DAME Nature was in a generous mood when she distributed widely over the face of the globe numerous deposits of phosphate rock from which man can make phosphatic festiIizer to replace the phosphate re- moved from the soil by crops. The principal deposits are readily accessible to the world's greatest consuming areas and most of them are such that mining operations can be carried on at relatively low cost. The world's known reserves shown in Table 1 are sufficient to last well over 2000 gears at the present rate of consumption. Before giving a brief outline of the phosphate rock industry of foreign countries let us try to get a picture of the movement of phosphate rock throughout the world in 1938, the last full normal calendar year where it came from and where it was consumed. Table 2 shows the origin and finial destination of world shipments in 1938 by grand divisions. Table 3 (p. 499) shows shipment9 of phosphte rock to each country in Europe. Europe is seen to be by far the world's greatest market and the French North African mines the world's most important producers outside of the U. S. A.

THE Star shaft is near the north boundary of the group of mining claims belonging to the Ground Hog Unit of the American Smelting and Refining Co., near Vanadium, N. Mex. The shaft bins and surface plant are served by a siding from the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad, and this factor of railroad transportation influenced the choice of site. This paper describes the shaft sinking only, and does not cover the surface plant or other parts of the mine or its equipment. Experience with this shaft seems of interest because of the mechanical mucking, good rate of progress, and the costs obtained at the present level of labor and material costs. The shaft has four compartments, as shown in fig. 1. Equipment: Riddell Mucker: The mucking was done by a clamshell bucket and a Riddell mucker, which, as in other shafts sunk with this machine, consisted of a carriage mounted on axles with double flanged wheels that traveled back and forth on a swinging track, parallel to the long axis of the shaft (fig. 2 to 6). Three air motors were mounted on the carriage; one hoisted the clam, one operated the bucket opening and closing device, and the third moved the carriage along the track. The carriage was designed with guide shoes and could be hoisted to the surface in either skip compartment without trouble (fig. 4). During blasting operations the clam was tied on the rails and the carriage was hoisted up a few sets to protect it from flying rock. No attempt was made to hoist the carriage and clam together lest the clam catch in the timbers. The track on which the carriage operated was built of extra heavy 6 in. pipe with 1x2 in. strap welded on top for rails. A 1/2x4 in. angle was welded on the bottom of the 6 in. pipe with a 1 in. round rod welded in the angle for a filler and additional strength. The end or cross pieces of the track which kept the track to gauge, were also made of reinforced, heavy 6 in. pipe and were bolted to the long members on which the carriage traveled (fig. 2 and 3). This section of track was used, instead of heavy railroad rails, for two reasons: (1) this section would bend before it snapped and was much safer for the men in the bottom; and (2) it was a better blasting shield, and protected the timbers better, in fact, only five wall plates were broken by blasting in 1926 ft of shaft, although 150 to 225 lb of 40 pct powder was loaded per round, depending on the ground conditions. The swinging track was supported by four 5/s in. hoisting cables anchored to the end plates. There were also four safety cables fastened two to three sets above the carriage, which would catch the carriage if one of the supporting cables should fail for any reason (fig. 7). Clamshell Buckets: Two clams were used, each of 3/s yard capacity, both manufactured by Blaw Knox, Nos. 662 and 663. The No. 663 clam was 4 in. wider and 5 in. shorter than the No. 662, but seemed to dig and load more satisfactorily. It was easier to hoist and lower when it came up for repair. QUANTITATIVE values for the oxidation rate of unalloyed molybdenum in air at temperatures above the melting point (1460°F) of the characteristic oxide are contained in the literature as a result of previous investigations. Lustman' reported values corresponding to 0.36 in. penetration per day (IPD) at 1500 and 1600°F in still air, noting essentially no variation in rate with temperature. Jones, Spretnak, and Speiser' reported values corresponding to 0.14 and 0.13 IPD at 1500 and 1800°F, respectively, in still air, attributing the decreased oxidation rate at higher temperatures to a lesser accumulation of the corrosive molten oxide on the surface at the higher temperature as a result of increased volatilization rate. Harwood3 ecently summarized work in the field, presenting generalized data corresponding to 0.48 to 0.96 IPD at 1800°F and 0.55 to 0.83 IPD at 1700°F in slowly flowing air. In a recent program at Battelle, it became desirable to know more about the characteristic oxidation behavior of molybdenum under varying conditions of temperature and atmosphere. Using oxidation-test apparatus designed for dynamic, continuous recording of weight change during testing,' values for the oxidation rate of molybdenum were obtained at temperatures from 1400 to 2150°F. In addition the effect of air flow on the oxidation rate was studied briefly at temperatures of 1600, 1800, and 2000°F. Exhaust of the contaminated atmosphere from the oxidation chamber was effected by an impeller pump attached to a 3/16-in.-diam opening in the oxidation chamber. The volumetric exhaust rate (cubic feet per hour) was normally maintained slightly in excess of the input rate to avoid condensation of MOO,,' on the sample suspension rod. The entering atmosphere was preheated prior to admission to the oxidation chamber by a 1 1/2-in.-diam cup packed with shredded asbestos. The experimental data are presented in Table I. Comparing conditions 2 and 3 (taking into account the temperature difference) and conditions 8 and 9. shows that in the absence of forced exhaust an atmosphere of moving air results in greater oxidation rate than a stagnant atmosphere. The use of forced exhaust, as shown by comparing conditions 3 and 4 and conditions 14 and 15: resulted in an even greater increase in oxidation rate. By virtue of the size of the atmosphere input and exhaust openings, it was calculated that the exhaust velocity was about 60 times that of the input velocity for essentially equal volumetric flow rates. Because of the proximity (about 3/4 in.) of the exhaust port to the specimen, it is logical to assume that cleansing of the atmosphere immediately surrounding the specimen was accomplished much more efficiently by the exhaust flow than by the input flow at a constant-volumetric flow rate. Also, it can be seen by comparing conditions 4 through 7 and conditions 11 through 13 that increasing the rate of atmosphere flow (by increasing input velocity with a proportional increase in exhaust velocity) above some optimum value has little, if any, further effect on the oxidation rate. These results suggest that there is a maximum oxidation rate for molydenum at a given temperature which is obtained when conditions are maintained such that the partial pressure of MOO3 in the atmosphere surrounding the specimen is at a low value. By controlling the partial pressure of MOO, surrounding the sample, it is possible to control the rate of volatilization of MOO:, from the surface. This, in turn, affects the rate of oxidation, since the thickness of the MOO3 layer determines the amount of oxygen which will be able to reach the reaction surface.' When the liquid oxide layer is less than some critical thickness, i.e., when the volatilization rate is high, enough oxygen is transported to the active surface to permit oxidation to proceed at the maximum rate allowed by the kinetics of the oxidation reaction. However, if the volatilization of MOO,, is suppressed, the thickness of the layer of MOO3 on the surface increases, and the diffusion of oxygen through the oxide layer becomes the rate-controlling step in the oxidation process. The lack of agreement between the present results and those of previous investigators is presumed to be due to differences in removal of the oxidation product (Moo,) from the immediate vicinity of the sample. By comparing conditions 1, 5, 10, 12 and 14, it is seen that when forced exhaust was used the oxidation rate of molybdenum increased with increasing temperature. A heat transfer study was made of hot gas injection into oil shale through wells interconnected by vertical fractures. This analysis involved the simultaneous numerical solution of a nonlinear, second-order partial differential equation that describes two-dimensional conduction heat transfer in oil shale and a nonlinear first-order partial differential equation that describes convection heat transfer in the fractures. Three nonlinear, temperature-dependent coefficients were used in this work; they are thermal conductivity, thermal capacity and retorting endothermic heat losses of oil shale. Vertical fractures were considered to be of finite height. Although vertical conduction heat transfer was not considered, an estimate of the error resulting from this limitation was made. The effects of injected gas temperature, injection rate, system geometry, cyclic injection and time upon retorting efficiency were investigated. Results from this study show that the rate of retorting oil shale is a direct function of both injection temperature and rate, and the theoretical producing air-oil ratio:(AOR) is an inverse function of temperature. Retorting rates are constant until "breakthrough" of the 700 F isotherm at the producing well, assuming constant injection parameters. Retorting rates for bounded systems are higher than the analogous unbounded systems and likewise AOR's are less. The use of an alternating injection-soak routine with high injection rates is less efficient than continuous injection at lower rates. These results indicate that injection temperatures on the order of 2000F or greater may give theoretical AOR's in the economic range. INTRODUCTION Over half of the known oil shale reserves are located in the U.S., and most of them lie in the Piceance Creek basin of Western Colorado. The Colorado oil shale outcrops on the edges of the Piceance Creek Basin. At the outcrops the shale beds are relatively thin, from 25 to 50 ft thick. In the center of the basin the oil shale is as great as 2,000 ft thick and is covered with 1,000 ft of overburden. It has been estimated that there are over 1,000 billion bbl of oil in shales having an oil content over 15 gal/ton in this basin. Oil shale does not contain free oil but an organic matter called kerogen. Kerogen yields petroleum hydrocarbons by destructive distillation. It must be heated to approximately 700F, at which temperature it decomposes into shale oil, gases and coke. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and, more recently, oil companies have conducted considerable research on surface retorting methods to economically recover oil from this shale. Another approach to exploit the oil shale deposits, in particular that portion having 1,000 ft of overburden, is to retort the oil shale in place and produce the liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons through wells drilled into the shale. Some research has been done on this approach.l,2 There are several variations to the in situ retorting approach. These variations fall into one of two groups, depending upon the geometry of the system: (1) retorting in a highly fractured or broken up matrix; (2) retorting from single fractures between production and injection wells. The latter is the group studied. Several investigators,3-6 using various assumptions, have studied flow of heat through horizontal systems. The objective of this work was to make a heat transfer study of in situ retorting oil shale by hot gas injection through wells interconnected by single vertical fractures of finite height. The effect of the rate of cooling on titanium, zirconium, and thallium has been measured. For titanium-molybdenum alloys, it has been shown that for molybdenum concentration up to 8 pct the rate of cooling has no effect on the transformation temperature, but this temperature decreases progressively with increasing molybdenum content. HIGH strength to weight ratio and remarkable corrosion resistance have often been advanced as the main reasons for the present widespread interest in titanium. For the physical metallurgist, the existence of an allotropic transformation in titanium is another important factor. As in the case of iron, an allotropic transformation may be the fundamental property upon which the response of Ti-base alloys to heat treatment will depend. It is therefore important to study the mechanism of the allotropic transformation in pure titanium and the effect of alloying elements on this transformation. The existence of an allotropic transformation in titanium was reported in 1931 by Schulze.' Later, De Boer et al.' determined the transformation temperature from a discontinuity in the electrical resistivity at 882"42O°C. According to recent work," the transformation temperature is 882.5"&1°C. The crystal structure of the room temperature a phase is hexagonal close-packed and the high temperature fi phase is body-centered cubic.' It is well known that the high temperature /3 phase of pure titanium cannot be retained by quenching to room temperature. Several investigators'-' have shown that in alloys of titanium with metals which are soluble in the @ phase (for example, nickel, molybdenum, chromium, or manganese), the /3 structure can be retained, providing the concentration of the alloying element is greater than a certain critical value. Below this critical value, the alloys transform during quenching, at least partially, into a supersaturated solid solution having the a. structure. This behavior is very similar to that found in some iron binary alloys (Fe-Ni and Fe-Mh, for example) and is an indication that the transformation might occur by means of a shear mechanism analogous to that observed in the austenite-martensite reaction. The present investigation is mostly concerned with the effect of the rate of cooling on the /3 to a transformation. In the first portion of this paper, the results obtained on pure titanium are described. Two other pure metals, zirconium and thallium, were also investigated, because they both have an allotropic transformation like titanium, from an hexagonal close-packed to a body-centered cubic structure. For purposes of comparison, the effect of rate of cooling of the y to a transformation of iron was included in the experimental program. The second part of this paper deals with Ti-Mo alloys. The equilibrium phase boundaries involving the solid state reactions on the Ti-rich side of the system were determined and a study was made of the effect of the rate of cooling on the transformation of the high temperature /3 solid solution. Experimental Procedure Since the main object of the present investigation was the determination of the effect of the rate of cooling on a transformation temperature, the best technique available was that used by Greninger" in his study of the martensite arrest in carbon steels. This method consists of heating a very small sample of metal to which fine thermocouple wires are .attached, cooling the sample rapidly by means of a blast of helium, and recording the temperature vs. time curve on an oscillograph. The apparatus used in the present experiments was very similar to that described by Greninger, except that the heating coil was made of molybdenum wire (0.040 in. in diam) and the assembly was placed in a bell jar under vacuum of 10" mm Hg or less. The Mogollon mining district is in the southwestern part of New Mexico near the southern end of the Mogollon range, from which the district takes its name. The town of Mogollon is but 371/2 miles in an air line northeast of Clifton, Ariz. The air-line distance from Silver City is 521/2 miles and from Tyrone, 57 miles. Supplies are transported by motor truck from Silver City. The distance by road is 75 miles, half of which is an improved highway of modern construction. Transportation has always been a large item of expense in carrying on operations in the district. Valuable ore is said to have been discovered in the Mogollon Mountains as early as 1870 but the first regular prospecting was carried on in 1875, by James C. Cooney, a sergeant from Fort Bayard. His discovery of rich silver-copper ores in the region of Mineral Creek led to the establishment of the Camp of Cooney. Remote from any settlements where there was a semblance of law and order, and harassed by the Apaches, development was slow and nearly 10 years elapsed before the village of Mogollon was established on Silver Creek. Prospecting in this section of the district had disclosed the outcrops of several promising veins containing silver-gold ores. Among the early claims located were the Last Chance, Top and Confidence, on what has proved to be the most productive vcin in the district. To the end of 1922, the Last Chance and Top claims had produced approximately 600,000 tons of ore and nearly 200,000 tons had come from the Confidence group of claims. The total value of the ore produced from this vein alone has amounted to about $9,600,000 in silver and gold. The Fanney vein was developed later and during its most active period of production contributed more than half of the output of the district. Other important locations, though far less productive than the above, were the Maude S, Deep Down, the Deadwood and the Pacific.

Kermac Potash Co., the newest American entry in a rapidly expanding industry, has come on the scene with notable variations in conventional shaft-sinking and mining techniques. Located in the famed potash producing district east of Carlsbad, N. Mex., Kermac started up its mine in November, 1965, to supply ore to the company's 500,000-tpy potash crystallization refinery. In so doing, the company (1) drilled the first large diameter mine shaft in the potash industry and (2) has employed new continuous miners especially adapted for use in thin potash beds. REACHING THE ORE ZONE In its initial mine planning, Kermac, a partnership owned jointly by Kerr-McGee Corp. and the National Farmers Union Development Corp., considered it imperative that the shafts be sunk and equipped as soon as possible and that the mine be developed sufficiently to insure a constant ore feed to the mill when the unit was placed on stream. After examining the alternative sinking techniques available to it, the company decided to accept a proposal by Big Hole Drillers, Inc., to drill the shaft from the surface through various formations of sandstones, siltstone, shales, anhydrite, limestones, dolomite and salts to the potash ore zone.

ABOUT three years ago eight standard steels were prepared for the cooperative investigation of methods for oxygen analysis, sponsored by the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and by the National Bureau of Standards. A preliminary report of the results was made at the annual meeting of the A.I.M.E. in February, 1936. ? This report showed the reliability of vacuum-fusion methods and further brought out certain advantages of the fractional vacuum-fusion method. The results obtained by the authors with the latter method will be discussed here, with some com-ments on the procedure for those who are interested in determinations of gases in steel. Some additional comments are offered on the use of the polarizing microscope for identifying the inclusions in the steel to check and amplify the findings of the fractional vacuum-fusion analysis. Season-cracking is a type of failure of brass that results from the simultaneous effect of stress and certain corrodants. The object of this paper is to present data that will aid in a more complete understanding of the mechanism of season-cracking and related phenomena. Results presented show that certain high copper alloys are susceptible to season-cracking or stress-corrosion cracking, and possible explanations are discussed. Starting at least as far back as 1906, many papers have been devoted to this subject but the symposium1 held in Philadelphia in 1944 is the richest source of information. In order to study season-cracking, several of the many variables were held constant so as to learn the effects of others. Season-cracking is generally understood to refer to the corrosion cracking of brass having internal stresses;²,³ it is a special case of the general stress-corrosion cracking. Inasmuch as applied stresses are more readily produced and controlled, they were used exclusively in this research and the resulting phenomenon must he called stress-corrosion cracking.²,³ Only constant tensile stresses were used. The agents believed to be most frequently responsible for season-cracking are ammonia. amines and compounds containing then]. Both moisture and oxygen also appear to he necessary. Therefore, an atmosphere containing ammonia, water-vapor and air was selected for these tests. Briefly, the work consisted of exposing sheet metal specimens, having a reduced section ¼ by 0.050 in., of copper-base alloys to the effect of static tensile stresses between 5,000 and 20,000 psi and simultaneous contact with a. continuously renewed atmosphere containing 80 pct air, 16 pct ammonia and 4 pct water vapor at 35°C. The gas mixture and the speci- mens were maintained above the dew-point. The time-to-failure in minutes was the primary measure of results. In order to limit the experiment to finite time, it was considered that a specimen which had neither failed nor undergone microscopically detectable cracking in 40,000 min. (4 weeks) while under a stress of 10,000 psi or more could be considered immune to cracking. This is merely a convenient limit and is not to be considered proof of immunity. Supplementary tests in the absence of stress using weight loss or microscopical appearance as measures of attack were made. Apparatus The apparatus used in this research is shown in Fig 1. To facilitate the description it may conveniently be divided into six parts: stress-producing units, test chamber, gas train, electrical controls, timers and gas analysis device. A stress-producing unit is shown in an exploded view at the left in Fig 2. At the right is an assembled unit with a specimen in place in the lower portion; it is this part that remains in the ammonia atmosphere during a test. The upper part contains a spring, a central threaded rod, a large nut and necessary washers, pins, and so forth. Stress is produced in the specimen by screwing down the top nut against the spring, thus putting a tensile load on the central rod and so on the specimen. The wrench that turns the nut by extending through the upper cap, is seen at the upper right of the figure. The magnitude of the load is gauged by measuring from the pin that extends through the side of the tube, to a fixed point on the large flange. Measurement is made with a vernier beam caliper, shown at the right of the figure. The necessary spring compression to give a desired stress is calculated from the calibration curve of the spring and the dimensions of the specimen. The test chamber, center Fig 1, consists of a thermally insulated steel box 32 in. long by 10 in. high by 7 in. wide. A horizontal baffle reaching nearly to each end divides the chamber equally. Below this baffle are inlets for air and ammonia, a heating coil and a fan. Thus the gases are warmed and mixed in the lower level and flow past the specimens in the upper level. A thermo-regulator and thermometer project into the upper space. The top is pierced by 12 ports flanked by 3/8 in. threaded studs. A test starts when a port is opened and a unit containing a stressed specimen is thrust through it and bolted down against a neoprene gasket. The test chamber is held at 35°C. The gas train, right rear Fig 1, carries ammonia and air continuously to the test chamber. Tank ammonia passes through two reducing valves, a needle valve, a flow meter and into the test chamber. The air from either the plant compressor or a small laboratory compressor passes through wool towers and flow controls to the flow-meter. It then bubbles through water at 34°C and through a heated line to the test chamber. Four years of intensive exploration effort by Newmont Mining Corp. came to a climax May 27 in Carlin, Nevada, when local, state and federal officials joined with company officers at a dedication ceremony saluting the start-up of the firm's wholly- owned subsidiary, Carlin Gold Mining Co. Before an invited audience at the plant site, Newmont's President Plato Malozemoff and Nevada's Senator Howard D. Cannon pushed a lever and watched the new melting furnace rotate until a brilliant orange-red stream of molten gold poured forth from its mouth. Two 1200-oz bricks of bullion were poured that day, and they are the first of many that will lift this mine into the number two slot among U.S. gold producers and fourth among all gold mines on the North American continent. Although Newmont Mining first entered the gold mining business in 1929 in Grass Valley, California, the Company had operated no gold producers since the well-known Government directive L208, issued in 1942, closed down U.S. gold mines for the duration of World War 11. Now it is back in the business in a big way-a $10 million mine and plant capable of producing 200,000 oz. per year. All the gold from the Carlin operations is earmarked for the U.S. Mint in San Francisco.

Designers of semiconductor devices have been strivi,ng to resolve problems associated with Au-A1 alloys in bonded in.tercomzeclions. One approach now being- used is that of waintaining a physical seyav-atioz between the two metals in bond areas. This is accolrzplished by alunzincnz-plating a bonding area on the tips oJ the kovar leads and using alcminurn wires to join the senzicondictor device to the leads. The portion of the kovar lead which is on the externul side of the sealed package is gold-plated to provide an oxide-free surface for soldering or welding. A discoloration condition originally thought to be sinilar to purple plague, occuving in the yluled uluninur bonding area after package sealing, has been investigated to determine its efiects ipm bond integrity. Electron-micro-probe analysis determined that no1 only gold, but lead, zinc, and silicon were also present in the discolored area. A series of samples conlaining' conkrolled umonts of these inzpitrities weve prepared and subjected to a sil.zuluted sealing process. The investigations swcued that, of the contawiinants, only zinc toas detrinenlul to Lhe bond integily. The discoloration condition itself was found not to be detrimental to the bond integrity. DESIGNERS of semiconductor devices have been striving to resolve problems associated with Au-A1 alloys in bonded interconnections. One approach now being used is that of maintaining a physical separation between the two metals in bond areas. This is accomplished by aluminum plating a bonding area on the tips of the kovar leads and using aluminum wires to join the semiconductor device to the kovar leads. The portion of the kovar lead which is on the external side of the sealed package is gold-plated to provide an oxide-free surface for soldering or welding. Contamination as evidenced by discoloration of the aluminum-plated area was observed in a number of integrated circuits undergoing examination for defect characteristics which cause electrical failures.' This paper contains the results of an investigation to determine the nature of this discoloration, its cause, and its effect upon the integrity of the interconnection bond. I) THE NATURE AND EXTENT OF ALUMINUM-BOND CONTAMINATION The initial hypothesis in the investigation was that the discoloration was caused by reaction of the aluminum film with some unknown contaminants during the sealing of the hermetically sealed integrated-circuit flat package. The package is a rectangular ceramic container sealed with glass which surrounds the kovar leads as well as joining the top to the bottom. The seal is made hermetic by heating and cooling the package to devitrify the glass. In the case of the packages under investigation, the hermetic sealing had been accomplished with dry air as internal atmosphere. The apparent effect of contaminations as observed by microscopic examination was the formation of surface oxides having variations in color encompassing the whole spectrum of visible light. The contamination appeared to be related to one of the more notorious examples of these colorations, the so called purple plague.' In addition to purple plague, Fig. 1 shows the tarnish in the luster of the aluminized surface in the bond area which had been observed in many of the integrated circuits. To identify the contaminant in the bond area electron-probe microanalysis techniques were used.3 Fig. 2 shows the result of this analysis. The contaminants identified were gold, aluminum, zinc, lead, silicon, and cobalt. Fig. 2(a) is a back-scatter display of the area under study. The back-scattered electrons provide a general indication of the distribution of elements in the specimen surface. Elements with higher atomic number scatter more electrons back from the surface and are seen as light areas in the picture. The sample current, Fig. 2(b), is the amount of current conducted by the specimen as a result of electron-beam striking it and is an indication of element distribution. The Sample current is the reverse of back-scatter and complements it. Other pictures in Fig. 2 are produced by characteristic X-rays generated by the elements, allowing the isolation of the element of interest. The isolated element appears white and all other elements are dark. In this manner a comparative study provides a correlation between different surface areas and the elements which are in these areas. TURNBULL and his collaborators1,2 have developed the theory of homogeneous nucleation as applied, inter alia, to solidification of liquid metals. Vonnegut³ and Turnbull4 have shown that if a liquid metal is subdivided into small droplets a vast majority of them will undercool very considerably before solidification, generally to as low as about 0.8 of the freezing temperature on the absolute scale. The nuclei effective at small degrees of supercooling in bulk metal seem to be internal or surface heterogeneities, relatively small in number. If the metal is subdivided, those droplets that happen to contain such nuclei will solidify at a temperature not greatly below the true freezing point, but only a small part of the whole volume will be affected and the majority of the drops will under-cool to the much lower temperature at which homo- geneous nucleation occurs as a result of fluctuations. It occurred to one of the authors that an appropriate subdivision to give effective freedom from random nuclei is produced during the solidification of many alloys that contain a minor amount of a phase of low melting point, and that one might then expect marked undercooling of the distributed phase. Experimental: The alloys selected for initial study were copper with minor amounts of lead and bismuth, and aluminum with tin. In all these alloys, the major component freezes at a temperature not much below that of the pure metal, and there is little further change in constitution on cooling until the lower melting point constituent freezes in an almost pure state. Cooling curves were taken using the controlled heat flow method permitting approximate specific heats to be obtained. Chromel-alumel thermocouples were used, with the standard emf tables, since extreme precision was not needed. The crucible (3/4 in. id, 5/16 in. wall) was made of B & W K-20 insulating brick. It held about 10 cc of the alloy being investigated. The cooling rate was 2.5" to 2.9°C per min under a controlled temperature difference of 20°. Approximate specific heats were computed from the inverse rate curves together with data from a blank run and from a standard run with a copper cylinder of known heat capacity. The alloys for investigation were made from high-purity metals (99.99+pct) and cast into graphite molds. The castings were machined to fit the crucible and to provide a hole for the inner thermocouple. Cooling curves were taken after heating to a temperature about 50" above the melting point of the minor, lower melting-point, constituent. Results The lead phase in an alloy of copper with 5 pct lead did not undercool more than 3" below the melting point of lead (327°C) either as cast or after annealing to produce a new dispersion of the liquid phase. A copper-zinc-lead alloy with 23.75 pct zinc and 5 pct lead undercooled more but showed no thermal effect below 319°C. A cast alloy of copper with 5 pct bismuth undercooled to 249°C (M.P. bismuth 27l °C), but once solidification started it was completed at the same temperature. This was anticipated, since the bismuth forms a nearly continuous phase between the grains of copper, and a solid crystal nucleated anywhere would rapidly* con- sume the entire network of liquid, unless the physical continuity of the liquid were broken through volume changes, inadequate fluidity, or gas evolution. Similar arguments apply in the case of copper-lead alloys, where the lead-rich liquid forms a network along grain edges, though not grain faces. In both cases there would be a few isolated particles

The rapidly increasing use in coal mines of portable auxiliary fans, which are generally 'blowers" employed in connection with canvas tubing, raises questions concerning the hazards of such equipment, especially where the practices are opposed to established methods of ventilating face workings. Half a dozen or more coal-mine explosions and some fires have been attributed to the use of auxiliary fans; moreover, competent mining engineers have found many dangerous installations and methods of use-for example, intermittent running of the fans in gassy mines with consequent accumulations of firedamp at the faces. These facts have led the U. S. Bureau of Mines to issue this recommendation: "In the interest of safety, the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, recommends that auxiliary fans or blowers should not be used in coal mines as a substitute for methods of regular and continuous coursing of the air to every face in the mine." The comparatively recent introduction of new types of mining machines, mechanical loaders, face conveyors, and slabbing machines has encouraged the trial of new systems of face mining, all of which have for their object the rapid advance of the faces. Although the latter has certain economic advantages, in gassy mines the rate at which gas is given off is generally found to increase in proportion to the speed of advance into new territory, which in turn increases the difficulties of efficient ventilation of the face workings. Some of the systems of advance mining being tried in connection with new mechanizing methods practically compel the use of blower fans and tubing, as single narrow places arc now driven 300 ft. or more without crosscuts. Plant studies on commercial-size ingots and laboratory experiments with induction furnace heats have demonstrated that the major source of ingot cracks is associated with two conditions arising during top-pouring practice: 1—solidification during pouring, and 2—turbulence created by the impact of the stream. Methods of controlling the two factors were effective in eliminating or significantly reducing ingot cracks. BECAUSE the process of removing surface defects from hot-rolled product is so costly, the steel industry is striving constantly to develop methods of preventing, or at least decreasing, the occurrence of surface defects. Investigations have revealed steel-making and processing variables related to major surface defects, and controlling these variables has led to improvements in surface quality. However, the fundamental causes of major surface defects, such as ingot cracks, have not been determined; consequently such defects persist. At the Research and Development Laboratory of the United States Steel Corp. in Pittsburgh, a seam research program was initiated to determine the fundamental causes of certain major defects. As a part of the program, ingot cracks in killed, finegrained C1020 steel were selected for study. A cost survey indicated that, of the steels produced in sizable tonnages, carbon steels in the range of 0.18 to 0.23 pct C content require the most conditioning. Since this is particularly true of C1020, any im-provement of surface quality that might be effected from the study would be beneficial. Also, since the frequency of ingot cracks is exceedingly high for this grade, the steel would provide an excellent opportunity for a thorough study of the ingot-crack-ing problem. Why steels in this carbon range tend to exhibit more ingot cracks than do other steels was not considered in the investigation; the mechanism of ingot-crack formation was of paramount importance. Also, only the top-pouring practice was considered in the investigation, because this pouring procedure is used more extensively than others. In this study, ingot cracks are defined. as deep surface defects that sometimes are observed in an ingot prior to rolling but usually are observed during the initial stages of rolling on the primary mills. These defects may occur at any angle to the rolling direction but are most prominent in the transverse or nearly transverse direction. The appearance of ingot cracks on the rolled product varies with respect to their angle of formation and with the extent of rolling after their first occurrence. Ingot cracks are also termed "deep seams," "arrowheads," "irregular cracks," and "transverse cracks." Fig. 1 shows ingot cracks in a rolled bloom. This report summarizes: l—the exploratory investigation of commercial-size ingots; 2—the labor-atory investigations related to determining the source of ingot cracks and developing corrective methods; and 3—the plant evaluations of laboratory methods of decreasing ingot cracks. Exploration of lngot Cracks in Commercial Ingots Materials and Experimental Work: At the Du-quesne Works of the United States Steel Corp., five heats of killed, fine-grained C1020 steel were selected for the exploratory phase of the seam-research program. The heats were made by open-hearth practices that are considered most conducive to good surface quality. They were top-poured into 22x25 in. big-end-up hot-topped molds. One as-cast ingot and four other ingots rolled to the following cross-sectional sizes were set aside from each heat: 16x20 in.; 9 1/2x10 in.; 5x5 in.; and 2x2 in. The processing of the heats, from the time of charging in the open hearth furnaces to the end of the rolling operation on the primary mill, was observed carefully and recorded. The cast ingot and the four rolled ingots from each heat were examined for surface defects. The cast ingots were split longitudinally near the vertical center plane to expose the ingot structure beneath badly cracked regions. Also, a series of transverse sections was cut at about 1 in. intervals in a badly cracked area of one ingot. "The pumping of the underground water of the Butte mines is largely done from two central plants of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. The mines of one part of the mining district are served by a modern and mechanically efficient underground plant at the High Ore mine, and the remaining part by a similar one at the Leonard mine. Properties not affiliated with the A. C. M. Co. have separate pumping plants, although in several instances that company handles the water of outside companies, under which arrangement costly single plants are dispensed with. An extensive system of underground crosscuts and drifts connects these mines to both the main pumping plants, so that either may receive the water from all the mines in case there should be a failure in the other to perform its designed service.Quintuple) vertical electric pumps, 7 inches by 12 inches each, of a capacity of 600 gals. per minute under a head of 1,203 feet, are installed at both the plants. Each pump is direct connected to two 150 h-p. motors using 2,300 volts, the motors being on top of the pumps.At the High Ore plant the power cable of 400,000 c. m. is placed in a nearby shaft, the cable at present being hung from the surface to the 2,200 level. From this cable feeders of 300,000 c. m. are laid in connecting crosscuts to the pumping station at the High Ore shaft.The Leonard motors use 440 volts. The practice of building the pumps with the motors on top requires stations with high roofs, but permits the operation of the pumps if they should be submerged by an unusual flow of water."

THIS interesting application of the laws of thermodynamics to metallurgical practice has not been discussed by any writer, within my reading, except the late Prof. Gallon of Paris. In his Cours de Machines,* Prof. Callon has given a short but lucid discussion of this subject in the admirably clear style for which he was remarkable. Although the interest attached to the subject is rather theoretical than practical, I have thought that an attempt to explain the mechanical action exerted in the hot-blast oven might not be entirely devoid of utility, especially in the suggestions which it involves. The statement, that the mechanical work performed in heating the blast is, when high temperatures are produced, considerably greater than the work performed by the blowing-engine, may seem incredible to many who are practically acquainted with the subject, appearing, as it does, to conflict with the results of their experience. It is, nevertheless, literally true, and I shall attempt in this paper to prove it, and to explain why it has not rendered itself palpably manifest in practice. Before proceeding to the mathematical demonstration, it will be well to recall to mind the definitions of some terms employed by writers in mechanics and thermodynamics. The actual energy of a moving body, as defined by Rankine, is the work which it is capable of performing against a retarding resistance before being brought to rest, and is equal to the energy which must be exerted on the body to bring it from a state of rest to its actual velocity. The value of that quantity is the product of the weight of the body into the height from which it must fall to acquire its actual velocity. * Vol. I, chap. x, [§ ] 4, p. 312.
