Hydraulic fracturing is of considerable interest as a possible release mechanism during operation of storage caverns in salt formations. However, field data are lacking on fluid pressures required to initiate and propagate fractures over a range of depth in U.S. salt domes. A currently active research project is outlined which has the objectives of gathering field data on hydrofracture gradients in inland and coastal domes of the Gulf Coast. A wireline minifracturing system with downhole microprocessor controls is briefly described.

The stoichiometry, structure, and stability of the internzediate phases formed between zinc and some of the rare earth (RE) metals were systematically exarnined by means of a recording effusion balance and X-ray diffraction analyses. In the La-, Ce-, PY-, Nd-, and Y-Zu systems, at or below about 600 C, the following sequences of phases (REZnx) were found: La, x = 1, 2, 4.0, 5.25, 7.3, 17/2, 11, and 13.0;' Ce, x = 1, 2, 3, 11/3, 4.3, 5.25, 7.0, 17/2,* and 11; Pr,x = 1,2, 3, 11/3 ,* 4.3, 5.3(?), 7.0, 17/2,* and 11; Nd,x = 1,2, 3,* 11/3,* 4.3, 6.5, 8.5,* and 11; Y,x = 1,2,3, 11/3, 4.5, 5.0, 17/2,* and 12.* The structure types of all these phases were classified. In addition, lattice parameters were obtained for the first time for the pluses denoted by asterisks. In the absence of de tectable valency or electronegativity effects the systesnatic trends in the results have been ascribed to the effects of' the lanthanide contraction. For example, the maximum number of zinc atoms in the coordination polyhedron surrounding the RE atom decreases from twenty-four to twenty-two to twenty as the size of the RE atom decreases. THE structures and compositions of a great many intermetallic phases (e.g., the Laves phases) are known to be based primarily, but not exclusively, on the space-filling efficiency of various modes of packing together atoms of different sizes. The valencies and electronegativities of the constituent atoms are, however, also influential. In extreme cases hypothetical intermetallic phases which fulfill the efficient spacefilling requirements may not be present in the constitutional diagram because of thermodynamic instability brought about by the operation of valency or electronegativity factors. Hence, for a detailed study of the influence of atomic size on alloy structure and composition, it would be desirable to minimize variations of valency and electronegativity. The intermetallic phases formed by the rave earths (RE) with some common partner offer an excellent opportunity for isolating the effects of size from those of valency and electronegativity. The rare earths exhibit a large, but smooth, decrease in size (the lanthanide contraction) in the series from lanthanum to lutetium when inter comparison is made for a common valence state, e.g., isolated atoms or trivalent ions. The elements yttrium and scandium are frequently included as pseudo rare earths; their sizes place them in the vicinity of dysprosium and lutetium, respectively. The electronegativities of RE elements vary by less than 10 pet. The trivalent state is the most common; however, the well-known tendency of cerium, praseodymium, and terbium to achieve higher valencies, and of samarium, europium, and ytterbium to seek lower valencies, requires that caution be exercised in the assumption of equal valencies. In the present study the existence, constitution, and structure of each of the numerous intermediate phases formed by zinc with lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, or yttrium were examined systematically and in detail. The investigation was conducted by a recording effusion balance technique and by X-ray diffraction analysis. The results enrich our knowledge of the phase diagrams of these systems. In addition, they present some clear-cut evidences of the operation of the size factor alone. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Apparatus. The mode of operation of the recording effusion balance and its application to phase studies have been discussed in detail elsewhere.' In this work, an effusion cell containing a finely divided alloy was suspended within an evacuated tube from the beam of an analytical balance. The tube was immersed in a massive molten salt bath whose temperature was controlled to within 0.5o C during each experiment. The loss in weight of the alloy owing to effusion of zinc* was continuously recorded. Two effusion cells, 1/2 in. diam by 1 in. high, were machined from tantalum rods. Two orifices were drilled laterally into the walls of each cell. The orifice areas were determined by calibration with pure zinc: cell A had a total orifice area of 6.5 x 10-41 sq cm, and cell B an orifice area of 9.8 x 10-3 sq cm. By appropriate choices of orifice area and temperature the wide range of volatilities from pure zinc to pure rare earth metal could be investigated. X-ray diffraction powder photographs were made at room temperature with a 114.6-mm Debye-Scherrer camera with both filtered CuKa radiation and filtered CrKa radiation. Lattice parameters were refined by a computer-programmed least-squares analytical treatment which incorporated appropriate extrapolation techniques.2 Frequent use was also made of a special computer program3 designed to generate a powder pattern from an assumed structure in order to verify structural assignments. In the Kaernthner Zeitschrift, No. 2, 1881, p. 53, et seq., Prof. Ledebur details some experiments on the power of various silicates of lime and alumina, magnesia and alumina, and lime, magnesia and alumina, to remove sulphur from pig-iron, from which it appears (as has long been recognized in practice) that the more basic the silicate the greater the quantity of sulphur it will take up; but also that for the same grade of silicate, this quantity is greatest for the lime-alumina silicate and least for the magnesia-alumina silicate, the lime-magnesia-alumina silicate occupying an intermediate position, and he concluded therefrom (p. 59) that, for the production of pig-iron low in sulphur, pure limestones are to be preferred to those containing magnesia. In recent years geophysical prospecting methods have become well established as important steps in economically initiating new mining ventures in the field of base-metal exploration, placer mining and water-supply problems. The value of these methods as applied to these problems has been greatly increased by new and improved instruments, and a greater degree of skill in laboratory and interpretative technique. Considerable success has been attained, with subsequent drilling checking the predicted depths within 1 to 5 per cent, on problems requiring information on thickness of fill material, depth to and contour of bedrock, extent and yardage of gravels to be mined, and location of hydrostatic water table. In these applications the geophysical work gives data comparable to drilling, and at a cost of about one-fiftieth that of drilling. Discussion of several surveys with accompanying illustrations showing geophysical methods applicable to both simple and complicated placer problems are contained in the paper. The electrical instruments for measuring electromagnetic field strength and surface potentials are described, and their use, coupled with that of other geophysical instruments in modern field procedure, is noted.:

U.S. Signs Pact With Miami Copper Miami Copper Co., of Arizona has agreed to mine lowgrade copper ores in an extension of its Globe-Miami mining district operations at a guaranteed price of 27.35[] per lb, under a contract signed with defense Materials Procurement Agency. Terms of the contract call for delivery of 230 million lb of refined copper between 1955 and 1962. DMPA said highgrade ore in the de posit will soon be exhausted and it is considered advisable to have Miami continue the operation. The Government has an option to buy 120 million lb of refined copper from present production at market prices. Miami will develop the new ore- body at its own expense-estimated at $3 million. If losses under the new contract reach a specified point, Miami may cancel the agreement. The company plans to use the block caving method in the underground operation.

Greater progress than in any previous year was accomplished by the oil industry in New Mexico in 1936. The total number of completions in the state was 631, of which 549 were oil wells, 21 were hydrocarbon gas wells, three were carbon dioxide gas wells, and 58 were dry holes. The total oil production for the year was 26,804,446 bbl. Compared with the production for 1935 of 20,228,947 bbl., this represented a gain of 32.5 per cent. Of the total production, 25,337,382 bbl. came from Lea County. The average daily nonmarginal well allowable for that county was 115 bbl. the first of the year and 86 bbl. at the close. The total estimated production of coal in the United States during the first century and a quarter of mining is shown in Table 20. This is the total of the production of the various states already shown in the various tables, and is believed to be the first statement of this sort made. No such table prepared from limited data can be accurate, but it is the writer's opinion that the totals shown are less than those actually produced. It was thought that this study would enable a reasonably accurate account of the movement of coal down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to be written. The searches made have shown that at this time the data do not exist from which such a study can be made, but some of the facts collected may be useful to future students.

A study has been made of the progressive changes in the distribution of etch-pit structures occurring during high-temperature creep in copper + 7 wt pct Al single crystals oriented with a [113] tensile axis. The two equally stressed glide systems with the highest Schmid factor would be expected to form subboundaries of the type predicted by Kear.2 The alignments of etch-pits on sections parallel to different (111} planes consistent with these types of boundaries were not observed. However, they were consistent with planar subboundaries (on a macroscopic scale). From an analysis of Amelinckx1 it may be shown that stable cross-grid dislocation boundaries may form in the primary slip planes. These boundaries form when dislocations with a Burgers vector not in the slip plane move into the plane by combination of climb and glide. THE geometry of subboundaries formed by the interaction of dislocations of two glide systems has been analyzed by Amelinckx,1 and the particular types produced by deforming fee crystals are predicted by ear.' In this paper types of boundaries which may be formed when climb as well as glide occur are discussed as this is relevant in high-temperature creep. It is assumed in the present investigation that the etch-pits observed in Cu + 7 wt pct A1 on surfaces parallel to {111} planes delineate the sites of dislocations. Although there is no direct evidence for this previous work on a-Cu/Al single crystals by Mitchell, Chevrier, Hockey, and Mon-aghan,3 would show this assumption to be reasonable. The alignments of etch-pits which form during creep are studied on sections parallel to each {111) plane. It is then deduced that these alignments are consistent with a specific type of planar subboundary. The Cu + 7 wt pct A1 single crystals had a [113] tensile axis and Fig. 1(a) shows schematically the relation of the slip planes and slip directions (as represented by tetrahedron ABCD) with reference to the tensile axis. The two equally stressed glide systems with the maximum Schmid factor namely ß-AD and (a-BD, from the analysis of Kear,2 would be expected to form the boundaries shown in Fig. l(a) and (b), also Fig. 5(a) and (b). EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The a-Cu/Al single crystals were grown and annealed in a "gettered" argon atmosphere. Chemical analysis showed the aluminum content to be uniform in each crystal and the difference between crystals was maintained to an accuracy of ± 0.25 wt pct. The initial dislocation density and mean subgrain diameter after annealing was -106 cm-2 and 250 µ, respectively. Surfaces parallel to (111) planes were produced by specially developed electrolytic machining processes. The {111} faces were next electropolished for 5 min in a solution consisting of 25 g chromium trioxide, 113 ml glacial acetic acid and 40 ml water; the applied potential was 8 v. Dislocation etch-pits were revealed using l an etchant described by 1 ml bromine, 45 ml HCl, and - 250 ml water. RESULTS In crystals strained into secondary creep at higher stresses (443 and 750 g - mm-2 at 650° C aligned rows of etch-pits parallel to slip plane traces were evident in sections parallel to the (1111, (ill), and (111) planes, see Fig. 3. As well as the longitudinal alignments in Fig. 3, well formed randomly oriented arrays indicative of an equiaxed subgrain structure are evident. At the lower stresses (100 to 230 g . mm-2) only an equiaxed structure formed during creep. The sections in Fig. 3 are from a crystal crept for 70 hr at 650°C with a CRSS of 443 g.mm-2. Two identically oriented crystals were also deformed at the same temperature and stress for 5 min and 4 hr. In the crystal crept for 5 min, the etch-pits were randomly distributed with no tendency for directional alignment, see Fig. 2(a). As shown in Fig. 2(b) aligned arrays were evident after 4 hr creep but they were not nearly so well defined as in Fig. 3. The alignments (parallel to the arrows) in Fig. 3 are consistent with the existence of boundaries in the two main slip planes a and ß. The way in which this is deduced is seen by reference to Fig. l(c), where the existence of boundaries in the a and ß planes is verified by sectioning parallel to a,ß, and d. The (111) and ß(111) planes intersect the d(111) plane along BC [101 ] and AT [011] and alignments parallel to [101] and [011] are clearly evident in Fig. 3(c) in a section parallel to the d(111) plane. Similarly the a, and ß planes in Fig. l(a) intersect each other along DC [110] and hence there will be an alignment parallel to [110 ] in sections parallel to the a-plane and the ß-plane; this is evident in Fig. 3(a) and Fig. 3(b). It is interesting to note that alignments of etch-pits consistent with the boundaries predicted by Kear2 were not observed; see Figs. l(a) and l(b). The geometry of boundaries in {111} planes as shown in Fig. l(c) is discussed later. In Fig. 4(a) the individual etch-pits are resolved and the alignments are exactly parallel to the slip trace direction [101]. However, in some areas alignments deviate away from the slip trace direction by as much as 10 to 15 deg, this is evident in Fig. 4(b), and in Fig.

IN a previous communication,l the quaternary system Ni-Cr-Ti-A1 was described in detail and it was shown how certain alloys used for high-temperature applications could be construed as consisting of Ni,Cr suitably modified by the addition of aluminum and titanium in relatively small amounts. With the correct aging treatment, the ordered face-centered-cubic Berthollide phase, y'-Ni,Al, could be precipitated from the face-centered-cubic primary y-solid solution. By increasing the proportion of titanium with respect to aluminum, it was also possible to precipitate the very brittle hexagonal-close-packed Daltonide phase, ?-Ni,Ti. From the nature of the system it seems reasonable to expect the y and y'-phases to take appreciable amounts of cobalt and iron into solid solution. In the case of the present investigation it was decided to confine the work to iron additions only. This element may be introduced in two quite distinct ways: 1) as a simple replacement for nickel; and 2) as a replacement for chromium, titanium, and aluminum. The second method of iron addition forms the basis of the present investigation, which is, in effect, a study of the pseudo-quaternary system Ni,Cr-NiPe-Ni,Ti-NLAl. For purposes of reference, Figs. 1, 2, and 3 have been included and illustrate the quaternary system Ni-Cr-Ti-A1 described in the previous paper along with sections through N&Cr-Ni,Ti-Ni,Al at 750" and 1000 "C respectively. The activities of SiO2, FeO, and Fe2O3 are calculated from previous experimental data on the activity of oxygen in Fe-Si-O melts at 1550°C. Using the oxide-activity data, the free energy of formation of fayalite from its oxides is evaluated for 1550°C. A number of investigators1-4 contributed to the study of the state of oxidation of iron in SiO,-FeO-Fe,O3 melts and the phase equilibria in the system Fe-Si-O. In a more detailed study, Schuhmann and Ensio5 and Michal and Schuhmann% easured the state of equilibrium in the SiO,-FeO-Fe,O3 melts saturated with y-iron or silica or both under low-oxygen potentials and within the temperature range 1250" to 1350°C. Similar measurements were also made by Turkdogan and Bills7,' over wide ranges of composition and oxygen potentials at 1550"C. Using the experimental data on the oxygen activities in the ternary system, Schuhmann' calculated the activities of silica and ferrous oxide in Si0,-FeO-Fe2O3 melts for 1350°C. Adequate knowledge on the activities of the constituent oxides of melts is essential in the study of reaction-equilibria and reaction-kinetics in oxide-melts. With this in view, the activities of oxides in SiO2-FeO-Fe2O3 melts at 1550°C are computed using the experimental data of Turkdogan and Bills7'8 on the oxygen activities in these melts.

A study has been made of the crushing and grinding circuits by the Portland Cement Association in nine cement plants. Five of the plants used the wet process and four, the dry method. Both raw and clinker grinding were studied in the four dry processing plants. The raw materials used varied considerably from plant to plant. Actual power consumption data were obtained for the majority of the grinding mills in these plants. Previously representative raw and clinker samples had been obtained from the nine plants, and Bond1 and Hardgrove2 grindability tests were run on these samples. All pertinent data concerning the grinding mills, such as mill size and speed, ball charge size and weight, size distribution of feed, and discharge materials were also obtained. Thus it became possible to calculate the actual horsepower used by the various mills, and to compare this figure to the theoretical horsepower as calculated by several different methods.

On the basis of a statistical thermodynamic treatment of the data of smithz2 on the activity of carbon in austenite, a Darken and smith23 deduced that the interaction energy, wy, between carbon atoms occupying nearest-neighboring interstitial sites is repulsive. Aaronson, Domian, and pound 24 (ADP) have applied two different statistical thermodynamic analyses to the same data. One analysis, a composite of the treatments of Darken and Smith,23 Speiser and Spret-nak," and Kaufman, Radcliffe, and Cohen,26 primarily takes account of the positional entropic effects of wy in dilute solutions. The other, due to Lacher 27 and Fowler and Guggenheim," is also applicable to more concentrated solid solutions. The equations which both analyses produce for a,, can be rearranged so that, when In a,, is plotted against the appropriate function of the carbon content of the austenite, the plot will have a slope of unity when the correct value of wy is employed. Since no other constant need be simultaneously evaluated in order to make this determination, ascertaining the most probable value of wy from Smith's data on the bases of these analyses was an elementary problem in least-squares statistics. ADP demonstrated that the wy's obtained from both analyses vary with temperature in a statistically significant manner. McLellan, Gerrard, Horowitz, and sprague 29 (MGHS), on the other hand, have recently made a new statistical thermodynamic study of a,, and have concluded from this study that wy is independent of temperature. The equation which they derived for a,, is: where 0 = ratio of the mole fraction of carbon atoms to that of iron atoms, z = number of sites from which occupancy is excluded by the presence of a carbon atom and the repulsive character of its interaction with nearest-neighboring carbon atoms (z = zb in Ref. 24), and x = a geometric parameter taking account of overlapping of the exclusion shells of nearby carbon atoms. z is 1 when wy = 0 and 13 when wy = Q. For a given value of z there is a definite value of X . In the absence of an equation connecting z and X, MGHS computed geometrically the value of x at several integral values of z; x increases from 0.47 to 8.67 as z is increased from 2 to 5. MGHS fitted Eq. [I] to the a,, data of Ellis, Davidson, and Bodsworth30 at 925° and 1050°C and to the data of smithz2 at 1000°C. Confining z to integral values in the range 4 to 6, and also somewhat restricting AG, the values of z, X, and AG were sought which would minimize the average root mean square percent deviation, D, of the calculated a,, values from those obtained experimentally. Finding that D was almost always smallest when z = 5, they concluded that z is independent of temperature. Since:23, 26 where R = gas constant and T = absolute temperature, and w,, was considered to be similarly invariant, this statement cannot be strictly true. The temperature range employed, however, was small and the interval between the values of z tested was sufficiently large so that the results could still be consistent with a constant The statistical treatment of the a,, data applied by MGHS is clearly quite approximate. Since more than three values of a,, are available at each temperature, z, and X, and AG have actually been over deter mined, rather than underdetermined as their treatment implies. In order to make more complete and exact use of the a,, data, we shall employ the Legendre Method of Least Squares, as described by Whittaker and Robinson. This technique permits conversion of the overdetermined system of equations produced by the substitution into Eq. [I] of the available pairs of a,, and 0 data at a given temperature into an even determined system. Solution of the latter system yields the most probable value of each of the three constants. This procedure will allow a statistically rigorous test to be made of the conclusion drawn by MGHS in respect of the temperature dependence of In order to obtain linear iiequations of conditions" from Eq. [I], the exact values of the three unknown constants are replaced by G/RT = =/RT + y, where z, i, and aG are estimated values of the constants. The production of petroleum in the Rocky Mountain district increased from 27,104,436 bbl. in 1929 to 33,048,630 bbl. in 1930. This increase was due to the development in southeastern New Mexico; which is in reality a portion .of the West Texas province. Disregarding production in southeastern New Mexico, the Rocky Mountain district produced 25,799,027 bbl. in 1929 and 23,164,988 bbl. in 1930, a decrease of 2,634,039 bbl. for the period. The daily production in January, 1930, averaged 70,839 bbl. for the entire district and in December, 1930, the daily production was 98,995 bbl. Total production by states is given in Table 1. Three important discoveries of oil and one of gas occurred in the district during 1930 in structures not, previously known to contain oil or gas. Oil was discovered in Dry Creek structure, Carbon County, Mont.; in the Midway structure, Natrona County, near Casper, Wyo.; and in the Greasewood structure, Weld County, Colo., northwest of Fort Morgan. Gas was discovered in the Bell Rock structure in Moffat County, western Colorado. Seven deep tests in as many different fields encountered oil in lower horizons than those already exploited. Seven mines with important production records in the Coeur d'Alene lie adjacent to the Gem stocks -the Frisco (Gem), Hercules, Interstate, Rex (Sixteen to One), Success (Granite), Sunset, and Tamarack. Old records are incomplete, but avail- able data given in Table I show these mines have produced 10,550,721 tons of ore containing more than 50 million oz of silver, more than 1.5 billion lb of lead, and about 1 billion lb of zinc (approximately 1.25 million tons of lead and zinc combined). Average ore grade is 4.8 oz of silver per ton, 7.2 pct Pb, and 4.6 pct Zn. This impressive production represents about 12 pct of the District's yield. At present metal prices, with modern beneficiation, the gross value would be more than $400 million.

In 1910, he was with the Hidalgo Guadalupe, Pachuca, Mexico, and in 1911 was engineer with the Gualcola Mines Co., at Tuquerres, Colombia. In 1913, he returned to the Sout.hwest, and was employed for that yea.r by the Inspiration Cons. Copper Co. at Miami, and in the middle of the following year he became engineer with the Detroit Copper Co., at Morenci. In the autumn of 1914, Mr. Reece, stirred by his English blood, resolved to return to England to take part in the war. At this time he wrote "I think it will be better for me to resign my membership. If I come through all right, I will apply for re-election." The Institute, however, instead of accepting Mr. Reece's resignation, voted him an indefinite leave of absence, and this precedent soon crystallized into the regular procedure, now in force, of remitting the dues of members in active service. On Dec. 17, 1914, he wrote from Montreal that he fully expected to go over shortly in the second contingent from Canada, with Borden's Armored Brigade, operating with armored motor cars. As he said "this will be active enough service to satisfy any enthusiast, as they are used generally for reconnaissance duty." Soren Ringlund Soren Ringlund died suddenly on July 24, 1918, at Fort Logan, Colo., where he was engaged in service with the Medical Department of the U. S. Army. With a total value to date of well over $200,000.000.00 for its ore production, the Tintic mining district, which is about 100 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, ranks as one of the three main ore producing areas of Utah. In it are located the biggest silver mines of the country, silver having been the chief metal produced in the camp since its start. Tintic's silver production to date has a total value of over $1 00,000,000, approximately half of the value of the camp's ore production, the balance being roughly divided among lead, gold and copper. Discovery of the camp was made in the late sixties. Lack of transportation and ore reduction facilities delayed extensive development of the area for nearly a decade. In recent years Tintic's ore production has ranged from 350,000 to 400,000 tons annually. In 1924 the camp produced one-eighth of the silver produced in the nation with an output of 7,729,700 ounces. Its lead production was 77,765,000 pounds and its gold production 26,285 ounces.

The North Texas district incorporated in this paper corresponds with the Railroad Commission's District No. 9, and includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Jack, Knox, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger, and Young.† Table I,Oil and Gas Production in North Texas District, has been changed to conform with the nomenclature of pools designated by the Commission in order to facilitate compilation of the data, since most of the companies operating in the area are coming more and more to recognize one central authority in the matter of naming each new oil pool. No effort is being made to discuss the structural characteristics of the region, since it is generally known by oil men that most of the oil and gas comes from Pennsyl-vanian, with some of less importance from the Mississippian and Ordovician. Development during 1944 There were 1550 wells drilled during 1944, an increase of 450. Of this number, 677 were completed as oil wells, and 11 as gassers. Production increased 1,505,025 bbl., making the year's total 43,172,005 bbl. of oil having an average gravity of 40". Development generally, however, was somewhat disappointing. The 47 new pools, extensions, or new pay horizons in old fields, had a combined initial production of only 19,146 bbl. It is estimated that these wells added approximately 10,000,000 bbl. to the reserves. The largest single addition to the reserves was in the Caddo conglomerate in the Hildreth pool, Montague County. During the year, 66 wells were completed as the result of three extensions, I to 136 miles west, northwest and north of the field. Young, Archer, and Clay were the most active counties. Eleven new potential - oil fields were developed in Young County, nine in Archer and nine in Clay. Outlook for 1945 In spite of the fact that exploration as a whole was disappointing in 1944, prospects for increased development are bright for 1945. At the close of last year, 2.1 geophysical crews were operating in the district, which, together with the Ohio Oil Company's No. I W. R. Ross, a wildcat Strawn discovery in King County, 1 1/2 miles beyond the west boundary of district 9, stimulated a lease play extending over four counties.
