A long the mighty Andean Cordillera, there is splendor beyond imagination-in the natural beauty of the mountains and in daring engineering and lavish investment in the mines. This is the story of the great copper mines of Chile and Peru. Each mine has a special quality which has tested the physical and spiritual resources of the founder. In the early days of the older mines, the mining engineer of song and story was more the rule than the exception. He was physically tough, ingenious and a leader of men. In the current political and social environment of Chile and Peru, the foreign contract mining engineer is still needed; but he must be a different type of man. To John J. Selters at Cerro's Rio Blanco, the principal ingredient is still "toughness," but it is "toughness of mind" that is needed. "He probably should be a teacher." The copper mines are not new. They were, almost without exception, worked by Indians (La Exotica might prove the rule), and later by the intrepid Spaniards. Modern mining began after the turn of the century. In Chile, the first of the big ones was the Braden Copper Co. founded on the El Teniente deposit. This development was followed by Chile Exploration Co. at Chuquicamata and Andes Copper at Potrerillos. These properties have been developed over the years by vast expenditures of money and a monumental amount of labor. None was free of technical problems-metallurgy at Chuqui, marginal grade of the old mine at Andes, avalanches and the great fire at El Teniente. The evolution which has brought the established mines of Chile, and the new ones coming on stream, to their present state of development is in reality the work of wonders of input-money, engineering and responsible management in an atmosphere of political stability. Without any one of these, the result would have been failure.

Analytical calculations have been carried out on the effect of casing perforations on the productivity of wells, and formulas have been derived for general types of perforation patterns. The numerical calculations, however, show that the resultant well productivity is essentially independent of the perforation pattern, but is determined mainly by the total perforation density. Thus, for example, for a density of three perforations per foot of casing, the well productivity will be cut to one third of that of the uncased well for a perforation radius of 1/8 in., and to approximately one half for a perforation radius of 1/4 in., regardless of the detailed manner in which the perforations are distributed over the casing surface. The analytical theory is also extended to include wells completed with slotted liners. It is shown that the reduction in productivity due to such liners will be relatively small as compared with that due to perforated casings. The increasingly important role being played by productivity factors of wells in determining well potentials and in the general evaluation of producing formations lends interest to the analysis of all the various factors that may infuence the productivity of a well. In recent papers1 the results have been given of theoretical studies made to determine the effect on the productivity factor of a well of the gas-oil ratio of the production and the connate water within the sand. These have served to show that both of these factors may, under suitable conditions, materially reduce the effective productivity factors below those that would be anticipated on the assumption that the wells produce homogeneous fluids. In this paper will be presented the results of the analysis of an entirely different factor influencing the productivity of a well. This refers to that resulting from the increased use of the method of completing wells by setting casing opposite all of the productive strata and then gun-perforating the particular zones of immediate interest. The practical success of this method of completion would appear to be an answer to the question as to whether it seriously reduces the well productivity or materially cuts down the ultimate oil recovery that may be derived from the producing section. Nevertheless, it is of interest to examine just how great the effect of the restricted flow channels, represented by the gun perforations, may be in increasing the over-all effective sand resistance. Of course, to the extent that the well potentials are severely restricted by proration regulations, minor reductions in well productivities are even less serious than if the wells were to be allowed to produce wide open. On the other hand, even under these circumstances there may be at least the academic interest in such calculations in being able to correct and evaluate the effect of the perforations in order to carry

THIS communication reports film-recorded low-energy (-100 kev) proton blocking patterns'-3 for hcp and wurtzite crystals. In particular the sequence of relative line intensities* (corresponding to planar blocking) of common hcp metals is compared with those of the wurtzite semiconductors CdS and CdSe. The results show that the sequence is characteristic of structure. For closely similar structures such as those of CdS and CdSe, differences of line intensity attributable to the difference in atomic number, 2, of the scattering centers may also be seen. The apparatus and techniques used in this work were identical with those reported previously in a study of cubic systems.3 All metals were given standard metal-lographic etches, and the semiconductors cleaved, immediately prior to introduction to the vacuum system. Fig. 1 shows the unit cell of the wurtzite structure, and the geometry used to obtain the [1120] and [0001] patterns of Fig. 2. The axial ratio, c/a, for all ma- terials of Fig. 2 is close to 1.63. The patterns are then directly comparable in linear dimensions inasmuch as they have been reproduced at the same overall magnification of the patterns. (Overall magnification is proportional to the product of film-to-target distance and printing magnification. THE thesis of this article is that the age of Newton is now coming to a close, and that recent scientific discoveries have in store an even greater revolution in our entire outlook than the revolution effected by the discovery of universal gravitation by Newton. The revolution that now confronts us, arises from the recent discovery of new facts, the only interpretation of which is that our conviction that nature is understandable and subject to law arose from the narrowness of our horizons, and that if we sufficiently extend our range we shall find that nature is intrinsically and in its elements neither understandable nor subject to law. The new experimental facts are in the realm of quantum phenomena. Comparatively little has been written for popular consumption about this new realm which has opened in the last fifteen years. The man in the street has been much more interested in relativity, which to him has seemed extremely interesting and revolutionary. Occasionally, however, there has filtered down to him the news that nearly all the theoretical physicists are occupied with a new order of phenomena which they find very much more exciting and revolutionary than any in the realm of relativity. For after all is said and done, the practical effects of relativity, measured in ,dollars and' cents or in centimeters and grams, are exceedingly small, and require specially de- signed experiments executed by men of the highest skill to show their existence at all. The phenomena with which quantum theory deals, on the other hand, are of the greatest practical importance and involve the simplest aspects of everyday life. For example, before the advent of the quantum theory no one could explain why a tea kettle of water boiling on the stove should not give out enough light in virtue of its temperature to be visible in the dark; the accepted theories of optics demanded that it should be visible, but every burned child knew that it was not.

Reclaiming mined land in northern regions is less difficult than reclaiming semiarid lands. In 1972, the Usibelli coal mine near Healy, Alaska, initiated experimental plots to determine the proper grasses and amounts of fertilizer. The following spring, approximately 1600 acres of land disturbed by mining were seeded by low-flying aircraft. The reclamation project was evaluated by the State of Alaska and has been adjudged successful. The information gained is being used in reviewing prospecting permits and granting coal leases on state lands.

SEVERAL very interesting articles have been written on the caving system of mining, but most of these papers have dealt separately with the slusher system or the chute and grizzly system. In this paper, a comparison will be made of the two methods, both of which are being used at the Climax mine. The mine is on the Continental Divide, in central Colorado, at an altitude of approximately 11,500 ft. above sea level. The long, cold winters, characteristic of the high Rockies, create a number of operating problems not usually found in other mining areas. THE ORE BODY The Climax ore body is just east of the Mosquito fault. This structural deformation has brought the granite on the east against the sedimentary rocks on the west. The ore occurs in an intensely altered granite and schist around a silicified granite core. The ore is in a highly fractured zone of moderate silicification. The principal mineral, molybdenite, is found in these fractures. Barren dikes of granite porphyry cut through the ore body and core with no apparent regularity. The grade of the ore is fairly uniform and gradually decreases toward the footwall core and also into the hanging-wall granite. The footwall and hanging wall are determined entirely by assays. The ore body is roughly dome-shaped, with the apex truncated at the surface. It is covered to varying depths with talus. A horizontal section of the ore body on the Phillipson level appears as an annular ellipse surrounding the footwall core. The ring of ore varies in width from 300 ft. to as much as 800 ft. The north-south axis of the core is about 1200 ft. and the east-west axis is about 1800 ft. In the ore zone, the rock is sufficiently strong to maintain reasonably large openings, and openings larger than haulage drifts usually have to be supported. The ore is cut by a great many fractures and shears and breaks into rather large blocks when caved, necessitating considerable secondary blasting. The waste that overlies the ore body breaks relatively fine in comparison with the size of the blocks of the caved ore and tends to run through the broken ore in the cave, causing dilution unless the draw is carefully controlled. MINING SYSTEMS For several years the ore was mined by the chute and grizzly system, a system that differs from that used in other caving mines only in the size of openings and equipment. The primary objectives of this cost analysis are to provide a base for future projections as well as to indicate which cost items are more volatile in their influence on overall cost of producing copper.

Curious petroleum, mining and metallurgical engineers together with oceanographers, geologists, geophysicists and those in related disciplines, some 11,500 of them, poured into the Albert Thomas Convention Center in Houston, Tex. to see, and learn. This year's successful Conference, held April 22-24 featured a technical offering of 145 papers presented at 28 sessions. In addition, a total of 500 exhibits were provided by 260 companies.

This paper deals with the calculation of the composition of the infinitesimal trace of alloy that transfers from the liquid to the solid state at each temperature during the equilibrium solidification of a binary solid solution, and which thereby enables the compositions of the coexisting liquid and solid phases to follow along the liquidus and solidus lines respectively during the cooling. A general expression for the composition (S) of the liquid-to-solid transfer at each temperature has been derived S - ZLXL(XL - P) + Zsxs(P - XS) ZL(xL - P) + Zs(P - XS) where ZL and Zs are the slopes of the liquidus and solidus lines at the given temperature, XL and xs are the composi-tions of the stable liquid and solid phases at the same temperature, and P is the composition of the alloy under considera-tion. The S equation is valid for the process of equilibrium heating as well as cooling, and may be applied to vapor-to-liquid, vapor-to-solid, liquid-to-liquid, and solid-to-solid transfers if the corresponding equilibrium diagrams are known.

The smoker, Monday evening, was an unusual success. It was held in the beautiful gold room of the Congress hotel, which was very elabo-rately decorated with American flags. More than 500 were present. The gallery was filled with ladies, who responded to the request of the song leader and helped in many ways to grace the occasion. The enter-tainment, was a varied one and was original with the Chicago Committee, which deserves great credit for the unusual success of the event. Al-though it was mostly funmaking, Dr. F. B. Cottrell and George S. Rice of the Bureau of Mines gave some very interesting talks, illustrated by flags and moving pictures, of their trip through Europe since the armis-tice. Mr. Rice's talk dealt particularly with the demonstrative coal and iron regions and Doctor Cottrell's was devoted almost solely to that part of his trip in Northern Italy where he was investigating the application of volcanic steam to power purposes. This steam is derived from boracic-acid springs and helium is secured as a byproduct.

PREVIOUS investigators have determined activation energies and have postulated various controlling mechanisms for creep.'-' Recently Barrett et 01.I5 have suggested, as the result of their work with cadmium, that the apparent activation energies for creep (AHc) above 0.5 T, could be correlated by means of activation energies for self-diffusion (AHSD) and modulus of elasticity functions: AHC = AHSD - (5RT/E) dE/dT. The wide disparity of apparent activation energies previously obtained with nickel compared to those reported for other fcc metals and the desire to test the postulate of Barrett el al. prompted this study. The as-received 17.5-mil nickel wire used during this work assayed 99.87 pct pure, Table I. X-ray analysis indicated that the wire was in a stress-re- lieved state and metallographic examination revealed an equiaxed grain size of approximately 0.01 mm. Specimens degreased in acetone and cut to 1-1/2 in. lengths were tested in a cam-mechanized constant-stress creep machine. A vacuum of at least lo-5 mm Hg was maintained during all tests. Stresses were applied when thermal equilibrium was established. When a measurable (at least 0.5 pct) secondary creep was observed, the temperature was pulsed to a higher temperature. Pulsing time varied from 30 sec at 480°C to 2 min at 1300'C and above. Slopes of creep curves were determined after the initial acceleration in the strain rate had subsided and steady-state creep was achieved. To confirm the results obtained, additional tests were performed incorporating a temperature pulsing method suggested by sherby. In this method the load was removed during temperature pulsing and reapplied after thermal expansion had occurred. No appreciable differences in results were obtained. Tests were performed over a wide range of temperature (470" to 1310°C) and stresses (250 to 17,000 psi). The expression was used to calculate activation energies. In this expression T1 and T2 are the initial and final temperatures, and el and i2 are the creep rates at T, and T2. The variation of the apparent activation energies with the mean test temperature calculated by means of Eq. [I] are shown in Fig. 1. IT IS well known that one of the cornerstones of economic theory is the so-called law of supply and demand, which, really, is a group of economic laws, one of which may be succinctly stated : A rise in price tends, sooner or later, to increase supply. It is the fear that, in the case of petroleum, a limited natural resource, a point will soon be reached when supply will not respond adequately to price advances, which in recent years has prompted a movement for oil conservation. This movement has lately taken concrete shape in the appointment of a Federal Oil Conservation Board by the President. An important aspect of the law of supply and demand is that the supply of any commodity is not an entity per se, but is a factor of price. Supply, without the specification of price, has no exact meaning; and in practice supply cannot be divorced from considerations of price. Mathematically, supply may be expressed by the formula SP, which means that supply varies with price, just as the value of 10 raised to the x power varies with x. In its technical usage, supply is the quantity of a commodity that is bought currently on the market at a given price. In the case of a natural resource, however, this quantity will eventually depend not alone on price but on the physical volume of the reserve that exists and. that, in consequence, can respond to the stimulus of price. If this reserve is fixed in size, we must sooner or later reach a point where supply can no longer respond to price in the usual degree and a permanent shortage. will develop which no advance in price can correct, except in so far as higher prices may curtail demand or improve the efficiency of utilization.

The deformation behavior of single crystals of Nb-Mo alloys has been investigated with particular reference to the influence of composition, orientation, and temperature. Strong solid-solution hardening was observed reaching a maximum at the equiatomic cotrlposition and can be attributed to the difference in atomic size between niobium and molybdenutrz. Changes in the form of stress-strain curve, as shown by a high work-hardening rate and restricted elongation to fracture, were observed at a composition of Nb-85 pct Mo and are attributed to the presence of MozC DreciDitate. Conjugate slip was only extensive in dilute alloy samples; at the 50/50 composition deformation rnainly occurred by primary slip, and the onset of conjugate slip gave rise to failure by cleavage on (100). The variation of yield stress of Nb-50 pet Mo with orientation was consistent with slip on (011)(111) slip systems. The temperature deperndence of the yield stress between -196" and 250°C was similar to that of pure bcc metals, but at a much higher stress level; no evidence for twinning %as found. IN recent years the deformation behavior of various pure metals in groups VA and VIA has received considerable attention, but surprisingly little work has been carried out on binary alloys made by mixing metals from the two groups. Such an investigation would be of interest since single crystals of metals of group VA have been shown to deform characteristically with a multistage deformation curve1"3 while a parabolic type of deformation curve has been reported for most of the group VIA metals.4'5 It has been suggested by Law ley and Gaigher~ that the difficulty encountered in obtaining multistage deformation curves for molybdenum in group VIA was possibly because of the presence of a microprecipitate of MozC which they observed even at carbon contents as low as 11 ppm. Recently a multistage deformation curve has been reported for molybdenum ," although the stages are not so definitive as those for group VA metals. The binary alloys of the particular refractory metals which have been investigated in single-crystal form include Ta-w,' Ta- Mo,' and Nb- Na." While a large amount of hardening was observed for alloys of the Ta-W and Ta-Mo systems, associated with room-temperature brittleness for alloys approaching the equiatomic composition, Ta-Nb remained ductile over the complete composition range with little or no solution hardening. Other systems have been investigated by hardness measurements on polycrystalline material and a discussion of the hardening of these alloys has been presented by ~udman." The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the deformation behavior of Nb-Mo alloys in detail, with particular reference to alloy composition and single-crystal orientation. In this way it was hoped to shed some light upon the restricted ductility of these alloy specimens. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The starting materials were obtained in the form of beam-melted niobium rod and sintered molybdenum rod of suitable dimensions. Since niobium and molybdenum form a complete solid-solution series at all temperatures, alloy single crystals were produced by melting the two constituents together in an electron bombardment furnace (EBM). To produce specimens free from segregation a molten zone was passed over the length of each rod six times in alternate directions at a speed of 10 in. per hr. Typical specimens were analyzed for interstitial impurities by gas analysis and for metallic impurities by spectrographic analysis. The results of this analysis are shown in Table I. Many of the tensile specimens were also analyzed (after testing) by scanning the gage length in an electron beam microanalyzer, from which it was found possible to predict the approximate composition of a specimen from the original proportions of each element in the EBM. The tensile specimens were made with a gage length of 0.5 in. and diameter of 0.075 in., using a Servomet Spark machine. By careful machining on the finest range for the final i hr of this technique, surface cracks could be reduced to the level where they were easily removed by electropolishing in a solution of nitric and hydrofluoric acids. The specimens were strained at a rate of 10 4 sec-' using friction grips designed to prevent accidental straining and maintain a good alignment before straining. The orientations of the individual specimens tested are shown in Fig. 1 and the corresponding compositions listed in Table I1 together with collated experimental data. 2)RESULTS a) General Deformation Behavior. The effect of composition on the room-temperature deformation curves of similarly oriented specimens is shown in Fig. 2. The yield stresses of the pure constituents, while not the lowest reported to date, were at least comparable with existing data. Although the solution hardening was large for alloys at either end of the phase diagram, and comparable with the Ta-W solution-hardening data of Ferris et a1.,8 the low work-hardening rate characteristic of niobium was sustained until a composition of Nb-85 pct MO had been reached. The Round Table on Qualities of Pig Iron, under the auspices of the Joint Committee on Qualities of Pig Iron, which is made up of members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the American Foundrymen's Association, the American Society for Testing Materials, the Gray Iron Institute, and the Malleable Iron Institute, was held at the Palmer House, Chicago, III., on Oct. 1, 1935. For the first time in its history the Institute will hold a meeting in the State of Arizona. A few years ago Arizona stood third in the copper-producing districts of the United States. Since that time, with the development of porphyry mines, the output has gone up with great rapidity until it not only is the leading district, but its output at the present tune is at the rate of nearly double the Montana output; which now stands second in the list. In connection with this development, most interesting departures have been made in methods of mining, concentration and smelting. Principles of mining and metallurgy of the greatest interest will be covered by papers which will appear in the Bulletin and be presented at Technical Sessions, while ample opportunity 'will ,be- afforded for those who go to the meeting to see all the points of interest to them. In addition, members will be well rewarded by the marvelous natural features to be seen on the trip, including the petrified forests, the cliff dwellings on the Apache Trail and the Grand Canyon of Arizona. FOr the purpose of obtaining some first-hand data in regard to the shooting clown of coal in bituminous 'nines, it was the writer's good fortune to be employed as a shot-firer for almost one year. In all, 6,020 shots were fired by him during this period. All of the work was clone in what is known as the South Main section of the No. 2 Mine of the Ellsworth Collieries Co., Ellsworth, Pa., a subsidiary of the Lackawanna Steel Co. Position of Shot-firing in the Cycle of Operations The established practice of the Ellsworth Collieries Co. calls first for the undercutting of the coal by electric chain machines across the face of the entry or room. This is followed by replacing any posts removed by the machine-runners, or the setting of new posts or timber, as may be required. After this has been done the machine cuttings are loaded into cars. Then the coal is spragged, and a shot hole drilled to the depth of the undercut. Next in order, the shot-firer loads the hole and fires the charge. The working place is then cleaned up, timbered if necessary, the sides and face squared up, and loose material taken down. The face is again ready to be undercut.

A large coal-fired power plant is to be built jointly by Pacific Power & Light Co. of Portland, Ore., and by The Washington Water Power Co. of Spokane, Wash., at a site about six miles northeast of Centralia, Wash. (Fig. 1 inset). Coal will be mined from nearby open-pit strip mines that will require cut slopes up to 250 ft in height. Coal will be removed from a seam approximately 50 ft thick, located at the bottom of the mine slopes. The coal fields are located in a geologically complex area that has been subjected to intense folding and faulting. As a result, the soils and rock comprising the overburden are highly fractured, jointed, and faulted. Classical approaches to slope stability based solely on the physical proper- ties of the overburden appeared to offer little assurance that theoretically stable slopes would remain stable. Further, the scope of the exploration program that would be required to provide a reasonable evaluation of the primary and secondary structural features from which a statistical evaluation could be developed was considered impractical. As part of the development of an overall mining plan, an experimental Pilot mine excavation, about 225 ft high and about 400 ft long at the base, was made within the coal field. This experimental cut was to provide firsthand knowledge of cut slope behavior. Our purpose at the Pilot mine was to observe the cut slopes as the excavation proceeded. To accomplish this purpose, the highwall of the experimental cut was instrumented to measure face movements and movement at depth behind the face. In addition, a detailed geologic map of the soil and rock conditions exposed in the highwall was prepared, and continual visual observations of the mine were made, noting significant events as they occurred.

The Bell Canyon member of the Delaware Mountain group has yielded quite a large number of fields in which completion and production problems have been numerous and complex. Reserves are difficult to estimate due to the problem of evaluating the formation water saturation, and the feasibility of water flooding is questionable. Extensive laboratory investigations were undertaken to determine if normally measured rock and contained fluids properties could account for many of the peculiar characteristics of the formation. A statistical study or routine core-analysis data was made. Capillary-pressure data were obtained by several techniques. Fresh-water and brine permeabilities were measured and relative permeabilities of oil, water and gas were determined. Some qualitative wetta-bility tests were performed, and the petrography of a few thin sections was studied. The results of this work are presented, with typical or average data shown for each test. The permeability -to- water characteristic of the Delaware was found to be abnormally poor. Correlations of laboratory and field performance data indicate high water saturations in much of the formation. Pore geometry is highly uniform. INTRODUCTION The Delaware formation has undergone extensive exploration and development in the past few years. This has resulted in the discovery of quite a number of fields—producing oil for the most part. A large percentage of the productive wells have produced water along with the oil. Often there is no apparent pattern for the percentage of water cut experienced. In several instances vertical displacments of over 200 ft have been established between communicating wells in which the formation appears to be about the same, yet the structurally high wells yield a much higher water cut than the lower wells. Drill-stem tests have contributed little to well completion because they nearly always show small amounts of water (usually mud filtrate), regardless of what is produced later in the life of the well. Other formation evaluation methods have had no more than limited success in indicating ultimate productivity. Consequently, predicting the type of fluid productivity of Delaware wells has been very difficult. Hydraulic fracture treatments are almost universal, and unstimulated Delaware wells have not exhibited the productivity that normally would be expected of wells with the specific permeabilities encountered. Some operators have indicated that their Delaware wells need frequent re-stimulation. The uncertainty of reservoir water saturations reported for the Delaware has made difficult the task of evaluating oil in place in the reservoirs and estimating primary recovery. The unreliability of this data also will cause feasibility studies for water flooding or other secondary-recovery methods to be problematical. Several opinions have been voiced to explain why the Delaware performs as it does. Chronically poor well completions, dynamic water and tilted water tables, capillary inequi-libria, peculiar relative permeability characteristics and oil-wetness are among the suggested reasons. The dual purpose of this paper is (1) to describe the principal rock characteristics, and (2) to present an evaluation of those characteristics so that approaches can be made to explain the irrational behavior of wells completed in the Delaware. STUDY OF ROUTINE CORE-ANALYSIS DATA A statistical study of routine core-analysis data has been made to relate fundamental rock properties and characteristics of the formation to well productivity. For the most part, well production data were obtained from operators and augmented by production data from commercial information services. Only data which were available in detail and which were considered to be accurate were used. The core data used were obtained on samples from the perforated or open interval only and, thus, may not always represent the total productive interval in a well. All the core-analysis data included in this study are from the Bell Canyon member of the Delaware and were obtained by "plug-type" techniques, as opposed to whole-core or full-diameter techniques. Porosity values were obtained by the summation-of-fluids technique, permeability values are air permeabilities corrected for slippage to an equivalent liquid permeability, and the oil and water contents were determined by means of a high-temperature downdraft retort.
