THE history of the production of sulfur from salt domes in Louisiana and Texas originated with the operations of the Union Sulphur Co. at Sulphur, La., followed by the Freeport Sulphur Co. at Bryanmound, Tex. Including the present development of Grande Ecaille by the Free-port Sulphur Co., which constitutes the tenth dome to be equipped for the production of sulfur in the Gulf Coast, less than 10 per cent of all the known domes have proved to contain sulfur in commercial quantities. The Grande Ecaille salt dome is in the tidal marsh of the Mississippi River delta in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. It is 10 miles southwest of the right descending bank of the river approximately 45 miles below the city of New Orleans and is within 4 miles of the shore line of the Gulf of Mexico.

An improved method for solving dynawzical dislocation problems using a digital computer is described in this paper. Interactions between two distinct types of dislocations were studied: attractive screw dislocations; and Lomer lock forming dislocations. One dislocation is positioned in the lattice and is initially at rest, while the other dislocation is moved through the lattice on an intersecting slip plane at a constant velocity in the range 0.5 to 0.999C. (C is the transverse velocity of sound.) The results obtained from these computations indicate that screw dislocations account for a small fraction of the total strain over a wide portion of the range of velocities studied. They further indicate that mixed dislocations mainly repel other dislocations in the neighborhood of the active glide plane. From this a possible explanation for cell formation is put forth. The density of Lomer locks expected to exist after a strain of 0.2 was found to be 1.4 x 106 cm-2 which is in good agreement with indirect experimental estimates. IN the past, predictions of favorable or nonfavorable dislocation reactions were based on the associated changes in elastic strain energy. Such considerations take no account of the probability of the two dislocations coming into contact to react. Venables1 was the first to approach these probabilities by considering the interactions between two moving screw dislocations on perpendicular glide planes. Because of the restrictive types of dislocations and glide plane geometry employed, his results have limited application to metallic crystals. The work to be presented here develops a general approach to solving dynamical dislocation problems; either dislocation-dislocation interactions, presented here in detail, or dislocation interactions with any other suitably defined stress field. Two types of dislocation-dislocation interactions common to face centered cubic (fee) materials are considered: those between pure screw dislocations of opposite sign on intersecting slip planes and those between mixed dislocations on intersecting slip planes, that can react to form a perfect dislocation. This latter reaction, referred to as the Lomer reaction, produces a locked product dislocation that finds it energitical favorable to disassociate into two Shockley partials and a stair-rod dislocation. This partial configuration known as a Lomer-Cottrell (L-C) lock plays a major role in work hardening of fee crystals. seeger2 names the L-C lock as the prime contributor to Stage II hardening while Kuhlmann-wilsdorf3 and Meakin and Wils- dorf4 also state that it is a significant contributor to work hardening. However, with a few notable exceptions,5-7 direct observations of the Lomer lock and the L-C lock by electron transmission microscopy are scanty, and even these are subject to other interpretations.5,6 In a study of partial dislocations present in austenitic stainless steel, whelan8 did not observe any L-C locks at the head of pile-up groups. This result contradicted existing work hardening theories and led him to postulate an alternate theory based on the stress required to break away dislocations intersecting a pile-up group, from their stacking fault nodes. Due to the importance of the Lomer reaction in producing L-C locks which are an essential feature in current work hardening theories and because there exist no data giving direct quantitative values for the density of locks, and because there has even been some doubt expressed as to whether this important reaction occurs at all, a study of the dynamic behavior of the mixed dislocations which form the Lomer lock was undertaken. Due to their ability to cross-slip with relative ease, screw dislocations play an important role in the deformation of fee crystals. For this reason, the second type of reaction considered here is between screw dislocations of opposite sign. In addition, computations in volving screw dislocation interactions are relatively simple, thus providing a convenient check on the cornputational scheme employed. DEFINITION OF PROBLEM The force exerted on a dislocation due to a generalized stress field is given by the Peach and Koehler9 equation: Here t2 and b2 are respectively the tangent and Burgers vectors of the dislocation, and T1 is the stress dyadic defining the local stress field. The stress field may be externally applied or generated internally by the presence of a lattice defect, such as a second dislocation, as is the case in this work. Frank10 has shown that an equivalent momentum, P, of a screw dislocation can be defined by: Here, EST is the total energy of a screw dislocation and ESo is its rest energy. The left side of Eq. [2] is the time derivative of momentum and the right side is the position derivative of the energy due to the dynamical nature of the dislocation. The total energy of a dislocation is the sum of the potential and kinetic energies. Weertman11 has developed the expressions which were used here; these give the potential and kinetic energies of uniformly moving edge and screw dislocations in an isotropic medium.

Scale is a broad term which includes many types of mineral deposits which have limited solubility in water. These mineral components precipitate when combinations of scale-forming cations and anions exceed their solubility. Scale deposits are tightly bound to each other and to the metal surfaces of a water system. Precipitates that do not readily adhere to each other or to metal surfaces are known as sludges. Sludges are easily removed from a system by flushing. For example, a sludge is formed in the internal treatment of boiler waters with orthophosphates where the calcium is purposely precipitated as hydroxyapatite. Calcium phosphate would have a tendency to adhere to the boiler tubes except for the addition of tannins or lignins. These sludge conditioners maintain the precipitated calcium phosphate as a sludge which can be readily removed by boiler blowdown.

Hunt Medal and- Prize, The J. E. Johnson, Jr., Award, the James Douglas Medal, and The Lewisohn Platinum Prize to senior members. ROBERT W. HUNT MEDAL AND PRIZE The partners of Robert. W. Hunt established a fund which was presented to the Institute at a fitting ceremony on May 27, 1920, to establish an annual medal and a sum of money to be awarded under the following rules: 1. The award shall consist of two prizes; first of a gold medal, second of a sum of money; a certificate to accompany each prize. The money prize shall not be awarded to a member over 40 years of age, but under unusual circumstances, both prizes may be allotted to one person provided that he is not over 40 years of age. In general it will be understood that the Committee shall award the money prize to the younger men, rather than the medal. 2. The awards shall be made not oftener than once a year to that person or persons contributing to the Institute the best on al paper or papers on iron and steel. The scope of the term "iron and steel" shall determined by the sub-committee considering the awards. In general, papers dealing with the practical side of the subject have preference over those dealing with the theoretical side in recognition of the fact that Captain Hunt's main contributions to the industry have been in the improvement of production and quality of material. 3. A sub-committee of three to five, including the Chairman of the Iron and Steel Committee, shall be appointed by the Iron and Steel Committee annually to adjudge the award subject to approval. 4. The awarding committee shall submit its report to the Iron and Steel Committee at its October Meeting, and the award be certified to the Secretary of the Institute in time to permit the presentation to be made at the Annual Meeting of the Institute. 5. The recipient of the award shall be designated "The Hunt Medallist." This prize is administered by the Iron and Steel Committee. J. E. THE world production of copper for the first eight months of 1927 shows an increase of 3 per cent over the same period in 1926. Since February of this year, however, production has been considerably curtailed. The United States reduction in the last four months has been offset by the increased South Ameri-can and Belgian Congo production. The United States is now producing 58 per cent of the world production, Chile and Peru 17.3 per cent, Belgian Congo 5 per cent. In 1926 the United States produced 54 per cent, Chile and Peru 16.3 per cent, Belgian Congo 6.3 per cent. Before hostilities between the colonies and Great Britain began in 1775, most of the coal used in the northern colonies undoubtedly came from England, with some supplies for New England coming from Nova Scotia; in New York and Philadelphia the supply came from England with some from the Virginia mines. Table 4 shows data obtained from the Public Records Office, London, for the years 1768-1772. This table supplements Table 3, which records only a few shipments from Richmond in 1768 and 1769; as there was no coal shown in imports coastwise in 1769 in Table 4, and only two small shipments in 1769 in Table 3, there may have been a cessation of shipments then, for some reason not now known. In Table 5 are incorporated all the data in the first two, with a few earlier years, and an attempt is made to estimate the amount used during the period by allowing for coal exported. With the small total tonnages a carryover from one year to another makes a large difference in the annual figures, but over the period the result may be fairly indicative of the amount of coal used before the Revolution. According to present day ideas the quantity of coal used during that war was very small, but apparently it was badly needed for the manufacture of the small amount of munitions made in those troublous days. As Philadelphia was the leading city along the Atlantic coast, and as the southeastern part of Pennsylvania was the leader in making iron, as well as making rifles, it is natural that the first call for coal came from there. At first, procuring supplies such as coal, powder and sulphur was handled by a Committee of Safety, which later became a Council of Safety and later this committee's functions were turned over to a Board of War, functioning with the military organization of the colony. . The organizations of the several colonies were slightly different, but Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia followed this scheme generally. Later in the war the Congress began to make arms for the troops, and it is difficult now, with the few records available, to tell when the state functions ceased and those of Congress began. Midland and Isabella counties have been the centers of activities for the year 1932. The major part of the 6,967,000 bbl. produced during the year was obtained from the old Mt. Pleasant field and the Eastern Extension field. The total production to the end of 1932 for Michigan, from all fields since discovery, is 20,679,600 bbl. Production in the Eastern Extension field was obtained from Dundee limestone of Devonian age, at a depth of about 3600 ft. As a result of the year's activity in this area, the limits of the Eastern Extension have been defined. No new fields have been discovered. A number of prospective areas have been drilled and condemned by dry holes. Probably the most outstanding development of the year was the discovery of oil on the Yost farm, in sec. 35 of Greendale Township, Midland County, by the Pure Oil Co., in the early part of December. Production is from the Dundee limestone similar to that in the Eastern Extension but is 4 miles south of that area. The first well has averaged about 500 bbl. per day since completion. It is near the center of a solid block held by the Pure Oil Co., so that rapid development due to competitive drilling is not expected. During the early part of the year the Midland-Isabella area was under proration, but on May 17 proration restrictions were discontinued and remained so until the end of the year. While the Eastern Extension saw the principal activity, some work was done in other fields of Midland and Isabella counties, but very little new production was added. The Vernon field on the north showed a slight increase in production over 1931. The Leaton field decreased. The well in Porter Township, Midland County, is still kept in the production ranks but very little drilling was done in that area. The old Saginaw field, Saginaw County, still remains the only spot in the state where commercial production is obtained from the Berea sand. It showed a slight decline over 1931 with no new producers for the year. The Muskegon field on the west side of the state showed a considerable decline over 1931, but owing to the rejuvenation of some wells by the use of acid this drop was not as great as might have been expected. Only two new producers were drilled in that area.

THE Duquesne property of the Callahan Zinc-Lead Co. is about 20 miles east of Nogales, in southern Arizona. One mine is near the mill, but most of the mill feed is hauled in by truck from a number of small mines. The same sulphides are found in all the ores, in general, but the amounts vary considerably. All ores contain silver, copper, lead and zinc minerals but one mine ships ore high in silver and lead and low in copper and zinc; while another mine ships ore high in copper and zinc, and low in silver and lead. The common sulphides are galena, carrying most of the silver; chalcopyrite; sphalerite, carrying iron in solid solution; and pyrite, in a gangue consisting of limestone, quartz and garnet. Mineralization, is fairly coarse. At the present grind of about 66 per cent minus 200 mesh most of the sulphides are liberated. A small amount of chalcopyrite is locked up with the sphalerite and cannot be liberated at an economic grind, and the copper carried into the zinc concentrate with the sphalerite accounts for the comparatively poor recovery of copper in the copper-lead concentrate. PRODUCTION OF TWO CONCENTRATES The milling problem, which was complicated by the extreme variation in the grade of the feed, was first attacked with the idea of producing a silver-copper-lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate, both with satisfactory grades and recoveries. By February 194I, it was felt that these objectives had been attained, when the grades of the various products and the recoveries were as shown in Table I. [ ] A rough outline of the flowsheet and reagents used is as follows: Minus ¾ -in. feed to a 7-ft. by 36-in. Hardinge ball mill working in closed circuit with a 36-in. Wemco classifier. The classifier overflow passes to the second cell of an 8-cell bank of No. I8 Special Denver Sub-A flotation machines (volume, 22.5 cu. ft. per cell). A rougher concentrate is removed from the second to the fifth cells inclusive, and returned to the first cell, which is the cleaner. A scavenger concentrate is removed from the sixth, seventh, and eighth cells, and returned to the third cell. Consump-

MR. BIRKINBINE'S description of the bad working and sudden chilling of the Warwick Furnace last summer, seems to me quite phenomenal in blast-furnace practice. During my connection with the management of blast furnaces for many years, in the anthracite, coke, and raw-bituminous coal districts, such a case has never come under my notice. It seems to me that the scaffold in the zone of fusion could not have established itself (so that the whole power of the engines, with a blast pressure ranging from 12 to 18 pounds per square inch, could not penetrate), unless the furnace was previously badly scaffolded and bridged in some of its upper sections, from 15 to 30 feet above the hearth level, either in the zone of chemical action or the beginning of the zone of fusion. Such a "barrier to the upward gaseous currents would cause a suspension of combustion which may have superinducedd the scaffold that is assumed to have existed in the zone of fusion. It is Difficult to conceive' that an agglomerated mass almost across the section of the lower bosh should have formed all at once, if the furnace was free and porous for the reaction of the gaseous currents above. Therefore, I think, the Warwick furnace was by no means in as free, open, and fine internal condition at the time the trouble commenced as the description of its regular working would lead us to suppose. I do not question the accuracy of the statements relative to the output of iron, etc. I merely claim that the phenomena., as described, could not have been almost instantaneously developed, unless there had been an incipient seaffold and lodgment above the zone of fusion. The White River Shale Project has completed a 5,000-foot production decline and a 30-foot diameter 1,010-foot deep shaft into its oil shale orebody in the Uinta Basin of eastern Utah. This is the first major underground access into these Green River deposits in this basin and provides an opportunity to establish and monitor in-situ rock mechanics stations as input to the mine engineering and planning of this large opening, high-tonnage mine. This paper discusses the history, mine development, and rock mechanics planning for this project.

SEARCH for a consistent theory to explain the relationship between energy input and size reduction in a comminution process has accumulated, over the years, an enormous amount of plant and laboratory data. Although some correlation of these data has been possible for purposes of engineering design and for the advancement of research in fracture, there is still great need of a means of predicting behaviour of a solid when it is reduced in size by mechanical forces. The best known hypotheses proposed to describe the energy-size reduction relationships in crushing and grinding stem from a common origin. The present article analyzes problems of comminution in the light of the precepts of this origin. Its object is to reconcile points of difference between these well known hypotheses and to present relationships more widely applicable to comminution studies. Theoretical Considerations: Most existing relationships between energy and size reduction of a brittle solid stem from a single, simple, empirical proposition.&apos; Although this proposition can be demonstrated by observation and experiment, no theoretical derivation is yet possible. Mathematically, the proposition may be stated as follows: dE = -Cdx/xn [1] where dE = infinitesimal energy change, C = a constant, dx = infinitesimal size change, x = object size, and n = a constant. Eq. 1 states that the energy required to make a small change in the size of an object is proportional to the size change and inversely proportional to the object size to some power n. No stipulations are placed on the exponent n in either magnitude or sign. In 1867 Rittinger2 postulated that the energy required for size reduction of a solid would be proportional to the new surface area created during the size reduction. As far as can be determined there is as yet no physical basis for Rittinger&apos;s hypothesis. Rittinger&apos;s hypothesis can be stated mathematically as follows: E, = K(oa-a-0 . [2] Er = energy input per unit volume, K = a constant, <ti = initial specific surface, and o2 = final specific surface. In the size reduction of particles of size x, to particles of another smaller size, x2, Eq. 2 becomes the well known relation: ET = K&apos; {l/x2-l/xx) [3] where K&apos; is a constant. Eq. 3 may be arrived at from the proposition given in Eq. 1 by integrating and by assigning a value of 2 to the exponent n. J dE = J - C dx/x2 E = Kt (1x - 1x) where K&apos; = C. In 1885 Kick3 proposed the theory that equivalent amounts of energy should result in equivalent geometrical changes in the sizes of the pieces of a solid. For example, if one unit of energy reduced a number of equal-sized particles to particles of one half the size, then the same amount of energy applied to the particles resulting from the first test should result again in a size reduction of one half or a final size one quarter the original size. The Kick concept may be expressed as follows: Ek = K" log x1/x2 [41 K" = a constant and E, = energy per unit volume. Application of Kick&apos;s and Rittinger&apos;s laws to comminution has met with varied success. Gross and Zimmerley4 and Piret5 have shown that Rittinger&apos;s equation applies under certain conditions of experimentation. Walker and Shaw6 express the belief that in metal turning and shaping and in grinding of both metals and minerals the production of very fine particles (less than lP) follows Kick&apos;s hypothesis, whereas Rittinger&apos;s concept is valid for the size reduction of coarse particles. For the practical case of crushing and grinding, however, neither of the above hypotheses has received general acceptance. Bond&apos; has lately proposed that since neither Kick&apos;s nor Rittinger&apos;s hypotheses seem correct for plant design work, an energy-size reduction relationship somewhere between the two would be more applicable. The Aldrich Mining Go. holds under lease from the Illinois Central R. R. Co. about 14,000 acres, in the east half of Township 12, Range 12 W., in Marion county, Alabama, and owns other lands, of which about 1,000 acres adjoin this leased tract, making a total area of about 15,000 acres, all of which is underlain by the coal-seam upon which the company is operating. This seam is nearly horizontal; and a ravine, diagonally crossing the tract, exposes the outcrop on either side for about 2 miles. The territory has been so divided that nearly the whole of it can be worked out by two collieries. The mines at Brilliant were opened in the fall of 1898, and shipments began in the following spring. The original plan was to furnish steam-coal for locomotives to the Illinois Central R. R. Co.; and upon this expectation the investment of capital was made. The field was entirely new; and the softness of the coal at the outcrop induced the belief that it could be very cheaply mined. A contract for the delivery of a large quantity of coal to the railroad was accordingly executed. But with the advance of&apos; the entries to increasing distances from the outcrop, the coal proved so hard that it could no longer be drilled with a breast-auger; and the expense of mining became so great that the contract for cheap steam-coal had to be canceled. It became evident that the work must be done with machinery and explosives, if it could be profitably done at all. On the other hand, the excellent quality of this coal opened, at the same time, a possible market not specially contemplated at the outset—namely, that of a first-rate coal for domestic and general uses. Fluoride, generally less than 0.5 ppm, is present in ground water from rocks of Paleozoic age and older, in northern and eastern Alabama. Some of the water-bearing formations in the Coastal Plain area of the State yield water with as much as 6.8 ppm fluoride. IN June 1940, the U. S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Geological Survey of Alabama, began a study of the ground-water resources of the part of Alabama where water is obtained from Cretaceous rocks. The purpose of the study was to determine the quality, quantity, occurrence, and availability of ground water in that area. These studies have been expanded to include ground-water investigations in the area of Tertiary rocks, or southern quarter of the State, and certain areas in northern Alabama. The first report issued on these studies was by C. W. Carlston,1 of the Alabama Geological Survey. In the present paper all references to ground-water data for the Cretaceous area are taken from this earlier publication. In 1945, the Dentistry Division of the Alabama Department of Public Health became interested in the correlation of tooth decay and mottled enamel with the chemical quality of ground water used for public supplies in the State. Through a cooperative arrangement between the State Department of Public Health and the Ground Water Division (now Branch) of the U. S. Geological Survey, a report by the author2 was published in 1948. These two reports give accurate information on the occurrence of fluoride in the Coastal Plain of Alabama. At present, only scattered information is available on fluoride in ground water of the crystalline-rock or Piedmont area and for the Paleozoic area of Alabama, but it is hoped that in the future more complete information on the presence of fluoride in ground water in these areas can be collected. Outline of Geology and Ground Water: As described by Adams,3 the State of Alabama includes parts of two major geologic divisions, the Appalachian region and the Coastal Plain. The boundary between these divisions is irregular and is known as the Fall Line of the Atlantic and Gulf Coast States. The Fall Line enters Alabama near Phoenix City, extends westward to Wetumpka, Clanton, and Tuscaloosa, and then swings northwestward to the northwest corner of the State. The Appalachian region in Alabama includes three major provinces, the Piedmont province, the Appalachian Ridge and Valley province, and the Appalachian Plateau province (fig. 1). The rock formations in the Piedmont province in east-central Alabama are mainly of pre-Cambrian age, chiefly crystalline schists and gneisses injected by younger igneous rocks (fig. 1, I). They are faulted and folded and have a complicated structure. These rocks are the oldest and among the most complex rocks in the State. Generally, only small yields of ground water are obtained from rocks in this area. Even though ground water is of great importance for the development of domestic and farm supplies in rural areas and a few small industrial and municipal wells, yields in the area from individual wells generally range from 5 to 25 gpm and rarely exceed 50 gpm. The geologic formations of the Appalachian Ridge and Valley province and the Appalachian Plateau province (see fig. 1, II, and III) are separated on the basis of their structure. Fluoride, generally less than 0.5 ppm, is present in ground water from rocks of Paleozoic age and older, in northern and eastern Alabama. Some of the water-bearing formations in the Coastal Plain area of the State yield water with as much as 6.8 ppm fluoride. IN June 1940, the U. S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Geological Survey of Alabama, began a study of the ground-water resources of the part of Alabama where water is obtained from Cretaceous rocks. The purpose of the study was to determine the quality, quantity, occurrence, and availability of ground water in that area. These studies have been expanded to include ground-water investigations in the area of Tertiary rocks, or southern quarter of the State, and certain areas in northern Alabama. The first report issued on these studies was by C. W. Carlston,1 of the Alabama Geological Survey. In the present paper all references to ground-water data for the Cretaceous area are taken from this earlier publication. In 1945, the Dentistry Division of the Alabama Department of Public Health became interested in the correlation of tooth decay and mottled enamel with the chemical quality of ground water used for public supplies in the State. Through a cooperative arrangement between the State Department of Public Health and the Ground Water Division (now Branch) of the U. S. Geological Survey, a report by the author2 was published in 1948. These two reports give accurate information on the occurrence of fluoride in the Coastal Plain of Alabama. In conducting the manufacture of extruded brass rods and brass forgings it has been noticed that there is considerable variation in the physical properties, particularly the machinability of different rods and forgings, even though the composition, working temperatures and method of manufacture remain the same. It is the purpose of this paper to attempt to establish the cause and extent of this variation, and also to determine whether variations in composition within certain defined limits influence hardness and machinability to any marked degree. The writer believes that this variation probably is due to the variation in grain size of the metal, therefore the microstructures of several compositions under various conditions of working were examined in an effort to establish this as a fact. Survey of Previous Work in Studying Extrusion Defects Very little has been published concerning defects in extruded and forged brass. In 1921, R. Genders1 $ delivered a paper before the British Institute of Metals, relative to a defect inherent in the extrusion process. This defect, commonly found in extruded brass rod, shows up in the form of a circle in a transverse section consisting of oxides and impurities, and is generally present in the last 25 to 30 per cent of the rod. Genders concluded that the defect is caused by the turning inward of the skin of the billet at the edge of the plunger because the inside of the billet is more plastic than the outside, which is in contact with the cooler container; the outside skin will lag behind to form the rear end of the rod. Genders suggested a movable die as a remedy, and while this met with fair success, it is not used in present practice. About the same time as Genders&apos; experiments, Tucker2 and Rosen-hain3 conducted experiments using colored plasticene in the form of a billet, and found much the same defect as Genders. THE oil-bearing districts of Poland are found on the slopes of the Carpathian Mountains. The oil belt extends from Gorlice southeast to Stanislawow. It is approximately 250 miles long and 30 miles wide, and comprises four geological districts: the western, or Gorlice district; next, to the east, the Krosno district; the Boryslaw district; and, in the extreme southeast, the Stanislawow district. The amount of petroleum produced in Poland from the beginning of the oil industry scarcely totals 26,000,000 metric tons, or 15 per cent. of the estimated supply. Of this amount, 18,000,000 tons have been taken from the fields of Boryslaw within 25 years; and only about 8,000,000 tons from all other fields within a period twice as long, although some of these other fields represent just as good possibilities as did Boryslaw at the beginning of its development. The Polish oil industry was severely stricken by the war. The retreating Russian armies, in 1915, destroyed a large number, of the existing oil wells, nor was the post-war period favorable for the development of this industry;; the money and credit stringency interfered with the expansion of drilling. But since 1921 there has. been a slow steady increase in production and there is now every reason to believe that conditions in the industry will improve. In fact, an increase in new drillings has been reported for the current year. The production of crude oil in Poland, in 1913, amounted to 1,113,668 metric tons. In 1914, the production declined- to 655,600 metric tons. In 1921, the production was 705,596 tons; in 1922, 712,428 tons, and in 1923, 737,182 tons; or more than 5,000,000 bbl. But the fields have a much greater potential output, which could be realized were the capital available for prospecting and new drilling. The principal producing, and at present most exploited, fields are around Boryslaw and Schodnica. These fields were developed rapidly for in the first year of their modern exploitation the wells were gushers of moderate depth. However, as a result of heavy drilling, the shallow folds have been exhausted and oil can be reached now only by deep drilling. Wells of almost 5600 ft. have been drilled in Boryslaw. Because of these drilling conditions, a large number of engineers and workmen specially skilled in deep drilling are to be found in this field.

Australia, the land of the kangaroo, koala, and the platypus, is often referred to as "down under" by people of the Northern Hemisphere. It is a tropical land and has very little freezing and thawing; consequently the in-place rocks are near the surface, exposing some of the unaltered mineralization. This type of geology induces the prospector and miner to search for minerals which lie at his feet (or not far under them), and it is adapted to open cut surface mining. Some of the rules and regulations applicable to exploration and mining in Australia will be interesting and helpful towards understanding acquisitions and control of minerals. They are common and basic to the United Kingdom. Throughout Australia practically all minerals are the property of the Crown (government), and their exploration and exploitation are administered by the state Department of Mines. Surface owners, or land lessees, do not control the minerals. Their mining codes protect the prospector. If a prospector obtains a permit, "miner&apos;s right," it entitles him to search for minerals any place within the state, only holding him responsible for damages he may incur in his exploration. If he finds something of interest, he may then apply for an authority to prospect, which gives greater latitude and protection in his work to develop the find. However, he will be obligated to spend a minimum specified amount to exclusively hold an area. He will be required to furnish maps, analyses, and geological data to the Mines Department. Presuming that he has located something economically valuable for mining, he may then apply for a mining lease or be granted a franchise to produce a specific material. It will contain a quantity clause so that the area cannot be held indiscriminately without production of the mineral. The states have Bureaus of Mineral Resources, Geology, and Geophysics that keep constantly abreast of the search for minerals and often do much of the drilling and deep boring to promote geological study for the states.

By elimination of other possible nucleation processes, it has been demonstrated, for commercially pure magnesium and a Mg-Al alloy, that at stresses less than that necessary for triple-point cracking creep cavities are most probably nucleated heterogeneously at second-phase particles. Evidence for the existence of such particles is presented and the role of grain boundary sliding in the nucleation process is examined quantitatively. DURING creep deformation of polycrystalline magnesium and its dilute alloys in the temperature range 0.45 to 0.7 Tm (Tm = absolute melting temperature) cavities form mainly along grain boundaries oriented normal to the stress axis and failure eventually occurs by their growth and impingement.&apos; The possibility of low-ductility creep failure of magnesium-alloy reactor cans during service has prompted a number of studies of cavity formation in these materials.2-5 In this paper divergent theories of cavity nucleation6-10 are examined critically and conclusions drawn regarding the most probable mechanism of formation of cavities in magnesium. The paper is divided into two parts. The first section consists of the review and quantitative assessment of the possible role of grain boundary sliding in the nucleation process. In the second part an experimental program is described where an electron-microscope technique has been used to determine if second-phase particles exist in as-received commercially pure magnesium and in a magnesium alloy 1) THEORETICAL REVIEW Possible nucleation sites for creep cavities are: a) high-angle grain boundary triple points,11-14 b) subboundary/grain boundary intersections,15-18 c) ledges in the grain boundary, 19-25 d) second-phase particles. 9,26-30 Each of these possibilities is now considered with special reference to deformation of magnesium. 1.1) Triple-Point Cracking. The stroh31 condition to nucleate fracture is: " > vr [1] where ss = applied shear stress, ? = surface energy, C = shear modulus, L = length of sliding interface. This relationship is independent of the nature of the interface and it is possible to calculate the stress concentration at the end of a sliding high-angle grain boundary and thus deduce, approximately,* the minimum applied stress necessary to nucleate triple-point cracking. Such theoretical predictions for Nimonic alloys have been made by McLean13 and found to agree quite closely with the minimum stress determined by experiment. Stresses capable of nucleating triple-point cracking should also be sufficient to nucleate fracture at a grain boundary due to intragranular slip, for the lengths of sliding interface in the two cases are approximately equal. Thus the minimum stress for triple-point cracking should represent a demarcation between failure due to general "cracking" and that due to cavitation. Hauser, Landon, and Dorn32 have demonstrated that for polycrystalline magnesium in the temperature range 78° to 298°K the fracture stress is inversely proportional to the square root of the mean grain diameter. As pointed out by stroh31 this result indicates that Eq. [I] describes the fracture characteristics of magnesium at low temperatures. Heal3 has reported that for rapid deformation (112 pct hr-1) of polycrystalline magnesium the transition from cracking to cavitation occurs in the temperature range 175" to 275°C. He also presented the fracture-stress values for the same material tested under similar conditions. From Eq. [I] taking G = 1.3 x 10" dynes , ? = 600 ergs . cm-2,33 and L = 0.017 cm, a Stroh-McLean13,31 tensile stress of -266 kg. cm-2 is calculated, corresponding to a transition temperature of -190°C; this is in

The recrystallization and grain-growth phenomena of cold-worked metals have considerable industrial importance because of their role in the fabrication of metals. For this reason, and because of the general academic interest in the subject, these processes have received considerable attention since the time of J. E. Stead&apos;s paper1 on The Crystalline Structure of Iron and Steel. There are considerable differences of opinion regarding the theory of recrystallization and grain growth and also differences in the observation of the modus operandi of the processes themselves. The value of many of the existing quantitative data on grain growth is decreased by the failure to distinguish between the grain sizes just after complete recrystallization and those resulting from coalescence. For this reason also, the value of the diagrams of stable grain sizes, like those produced by Bass and Glocker2 and Czochralski3, is lessened in so far as an interpretation of the facts of recrystallization is concerned. It is hoped that the data presentcd in this paper will help to clarify and to simplify the facts relating to recrystallization, and at the same time will show that some of the present-day conceptions are untenable. A paper on the theory of recrystallization, with additional data, will be completed in the near future by the writers. Since the literature on the subject has been adequately and frequently reviewed, the only referenccs to it in this paper will be those necessary in the discussion of the data presented.
