MAINTAINING a satisfactory structure in brass and bronze castings has always been a foundry problem of great practical importance. While metallurgists and scientific investigators have not entirely ignored this matter, it has received less of their attention than has been given to iron, steel and the wrought copper and aluminum alloys. Investigation in this field has probably been discouraged to some extent by the complicated nature of the alloys involved. Hundreds of alloys are in more or less common use, most of them containing copper, zinc, lead and tin in-widely varying proportions. They also contain appreciable percentages of iron and antimony as impurities, and often phosphorus, which has been added as a deoxidizer and fluidifier. Small amounts of sulfur are usually present. It is not uncommon to find nickel, sometimes in rather substantial quantities. Traces of other metals are frequently present. So complicated and variable a mixture obviously offers difficulties in. any investigation of the various factors that influence the structure and other properties of the casting.

In view of the frequent occurrence of petroleum in other parts of the world, it seems odd that so large an area as is contained within the borders of Brazil should be without this product. This apparent deficiency may be due, however, to our ignorance of the regions in which it may exist. In some places, indications point to the probable existence of petroleum in ages gone by; and while the presence of petroleum pools may be problematic, in several regions conditions not unfavorable to their occurrence exist. Yet, Brazil has enormous oil resources in the rich oil-shales in different parts of the country. Many of these shales are very rich and only suitable processes for the extraction of the oil are lacking. At the present time, only a few small experimental plants are producing oil by distillation from these shales. These plants have been the subject of recent investigations by the Geological and Mineralogical Survey, a preliminary report of which is in the hands of the printer. The only regions where studies have not been made are the upper Amazon, the Acre, the Rio Negro, and the Peruvian frontier, which really seems to be the most promising field for explorations of any in the country. In the vast plateau region of the interior north of the 20th parallel of latitude, granites, gneiss, mica schists, and very old metamorphosed sedimentaries predominate. Later, sedimentaries occupy a minor position and, where found in the interior, represent a thin veneering resting on the older rocks. At several places near the coast they have a greater development and contain considerable beds of oil-shale and may, .in some cases, offer conditions favorable for the occurrence of oil. Such deposits are found in the Permian rocks of central and southern Maran-hao; in the Tertiary and Cretaceous beds along the coast of Alagsas Sergipe, Bahia, and perhaps farther south in Espirito Santo; and in the Parahyba embayment north of Cape Frio and in the interior Tertiary basin of eastern Sao Paulo.

During the summer of 1927, the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism of the Carnegie Institution of Washington joined with the Michigan College of Mining and Technology in conducting a series of earth-resistivity measurements in the Michigan copper country. The geological structure in this section is quite varied and fairly well known. The purpose of the investigation was to discover the correlation between the variations in electrical resistivity of large masses of soil and rock in place and the geological structure below the surface. The work done may be roughly divided into two parts: (1) Measurement and study of the variations in resistivity with depth, or with volume, to establish such general relations as exist between the two; and (2) the determination of the specific resistivity of various formations in order to make available more fundamental data which may aid in the interpretation of the results of the former type of measurement. A report by Mr. Rooney, which gives in detail the measurements made and the results obtained, forms the basis for this article. Measurement and Study of Variations in Resistivity The possibility of applying data from measurements of the physical properties of earth material to the study of the geological structure has long been recognized, and a number of methods for determining the position and character of concealed rock strata by means of seismic, gravitation, magnetic and electrical measurements made on the surface are being used with varying degrees of success. One physical property which varies widely for different materials, and hence affords an opportunity for distinguishing between them, is their electrical resistance. Locations • were selected where the geological structures were well known and where the depths to the water level and bed rock had been determined by drilling. The problem was to determine the value of measurements of resistivity and its variations as indications of the geological structure below the surface.

NO important discoveries of petroleum during 1932 are reported from Canada. New Brunswick, which has a small production from one field, was inactive, and the production showed a decline from 6600 bbl. in 1931 to about 6300 bbl. for the year 1932. The old fields in Ontario increased from 123,000 to about 131,000 bbl. Alberta showed a decline of more than one-third, from 1,413,631 bbl. in 1931 to about 913,000 bbl. in 1932. This decline was due principally to the restrictions placed on the flow of gas wells in the Turner Valley field, from which the crude naphtha is obtained that accounted for more than 93 per cent of the production of Alberta and for more than 80 per cent of the production of all Canada in 1932. The starting of new wells to the limestone that produces the naphtha-bearing gas was prohibited late in 1931, and only wells started before that time were finished during 1932. One well was drilled in the Turner Valley field to a depth of 7555 ft., establishing a depth record for Canada. It passed out of the Madison limestone at 5560 ft., and encountered showings of oil in the underlying formations, probably of Devonian age. Commercial production had not been established by the end of the year. Commercial oil wells were brought in in two areas in Ontario which had previously been considered as productive of gas only— in the Dawn gas field, Lambton County, and in Raleigh Township, Kent County. The discovery wells had initial productions of about 50 bbl. per day, but no production of major importance is indicated. In Alberta, outside the Turner Valley district, two wildcats were drilled northwest. of Lethbridge in the Keho Lake vicinity. Both failed to make commercial producers in the Madison limestone, but one was testing upper sands at the close of the year. Good showings of oil are reported. A very small production was found in the Madison limestone in a wildcat well on the Twin River structure southeast of Lethbridge and another well has been started near by on what is considered on geophysical evidence to be a better location structurally. About 15 locations were made on the Canadian side of the border north of the Cut Bank development in Montana.

The problems involved in an optimum decision making model for flotation circuit are, first of all, to characterize the feed material in terms of parameters which can quantitatively describe the network flotation action in terms of a feasible set of control actions. Once the characterization has been postulated, it is then necessary to devise tests relating to parameter sensitivity, in order that credibility of the model predictions can be assessed. Once a credible model is available, the optimum control set is determined by a hill climbing technique. Details will be reported as to the credibility of model predictions using the stochastic flotation model on a network and further, computational problems associated with hill climbing for a complex objective function are reviewed. Discussion is presented on use of the Rosenbrock technique with constraints and use of a modified objective function with constrained derivatives when employing Fletcher and Powell technique.

RECENTLY, Chaudron,&apos; Montariol,2 and their co-workers published the results of their studies on zone-refined aluminum. They found their material to be capable of recrystallization at —50°C, but gave no data as to the percentage reduction or time required. Their material was found to be practically non-work hardening at room temperature, but after 96 pct cold work at a low temperature and storage in liquid nitrogen it was found to recrystallize to coarse grains in less than 3 hr at 20°C. Recently, a study was made of the room temperature recrystallization characteristics of zone-melted aluminum. An ingot 14 in. in length, with a 3hx3 in. cross section, was made in an extremely high purity graphite boat under an atmosphere of dried commercial argon. It was made by first passing the molten zone along the ingot of 99.99+ pct A1 15 times. At this point, the most impure 3 in. (the end toward which the eutectic forming impurities migrated) were replaced with more of the original starting material, and 15 more traverses were made. Each traverse of the zone along the ingot required approximately 3 hr. Three ingots were prepared in this identical fashion and the chemical analyses were made spec-trographically on two of these ingots, rather than on the one used in this investigation. The analyses were made at 1 in. intervals along the ingot, in duplicate. Over the purest 5 in. of the ingot, which were most important in this investigation, there was found an average composition of <0.00004 pct Cu, <0.0003 pct Fe, <0.0001 pct Si, and <0.0001 pct Mg. In addition, the following elements were not detected spectrographically even in the more impure end of the bar: manganese, zinc, nickel, chromium, titanium, vanadium, lead, tin, boron, beryllium, bismuth, gallium, zirconium, cadmium, antimony, cobalt, and molybdenum. The original ingot was given several cold reductions, with intermediate anneals in order to refine the grains. Owing to the extreme length resulting and the ease of deforming the material plastically, it was cut into eight equal lengths and identified as shown in Fig. 1, with the highest numbered section at the purer end (that enriched with peritectic formers). Section 6 was used in the exploratory work and was found to be of exceptionally high purity, giving more rapid rates of room temperature re crystallization than any previous aluminum studied at the Alcoa Research Laboratories. This fact suggested that the entire midsection of the ingot might be of very high purity. Accordingly, section 4 was chosen for the next study. A portion of it was rolled to cold reductions of 10, 25, 40, 60, 75, and 90 pct at room temperature, and the re-crystallization of each specimen was followed by X-ray pinhole transmission photographs. The other portion received the same treatment, except that both the specimens and the rolls were maintained at 160°F in the process of rolling. The latter ortion was retarded in its recrystallization as compared to the former, probably due to the stress relief effect of the warm rolling. Both of these portions of the fourth section were found to recrystallize at a considerably slower rate than did the sixth section.

Owing to a moratorium in the drilling of crown-land leases in Trinidad during the year of 1931, only 40 wells were spudded in during the first eight months as compared with 110 during the same period in 1930. Nevertheless the production will show an increase of about 400,000 bbl. over that of 1930. An estimate is given in Table 1. Since the oil produced in 1930 was 9,418,907 bbl. and that in 1931 probably will be 9,853,976 bbl., the year 1931 probably will see an increase of about 4.6 per cent. The gross production of crude oil in the colony has increased steadily year by year, with the exception of 1919, when there was a slight decline. A tabulated statement was given last year.&apos; The Petroleum Times of March 21, 1931 (p. 413) gives the total production of 1930 as 9,418,000 bbl. and the average monthly production as 784,833 bbl. The same two items for 1931 are estimated at 9,853,976 and 821,165 bbl., respectively.

The crude-oil production of Germany without Austria during 1938 amounted to 3,864,518 bbl., representing an increase of 21.7 per cent over the 3,173,373 bbl. produced in 1937. Adding the Austrian production, the crude-oil production of the new German Reich totaled 4,259,717 bbl. during 1938, representing an increase of 25.3 per cent compared with the respective figures of the previous year. According to published official data, and using a conversion factor of 1 metric ton equaling 7 bbl., the oil production of Germany in 1938 was as shown in Table 1. A semiofficial publication1 states that the program of the crude-oil industry for the second year (1938) of the four-year plan was successfully accomplished. According to the same source, new drilling developments at the following localities were promising: Reitbrook near Hamburg, Heide in Holstein, Eicklingen-Sandlingen near Celle, Steimbke near Nienburg, Worms in the Rhine Valley, Gifhorn near Braunschweig, Mölme near Oberg, and at other places. The drilling activity for oil is illustrated by the figures in Table 2.

DIATOMS are microscopic aquatic plants of the order Bacillariaceae. They are unicellular plants with skeletons made up of amorphous opaline silica. The skeletons show highly ornate, complicated geometrical designs. Diatoms live in water virtually everywhere. They are found in clean sea water, brackish water, and fresh-water lakes and ponds. When conditions are right, diatoms propagate by subdivision in huge numbers. Alkalinity, temperature, and the presence of high concentrations of silica in the water largely control diatom life. When the diatoms die the skeletons drop to the bottom of their habitat to form oozes of vary-ing thicknesses. DIATOMITES Diatomite, or diatomaceous earth, is composed essentially of the siliceous remains of the diatoms, although other organic skeletons are also present, especially in sea-water deposits where radiolaria, sponges and silico-flagellates are common. Impurities are generally carbonaceous material, fine-grained silt, volcanic ash and dust, and occasional coarse grains of sand. Diatomites are marine, brackish, or fresh-water, depending upon types of diatoms and their method of deposition.

DURING the wartime rush to prepare the glass necessary for the needs of our army and navy, the problem of the temperature control of the annealing kilns became most serious. The narrow limits of strain allowable (all the specifications called for less internal strain than the average of the previously used German glass) made necessary a very exact procedure and the methods had to be used on a much larger scale than theretofore. At the Charleroi plant of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co., the members of the staff of the Geophysical Laboratory, which was cooperating with the company, had occasion to study the methods available, and reached a number of conclusions (many of them by no means new except in their application) that may interest and assist those who have to meet similar problems in other fields. The following is a short account of the essential features of the system of temperature control evolved, along with a rather abridged statement of the reasons that led to the adoption or rejection of various schemes.

The deformation of textured sheet of titanium and several of its all-a (hcp) alloys was investigated with two kinds of experiments: tension testing along different directions in the plane of the sheet, and combined-stress loading along the principal axes of anisotropy (the rolling and transverse directions). Texture and plastic anisotropy were evaluated with pole figures and by measurement, as a function of orientation, of the tensile transverse-strain ratio, or R parameter. The results as a whole can be rationalized qualitatively with the present understanding of deformation mechanisms in titanium. Quantitative agreement between the orientation dependence of tensile yield strength and the Predictions of continuum ANISOTROPY in the properties of engineering materials is more the rule than the exception because anisotropy in structure is so common, and the one generally follows the other. Two broad categories of structural anisotropy are represented by mechanical fibering and crystallographic texture. The former is important in many aspects of fracture.&apos; The latter has more significance for yielding and plastic deformation, theory, using the R measurements, was relatively poor. However, in tension-tension quadrants of the yield-locus diagrams, the difference between theory and experiment was hardly more than 10 pct. The maximum texture-hardening effect was found in a 4Al-1/4O2 alloy to be nearly 50 pct. In the compression-compression quadrant, {1012} deformation twinning prevented the locus from expanding much beyond the Position predicted for isotropic material. With increasing temperature the trend in R was downwards, approaching unity (isotropy) near the a-transus temperature; an accompanying development was large amounts of neck-free extension. which are of special concern in this paper. The tendency has been to view crystallographic texture more as a liability or curio than as an asset. The prominent exception is found in silicon-ferrite sheet for power-transformer cores, which is processed to develop a new optimum texture for high electrical efficiency. Yet it should be possible to find other examples, involving other kinds of properties. More specifically, there is good analytical reason to expect improved combined-stress yielding resistance in suitably textured material,2,3 and it has now been shown by experiment that texture hardening or softening is a potentially useful phenomenon in certain engineering devices and processes.&apos;-I To date, work has included measurements of the transverse (width to thickness) strain ratios in the

This paper describes a technique which permits visual observation of oil displacement processes througlrout the interior of a porous structure as thick as 2 in. A model having glass walls is filled with finely powdered glass. Such a model becomes completely transparent if the powdered glass pack is saturated with an oil having the same refractive index as the glass. When water or gar, with a refractive index different from that of the oil (glass) is injected, the model becomes opaque in the space occupied by the water (gar). visual observation and photography of these displacement processes are thus rendered possible. The following processes have been studied: (I) displacement of oil by water (linear drive) in a homo-geneous formation and in a stratified formation, (2) water flooding (five-spot well pattern), (3) solution gas-drive process, and (4) oil-bank formation. INTRODUCTION Most of the scaled model experiments heretofore carried out in the Koninklijke/Shell Laboratorium, Amsterdam, have been done in steel containers, in which oil-saturated sand packs represented the oil-bearing formation. In such experiments, for instance those on the displacement of oil by water, the cumulative oil production was measured as a function of the cumulative water injection. In order to interpret the measured production data, a need has for some time been felt for a means of observing visually what happens in the course of such experiments. Some information of this kind was obtained earlier by observing the water-oil distribution in various cross sections of the sand after the conclusion of the experiment.&apos; However, the technique used did not guarantee that the fluid distribution remained undisturbed. Moreover, the procedure was somewhat elaborate and the information obtained limited. Therefore a new technique has been developed, which is described below. DESCRIPTION OF EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE AND APPARATUS Glass models simulating part of an oil reservoir are filled with ground Pyrex glass of a specific grain size, representing the porous structure of the prototype. Before an experiment is started, the porous formation has to be saturated completely with an oil having exactly the same refractive index as the Pyrex glass powder. All light-scattering surfaces of the glass grains become invisible and the formation is then transparent. If the oil is displaced by another fluid (e.g. by water in a water-drive experiment, or by gas liberated from the oil in a solution gas-drive experiment) the formation becomes opaque in the region where the oil is expelled from the rock.* The back of the apparatus is painted black and illumination is from the front; therefore, in the photographs of the experiments, the oil-bearing formation appears black, whereas the water- or gas-invaded areas are white.

IN the biographical notice of Thomas F. Witherbee, published in Bulletin No. 32, August, 1909 (p. xxv), it is said that ". he is believed to have been the first manager in America to use the chemical laboratory for the purpose of controlling the regular running of the blast-furnace." Since the year is not given, I cannot decide as. to Mr. Witherbee&apos;s priority; but the statement leads me to contribute a bit of history, showing an early departure from the "rule-of-thumb " blast-furnace work to the employment of a chemist. In the autumn of 1868 the department of mining and metallurgy was established at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In connection with the assay-department a laboratory was equipped for making general commercial analyses. In January, 1869, Alexander L. Holley, the manager and builder of the Bessemer plant at the Rensselaer Works of John A. Griswold & Co., the first plant erected in the United¬States under the Bessemer patents, began to send me samples of ore, pig-iron, and steel for analysis. Early in 1869 I was regularly retained as chemist for the Rensselaer Works; and while the laboratory was not located at the works, for all practical purposes it was the works-laboratory. The increase in work soon made it necessary for me to secure an assistant. I applied to Prof. Charles F. Chandler, who recommended Dr. August Wendel, who had been an assistant of Rammelsberg and had lately landed in New York. Dr. Wendel remained with me until 1873, when I left Troy. My leaving made necessary the erection of a laboratory at the Rensselaer Works, which, was done under my supervision, and Dr. Wendel was employed as chemist. The environment for deposition of marine phosphorite is controlled by the relationship of prevailing climatic, oceanographic, structural, and sedimentary conditions. The set, or sets, of conditions that has evoked the accumulation of economic concentrations of phosphorite has been the subject of a number of previous works. Phosphorite presently considered ore is generally in excess of 10% P205 with an extractable phosphate product in excess of 30% P2O5. The concentration of the product in the ore, its amenability to state-of-the-art extraction, and thickness of the overburden are major controlling factors in determining its mineability. A recent survey of phosphorite deposits in the south-eastern United States included a review of the depositional and structural setting for the major areas of occurrence. The application of previous work regarding phosphorogenesis has led to the establishment of a general depositional model for most mid-Miocene primary phosphorites, and, is also possibly applicable to the Bone Valley (Pliocene-Miocene) district of central Florida.

The trace element geochemistry of the cherty clay-rich carbonate residuum cover in much of southern Missouri and adjacent parts of Arkansas was investigated during the earl 1970&apos;s as part of a statewide geochemical survey of Missouri.1-8 The study was environmentally oriented and focused on the character of the "natural" geochemical environment of the state. A great deal of effort was made to collect samples that would represent the geochemical variability of the near-surface environment in an unbiased way. In general, this was accomplished by use of randomization procedures in both collection and analysis. Most of the sampling sites were selected randomly to prevent personal bias from entering into sample selection. In the laboratory, samples were analyzed in a randomized sequence to circumvent the effects of any systematic bias that may have entered into the laboratory procedures. Several residuum samples contained 1000 parts per million (ppm) or more of lead, zinc, and barium. All these samples were collected in Washington County in or near the barite district. The frequency distributions shown in [Fig. 1] indicate just how unusual the residuum in Washington County is with regard to these three metals and copper. The shaded parts of the histograms represent the samples from Washington County. The histograms are based on analyses of 141 samples from 38 localities scattered over the subcrop of the Cambrian and Ordovician formations of southern Missouri and northern Arkansas. Eight localities were selected randomly from over each of four bedrock units-Bonneterre dolomite; Potosi and Erninence dolomites; Roubidoux formation; and the Jefferson City, Powell, and Cotter dolomites. Six localities were selected randomly from over the Gasconade dolomite. The geochemical "background" for these elements in residuum is defined by samples from outside of Washington County (unshaded part of the histogram); lognormal distribution curves have been fitted to the corresponding parts of each histogram. Clearly, these lognormal models (curves) describe well the background distributions of zinc, barium, and copper. The background histogram of lead concentrations is notably skewed to the right compared to the model. Lognormal distribution curves were also fitted to the data on lead, copper, and zinc in the residuum of Washington County. No model was fitted for barium in Washington County because of the distinct bimodality in the data. All samples containing more than 1000 ppm were collected in the barite mining district and obviously reflect the elevated levels of barium in the district. The frequency distributions for Washington County are clearly anomalous with respect to the background data, those for lead, zinc, and barium being exceptionally so. The models for anomalous lead, zinc, and copper seem to fit reasonably well, although the scatters in the lead and zinc anomalies are considerably larger than the scatters in the corresponding background data. The copper anomaly, although probably real, is greatly subdued compared to that of lead and zinc. Also, it has a scatter similar to that of the copper background, rather than being enhanced like the scatters of the lead and zinc anomalies. Det Norske Zinkicompani A/S was established in 1924, on the initiative of the Compagnie Royale Asturienne des Mines. Experimental electrothermic zinc production was carried out on industrial scale for a two-year period, but the problems of electrothermic smelting were not solved. A license for the electrolytic zinc production process was then obtained from the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. A plant for electrolytic zinc production was built, near the small fjord town of Odda in Hardanger, West Norway, The production was based on zinc ore from Spain, and cheap local hydro-electric power. The plant came into operation in 1929. Annual capacity, 36,000 tons. In 1964 a long-term agreement was concluded with Boliden AB by which Det Norske Zinkkompani is secured the raw materials basis for an expansion of the annual capacity to 100,000 tons of zinc, Since World War II, the company has been pursuing extensive research and development programs. As a result, various sections have been rebuilt: nev unloading and storage facilities, a 250 ton per day Fluid Bed Roaster with contact plant, new continuous leaching system, integrating the Jarosite Residue Process, new solution purification section - upgrading the solution quality for a 600 Amp/m2 current density Tank Room operation -, installation of induction furnaces for cathode melting with casting machines and automatic stacking of slabs. Simultaneously, instrumentation, and methods of automatic control have been developed and introduced, providing conditions for optimal plant operations.

The Spraberry Trend Field of West Texas was discovered in January, 1949. Drilling of 2.234 wells and production of some 45 million bbl of oil by January, 1953, indicated this to be an important field which will ultimately cover more than 400,000 acres. In addition to being the world&apos;s largest field in areal extent, the Spraberry has presented many problems in well completion and operation and has demonstrated unique reservoir performance characteristics. The pay section consists primarily of a few fine grained sandstone or siltstone members in a thousand-ft thick section of shale, limestone. and siltstone. Since porosity averages only 10 per cent and nearly all permeabilities are less than 1 md, conventional core analysis does not delineate the "pay" section. Mercury injection was used as a capillary pressure test adaptable to rapid routine use to select those intervals having low enough connate water saturation to contain commercially significant oil saturation. In the central area of the field this "pay" amounts to 16 ft of Upper Spraberry and 15 ft of Lower Spraberry sands. An interconnected system of vertical fractures, observed in cores, provides the flow channels for oil to drain into the wells hut most of the oil is stored in the matrix since the void volume of fractures is estimated to be less than 1 per cent of that in the sand. Initial potentials of wells range up to 1.000 B/D after fracture treatment which should be compared with estimated capacity of 5 to 10 B/D if oil had to flow into the wells through the sand itself. Without exception initial pressures of later drilled wells were significantly lower than initial pressures of earlier drilled nearby wells in a large area some 6 miles long. This means the earlier drilled wells had drained fluids from areas much greater than their 40-acre proration units. Since most of this performance occurred while the reservoir pressure was above the. saturation pressure it was analyzed by the compressible fluid flow theory. This analysis gave calculated initial presrilres which agreed within 30 psi of measured pressures of 60 per cent of wells in the area using 16-md permeabilitv corresponding to a fracture system substantially that indicated by cores and using combined compressibility of rock and its contained oil and water corresponding to the core analysis data. The most important feature of this analysis was the very close agreement between effective compressibility of the rock and its contained oil and water from the field performance and that from the core tests, because it meant there are no "islands" of low permeability reservoir rock left untapped in the inter-well area and thus no additional wells are necessary to insure that at least one well penetrates each "reservoir." Twenty-five of forty-four 40-acre spaced wells on three contiguous sections were wed in a four-month inteference test. Six shut-in well. were tested monthly for oil production. productivity index. gas-oil ratio and pressure buildup, and seven shut-in wells were tested for decline in reservoir pressure. Tests on 12 regularly producing wells gave comparative data for interpretation of shut-in test wells. Reduction in reservoir pressure, decline in productivity index. and increase in gas-oil ratio were found to be substantially the same in the shut-in test wells as those in the comparative regularly producing wells, meaning that the producing wells were depleting the

Two 4-ft wide DSM screens were installed during 1957 in one unit of the two-unit heavy media cy- clone section of the Holman-Cliffs concentrator at Taconite, Minn., following successful laboratory test work on a 1-ft screen. The two screens materially reduced the amount of media sent to the magnetic separator cleaning circuit. Wear life was good and fine size capacity was high. Briefly, the Holman-Cliffs heavy media cyclone plant uses -65 mesh magnetite as media and 10-in. diam., 30º Ni-Hard cyclones as separatory vessels. Feed to the plant averages 130 long tons per hr of -1/8 in. +65 mesh material. The conventional heavy media circuit uses drum or spiral type separatory units and treats +l/8 or 3/16-in. material. The medium is generally -65 mesh ferrosilicon. Ore and media are readily separated by screening at about 6 mesh. At this size, capacity is high and wear and maintenance are not excessive. The heavy media cyclone plant requires an efficient separation between +65 mesh ore and -65 mesh media. To reduce costs, however, the separation was made at a coarser size with the result that the media was un- duly contaminated and it was necessary to clean large tonnages of media and ore in magnetic separators. Due to the high capital cost of these units, their number was kept to a minimum and, consequently, they were overloaded. As a result, the separation between magnetic media and nonmagnetics was not sharp and the magnetite losses were high.
