THE martensitic transformation in the ß-phase of the Cu-Zn system has been the subject of several investigations. The transformation is known to be reversible and to be affected by stress. Its temperature range has been determined as a function of composition. In the investigation reported here, the effect of tensile stresses on the transformation was investigated quantitatively. Some information was also obtained on the thermoelastic behavior of the martensite formed in the first stages of the transformation. Most of the experiments were done with alloy E of an earlier investigation;' this alloy analyzed 60.49 pct Cu and 39.51 pet Zn by weight. The methods of shaping and heat treatment were also essentially the same as those previously used. The stress was applied to the specimen immersed in a cooling liquid. The transformation was followed by measuring the electrical resistance with a Kelvin bridge and the elongation with a cathetometer. Fig. 1 shows the M, temperature as a function of stress. Resistance and strain measurements gave essentially identical values. The results suggest a roughly linear relation between M. and in the range investigated, up to 12 kg s mm". At higher stresses, plastic deformation begins to interfere seriously with this relationship. The increase of M, with stress is consistent with published work on the effect of stress on the martensitic transformation. The slope of the curve, 4°C per kg mm ", is of the same order of magnitude as the corresponding value calculated for steel.' Fig. 1 also shows the difference, AM, between the temperature of 50 pct transformation on cooling, as measured by changes in length, and that of 50 pct reverse transformation on heating. This difference, which may be considered a measure of the hysteresis, increases with stress; the decrease at highest stresses is probably associated with plastic deformation. Preliminary work using only resistance measurements was done with an alloy containing 60.15 pct Cu and 39.79 pct Zn by weight. The results indicated higher values o-F M, in agreement with the known variation of M. with composition.' The effect of stress on M, (2°C per kg mm-') was of the same order of magnitude as that shown in Fig. 1 for composition E. An increase in hysteresis with stress was also found. The following experiment was made in order to investigate a partially transformed structure. A specimen of alloy E was cooled to — 85°C under a stress of 4.7 kg mm-'. Under these conditions, the martensitic transformation started but did not go to completion. The stress was then released and the specimen cooled to — 105°C. Fig. 2 shows the measured elongation c. The first change in the slope of the curve indicates the beginning of the transformation under stress. Removing the load at —85°C caused a decrease in length to the value corresponding to the elastic elongation of the parent phase resulting from the applied stress. Hence, the marten-site formed in the first part of the experiment apparently disappears completely and without hysteresis upon the release of the stress. The increase in length on further cooling indicates renewed formation of martensite. These conclusions are consistent with the concept of "thermoelastic" martensite," which has been confirmed by test." Acknowledgments The authors are greatly indebted to Professor M. INTRODUCTION It is sometimes said that "mines are made, and not found." I rather doubt that the exploration geologist would be overly sympathetic to that statement, and, of course, like most one-liners it is only partly true. Access to different financial markets are important at the mineral prospect stage. The modern mine financier has a much more complex, and interesting, job than the financiers of an earlier era, for example, the Canadian financiers of the 40's and 50's who had one simple set of options; i.e. float a company, promote it, and sell an equity stock issue, and then promote it some more. QUALITIES OF A FINANCIER Because technical people are seldom taught financing in their basic training, and because they are usually not involved in it until at quite a senior level in their careers, the whole field often acquires a certain mystique. The engineering professions have too often believed financing is the province of the accountant or financial executive and just as we in the technical world are often too quick to bristle if the latter try to tread on our domain, the opposite can just as easily be true. Unfortunately, this is another example of a compartmentalized individual, and that is one thing the successful financier cannot be. However, to be a successful financier one does not need extensive training or experience in accounting or finance. In fact it can sometimes be a disadvantage to get too buried in working only from the standpoint of discounted cash-flow analyses, ROI's, etc. It must be stressed, however, that one had better know how these analyses are made, and be knowledgeable in understanding a balance sheet, and have a good understanding of financial terminology. The difference between a simple project-type debt financing with a commercial bank and a more inventive and creative financial package comes from an intuition and an experience relating to risk-reward factors. The most important element is "common-sense", based on knowledge and experience. The goal is structure a financial package that fits the project, and in so doing it is important to recognize that it must fit within the limitations of the group supplying the money. I find insensitivity to recognize these constraints the most common mistake made in the field. Put yourself in the other person's place and understand his sources of funds and financing limitations. The engineer has an advantage in financing, as he or she has (or should have) a better idea than anyone of the value of the product, be it the mine, prospect, or company i.e. the intangible or potential worth which cannot be put on a pro-forma. He also knows, or should know, the risks involved. Two projects might look the same on paper, but a good financier must have a sense of when to take whatever deal he can get, and when to hold out based on his evaluation of future developments. It is essential to have a good sense of commodity values and trends, trends affecting the general economy (money supply, interest rates, effects of energy costs, etc.), and political considerations. He must also have a good understanding of the science and art of taxation as deals can often be financed using the government as a silent and unwitting partner by proper use of the tax laws. WHEN TO SEEK FINANCE The first critical decision to make in financing a mineral prospect is "when". At the exploration level, when it is only a dream in the geologist's eye, the alternatives are more limited than when it is a fully-engineered project. The "when" decision depends on how much in internal funds the company has to play with, and how desirable it is to invite financial participation to spread the risk. Assuming that decision is not taken out of lack of money, no one can categorically say when to do it. There is

This general subject has been so thoroughly discussed by Dr. Herty and his associates, especially with regard to the degree of oxidation of the metal at the time that the silicon pig or spiegel is added, that I am not going to spend much time on that today. I should like to propound a question, which is based on my own observations made some years ago while with a large alloy-steel company which had two open-hearth furnace plants. It is true that one of these plants was not engaged particularly in making alloy steels, but there were certain relations between slag and metal composition which appeared to me to be entirely different in the two plants. I have an explanation for it that is more or less incomplete, but possibly Dr. Herty or Mr. Reinartz or some of the others may be able to complete it. Suppose we take our three layers; the metal on the bottom, on top of that the slag, and on top of the slag, the gas. We cannot overlook the gaseous phase. Regardless of the effect of the iron oxide in the slag on the rate of carbon elimination—and that, of course, is rather important in alloy practice since it is not desirable to have the carbon dropping too rapidly at the time the deoxidizing is had in the furnace—it will probably be admitted that it depends on the iron oxide in the metal for a given carbon oxide. I have seen cases where with approximately identical metal and slag compositions one furnace would work twice as rapidly as another in removing carbon. Of course, there is some explanation of this in what others have already said, that the question of the exact lime and silica content of the slag determines the activity and viscosity of the slag; but I am convinced, without having reviewed the actual records since I was asked to make this talk, because they were not available at the time, that the slags in these two furnaces were not materially different. In my last report on Petroleum in Burma and India1, details were given of production and development up to 1932. It was pointed nut, that the only statements available for Burma were those published officially by' the Government of India in the Annual Review of the Mineral Production of India (Records of the Geological Survey of India), which are issued about 10 or 11 months after the close of the year. Operations in Burma are almost entirely in the hands of three companies—the Burmah Oil Co., the British Burmah Petroleum Co. (with its subsidiary, the Rangoon Oil Co.) and the Indo-Burma Petroleum Co.—and these companies preserve a policy of secrecy, so that details are not available of new wells, depth, wells abandoned, or of other figures, except in so far as the Government considers it advisable to publish the information in its possession. GeneRal Developments in 1933-1934 As predicted in 1933, there have been no spectacular developments and no new fields have been discovered. Nor are there any new indications of a likelihood of fresh discoveries. The policy of extremely careful exploitation. has been continued and intensified; production is being maintained at an almost steady level and can be so maintained for many years to come—indeed, it is the policy of the leading company to permit refinery and local market requirements to dictate the production required. Contrary to experience in practically every other part of the world, India has shown a slightly decreased demand for petroleum products—especially kerosene, but also for gasoline. The increased use of electricity would explain the lower demand for kerosene, but the falling off in the demand for gasolinc can only be attributed, according to the Chairman of the Burmah Oil Co., to the depression and to the incidence of heavy taxation. In India (including Burma) as a whole, production was 305,018,751 Imperial gallons in 1931 (8,714,822 U. S. barrels); 308,606,031 Imp. gal. in 1932; 306,009,022 in 1933 and is estimated at 308,000,000 in 1934.

Demerara Bauxite Co. in British Guiana has come a long way in tackling the problem of stripping and removing overburden. When the company started mining in 1917, overburden was hand-loaded into carts pulled by donkeys. Since then it has been recognized that overburden removal is one of the greatest problems. Over the past years a great quantity of equipment has been purchased, discarded as it became obsolete, and replaced with better and cheaper tools. The policy has kept the company's overburden removal costs within reason. Accurate records of costs per cubic yard and cubic yards per hour per unit have been kept for many kinds of equipment. Walking draglines and hydraulicking equipment are the key approaches to the current operation, but shovels, tractor-drawn wagons, self-propelled rubber tired scrapers, and tractor-scrapers still have limited applications. Mackenzie, operational headquarters of the Demerara Bauxite Co. Ltd., is on the Demerara River, 65 miles from Georgetown, British Guiana. Ore treatment and ship loading facilities are at Mackenzie, head of navigation for ocean-going vessels and the mines are located 7 to 40 miles farther upstream.

INTRODUCTION In recent years there has been increased social awareness and government attention directed toward the mining industry. The growing influence of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has resulted in volumes of regulations governing a multitude of health and safety aspects of mining and milling. These regulations naturally have had an impact on new plant design and in some cases have necessitated retrofitting of existing plants. This paper will not examine the regulations governing the industry, since they are a matter of public record, but rather will address two specific health considerations, dust and noise, and their influence on the design of crushing and screening plants. DUST AND NOISE CONCEPTS Dust is generally defined as finely divided solids which may become airborne without any physical or chemical change except fracture. Since the purpose of comminution circuits is to reduce the size of solids by fracture, a percentage of the material is normally reduced in size to a point where it can easily become airborne. The major cause of dust becoming airborne is the air induced by falling material. When granular material falls through a distance, the induced (or entrapped) air rushes out available openings, carrying with it the fine particles that have become suspended. For this reason, the major points of dust generation are the points where the material is falling: chutes, transfer points, screens and equipment feed and discharge points. The expected dust concentration in an area is a function of the degree of size reduction (i.e., finer particles are more readily carried by air currents than heavier particles) and the volume of air that is induced. Manganese-ores are known to exist in the Caucasus in a number of localities, viz., in the government of Kutais, near the village of Chiaturi; in the same goverilment near the Choruk river, southward from Batum; and in the governments of Erivan and Tiflis. In smaller quantities they are found in various other places also. The first-mentioned deposits are by far the most important; the others being not only less extensive, but remote from present means of communication, and, from their character, expensive to work, although in some cases the ore is of a superior quality. All the manganese-ore now known in the market as a Caucasian " ore comes from Chiaturi, no other deposits in the Caucasus having been worked commercially; movements have been made, however, towards the exploitat,ion of some of those on the Choruk river. The Manganese-Ore District of Chiaturi. General Remarks, Statistics, Etc.—No other known deposit of manganese-ore can approach that of Chiaturi in capacity for producing large quantities of high-grade ore at a low cost. The deposit is said to have been discovered in 1848, by the geologist Abich, but the first shipments were not made until 1879, when 871 tons* were produced. Since that time, the production has steadily increased, until now the world relies on this deposit for about one-half its supply of manganese-ore. The industry is also of great importance locally, and aftords a livelihood to a considerable proportion of the population of the district in which the deposit is situated.

This test is based upon the fact that metallic copper will precipitate gold and silver upoil its surface from acid solutions. Of course, the fact is not new, but its application is probably so. I have used the method with success; it recommends itself by the rapidity and ease with which it may be carried on. An auriferous cyanide solution, if made acid with sulphuric acid and boiled with finely divided, pulverulent, metallic copper, will, within a short time, deposit its gold-content on the copper. Any silver in the solution is also precipitated. If this mixture is now filtered, the filter and contents may at once be subjected to a crucible assay treatment, and its lead buttons cupelled and determined. If, instead of taking cement-copper, or any metallic copperpowder, a solution of bluestone is used after acidification, and a few small pieces of sheet aluminum are added, and the solution boiled until all the copper has come down, the result as to the precipitation of gold and silver is the same. THE structural relations existing between cuprous oxide and copper were first systematically studied by Heyn1, who suggested that a study of the microstructure of refined copper might be substituted for the analytical methods in vogue for determining the oxygen content of copper coming .;from the refining furnace. Hofman, Green and Yerxa,2 in their paper A Laboratory Study of the Stages in the Refining of Copper, working along the lines suggested by Heyn, showed that a study off the microstructure could be made to yield a correct estimate of the oxygen content of the specimen of refined copper under examination. In order to determine the oxygen content of the specimen of refined copper under examination a photomicrograph was first made. From the relative areas of copper and eutectic, the percentage of cuprous oxide and the corresponding percentage of oxygen were then readily calculated. It was found that the values for oxygen thus obtained corresponded closely with the analytical results. With the idea of utilizing, this method of determining the oxygen content of each charge dipped from the refining furnaces at the Boston & Montana Reduction Plant, the physical testing laboratory was equipped with suitable apparatus for carrying out the work. It may be of interest to describe certain of the methods which have been worked out in, this connection and give such data as have been obtained bearing on the effect of the oxygen content of refined copper upon its conductivity.

The invention of the Bessemer converter process in 1856 added great impetus to the manufacture of steel and is one of the outstanding contributions to process metallurgy. Although the process of refining pig iron by passing air through the molten metal bears the name of Henry Bessemer, it should be mentioned in passing that William Kelley of Eddysville, Ky., worked on the process as early as 1847. Kelley was granted a patent on the process in 1857, inasmuch as he was able to prove priority in discovery.' After considerable litigation in 1865 the respective interests of Kelley and Bessemer were combined. On Sept. 10, 1856, Robert Mushet of England obtained his first patent on the application of manganese to cast steel. Mushet anticipated trouble in purifying iron by passing currents of air through it: His patent specified that steel made in this way often contained flaws and was red short or cold short. Mushet understood the refining of pig iron into steel well enough to realize the difficulties likely to be cncountered from oxidation of the iron. Mushet was not only an inventor; he was also an investigator. He understood the principle of selective oxidation which takes place in the converter process, and he realized therefore that the remedy for over-oxidation was attainable if a suitable metal could be found at a reasonable cost and in sufficient quantities. His first experiments were made in small crucibles holding a few ounces of metal. Later his work was conducted on a larger scale and with complete success. ON Aug. 10, 1884, the Retsof Mining Co. began the sinking of an 18 by 12-ft. shaft at Retsof, N. Y. Rock salt was reached in 1885, in September, at 1008 ft. below the surface. The first salt was shipped in the fall of 1885. A timber breaker was built in 1886. In July, 1895, there was a consolidation of the Retsof Mining Co., the Greigsville Salt & Mining Co., the Livonia Salt Co., and the Lehigh Salt & Mining Co. These consolidated salt companies are now known as the Retsof Mining Co., a subsidiary of the International Salt Co. Eventually all of the mines were closed except the mine of the Retsof Mining Co., at Retsof, Livingston County, New York. On July 6, 1921, about ½ mile south of the original shaft and plant of the Retsof Mining Co., a new 9 by 28-ft. concrete-lined shaft was started. The shaft is 1063 ft. deep from the top of the shaft collar to the bottom of the salt bed. At the same time a reinforced-concrete breaker and other buildings were erected. This new plant began opera-tions on Dec. 15, 1923. It was designed for a capacity of 3000 tons in 8 hours.

Front Range, Colorado: The majority of the rocks comprising the Front Range of Colorado are pre-Cambrian schists, gneisses, and intrusives which have been elevated to form part of the Southern Rocky Mountain physiographic province. The region is noted mainly for its production of gold and silver, but ores of tungsten, fluorspar, uranium, copper, and iron have been worked. Geological literature1-' describes pitchblende and other radioactive minerals occurring at Jamestown, Boulder County; Central City, Gilpin County; and Lawson, Clear Creek County (fig. 1). As far as the writer is aware, uranium has been found only in the portion northeast of Lawson. Silver Deposits at Caribou Hill: The historic silver deposits of Caribou Hill, located approximately half way between Jamestown and Central City, and 35 miles in a straight line northwest of Denver, appeared particularly intriguing as an area to prospect for uranium for the following reasons: here exists an isolated group of high-grade silver veins in the center of a mining district containing occurrences of uranium, and, in two of the well-known uranium deposits of the world, those at Great Bear Lake, Canada, and Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, uranium is associated with silver in similar fissure veins. An exploration program, conducted in the spring of 1945, directed special attention to Caribou Hill and was rewarded with the discovery of heavy, canary-yellow stained specimens of'pitchblende. The veins are confined to shear zones cutting a north-south, elongated quartz-monzonite stock of Tertiary (?) age lying in the axis of a major anticline of the Idaho Springs biotite schist, the oldest pre-Cambrian formation in the district. The stock is one and three-quarter miles long by more than a mile wide, and Caribou Hill is approximately at its center. The ore zones vary in width from a few inches to 15 ft, and one structure has been traced for a length of over 4000 ft. The ore minerals are galena, sphalerite, ruby silver, native silver, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and pitchblende. They occur most common-

The mechanical properties of Ti-C and Ti-C-0 alloys can be altered by heat treatments to dissolve or reject carbon from solid solutions. The maximum strength is obtained by annealing just below the peritectoid temperature. Quenching from the ß-carbide field results in softening. Impact behavior is influenced by the extent of solution of interstitials CARBON is not as important in titanium alloys as it was in earlier years when graphite induction melting was more prevalent. With induction melting, carbon pickup is about 0.5 to 0.8 pct. Cold-mold arc melting with graphite electrodes, which is among the more current methods, results in carbon pickup of 0.1 to 0.2 pct. The titanium-sponge melting stock itself contains about 0.02 to 0.07 pct C, picked up from the magnesium used in the reduction process. Thus, carbon is still one of the more important contaminants in titanium and needs careful study and evaluation in order to understand titanium and titanium alloys. Moreover, it is equally proper to consider carbon as an alloying addition because, in controlled amounts in titanium alloys, it may serve a most useful function. This is particularly the case where the ultimate in toughness is not required. The addition of carbon to titanium results in a peritectoid-type system as illustrated in Fig. 1. The solubility of carbon is seen to be higher in the a phase than in the ß phase in the temperature range of interest. Below the peritectoid temperature, the solubility of carbon in a titanium decreases with decreasing temperature. This type of system permits many microstructural and heat-treatment variations which may influence the properties of the alloys. The study of how the microstructure variations affect mechanical properties is described in this paper. Experimental Procedures The experimental techniques and testing methods used in this work were the same as those described in detail in a previous paper.' No further descriptions will be given except where changes have been made. High purity iodide titanium, produced by the New Jersey Zinc Co., was used in all of the alloys. Carbon additions were made using high purity spectro-graphic carbon electrodes in order to obtain the highest purity carbon available. The alloys were prepared by double arc melting to reduce the possibility of segregation. The alloys were forged at 875°C to ¾ in. round, descaled, vacuum annealed for 5 hr at 900°C to remove the residual hydrogen, and swaged to ¼ in. round at 750°C. All heat treatments were made on material in this initial condition. Two of the early Ti-C ingots were found to have been contaminated in melting. Vacuum-fusion analyses showed that the two contaminated alloys had picked up oxygen, so the test results on these two alloys permitted an evaluation of ternary Ti-C-0 alloys. A list of the alloys and their compositions are given in Table I. Properties of Ti-C Alloys In a peritectoid-type system, such as the Ti-C system, the chief microstructural variable which influences the properties is solid-solution strengthening. For a given composition, it is possible to control the disposition of carbon, either in solid solution or as the compound Tic, by suitable heat treatments. When in solid solution, the carbon present in the alloy makes a definite contribution to the strength of the alloy. However, when present as Tic, it has very little effect on the strength. Other microstructural variables considered in this investigation were transformation structures and grain size. As discussed in subsequent sections, these variables have only a minor effect on properties as compared to the solid-solution effect. Solid-Solution Strengthening: The principal strengthening mechanism for Ti-C alloys has been found to be solid-solution strengthening. The temperature ranges in which the three inter-metallic phases in the Nb-Sn system form have been determined and the composition and structure of two of the three phases has been established. The kinetics of the formation of Nb3Sn in cored wire samples has been studied in the temperature range of 800° to 1050°C. From 800°to 950°C the rate of formation increases by four orders of magnitude. The rate-controlling step for the formation process in this temperature range appears to be the diffilsion of tin through NbSn. At higher temperatu~es a change occurs in the mechanism of the formation process such that up to a temperature of 1050°C the rate of formation of Nb3Sn does not increase above the rate observed at 950°C. For temperatures helow 950°C the current-carrying capacity of the wire increases with increased percent reaction reaching a maximum value when the formation process is 90 to 95 pct complete. The maximum current-carrying capacity obtainable in this temperature range is independent of the temperature. Above 950°C tlze current-carrying capacity obtainable in the wire decreases with increasing temperature of formation. A model is proposed which accounts for the ohserved behavior. RECENTLY, Buehler et a1.l reported the results of an investigation of the process variables which influence the superconducting properties of Nb3Sn-cored wire. These results indicated that at least four variables affect the properties of the manufactured wire. These include composition, particle size of the starting powder mix, temperature of heat treatment, and time of heat treatment. In order to understand completely the role of these variables, it is necessary to have an accurate knowledge of the phase equilibria in the Nb-Sn system. At the present time, phase-equilibrium diagrams for the Nb-Sn system have been published by a number of investigators.2-5 The diagrams differ as to the number of phases present, the composition of the phases, and the temperature range of stability of the phases. The present investigation was undertaken in order to resolve these differences. Since the investigation of Buehler et al. demon- strated that the length of time at the temperature of heat treatment affected the superconducting properties of Nb3Sn, it is apparent that it is necessary to understand the kinetics of the formation process as well as the equilibrium conditions before a complete understanding of the system is possible. As a result, the kinetics of formation of the various phases in the system were also studied in this investigation. EXPEFUMENTAL PROCEDURE Diffusion couples and sintered powdered compacts were employed in the phase-diagram investigation. The diffusion couples were made by filling 1/8-in.-ID monel-sheathed niobium tubes with tin. The monel sheath was employed to facilitate drawing.' The tubes were then drawn to a tin-core diameter of 32 mils. Samples approximately 3 in. long were then cut from the drawn composite. The tin was drilled out of the ends to a depth of 1/4 in. and niobium-wire plugs were inserted into the ends and peened over. The monel was removed by etching in concentrated nitric acid, after which the samples were sealed in evacuated quartz bulbs and heat-treated in a resistance-wound tube furnace. The samples were quenched into ice water upon removal from the furnace. The diffusion couple samples were examined metallographically employing a chemical etching solution consisting of 10 ml of saturated chromic acid per g of NaF. In addition, two anodizing solutions were used for phase-identification purposes. The first was the picklesimer7 solution; the second consisted of equal parts by volume of 30 pct H2O2 and concentrated NH4OH to which 1 g of NaF was added per 25 ml of solution. The anodizing conditions for the second solution were 2 v and 100 ma with a tin cathode. The powdered compacts were made by pressing previously mixed powders of 99.9 pct pure Sn and 99.6 pct pure Nb supplied by the United Mineral Co. into cylinders 3/8 in. in diameter by 1/2 in. long. The cylinders were then sealed in quartz tubes and heat-treated in the same manner as the diffusion couples. The samples were examined metallographically and by X-ray diffraction techniques. Since it was desirable to be able to correlate the kinetic data with current-carrying capacity, the type of specimen chosen for this part of the investigation had to be a compromise between the optimum system for studying kinetics and one which was suitable for making current-carrying capacity

IN order to put sufficient work on steel ingots for rails, they must be reduced from about 12 inches square. As this cannot be done at one heat, they are first drawn down to about 7 inches square, and then reheated and rolled into rails. The developed radiometric method of particle system analysis has been applied to investigate the bulk properties of particles precipitated from solutions. The nature and principles of the method applied are described briefly, and some possible models in the field of fine colloid particles precipitation discussed. Changes in radionuclide distribution were followed during the solid phase formation and the data were used to calculate changes in bulk composition of colloid precipitates. The radiometric data show interesting phenomena closely connected with the characteristic of bulk particles. The measured radiometric data are highly reproducible, the applied methods have proved to be sensitive, and the developed techniques have been tested by various standard procedures.

In June 1914, one week before I was to be awarded my sheepskin in upper New York State, I received a telegram from New York City which read "Can offer you position as engineer in Chile at $115 a month contract for one year. (signed) Chile Copper Co." That night, Friday, I took a sleeper to New York and arrived at the Guggenheim Brothers' company office at 165 Broadway, just as it was opening up on Saturday morning. Saturday was no holiday in that era. Presenting the telegram at the office, I was ushered into a sub-executive's office and shown a mimeographed contract which 1) agreed to pay me $115 per month from the date of leaving New York until I returned, and with travelling expenses both ways, 2) fixed a charge of $46 per month for board and lodging in company quarters, and 3) stipulated a contract term of one year with the right to retain my services for another year if the company so elected. While a bit huffed at the year's "kicker" I nevertheless accepted. I was then told to prepare to leave the following Wednesday (June 17) on a United Fruit Co. steamer for Panama. Objecting that I still had to receive my degree on the 17th and had planned a vacation in Ohio for a week or so…

(written discussion).-This paper reminds me that when I had an option on a Nevada mine, where the only orebodies assayed $4 gold, I went to San Francisco to learn the cost of putting broken ore in a 25-ft, vein on the mine cars, and sought Mr. Alfred Wartenweiler, who said "There is not a mine in California that can tell what it costs to move ore in the stopes." When building small mills in the mountains, and with only 30 or 40 employees, by entering in a log at night the work performed by each man, I have been able to plot the costs with the accuracy shown in this paper, and very good discipline it is. Cost of new construction and repairs is carefully kept by most companies, and is compiled after completion; probably the outlay of labor and material in pieces of work sufficiently important to call for blueprints is estimated beforehand, but numberless odd jobs of construction and repairs are so itemized. . Might it not be worth while, at a large plant, to have these smaller daily tasks described in advance in a central repair office, and then let inspectors look over the job, report time and material needed, and enter it in sufficient detail in proper ledgers, the men then being sent to accomplish it, and reporting when finished? The forecasts would soon be made quickly and correctly and would give the head mechanic, carpenter, and electrician easy supervision of their men, and the results could be seen at a glance by the managers.
