce the social and environmental impacts of coal development. The alternative involving the addition of 43,000 megawatts of electrical generation capacity has very significant adverse social and environmental impacts on the region.
