IN most branches of the mining industry it is a well-recognized fact that care must be taken to protect the mineral deposit from undue physical injury. It is comparatively easy to grasp this idea when the mineral is a solid and the lives of workmen depend directly upon the care with which it is removed from its natural position, but when the product is a liquid. drawn up from pools several thousand feet beneath the surface of the ground through openings only a few inches in diameter, it requires some imagination to picture underground conditions and the changes which must often occur. The development of the petroleum deposits of California has been attended by numerous accidents, the results of which are readily noticed at the top of the wells and in the profit and loss accounts of the operators. Determination of the cause of these accidents has been the subject of considerable study, which naturally has fallen upon men familiar with technical methods. The greatest damage to the oil deposits of California has resulted from water finding its way into the oil-bearing sands, and it is the purpose of this paper to set forth briefly this phase of the oil industry. Much of the material here presented has previously appeared inn publications issued by the California State Mining Bureau, which, under the direction of State. Mineralogist Fletcher McN. Hamilton, has investigated the subject and taken steps toward improvement of conditions. The writer, having been in charge of this branch of the Bureau work, has gained considerable knowledge of existing conditions.

DESPITE the fact that centrifugal fans were first developed for ventilating mines and that artificial ventilation was first practiced in mines, the lack of knowledge of mining men on mine ventilation in general, and on fan performances and characteristics in particular, is very much in evidence today. While it is true that mines are much better ventilated now than they were 20 to 30 years ago, we have made very little progress in the study of mine ventilation, or in mine ventilating fan design. Today the average mine operator is woefully dependent on the engineers of mine fan manufacturers when he is in the market for a fan, and this situation works to the disadvantage of both the operator and the manufacturer. The former may be imposed upon by an unscrupulous sales engineer and induced to buy a fan which is not the proper one for the mine; when it is operating it may be wasteful of power and even accessory to a serious mine disaster. More often, however, it is the fan manufacturer who is imposed on. If the operator asks the manufacturer to build for him a fan that will deliver a certain quantity of air against a certain specified pressure and requiring a specified number of horse power when operating under these conditions, the manufacturer may build a fan that will comply with these specifications to the letter. When the fan is installed it is frequently found that it is delivering a greater quantity of air against a lesser pressure or a lesser quantity of air against a greater pressure, and is requiring more horse power than specified in the first case and less than that specified in the second. In either case the operator usually upbraids the manufacturer for not meeting specifications, and refuses to pay for the fan. The trouble in either case outlined above is that the pressure necessary to force the specified quantity of air through the mine has been estimated incorrectly by the operator or his engineers. Evidence has been found for a (010)a?(111)B[102]a /,11[341]/B crystallographic relationship between the monoclinic a and B phases of plutonium during the a?B transformation. The results of an X-ray diffraction study, where [010] fiber textured a samples were used in the absence of suitable single crystals indicate that the (OIO)a planes become (111)B planes upon transformation under near-equilibrium conditions. The transformation strain along the fiber axis, which was the [010] direction, was measured dila-tomekically; the measured 8.5 pct expansion compares favorably with the 8.44 pct expansion in the in-terplanar spacing represented by the (010)a?(111)B relationship. From plots of the atom positions in each of the related planes, a correspondence was deduced between the [102]a, direction and the [341]B direction. Further analysis of the two lattice structures in the light of this relationship revealed a rotation about the [102] direction of 1 deg 43 min and a slight shearing in this same direction of about 30 min. THIS paper discusses the (B crystal structure of plutonium and the orientation relationship existing between the monoclinic a and B phases during the a?ß transformation. The kinetics of the a?ß and (3 — a transformations have received extensive consideration, and because of the crystallographic complexity of these phases, the question of the mechanisms by which these transformations occur is especially intriguing. Nelson and Shyne1 evaluated the existing experimental evidence and concluded, from the indirect evidence available, that both the ß ? a and a ? ß transformations occur by a martensitic process. Their data reveal the anisotropic nature of these transformations which suggests the existence of specific crystallographic relationships between the parent and product phases. In this paper, we are concerned with the confirmation of the existence of such a relationship resulting from the a ? ß transformation and the derivation of the crystallographic details necessary to specify it. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS X-ray diffraction and dilatometric data were obtained from samples of a plutonium having a [010] fiber texture. These cylindrical specimens, approximately 1 cm in diam, were prepared by transforming the ß phase to a under the influence of a uniaxially applied compressive load.' The [0l0] direction is parallel to the direction of applied stress; it is also perpendicular to the (010) planes. This correspondence between the plane normal and the direction having the same indices is, in the monoclinic a plutonium structure, restricted solely to this (010)[010] combination. Such a specimen was mounted in an evacuated, elevated temperature specimen holder on an X-ray dif-fractometer so that the diffracting surface was perpendicular to the fiber axis. The a diffraction pattern, Fig. 1, taken at about 115ºC, revealed the predominance of the (020) reflection. This monoclinic, P 21/rn space group yields no (0k0) reflections when k is odd. The temperature was raised slowly to 160°C to effect the complete transformation to the phase; then it was lowered to 120°C so that a diffraction pattern of the ß could be obtained near the a = ß equilibrium temperature for direct comparison with the a at the same temperature. The (3 diffraction pattern, Fig. 2, obtained under these conditions showed a (222) reflection relatively much more intense than in the random pattern. The other reflections appearing with sig-

The phenomenon of flake formation which may occur during cooling or room temperature aging of large steel sections is caused by a combination of hydrogen and stress. As such, the transformation characteristics of austenite in a particular section play a major role in the occurrence of flakes. Isothermal and continuous cooling studies demonstrated that flake formation is particularly sensitive to nature, distribution, and relative proportions of the microconstituents in the cooled sections. In the absence of transformation stresses, abnormally high hydrogen contents could be tolerated without flaking. Flakes were not found in the absence of transformation stresses. No correlation existed between average hydrogen content and flake formation where cooling stresses were low. Hydrogen in the steel was a necessary but not sufficient condition for flake formation. DESPITE a long history of laboratory and commercial investigations, the mechanics of hairline crack or flake formation in large steel sections remains unresolved. Recent publications1-5 emphasize that flaking is still a serious problem.* immediate cause of flaking is the pressure exerted by entrapped hydrogen gas that collects in small internal cavities or voids during cooling. When the temperature of steel is low enough to preclude extensive plastic flow, the cavity pressures cause local brittle fractures (flakes). 2—The microsegregation and transformation stress theory. According to this theory, flaking results from stresses arising from the volume changes accompanying the formation of martensite and/or low temperature bainite after a large portion of the section has transformed at elevated temperatures. The proponents of the hydrogen theory suggest that stresses from other sources may be additive to the stresses produced by hydrogen and may, in some cases, provide the increment of stress necessary to produce flakes. However, the critical aspect of this theory is that no stress, except that produced by hydrogen pressure, is believed to be sufficient in itself to produce flakes. For practical considerations, this means that the only safe thermal cycle is one that reduces the hydrogen content to some low critical level below which flaking will not occur regardless of the state of transformation. On the other hand, the transformation stress theory does not rule out the embrittling effect of hydrogen. This theory simply proposes that flaking does not occur in the absence of transformation stresses. With the transformation stress theory as a basis, commercial antiflaking cycles would be designed to complete the transformation of austenite prior to cooling to ambient temperatures. Both of these theories appear compatible with industrial experience. Antiflaking cycles, such as cooling at extremely conservative rates or soaking for periods of time in the upper subcritical temperature ranges prior to cooling to ambient temperatures, may allow the following: 1—diffusion of hydrogen out of the section and, as a consequence, reduction of the hydrogen content to some safe minimum value (hydrogen pressure theory) and 2—complete decomposition of the austenite at rela-

FROM their investigation of the martensitic transformation in Cu-Zn alloys, Greninger and Mooradian' concluded that there was no critical temperature at which martensite formation began in this system. Recent unpublished work by Gen-evray With two compositions of brass revealed the existence of a critical temperature, which is a function of composition and stress. In the work reported here the temperature range of the martensitic reaction was studied as a function of composition in high purity Cu-Zn alloys. The specimens were about 4 in. long with a diameter of 1/16 in.; their compositions are given in Table I. They were heated under vacuum for 5 min at 5" to 10°C below the temperature of incipient melting, and quenched into brine at about — 10°C. Specimens of alloys C, D, E and F were obtained with little or no precipitated a phase. Many attempts yielded only three usable specimens of alloy B, and even these contained appreciable amounts of a. All efforts failed to preserve metastable p in alloy A (containing 38.02 pct Zn and 0.002 pct each of Pb and Fe). The transformation was studied by measuring the electrical resistance during continuous cooling and heating of each specimen at similar rates. The cooling media were alcohol with dry ice from room temperature to — 78°C and a bath of petroleum ether and methyl cyclohexane (75:25), cooled by liquid nitrogen, from —78" to about —150°C. At Cobalt, Ontario, Canada, a lake was drained to facilitate mining, by the Mining Corpn. of Canada, during the spring and early summer of 1915. Previous to pumping out the water, great quantities of sands and slimes from concentrating plants had been discharged into the lake and during and after the lake's drainage, its basin was a receptacle for tailing products. As the writer was at work along the shore line as the lake was being drained, he had a good opportunity to observe the changes that took place as the water was withdrawn. Some adjustments between the incoming sands and the mud in the lake had taken place before pumping was commenced. One of the most interesting results was the appearance of a small dome in a path the writer traversed twice a day for several months; he remembers distinctly the difficulty of crossing this. Cobalt Lake owed its existence to the gouging out of a rock basin by glaciation. The long axis of the basin closely follows the strike of a thrust fault of about 500 ft. (160 m.) vertical displacement. The lake was originally shaped somewhat as shown. The length was about 3000 ft. (914.4 m.), the width at the lower lobe was about 1000 ft., and the width at the narrows probably 400 to 500 ft. The original depth of water varied from 20 to 30 ft. (6.1 to 9.1 m.), near where the island later was formed, to 60 to 70 ft. (23.6 to 27.6 m.) in the widest part of the lower lobe. At the narrows, the depth was 30 to 40 ft. Above the bed rock was sand, with boulders near the bottom, and mud. During the building of the railroad in 1903, considerable filling was done along the right of way. With the commencement of mining operations, about 1905, waste rock and mill tailings were dumped into the lake. One of the mining companies operated a hydraulic giant to remove the glacial debris from several hundred acres of rock surface; much of the sand and clay from this operation was deposited in the lake. About 1,500,000 tons of mill tailings, composed of sands and slimes, were discharged into the lake's waters previous to 1915. Most of this material

Subsidence has occurred in several areas of the upper Gulf Coast region of Texas, although in most cases this is not evident without precise instrumental leveling. As referred to in this report, the region com- prises about 7200 sq miles of the Gulf Coastal Plain and includes all or parts of the following counties: Harris, Fort Bend, Waller, Brazoria, Galveston, Liberty, Chambers, Orange, and Jefferson (Fig. 1 ). Topographic relief is low, ranging from sea level at the Gulf of Mexico to 300 ft or more in northwestern Harris County.

Periclase-type oxides were examined microscopically after being exposed to siliceous liquids. The rate of grain growth was found to be inversely proportional to the grain diameter. Grain growth proceeds more rapidly at higher temperatures, but is retarded by increasing liquid contents. aMag-nesiowiistites with higher MgO contents grow less rapidly than those with higher FeO contents. The growth rate is reduced by the presence of a second solid phase. The silica-containing liquid penetrates as a film between the individual magnesiowus tite grains. This is independent of time, temperature, amount of liquid, or the MgO/ Fe0 ratio. When present, olivine and spinel-type phases can provide a solid-to-solid &apos;&apos;bridge" between magnesioustite grains. THIS paper presents the results of a study of the microstructures of periclase type oxides in the presence of a silicate liquid. The purpose was to learn more about the effect of service factors such as 1) time, 2) temperature, and 3) liquid content upon A) grain growth, and B) liquid location among the solid grains. This study was prompted by the fact that periclase refractories are known to have very little solid-to-solid contact when the phases which are present are limited to periclase and liquid. Such a micro-structure gains industrial significance because it permits fracture during service when stresses are applied at high temperatures. The details of ceramic microstructures have not received extensive attention. This is in contrast to the extensive attention given to a) the phase relationships pertaining to refractory compositions, and b) the details of the microstructures of comparable metallic materials. A brief review will be made of the pertinent phase relationships and microstructural considerations in general, as well as of refractory compositions. a) Phase Relationships. This investigation was limited to those compositions in which (Mg, Fe)O was the solid phase. MgO and FeO form a complete series of solid solutions. Pure MgO has the name of periclase. The related FeO structure is called wustite. Both have the NaC1-type structure: however, wustite possesses a cation deficiency so that the true composition is Fe<10 even in the presence of metallic iron. The phase relationships involving solid (Mg, Fe)O and a silicate liquid are shown in Fig. 1. In this case. the liquid is saturated with (Mg, Fe)o. There-fore its SiOz content is below that encountered in orthosilicate liquids. As a consequence the liquid phase specie:; are primarily the following ions: and 0-&apos; plus occasional Fe+ ions. Two features are of importance: a) the liquid contains relatively small species and b) the liquid contains large quantities of the same species as the solid. viz., Fig. 2 shows the system, FeO-SiOz, which will be used in some of the discussions that follow. This diagram is the right side, vertical section of Fig. 1. Here, as pre\iously, the composition at the FeO end of the diagram is nonstoichiometric, varying from Feo.950 when the liquid oxide is in contact with the solid iron, to about Fe 0, when the solid oxide is in equilibrium with an atmosphere of equal proportions of CO and C02 at the solidus temperature. The Fe/O ratio will be maintained in wustite in the presence of SiO,. However, the FeM/Fe++ ratio in the liquid will be lower because of the effect OIF the SiO, on the activity of the FeO. With the addition of MgO to wustite, the over-all composition (IvZg, Fe)@, has a value of x lying between 0.9 and 1.0 when the COz/CO ratio is 1.0&apos;. b) Microstructures. In general, published attention to refractory microstructures has been directed toward the phase analyses that accompany compositional variations. This is illustrated by Harvey6 in his work on silica brick and by wells7 in his work on periclase brick. In each case, a series of altered zones is encountered which provides a sequence of phase associations. If due consideration is given to reaction kinetics, such an examination reveals phases that are compatible with equilibrium studies. Admittedly, however, it is often necessary to determine more complicated polycomponent systems to account for all the phases present.8 Relatively little attention has been given to microstructural geometry in ceramic materials. Certainly less attention has been given to this aspect of ceramic microstructures than to the size, shape, and distribution of the constituent phases in metals. THE aggregate number of "papers" read within any one year before more or less bored and bewildered audiences is simply appalling. We have seventy to eighty engineering societies alone, not to speak of the many hundreds of societies of every other imaginable kind. And each meets at least once a year to tell what it has found out since the last meeting. All this is very fine and fortunate, at least in the case of the scientific and technological societies; for if even only one significant discovery, one new truth, one new idea comes out at the meeting, the session has been abundantly justified. To many of us, not scientists or technologists, the scientific and technological societies seem to release by far the most useful and important information. What they have to say is often of prime importance directly to human life and to industry, and is perhaps even more important indirectly in its final influence upon social and economic conditions, thus ultimately determining the course of what we like to call civilization. The paper read by that quiet, unpretentious man on the platform ma; mean the revolutionizing of a great existing industry, the creation of an entirely new industry, the gain of millions of dollars to some persons, the loss of millions to others. But, lamentably,

FahRENHORST and schmid1 observed that zinc single crystals work hardened less rapidly when strained in liquid air (- 185°C)than in a bath at -82°C, whereas at higher temperatures the rate of work hardening decreased with increasing temperature, as would be expected. Cadmium and magnesium showed no such decrease at -185°C. At that time the observed anomaly for zinc at liquid air temperature probably seemed insignificant. However it later was confirmed2 by experiments in liquid nitrogen (-196°C) and in the mixture solid carbon dioxide-acetone (-77"C) and therefore appeared to be real. seeger3 then suggested that the anomaly might be due to the different wetting of the zinc crystals by the cooling media. Recently a new confirmation was obtained,4 however the cooling media again were different: the rate of strain hardening was found to be lower in liquid nitrogen and liquid oxygen than in pentane cooled to various temperatures down to -126°C. Ekperiments will now be reported in which the medium surrounding the specimen at the different temperatures was the same, namely gaseous air. The single crystals were made from "Overcor 99.99" zinc. They were grown in a vertical traveling furnace on seeds of nearly the same orientations. The diameter of the crystals was 5 mm and the length between shoulders 140 mm. The brass shoulders were stuck to the crystals by means of araldite. A thin steel wire was fixed to each shoulder and served to fasten the specimen to a Houns-field tensile testing machine. The crystals with the shoulders and part of the wires were surrounded by two concentric cylindrical containers. The coolant. either liquid air or ground solid carbon dioxide, was poured into the outer container only. During cooling the containers rested on a support which was removed when the straining was started. In order to check the temperature which the crystals would attain inside the inner container, a hollow bar of zinc in which a thermocouple was fitted was first mounted in the apparatus as a substitute for a crystal. It appeared that a constant temperature, respectively - 183° and -72°C, was attained inside the bar, if a soaking time of the order of 1 hr was allowed and if the outer container was constantly kept filled. Accordingly, this procedure was adopted for every tensile test. To take account of the large scatter, fourteen tensile tests were performed with liquid air and seven with solid carbon dioxide. The orientation of the crystals and the results are presented in the table, in which the symbols have the following meaning: 1 : temperature x : initial angle between basal plane and specimen axis : initial angle between slip direction and specimen axis a : shear strain at fracture 0: average rate of strain hardening = —-——- 100 t0 and Te representing respectively the critical shear stress and the shear stress at fracture. Despite the scatter of the a- and 8— values which is of the same order of magnitude as in the work reported by Seeger and Trzuble,4 it is evident that the strain hardening rate is significantly lower at -183°C thanat-72°C. The table also contains the average values calculated from Seeger and Trauble&apos;s results at the corresponding temperatures: z.e., four results at -183oC and two at-70°, -71°C. These authors calculated 9 in a slightly different way, but this is unimportant. The agreement between the a-values shows that both sets of experiments are comparable despite the differences in experimental techniques. The rates of strain hardening also agree and it may therefore be concluded that the anomaly is not

This paper describes the evolution of transportation at an important mining property, beginning at a time when the railhead was 400 mi. distant, and tracing the steps leading to the development of what is probably the heaviest ore train ever operated in underground mine service over narrow-gage tracks, a 300-ton ore train on a 20-in. track, at working costs closely approximating those obtained on systems involving much greater capital expenditure. Useful where geological and financial considerations render inadvisable the excavation and maintenance of large tunnels and heavier rolling stock. THE problem of transportation in the Clifton-Morenci district of Arizona has been one of peculiar difficulty and consequently has been an important factor in the cost of mining and treating the ores produced. From the crude beginning made over 50 years ago, many changes have been necessary to keep pace with the increased output of copper. A heavy-duty haulage system has developed on the original 20-in. track gage to meet the existent metal-mine conditions.

As already announced in the January Bulletin, this publication will be issued during the coming year monthly instead of bi-monthly as heretofore. Among other reasons for this change, it is desired to effect thereby the earlier transmission to members of important papers, lists of candidates for membership, and other items of timely information. Spokane Meeting and Excursions. Further details of the&apos; 97th meeting of the Institute have been sent to members in the Circular of May 8, 1909. For, convenience of the members a summary of the additional in¬formation is here presented. A special train of Pullman cars will leave Chicago about September 15. This train will be side-tracked at all places visited, and the sleepers will be available for lodging and the dining-car for meals during the entire trip, except during the Yellowstone Park tour. The general. cost of the trip per member will be $300, which includes transportation, berth, and meals for the entire trip from Chicago back to Chicago, almost 6,000 miles, and the tour through Yellowstone Park, occupying in all about 30 days. A larger, slow-speed, under-loaded ball mill and hydraulic classifier have almost doubled grinding efficiency at the lsabella mill. TENNESSEE Copper Co. operates two ore con-A centrators, the London and Isabella mills near Copperhill, Tenn. In 1948 and 1949 the small ball mills and rake classifiers in the London concentrator were replaced by one large ball mill and one hydraulic classifier. This new ball mill was designed oversize so that it could be operated at slower than normal speed. The proper operating conditions were established and the results published.&apos; Later it was found that this mill operated more efficiently with a small ball charge." While this London grinding practice was being developed, the Isabella grinding circuit was not changed in any way. It remained a conventional two-stage rod mill—ball mill combination, the rod mill in open circuit and the ball mill in closed circuit with a rake classifier. Study of the data indicated that grinding cost could be lowered by converting to the London practice, but not enough would have been saved to warrant the expense of converting. No plan for improving this grinding operation could be developed. In 1953 this study was reopened when plans were made to increase the Isabella mill output from 1150 to 1500 tpd. At this time the grinding circuit consisted of a 6x12 rod mill followed by a 6x12 ball mill in closed circuit with a 6-ft rake classifier. Another 6x12 ball mill and 6-ft rake classifier would have been sufficient equipment and would have been the simplest and cheapest installation. However, this would have offered no improvement in grinding efficiency or operating cost. If, on the other hand, the grinding operation could be converted to the London practice, by installation of one large 101/2x9x9 tricone mill and a 10-ft hydroscillator,2 lower operating costs would justify the additional investment. Economics: Table I presents estimates for the two schemes for enlarging the Isabella mill. In the first scheme, column 1, one 6x12 ball mill and one 6-ft rake classifier were to be added. In the second scheme, column 2, the existing small ball mill and rake classifier were to be retired and one large mill and hydroscillator were to be installed. Estimated savings from the difference in operating costs made an attractive return on the additional investment for the large mill and hydroscillator. Actual costs of carrying out this plan are tabulated in column 3b. It will be seen that these costs follow the estimates in column 3a very Closely. The return on the additional investment is calculated from the difference in the operating cost in column 1 and the actual operating cost in column 3b. This too come very close to the estimate. Power and Steel: Power requirements and steel consumption for the rod mills and ball mills, both actual and estimated, are presented in Table 11.

ThE useful properties of k6-Alfenol and the thermenol alloys (summarized by J. E. Nachman and W. J. Buehler&apos;) have encouraged research into those alloys which, having compositions near 25 at. pct Al, 75 at. pct Fe, undergo an ordering transformation between 500° and 550°C. The equilibrium diagram of the iron-rich iron-aluminum alloys was first determined by Bradley and Jay.2,3 They distinguished three structures: the disordered, which is bcc; FeAl, which is simple cubic with one Fe atom and one Al atom per lattice site; and Fe3Al, which is fcc with three Fe atoms and one Al atom per lattice site. This last structure may be conceived as eight body-centered cubes with Al atoms at the centers of alternate ones, so that Al atoms have only Fe as first and second nearest neighbors. Later, Osawa and Murata4 determined the boundaries of the different superlattice regions in the iron-rich Fe-Al solid solution by dilatometric and X-ray methods. Two of the six phases, which they found between 0 and 50 at. pct Al, were never identified by other workers. A. Taylor and R. M. ones,&apos; concurrently with and independently of this research, redetermined this diagram by measuring lattice parameters at temperature. Further reference will be made to their results. EQUILIBRIUM DIAGRAM A) Experimental Procedure—The alloys were prepared from NRC gas-free iron (99.9 pct Fe) and 99.99 pct Al. They were melted in alumina&apos; crucubles under vacuum in an induction furnace. If the ingots were unsound or showed more than a 3 pct weight loss, they were rejected. The ingots were homogenized at 1100°C for 24 hr before hot-rolling at 700" to 900°C from 1 in. to 0.25 in. thick. It is interesting to note that alloys containing more than 28 at. pct Al were able to take an 80 pct reduction of area in the ordered FeAl region. The dilatometer specimens and specimens for chemical analysis were cut from these plates. A Leitz dilatometer was used to measure the coefficient of linear expansion as a function of temperature. The specimens were slowly cooled from 900" to 300°C where they were annealed for 10 hr before slowly cooling to room temperature. The expansion was recorded photographically as the alloys were heated and cooled at 1.5oC per min between 100" and 1000°C. The magnetic measurements determining the Curie points were performed on the dilatometer specimens in the dilatometer, by using direct current in the furnace windings both to heat the specimen at 1.5°C per min and to serve as the primary coil. The regular specimen holder was replaced by a thin alundum tube on which was wound, as a secondary, a closely spaced coil of fine copper wire. A reversal of current in the furnace windings produced, in the secondary, an emf which was proportional to the induction in the specimen, and which could be detected on a galvanometer. In this way, it was possible to determine the Curie points of alloys to within * 5°C. B) Results and Discussion—The coefficients of linear expansion, as obtained from the dilatometer curves, are plotted as a function of temperature and composition in Fig. 1. Since in many cases the heating and cooling curves were superimposed, it was decided to measure slopes of heating curves only. Definite high peaks, due to the transformations, were observed on each curve between 400" and 520°C, and, for alloys containing more than 23 at. pct Al, a second set of smaller peaks at temperatures above 660°C. The sharpness of the peaks indicates that ordering to Fe3Al is a first-order reaction. The compositions and the temperatures of these peaks are listed in Table I. The general energy equation, including change in kinetic energy, was solved by numerical integration and used to evaluate simplifying assumptions and application practices over a wide range of conditions. When extreme conditions were encountered, sizable errors were caused by large integration intervals, application of Simpson&apos;s rule and neglecting change in kinetic energy. A maximum error of only 1.31 percent was caused by assuming temperature and compressibility constants at their average value. It was discovered that a discontinuity can develop in the integral for the injection case. This discontinuity indicates a point of zero pressure change and is an inflection point in the pressure traverse. INTRODUCTION When a pressure in a gas well is to be calculated, one of the first decisions is to select a method of calculation. In many instances, this selection becomes a problem because the literature, at best, provides an evaluation of any method for only a limited range of conditions. Once a method has been selected, a question often arises as to the size of the calculation interval which should be used. The question regarding calculation interval arises because an analytic solution is not obtainable and approximate solutions must be used. This paper presents an evaluation of major assumptions and application practices of probably the two most widely used methods for calculating steady-state single-phase gas well pressures. The two methods are Cullender and Smith1-" (numerical integration), and average temperature and com-pressibility. The Cullender-Smith method assumes that change in kinetic energy is negligible and is normally applied in two steps with a Simpson&apos;s rule correcton. The average temperature and compressibility method, in addition to neglecting kinetic energy change, asumes that temperature and compressibility are constant at their average values. This method is normally applied for wellhead shut-in pressures of less than 2,000 psi, and in one step. Computer programs were written to compute bottom-hole pressure with and without the assumptions, using various approaches. Values of input parameters investigated are shown in Table 1. Flow rate was limited to a maximum of 5,000 and 10,000 Mcf/D for tubing sizes of 1.610 and 1.995 in. ID, respectively. Flow rate was also limited to 10,000 Mcf/D for a tubing size of 2.441 in. ID when wellhead flowing pressure was 100 psia. These limitations were imposed on flow rate so as not to exceed sonic velocity. The z factor routine available necessitated limiting bottom-hole temperature to 240F and wellhead pressure to 3,000 psia. Pressures were compared on the basis of percent deviation from the trapezoidal integration of Eq. l or 2 at 100-ft intervals. A preliminary investigation indicated that a 1,000-ft interval solution would differ from a 50-ft interval solution by less than 0.25 percent; therefore, the 100-ft interval was chosen for a base. It describes a practical method by which the long and relatively accurate Bond closed-circuit grindability can be adapted to a known ore so that results of comparable accuracy can be obtained on the same ore from much shorter batch grinding tests. This can be very useful in control work. In large mills a routine batch grinding test on the head sample can be made each day, or even each shift, to check grinding performance by comparison of the work index from each mill grinding section with that obtained from testing. DREDGING AREAS The gold-bearing formations that traversed the western slope of the Sierra Nevadas for a north and south distance of some 300 miles furnished the immediate source of the gold found in most of the placer deposits of California.. Erosion through a long period carried the gold, together with various forms of partly disintegrated material, to lower elevations and formed placer deposits. Through the classifying action of water in motion, the coarser gold and heavier material of various kinds were deposited relatively near the source; consequently, in&apos; the higher moun-tain country, old river channels were worked feverishly during the early California gold-rush days because of their high gold content. With the working out of these known high-grade channels, and from the knowledge thus obtained of prehistoric stream beds, drift mining was started and flourished until about 1890. Even today many drift mines are operating with the objective of opening other old Tertiary river channels that have been covered by volcanic flows.

Prospecting is certainly the world&apos;s biggest and best gambling business. It is a game where the chips cost many thousands and where many millions, even billions, can be won. An attractive feature of this gamble is the fact that the players are free to rig the odds as favorably as possible. Only the limited bounty of nature, the restrictions of the laws of the land, the competition from other players, the limited sagacity of the player himself— only these, and other factors, restrict the possibilities for large winnings. Today probably about half the land surface of the earth remains to be searched for signs of ore visible at the surface. It is fortunate that so much land still remains for exploration by relatively economical methods. Looking to the future, it is a good guess that the costs of finding ore will increase in response to increasing technical difficulties. To continue to achieve profits from prospecting, it will become necessary to analyze the business more skillfully, in a more and more sophisticated manner. Whenever feasible, qualitative concepts must be replaced by their quantitative equivalents, improvements, and extensions. THE GAMBLE The fact that prospecting is a gambling business reminds us at once of the elementary rule known as the law of gambler&apos;s ruin. I hesitate to mention so simple a rule in this company of experts. This rule expresses the rather serious chance of going broke when the odds for success are small, merely by a normal run of bad luck regardless of the long-run expectations of gain. The only sure way of avoiding this special risk of gambler&apos;s ruin is to have enough capital, and the will, to continue the play many times and thus ride out the inevitable runs of bad luck. For example, if the probability of success is one in ten for each venture, there is a 35 pct chance that ten successive ventures will fail in a row. But if one has the capital to continue the play through a run of 100 failures, then the chance of gambler&apos;s ruin is only 5 in 100,000. Almost any management, I suppose, would be under terrific pressure to cease the play during a long run of bad luck. To continue to prospect under such circumstances requires great confidence in the premises, and a firm conviction in the long-term expectation of profit. There is evidence which I shall mention that in the future even the strongest companies may not have the necessary capital to prospect on the ideal scale. Joint ventures will be very desirable as a means for extending the available venture

Consumption of fluorspar in the United States in the last ten years has doubled to 1.34 million tons. One main, reason for the increase has been the use of the basic oxygen furnace to produce steel which requires considerably more fluorspar than the open hearth. The increasing consumption of aluminum and fluorocarbon chemicals will require more fluorspar, Since 1964 domestic fluorspar prices have advanced over 70%. Maximum prices were attained in 1971 and remain stable. These higher prices have brought about the expansion of production capacity at many of the present mines and mills. Exploration has been intensified, resulting in new discoveries, which are being brought into production. Many deposits, heretofore considered uneconomical, are being reappraised for possible development. Companies who have not previously mined fluorspar are actively seeking and acquiring new properties. The outlook for the continued health of the domestic fluorspar industries is favorable at present prices; however, it is doubtful that production will be greatly increased. New production will have to come from presently inaccessible areas of much greater distance from consuming centers. Prices will have to be higher to support this production. Domestic fluorspar production meets only 20% of domestic consumption. Thus, reliance on imports on fluorspar in the future will become increasingly more critical.
