Methods of utilizing flocculents as settling and filter aids for mineral processing slurries are reviewed. Broad chemical classifications and techniques for proper dilution, multiple addition, and combination treatments are discussed. A variety of custom built and commercially available systems for makeup and delivery of flocculents to the application points are in use throughout the mining industry. Those concepts which, in the author's opinion, are particularly important to the successful makeup and we of flocculants are presented in relationship to the available makeup and feed systems. Actual industrial applications are included in the presentation.

A method of chemically polishing silver for metal-lographic examination has been developed. The samples are prepared by polishing on 0, 2/0, and 3/0 paper. They are then polished on 600 micro-cut paper, followed by a final mechanical polish on a cloth containing 5µ diamond paste. The samples are then chemically polished in a solution of 100 cc of saturated chromic acid and 5 cc of a 5 pct HC1 solution. The chemical polishing is performed by swabbing with a cotton ball saturated with the solution. During the chemical polishing, the sample is rinsed frequently in running water. Polishing in this manner for 5 min is sufficient to remove the strained material from the previous polishing operations. The amount of material removed is approximately 4µ/min. The surface obtained is flat and free of pits. Fig. 1 is an interference micrograph of a silver surface polished by this technique. Uniquely colored, thin-bedded quartzite is quarried between Crossville and Crab Orchard in Cumberland County, Tenn. It is produced in all sizes up to the limits of transportation from beds usually ranging in thickness from less than Vi in. to 6 in. The stone is very resistant to wear and weathering and is marketed throughout the country for many different purposes in exterior and interior construction. The annual production exceeds 36,000 tons, valued at nearly $1,000,000. THE building stone of the Crab Orchard District is a fine-grained, thin-bedded sandstone which is so strongly cemented by silica that it may be classed as quartzite. As used in this paper the term building stone includes dimension stone, rubble, ashlar, flagstone, and rough broken stone. The Crab Orchard District is in the central portion of Cumberland County, Tenn. It is named from the town of Crab Orchard near which the stone was quarried first for industrial use. The heart of the district is an area of some 1200 acres from 1 to 3 miles east of Crossville which is 70 miles west of . Knoxville and 125 miles east of Nashville (fig. 1). At the present time, there are about 15 quarries worked by companies and individuals. Geology: The Crab Orchard District is on the Cumberland Plateau, or Cumberland Mountain as it is called frequently. Most of the area is characterized by a comparatively even surface from 1800 to 2000 ft in elevation and is drained by streams flowing into the Tennessee River. Included in the district are two quarries located 7 miles west of Cross-ville and this area is drained by tributaries of the Cumberland River. Most of the quarries are located near the 1800-ft contour which is just below the general upland surface. The surface rock over most of the district is the Rockcastle sandstone which has a thickness of about 260 ft.1 It is the topmost of the six formations of

THE first discovery of zinc 011 the property now worked by this company was made by the celebrated mineralogist, Prof. William Theodore Rapper, in 1845. Different claimants kept the property in continual litigation till 1861, when everything was satisfactorily settled by the purchase of the land by the company, who have worked it ever since. The mines are situated in a valley, four miles south of Bethlehem, Pa., in Lehigh County. The valley is from two to three miles broad, and is bounded 011 the north and south by syenitic hills. Syenite underlies the valley, and upon this is deposited the Potsdam sandstone, then a layer of slate, and, finally, a dolomitic limestone, belonging to the Chazy or Black River formation, in which the zinc deposits are inclosed. The rocks occur in folds, and have evidently been subjected to tremendous pressure from below, the zinc deposit being found in an anticlinal axis, in nearly vertical veins. It has long been supposed that, regardless of the mechanism by which grain boundaries increase the hardness of a ductile metal, the effect should be linearly proportional to the grain boundary area. At the present time two methods for determining grain boundary area in an isotropic aggregate are available. The first, derived by Angus and Summers,' presumes that the grain boundary area is equal to 3vn, where n is the number of grains per sq mm in a random section through the metal. This estimate is based upon the assumption that the grains are equivalent to cubes whose faces correspond with the grains as observed in the micro-section. Measurements on copper, bronze, and a brass showed that a nearly linear relation exists between 3vn and hardness. This is illustrated, for the case of brass, in Fig. 1. The second method, developed independently by Smith and Guttman2 and by Duff in, Meussner, and Rhines,3 is absolute and employs a simple linear intercept count for measuring grain boundary area. It involves no assumptions with respect to the shape and distribution of the grain boundaries. THE problem of the metalliferous veins has always been an outstanding one in the science of ore deposits. In recent years interest has been stimulated by Spurr, who maintains that veins have consolidated from magmas that have densities as great as the densities of ordinary rocks. Lindgren published a noteworthy paper1 in 1926, in which he supports the theory that veins are deposited chiefly by hot waters. Lindgren's paper was discussed by Singewald, Spurr, Kemp, Anderson, Colony, Bateman, Porter and others. The discussion, in the main, was centered on the interpretation of fragments that are included in veins. This paper also treats the problems of fragments in veins and includes a reply to a review by Spurr2 of a bulletin by Larsen, and myself published by the United States Geological Survey on the geology and ore deposits of Creede, Colorado. Mineral veins containing fragments of the wall rock are common. At many places the fragments are completely, isolated, one from the other, and are entirely surrounded by vein matter. It has been stated that the vein matter around the fragments was heavier than the fragments and that the latter were floated in a magma. J. E. Spurr, who is the leading advocate of this hypothesis,4 urges that normal mineral veins were deposited by solutions heavy enough to float fragments of the country rock, and it is mainly on this relation that he bases his theory that veins are deposited by solidification of magmas. If it can be shown that vein-forming solutions have a specific gravity greater than rock (2.77), one is justified in regarding them as true magmatic solutions. It is shown later in this, paper,. however, that at Lead, S. D., water not more highly concentrated' than ordinary drinking water is depositing vein matter around fragments of schist and of steel in such a manner that the fragments are completely isolated and completely surrounded by the mineral cement.

The crushing of ore, as defined by Taggart, is "usually a stage process, utilizing . . . machines especially suitable for the reduction of particular sizes. . . . down to a final stage, employed for the reduction of the finest sizes. ... In contradistinction, comminution to 20-mesh or finer is called grinding. There is a twilight zone in which the product is 6, 10, or 14-mesh limiting size which is either crushing or grinding. ..." Since the data in this paper pertain to a rod-mill operation, comminuting a particular ore size of ¾ in. to a final stage, coarser than 20-mesh, the rod mill is designated as a "fine crusher machine" in this paper. The published literature discloses a wealth of data regarding a rod mill as a fine-grinding machine but relatively little as a fine-crushing operation. Typical of the latter operation is: (I) a description by F. J. Tuck2 in which a fine-crushing rod mill replaced crushing rolls and (2) a description by the present authors3 in which a fine-crushing rod mill was installed instead of a collventional fine-crushing machine. The experience of the authors is that a definite distinction must he made between the rod mill functioning as a fine crusher and as a fine-grinding machine. As a fine crushing machine it prepares relatively large amounts of ore for a subsequent fine grinding operation; as a grinding machine, it grinds relatively small amounts of ore to some predetermined finished product. Pulp Movement and Action in Mill In considering the work performed by a fine-crushing rod mill, it seems important to understand just what takes place within the mill. We were inspired to study this matter by a paper by E. W. Davis,4 which indicated that definite water classification of ore particles took place in a ball mill. However, in thinking of the rod-mill action from this point of view, we were confronted with the fact that our rod-mill discharge product showed no evidence of action by water classification. The Tennessee Copper Co. ore is relatively high in sulphides, and the gangue rock and the sulphides are of about the same hardness. In the presence of any action by classification, the coarser sizes are definitely very lean in sulphide minerals.

Probably a more descriptive title would be "Much Ado About Nothing." By "nothing," of course, I refer to the porosity which is the main feature of this type of bearing. Porosity has a decided effect on the manufacturing techniques, the structure and physical properties, the oil content, and on the installation and service of oil-retaining porous bronze bearings. A simple curve can be drawn by plotting specific gravity along the abscissa and percentage of porosity by volume on the ordinate. A bronze composition, analyzing 89 Per cent copper, 9.75 Per cent tin, and 1.25 per cent graphite, has an absolute solid specific gravity of 8.5. At this specific gravity, of course, occurs the point of zero porosity. Conversely, at loo per cent porosity, the specific gravity is zero. A similar curve can be drawn for bearings impregnated with oil; the only change being that the specific gravity at loo per cent oil will be 0.89 if we assume that that is the specific gravity of the lubricant. The curve is useful in determining the oil content by volume for any specific gravity. The normal range of oil content for porous bronze bearings of this composition is from 35 to 16 per cent, which is in the specific gravity range of from 5.8 to 7.3. In addition to the amount of porosity, the type of porosity is important. The first consideration here is that the porosity must be intercommunicating. To contact the commercial OPAP-kerosene solution with CH3OH – H20 solution, we used the appropriate concentration of DOPAP / MOPAP solvent. By using this treated OPAP solvent, uranium can be recovered from wet-process phosphoric acid. Electric DC power is supplied on the dual side of the ion-exchange membrane of a specially designed box-type mixer settler. U(VI) is reduced to U(IV) in the cathode and U(IV) is oxidized to U(VI) in the anode. Uranium is extracted in the cathode by treating it with OPAP solvent. Next the uranium is stripped from the loaded OPAP solvent by concentrated phosphoric acid in the anode. After 300 hours of continuous operation total recovery of uranium is as much as 95%.

There are two main sources of the water that floods productive oil or gas sands. The water may rise from the lower depths of the producing stratum, or it may come from beds above or below the oil-bearing formation. Usually the recovery of oil is decreased by water entering the oil sands, and most oil-field waters, especially those of deep wells, tend to foster the formation of an emulsion, which is expensive to treat. This paper deals with a method of distinguishing between waters that encroach upon oil-bearing beds from sources in the same stratum and waters that reach the oil sands from horizons above. In order to remedy effectually water difficulties in oil and gas wells, it is absolutely necessary to determine the source of the invading water. Sometimes evidence such as the structural relations between the strata penetrated by deighboring wells and those found in the well under investigation is not adequate; also, data from drill logs and well records, from mechanical tests made on the wells by plugs, testers, drilling tools, etc., and from tests by chemical indicators such as eosin and Venetian red, may be unsatisfactory, for such data may fail to locate the source of the infiltrating waters. As a resort in such cases, the application of chemical analyses, that is, the comparison of an analysis of the water in question with that of typical waters from the various water horizons in that particular district, has in certain instances proved of value. This method has been used to advantage in the Westside Coalinga field of California, where the source of water may be fairly definitely determined , from its composition. The chief conclusions concerning the chemistry of the oil-field waters in California by G. S. Rogers1 are: "Oil-field water is not necessarily salty, as is generally believed, and may not be even slightly salty to the taste. The degree of concentration of chloride in such water is governed primarily by local conditions and is not affected by the position of the water in relation to oil. in this paper, the theory of elasticity has been applied to the rock about a deep well, It is assumed that the rock has a modulus of . elasticity and a Poisson's ratio and that the theory of elasticity applies. It is necessary to know or assume the state of stress existing in the rock before it is penetrated by the well drill. The application of this theory indicates that stress concentration of shear, tensions, and compressions about the bore hole are of a high order. This is particularly true when a horizontal compressive stress exists in one direction only in the formation before drilling. If such an initial state of stress exists before drilling, then the rock will have stress concentrations of both tension and compression at the same elevation and of such magnitude that failure of the rock is likely. Accompanying these is a shearing stress of large proportion which is likely to produce spalling of the well walls. Internal pressure applied to the well bore will relieve the extreme compression but not the tension and has little effect upon the shear. Plastic deformation of the rock through a geological time tends to mitigate the stress concentrations. IntroductioN It has long been known that the stresses about holes and re-entrant corners of elastic solids under the influence of loads are different and generally more intense than those imposed upon the body else- where. Stress concentration at a re-entrant corner can be reduced by increasing the radius of the fillet at the corner. Stress concentration at the end of a crack in a plate undergoing either tension or compression Can be relieved appreciably by drilling a hole at the very end of the crack. Also, stresses can be increased in an elastic body in tension or compression by making a hole in it. The stress concentration is greatest at the edge of the hole. Considerable knowledge of the stresses which exist about the bore hole of a deep well may be had by applying our knowledge of engineering mechanics; or more particularly the theory of elasticity. It is, of course, necessary to make the assumption that the rock is elastic and behaves as an elastic solid, that is, that it obeys Hooke's law, has a modulus of elasticity, and a Poisson's ratio. It is also necessary to know, Or assume, the state of stress which exists in the rock prior to the penetration of the drill. With this knowledge it is possible to compute the stresses about the bore hole. The problem can be simplified by considering several simple cases separately and then by applying the principle of superposition to solve the more complex cases which are made up of the simpler ones. Among the new devices for cheapening the cost of material entering into the manufacture of iron is the mechanical drawing of coke, by which the coke from bee-hive ovens is extracted with a minimum of manual labor. About twenty years ago, an ordinary plate-conveyer was put in use at the plant of bee-hive coke-ovens owned by the firm of Bell Bros. & Co., near Middlesboro, England. This conveyer ran close along the front of the ovens, and carried the coke to the cars. The ovens were drawn by hand, and a very great saving in cost was secured, as one man could draw and clean out twice as many ovens after the conveyer was put in use—he having no forking to do, and the coke being carried away as fast as it was drawn to the mouth of the oven. The next step was further to eliminate hand-labor as far as possible; and Mr. Thomas Smith of the Thorncliffe Iron Works, near Sheffield, patented in 1891 the machine for drawing coke which I here describe. This machine, the outcome of several years of experimenting, has now been in successful use since 1891, and there are between twenty and thirty of them in operation at present, and others building. The machine, as may be seen from Figs. 1 and 2, consists of a wedge-shaped shovel of proper width and thickness, connected with a steel rack of sufficient length to reach the back of the oven. The rack is supported by rolls, and guided by a device operated by a hand-wheel, which directs the shovel in the oven. The rack is driven by a pinion on a vertical shaft carrying a bevel-gear on the upper end. This bevel-gear is driven by another on the engine-shaft. 1. Haulage Tests on Coal-mine Cars THE haulage of coal from the face to the tipple is an important enough link in the production of coal to deserve its full share of study and care. In order to obtain a better understanding of mine haulage conditions, a series of tests and investigations has been made which promises to hasten the improvement of present conditions. For hauling coal through the mine and on the surface, locomotives are required, the size and power consumption of which depend on the resistance to motion offered by the mine cars. This resistance is principally caused by gravity and hearing friction. The effect of gravity can be reduced to a minimum by a suitable layout of the haulageways; that is, by arranging the grades in favor of the loaded trips, and by fixing the percentage of grade to that value which gives the lowest power consumption for loaded and empty trains. The bearing friction, which is considerably greater than is generally realized, can be easily reduced to a negligible quantity by the installation of a suitable anti-friction bearing that will stand the rough use and abuse of coal-mine service. The present investigation will deal with flexible roller bearings in comparison with ordinary plain bearings.

OCHRE is a semimineral composed by Nature of earth and a tincture of yellow caused by a fumosity of lead ore. By itself it is a material without any [38] metal, although when it is used in smelting it helps to melt the harsh and sour ores of metals. I do not know that it has any other use, except to painters. Bole is also a red viscous earth which has a very astringent and drying nature. It has no very apparent smell or taste, and I think that the cause of its redness lies in the fumosities of iron ore, for it is a companion to this and is found in its mines. It is an efficacious medicine against any poison and in this capacity has an action like terra sigillata* or perhaps better. In
