This paper describes experiments which represent an effort to measure preciscly the pressure-time history in detonating condensed commercial explosives. The performance of explosives in mining has been a favorite subject for experimentalists and theorists for many decades. Much useful empirical information has been developed; but it has not yet been possible to predict, or even to account for, the behavior of explosives in mining on the basis of fundamental physical principals. A basic piece of information that would appear necessary for any rigorous analysis is the pressure-time history in the detonating condensed explosive. The experiments described here represent an effort to measure this relationship precisely in commercial explosives. THE EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental method, first described by Cowan and Jacksonl has been extensively evaluated by Cowan and Balchan for relatively simple explosives. The experimental procedure involves the detonation of a layer of explosive between metal plates whose external surfaces are polished to a mirror finish (Fig. 1). THE beta solid solution phases of the systems copper-zinc, copper-aluminum, copper-tin and silver-zinc are structurally analogous.1 R. F. Mehl and 0. T. Marzke2 have shown that the a phase upon segregating from the 0 phase in the system copper-zinc takes the form of needles lying parallel to a [111.] direction or some similar direction, such as [556], of the parent solid solution, and that the a phase upon segregating from the ß phase in the system copper-aluminum also takes the form of needles. By analogy they assume that in this case also the segregate needles lie parallel to the [111] or [556] direction in the ß lattice. The purpose of this investigation is to determine whether the structures resulting from segregation of the a phases from the respective 0 phases of the systems copper-tin and silver-zinc are analogous to those obtained by Mehl and Marzke in the systems copper-zinc and copper-aluminum.

The lower cost of producing oil from naturally flowing wells compared with pro-luction costs accruing from artificial lifting methods has stimulated much research, rith the joint purpose of extending the natural flowing life of wells and of increas-ng the productivity of small wells. The iboratory investigation described herein was made to determine the effect of a lotted liner on the pressure gradient in the icinity of the wall of a flowing well. Although the bene-ts to be realized by operators through the se of optimum liners is just beginning to e recognized generally, Coberlyl in 1937 ointed out that the functioning of screen is is an important factor in the pro-uction of oil. From his study on the :lection of size of oil strings for wells in California, Parks2 concluded, in part, that the perforated section of the oil string deserves continued study, especially with respect to the selection of perforations. The growing use of gravel packing resulting from certain research findings lends even more significance to the problem of selecting optimum liners, as the application of these methods usually requires slotted liners or other kinds of perforated liners. The present study was made to obtain further information for the guidance of engineers and operators in selecting slotted liners and to develop a laboratory method that may be used in analyzing possible pressure conditions surrounding most types of perforated casings used in producing oil wells, so that the present inadequate fund of knowledge on this important subject may be expanded. Discussion of ProbleM At the beginning of the investigation the following assumptions were made regarding bottom-hole conditions of a producing oil well and the oil-sand reservoir it penetrates: (I) Conditions of steady-state flow exist, (') a a homogeneous liquid is being produced) (3) no contaminating material (such as drilling fluid) is present between the liner and the face of the oil-bearing sand, (4) the well is vertical and completely penetrates a horizontal sand stratum of uniform thickness occurring between two impermeable strata, and (5) the flow is wholly viscous. The term "slime-coating" is not new in the art of flotation; the phenomenon has been observed and described by Taggart;(l)† Taggart, Taylor, and Ince;(2) and by Ince.(3) Notwithstanding that flotation was introduced for the treatment of finely crushed ore, the adverse effects of slimes have been recognized since the earliest days of the process, and the Elmore, Delprat, Potter, and other processes actually specified desliming of the ore prior to treatment. The cause of this trouble has been studied and described by Taggart;(1) Taggart, Taylor, and Ince;(2) Ince;(3) Morrow and Griswold;(4) and by Gaudin and Malozemoff.(5) Old Theory of Slime-coatings At present, so far as published work shows, there seems to be but one theory for the mechanism of slime-coatings. Ince(3) states that they are due to attraction between electrostatic charges of opposite sign on the sulfide and on the slime particles, supporting this theory by migration experiments in the Burton tube. He also used the microscope in conjunction with a glass cell employed by Beans and Eastlack(6) in studying migration, but met with interference from endosmosis. Several attempts have been made in the Department of Mineral Dressing at Columbia University to duplicate Ince's experiments with the Burton tube, but the results have never been convincing. Formation of precipitates which settled through the pulp levels, and evolution of gas at the electrodes, which disturbed the interface between the pulp and the distilled water above it, seriously interfered with observations. However, by use of the migration cell shown in Fig. 1, endosmosis effects and the disturbances due to precipitation and gas evolution were avoided, and distinct and reproducible migrations or absence of migration were observed. The cell was made of bakelite and had platinum electrodes. The nature of freckle segregation is determined by chemical analyses, microradiograplzy, and electron microprobe. In addition, the influence of chemistry variation on freckle formation is studied in laboratory experiments. It is demonstrated that controlled laboratory solidification can produce freckle segregation. "FRECKLE" segregation is a discontinuous, rod-like segregation observed in vacuum consumable -electrode ingots. Figs. 1 and 2 show this segregation as pencil-like, dark etching areas of segregation found in longitudinally and transversely sectioned consumable-electrode ingots. In most cases the segregation is perpendicular with respect to gravity and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the ingot. The segregation is most often encountered at or around midradius in large vacuum consumable-electrode ingots. The austenitic alloys, A-286* and 718, † have shown particular susceptibility to this mode of segregation. The origin of these rodlike pockets of segregation is not well-understood. It has been suggested that the segregation is a result of a portion of the electrode dropping off and passing through the arc un-melted. On the other hand, smeltzer1 has demonstrated the freckle segregation in A-286 to be comprised of low-melting constituents relative to the matrix melting point. The discontinuous nature of the segregation is the most perplexing facet of the freckle-segregation problem. It was to gain some insight into this part of the problem that this work was undertaken. I) PROCEDURE At the outset of the work identification of the phases present and the elements concentrated in the freckle areas was undertaken. The electron micro-probe was used to determine general enrichment as well as -specific phase chemistry. Microradiography using cobalt and chromium radiation was also used on the freckle areas again to determine the elements involved in the segregation. X-ray diffraction patterns were made from portions of these same foil specimens. Optical microscopy and Knoop hardness measurements were also used

In low temperature phase diagrams, liquidus curves below about 1500°C are relatively easily established, e.g., by thermal analysis or separation of coexisting solid and liquid phases, followed by chemical analysis. Experimental difficulties increase considerably at higher temperatures and in systems involving more reactive metals. Although there are now thermocouples available for use from 1600" to 2400°c, as summarized by Caldwell,' the need for frequent calibration, aging, and contamination problems, and unavailability of suitable protection tubes has sharply limited their use at higher temperatures. Many of the high melt- ing metals are found to react with refractory oxides. TO avoid such problems, a frequently used procedure is the diffusion and saturation method, as described by Spedding et a1.' for the system La-C. This technique involves the annealing of one metal or a suitable alloy in a crucible of the other element at a temperature above the melting point, followed by chemical analysis of the center of the melt, after equilibrium is established. Further, if an alloy system is to be investigated employing the electron microbeam probe, and calibration charts have been established, it may be possible to measure the alloy concentration at the center of a cored as-cast structure, and to conclude from this points on the liquidus curve in a manner similar to the one to be described. It is known that in phases with a broad homogeneity range the rapidly cooled, cored, as-cast structure of an alloy presents concentrations having different lattice constants; this spread of lattice constant values contributes to the broadened lines of a powder pattern for the as-cast condition. The region of the crystal which is first to solidify will then correspond to the edge of the lines if the change of the lattice parameters with concentration is monotonous. The diffusion of carbon in Fe-Co-C austenites was studied as a function of cobalt concentration up to 12 at. pet, using an autoradiographic technique. The diffusion coefficient was found to initially decrease and then increase with increasing cobalt concentration, the trends being more marked the higher the temperature of diffusion. These effects were paralleled by variations in the activation energy and the constant for diffusion which, however, were found to be dependent also on the carbon content. The results are compared with the previously available data and their significance is discussed in terms of the kinetics of solid-state reactions in this systern. Experimental results obtained in laboratory leaching studies of primary copper sulfide ore in sulfuric acid systems pressurized with oxygen are interpreted by a computerized geometric model involving the movement of a reaction zone through the ore fragments. Physical properties of the ore, including size, shape, and mineral content, are considered. The leaching mechanism involves mixed kinetics and includes a surface reaction within a moving reaction zone plus pore diffusion of dissolved oxygen through the reacted portion of the ore fragment to the reaction zone. The results are applicable to conditions that would exist in nuclear solution mining or similar processes in which the ore is converted into rubble and then inundated by a leach solution adequately supplied with oxidants. Experimental results at 90°C are correlated with the model, which includes temperature-dependent parameters.

The need for mechanization in coal mining wherever it can be successfully introduced is evident when we take into account the fact that during recent years the coal-mine employee's wages have increased and his hours have been shortened. Coal is no longer King, and a brief study of statistics covering the production of coal, petroleum and natural gas and the development of water power will convince anyone that coal has had very powerful competitors during the past 10 years. Petroleum production in the United States between 1918 and 1936 increased from 100 per cent to 309 per cent. Water power increased from 100 per cent in 1918 to 270 per cent in 1936. Bituminous coal slipped from 100 per cent in 1918 to 75 per cent in 1936. The anthracite industry slipped from 100 per cent in 1918 to 50 per cent in 1932, but climbed to 55 per cent in 1936. In 1918, the State of Washington produced a little over four million tons of coal and the production of California oil, at that time, was a little less than one hundred million barrels per year. By 1929 the production of California oil had increased to a little over 292,000,000 bbl. or nearly 300 per cent as compared with 1918. By 1934 the production of coal in the state of Washington had dropped to about 1 1/3 millions of tons per year. Our neighbors in British Columbia had their coal production reduced from a little over 2 1/2 million tons in 1920 to less than 1 1/3 million in 1933. The North western Improvement Co., a subsidiary of the Northern Pacific Railroad Co., owns coal properties in various parts of Washington and Montana. The Northern Pacific is one of the very few railroads using any considerable quantity of coal in its operations. Practically all of the American railroads in the Pacific Northwest, except the Northern Pacific, are using cheap California fuel oil or electricity. This problem, of course, is not a new one in coal mining, and all of the progressive coal companies in the country have tried to meet competition from an overproduction of petroleum and an overproduction of natural gas as well as enlarged developments of hydroelectric plants.

Sharp declines of initial production of both oil and gas occurred in West Virginia during 1943. There was only a small decrease in the number of ncw wells, but these wells did not show the quantities of oil and gas that might have been expected. The same situation prevailed both as to routine drilling in old pools and as to exploratory wildcat wells. Out of 42 wildcats drilled, 19 resulted in small commercial gas wells, and 2 in small commercial oil. No new oil pools were discovered, but the proved limits of several old pools were considerably extended, giving 4200 acres of newly proved oil territory. Three new gas pools, resulting from discoveries made in 1942 and former years, came into definite activity. The newly proved gas territory in these and in various extensions of old pools is 39,000 acres or more. It is doubtful whether the newly proved reserves of either oil or gas will balance current withdrawals. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 696 new wells were drilled, resulting in 82 oil wells with 919 bbl. of daily new production; 475 gas wells with 454,735,000 cu. ft. of daily open flow, and 137 dry holes. Also, 57 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 3 bbl. and 11,484,000 cu. it. of added production. On the new wells, the oil average was 11.2 bbl. per well per day, and the gas average was 957,337 cu. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 19.68 per cent. On deeper drilling the ratio of failures was 14.03 per cent. The greatly decreased average initial gas-well production in 1943, as compared with 2,270,406 CU. ft. per well in 1942, is directly attributable to the abrupt decline of completions in the Charleston gas field, which reached its peak in 1942. Production of oil for the year was estimated by the U. S. Rureau of Mines as 3,349,000 bbl., as compared with 3,574,000 bbl. in 1942. Production of natural gas for the year is estimated by the author as 210,000, 000,000 cu. ft., compared with the U. S. Bureau of Mines final figures of 215,193,-000,000 cu. ft.* in 1942.

IN February, 1918, the conclusion was published by Lewis and Beal1 "that wells of equal output on the average will produce equal amounts of oil in the future, regardless of the ages of the wells." This conclusion was based upon the study of data collected principally in Oklahoma and was not known at that time to be true for other oil fields. An abundance of statistical proof was later, collected by the senior author of the present paper, which showed that the conclusion was undoubtedly well founded and that it applied to other fields as well. Accordingly, it was later restated2 as the "law of equal expectations" as follows: "If two wells under similar conditions .produce equal amounts during any given year, the amounts they will produce thereafter, on the average, will be approximately equal, regardless of their relative ages." Although only scanty data from the California oil fields were available at the time this publication was prepared, sufficient information was analyzed upon which to base the insert on Fig. 80, which showed beyond a doubt that the law held at least for a part of the Midway oil field in California. Recently the authors have collected more complete data in California, and it is the purpose of this paper to explain the method used in demonstrating the truth of the law and, in addition, to give several methods by which curves constructed in accordance with this law can be used in a practical way with ease and accuracy.

The complicated nature of the property changes that accompany age-hardening has made it necessary to reconsider and to elaborate the simple dispersion theory.l It has been apparent for some time that more direct information is needed concerning the atomic mechanism of precipitation from solid solution if the theory of age-hardening is to be developed past a purely qualitative stage.‡ Fortunately, in recent years information has been developed which allows us to trace in detail the lattice changes accompanying the process of precipitation from solid solution. This information relates chiefly to the sequence of the several stages of lattice alteration by which the matrix lattice is transformed to the equilibrium precipitate lattice, and permits reasonable inferences to he drawn concerning the states of internal strain that accompany these stages. This information is most complete for the solid solution of copper in aluminum. The equilibrium precipitate is the 0 phase, "CuAl2." This forms in plates, parallel to the {100} matrix planes. The atom pattern and atom spacing on the plane in 0 lying parallel to this plane are roughly similar to those opposite it in the matrix.3 The formation of 0, however, is preceded by the formation of a transition lattice 0': which again lies parallel to the matrix {100} plane, but in this case the matching of atom pattern and spacing across the matrix-precipitate interface is nearly periect; thus there is lattice coherency across the interface and the interface is a plane of separation in only a very limited sense.'8 Particles of 0' may be recognized microscopically and form a well-defined Wid-manstatten figure.* The 0' lattice is recognized by the occurrence of diffraction lines on powder photo-grams or of spots on Laue photograms which may be analyzed in the usual ways to determine the lattice type and the lattice spacings. Very recent research 6, 7, 1 has shown, however, that streaks occur on the Laue photogram at an earlier point in time during the aging process. These streaks have been attributed to a preferential clustering of copper atoms into small platelike elements of only a few atoms in thickness and a lew hundred atoms in diameter, probably of the composition of " CuA12," which may be designated as Guinier-Preston zones or aggregates.1 It is difficult if not impossible to determine the lattice type and lattice spacing in these aggregates. It is possible1 that these aggregates are in fact ?' in a high State of dispersion; the inclination to argue this is strong, as we shall see later. Never-

The atom pattern and atom spacing on the plane in 0 lying parallel to this plane are roughly similar to those opposite it in the matrix.3 The formation of 0, however, is preceded by the formation of a transition lattice 0': which again lies parallel to the matrix {100} plane, but in this case the matching of atom pattern and spacing across the matrix-precipitate interface is nearly periect; thus there is lattice coherency across the interface and the interface is a plane of separation in only a very limited sense.'8 Particles of 0' may be recognized microscopically and form a well-defined Wid-manstatten figure.* The 0' lattice is recognized by the occurrence of diffraction lines on powder photo-grams or of spots on Laue photograms which may be analyzed in the usual ways to determine the lattice type and the lattice spacings. Very recent research 6, 7, 1 has shown, however, that streaks occur on the Laue photogram at an earlier point in time during the aging process. These streaks have been attributed to a preferential clustering of copper atoms into small platelike elements of only a few atoms in thickness and a lew hundred atoms in diameter, probably of the composition of " CuA12," which may be designated as Guinier-Preston zones or aggregates.1 It is difficult if not impossible to determine the lattice type and lattice spacing in these aggregates. It is possible1 that these aggregates are in fact ?' in a high State of dispersion; the inclination to argue this is strong, as we shall see later. Never-

THE man who forgot to mail the letters his wife gave him was for once justified at Tulsa, for envelopes, scratch paper and tablecloths were all in demand and through the two days of the meeting of the Petroleum Division, pencils were busy everywhere sketching out diagrams, drawing curves, figuring, or just taking notes. Those attending took the serious papers seriously, and discussion was wide-ranging but pointed. Despite the highly technical character of the papers presented, the chairmen had never to call for discussion; it was only necessary to say the paper was open for it. Both days the meetings lasted until after five in the afternoon, and it was enthusiastically voted to advance the meeting hour on Friday, in order to give more time. In all, ten papers, abstracts of which appeared in MINING AND METALLURGY for October, and copies of all but two of which were available in print, were presented in the two days, and no more could have been handled to advantage in that time. All but one of these dealt with problems of production engineering. That, the opening paper, was a general review of demand, supply and price in 1928, by Campbell Osborn, in which he argued for the price control of production and showed how the economic conditions determined development. J. Elmer Thomas presented a carefully prepared review of the same data, but came to somewhat different conclusions as to trend, and J. E. Pogue pointed out that in recent years it has been the manufacturing rather than the producing industries that have been notably profitable. Limestone resources for industrial, constructional, and agricultural uses occur on the surface and at minable depths in several areas along the Ohio River and its navigable tributaries in Kentucky. High calcium and high carbonate limestones suitable for use in cement and lime production, steel manufacture, environmental control measures, and other special uses are present in the High Bridge Group (Ordovician) and Warsaw and Ste. Genevieve Limestones (Mississippian). Deposits with thicknesses of 7.3 to 20.7 m,(24 to 68 feet) have been documented by the analysis of samples taken at 0.3-m (1ft) intervals. Active and potential mine and quarry sites afford access to water transporation and proximity to a number of industrial and metropolitan centers. Geologic factors affecting the distribution of deposits include the Cincinnati arch, regional dip into the Appalachian and Eastern Interior basins, complex faulting in and near the western Kentucky fluorspar mining district, and late Paleozoic erosional unconformities in northeastern Kentucky.

The mechanism of flotation of sphalerite with sulthydryl compounds of different acidities has been interpreted in terms of chemisorption of unionized collector molecules on hydroxylated zinc surface sites. At a constant collector concentration of 1.5 x 10 -4 M, the upper pH limit of flotation has been found to be directly and closely related to the negative logarithm of the collector acidity constant, pKa The experimental results indicate that flotation is prevented when about 95% of the collector is ionized. At low pH, collector adsorption decreases because of the reduction in number of hydroxylated zinc surface sites. These two effects explain why sphalerite does not float with the more acidic sulfhydryl compounds. Typical anionic collectors for sulfide minerals are short chain xanthates or dithiophosphates which are nearly completely ionized in the generally alka- line flotation circuits.1,2 Flotation mechanisms have therefore been usually interpreted in terms of ionic collector adsorption and competition with ionic depressants of the same sign as the collector. A few attempts have been made, however, to consider adsorption of neutral collector molecules. Contact angle measurements obtained by Wark and cox3 have been interpreted by Cook and Nixon4 as representing adsorption of the free acid molecules on sulfide minerals such as pyrite, galena, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite. Cook and Nixon tried to show that the free acid concentration of the collector was substantially constant along the curves relating collector addition and minimum pH for bubble adherence. However, in a review of the subject,5 Sutherland presented new data on the flotation of pyrite with mercaptobenzothiazole which did not support the hypothesis of constant concentration of either collector ions or collector free molecules. He further showed that, with the assumption of constant occupation of surface sites, both theories lead to relations between pH and collector addition having similar mathematical expressions.
