INTRODUCTION The meaning of cash flow has already been defined as after-tax earnings available for use by the corporation or business. It is therefore apparent that a significant part of mineral economic evaluation is concerned with correct and accurate computation of taxable income under existing tax laws, and the proper treatment of tax allowances and deductions. The various methods of depreciation, depletion, and amortization are all means whereby the investor can earn back or recover, before taxes are imposed, the investments made for purposes of doing business or for the production of income. Each of these three types of tax deduction are applied to different investment items such as property, equipment, buildings, research, etc. The cost of buildings, equipment, machinery, and transportation equipment are representative of capitalized business costs that must be recovered by depreciation over the life of the asset. The property investment costs of acquiring natural resources such as minerals, oil and gas, and standing timber are examples of investment costs that may be recovered by depletion. Several other capitalized business costs, such as research expenses and trademark expenses, may be recovered by amortization. The term "capitalized" means that the in- vestment cost is not deducted as an operating expense in the year that it is incurred, but is spread out over a period of years through depreciation, depletion, or amortization deductions according to lawful schedules. Of course, any capitalized cost can only be deducted once. The other costs of doing business which are not capitalized, such as labor and operating costs, are said to be "expensed," i.e., they are written off for tax purposes in the year they occur. DEPRECIATION Depreciation, according to US tax law, is a deduction from taxable income permitted as a "reasonable allowance for the exhaustion, wear and tear of property out of its use or employment in a business." The original cost of the property is the usual basis for determining depreciation. Since depreciation write-off is applied over the useful life of the asset, the first step is to determine the estimated useful life or its allowable depreciable life. These two lives may or may not be the same. No average life is applicable to all types of depreciable assets under different conditions or in different types of business. It is the taxpayer's responsibility to determine the useful life of the asset according to his own operating conditions and experience, within the guidelines set by the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The Class Life Depreciation Range (ADR) System permits the taxpayer to choose from a range of depreciable lives at 20% below or above the present guideline life. The second step required in calculating depreciation is to determine an estimated salvage value for the asset. The salvage value is an estimate, made at the time of acquisition, of the amount of money which can be realized by the sale of the asset at the end of its useful life. The four depreciation methods most widely used in the US are: (1) the straight-line method, (2) the declining balance method (double declining balance), (3) sum of the years - digits method, and (4) units of production method. Straight-Line Depreciation Method The straight-line depreciation method is the simplest for calculating depreciation. The depreciation for each year is determined by subtracting the estimated salvage value from the first cost of the asset and dividing the result by the years of life. The method gives equal annual deduction over the depreciable life. Salvage value equal to or less than 10% of the first cost may be ignored. THE turn of the century was marked by the appearance of a series of greatly important pieces of research that became the foundations of modern physical metallurgy. It is, of course, some- what misleading to ascribe the growth of a science, or a branch of engineering, to the work of a few men, as it is to write history generally in terms of great men, for this approach neglects back- ground development, and tends to overemphasize the importance of immediately subsequent events; the correlative and steady growth of the basic sciences added to the resources of the new science of metals--developments in basic science .years later were to appear in their application to metal systems. Yet it is useful to emphasize the importance of these relatively few pieces of research. THE PHASE RULE The work of Willard Gibbs on heterogeneous equilibria, which included the derivation of the phase rule, was published obscurely in the journal of the Connecticut Academy.30 Unearthed by the German physical chemists (evidently by van der Waals, to use Ostwald's phrase, "aus dem staubigen Fundort"), its importance to the study of alloys was pointed out by Jüptner31 and by Le Chatelier; its application to polycomponent systems, and to metal systems in particular, was developed by Rijn van Alkemade (1893), by Le Chatelier;8a and especially by Roozeboom (1899-1900). The work of Raoult on the depression of the freezing point by solutes led to the study of the phenomenon in amalgams and shortly to metal systems. Work was done, by Roberts-Austen and others, on the initial freezing temperatures of binary alloys-the liquidi, data applicable to Raoult's work. Van't Hoff in 1890 had pointed out

The following example of the practical application of engineering geology is of interest in that it demonstrates the advantage of keeping accurate records of all wells, whether drilled by onn's self or by others, together with the advantage gained by gathering such data during the process of development. The fault described was found in the autumn of 1915, during the hurried development caused by the discovery of the famous Gusher Bend pool in Red River Parish, Louisiana. The writer was at the time employed by one of the operating companies as geologist, and the example is a portion of the routine work. Location The oil fields of northern Louisiana and east Texas are located in Caddo, Bossier, De Soto and Red River Parishes, Louisiana, and Marion County, Texas. A very narrow strip of the eastern portion of the latter is productive. The producing oil pools are known as the Caddo Field, in the northern part, and the De Soto-Red River Field, in the southern. The two fields are 60 miles apart. There are several gas fields between them, but no important supply of oil has been found, though there are several producing wells in the Anona chalk, locally called the Chalk Rock, in the Elm Grove gas field in Township 16 North, Range 11 West (see Plate 1). The authors presented an article2† last year on colloidal properties of clay suspensions in which they attempted to sustain the position that the behavior of clay suspensions is due primarily to the mechanical interference of the platy particles, the nature and extent of the interference being profoundly influenced by the character of the surfaces of the particles, which in turn is determined primarily by the nature and amount of adsorbed foreign materials held on the surface of the particles by forces which are predominantly chemical in type. The following discussion is a continuation of that article to extend these same interpretative points of view to the behavior of clay gels. Insight into the mechanism of gelation is certainly of outstanding importance in the handling of drilling muds. In the former article it was suggested that the thin, flat plates that constitute the ultimate clay particles may build up aggregates by the overlapping of the ultimate plates face to face much longer and perhaps also much wider than the ultimate plates themselves, but not appreciably thicker. Exhaustive microscopic examinations of characteristic clays show no tendency for the larger particles, clearly visible under the microscope, to orient themselves in this way. It is true that the gelation of the clays is due primarily to the smallest particles, unresolvable other than by the ultramicroscope, so that the possibility of the deve1opment by them of an overlapping structure is not excluded. Furthermore, as one approaches the limit of resolving power of the microscope, the difficulty of observing accurately the shapes and relative positions of particles incresses excessively. However, in the absence of any observable tendency toward overlapping orientation of the large, visible particles, one hesitates to ascribe such a tendency to the smaller particles beyond the range of visibility. Should it develop that one must exclude the assumption of overlapping orientation, the explanations offered in the previous article are changed in only one respect; namely, one would now have to assume that the ultimate particles themselves have length, and probably also width, very large in comparison with their thickness.

Techniques previously published to predict the production performance of a water flood when the mobility ratio is not unity have been primarily restricted to a five-spot well pattern. When other types of well patterns are considered, the prediction of performance has required either a model study or a complex numerical solution of a multiple-fluid system with a high-speed digital computer. Simple methods are developed in this report for predicting the areal sweep efficiency and injectivity history of a water flood for arbitrary well patterns and mobility ratios. The effect of an initial gas saturation can be incorporated into this method of prediction. With the layer superposition concepts published by Prats, et al.,1 these methods can be used to predict the production performance of a water flood in a reservoir having a wide range in permeability. A reasonably good agreement is shown by comparisons of the results calculated by this method with those obtained either by model studies or by complex numerical solution of multiple-fluid systems. Therefore, it has been concluded that a reasonably accurate method has been developed for predicting the production performance of a water flood employing an arbitrary type of well pattern for any given mobility ratio. A medium-speed digital computer can be used in applying this method. INTRODUCTION Production performance of multi-fluid five-spot water floods can be predicted by the techniques published by Prats, et al.1 This technique takes into account the effects of initial gas saturation, mobility ratio and vertical variations in horizontal permeability. A basic assumption in applying this technique is that unit displacement efficiency does not vary with time after the passage of the flood front. Prats, et al. demonstrated that this assumption is valid for normal waterflood applications with small mobility ratios. To extend Prats' technique to other types of well patterns has required either an experimental model study or a numerical solution of a multiple-fluid system to describe the performance of an individual homogeneous layer. Sheldon and Dougherty2 presented an exact numerical solution employing any arbitrary well pattern. This technique is complex to apply, requiring (1) numerical solution of the single-fluid system, (2) conformal mapping of the streamlines and iso-potential lines to form a new grid network, and (3) a numerical solution of the multi-fluid system on the new grid network. A method was developed in this paper to approximate areal sweep efficiency and injectivity as functions of time for an individual homogeneous layer for arbitrary well patterns and mobility ratios. Analytic expressions were derived to directly apply this method to five-spot and direct line drive well patterns. For other types of well patterns, this method is similar to the approach of Higgids and Leighton,6 in that it utilizes the stream tubes and iso-potential lines obtained by the solution of differential equations when the mobility ratio is unity. However, this method is easier to apply than the Higgins-Leighton method since it does not require knowledge of the variation between oil and water relative permeabilities and saturation. Using the relationship between areal sweep efficiency, injectivity and the volume of water injected into an individual homogeneous layer as obtained by the method presented in this paper, and Prats' technique for the superposition of individual layers, one can predict the production performance of any water flood. ASSUMPTIONS GENERAL Basic assumptions made in this report are that fluids are incompressible and the layers are horizontal, homogeneous and uniformly thick. It is assumed that as water is injected into the layer, three distinct regions are formed —a water bank, an oil bank, and an unflooded region. Each region is assumed to displace other regions in a pis-tonlike manner, with only one fluid flowing in each region, so that there is no change in unit displacement efficiency with time after the flood front has passed in the reservoir. Therefore, the residual oil saturation in the water bank and the oil saturations in the unflooded region are constant throughout the layer. THE assay of all metal ores is made by means of fusion and they are brought to their fineness in the same way as if they were a large quantity. However, I have told you of lead, tin, copper, and iron in their own places, that they are smelted in order to obtain a good assay so that one may know from its weight whether the quantity justifies the expense. This is their assay, for it does not matter whether it be done with great exactness. But the eye is turned with much more care to the assaying of silver and gold, since they are things of value, and one tries to have a more exact knowledge of them. Thus, when you have found the mountain and the vein of ore in it, and have also uncovered it or extracted it from the mine, it is necessary to make an assay of it, for though it is often apparent to the experts what kind of metal it contains, nevertheless they do not know for sure what virtues or evilness it may have unless the light of the assay itself shows them. Therefore it is necessary to extract a quantity in some way that is as free from rock and as good as possible. To a part of this, without any addition, a smelting fire must be applied in order to see whether it can be smelted easily. If it does not smelt by itself, you must consider and try to understand what causes this, for many times it comes from the rock which accompanies it and which contains much dryness and earthiness. I do not believe that one can know this with other judgment than by experiment with powerful and strong fires. Therefore, if the efforts of ordinary methods do not succeed, it is necessary to try to soften them by means of the company of fusible things-now with marble, now with ground glass, now with lead, galena,* or litharge from lead, or with iron scale, or else with the slag of other ores. With small operations even borax, saltpeter, or ochre is used and similar things, as I shall tell you in detail in the discussion of the preparation of ores for smelting. THIS remarkable gold and silver bearing district is situated on the middle fork of Boise River, in Alturas County, Idaho Territory, about eighteen miles north of Rocky Bar, and sixty-five to seventy miles, as the crow flies, east of Boise City, the capital of the Territory. This district lies in the very heart of one of the most wild and mountainous regions of Idaho. For many miles in every direction nothing can be seen but bold granite mountains, with deep narrow gorges cutting into their sides in every direction, rendering them almost inaccessible except to the hardy mountaineer and adventurous prospector. The mountain sides are covered, in most part, by dense forests of pine, fir, and spruce timber. In every canon there are clear streams of pure running water that empty into the principal forks of Boise River. The only line of approach to this mountainous region at present is from the southwest, by way of Rocky Bar, the county seat of Alturas County, to which place there is a good wagon-road. From thence to Atlanta City, eighteen miles, the road, or pack-trail, passes over the high, steep range that separates the south and middle forks of Boise River. During severe winters this line of approach is closed up by deep snows for months at a time, thus leaving the district isolated, in the bosom of the grand old mountains. The geological formation is granite, of a coarse, friable texture, and in many places is traversed by numerous dikes of syenite, and three or four varieties of porphyry, which cut through the granite in easterly and westerly directions. The metal-bearing veins also have an easterly and westerly trend, but are occasionally intersected by the dikes. The largest number of the gold and silver lodes are confined to a

WITHIN the last twenty-five or thirty years the actual operations of the great mining industry have passed almost wholly under the charge of men trained in the technical colleges. It follows that the industry is profoundly influenced for good or ill by the character of the training which the college graduate receives, and the relations existing between the industry and the colleges. This fact seems to be generally recognized, as evidenced, for example, by the existence of a Committee on Technical Education created some two or three years ago by the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America. In 1921 this committee rendered a very able and. extremely well poised reports of technical education as applied to the prospective mining engineer. It deserves the attention of every one interested in the effectiveness of engineering training. That the importance of the relation between the mining industry and the engineering colleges is recog-nized is evidenced also by the mass of criticism, usually adverse, which is proffered to and often hurled at the colleges by those in the industry. The man inn the field sometimes goes so far as to say that engineering educa-tion is hopelessly inefficient and its product worthless, while the college worker sometimes complains that the demands of the industrialist are too numerous and conflicting to be met, and adds that they would' best be ignored. Between these extremes, there seems to be a general consensus of opinion that the training of the would-be engineer can be, and. ought to be, made much better than it now is.

The progress of metallurgical practice and the demands made by the engineering industry on our foundries and mills have made the crystalline structure of metals a subject of far more than academic interest. Metals and alloys are made up of crystals. Even if we accept the view, so ably maintained by some metallurgists, that the crystals are separated from one another by an amorphous layer, it remains true that all but a very minute fraction of any metallic mass is crystalline. The conditions which affect the growth of crystals are therefore of importance in metallurgy. It is not only castings whose properties depend on the arrangement of their crystals, for the more we learn of the behavior of forged, rolled and drawn metals, the more certain it becomes that it is profoundly influenced by the size and arrangement of the crystals in the original ingot, determining a structure which may persist in a modified form through a long series of mechanical operations and annealings. This is mainly due to the concentration of much of the impurities in the last portions of the liquid to freeze, so that the boundaries between single crystals or groups of crystals are marked out by a zone of segregated material, differing in properties from the mass, and offering a barrier to diffusion and equalization of composition throughout the whole. The importance of this fact has been fully recognized by steel manufacturers, who have to deal with ingots which are sometimes very large, and are cast at a high temperature, containing impurities which have a marked effect on the properties even when present in very small quantity. For this reason the Iron and Steel Institute has set up a committee to examine the whole question of the heterogeneity of steel ingots,(1)† and a report has been issued, containing an account of the structure of 16 ingots, ranging in weight from 15 cwt. to 172 tons, each of which was sectioned and examined by chemical analysis and by etching. A valuable body of data concerning segregation has thus been collected. Grindability or resistance to fine comminution is the fundamental issue involved in the application and sizing of grinding mills. Over the years, many theories for determining the amount of energy required for size reduction to a specified fineness have been proposed. The first published theory, introduced by P. R. von Rittinger in 1867, stated that the energy required for crushing or grinding is proportional to the increase in surface area produced. The surface area of a ton of particles of diameter (d) is proportional to (1/d), therefore the work input per ton for particles of diameter (d) would be proportional to (1/d). The second significant theory is that of F. Kick published in 1885. Kick said that the work required is proportional to the reduction in volume of the particles concerned. If (f) is the diameter of the feed particles and (p) is the diameter of the product particles, the work input relationship would be: [W =Ioq(f/p) 9] The "Third Theory" of F.C. Bond, introduced in 1951, states that the work required is proportional to the length of the new crack tips produced in particle breakage during crushing or grinding and equals work represented by the product minus that represented by the feed. Mining geophysics in 1969 marked a year of growth and consolidation in the application of ground and airborne geophysical methods and techniques with a 20% rise in expenditures for world-wide exploration. Growth was determined by questionnaire survey of industry, geophysical contractors, universities and government agencies conducted by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. Relative position of metlhods is shown in the accompanying table on page 87. Methods and Techniques Electromagnetic airborne and ground methods showed the largest gains in the utilization of VLF-EM instrumentation. The VLF-EM instrument is a directional radio receiver which is tuned to distant radio transmitters in the 15 to 25 kilohertz band range. It measures vertical real and imaginary components of the magnetic field vector, and is used in geological mapping and surveying for various types of conductors in the ground. BRÜCKNER's revolving cylinders for roasting ores, etc., are now used at a number of the mills in Colorado and New Mexico, for the purpose of roasting and chloridizing silver ores, with highly satisfactory results, even from those cylinders of small size, erected before the many improvements of recent date. As examples of the larger improved cylinders, reference can be made to those erected at the Tennessee Reduction Works, Silver City, Grant County, New Mexico, and those which were built, in 1871, at the celebrated Caribou Silver Mill and Mines, Colorado, a mining enterprise which has proved so satisfactory as to have been lately sold to a Holland company for an enormous amount. These cylinders, as now constructed by Messrs. Lane & Bodley, of Cincinnati,, Ohio, are shown in Plate III, in which Fig. 1 is an elevation in perspective, Fig. 2 a longitudinal, and Fig. 3 a trans¬verse section. Fig. 4 is a sketch of a mill, with Brückner's cylinder. The exterior of the cylinder is a shell of boiler iron, 12 feet long by 5 feet 6 inches in diameter. The ends are partially closed with similar material, leaving in the centre a circular opening about 2 feet in diameter, bounded by a flange projecting several inches.. Upon one side is placed an opening closed by a hinged door. Upon the outside of the cylinder are bolted three bands, as shown in Fig. 1, in which the section of the first is square, and that of the third semi¬circular; the second, or middle band, is a strong spur gear. Passing through the cylinder are six pipes parallel to one another, in a plane at an angle of 15° to the axis of the cylinder; these pipes also lie in this plane at an angle of from 30° to 35° to the longitudinal, axis of the plane, as shown in Fig. 2, where the internal arrangement of the cylinder is seen, a perforated diaphragm being formed through part of the cylinder by means of perforated plates placed between

Samples of four reservoir sands having different degrees of water sensitivity were subjected to several laboratory tests to determine differences in capillary behavior attributable to clay-mineral effects. The degree of water sensitivity was estimated by the difference between gas and water permeability. Unsaturated pore volumes determined with mercury injection were comparable to irreducible water saturations determined with the semipermeable bar-rier method only for the non-sensitive sands that contained small amounts of non-swelling clay minerals. Irreducible saturations were independent of salinity of the water, which suggests that most residual water is adsorbed 0.7 a film over solid surfaces and that internal retention by clay minerals is relatively insignificant. The water-sensitive sands imbibed water to higher saturations than did non-sensitive sands, and this result is believed to be a combination of the effects of clay minerals and preferential wettability; however, the relative importance of each of these effects is riot determinable. Thus it is concluded that the semipermeable barrier method is the best of the laborafory methods used for estimating formntion water .saturations in the sands studied. INTRODUCTION This investigation is a continuation of studies of the role of clay minerals in petroleum production in the Rocky Mountain area. Previous work has shown large differences in gas and water permeability in numerous reservoir sands; these water-sensitivity effects observed in the laboratory have been correlated with well behavior in the field, and the degree of water sensitivity imparted to reservoirs by the various clay minerals has been determined.'.' The effect of interstitial clay minerals on formation water3 saturations is not so well known. It has been reported that formation water saturations probably are higher in clayey than clean sands,' but this effect has not been evaluated in the laboratory, and the relative effect of the various types of clay minerals on formation water saturation has not been determined. The clay-mineral groups of most importance to this study and to petroleum production in general are kaolinite, illite, and montmorillonite. The minute layers of montmorillonite are loosely bound to one another so that water enters between them, causing great expansion of the particles. Kaolinite and illite do not exhibit interlayer hydration, but they do immobilize considerable amounts of water owing to their large surface areas, which are of the order of 15 to 97 m2/gm of clay.5 The four Wyoming sands used in this study were selected to represent a wide range of water sensitivities. These sands, with the number of wells and fields from which the samples were obtained, are: Second Frontier, five wells in two fields; Newcastle, six wells in one field; Tensleep, two wells in two fields; and Lower Muddy, five wells in one field. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS AND PROCEDURES Water-displacement data were obtained by the semipermeable barrier method," using both fresh water and brines having either 16,500 ppm sodium chloride or calcium chloride. A displacement pressure of 35 psi was found to be sufficient to obtain the practical irreducible water or brine saturation (IWS, IBS) in most samples. Mercury-injection data were ob-tained with equipment and pro-cedures similar to those described by Purcell.7 Exceedingly high pressures are required to attain complete mercury saturation by this method; however, since saturations in most samples change very little with large pressure increases above 1,000 psia, the maximum pressure used was 1,400 psia. To facilitate comparison of mercury-injection and water-displacement results, it is convenient to express mercury-injection data in terms of unsaturated pore volume. The abbreviation, (100 - SHg)min, is used to denote the pore volume unsaturated by mercury at 1,400 psia injection pressure. The PGT uranium assay probe is a borehole tool developed by Princeton Gamma-Tech over the last several years. It has the ability to do an in-situ assay of uranium in the presence of any amount of disequilibrium. It has some advantages over coring including cost, speed of analysis, and accuracy. In this paper we would like to give a brief description of the measurement and then show some sample logs from South Texas. Uranium exploration and development is carried out primarily by gamma logging since uranium daughters are prolific emitters of gamma rays. The conventional gross gamma tool for uranium logging is limited in value because of the inability of this tool to distinguish uranium from its daughters and other naturally occurring radioisotopes, such as potassium and thorium. This problem becomes severe in cases of disequilibrium. Disequilibrium, in a geological context, is defined as the condition when the gamma radiations from the daughter products are being emitted in a location different from that of the parent uranium. In the decay chain of uranium almost all the gamma radiation emitted in the entire chain comes from the daughter product, bismuth-214. Bismuth-214 is separated from uranium by several long-lived isotopes that are chemically active and have different physical properties, often resulting in shifts in the location of bismuth- 214 relative to the parent uranium. In the United States orebodies exhibiting disequilibrium are a common occurrence and the use of a gross gamma log to delineate uranium orebodies can lead to errors. At present the solution to the disequilibrium problem is extensive coring followed by chemical analyses of the cores. There are several drawbacks in using this technique. First is the high cost of coring, the second is the fact that no results are available for days, or typically, weeks after the drilling is done. Thus for development work, coring and drilling must be done on a grid basis and many additional holes are cored to ensure that the entire orebody is mapped. Another disadvantage to cores is the fact that a small volume is sampled, the volume of the core itself. This leads to problems in the mapping out of the orebody when the ore de- posit is not very homogeneous. The PGT probe described in this paper is a new solution to the disequilibrium problem. Basically, the probe measures radiations that come almost directly from uranium itself. The first daughter of uranium, which is protactinium-234 (Pa-234), is only separated from uranium by a 24-day half-life and no disequilibrium problems build up in such a short time. The PGT probe measures the intensity of a one MeV gamma line emitted by Pa-234 and, using this information, calculates the concentration of uranium. The PGT probe is 24" in diameter and 12 feet long. The probe contains a microprocessor which passes the information to a larger minicomputer in the truck. All data is analyzed on site, and the results from a high speed printer are presented to the geologist. Data is also available on 9- track IBM compatible tape for further processing. The PGT probe output is linear with uranium concentration. The only correction factor is for borehole size, and that only becomes important in boreholes bigger than seven inches in diameter. Dead time is compensated in the probe itself and no problems have been encountered in ore zones up to several percent UjO8. In addition to the uranium assay, a conventional gross gamma log is plotted alongside. Grade thicknesses for zones above cutoff are calculated as well as disequilibrium factors. COMPARISONS During its commercial operation PGT logged a series of 18 holes that had been cored and assayed. All of the holes in this series were logged in normal operation by regular field operators. The time to log each hole was generally under an hour, and in typical operation a PGT logging truck will do between 7 and 8 holes a day. The results of the comparison of the PGT and the core assays are presented in a series of figures showing plots of the PGT assay, core analysis and gross gamma measurements. The first three figures show individual holes with the gross gamma plotted along with the core and the PGT assays. All three logs were from holes on the reduced side of a rollfront deposit in South Texas. In Figure 1 we see the two wings of the roll- front at 143 ft and 150 ft separated by a barren zone. The wings are well defined both by the PGT assay and the core. There is approximately a one foot shift which can be attributed to drilling errors. THE mining methods adopted in Japanese mines are less known to the mining world than those of other countries, owing to the geographical remoteness, but they present many features of interest to mining engineers. The Ashio copper mine is at the village of Ashio, in Tochigiken, about 109 mi. (175 km.) from Tokyo by the Imperial Government railroad. The area of the concession owned by the Furukawa Mining Co. is 5000 acres (5023 ha.). The mine was formerly divided into three, viz.. Honzan, Kotaki, and Tsudo, which are distant 3 mi. (4.8 km.) from each other as shown in Fig. 1. However, in 1914, when the writer was general manager, the three mining plants were amalgamated into one with the result of simplifying the working projects and increasing the operat-ing efficiency. The mine was visited-by the Institute party in November, 1911, when Mr. K. Inouye was the general manager. Shortly afterward, the writer was appointed manager, and, in 1915, he was succeeded by Dr. K. Asano. At the end of 1917, Mr. K. Kibe became general manager and, after two years, was succeeded by the present manager, Mr. I. Sugimoto-. For some time Dr. J. Kojima was acting general manager. It is needless to say that the gentlemen mentioned are all members of the Institute, as is also Baron T. Furukawa, president of the company. Since the discovery of the enormous masses, called "kajika" or "bullhead" deposits; which the writer has described elsewhere,' the mining methods have been varied to meet the different conditions presented by these deposits.

DEEP drilling has led to the development of numerous pools which yield products consisting predominantly of natural gas accompanied by high-gravity water-white or slightly straw-colored liquid. Yields of this "condensate" or "distillate," as it is commonly called, vary from traces to over a hundred barrels per million cubic feet of gas. The fact that this liquid exists in the reservoir as an integral part of the gas phase and is formed by condensation attending simultaneous reduction of pressure and temperature after its entry into the well was apparently first recognized about 1932.1 The nature of the physical phenomena involved in this condensation was clarified for the petroleum industry in 1933 by a report by Sage, Schaafsma, and Lacey2 of the results of an experimental investigation of the behavior of mixtures of methane and propane. Search of the literature has revealed that the condensation of liquid from gaseous mixtures by isothermal pressure reduction is not a new discovery. Kuenen was led by theoretical considerations to expect such a phenomenon, and in 1892 reported3 the results of experimental verification of his deductions. This was followed by a considerable amount of work on the phase relations of mixtures by Kuenen4,5,6 and by others,7,8 mostly in European universities. Since 1930 investigators in this country have reported experimental data on the properties and behavior of a number of hydrocarbon systems.9-17 It is now generally known that in the presence of natural gas the solubility in the gas phase of the heavier and normally liquid hydrocarbons increases rapidly with increasing pressure above 500 to 1000 lb. per sq. in. Thus, at pressures of 2500 lb. per sq. in. or higher a gas may contain appreciable quantities of hydrocarbons with normal boiling points as high as 600°F., which in turn may be condensed from the gas phase by the reduction of their solubility therein attending pressure reduction. The combined effects of pressure and temperature on condensation and vaporization of mixtures are most readily visualized by the study of phase diagrams. Since the construction, application, and interpretation of such diagrams have been described fully in readily available literature, 18-20 this paper will not review the theoretical aspects of this subject. While the behavior of gas-distillate systems is now clearly understood, at least in a qualitative way, most of the published work deals with the results of laboratory studies of binary systems or of synthetic mixtures of hydrocarbons, and although several systematic investigations of the effects of separator pressure and temperature on the yields of liquid product from gas-distillate wells have been made21.22 it appears that in all cases the limitations have precluded the construction of even approximately complete phase diagrams for naturally occurring systems. With this issue of the Bulletin, the Institute puts into operation a plan which it has long had under consideration for enlarging its field of usefulness to its members. We refer to the Index to periodical literature bearing on mining, metallurgy, and related subjects, which will be found in the advertising section at the end of the Bulletin. The Index is printed on alternate pages so that anyone who desires to compile a card index can readily clip the items and paste them onto cards. By its affiliation with the Engineering Societies Library, the Institute possesses unexcelled facilities for the preparation of this Index, since practically every important engineering or technical paper published anywhere in the world is regularly received by the library. The items for publication in the Index are first selected by the library staff, but their final approval and their order of arrangement remains in the hands of the editor. A word should be said in explanation of the system of classification that has been adopted. It will be noted that the classification is extremely broad, no attempt having been made to gather the references into closely specialized groups. Our reason for breaking away from the modern tendency toward minute specialization is based upon the fact that the fundamental principles underlying all engineering are not by any means so diversified as has commonly been supposed. For example, it is not at, all unlikely that an engineer engaged in large-scale ore mining in the Southwest can profit by observing the methods employed by his colleagues in the Pennsylvania coal mines. It is notorious also how extensively the brotherhood of chemical engineers has profited by the. earlier experiences of the ore-dressing and metallurgical engineers. If the Index were minutely sub-divided, it would always be possible that the coal-mining engineer, for example, might fail to observe a most important paper because it happened to be listed tinder the head of iron mining. For this reason, mining practice in general is consolidated under one head. The same line of reasoning applies to other divisions as well. In order to make the Index of practical value to all members of the Institute, wherever they may be situated, the library will undertake to supply, for a nominal charge, an abstract, a translation, a typewritten copy, a photostat copy, or the original of any article in the Index. Requests for service of this character should be addressed directly to the Engineering Societies Library, 29 West 39th St., New York. Members are urged to cooperate toward the success of this new departure by sending us suggestions. Although every effort has been made to anticipate the wishes of the members, it is almost impossible to foretell what services may be most useful to our 7000 constituents. Furthermore, it is known that some men prefer one method of classification while others would find another method more convenient.
