It was developed not so much to find a quick method as it was to facilitate certain work which I was carrying on a couple of years ago. I had a great many determinations to make and the planimeter method was very slow, as was the Heyn method, and both of them were laborious, so I tried to shorten the time of the determinations. Since preparing the present paper, Dr. T. M. The most significant trends appear to be an increased use of electromagnetic and geochemical methods. The most promising instrumental developments are airborne electromagnetic equipment, a magnetometer based on nuclear resonance, and reflection seismic equipment operable to depths less than 100 ft. Work in progress may lead to a one-man magnetometer capable of high precision and continuous recording.

Blasting to prepare orebodies for in situ leaching usually involves extraordinary conditions which sometimes require special and innovative techniques. To date several unusually large blasts have been made for leaching with results that are very encouraging. Among the factors considered when designing these large blasts are orebody shape and depth, rock properties, vibration and damage potential, loading logistics, and safety. All of these factors, and others, are discussed with an effort made to put each of them into its proper perspective.

Considerable interest has been shown, during recent years, in the possibilities of developing oil fields in the South American Republics, now that the exhaustion of our present fields can be seen in the not very distant future. The demand for fuel oil and its products has been increasing far more rapidly than our increment of production during the last few years. Increase of consumption has been largely curtailed by the lack of sufficient supply. The main factors that have contributed to our previous neglect of the southern fields have been as follows:, (a) Lack of sufficient demand for the product. (b) Competition with producing fields, having large production, low cost, and better geographical position, such as Tampico, Mexico. (c) Greater interest in home fields with ready market at hand. (d) Our ignorance of southern economic and geologic conditions, clue to the distance between those areas and our financial centers. (e) Economic conditions in the southern countries, necessitating high costs of exploration and exploitation of the fields.

To the question, "Do the Pennsylvania anthracites contain phosphorus ?" asked at the last meeting of the Institute during the discussion on the metallurgical value of Western lignites, I can now give a definite answer. Through the kindness of a gentleman connected with the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, and another connected with one of the principal ironworks on the Lehigh, there was sent to the Iron-masters' Laboratory a number of samples of the coals now largely shipped from the Schuylkill and Lehigh regions. Seventeen of these I examined for their contents of ash and phosphorus, and obtained results as follows

The final results of the operation of the Cananea test dumps are discussed. Scale-up factors between shake-flask tests, column tests and the large test dumps are established for the Cananea ore. The formation of clay layers, which formed inside the dumps and markedly affected extraction, as well as secondary enrichment, are discussed.

Would it be possible for the author to enlarge on this very important matter of "cataclysmic types of failures? " J. J. Kanter.—Of course, it is always a delicate matter to discuss specific failures. I would prefer to keep the present discussion on fundamentals and principles. H. L. Burghof.*—Mr. Kanter, I should like to ask what you consider the responsibility of the designer in avoiding stress concentrations that would lead to these types of failures? J. J. Kanter.—lt was my feeling in looking over the papers of this symposium that they were significantly lacking in consideration of what happens to the metals when strained under conditions that lead to rupture. Often creep tests are run that produce only a fractional percentage of the deformation, in several thousand hours. That kind of information gives the designer no assurance whatever that cracks will not result in his structure at points where stress concentrations, and therefore deformation concentrations, exist. I think anyone in this day and age who presents a paper on creep should incorporate with those studies a thorough investigation of creep rupture if it is expected to make an impression upon the design engineer.

We are pleased to confirm some of the mechanical data presented by Dr. Detert on the 18 pct Ni marag-ing steel.15 Bar 3 in. in diam and containing 0.02 wt pct C, 18.5 Ni, 8.9 Co, 5.1 MO, 0.55 Ti, 0.05 Al, and balance iron has been examined in our laboratory. IN the flotation of iron ores laurylamine derivatives have been used for considerable time.1, 2' To effect satisfactory separation of the gangue, pre-dominantly silica, from the iron oxide minerals, the addition of specific depressants for the iron oxides has been found necessary. Starches and starch products have been used for this purpose.V here is, however, very little published information on the effects of these materials and other variables on this process. In some cases it has been found that prior acid scrubbing and desliming are essential," and depending upon the efficiency of the subsequent washing step, there will be accompanying changes in pH. It was the object of this investigation to test and observe the effects of the above factor as well as to examine and compare the action of various starches and starch products. Ore Preparation The ore used in this experiment was a wash-ore tailing obtained from the western Mesabi range. Microscopic examination and x-ray analysis of the ore showed it to consist of hematite, goethite, and quartz. Physical properties of the iron minerals ranged from hard and crystalline to earthy and ocherous. The quartz grains were discolored either because of iron-oxide inclusions or because of a sur-face coating of iron oxide. The ore assayed 27.52

Theory, operational characteristics, and indicated precision and accuracy of analytical methods based on vacuum extraction, equilibrium pressure, and combustion approaches are reviewed. At the present time vacuum extraction at 1400°C and the equilibrium pressure method are recommended for determination of hydrogen in titanium and titanium-rich alloys. UNTIL a few years ago the role of hydrogen in titanium was an unknown factor with regard to its effect on the physical and mechanical properties of the metal. However, following the work of Jaffee and othersa-" it is now generally acknowledged that hydrogen has a degrading effect on titanium and its alloys. The chief manifestations are a decrease in impact strength in -systems and delayed cracking in a-ß systems. Since hydrogen does have a de- grading effect on titanium it is essential to control it within tolerable limits. It then follows that procedures for quantitative estimation of hydrogen are a primary requirement for the industry. For greatest benefit these methods should be simple, rapid, and precise. In addition to having these virtues, methods must be easy to duplicate in both equipment and technique to gain widespread use. After inherent accuracy has been established, the, required precision to make a method acceptable is dependent largely on the nature of the work at hand. The Bemco mine area is within the Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rock terrain of the New Jersey Highlands province. Rocks In the area include a pyroxene granite, a hornblende granite, a quartz-oligoclase gneiss and a pegmatite and its host rock, a lens of amphibolite which becomes a sulfide-rich pyroxenite near the ore zone. The ore-bearing zone occurs along the hanging wall and foot-wall contact of the pegmatite which was emplaced discordantly into the amphibolite-pyroxenite.
