The effect of transition element binary solid-solution additions upon the recrystallization temperature of vanadium has been investigated. Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Mo, Ru, Rh, Os, and IY lower the recrystallization temperature, while Ti, Mn, Zr, Cb, Pd, Hf, Ta, W, Re, and Pt raise it. The majority of elements have their greatest effect in less than 0.15 at. pet. Both the rate of change of recrystallization temperature with atomic percent solute and the limit of initial linearity are found to Correlate with the free atom grozdnd state outer electron configuration of the sollte element. THE work of Abrahamson and Grant1 and Abraham-son and Blakeney2 has shown that the solute's elec- tron configuration appears to be a prime determinant of both brittle-to-ductile transition and recrystallization temperature in dilute binary alloys. It has also been shown by Abrahamson3 that the limit of linearity, i.e., the limit of initial linear change of recrystallization temperature with atomic percent solute, is also a function of the electron configuration of the solute in iron base alloys. Because of the systematic nature of the solute electron configuration correlation, it is to be expected that some systematic variation might be observed upon changing the solvent. Thus, this study of recrystallization in vanadium base alloys is the first of a series aimed at defining the role played by the electron configuration of solute in determining the recrystallization characteristics of dilute transitional alloys. It is impossible to escape profound regret that a career so full of the highest promise, and a personality so overflowing with all that is fine and lovable, should have been cut short at the age of thirty-one. Yet who can doubt that in a few months Perry bought with his life the fullest achievement of a life-time—a glorious part in the salvation of Liberty and Justice and Decency, indeed of Civilization itself! Recent studies of creep have made it apparent that plastic deformation may occur in metals under stresses less than the elastic limit as determined from short-time tests. In summarizing conclusions drawn from creep tests by various investigators, Tapselll said: "It is evident that if a material has a true elastic range, the elastic limit must represent the maximum stress for no creep." The presence of a definite elastic limit, represented in single crystals by a critical or threshold shearing stress, is claimed by Schmid2, Elam3 and others who have investigated the plastic deformation of single crystals. However, this "law of critical shearing stress" was determined2 from short-time tests, and the measurement of the deformation was made with apparatus primarily designed to observe large amounts of plastic deformation, not to detect elastic changes. Experimental data recently obtained with highly sensitive instruments by A. W. Hanson4 on zinc and by Podaschewsky5 on rock salt indicate that the elastic range in single crystals is considerably narrower than formerly was supposed. Moreover, a theoretical possibility of permanent deformation, under the influence of even the smallest shear stress in single crystals above a certain temperature (Td), has been developed by G. I. Taylor6. This evidence seemed to warrant an examination of the elastic limit in large single crystals by means of creep tests. The first metal chosen for examination was zinc. AppaRatus The creep-testing apparatus developed for this work is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The extensometer A is sensitive enough to detect changes in length of 3.3 X 10~6 in. per in., and yet can be used into the plastic range without injury to the apparatus. The specimen,

THE Sunrise iron mine of The Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation is in Platte County, Wyoming, about 110 miles north of Cheyenne. It is served by the company-owned Colorado and Wyoming Railway, which connects with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and the Colorado and Southern railways at Guernsey, Wyoming, a distance of 6 miles from the mine. The original Sunrise claims were staked mainly by United States Army officers and soldiers stationed at old Fort Laramie, because of small showings of copper in the Carboniferous limestones that form a horizontal capping overlying the Huronian iron ore. A small copper smelter was operated for about three years at Fairbanks, now an abandoned town on the North Platte River. As many of the copper shafts and test pits near the present Sunrise mine were deepened, they penetrated the capping and encountered iron ore or gray sericitic schist, and were abandoned. Evidence of an early interest in iron ore was found when the Chicago claim was stripped for mining. A narrow, winding crevice was discovered, which led downward 20 ft. through the capping to the underlying soft red hematite, in which a room 10 by 14 by 7 ft. had been excavated. Stone hammers and wedges and a few rusted pieces of iron were found on the floor, and the evidence is conclusive that the excavation was used up to rather recent times by Sioux Indian medicine men, to provide war paint. GEOLOGY AND ORE The Sunrise district is in the Hartville uplift, an anticlinal area in which pre-Cambrian rocks similar to those of the Black Hills and the Laramie Mountains are brought to the surface. The lowest part of the pre-Cambrian series exposed is a great thickness of pink, crystalline, Huronian dolomites with thin unstratified beds of schist and quartzite. THE studies of the mechanism of precipitation and of the resulting property changes in aluminum-silver alloys1-3 have presented some new concepts of the aging reaction-concepts that may be fundamental in establishing a complete quantitative theory of age-hardening. With both aluminum-copper and aluminum-silver alloys, thin platelike aggregates form parallel to the Widmanstätten planes of precipitation.1,4 These platelets grow in lateral dimensions and in thickness with aging time until they are thick enough to produce an X-ray diffraction line pattern. Their structure is that of a transition lattice which is coherent with the matrix, since the atomic spacings in the matrix and the precipitate are the same on each side of their common interface.2,4 The equilibrium precipitate forms later from and at the expense of the transition lattice. Since age-hardening occurs during the formation and growth of the transition lattice, the major contributor to the hardening no doubt is the stress condition in the matrix resulting from the matrix holding the precipitate in the coherent condition. The development of these stresses also appears to be responsible for an increase in the electrical resistance superimposed on the normal decrease resulting from a change in the concentration of the matrix during aging.3 The two consecutive reactions constituting the aging process are accompanied by characteristic microstructural alterations. The initial precipitation process results in the formation of a Widmanstätten figure, while the later transformation of the transition lattice to the equilibrium lattice is accompanied by a coalescence, in the case of aluminum-copper alloys,5 and by the appearance of light areas at the grain boundaries with aluminum-silver alloys showing a structural rearrangement of matrix and precipitate.3 This latter reaction is similar microscopically to the so-called "discontinuous precipitation." Possibly discontinuous precipitation is a process that often if not always follows true precipitation of a coherent lattice and during which the transformation of the coherent transition lattice to the equilibrium lattice takes place accompanied by matrix recrystallization.3 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were made using 99.97 per cent Al or distilled magnesium, with

SOME mixtures of sulphide and oxide ores from the Tintic district in Utah are of a sufficiently good grade to be shipped to the smelter without beneficiation. In mining this type of ore, however, a material tonnage of ore of a similar composition but of lower grade is obtained. It is a ques-tion of economics whether such ore should be shipped with a certainty of a small return or concentrated if that would yield a sufficiently increased return to amortize plant construction and upkeep and yield a higher rate of profit than at present. It may be assumed that the tonnage of this borderline ore is constantly increasing and that eventually it will, attain such proportions as to justify plans for milling on a relatively large scale. Under existing conditions, the producer of mixed sulphide and oxide ores is not greatly concerned about the physical characteristics of his ore or of its mineralogical complexities, since his contract with the smelter calls for payment on the basis of chemical analysis. When concentration is contemplated an entirely different picture is presented. Percentages of valuable metal content must then be con-sidered in terms of minerals, for it is in the form of minerals that recoveries are made and losses sustained. In describing the performance of a given flotation mill and reagent combination, it may be stated as a generality that a specific percentage recovery of valuable elements is made. Tech-nically, however, the concentrator is really constructed and the reagents are selected to recover the valuable minerals. These considerations must be given prominence in discussing border-line ores from the Tintic district because of their physical characteristics and mineralogical composition. Because of these peculiarities they may be justly termed complex, since their lead, silver, and copper contents are each represented by two or more minerals of different chemical composi-tion and presenting widely divergent physical properties. USING a recently developed X-ray method, reported by Schulz,2 it is possible to make a rapid survey of the perfection of a single crystal at a particular surface. This technique has the advantage of allowing a large surface of a specimen to be examined by taking a single photograph and it compares well with other X-ray methods in regard to sensitivity of detection of small angle boundaries. During the course of a survey of the perfection of large crystals of aluminum produced by a number of methods, an examination has been made of a number of single crystals produced from the melt using a soft mold (levigated alumina)." Crystals grown by this method are known, from an X-ray study carried out by Noggle and Koehler,3 to contain regions where they are highly perfect. In the present work, it has been possible to obtain photographs showing directly the distribution of low angle boundaries at a particular surface of these crystals. single crystals were grown from the melt using the modified Bridgman method with a speed of furnace travel of -1 mm per min. These were about 1/10 in. thick, 1 in. wide, and several inches long. The metal was 99.99 pct pure aluminum supplied by the Aluminum co. of America. The crystals were examined by placing them at an angle of about 25° to the X-ray beam issuing from a fine focus X-ray tube of the type described by Ehrenberg and Spear4 and constructed by A. Kelly at the University of Illinois. A photographic film was placed SO as to record the X-ray reflection from the lattice planes most nearly parallel to the crystal surface. The size of the focal spot on the X-ray tube was between 25 and 40 u, and the distance from the X-ray tube focus to the specimen (approximately equal to the specimen to film distance) was -15 cm. White X-radiation was used from a tungsten target with not more than 35 kv in order to reduce the penetration of the X-rays into the specimen. Exposure times were approximately 1 hr with tube currents between 150 and 250 microamp. The type of photograph obtained from these crystals is illustrated in Fig. 1, which shows a number of overlapping reflections from the same crystal. The large uniform central reflection is traversed by sets of horizontal white and dark lines. These two sets run mainly parallel to one another. Lines of one color are wavy in nature and often branch and run together. Large areas of the crystal surface show no evidence of these lines whatsoever. The lines are interpreted as being due to low angle boundaries in the crystal, separating regions which are tilted with respect to one another. A white line is formed when the relative tilt forms a ridge at the interface and a black line is found when a valley is formed. In a number of cases, the lines stop and start within the area of the reflection and often run into the reflection from the edge, corresponding to a low angle boundary starting from the edge of the crystal. The prominent lines run roughly parallel to the direction of growth of the crystal although narrow bands can run in a direction perpendicular to this; see Fig. 2. Although they may change their appearance slightly, the lines tend to occur in the slightly,Same place in the X-ray image and to maintain their rough parallelism when the crystals are reduced in thickness by etching. Thus the low angle boundaries can occur at any depth within the crystal. The appearance of the lines is unaffected by subjecting the crystal to rapid temperature changes, such as plunging into liquid nitrogen or rapid quenching from 620°C. From the width of the lines on the x-ray reflection, values can be found for the angular misorienta-tion of the two parts of the crystal on either side of a boundary. The values found run from 1' to 10' of arc, but values of UP to 20' have sometimes been found, e.g., the widest lines on Fig. 2. These mis-orientations are much less than those commonly found in crystals possessing a lineage structure. When a number of a and white lines occur, running in a roughly parallel direction across the image of a Crystal, the total misorientation corresponding to lines of one color is approximately equal to that corresponding to lines of the other color. The interpretation of the lines as due to low angle boundaries has been checked in a number of ways. Photographs taken with different specimen-to-film distances distinguish lines due to low angle boundaries from effects due to surface relief of the specimen. Normal Laue back-reflection photographs, taken with the beam irradiating an area of the surface showing a number of the lines, show white lines running through each Laue spot. Black lines are set to see by this method. X-ray photographs were also taken, using the set-up described by Lam-one et al.5 when the beam straddles regions giving rise to lines in the Schulz pattern, split reflections are observed within the Bragg spot. The misorienta-tions calculated from the separation of these reflections and that found from the widths of the lines on the schulz technique patterns show good agreement. During the past two or three years consumers of pig-iron have been seeking more knowledge regarding the chemical questions involved in foundry-practice. This desire has been increased by the papers of Professor Thomas Turner, of Mason College, Birmingham, reporting a series of tests made to show that silicon is a useful, rather than a damaging element when present in proper quantities in cast iron, and that by its use pig-irons and scrap, which when used alone are totally unfit for foundry purposes, may be made to give satisfactory results. Professor Turner has shown that the strength of a cast-iron depends on : 1. The amount of weakening impurities present; 2. The proportion existing between the combined and the graphitic carbon in the cast-iron. He says that the tendency of combined carbon is to increase hardness and brittleness, while graphitic carbon makes iron soft, malleable and tough; too much of either form is a disadvantage; the strength depends on the proportion. Strength being the thing most desired, irons having an excess of weakening impurities will not find a market, and therefore the only thing to provide for is the proper proportion between combined and graphitic carbon. Professor Turner shows that by a judicious use of silicon this proportioning can be accomplished exactly according to the wish of the founder; an increase of silicon changing combined carbon to graphitic, and vice versa. The presence of carbonaceous matter in gold ores presents a two-fold problem: (1) The poor release of gold from the carbonaceous matrix and (2) the uptake of dissolved gold by the carbonaceous leach residues. A critical review is presented of the published information from various parts of the world pertaining to the nature of the carbon-containing components of these ores and their different roles in the gold extraction process. Included in this paper are new results based on the authors' research on carbonaceous ores from the Prestea goldfields of Ghana. Methods for isolating and characterizing the carbon-containing materials are given and a discussion is presented of the interaction of the carbonaceous ores as well as the fractionated components with aurocyanide solutions. Emphasis is on basic physico-chemical phenomena, investigated with the aid of X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, adsorption, and electrophoretic mobility studies.

THE coal industry in Alabama, centered in Birmingham, has pioneered coal-beneficiation practice in the United States. The nature of the coal seams and mining methods employed have necessitated use of equipment and methods best adapted to the local conditions. Although all of the 30 or more coal seams now being mined in the state receive beneficiation, only the three most important producers of coking coals, the Pratt, Mary Lee and Black Creek, are discussed in detail. Nature of the seams, washability characteristics and equipment used are given as examples of the extent of work and progress in this field. The coal seams in Alabama are relatively thin and pitching, making mining difficult and expensive. Most of them are characterized by thin partings of rock or shale in the seam itself, as well as laminations of bone and rash. Mechanical mining methods have increased the occlusions from roof and floor to such an extent that nearly all the coal mined in the state must receive some treatment before it can be put on the market. During the year ending Sept. 30, 1943,1 18,129,792 tons of coal were mined in the state and 14,364,177 tons, or 79.2 per cent, received treatment. Excluding from the total the 1,223,014 tons produced by small wagon mines and the hand-picked lump coal, the amount receiving beneficiation would be more than 90.00 per cent. This is, by far, greater than in any other coal-producing state. The earliest record of coal beneficiation in Alabama was the installation in 1890 of an experimental Lung washer by Alexander Cunningham, for the Sloss Iron and Steel Co. at its blast furnace in Birmingham .2 In 1894 the Jeffrey Manufacturing Co. introduced the English Robinson washer, a combination of a hydraulic classifier and centrifugal machine. Erskine Ramsay, who has contributed so much to the coal industry, saw its possibilities as well as its mechanical defects and soon had his inventive mind at work. He added a sludge tank of his own design, and many Robinson-Ramsay washers were installed in Alabama and other states. The Stewart jig appeared in 1900, followed by the Montgomery jig in 1910 and both have found extensive use. Increased interest in this field led to new designs, such as the American, Elmore; Burke and Faust. The first Baum-type Norton jig was operated in 1930 and within the last five years six large installations of this type have been made by the McNally-Pittsburg, Jeffrey and Link-Belt Companies. Wet-washing tables were introduced in 1922 but not extensively used until recently. The two most popular types are the Deister-Overstrom and Deister Plat-O. The coal-cleaning equipment used in Alabama has been relatively simple, yet efficient, but as the amount of impurities in the raw coal has been increased by mechanical mining and labor costs have become higher, much interest has been shown in sand cones, froth flotation and

Pressures developed by the coal during the coking process have been responsible for serious trouble to many companies that operate or build by-product coke ovens. The insidious nature of this trouble is indicated by the fact that oven operators, unless they have ascertained the characteristics of the coals they use, cannot determine the existence of dangerous pressures until after the damage has been done. A rather popular misconception is that ease of pushing of the charge at the completion of the coking period indicates that no dangerous pressure has been developed, but this is far from the truth; pressures developed during the coking period are often completely dissipated by the shrinkage of the charge in the completion of coking, and so any criterion based on the ease of pushing is futile. However, methods of testing coals are available that will definitely distinguish the dangerous coals from those that are safe, and such methods have been brought to a high degree of certainty. The operator should take no risk that involves either a lack of knowledge of the behavior of coals during coking or the failure to believe that certain of the coals or coal mixtures can cause damage to the oven structure. This merely tends to minimize the problem and leads to claims that coking coals of all kinds may be carbonized with no danger of damage to the oven structure provided some particular kind of byproduct oven is used. This lack of appreciation of the true situation is in itself one of the main factors leading to damage of coke-oven structures. Coals that develop more than a certain safe pressure cannot be used in by-product coke ovens without causing damage to the side flue walls. The following paper presents a highly certain method for the measurement of the pressures developed during the carbonization of coal—a method that is the culmination of many years of work on the problem in which a number of methods for the purpose were investigated and used. While actual pressures found may appear to be small when expressed in pounds per square inch, the number of square inches in each oven wall is so large that the total pressure on the oven wall becomes an enormous load.

MARCEL R. DALY (communication to the Secretary?).-The fundamental disagreement between Eugene Coste and the writer proceeds essentially from the contradictory views they hold on the origin of petroleum. This difference cannot be bridged, nor can inorganic and organic theories be discussed here. The writer has suggested that the proper thing in such a case would be to agree to disagree. Coming to the detailed objections further presented by Mr. Coste, the writer feels that, in the main, they take their source in a wrong interpretation of the theory, and the writer is sometimes too generously invested with views that are not his own. 1. The only requirement for the theory is that the oil proceeding from organic remains be distributed in a water-laden sediment, and that this sediment be submitted to the increasing compression due to the continuous accumulation of superimposed strata, which would tend to squeeze out the liquid contents (p. 1152). This squeezing out would be further aided by the distortion of the strata (p. 1148, a). Nothing here makes impossible the slow formation of the oil, if this is considered necessary, as the piling up of the strata in the syncline would require by itself a protracted length of time, and, further, the squeezing-out process is a slow one. Possibly the formation of the oil may even continue during part of the process of distortion. But the mode of formation of the oil and the time and temperature required for it are left to the chemist to decide. The diastrophic theory, which is essentially a theory of motion and accumulation dependent on the laws of mechanics, is not directly concerned with them, provided the general points heretofore outlined be agreed upon. Perhaps it would be wise not to claim too many "eons" for the formation of the hydrocarbons, if the statement made by Sir Boverton Redwood is correct that "the coral reefs of the Red Sea are charged in places with recent petroleum, formed in that torrid climate from the swarming organisms occupying the shallow pools."1

The mines operated by the South American Development Co. are located in the Zaruma mining district of southwestern Ecuador. They are near the old mining town of Zaruma, which is the only important city in the canton of the same name. The district is situated in the upper end of a valley lying between two spurs of the Cordillera, one of which may be considered the Coast Range and the other an intermediate range. The mining camp proper, known as Portovelo, and the plant are 2.4 km. south of Zaruma, on the north bank of the Amarillo River, a tributary of the Tumbes River, which flows southwestward through Peru to the Pacific. Portovelo is difficult of access; it is reached from Guayaquil by means of river steamers and muleback. 'Embarking at Guayaquil, the route is down the Guayas River, across the Jambeli Canal, and up the Santa Rosa River to Santa Rosa, a distance of 177 km. From Santa Rosa, the road or trail follows the Santa Rosa River, then across the summit of the Coast Range into Portovelo, a distance of 74 km.—a two-day trip on muleback. The mining property of the South American Development Co. comprises 297 lode claims and 142 placer claims. The combined lode claims cover an area, roughly rectangular in shape, 9000 m. long from north to south by 4000 m. wide; the northern edge of the rectangle is about 3000 m. north of the central plaza of Zaruma. Mineral lands in Ecuador are held by virtue of an annual tax per claim paid to the central government, no surface rights being included. HiSTOry The Zaruma mine has been worked by white men since 1549, probably before that it was worked by Indians. The followers of Pizarro, led by traces of gold in the sands of the Tumbes River, followed that stream to its source, worked the gold veins that they found and established the city of Zaruma. The broad picture of petroleum refining engineering during 1934 continued to show a tendency in the direction of highly specialized processing improvements, particularly in manufacture of lubricating oil. The slowing up of the trend toward higher octane products in non-premium gasoline noticed in 1933 was definitely established as a fact by 1934 development, with just a slight indication of recession. No outstanding engineering achievements can be credited to 1934 in refinery cracking, unless the completion and successful operation of the 30,000-bbl. crude capacity combination cracking and skimming unit at Texas City, Texas, and a 20,000-bbl. similar unit in the East can be listed as such. Development and improvement was largely a continuation of previous lines of endeavor. Such trend as there is shows a continnation in the direction of very large integrated skimming and cracking units. A lessening of the cost of ethyl lead, coupled with the reaching of the octane number "ceiling," kept the subject of "reforming" low-octane gasoline into high-octane products pretty well in the background. Considerable interest, however, was shown during the year in cracking and polymerizing of refinery gases into high-octane motor fuel. The commercial development and application of this activity was greater in 1934 than during any previous year. Fair yields of gasoline of satisfactory stability and high antiknock value were reported, ranging from 2 to 8 gal. per 1000 cu. ft. of fixed refinery gas, yields varying with both the nature of refinery gas treated and processing methods. Assuming economic feasibility, regarding which there is still difference of opinion, gas polymerization offers the industry a possible outlet for its gases more in keeping with its basic chemical composition and value. The increased interest of railroads and heavy-duty truck and tractor manufacturers served to focus more attention on diesel fuels. The publicity given the Union Pacific diesel train, the Burlington "Zephyr" and others operated on special diesel fuels served to revive the intimations and fears of several years ago as to the ultimate replacement of the gasoline motor by diesel engines in even the passenger car field. ALTHOUGH a few engineers have recognized the problem of the mechanism of filtration it has never been studied in a quantitative way. A background for a better understanding will be afforded by a survey of certain fundamental principles of filtration. In recent years, authorities have become practically unanimous in saying that the actual filtering should be done, not by the cloth itself, but by a layer of solid particles deposited upon it. Thus, a cloth may be used in which the openings are considerably larger than the particles to be filtered, provided that groups of particles form an arch or bridge over each opening. This can be accomplished if the initial pressure is so low that the arch will not be broken while it is still thin. According to Wright,1 the chief advantage of this method of filtration is that the open-weave cloth does not become clogged as easily as does one of closer weave, where the fine particles often work their way into the interior of the cloth and become caught there. If the character of the material to be filtered is such that it will not form a good film, then it becomes advantageous to use "filter aids" for pre-coating the cloth with a desirable layer of solids, and the coating need be only of a very slight thickness for good results. Until the film is formed, the first runnings of the filtrate may be cloudy, often necessitating refiltering this portion. A factor which has considerable effect on the performance of filters is the concentration of solids in the pulp. According to Wright, a. high concentration of solids gives a porous cake, since the flow is then slower than with- a thin pulp. The porosity of the cake is also affected by the pressure: a high initial pressure tends to compact the cake, and the same effect results from fluctuations of pressure. In his studies of the relation between pore size and particle size, Hatschek2 observed that the particles in a pulp tend to arrange themselves with maximum cross-section parallel to the direction of flow and that this is more marked at the higher velocities. The use of blower fans and tubina- for auxiliary face ventilation is a somewhat controversial subject. Most authorities agree upon the advantages of this system over the maintenance of line brattice for dead-end ventilation. They also recognize the system's disadvantages. However, there is considerable disagreement as to the proper relation of the advantages to the disadvantages. It is the purpose of this report to present the opinions of four authorities of diversified occupation and permit the reader to form his own opinions on the subject. ORsErvers Carel Robinson is a mining engineer consultant of wide repute, who has a background of operating experience. Thomas G. Fear is a mine operator whose present position is that of chief engineer for the Hanna Coal Co. at St. Clairsville, Ohio. E. H. Denny is chief of the Coal Mine Inspection Division of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and is a very able engineer whose past experience well qualifies him to appraise this problem. Cloyd M. Smith, editor of the periodical Mechanization, is a ventilation consultant. For a number of years he was a member of the Mining Department of the University of Illinois and has studied mine ventilation for many years.
