Poly crystalline specimens of copper, and copper with various additions of zinc, were tested in plane-bending fatigue. In tests performed at a constant stress, the fatigue life of copper increased slightly with the addition of up to fifteen per cent zinc. There was a sharp increase in fatigue life as further additions of zinc of up to 35 pct were made. Surface observations showed that the coarse slip bands that are characteristic of fatigue became narrower as the concentration of zinc increased. The rate of crack propagation also decreased with increasing zinc content. It is suggested that the fatigue behavior is controlled by cross slip processes. CROSS slip occurs when dislocations move from one primary slip plane to another along a connecting or cross slip plane. The primary and cross slip planes have a common slip direction. Wide stacking faults, having low energy, tend to make cross slip more difficult. According to recent theories, the ability of a material to cross slip is important to the formation and propagation of fatigue cracks. McEvily and Machlin2 have examined this concept experimentally by fatiguing single crys tals of lithium fluoride, sodium chloride, silver chloride, and KRS-5.* The latter two materials ex- hibit easy cross slip, while the former two do not. Normal rapid fatigue failure was obtained in the silver chloride and KRS-5 specimens, whereas it was much more difficult to achieve in sodium chloride and lithium fluoride crystals. Furthermore, numerous slip band extrusions and intrusions were found in silver chloride and KRS-5 crystals, whereas only one isolated extrusion was found in lithium fluoride and none was found in sodium chloride. McEvily and Machlin also consider that there is no clear-cut demarcation between crack initiation and propagation. The intrusion-extrusion process, which initiates crack formation, continues ahead of the cracks to allow propagation of these cracks along slip bands. The process of cross slip is therefore important not only to crack initiation, but also to crack propagation. Holden4 postulates that fatigue crack growth is dependent upon cross slip and thus upon stacking-fault energy. Using an X-ray microbeam technique, he found a cyclic subgrain structure in fatigued aluminum and a-iron. Holden suggests that micro-cracks develop in the densely-packed sub-boundaries ahead of the main crack front, and when sufficiently numerous join up to promote crack growth. The ease with which a subgrain structure could form would depend upon the ability of the dislocations to cross slip, and thus upon the stacking-fault energy. Hence in aluminum, which has a high stack-ing-fault energy and in which cross slip is easy, Holden found that the relative rate of fatigue crack propagation was considerably greater than in stainless steel, a low stacking-fault energy material. It has been shown by a number of investigators that the probability of forming deformation stacking faults in copper increases as zinc is added.5-7 Cross slip should, therefore, become more difficult as the zinc concentration is increased. In order to check the validity of the foregoing theories, it was decided to test copper and copper with various additions of zinc in plane bending fatigue, and determine to what extent their fatigue properties are dependent upon their ability to cross slip. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Fatigue tests were carried out on polycrystalline OFHC copper and various copper-zinc alloys with 5, 15, 20, 30, and 35 wt pct Zn. The Cu-Zn alloys were obtained commercially in sheet form. Test specimens, as shown in Fig. 1, were machined from sheet that had been reduced to an approximate grain size of 0.040 mm, the heat-treatment procedure being similar to that of Feltham anc copley.8

INTRODUCTION The Chord property was acquired in 1975 from Roy Chord, an early prospector and miner of the area. He had staked numerous claims on the southern flank of the Black Hills in the early 19501s, and by the late 50’s, many small open pit and underground mines had been or were in operation. By the mid 1960's small tonnages of high-grade oxidized uranium ore had been mined from the property. Starting in 1975, Union Carbide conducted a series of exploration programs to determine the remaining economic potential. The previously mined areas were re-examined in order to define additional oxidized mineralization. Meanwhile, a wide-spaced drilling program was initiated to determine the potential for deeper unoxidized deposits. Through the exploration program of 1979, measured minable reserves in excess of two million pounds of contained uranium had been discovered. GEOLOGY The Edgemont District is located on the southern end of the Black Hills Uplift. A succession of pre-Cambrian to Cretaceous Formations is exposed within the core and across the flanks. The uranium host is the lower Cretaceous Inyan Kara Group which is divided into two formations, the Lakota and Fall River Formations (Figure 1). The basal Lakota Formation rests unconformably on the Jurassic Morrison Formation and consists of fluvial channel sandstones

THE fall meeting of the Petroleum Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers will be held in Fort Worth on Oct. 19 and 20. The Texas Hotel will be headquarters. for this meeting, the technical sessions being held in the ball-room of the hotel. During the evening of the nineteenth a smoker will be held at the Fort Worth Club. In working out the program for this meeting, J. B. Umpleby, vice-chairman for production engineering, considered it especially desirable to offer as complete a discussion as possible of the subject of air-gas lift, its theory and practice, and its relationship to gas-oil ratios. The entire first day will be devoted to sessions on this subject. One session of the second day will be devoted to the use of electricity in oil-field operations and the second to the handling of congealing oils and paraffin. In addition to this program there will be one or more sessions when petroleum engineering research problems will be discussed. This meeting of the Division is primarily devoted to production engineering, as will be seen from the pro-gram. During one of the sessions, however, a brief review with forecasts of the production situation will be presented.

THE problem of forming points on wires that were from 0.002 in. to 0.010 in. in diam arose in the recent appearance of silicon and germanium point contact rectifiers as elements in microwave radar.1 In these devices a pointed tungsten wire makes a delicate contact with the surface of a semiconductor. Because the quality of such rectifiers is largely determined by the nature of this contact, considerable attention has been given to the formation of the metal point. Reproducibility of contour and freedom from burrs and even microscopic irregularities are considered essential. The operations involved must be simple and rapid enough for mass production. Previously tungsten wires had been provided with conical points by a grinding method which involved rotating a wire about its axis and causing it to bear at an oblique angle against a spinning abrasive disc. This was later complemented with an electrolytic polishing treatment which removed irregularities from the ground point and also rounded it off at the tip-a desirable feature. Finally, these operations were supplanted by the electrolytic pointing method described here. MECHANISM OF POINT FORMATION The wires to be pointed are partially immersed- in an electrolyte in a .vertical position whereupon they are provided with smooth rounded points entirely by electrochemical action. The process is independent of the depths to which the wires penetrate the electrolyte because the points are formed at the surface level. It may be used to point a single wire or many of them simultaneously and is applicable to wires of different diameters within a limited range. Solution of the immersed portion of a tungsten wire is accomplished by making it the positive electrode in an electrolytic cell, as shown in Fig I. While the wire is maintained at constant voltage the current through the cell falls continuously, principally because of the decrease in wetted area which results from solution of the tungsten. This increase in resistance occurs in a reproducible manner and is used as a control in the process. As the immersed portion of the wire dissolves, it remains cylindrical in shape except for the short section which is wetted by the meniscus. Here the rate of solution is lower and decreases as the top of the meniscus is approached. The result is the formation of a tapered section inside the meniscus. As solution continues, the cylindrical section either dissolves entirely or drops off just before complete solution, leaving only the taper which is now sharply pointed. Further action causes this point to become rounded and then quite blunt, until finally the end of the wire is almost plane. Fig 2 shows the stages in this development. MANY independent studies are being made on slag-metal relationships in the open-hearth furnace, and these studies cannot help but result in an ultimate improvement in the quality of open-hearth steel of both the open and killed types In maintaining quality control at the National Tube Company's plant, emphasis has been placed on an evaluation of the iron oxide content of the steel in as quantitative a manner as possible, in order that the most desirable level of oxidation might be obtained for a given type of steel, and to secure a more precise basis for final deoxidation In the past, various methods were used for estimating FeO content of the metal at tap to ensure uniform and thorough deoxidation of killed steel, avoiding over-deoxidation to minimize the amount of inclusions present and to make as sound a steel as possible For the open-type steels, such control involves obtaining the necessary level of oxidation for the most suitable action of the steel in the molds to provide good surface quality and cross section for the specific grade involved While rapid analytical methods are available for determination of FeO in the liquid metal, such methods are still not sufficiently rapid for routine control on the open-hearth floor, nor do such analyses provide information as to what causes high or long FeO values The method of sampling can still be considered a problem in view of the variability encountered in taking simultaneous duplicate tests With the accurate rapid methods now available for determining carbon in the metal, estimating slag basicity and obtaining temperatures of liquid metal, it was believed possible to determine the influence of the various furnace reactions in establishing the state of oxidation at a given time Simultaneous slag and metal tests were used in this analysis, aided by statistical methods, to determine the factors that affect the metal FeO, and also to make a quantitative evaluation of these factors Data obtained are from actual furnace operations, the metal test being of the spoon, Herty type, and taken in duplicate. A model of metallic solutions is postulated which explains the energy of formation of alloys on the basis of changes in electron density around solute and solvent atoms and changes in pairwise interactions between atoms. The model is based on the Wigner-Seitz cell model of metals, with the electronegativities of the metals as the parameter for the electron-attracting power of the constituent atoms. In contrast to models based on the description of cohesive energy in terms of pairwise interactions only, which require an empirical, adjustable correction parameter to the Berthe-lot relations in order to predict negative energies of formation, the electron cell model accounts for both negative and positive energies on the basis of parameters of the pure components. Calculated heats of mixing based on published parameters of the pure metals are found to compare favorably to experimental values, despite the absence of any adjustable parameters in the model. THE formulation of an "exact" quantum mechanical model for the energy of cohesion of metals reduces ultimately to the many-body problem and for a complete solution would require the knowledge of wave functions and energy levels of all the particles in the system. The case of alloys is further complicated by the fact that the potential fields around the constituent atoms are different and the matching of boundary conditions in terms of the resulting wave functions is still an unresolved mathematical problem. It appears that in spite of the numerous investigations that have led to an elucidation of many properties of the metallic state, the formulation of the Hume-Rothery rules in 1931 marks the lone accomplishment toward simple, qualitative prediction of the energy of formation of alloys. More recently Friedel'' and Arafa have utilized the modern concepts of the electronic structure in metals in combination with the Hume-Rothery rules to arrive at quantitative estimates of the energy of formation of alloys with low solute contents. The relative success of the Hume-Rothery rules and Friedel's and Arafa's studies encouraged broaching the subject of formulation of a model based on realistic physical parameters and of conceptual and mathematical simplicity that could be applied to alloys regardless of concentration. On the basis of the free-electron theory, the cohesive energy of pure metals can be expressed as a function of "valence" (number of free electrons per atom), lattice parameter (or density), and the ioniza-tion energy. In addition to the electronic contributions to cohesion, one has to consider the pairwise exchange interaction energy between neighboring ion cores and the contribution from van der Waals forces. The energy changes upon alloying are viewed as resulting primarily from a redistribution of electron densities around the ions (a simplification of the more basic concept of a change of the wave functions of the electrons in the presence of a perturbing potential field). In addition there is a change in the pairwise interactions between neighboring ions which is usually the only factor taken into account in commonly used adaptations of the quasichemical theory. The electronegativities of the metals forming the alloy are used as the measure of the electron-attracting power of the ions in the alloy and the difference in electronegativities as the driving force for changes in electron energy on alloying. The interplay of pairwise interactions and electronic forces results in positive or negative energies of formation of alloys. THE steadily rising flood of gold production from all parts of the world has created an avalanche of rumors regarding the stability of the present price of this metal. Markets have been unsettled from Johannesburg to London from New York and Toronto to Melbourne, despite repeated denials from, American and British authorities of any immediate intention to alter the price. Various economists and financial writers have blossomed forth with predictions that the price would be set at the old level of $20.67 per oz.; some have even been so brash as to state That a price of $15 would be necessary to bring production within control. These effusions, based entirely upon monetary theories and with no regard to production costs, serve to confuse rather than clarify the situation.

The Cuajone and Toquepala copper projects are located in the extreme southern area of Peru. Since 1960, Southern Peru Copper Company has operated the Toquepala open -pit mine, flotation mill, 110 smelter, townsites, power plants, and railroad. Toquepala and 10, the smelter and port location, are connected by a 110-mile-long (176 lun) railroad. Much of Toquepala's infrastructure has been used for the Cuajone project. Cuajone, at an elevation of 11,400 ft (3475 m), required five standard-guage railroad tunnels with a combined length of 17 miles (27.2 km) to connect with Toquepala so concentrates could be shipped to the no smelter. The total cost of Cuajone is estimated at $726 million for a designed annual capacity of 180,000 tons of copper, equivalent to about $4,000 per ton of installed production capacity. This relatively low cost per ton, by today's standards, has been made possible through the use of the 110-to Toquepala railroad, the ability to expand the 110 copper smelter, and other favorable factors. To mine the 468 million tons of copper sulfide or e at a grade of 1.0% copper, approximately 24 1 million tons of waste were stripped- before mining of ore to supply the new Botiflaca 45, 000 ton per day concentrator. The mining rate must exceed 300,000 tons of waste plus ore per day to maintain the 45, 0 00 tpd sulfide ore milling rate which was to be reached at the end of 1976. Waste stripping is done with 15 cu yd electric shovels and 120 -ton trucks. Ore mining is done with 8 and 9 yd shovels. A railroad connects the pit with the 60 in. by 89 in. Allis-Chalmers gyratory crusher. Side-dump railroad cars of 50.cu yd capacity dump onto a 0 16 ft 9 in. long (5. 1 m) grizzly inclined at 40º with 7 to 8 in. (178 to 203 rnrn) bar spacings. The grizzly is divided into two 22 ft 4 in. (6.8 m) wide sections and two side -dump railroad cars discharge simultaneously into the 150-ton capacity dump pocket. A Barco rock manipulator is used for breaking or removing oversize from the dump pocket. The bin receiving the grizzly undersize has a capacity of 5,000 tons, and the pocket beneath the crusher holds 900 tons. Each is equipped with an 84 in. apron feeder, which feeds a 60 in. (1.52 m) conveyor belt to the 150,000 ton coarse ore stockpile, where the ore is distributed by a 72 in. (1. 83 m) tripper conveyor. OBSERVATIONS have been made that the substitution of antimony for bismuth in Bi2Te3 leads to anomalies in some of the electrical and magnetic properties of the Bi2Te3-5S2TeS alloy system at the composition ratios 2 Bi2Te3 : 1 Sb2Tes and 1 Bi2Te3 : 2 Sb2Te3. Airapetiants and Efimova1 have reported the peaking of the nondegenerate hole mobilities, at these compositions for sintered materials and ascribe the peaking to the formation of ordered alloys. THE martensitic transformations occurring in ,B AgCd as a result of cold working at room temp.. a-ture and cooling below room ten1erature have been reported by Masson and Barrett.1 These authors found that simple cooling to 127°K caused body-cen-tered-cubic AgCd containing 53.0 at. pct Ag to transform to an orthorhombic structure, while mechanical deformation at room temperature was found to induce a hexagonal structure. Furthermore, they observed that the temperature at which martensite first appeared on cooling, Ms, and that at which the transformation was complete, MI, as well as the corresponding temperatures for the reversion on heating, As and Af, could be ascertained to ± 1°K, although they report these temperatures only for the alloy containing 53.0 at. pct Ag (51.96 wt pct). In the work reported here the temperature range of the transformation on cooling was studied as a function of composition, and further consideration was given to the relationship between the original bcc structure and the transformation-induced hexagonal and orthorhomic structures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE All samples studied were in the form of annealed 300-mesh powder and were prepared from the constituent metals in the manner described previously.1 The compositions in weight and atomic pct are listed in Columns 1 and 2 of Table I. Method of determination of transformation temperature was the same as utilized previously1—measurement of the intensity of X-rays diffracted by the transformation product. A diagram of the low-temperature sample mount is shown in Fig. 1. This mount was made to fit a GE model XRD-3 X-ray diffraction unit. The powder sample was varnished to a flat surface on a copper sample holder at A. This sample holder was soldered to a brass rod, B, which was in turn soldered to a second copper rod, C. Rod C could be cooled to 78°K by inserting it into a reservoir of liquid nitrogen, D. A heater coil of nichrome wire was wound at E on the sample holder, and by varying the current through the heater a thermal gradient could be maintained along brass rod B. Sample temperatures from 78°K up could be attained and held as long as needed. The sample holder and nitrogen reservoir were insulated by Styrofoam, F, and the sample itself was protected by two radiation shields, G. The X-ray beam entered and left the sample chamber through windoys in the supporting container at H and I. Sample temperatures were measured by a calibrated copper-constantan thermocouple varnished to the sample holder just out of the beam at A. The low-temperature structure had been found to possess orthorhombic symmetry1 and the expected positions of the diffraction maxima were known. Therefore the sample was aligned in the X-ray beam and the Geiger counter of the spectrometer set to receive the most intense orthorhombic reflection without an adjacent interfering cubic reflection. To a very large extent the quality of a mild steel ingot is determined by the manner in which it is poured into the ingot mold and its behavior during the first few minutes after it has been poured. The formation of the solid rim of metal around the periphery of the mold, the effervescent action of the liquid steel within this solidified rim and the upward or downward movement of the metal level are indications of what is going on beneath the surface of the liquid metal, especially at the interface at which solidification occurs. Observation of this "rimming action" enables an experienced observer to predict the thickness of the sound skin of the ingot and the location and extent of cavities or "blowholes" caused by entrapment of gases. The control of rimming action at the hands of a skillful steel pourer is a vital part of the control of quality in mild steel sheet, and the behavior of the liquid steel during the rimming period is a useful criterion of the melting and refining practices employed in the open hearth. The behavior of rimming steel during solidification depends primarily upon the evolution of gases from the molten metal and it is therefore a problem of considerable interest to determine the nature and amount of the gases evolved. A number of attempts to determine either the amount or the analysis of the, evolved gases have been reported. Klinger,1 in 1925, analyzed the gases extracted from rimming, semikilled and killed steel ingots and found that the chief constituent of the rimming gas was carbon monoxide. The relatively large amounts of nitrogen reported in his first few samples may have been due to incomplete removal of air from the gas-collecting mechanism. McKune2 reported similar studies of rimming ingots from which surprisingly large proportions of nitrogen and hydrogen were evolved. Ameen and Willners3 determined both the amount and composition of gases extracted from unkilled ingots with the aid of diminished pressure. Their ingots weighed only 80 kg. (176 lb.) and apparently were solid within two or three. minutes, so that their

At high temperatues and reduced oxygen pressuves, molybdenum silicicles oxidize to form SiO(g) vathev than a passivating SiO2 film. This is a sevious problem for low-pressure applications of sili-cide-coated rejvactory tnetals. As oxiclalion pvoceeds, the higher oxidntion potential of silicon initially suppresses oxidation of molybdenum and silicon is depleted near the surface. Eventually, silicon depletion causes secondary passivation (SiO2) mid an active to passiue transition in oxidntion behavior at moderately low pressures. At very low pressures, silicon depletion continues until steady-state oxidation of both silicon and rnolyhdenum can proceed at rates propovtional to their initial stoicliiorrzetvies. Ohsel-vations of 'oxidatiou-rate belzcriliov at temperatures from 1101° to 1700°C and oxygen pressures from 10-7 to 1 at in were made using thermogravimetn'c, X-ray diffraction, and elect?*on-rtric?ro/,vobe techniqrres. The experimental results are in good agreement with calculated lirnits for the various types of behavior that were based on tlievtnochernicnl atzd dffusion rate data for the Mo-Si system. A protective oxide film normally forms during the oxidation of elemental silicon. However, at elevated temperatures and reduced pressures this film is not present and oxidation is rapid. wagnerl has shown that this behavior occurs because SiO(g) is more stable than SiO2. The behavior of the silicides at high temperatures is similar but more complicated. Molybdenum and several silicide compounds are involved and the chemical activity of silicon, or the equivalent silicon vapor pressure, can vary considerably in these phases. Also, diffusion in the silicides resulting from reactions in which a higher silicide is reduced to a lower silicide, or molybdenum containing dissolved silicon, must be considered. EXPERIMENTAL AND ANALYTICAL METHODS Isothermal oxidation experiments were conducted using hot-pressed MoSi2 and Mo5Si3 wafers. Each experiment was conducted at a fixed oxygen pressure by controlling the flow of oxygen in and out of the furnace chamber. Most of the experiments were conducted in a molybdenum-wound tube furnace. Special construction features, including use of a high-purity dense A12O3 refractory tube, permitted operation in high vacuum to 1500°C. Higher temperatures could be obtained at higher working pressures and with a sacrifice of tube lifetime. Temperature was measured with three Pt 6 pct Rh/Pt 30 pct Rh thermocouples and controlled with a proportional controller. Weight changes were monitored with a quartz spring balance. The few experiments, at higher temperatures and low pressures, were conducted in a cold wall vacuum chamber using induction heating with direct susceptance of the sample. Because of the variable levitation effect of the induction coil on the sample, weight changes could not be monitored continuously in these experiments. All samples representing both experimental methods were weighed before and after oxidiation and examined with a microscope and analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The analytical treatment assumes equilibrium at interfaces and uses existing thermodynamic data. For convenience, equilibria are expressed as chemical potentials or as vapor pressures of the gases involved. The resulting differences in equilibrium vapor pressure between adjacent interfaces and between the surface and external atmosphere drive diffusion processes in the solid and gas boundary film, respectively. These diffusion processes govern the rate of oxidation. A bibliography of the sources of thermochemical data for the reactions pertinent to the Mo-Si-O system is given in Table I. Reactions are listed with the sources of free-energy data referenced. Since all of these reactions involve one or more gas species, usually oxygen, a plot of the product-gas chemical potential, -RT In Pg, vs absolute temperature for each reaction is given in Fig. 1. These curves can be used to determine equilibrium vapor pressures or to compare the stability of different compounds in the various gases: O2, Si, SiO, and Moo3,. The data of Table I and Fig. 1 were used to determine the analytical results presented in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The weight changes for three MoSi, samples oxidized at 1500°C are plotted against time in Fig. 2. The treatments were identical except for the indicated variance of oxygen pressure and each curve represents one of three characteristic types of behavior that were observed. This was later complemented with an electrolytic polishing treatment which removed irregularities from the ground point and also rounded it off at the tip—a desirable feature. Finally, these operations were supplanted by the electrolytic pointing method described here. Mechanism of Point Formation The wires to be pointed are partially immersed in an electrolyte in a vertical position whereupon they are provided with smooth rounded points entirely by electrochemical action. The process is independent of the depths to which the wires penetrate the electrolyte because the points are formed at the surface level. It may be used to point a single wire or many of them simultaneously and is applicable to wires of different diameters within a limited range. Solution of the immersed portion of a tungsten wire is accomplished by making it the positive electrode in an electrolytic cell, as shown in Fig I. While the wire is maintained at constant voltage the current through the cell falls continuously, principally because of the decrease in wetted area which results from solution of the tungsten. This increase in resistance occurs in a reproducible manner and is used as a control in the process. As thc immersed portion of the wire dissolves, it remains cylindrical in shape except for the short section which is wetted by the meniscus. Here the rate of solution is lower and decreases as the top of the meniscus is approached. The result is the formation of a tapered section inside the meniscus. As solution continues, the cylindrical section either dissolves entirely or drops off just before complete solution, leaving only the taper which is now sharply pointed. Further action causes this point to become rounded and then quite blunt, until finally the end of the wire is almost plane. Fig 2 shows the stages in this development. HISTORY. THE use of iron for the precipitation of copper was known at least as early as the fifteenth century. Both Paracelsus and Basil Valentine refer to it in their writings, as early as 1500 A. D. It was used in Peru for this purpose prior to 1637, and at Rio Tinto, Spain, as early as the sixteenth century. The statement has been made repeatedly that in the early history of the mining industry at Butte, the practicability of this method of recovering copper from solution was overlooked, and that enormous quantities of copper-bearing water were allowed to go to waste, the copper in which might easily have been recovered at small cost; and .that this oversight on the part of the mine operators was due to ignorance of this method of recovering copper. As a matter of fact, very little copper-bearing mineral was encountered in the mines of Butte until a depth of 400 or 500 ft. bad been reached, and in many cases much greater depths were necessary to reach the copper-bearing zone. The water encountered in the upper levels (although in most cases quite highly mineralized) contained little or no copper, and it was only after considerable areas of copper-bearing ore' had been uncovered and developed that copper sulphate began to appear in the mine water in any considerable quantity. In fact, the first water that was observed to contain copper carried it in such small amounts as to be of little or no importance. It was only after years of underground work had opened extensive areas of stopes, drifts, and other underground workings, these being subsequently filled with waste, nearly all of which contained small copper values, which became oxidized by exposure to the air and were acted upon by the slowly percolating mineral water, that the recovery of copper from mine water became commercially important.

The monocarbides of the A subgroup elements in the fourth and fifth group of the periodic table in addition to being hard and refractory are of special interest in that they are isomorphous in crystalline structure. They are cubic with a sodium chloride type structure in which the metal atoms are essentially close packed in a face-centered cubic arrangement with the carbon atoms placed in the interstices between. Interstitial structures of this close packed type were first investigated systematically by Egg1 and he gave the rule for their formation, stating that the radius ratio of the nonmetal to the metal atom should not exceed the value of 0.59. The carbides of interest are those of titanium and zirconium of the fourth group and vanadium, columbium and tantalum of the fifth group. Table 1 shows the radius ratio using the Goldschmidt radii for 12 coordination for the metal atoms and the diamond radius for the carbon atom. It will be noted that while there is considerable variation in the size of the metal atom, in all cases the ratio is smaller than the limit of 0.59 placed by Hägg. It has been known for some time that these cubic carbides are soluble in one another, at least to some extent or, in other words, the metal atoms can be replaced, one by another without destroying the stability of the structure. Since the stability of these close packed interstitial substances appears to depend more upon geometry than upon the exact chemical nature of the atoms involved, it is of interest to examine the possibilities of replacement in these carbides in some detail. Hume-Rothery2 has pointed out the importance of the difference in size of solute and solvent atom as a factor in limiting the solubility in simple binary solid solutions. Largely on an empirical basis, he states that if the difference in size between solvent and solute atom is more than 14-15 pct of the solvent atom, the range of solubility is very restricted. The atom size was based on the distance of closest approach in the elements involved. While there is some question as to how one should calculate the size of the metal atom in the carbide structures, reference to Table 1 will show that zirconium is the largest and vanadium the smallest of the group and that the difference is about 15 pct. The Ti-Zr difference is about 9 pct and the others are smaller. Thus one would predict that if the size factor controls the solubility, all of the pairs except VC-ZrC would have wide or complete solubility whereas this latter pair is on the border line and might have restricted solubility. The purpose of the present investi- gation was to examine the solubility of the several pairs of carbides by heating them together until equilibrium was established and then examining the product by X rays. Previous Work Agte3 and his associates prepared various transition metal carbides and determined the melting points of binary mixtures. He concluded from the shapes of the melting point curves that there was extensive solubility in the case of the cubic carbides. Umanskii and his colleagues made an investigation of a number of pairs of the cubic carbides, using X rays and plotted lattice parameter vs. composition curves for the systems TaC-Tic, CbC-Tic, TaC-ZrC and CbC-ZrC. All pairs showed a continuous series of solid solutions. The first two pairs gave a linear relation while the latter two showed a negative deviation from Vegard's law. Kiefer and Nowotny, in a paper which became available after the present work was well advanced, investigated the binary pairs of the five cubic carbides by means of X rays. Relatively few points were obtained and results indicated that in some cases, at least, equilibrium was not reached at the temperatures used. The results indicated that solubility in the VC-ZrC system was not complete. All of the results of previous investigations indicated the desirability of a more detailed study. Materials The raw materials used were mono-carbides of titanium, zirconium, vanadium, columbium and tantalum and were the purest which could readily be obtained commercially. Spectrographic qualitative analysis showed that the CbC and TaC contained less than 1 pct

Structural steels containing chromium have become widely used in the last 20 years. In the earlier part of this period the major applications were in chromium-molybdenum aircraft tubing and similar special high-strength steels. During the past 10 years there has been a notable expansion in the use of chromium-bearing steel for structural purposes when welding was utilized for fabrication. The chromium-bearing steels introduced by Saklatwallal (chromium-copper), Kinzel2 (chromium-manganese-silicon), and Schultz3 (chromium-copper) are being extensively used at the present time. General Effects of Chromium Chromium is so widely known for its carbide-forming tendency that its capacity to stabilize oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus is often overlooked. In low-carbon steels of the structural type these so-called secondary characteristics become more prominent. For this reason also, chromium in structural steel is definitely a toughening agent. As the carbon content is increased, the more widely known hardening effect becomes more evident. In low-carbon steels chromium increases the notched-bar impact strength substantially. This property persists at subzero temperatures and is utilized for low-temperature service in chromium-copper steel.4 Chromium also reduces any tendency to strain-aging embrittlement. In addition to improving the toughness of steels with the usual impurities, chromium has the specific property of counteracting the brittleness induced by high phosphorus.5,6 In steels low in carbon and alloys, chromium has an almost negligible effect on tensile strength, and a hardening influence is noticeable only in the stronger steels. The ductility of welds adjacent to the base plate is also improved by chromium, both in the range of foolproof welding steels having strengths of less than 80,000 lb. per sq. in. as well as in the higher strength steels.
