THE district of Catorce, San Luis Potosi, ranks among the first half-dozen silver-producing camps f Mexico. Mining has been more or less continuous there for 150 years. The large producing mines, Mapum, Mazapil, Palomas, Musquiz, Minas Virjas, now for the most part idle or abandoned, are grouped around the head of two valleys: one, which drains to the west, falls 2000 ft. (609.6 m.) in 4 1/2 mi. (7.2 km.) between the main Catorce and the western foot of the range and is characterized by steep canon walls; the other, east of the main town of Catorce from which it is separated by a high divide, heads in a number of steep tributaries above the basin in which lies the town of Potrero and flows nearly north for 10 mi. (16 km.) to the northern base of the range; below Potrero, it has for the most part gently sloping valley walls and a broad valley floor. The Sierra Catorce is the highest range of the region, the summits reaching altitudes of over 11,000 ft. With the exception of a few cliffs of the erosion escarpment of the lower limestone and the canon walls below the main town of Catorce, which is the highest town in Mexico, the gently rounded slopes are characteristic of a maturely eroded mountain range composed of folded sedimentary rocks. As is usual in desert regions, the heavy-bedded limestones are the most resistant to erosive forces. Folded into anticlines, they form the mountain ranges; and the intermontane valleys and basins, originally carved out of less resistant shales, clays, marls and sandstones, are covered by debris forming a mantle with surface gradually rising upwards toward the hills. In time, the debris buries, in deposits formed from their own ruins, all but the highest summits of the original mountains; some f this region has already nearly reached this stage. Most of the debris is firmly cemented by calcium carbonate (caliche). Solution f the limestone by meteoric waters afforded the supply of lime carbonate, which has been redeposited upon evaporation of the waters as a cement binding the boulders, pebbles, and finer detritus.

This paper presents useful charts for conversion of various viscosimeter units into centipoises and graphically summarizes published investigations of the viscosity of air, water and natural gas at high temperatures and pressures. Where possible, charts and correlations were constructed to cover a range of temperature (60°F. to 300°F.) and pressure (14.7 lb. per sq. in. abs. to 8000 lb. per sq. in. gauge) encountered in oil fields. Correlation charts, for the purpose of predicting crude oil viscosity and solubility behavior at oil field temperatures and pressures, were constructed from an analysis and correlation of 1332 viscosity and solubility observations from 953 crude oil samples taken from 747 oil fields. Of these fields, 501 are in the United States, including 75 in California. Of the 1332 observations, 1215 were viscosity values, including 786 of gas-free crude oil, 351 of oil saturated with gas, and 78 under-saturated with gas at pressures above the bubble point. Results show that crude oil viscosity at various reservoir conditions can be predicted with average deviations varying from 24.2 per cent for gas-free crude oil to as little as 2.7 per cent for undersaturated crude oil "above the bubble point." The solubility of crude oil may be predicted from oil gravity and saturation pressure with an average deviation of 22.0 per cent from observed values. In conclusion, it is shown that the viscosity of a gas and gas-saturated crude oil may be predicted within the accuracy of most reservoir computations. Viscosity is a measure of flow resistance; common units are in centipoises (cp.). The object of this report is to present conversion charts and simplified 'correlation charts showing the viscosity behavior of air, water, gas and crude oil and gas-saturated crude oil under oil field temperatures and pressures, which have been known to be as high as 300°F. and 8000 Ib. per sq. in. gauge under subsurface conditions. The viscosity of a liquid or gas is important because it is a measure of its fluidity, or its ability to flow through pipe lines or oil sands. Viscosity of air has become important because it is being used in secondaryl,2 recovery projects. The viscosity of natural gas and water at reservoir conditions is useful because they are almost universally associated and produced with crude oil. GENERAL GEOLOGIC DESCRIPTION The mineral deposit of this case study can be described as a "typical" porphyry copper deposit of the southwestern USA and northern Mexico mineral province. The copper mineralization is related to Laramide age intrusives of intermediate composition which have been intruded into older, mostly crystalline, host rocks. Post Laramide deformation and faulting have subjected the deposit to erosion, leaching, and enrichment processes, which have created a secondarily enriched chalcocite zone. Later basin and range faulting down dropped the ore zone, resulting in deep burial beneath late Tertiary conglomerates and gravels, thus preserving the deposit from further erosion and oxidation. Lower grade chalcopyrite mineralization constitutes the primary zone underlying the enriched blanket. MANAGEMENT OF SAMPLE DATA Sample data were obtained from exploration diamond drill holes that were collared vertically and drilled with surface rigs. Most of the holes were surveyed downhole and found to deviate significantly from the vertical. The data were keypunched from original drill hole logs to formats as described in Chapter 6. Three types of cards were prepared: 1) A heading card containing the following information: [Project Name Coordi-in_ Hole Collarnates Bear-clina-Total ID Northing Easting Elevinglion Depth] 2) Individual record cards following each heading card with the following information: [SampleMin. Zone Zone Sample Sample Coordinates Sample Assays Leach InterLength Northing Fasting Elev Total Cu Oxide Cu (etc) face] MINERAL BOUNDARY PROBLEM AND TREATMENT According to the geologic description, at least three mineral zones are present within the ore limits, as well as fault boundaries and a buried topographic surface, each of which have to be considered. The interfaces of the various mineralogical and geological boundaries were identified as accurately as possible in each drill hole by the project geologist, the location of the interface was surveyed in the computer program in association with the nearest sample intercept to the interface (note last field of line 3). Thus, the boundary is represented as a point in 3D space at each intersecting drill hole. The linear interpolation (LINTERP) program then searched the last field of the surveyed record to find the top of each mineral zone, or geologic boundary, and read the coordinates associated with that sample point. The program then used the coordinates to compute an interpolated surface between all existing data points as described in Chapter 11. A contour map was plotted for each of the computed surfaces and reviewed by the project geologist. Where the surfaces were poorly defined due to lack of real drill hole information, the geologist, at times, inserted a "pseudo" drill hole intercept according to his best judgment and feeling for the configuration of the surface, and such points were entered into the data stream for LINTERP. Four solvent extraction systems were studied to determine their efficiency jor extraction and separation of tantalum and columbium. Aqueous feed solutions of varying HF-HCl concentrations and metal content were contacted with equal volumes of cyclohexanone, 3-methyl-2-butanone, and 2-pentanone and solutions of varying HF-H2S04 concentrations were contacted with equal volumes of 2-pentanone. One multistage continuous test was made in a polyethylene pulse column using cy clohexanone as the organic phase. In each system studied, columbium and tantalum purities in excess of 95 pct with respect to each other were obtained in single-stage tests at low acidities in the feed solution. Separation factors ranging from 1700 to 2400 were obtained when rising HF-HCl mixtures in the aqueous phase. Best results were obtained when a solution of HF-H2S04 was used as the aqueous phase and 2-pentanone as the organic phase. A separation factor in excess of 6000 was obtained in one stage with aqueous solution concentrations of 2 _N HF and 2N H2S0,. When acid concentrations were increaszd to 52 HF and 10 _N H2S0,, 99.9 pct of the tantalum and 98.2 pct of the columbium initially present in the feed solution were transferred to the organic phase. The separation of columnbium and tantalum obtainable by means of the solvent extraction systems presented in this paper was found to corn -pare favorably with other systems, including the HF-H2SO4-methyl isobutyl ketone system currently used by most producers for the extraction and separation of these metals. TANTALUM and columbium are always found together in minerals of commercial significance, although the proportion of the two metals in ores varies within broad limits. Columbium is estimated to be 13 times more abundant than tantalum. Five methods generally employed for the separat:ion of these metals are: 1) fractional crystallization (the Marignac process),2 2) solvent separation, 3) fractional distillation of their chlorides, 4) ion exchange, and 5) selective reduction. Of these methods, the one currently used by industry to the greatest extent is that of solvent separation. One of the early technical developments in solvent separation of tantalum from columbium was reported by the Bureau of Mines: the HF-HC1-methyl isobutyl ketone system; data were presented for both laboratory and pilot-plant experimentation.3 Of twenty-eight organic solvents tested for their ability to extract tantalum from an HF-HC1 solution of columbium and tantalum, 3-pentanone (diethyl ke-tone), cyclohexanone, 2-pentanone, and 3-methyl-2-butanone were chosen for further study. Data on the HF-HC1-diethyl ketone system has been published4 and data describing the use of cy clohexanone, 2-pentanone, and 3-methyl-2-butanone as the organic phase are included in this report. RAW MATERIAL The source of tantalum and columbium oxides for this study was ('Geomines" tin slag from the Manono Smelter, Cie Geomines, Gelges, S.A., Congo. In order to extract the valuable Ta-Cb content, the slags were carbided, chlorinated, and the sublimate from chlo-rination was hydrolized and washed free of chloride with water. The washed material was air-dried and stored in a stoppered container. Throughout the paper, "feed material" refers to this mixture of hydrated oxides which was employed because of its high solubility in aqueous solutions. Typical analysis of the hydrated oxides is shown in Table I. I) HF-HC1-CYCLOHEXANONE SYSTEM Batch Separation. Effect of Acid Concentration. To determine the effect of varying the acid concentration upon the transfer of tantalum and columbium, a series of tests was made in which approximately 2.5 g of feed material was added to 25 ml solutions of 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 N HF and 0 through 5 N HC1. Tantalum pentoxide concentration of the solu%ons was approximately 21 g per liter and columbium pentoxide was 14 g per liter. These starting solutions were shaken with equal volumes of cyclohexanone in 100 ml polyethylene bottles for 30 min. The phases were carefully separated in 125 ml glass separatory funnels. The time of contact of the solutions with the separatory funnels was kept at a minimum to reduce silica contamination. The measured phases were separated into 400 ml polyethylene beakers and the metal contents of each were precipitated by addition of an excess of ammonium hydroxide. Precipitate from each phase was filtered on ashless filter paper, ignited at 800" to 1000°C for 45 min, weighed, and analyzed by X-ray fluorescence.5 Data tabulated in Table I1 and illustrated in Fig. 1, show that maximum separation of tantalum from columbium for each HF concentration was obtained with no HCl present. During the last few years, one of the great problems in the milling of all ores has been that of grinding. This subject involves not merely the cost of the operation, but also the selection of the proper degree and character of grinding to yield the best metallurgical results on the given ore. Considering the diversity of machinery, one is led to wonder at the variety of grinding methods employed, even when realizing that metallurgy demands varying products. In an attempt to investigate the relative grinding resistances of a number of ores now being milled in this country and Alaska, the manage-mxitofthe Portland mills requested Samples of average mill-run of ore from various companies. The request met with a ready response, indicating the desire of all operators to gain information on the subject. The difficulties involved in this investigation were numerous, lack of time for outside problems during this strenuous period being a serious one. Also, we were unable, in the time, to obtain a correct 150-mesh screen; in the screen analyses tabulated and plotted herewith, the 150-mesh screen was used merely to protect the 200-mesh screen, not to ascertain points on the curves. The experimental grinder was a small iron tube-mill, 8 by 121/2 in., in which was placed a definite number (74) and weight (3450 gm.) of 3/4-in. steel balls, 1 Ib. water and 1 Ib. ore. To obtain uniform conditions, each ore was first crushed and screened, and from the sized products a "standard feed" was artificially prepared, the same standard being adopted for all tests in that particular series. INTRODUCTION The principal objective of this chapter is to provide guidance in understanding and making effective use of published financial statements of mining companies. Although financial statements only represent a gathering together of information relevant to an enterprise's financial position and results of operations, they increasingly reflect the complexities of the modern day business environment. In the mining industry, a wide variety of accounting practices have evolved to deal with the unique aspects of the business in the absence of authoritative accounting pronouncements from standard-setting bodies. Given such complexities and divergent practices, financial statements of mining companies are not easily understood and cannot be used effectively as a tool in decision-making without a basic knowledge of fundamental accounting concepts, generally accepted accounting principles and their application in the mining industry. As such, this chapter is not restricted to a discussion of the accounting for the unique aspects of the mining industry. These aspects are dealt with at length but the text also includes a discussion of general accounting concepts and practices which have wide application in the mining industry. Frequent references are made in the text to international practices and to specific rules and requirements of individual countries. In this respect, the scope is restricted to four major mining environments, Canada, the UK, the US and Australia, all of which have made significant contributions to the development of generally accepted accounting principles. FINANCIAL STATEMENTS - ELEMENTS AND CONCEPTS Financial statements were originally a stewardship report to owners to satisfy them that management had given a proper account of the resources with which it had been entrusted. Today, the number of users of financial statements has expanded to include the following groups: - shareholders, present and prospective; - lenders, present and prospective; - financial analysts; - regulatory authorities; - taxing authorities; - labour unions and employees; and - creditors and customers. The expectations of these user groups differ. For example, investors and lenders require information that will indicate the adequacy of their security and the profitability of the enterprise; taxing authorities will be concerned with the concept of income; labour unions and employees will focus on the profitability of the enterprise. Ground Rules for Preparing Financial Statements Responsibility for Financial Statements Financial statements are the representations of management. This may strike the reader as a rather obvious statement. It is important to remember, however, the role of judgment in accounting. Notwithstanding the promulgation of accounting standards in the developed countries, considerable flexibility remains in the selection of accounting practices and methods and in their presentation. Arguably, there is more flexibility in the mining industry as few countries have developed standards to deal with its unique aspects. Accordingly, financial statements are as much a product of management's perspective and philosophy as they are a compliance document.

Metallurgists have long recognized that the Fe3C type of carbide is not a stable phase in steel and that, given sufficient time, it will decompose with formation of graphite, at least at temperatures below about 205o°F.l This slow graphitization has never been of much concern to users of hypoeutectoid steels, for in such steels it occurs only during prolonged exposure at elevated temperature. In I935, Kinzel and Moore2 reported complete graphitization of the carbide of a 0. I5 per cent carbon steel that had been in service for about 26,000 hr. at a temperature of about IIOO° to 12oo°F. In discussing this paper, both Mathews and Sauveur reported graphitization of slightly hypereutectoid steels. In an extensive investigation of graphitization of high-purity iron-carbon alloys, Wells1 produced graphite at 7oo°C. (I29o°F.) in an alloy containing as little as 0.13 per cent carbon, and showed that graphite may precipitate either directly from austenite or from decomposition of Fe3C, also that the rate of graphitization tends to increase with increase of temperature, at least up to a certain point, and with the presence of graphite nuclei. Jenkins, Mellor and Jenkinson,3 studying the structural changes in carbon steels ranging from 0.17 to 1.14 per cent carbon during stress-rupture tests at elevated temperature, observed graphite in an aluminum-killed 0.40 per cent carbon steel after fracture in 4340 hr. under a stress of 17,900 lb. per sq. in. at 840°F. and in many of the steels after stress-rupture test at 12oo°F. Unstressed samples of 0.60, 0.86 and I.I4 per cent carbon steels graphitized almost completely in 360 hr. at I200°F., while samples of 0.90 and 1.10 per cent carbon steels were somewhat graphitized, and steels containing 0.24, 0.40 and 0.57 per cent carbon showed no sign of graphite. Their results indicate that graphite precipitates the more readily the higher the carbon content, though this tendency is influenced to some extent by deoxidation practice, and that graphitization is accelerated by plastic deformation. In a recent study of the graphitization of 0.4 and 0.6 per cent carbon steel strip, made by M. A. Hughes,4 it was found that at I2oo°F. graphite appeared after 72 hr. in aluminum-killed but not in silicon-killed steel, and that the rate of graphitization was increased by slow cooling from I6oo°F. and by cold-working prior to annealing. In creep tests of normalized 0.15 per cent carbon steel killed with 2.5 Ib. of aluminum per ton, at the U. S. Steel Corporation laboratory at Kearny, spheroidization and some graphitization were found after 3000 hr. at Iooo°F. under a stress as low as 1500 lb. per sq. inch. .

The Hidden Dome gas field, situated in Washakie County, Wyoming, was discovered Sept. 26, 1917. Subsequently five additional gas wells were completed and a large reserve was developed. For a number of years this field completely supplied the domestic market at Basin and Greybull, as well as the refinery at the latter town, and it is still supplying gas in small amounts to this market. Production is obtained from the sands of the Frontier formation at depths ranging from 1000 to 1500 ft. The original rock pressure was 725 Ib. and initial production ranged from 4,000,000 to 28,000,000 cu. ft. per day per well. Porosity of the sand, determined from the size of the productive area and the amount of gas recovered, is over 18 per cent. Area and Management It is estimated that the productive area is about 640 acres. Its outline is indicated on Fig. 5, on which are also shown the locations of holes drilled on the structure and the area of unit operation. The unit area is owned by the Ohio Oil Co. and development and operation have been by this company. No productive well has been completed outside this area. The entire area was Government land filed on under the placer mining law. Results of Unit Operation With six producing wells, or an average of one to each 160 acres, the pool is completely developed. Location of the wells was made with respect to structural conditions plus the requirement that at least one well be drilled on each 160-acre placer claim. Perhaps a somewhat more uniform spacing of the wells might have been accomplished and one well eliminated, but it must be borne in mind that the holes, on account of their shallow depth, were not expensive and that the object was to develop as reliable a reserve as possible. There is no cause to suspect that these holes have not adequately drained the reservoir and there is every reason to think that any additional wells, which might have been drilled under diversified ownership and operation, would have been an economic waste. THE most important event in the history of mining in the United States was the discovery of gold in California, which led to the rapid development, not only of a new industry, but of a new empire. The settlement of the Pacific slope was making but slow progress under the inducements of a scanty commerce in furs and hides. The liberal grants offered by the government to agricultural pioneers in Oregon had attracted to the Willamette valley and other favored points in that territory a limited population; but the government of the Mexicans in California was positively unfavorable to enterprise. It is true that gold was known to exist in the country. Rumors of it were current among the trappers, and placers had actually been worked in what is now Los Angeles County ; but the padres of the neighboring mission of San Fernando had discouraged the business as demoralizing to their flocks ; and the existence of the precious metal was not widely known; still less was its distribution north¬ward suspected. The discovery of gold, January 19th, 1848, at Sutter's saw-mill, on the south fork of the American River, afterward famous as Coloma, in Eldorado County, was the beginning of the new epoch. This discovery was made by James Wilson Marshall, a partner in the mill, who observed in the debris washed down by the tail-race a glittering fragment of a mineral unknown to him. SINGLE slip and a single parallel array of edge dislocations have been obtained in silicon single crystals by homogeneously bending them in a four-point dead-loading device at 1000°C around the [211] axis with [253.] as the tensile axis which encloses an angle of 40° with the glide plane. Other orientations or lower temperatures proved unsuitable. The homogeneity of the bending was checked by the method shown in Fig. 1. The chemically polished specimen was exposed to parallel light from a microscope-stage lamp. The sharpness of the focus of the reflected light is an approximate measure of the circularity of the sample. This method permitted the determination of the actual radius of bent specimens within 10 pct accuracy. The etching solution developed to show up dislocations consisted of the following volume parts: 2 HF, 1 HNO,, 2 CH,COOH, 1 a solution of 5 wt pct of CuNO, in water (Rosi'). The acetic-acid content was adjusted to produce fine well-defined etch-pits in about 2 min at room temperature. The effectiveness of the etch did not depend on the crystal-lographic orientation of the face etched. The number of etch pits produced after a given deformation was checked in the usual way against the Cahn formula' and showed good agreement. As it is to be expected from the orientation of the primary system there are slip steps on the top and bottom faces but not on the side faces (perpendicular to the bending axis), whereas etch pits appear on the side faces but not on the top and bottom faces. This is different only for occasional dislocations of a secondary glide system. All the micrographs included have been taken in places where the most of secondary glide could be seen. From this it is evident that in the homegeneously deformed region the number of secondary dislocations was less than 1 in 1000 of the primary type. Dislocation Distribution—A series of tests with varying amounts of deformation is shown in Figs. 2(a-c). An observation that can readily be made from these pictures is that the linear density of dislocations within slip lines is relatively constant and independent of the amount of deformation. "Slip line" in this context is understood to mean a line that is a straight connection of individual etch pits. The heavily pitted bands which can be seen in each of these three pictures may be resolved fairly definitely, at higher magnifications, into many "slip lines" the distance between them being of the order of 0.5p The distance between dislocations in slip lines is of the order of 2p and it is also fairly constant in going from the neutral zone outward. The higher over-all dislocation density in the outer regions of any sample and the higher total number in a more heavily deformed sample, are effected by a larger number of "slip lines." The relative constancy of the dislocation distance within an individual slip line is surprising. The absence of pile-ups" may imply, if there is no rear- rangement on unloading," that there are no substantial obstacles to slip in this case. In order to test this assumption it is necessary to have dependable operating data as well as an exact knowledge of the equilibrium state. Considerable progress has already been made in the study of slag-metal equilibria, notably in the earlier work of Hertyl and of Oberhoffer and Schenck2 and in the more recent researches of Krings and Schack-mann3 and of Koerber and Oelsen.4 None of these investigators, however, have employed basic slags comparable to those encountered in basic open-hearth practice, so that up to the present time our only information regarding the equilibria of these slags is based upon observations drawn from steelmaking practice in which there is little assurance that actual equilibrium was attained. The original plan of this investigation was to secure simultaneous slag and metal samples at intervals during the making of an open-hearth heat, recording the heat history in detail and obtaining complete allalyses of slag and metal, then to bring these slag samples into equilibrium with liquid iron in the laboratory induction furnace and thus to determine directly whether or not the observed relationships in the open hearth represent conditions approaching equilibrium. This plan was only partly successful. While slags were obtained from the open hearth under satisfactorily recorded conditions and these were re-melted in the laboratory under equilibrium conditions, changes in slag composition, which accompanied the remelting operation, were so great that the final slag from the induction furnace bore little resemblance to its open-hearth parent and the direct comparison was therefore abnndoned. The results, however, lie within a range of slag composition that is of interest in the making of low-carbon steel. As far as we are aware, they represent the first published laboratory study of equilibria involving slags that contain all the con stituents of basic open-hearth slag. Feasibility studies for mining projects traditionally involve in their final stages a lengthy process of repetitive trial and error discounting, in calculating the discounted cash flow rate of return resulting from the respective yearly after-tax cash flows. Also, probability analysis and sensitivity analysis (in particular) require extensive additional calculations with each change of any project parameter . These inefficient repetitive procedures have two unacceptable results: 1. they are not flexible enough to allow ready analysis of dependent parameters , and 2. they require resort to high-capacity centralised computing facilities with their inherent impersonality, rather than a convenient and available desk calculator - a factor of particular importance to top mining management. Such problems can be overcome if the mining project can be represented by a reasonable straightforward mathematical economic model. The most flexible and appropriate model has been found to be one in which a maximum and minimum value for each of n parameters are supplied to a program which determines a large number of systematic combinations of parameter events and then statistically analyses them to determine the resulting coefficients of the model. In this paper the authors discuss the selection of the most appropriate type of model and outline the steps followed in its development and application.

The most important event in the history of mining in the United States was the discovery of gold in California, which led to the rapid development, not only of a new industry, but of a new empire. The settlement of the Pacific slope was making but slow progress under the inducements of a scanty commerce in furs and hides. The liberal grants offered by the government to agricultural pioneers in Oregon had attracted to the Willamette valley and other favored points in that territory a limited population; hot the government of the Mexicans in California was positively unfavorable to enterprise. The maintenance of the common gold standard is the most important cooperative undertaking in the world. The war broke up this relationship and brought about a state of great disorder in the currencies and exchanges. After the war the countries all began to grope their way back to the gold standard as the best means of establishing trade and financial relations with each other. With this movement began a general decline in commodity prices. The question has been raised whether the world's return to the gold standard was not forcing prices back to the prewar level. Also, the question is raised whether the world has not outgrown the supply of gold as the basis of credit. Because Europe readjusted its monetary units to conform to the higher level of prices there is no pressure on prices on this account. Furthermore, a large amount of gold formerly in hand-to-hand circulation passed out of circulation and has been added to the central bank reserves. The gold reserves of 36 countries increased approximately 100 per cent from the outbreak of the war to June 30,1930. The increase is much larger than the average increase of prices in any of the important countries, at any time since 192.5. As gold in the central banks of issue is far more effective for all business purposes than gold in circulation, the gold scarcity argument has little basis as applied to this time. The abnormal distribution due to the war was to the disadvantage of business everywhere. Credit was scarcer and dearer in some countries. The inflation in this country might have been greater had the production of gold been greater. The argument supporting the theory of a scarcity of gold assumes as fundamental that general price changes must be accounted for by changes in the price equation on the side of money. This is disproved in every period of business depression. A downward price movement is characteristic of every period of business recession. Important discoveries of gold must be made even to maintain present gold production, in the face of which the world's business is bound to continue increasing. THE mineral production of Dutch Guiana has been of little consequence. This is due to several rea-sons. Inaccessibility is probably the greatest factor, for the Guianas are off the main commercial route. More or less closely related causes are the tropi-cal climate and the temperament of the inhabitants. Small quantities of gold have come from Dutch Guiana for many years, and recently bauxite has entered the list of exports. It is likely that other minerals may be found in commercial quantities. The Colony is on the northeast coast of South Amer-ica. It is known by two names, that of Dutch Guiana, and that of Surinam. - British Guiana (Demerara) adjoins it on the west, French Guiana (Cayenne) on the east, and Brazil on the south. It covers an area of approximately 58,000 sq. miles. The population, in the. neighborhood of a hundred thousand,, is small, but the variety of races and the sub-sequent mixtures of these is almost incredible. This unusual and colorful population readily falls into three groups, (1) those of the bush, (2) those of the planta-tion, and (3) those of the towns. The bush people con-sist of two groups, the Indians and the bush-negro. The Indians, of whom there are but a little over two thousand, keep entirely to themselves, lead a. very primi-tive existence, and rarely come into the towns. The bush-negro gives the touch of human life to the thick jungles. A descendant of escaped slaves of by-gone days, he is at present a proud, stalwart, happy, clean, moral, carefree and ease-loving individual-a distinct personality. Work is not his pal, although he does cheerfully that which is necessary for his existence. He will transport passengers and goods in his dugout and guide the stranger through the jungles, but that is all. The plantations employ some negroes, but more Javanese, imported as contract labor from the East Indies. Paramaribo, the only large town in Dutch Guiana, is the center of all government, commercial, and social activities. It has a motley population of 40,000, in-cluding negroes native to Dutch Guiana and many from all parts of the West Indies. In addition, there are Javanese, Chinese, and some Hindus. The two latter groups control most of the retail trade. The Dutch and a few scattered Germans are the only Europeans. All of the higher government offices are held by the Dutch, the others are filled from the ranks of the natives. Marriages and intermarriages among these various groups have produced types that defy almost any effort to decipher an individual's forbears. Dutch is the official language, but among the people a jargon known as Tahki-Tahki holds sway. English is taught in the schools, consequently many speak it, and many more can make themselves understood in that language.

IT just so happens that we do our best thinking while painting wood- work and last Saturday while finishing up the screens (the bugs come late where we live) the paint very nearly ran out. By adding turpentine, it just stretched. It was pretty thin for the job though, which made us think that that is just about what the situation is going to be in the mining industry if something isn't done to increase the number of enrollments in engineering curricula. Engineers are going to be spread too thin for the job at hand.
