In the analysis of comminution processes, it is necessary to have a detailed knowledge of such subprocesses as: transportation of the particles to the zone where they are stressed; the stressing of particles to a level high enough for breakage; removal of the fragments that are smaller than the limit size from the grinding zone; and prevention of agglomeration of the fine fragments. Breakage phenomena of particles is the most difficult subprocess to understand. It can be understood only by applying the principles of fracture physics to obtain information about the stress-strain field in particles which are loaded either by compression or by impact, and by using this theoretical knowledge to interpret experimental results obtained from single particle crushing studies. Two important features of the "Science of Communition" are discussed: the fracture physics and crushing under controlled conditions with special reference to single particle crushing, packed bed crushing, measurement of energy needed for fracture, fragment size distribution, and new surface area produced. The important features of these aspects are detailed, namely, energy balance of a crack, influence of environment, specimen size problems, and energy utilization in single particle crushing.

This paper represents a portion of a larger study concerning dispersion of major, minor and trace elements in wall-rock about orebodies in part of the Colorado Mineral Belt. This phase of the work pertains to the Mg/Ca ratio variations in wall-rock adjacent to orebodies in two mines, one in the Horseshoe Mining District (Hilltop mine), and the other in the Alma Mining District (Phillips mine). The two districts lie adjacent to one another, the Horseshoe District on the south and the Alma District on the north, and are commonly referred to as one, the Alma-Horseshoe Mining District. The Alma-Horseshoe Mining District is located 80 miles southwest of Denver, Colo., (Fig. 1) in Park County, on the eastern slope of the Mosquito range. The area is typified by rugged relief with altitudes of from 10,500 to 14,000 ft. The Horseshoe District is separated from the Lead-ville Mining District by the crest of the Mosquito range, with the Leadville District to the west. The Alma-Horseshoe District has been considered as peripherial to the Leadville District, and has not received the detailed attention that the Leadville District has. These two mines were selected for this study because of their ease of access; the attitude of the workings and the drill holes to the known mineralization; the similarity of the mineralization; and because the mineralization occurs in carbonates in both mines but are of different ages. In the Hilltop mine mineralization is confined to the Leadville dolomite (Mis-issippian) and is principally lead with subordinate zinc and silver. In the Phillips mine the mineralization occurs in the Peerless dolomite and shale (Cambrian) and in the Manitou dolomite (Ordovician) and is principally zinc with subordinate lead, silver,

WITH the extensive deposits of potash minerals which have been dis-covered in the southwestern states, and their rapid development, a permanent. American supply of potassium compounds is now assured. The 325-year history of the potash industry in this country has been told by H. I. Smith1, of the U.S. Geological Survey, and the more recent activities of the Survey and of American potash companies were described last year by the same author2. In fact, it may be stated that so great is the productive capacity that two mines in New Mexico and one in California are able to supply more than half a million tons of crude and refined salts over and above that produced for agricultural purposes. The era of scarcity has given way to an era of superabundance. This situation makes it desirable for the potash producer to look for other applications for his product, and it is with this in mind that the writer presents some information pertaining to present and possible future uses for potassium compounds in the ceramic industry.

IN the course of the development of the phase equilibrium diagram for the system Zr-Cr,' the structure of an as-cast allov having the composition ZrCr2 was analyzed and established to be isomorphous with MgZn2 (C14, hexagonal lattice, 12 atoms per unit cell). In a recent paper on the same system, Hayes, Roberson, and Davies' report for the ZrCr2 phase an isomorphy with MgCu2 (C15, cubic lattice, 24 atoms per unit cell). It appeared that this conflict might be resolved by assuming a high and low temperature modification for ZrCr2. That this was the case with the phase TiCr2 has recently been demonstrated by Levinger." Specimens of ZrCr2 annealed at 1200°, 1100°, 994", 900°, 834", 800°, and 700°C, respectively, and subsequently quenched were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis. It was successfully demonstrated that a transition from the MgZn, structure at lower temperatures to the MgCu, structure did occur at some temperature between 900" and 994°C. Table I lists the observed structures at the various annealing temperatures. In Table II, a summary of line spacings and intensities is given for each of the allotropic modifications. The first six lines of the MgCu2 structures have been located in the table to illustrate the close similarity between the patterns. Lattice parameters of the two modifications were calculated by a least squares solution of equations for interplanar spacings for a series of high angle lines. The results are as follows: MgZn2 type - c = 8.262 kX, A = 5.079 kX. MgCu2 type — a = 7.195 kX. It is interesting to note that TiCr2 behaves in reverse fashion yn that the MgCu, structure is the low temperature modification and the MgZn2 structure is the high temperature modification. To establish the minimum or break-even efficiency of a preparation plant it is necessary to determine the ratio of production costs per ton of run-of-mine coal to sale price per ton of clean coal. This ratio is then divided by the percentage of plant recovery. Assume, for example, that washability data indicate that 80 pct of the run-of-mine coal may be recovered as clean coal selling for $5.50 per ton. If the same plant incurs $4.00 per ton mining costs and $0.25 per ton preparation costs, the cost to sale price ratio would be 4.25/5.50, or 77.3 pct. Since the plant is capable of recovering 80 pct of the run-of-mine coal the minimum plant efficiency would be 77.3/80, or 96.6 pct. If the plant efficiency were increased to 100 pct the limit on preparation costs would be increased to $0.40. Therefore, the washing operation must be accomplished at a cost of $0.25 to $0.40 per ton and the efficiency must be 96.6 pct or higher. By plotting a curve of efficiency vs preparation costs and taking into consideration the plant cost, feed rate, operating costs, and yields of the various flowsheets it is possible to select a financially sound process. Table I classifies preparation processes according to their nature of separation. It must be remembered that what is thought to be ideal does not always prove practical under actual operation. An outstanding example is the work done on the plunger-type jig. It was determined by the law of equivalence that this unit could treat satisfactorily only sizes differing by no more than a ratio of 2. Yet these same plunger-type jigs are successfully treating sizes considerably greater than this ratio.

Production engineering has continued its rapid progress during the past year. Many engineering efficiencies long practiced in other industries are being rapidly accepted by the oil industry, and every branch of development and production work is undergoing study that is reducing the time and hazard in the drilling of wells even for greater depths, is securing better service from equipment, and is obtaining greater ultimate recovery from the reservoirs. Deviation of Drill Holes Deviation of drill holes probably has attracted greater and wider study than any other subject. Until about one year ago it had been given little attention. Some California operators knew the common magnitude of deviation, but Mid-Continent operators hesitated to believe that holes could be drilled so crooked. The great emphasis and publicity given to the seriousness of the problem resulted in the design of many instruments to record the deviation by chart or photograph. Instruments which would give the direction as well as deviation were not generally favored because of the grave fears of the legal complications which might result if the bottom of a producing well should prove to be on a neighboring lease. With all the instruments available for determining deviation, the use of etching on a glass bottle by hydrofluoric acid is still the most common method employed. The beneficial result of this earnest effort to drill straighter holes is proved by a comparison of deviation of wells completed recently with those completed over a year ago. The time of this change is arbitrarily taken as Jan. 1, 1929, as at that time the operators were aware of the deviation which usually occurred, and most of them were making some effort to reduce it. One of the outstanding achievements in connection with this country's war efforts has been the ability of our mining industry to supply from domestic sources many of the minerals of strategic importance that formerly were obtained principally from abroad. In order to meet the war-born demands for these scarce minerals, it has frequently been necessary to develop special methods for treating ores and waste products hitherto considered too lowgrade to be workable; and to improve the efficiency of older beneficiation processes. Important in this respect have been the recent technological advances in the field of froth flotation of nonsulphide minerals. Because of the refractory nature of many of these domestic ores, and, in many cases, the limited available technical data regarding their treatment, much research work has been necessary. The following examples describe the procedures and reagents used, and the results obtained, in certain laboratory flotation investigations conducted by American Cyanamid Company's engineers at the Cyanamid Ore Dressing Laboratory on ores containing such minerals as scheelite, manganese oxides and carbonate, ilmen-ite, brookite, kyanite, garnet, spodumene, mica, feldspar, celestite, fluorite, chromite, corundum, and cassiterite. In presenting these data, we wish to point out that many of the minerals listed have previously been tested, and their amenability to flotation reported, by other investigators—notably those of the United States Bureau of Mines. In some instances the procedures and reagents used in the treatment of some of the following described ores follow rather well-established lines, and with one or two exceptions, the reagents used were well known. However, many of the ores tested did not respond well to simple conventional procedures and it was necessary to adopt special methods of conditioning and desliming, reversal of the usual order of floatability of some of the minerals, multiple cleaning, etc., in order to secure separations. Except where otherwise noted, all numbered and trade-marked reagents mentioned in this paper are marketed by the American Cyanamid Co. or the American Cyanamid and Chemical Corporation. Tungsten ORes Tungsten minerals, vitally important in the war industries of the United States, rank high in the list of those we formerly had to import in order to supply our needs. Most of our domestic ores of tungsten contain scheelite as the valuable mineral. Today there are in the neighborhood of twelve tungsten operations in this country where flotation is used as the main or accessory form of benefication. It has, of Course, been known for some time that scheelite and other tungsten minerals respond to treatment by flotation.

The separation of synthetic mixtures of heavy minerals by hindered settling classification and jigging was comparatively tested in water and five organic heavy liquids, of various specific gravities and viscosities. It was found that in the hindered settling classification process the separation efficiency was directly proportional to the concentration criterion, the liquid viscosity being a minor factor. There is therefore a decisive advantage in using heavy liquids as classification medium. In the jigging process the advantage of using a heavy liquid is masked by the detrimental effect of a higher liquid viscosity, which, in this case constitutes an important factor. Considerable interest has been aroused lately by the development of mineral beneficiation techniques 1,2 using TBE (tetrabromoethane), a heavy liquid of specific gravity of 2.96, which has been made available for industrial use by a new process3 producing TBE directly from the Dead Sea brines at a reasonable price. Most of the applications investigated until now were based on the sink-float separation of minerals in a heavy liquid of intermediate specific gravity. The TBE can be conveniently diluted with many organic solvents, and thus sharp separations are possible in a wide range of specific gravities up to 2.96. Although this maximum specific gravity is sufficient on most cases for the elimination of the bulk of the barren gangue and the production of marketable concentrates, some practical problems came up for investigation in which the separation of two (or more) minerals, heavier than TBE, was required.* *Among the cases studied in the IMI Laboratorles which fall into this category we can mention: alluvial deposits, such as heavy minerals in sea sand, tin deposits, or ground coarse-grained rocks, such as pegmatites. This information has been made available to the AIME and is published here in abstract form with the kind permission of the SEG. The data is based or1 244 responses (51%) to the questionnaires circulated among 475 worldwide organizations engaged in mining geophysical operations and or research. It is believed that the data is a realistic appraisal of actual world geophysical activity.

INTRODUCTION The preceding chapters have brought us to a point in the mineral appraisal process where the composited sample values can now be used to estimate the grade and tonnage of the total mineral deposit. There are many techniques whereby drill hole composites and/or other sample data are used to assign grade and estimates to the surrounding rock. Matheron and his students have properly called such techniques extension functions. Before embarking upon a detailed discussion of extension functions, it is necessary that we take time to consider the concept of geostatistics as advocated by George Matheron who developed the "Theory of Regionalized Variables," which he published in 1962 (Matheron, 1971). The concept of regionalized variables has important application in the techniques of mineral appraisal. The position or location of a mineral sample within a deposit can be almost as important as its value. Geostatistics, when defined as "the application of the theory of regionalized variables* to the study of mineralized volumes of rock," takes into consideration the position as well as the magnitude of the value of the sample. The principles of geostatistics, as outlined by Matheron, represent a major step forward in the mineral evaluation process, because they provide a sound theoretical and practical basis for quantifying the geological concepts of (1) area of influence of a sample, (2) the continuity or lack of continuity of mineralization within the ore body, and (3) the lateral changes in mineralization according to the trend direction of an ore body and its orthogonal components; or in other words, a measure of the anisotropy of the deposit. Royle (1971) has defined the objects of geostatistic as being: "1. To estimate the most likely value of blocks of ore, or the values of the whole deposit; and 2. to estimate the errors of such estimates. This latter is important as, in addition to providing a check on unwarranted optimism, it shows where more valuation work may be needed." Because of the great importance of these concepts in mineral evaluation, an introduction into the theory of regionalized variables, and the study of a practical approach to its application is outlined here. REGIONALIZED VARIABLES VS. RANDOM VARIABLES Classical statistics, as discussed in earlier chapters, grew out of the study and application of probability theory. Probability is concerned with the outcome of random events and therefore classical statistics is built upon the theory of random variables, i.e., the probability of independent events. The validity of most statistical inferences depends upon sample randomness being assured for unbiased results. Where independent events cannot be assumed the results of statistical inference becomes suspect. On the other hand, geostatistics is concerned with variables that have position in space as well as magnitude, hence the term regionalized variables. Mineral deposits are not the only field to which the theory of regionalized variables is applicable. Many natural phenomena that demonstrate a relationship between change in magnitude and position in space are amenable to application of geostatistical techniques. In many areas surrounding the orebodies in mining districts rocks have been bleached and altered by the ore-forming solutions and have been oxidized during later weathering processes. A number of the rock-forming silic-ates have been broken down to clay, sericitic micas and chlorites have been developed, and pyrite may be found hundreds of feet outside the economic limits of the orebody. These halos of altered ground are prime targets used by geologists in many districts to delineate promising sites for drilling. Both in the field and in the laboratory it is often difficult to map these mineralogical changes in the halos in detail without numerous petrologic examinations. The secondary minerals are generally fine-grained, and since conversion of one mineral to another is often progressive, many alteration processes have not proceeded to completion (feldspars to clay to sericite mica). Qualitative detection of these minerals is difficult; quantitative determination is frequently impossible.

My. first paper, read at the Cobalt Meeting of the Institute,1 July, 1907, dealt with the behavior of a small Wilfley table when concentrating galena from quartz, the table being fed with natural products, with sized products; and with classified products. Since galena, having a specific gravity of 7.5, is among the heaviest minerals ordinarily concentrated by Wilfley table, it was desirable that a similar set of tests upon a mineral of, lighter weight should be made. Chalcopyrite, of a specific gravity of 4, would have been the best mineral for this purpose, on account of its great importance as an economic mineral, but in carrying out the test, however, I was obliged to content myself with a cupriferous pyrite, the specific gravity of which was 4.68 and the contents in copper 8.80 per cent. Through the kindness of Mr. H. 0. Cummins, this material was obtained from Shasta, Cal.,in very pure, clean, homogeneous condition. It was broken by rolls to 2 mm. in size, taking care to make a minimum of slimes. The quartz used to mix with it was pure, white, New England quartz, broken in the same way to the same size. In studying the accompanying tables, it should be borne in mind that the material concentrated was of low copper-content, and in many cases the quantity fed to the machine was 1 kg: or less.. As a consequence of the smallness of the 'quantity treated it was very difficult to adjust the table and get it in condition to do its best work before the feed became exhausted, and for this reason many results were obtained which appear irregular.

Tests carried out with both kaolin and silica slurries show that flocculants of the polyacrylamide type can be used to improve the thickening performance of hydrocyclones. This thickening improvement demonstrates that contrary to previously held theories, flocs can be formed which are capable of resisting the shear forces in a hydrocyclone. For the 1.25-in.-diam cyclone used, optimum thickening occurs when the flocculant solution is injected into the slurry stream at or near the feed inlet. Hydrocyclones offer many distinct advantages over gravity thickeners. These advantages include simplicity, low initial and operating costs, small space requirements, and flexibility of operation. In spite of these advantages hydrocyclones have not been widely used as thickeners. The main reason for their lack of application is that hydrocyclones are unable to efficiently remove semicolloidal particles (less than 5 microns) from the suspending solution. In gravity thickeners, the fine particles can be induced to form particle aggregates, or flocs, which have the settling characteristics of large particles. In the hydrocyclone, however, it was always assumed that the existence of shear would prevent the formation of flocs.1-3 Thus, if no floc structure is retained, the thickening hydrocyclone must be designed so that its separation size is below the size of the smallest particle to be recovered. To obtain a very small separation size requires the formation of very high centrifugal forces, which necessitates the use of small-diameter cyclones. Small hydrocyclones have, in turn, very low throughput capacities which render them impractical for many industrial thickening applications. Thus, if the effects of flocculation cannot be utilized, the usefulness of hydrocyclones as thickeners remains limited to pulps which contain no very fine particles. It is well established that most substances acquire a surface electric charge when brought into contact with an aqueous medium. The repulsive interactions between similarly charged particles act to prevent flocculation. One method of flocculating a dispersion is to neutralize the repulsive surface charges by the addition of an electrolyte. The reduction of the electrostatic surface charge (Zeta potential) then permits the universal van der Waals attractive forces to operate between the atoms of the various particles and form particle aggregates. The lime additions used by thickener operators promotes flocculation by this mechanism. A second method of flocculating a dispersion is by the addition of long-chain macromolecules. In this case flocculation is brought about by a bridging mechanism in which the molecules are adsorbed with part of their length on two or more particles, thus forming a molecular bridge between the particles.4,5 The molecules also form bridges between themselves when a single particle is bonded to several polymer molecules. The type of bonding between the flocculant molecule and the particle may be hydrogen bonding, chemical bonding, or electrolytic attraction.6 The flour and glue which are used as thickener additives are believed to promote flocculation in this manner. In the past decade synthetic long-chain polymers with extremely high flocculating capabilities have been developed. The flocs formed by these new polymeric flocculants are larger and more shear-resistant than those formed by the presence of electrolytes.7 The advent of these flocculants raises the question: Are the flocs formed by these synthetic polymers stable enough to resist the liquid shearing forces in a hydrocyclone? The investigations reported in this paper were carried out in order to provide some answers to this question. EXPERIMENTAL WORK For the bulk of the test work a 5% slurry of commercially available kaolin with an average particle size of 5 microns was used. An initial evaluation of the available flocculants was carried out to determine which flocculant formed the most shear-resistant flocs. A combination of the techniques used by Healy7 and Booth8 was used for this purpose. This initial study revealed that the neutral high-molecular weight polyacrylamides produced the most shear-resistant flocs. One of these flocculants, Separan MGL*, was selected and then used for all the hydrocyclone tests. The flocculant was dissolved in water and added to the hydrocyclone as a dilute solution.

Natural carbon dioxide has recently been exploited in the United States in consequence of oil and gas developments in the Western States and the growing demand by transcontinental and transoceanic shippers for solid carbon dioxidc. The discovery by drilling of commercial deposits resulted in consideration of its geographic and geologic distribution and occurrence. Its wide distribution in nature is evidenced by its occurrence in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere. The question of origin of carbon dioxide involves consideration of theories similar to those concerning natural hydrocarbons, although available evidence favors an inorganic rather than an organic source. Areas favorable to development of commercia1 production appear to be those in proximity to igneous rocks or in the vicinity of decadent volcanic activity, where, it has long been known, the gas is evolved either free or dissolved in the waters of fumaroles, geysers or mud pots. Structure contour maps are presented showing the Wagon Mound anticline in New Mexico and the Farnham anticline, Utah. A well drilled on the latter supplies gas to a 20-ton plant manufacturing solid carbon dioxide at Wellington, Utah, on the Denver and Rio Grande R.R., whence it is shipped to surrounding territory and to the West Coast. Before funds are invested in a plant for the manufacture of liquid or solid carbon dioxide, whether supplied by wells or springs, an effort to ascertain the volume of gas available is advisable. The use of present methods of estimation of gas reserves with modifications to account for the quantity absorbed by any water present in the producing formation is recommended. The Farnham anticline is used as an example and computations are made of the probable volume of gas originally present in the structure. No attempt was made to compute reserves in the Niland area, California, for the reason that in such areas it is believed the volume is indeterminate. Introduction Carbon dioxide, in liquid and solid form, has found a wide variety of uses other than its primary application in carbonating beverages. It is now used in more than 40 different ways, ranging from cooling or freezing to use in gas or liquid form for mechanical purposes, chemical industry, explosive, fire extinction, and tire manufacturing. Undoubtedly the chief supply of carbon dioxide is obtained from industrial plants or artificial sources and until recently natural deposits of the gas have received little consideration. A well drilled on the latter supplies gas to a 20-ton plant manufacturing solid carbon dioxide at Wellington, Utah, on the Denver and Rio Grande R.R., whence it is shipped to surrounding territory and to the West Coast. Before funds are invested in a plant for the manufacture of liquid or solid carbon dioxide, whether supplied by wells or springs, an effort to ascertain the volume of gas available is advisable. The use of present methods of estimation of gas reserves with modifications to account for the quantity absorbed by any water present in the producing formation is recommended. The Farnham anticline is used as an example and computations are made of the probable volume of gas originally present in the structure. No attempt was made to compute reserves in the Niland area, California, for the reason that in such areas it is believed the volume is indeterminate. Introduction Carbon dioxide, in liquid and solid form, has found a wide variety of uses other than its primary application in carbonating beverages. It is now used in more than 40 different ways, ranging from cooling or freezing to use in gas or liquid form for mechanical purposes, chemical industry, explosive, fire extinction, and tire manufacturing. Undoubtedly the chief supply of carbon dioxide is obtained from industrial plants or artificial sources and until recently natural deposits of the gas have received little consideration. The purpose of this paper is to state briefly the inspection requirements of the Bureau of Ordnance, the specifications governing the inspection, and the physical and chemical properties of the steel used in the construction of ordnance for our Navy. It would be of interest to evoke discussion on points in these specifications which do not tend to insure the production of the very best material for the purpose intended. In other words, what requirements of our specifications are useless and also in what manner are our specifications deficient? It might be well at the start to answer the first criticism of this paper which will probably be made, and that is that the title does not agree with the subject matter. Considering metallographic work as covering only the macroscopic and microscopic examination of metals, this paper will have gone beyond the subject; but it is believed that a broader definition of metallography is that it is the study of the relation of the internal structure of metals and alloys to their composition and to their physical and other properties. The internal structure of steel is dependent on its physical and its chemical properties. These physical properties are dependent on the chemical composition and the mechanical and thermal treatment of the steel. So it seems that this subtitle would not be entirely necessary and that the title " Metallography of Steel for Ordnance Purposes" would cover a study, not only of what we can learn of macroscopic and microscopic examination, but broadly of the whole subject of the specifications, the fulfillment of the requirements of which produce the structural conditions revealed by macroscopic and microscopic examination. I will refer but briefly at the beginning to the microscope and its uses in our inspection. It is only very recently that the Bureau of Ordnancc has furnished certain of its inspection offices with a portable Tassin outfit for the microscopic examination of steel. Since that

This .study defines the basic mechanism of the mis-cible displacerrzent of oil and writer from porous Medici by various water-driven alcohol .slugs. Three distinct alcohol slug processes were .studied. Considerable data concerning the quanity of alcohol required for oil recovery were also obtained. All data were obtained in a 1-in. diameter, 100-ft long, unconsolidated core. The porosity of this system was 35 per cent. and the permeability was approxitrlately 4 darcies. Total core pore volume wax 5,716 cc. All displacements were conducted at a constant injection rate of 5 to 6 cc//min, which corresponds to a frontal advance of 5 ro 6 ft/hr. The first portion of this paper is concerned with 111 use of one alcohol—isopropyl—a\. the slug material. Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is completely miscible with both oil rind water; however, miscibility of the threc-component systems, oil-water-IPA, requires a relutively. high concentration of IPA. Hence, the displocement is not of the misoible type unless the IPA concentration is maintained above some critical value. A slug of IPA equal to only 13.5 per cent of the pore volume was jound to be sufficient to obtain complete recover?, of residua1 naphtha. In later studies two distinct process variations were developed. The firsr of these utilized methyl alcohol (MA) and IPA as slug materials. It was shown that methyl alcohol may he substituted for IPA at the front and rear of the slug with no loss of oil recovery. A .slug of 4 per cent MA-4 per cent IPA-4 per cent MA was sufficient for complere oil recovery. Because MA is considerably cheaper than IPA, this represents an important step toward economic application. A .second process variation used normal butyl alcohol (nBA) and MA as the composite slug, the nBA segnzent being injected first. This technique requires the smallest total slug size (approximately 10 per cent) of all processes studied. The high cost of nBA, however, precludes commercial application. It is possible that this basic process, subject to changes of alcohol type, may lead to a commrercicil process. INTRODUCTION Within the last 10 years, considerable study has been devoted to the general mechanics of miscible phase dis- placements in porous media. These studies have. in general, dealt with two-component displacernent. All reported field trials to date have been modified gas drives of one type or another. These utilize either lean gas at high pressure, rich gas at lower pressure or an LPG slug. The irreducible water content of the reservoir remains immobile during these processes. Although these techniques hold great promise. certain drawbacks do exist. Poor areal sweep efficiency, inherent in any displacement having a highly unfavorable mobility ratio, is one disadvantage. Furthermore, the miscibility of all processes which use gas is dependent on pressure. These pressure limitations may prohibit application to shallow reservoirs. There are also many areas where large quantities of LPG and natural gas are not readily available. These factors emphasize the need for improved techniques. The alcohol slug process is also a miscible-phase displacement process. It differs from the previously mentioned two-component techniques, however, in that both the reservoir oil and water are displaced by the slug. This behavior is a consequence of the miscibility of certain oil-water-alcohol systems. In the simplest case, a relatively small volume (slug) of an alcohol (such as isopropyl) is injected into the system. Water is then used to drive the slug through the medium. Thus. three components—-alcohol. oil and connate water-—exist at the front side of the slug. Miscibility is obtained at some alcohol concentration, this being dependent on the solubility of the particular system. Miscibility is maintained within the slug until the alcohol concentration falls below that value required to maintain miscibility. When miscibility is lost, the process reverts to a water flood. Certain inherent benefits of this technique are apparent. High pressures are not necessary to obtain miscibility in these liquid systems. Furthermore, water is a more desirable driving agent than gas because of the improved mobility ratio and the attendant improvement in areal sweep efficiency. The main disadvantage is, of course, the relatively high cost of alcohols. The use of an alcohol slug to recover reservoir oil is not a new idea." ' However, this process has received only limited study, presumably due to the lack of industrial interest caused by the seemingly prohibitive cost of alcohols. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism of the displacement of oil and water by various alcohol slugs and to develop process modifications aimed toward possible commercial application.
