Over the past ten years a series of investigations have been conducted to determine some of the pnysical processes involved in breaking rock with confined concentrated charges. Detailed discussions of many of these investigations have been published elsewhere.1-6 Laboratory experiments made by other investigators using Hopkinson pressure-bar techniques have shown that solid materials are fractured in tension by the reflection of an incident compressive stress pulse at a free surface.7-12 In these tests a small charge of explosive is placed in contact with one end of a bar. Detonation produces some plastic flow and crushing of the bar near the charge and generates a compressive stress pulse that travels along the length of the bar. At the free end of the bar the compressive stress pulse is reflected back into the bar as a tensile stress pulse. If the tensile strength of the bar is exceeded during this reflection process, a tensile fracture normal to the length of the bar is produced, and the broken end of the bar moves forward with a constant velocity equal to the average particle velocity trapped in the broken fragment. The new surface formed by the fracture becomes the new free end of the bar that reflects the remaining portion of the incident compressive stress pulse. This process is repeated any number of times until all of the incident stress pulse is reflected. Hino has demonstrated this kind of breakage for three rock types—marble, granite, and sandstone." He has defined a blastibility coefficient, B, as the ratio of compressive strength, C, to tensile strength, T, thus: C The quantity B is the maximum number of slabs that can be produced by reflection breakage. Normally fewer slabs are produced because of loss of energy as the stress pulse travels through the rock. Fig. 1 illustrates reflection-type fracture for a triangular compressive stress pulse. The number of slabs produced by the reflection breakage process is the first whole number less than the ratio of the peak stress of the incident pulse to the tensile breaking stress of the solid. Thus the number of slabs is given by the thickness of each slab is given by and the total length of rock broken is given by N = number of slabs S - peak stress in incident pulse T = tensile strength of the rock F = fall length of incident stress pulse h = thickness of each slab D = total length of rock broken During the reflection process the particle velocity at the free surface is twice the particle velocity in the incident stress pulse. Thus the velocity with which the broken fragments move forward is given by where v, = velocity of broken fragment, and v = average particle velocity contained in that portion of the incident pulse trapped in the broken fragment. Results of these laboratory experiments cannot be applied directly to rock blasting where the explosive charge is placed in a drillhole. In laboratory tests the charge is unconfined and in contact with the rock in only one direction. In a drillhole additional confinement is offered by the rock surrounding the charge and by the stemming placed above it. This additional confinement may be enough to allow the explosive gases to do additional work on the rock during their expansion. Other writers have discussed possible effects of gas expansion'on rock breakage.13-10 However, very few experimental data are available to determine to what extent expansion of the gases is responsible for rock fragmentation. The USBM has studied the physical processes involved in breaking rock with confined concentrated charges by using simple crater tests breaking to one free surface. Crater tests have been performed in four rock types: granite, sandstone, marlstone, and chalk. Table I gives some physical properties of these rocks. Fig. 2 shows plan and section drawings of two typical crater tests and illustrates some of the test variables measured. For these tests the charge was placed at the bottom of the drillhole and primed with an electric cap. The hole was stemmed to the collar with sand and the charge detonated. A VEIN may be defined as an aggregation of mineral matter, more or less tabular or lenticular in form, which was deposited from solution and is of later origin than the inclosing rock. This definition differs from the one found in many text-books in that no assumption is made as to the origin of the space occupied by the vein or the manner in which the mineral matter was deposited. In the present paper the writer purposes to discuss the mechanics of vein formation, and does not wish to begin by begging the question. The origin of ore deposits has been diligently investigated in recent years, but, while much has been written concerning the chemistry of the process, the physical side of the question has received less attention. The source of the ore minerals; the chemical composition of ore-hearing solutions; the relative importance of magmatic and meteoric waters as agents of concentration; and the causes of mineral precipitation have all been discussed at length. On the other hand, little has been written concerning the mechanics of vein formation, and the theories given in text-hooks today are essentially the same as those developed by the early Cornish and Saxon miners. Early investigators often regarded both veins and dikes as igneous in origin, but today the theory that vein minerals have been deposited from solutions, either liquid or gaseous, is firmly established. The latter view is supported by the fact that many vein-forming minerals are not found in unaltered igneous rocks; by evidence obtained in the laboratory regarding the solubility of minerals; by the presence of many ore minerals in hot-spring waters; by the occurrence of some veins in regions consisting exclusively of unaltered sedimentary rocks; by evidence as to the temperature at which some minerals are formed; and by the absence of mineral segregation due to difference in specific gravity. There is still, however, much difference of opinion as to whether certain tabular-shaped 'masses should be classed as veins or as dikes. Some of

A short discission is given of the cryotron us a supercozductitzg- switch. The parameters of interest such as gaiz, critical gate current, critical control current, and critical surface current density ave described. The photomask-photoresist process makes possible the study of much narrower dimensioned cryotrons than previously possible using mask stencils. Data is given for the above parameters as a function of width, thickness, temperuture, and crossing ratio. Photographs of the various circuits used are shown. The techniques involved in making connection to the circuits and the precautions taken to avoid side effects in the measurements are discussed. In particular data is given for critical currents of sipercotzducting. lines down to 2X 104 in. A vise in critical surface current density is obserced jor the strallev lines in both lead and tin. A discussion of the ihact of these measurements in the design of future cryotron circuitry is given. In addition to the improvement in device density achieved by simple scale reduction. additonal gains in density may result through improved device form factor. THE cryotron is a superconducting current switch, invented by D. A. Buck.' Fig. 1 shows a typical crossed-film cryotron. Usually the gate is made of tin and the control is made of lead. The critical gate current, is the current that drives the gate resistive with zero current flowing in the control. The critical control current, I is defined as the current in the control necessary to switch the gate resistive with a small monitoring current in the gate. The gain of the device, G, is defined as Since for uniform thin films G should be proportional to the gate width divided by the control width, it is convenient to define the critical surface current density, Jcg, to be the critical gate current divided by the gate wldth. The data which follows will show that, for a given control width, I, is relatively constant. Thus, by measuring Jcg the change in gain as a function of gate width may be measured without measuring I,.

IT is customary to make an alloy of copper in the same way, not to increase its quantity as with gold or silver, but to corrupt it for the art of casting and to destroy a certain natural viscosity in it. For this result it is accompanied by tin and also, sometimes, brass. But its proper and true alloy is fine tin, except, however, when you wish to make hammered works. For these, copper must be pure and without any trace [of impurity], otherwise it cannot be hammered thin, gilded in the fire, drawn into a wire, or made into vessels for use as is customary; but in casting, tin is almost essential. When you come to this association, just as it changes nature and appearance according to the proportion of tin which you give it, so it changes name and is no longer called copper but bronze, or, for a greater distinction of the quantity of tin for every hundred or more of copper, it is called by skilled workmen metal of more or less fineness as it contains more or less tin. This is recognized by the whiteness and brittleness: changing from red, which is the color of copper, it becomes white; from soft and flexible it becomes hard and brittle as glass. This admixture removes it so far from its original nature that one who does not know that it is a compound material believes it to be one of the number of metals engendered by Nature. Now, so that you may understand well, I tell you that various kinds of this are made, all according to the proportions of the quantities and according to the kind of work. For one kind of bronze is desired by those who make statues; this is not desired by those who make artillery or by those who make bells, mortars, basins, and similar cast objects. Now in order to alloy it into the species of bronze, eight, nine, ten, up to twelve pounds of tin are put with every hundred pounds of copper. Those who want it to make bells put twenty-three, twenty-four, twenty-five, and twenty-six, depending on the tone, on whether they are large or small in form, and on whether they wish to make the tone deep or sharp and clear. A SPRING meeting is to be held at Cleveland this month under the joint auspices of the Iron and Steel Committee and the Ohio Section with the cooperation of the neighboring sections in Pennsyl-vania, Illinois, and the other States of the Great Lakes region. Nearly 14 pounds of manganese is needed for every ton of steel made. Estimates indicate that the total reserves of ore in this country suitable for making ferro would hardly supply domestic requirements for ten years, even if it could all be mined in that time. The grade of ore called for by present practice must come from abroad. The present tariff policy of this country is stated to cost industry $8,000,000 in order to force production of manganese ore to the extent of $600,000. What is the wise thing to do? Should a stock be accumulated? If so, how? Is it feasible to change practice and use low-grade ore or to beneficiate the ores of this grade and meet our requirements? What progress is being made in this direction? ,These and similar questions are raised in the various papers that have been submitted and will be open for dis-cussion.

The quantities and destinations of the metallic ores and concentrates and partially or fully refined metals in international trade result from the interaction of many factors, of which geographic location is only one. How far the processes of concentration and refining are to be carried in the country in which the mining is done and what dictates the destinations to which the more or less completely processed raw materials will move are determined not only by present-day geologic, political, and economic conditions, but also by the patterns set up by these same conditions as they obtained in the past. The first generalization that can be made regarding trade in metal raw materials-one that affects the form in which the material is transported, rather than the patterns followed by that trade-is that concentration is carried out for all low grade ores, nonferrous or ferrous, in the country in which they originate. (Rule 1.) Economic considerations alone almost always require that this be done; only high grade iron, manganese, and chromite ores can be shipped as they are mined.

GRAPHITE is one of the so-called minor nonmetals that have become of major importance during the present conflict. Requirements of the domestic industry for graphite are relatively small and uses have changed so greatly in the past 25 years that different types, with few exceptions, are more nearly interchangeable in use. However, the quality of the graphite required for crucibles is exacting and under present manufacturing practices only a small part of the world production can be utilized economically by this industry. Graphite, for the domestic crucible industry, was supplied almost entirely by imports from Madagascar and Ceylon before the present war. The quantity required has been increased by the war and the greatest demand is for Madagascar flake. The fall of France to Germany in 1941 and the Japanese expansion southward threatened our supply of crucible-grade graphite, therefore the domestic industry was revived to supplement imports and to act as insurance in the event of complete stoppage of imports. Two plants were constructed for the Government, one at Ashland, Alabama, called the Crucible Flake Graphite Co., operated by Haile Mines, Inc., and one near West Chester, Pennsylvania, operated by the Benjamin Franklin Flake Graphite Co. Loans were made by the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to the Alabama Flake Graphite Co. at Ashland, the Ceylon Graphite Co., at Goodwater, Ala., and the Southwestern Graphite Co., at Burnet, Texas. However, by the end of 1943 the import situation had improved and it was no longer necessary to continue Government assistance to mine and stock-pile the high-cost domestic material. Graphite is found in virtually every country of the world. Most occurrences are of no economic importance because of their poor quality, prohibitive mining and milling costs, inaccessibility, and poor location with reference to the industrial centers where graphite is used. The principal commercial deposits are found in Ceylon, Madagascar, Chosen (Korea), United States, U. S. S. R., Canada, Germany, and Mexico. Graphite is a typical international mineral in that it is utilized mainly in countries noted for industrial activities, whereas the two islands, Ceylon and Madagascar, which produce the major part of the world's high-grade graphite, are virtually devoid of any manufacturing establishments requiring its use. H. A. MEGRAW, New York, N.,Y.-One interesting thing that might be brought out in this connection is the cost of making sulphide gas. I had a communication the other day which suggested that, in view of the high cost of oil, sulphur and sodium sulphide, we might make use of a well-known chemical reaction to form this sulphide gas by the use of aluminum sulphide. It is difficult to see any advantage in this, however, since aluminum has been affected just as much as any other commodity by the rise in prices, due, to war conditions. RUDOLF GAHL, Miami, Ariz. (communication td the Secretary*) Mr. Callow refers to my paper, History of Flotation at Inspiration, which was presented at the Arizona meeting of the Institute. These notes of Mr. Callow's contain much valuable information on flotation practice, as is to be expected from an article written by an author of Mr. Callow's experience in this branch of metallurgy. Nevertheless, I cannot help contradicting a number of the statements made in the references to my paper. In passing, I will also say a word about the reference in Mr. Callow's paper to the article by Messrs. Laist and Wiggin entitled "Flotation Concentration at Anaconda, Mont." Mr. Callow calls attention to the fact that evidently Callow flotation machines are not very sensitive, inasmuch as one man per shift handles four 800-ton sections of Callow machines or 3,200 tons per day at the Inspiration plant. While-it has been the experience of the Inspiration company that the four sections of Callow machines in the Inspiration concentrator are easily handled by one American operator per shift, it is only fair to state that each man operating four sections is assisted by two Mexican helpers who constantly clean the bottoms of the machines. The tonnage per section, by the way, whether equipped with Callow,, Inspiration or Minerals Separation machines, is considerably in excess 4 800 tons.. Mr. Callow further says that local opinion at Inspiration is that, two 800-ton sections consisting of two 10-compartment and four 6-compartment Minerals Separation machines (these machines are of the Hebbard type) is the limit that one man can properly attend. I do not hesitate to say that I consider it perfectly feasible to have four such sections operated by one man, perhaps assisted by "one helper. The Minerals Separation machines of this type have undoubtedly an advantage as far as easiness of operation is concerned,

Exploration by AS&R of the Nuestra Senora lead-zinc-silver property, located in Cosala District, Sinaloa, Mexico, has proved sufficient ore to warrant placing the mine on an operating basis. Installation of mine plant, concentrator, and townsite, is expected to commence late in 1951. Opening of a lead-zinc property in Nigeria is also being contemplated by AS&R. Private enterprise is being urged by Secretary of Interior Chapman to start a synthetic fuels industry, it is reported. Based on tests at the Louisiana, Mo., plant which produces quality gasoline at costs up to 144 per gal, he predicts that a commercial plant would pay for itself in 10 years.

AUTOMATIC grinding control for ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones was developed for the concentrator of the Marmoraton Mining Co., a subsidiary company of Bethlehem Steel Corp. The concentrator, located at Marmora, Ont., Canada, treats an ore that analyzes 35 to 40 pct magnetic iron. Magnetite, the recoverable iron mineral, is concentrated by fine grinding and magnetic separation. The mesh of grind obtained in the plant is not determined by the point at which liberation is sufficient to yield a satisfactory grade of concentrate, but by the physical requirements of the downstream pelletizing operation. This is considerably finer than is metallurgically necessary. The concentrator has two identical units, each consisting of a rod mill in open circuit, followed by a ball mill in closed circuit with a cyclone and two rougher magnetic separators. The cyclone was chosen as a classifier because of its high efficiency on heavy gravity, magnetically flocculated material.

Two discrete types of microstructure me seen in cermets formed by the reaction: 4Al (liquid) + 3SiO2 (glass) — 2A12O3(a) + 3Si (solid) Relatively coarse-grained macroscopically isotropic specimens resulted from reaction with aluminum containing appreciable silicon, while macroscopically anisotropic fine-grained specimens were formed by reaction with aluminum low in silicon. Optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction suggest that the anisotropic material contains gross areas in which submicroscopic grains of a A12O3 are oriented along radial lines drawn from the specimen surface. These lines are presumed to originate at defects in an otherwise protecting surface layer. A unique cermet is formed by the reduction of high-silica glass by molten aluminum according to the reaction: 4A1 (liquid) + 3SiO2 (glass) — 2A12O3 (a) + 3Si (solid) The free-energy change accompanying this reaction is -150 kcal at 800°C; the volume change (volume of A12O3 and silicon minus volume of SiO2) is +6 pct. The reaction product, however, contains aluminum metal as well as Al2O3 and silicon because some of the product silicon is dissolved in the aluminum bath and is replaced by aluminum in the structure. The product is a hard gray solid that retains the external dimensions of the original silica article. The system has been studied in the past, the investigations culminating in patents to George1, 2 and Saw-chuk., The former emphasize that this reaction is but one of a relatively broad class of such systems, while the latter demonstrates that a marked improvement in the gross physical properties of the cermet can be obtained by dissolving appreciable quantities of silicon in the aluminum reactant. The system has also been studied by workers at Rolls Royce Ltd.,4-6 who have patented the addition of small quantities of arsenic, antimony, bismuth, or phosphorus to the reactant bath to SO impede the reaction that glass fibers may be metal-coated by immersion in molten aluminum.

Discussion of the paper of F. E. Lucas, presented at the Cleveland meeting, October, 1912, and printed in Bulletin No. 71, November, 1912, pp. 1315 to 1326. F. Louis GRAMMER, Leesburg, Va. (communication to the Secretary *):--Mr. Lucas's paper reminds us of our extravagance in coking, and our tardiness in the adoption of by-product ovens, as compared to Germany. We are, however, so rich in coal-having mined, so far, less than 1 per cent. of our known national resources-that the argument of conservation is not very pressing. It is true that our so-called coking-coal beds are not inexhaustible; but by-product ovens coke coal that bee-hive ovens cannot handle, and so really enlarge our reserves of coking coal. " Conservation of Resources " is a phrase in great vogue. It is overworked and abused at times; being used by those who desire to be the exclusive custodians of resources or the sole purveyors of commodities. It does not carry great weight as regards coal. There are, however, aside from the attractive considerations of profit set forth by Mr. Lucas, several other important reasons why by-product ovens should be introduced more widely. One is that coal-tar pitch is the keynote to the extension of the coal-briquette industry. The more coal-tar pitch is available, the more briquetting will be carried on; and this will utilize much coal which is either waste or a drug in the market. Heretofore, in several instances coking and steel-making plants have been built, primarily, to market bituminous slack.

The Presidio mine of The American Metal Co. of Texas is situated 45 miles south of Marfa, Texas, a town on the Southern Pacific R. R., and lies approximately 20 miles north of the Mexican border. Communication with the railroad is maintained over a state highway. All supplies for mine and mill are hauled in by truck from Marfa and precipitates and concentrates are freighted to the railroad by the same means and shipped to Selby and El Paso, respectively. The mill is at the town of Shafter, 1 mile from the mine and at approximately 350 ft. lower elevation. The ore is conveyed to it by an aerial tramway which requires practically no power on account of the difference in elevation. The mill is a countercurrent decantation cyanide and gravity concentrating plant of 200 tons daily capacity. Coarse and fine crushing are done at the mill. Two neal-by shallow wells in the bed of Cibolo Creek furnish an abundance of water. Power is generated for the mill and town by a Diesel engine plant. Ore Treated The ore is oxidized and siliceous. The greater part contains approximately 16 oz. of silver per ton, but mixed with this are many particles of ore of much higher grade, assaying in many instances 100 oz. or more. In the 16-oz. material there is an almost constant amount of silver which is difficult to recover by cyanidation. The high-grade material contains a much greater proportion of silver which is easily amenable to cyanide treatment. Thus, as the grade of ore becomes higher, the percentage of recovery of silver increases rapidly, under equal milling conditions. The silver minerals contained in the ore are principally argentite and cerargyrite, the former predominating The lead minerals, all of which are argentiferous, are chiefly cerussite and galena, with occasionally a little anglesite. ALTHOUGH flotation of coal is considered relatively new in the United States by coal-preparation engineers, actually it has been practiced to some extent for the past 30 years, It is practiced much more widely in Europe than in the United States. Commercial plants are operating in nearly all major coal-producing countries of the world. A froth flotation plant has been operating since 1930 at the Champion No, 1 preparation plant of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. Unfortunately the term flotation is widely used in the United States by coal-preparation engineers to designate dense medium processes of coal cleaning. As used here, flotation means those processes for cleaning fine sizes of coal in which the coal is collected in a froth or matte at or near the surface of a pulp. The refuse particles remain in the pulp. Two distinct types of flotation are practiced: froth flotation and agglomeration. FORMS OF FLOTATION The theory of the principles of flotation and of the physicochemical foundations surrounding this process has become a complex and scientific field and coal-preparation engineers contemplating use of flotation processes would do well to study the works of Gaudin, 2, 5 Taggart, 3 Zimmerman, 4 Wark, 6 Ralston, 7 Petersen. 8 Bulk Oil Flotation.-In this process the separation of mineral from gangue is accomplished by virtue of the fact that minerals of metallic lustre, as sulphides, or hydrocarbons, as coal and graphite, are wetted preferentially by oil in the presence of water and consequently pass into the interface between oil and water; while gangue or rock is wetted by water and remains in the medium. Beginning in 1860 with Haynes and later between 1897 and 1907, at least 25 patents were granted for bulk oil flotation. Large quantities of oil are required, generally 3 to 25 per cent by weight of feed, and recovery of such oil is a major problem. The Elmore process 3 (1901 and 1902) is an example of a bulk oil process, The Trent process (1902-25) has been used for the cleaning of coal on a commercial scale, According to E. W, Davidson 9 there were five such plants operating in the United States by 1925. They have since been abandoned.

As legislation to minimize pollution in effluent streams becomes stricter, it is important to treat used acid pickling baths before discharge. This is usually achieved by neutralization of the acids and precipitation of the dissolved metals in such a way that neither acids nor metals can be re-used. A process has been designed and tested on a pilot plant scale to recover both acids and metals from a stainless steel pickling bath leaving only Na2SOs in the effluent. In this process, H2SOr is added to the spent pickling liquor and the recovery of the pickling acids HN03 and HF is achieved by solvent extraction, using TBP in kerosene as the organic solvent. The extracted acids are stripped with water, giving an acid concentration high enough for direct use in the pickling bath. Molybdenum is also extracted by TBP and is recovered in a separate step. The other metals, Fe, Cr and Ni, are precipitated from the raffinate as hydroxides, dried and recycled to the metal process. In evaluating this process, comparative experiments with mixer-settler and pulsed column have been performed. The process described is being considered for use by a Swedish company pickling 70,000 tons per annum of stainless steel.

Growing demand for steel and increasing dependence upon foreign ore makes the need for developing the technology for treatment of low-grade iron ores greater than ever before• Representative of these added interests were the studies carried on at the University of Wisconsin• These studies included among others: anionic and cationic flotation, magnetic separation, roasting followed by magnetic separation, electrostatic separation, a hydrogen reduction process,6,7 and caustic digestion• The idea of removing silica by caustic extraction is not new•-1; The principle of concentrating siliceous iron ores by this method is based on the fact that silica is soluble in sodium hydroxide solution while iron oxides are essentially insoluble• For this process to be economically feasible, it is believed that some method of recovering silica from solution as a marketable by-product, with recycling of spent liquor is necessary. Precipitation of silica with carbon dioxide will allow subsequent causticizing of the spent liquor with lime• Caustic thus produced can be recycled for digestion• A flowsheet of the envisioned process is given in [Fig• 1] The purpose of this paper is to describe results obtained from the investigation of carbon dioxide precipitation of silica from sodium silicate solutions, which could be later applied to the caustic extraction process to treat low grade siliceous iron ores, particularly taconites.15 Theoretical Considerations The soluble silicates of sodium include sodium orthosilicate (2Na2O•SiO2), sodium metasilicate (Na20•SiO2), sodium disilicate (Na1O•2SiO2), and more highly siliceous products approaching Na2O•4SiO2• These materials have been described in detail by Vail•16 Stones has reported that the extraction of silica is not significantly affected by the amount of silica in solution until the Si02/Na20 ratio exceeds that of orthosilicate (Ratio = 1/2)• However, as the Si02/Na2O ratio exceeds that of metasilicate (Ratio = 1), silica extraction is significantly impaired• The present experimental work was confined to orthosilicate and metasilicate solutions, as to be successful the envisioned commercial process for the extraction of silica from siliceous iron ores would operate in this region. The mechanism of extraction of silica from aqueous sodium silicate solutions is complex in nature. For the carbon dioxide process-18 of core and mold making in which silica is also precipitated from sodium silicate solutions by gassing with carbon dioxide, the reaction of aqueous silicates with gaseous carbon dioxide has been represented by the equations: [ ] However, these equations are very much oversimplified• It has been shown that the reaction between aqueous sodium silicates and carbon dioxide gas is ionic in nature 18 Considering this fact and the mechanism for digestion of silica in aqueous sodium hydroxide, the overall conversion of aqueous sodium silicates to solid silica may be represented in ionic form by the following equations: [ ] Silicon in the silicate ion is shown here with a coordination number of 6• This may be in doubt, but it is known that ion (SiF°)-2 exists; it seems logical that the Si (OH) e 2 ion should be equally capable of existence•

The development of a process for the treatment of telluride concentrates at Emperor Gold Mining Co. Vatukoula, is discussed. The concentrate is produced by flotation in cyanide solution immediately after milling. Two stages of cleaning are employed and a high-grade concentrate is produced usually containing more than 50% of the precious metal. The process developed in the first instance involved batch roasting followed by batch leaching in strong cyanide solution, recovering gold and silver only. The procedure currently employed is chemical oxidation of the tellurides using hypochlorite as the oxidant in a basic solution of a caustic soda and sodium carbonate. After oxidation the gold and silver are recovered by cyanidation. The residue is then leached with sodium sulfide and elemental tellurium precipitated with sodium sulfite.

Tapadaa is one of several centers of porphyry copper mineralization in northern Sulawesi. Host rocks are mainly varieties of quartz diorite porphyry. Structural control of mineralization is indicated by elongation of the sulfide system (5 x 1 km) parallel to prominent NW-trending structures, but in detail mineralization is strongly influenced by relative age and lithology. Hydrothermal alteration is characterized by widespread occurrence of advanced argillic assemblages and the presence of sodic rather than potassic alkali feldspar. Propylitic alteration surrounds the mineralized area. Phyllic and advanced argillic alteration occur in structurally controlled zones and in limited pervasive areas. Hypogene copper mineralization develops in rocks with sericite-albite alteration and comprises low total sulfide chalcopyrite-bornite or chalcopyrite-pyrite.
