The Fifth Class, that of the OXIDES, is subdivided into three sections, according to the positive element present. The oxides of the non-metal silicon are placed by themselves, but it will be noted that the compounds of the related element titanium are included with those of the metals proper. This last is made necessary by the fact that in one of its forms TiOz is isomorphous with MnOp and PbOz. A series of oxygen compounds which are properly to be viewed as salts, e.g., the species of the Spinel Group and a few others, are for convenience also included in this class.

BENEFICIATION of the manganese oxide ores at Three Kids Mine near Henderson, Nev., has evolved over a period of years. Commercial application of the process is on a secure basis, and an effective working hypothesis has been formulated to help solve the problems encountered in flotation. An outstanding difference between the Manganese Inc. operation and other flotation processes is the necessity for high recovery of slime mineral values. Part of the manganese minerals in the Three Kids ore deposit occurs as primary slime or as minerals that are easily slimed by grinding. High recovery of this slime portion is essential to an economic over- all manganese recovery. The aim of much of the research at Manganese Inc. was to recover these slimed and finely ground minerals by flotation.

The subject assigned is so broad that thorough discussion is well-nigh impossible within the space allotted, and further, few specific data are available upon which to predicate conclusions concerning the efficiency of present methods of distributing anthracite. This paper treats briefly the various agencies through which both primary and secondary distribution are effected, the methods of transportation and the general interrelation of production, demand, inventories and price. Avenues of Distribution Three distinct types of primary distribution are common in the marketing of anthracite. First, though not most important, is the sale by the producer, or operator, direct to the consumer. These sales, other than to employees and the local trade, are generally confined to steam sizes for industrial uses, and are consigned to the sidings or docks of the consumer. Sales of this type often are so closely priced to compete with oil and bituminous that the addition of even a small dealer's margin is sufficient to increase the cost to the point where the business might be lost. Second, the operator sells to a wholesaler or broker for subsequent resale, either to a retail dealer for clearance through his yard or direct to large consumers. Usually this method of distribution is employed by the smaller operators, who do not find it economically feasible to maintain extensive sales organizations. In most instances, the wholesaler retains some 5 per cent for his services, paid, of course, by the producing company whose anthracite he handles. He may, and frequently does, handle the output of several different companies, suited to the varying needs of the different communities he serves. His business includes all sizes of anthracite. The third, and by far the most general method, consists in selling to retail dealers, shipments being made direct from the breakers to the yards of the dealers. VARIOUS investigations have been carried out to determine the effects of cold-rolling on the common physical properties as represented by the yield strength, tensile strength, percentage of elongation and ordinary reduction of area. Very little information is available in the literature with reference to the effects of cold-rolling on the true stress-strain properties. Since the ordinary physical properties base both the stresses and the strains on the original dimensions of the test piece, which are greatly changed during the test, they are essentially empirical values and do not represent physically either true stresses or true strains. Consequently, they do not give an accurate picture of the effects of different conditions, both mechanical and metallurgical, on the strength and ductility of the material. It is not, however, the purpose of this paper to review the various advantages accruing from the use of true stress and true strain values, since these have been shown elsewhere,1-12 but to utilize them in representing the various effects considered. The true stress S and true strain (e = q') values mentioned above for the tension test are defined by1 [ ] where P, A, Ao are the axial load, the instantaneous area and the original area of cross section, respectively. From simultaneous readings of the axial load and the dimension or dimensions determining the instantaneous area of cross section, the true stress-strain curve is constructed by using the relations given in Eq. I. It is then the object of this paper to discuss the general effects of cold-rolling on the true stress and strain values for a low-carbon steel together with the effects of age-hardening and directionality on these properties. PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATIONS The material considered throughout the paper is a low-carbon steel of the following chemical analysis: C, 019 per cent; S, 0. 118; P, 0.092; Mn, 0.85; Si, 0.01. The stock was received in bars, 7 by 3/4 in., and was first annealed for one hour at 1650°F. followed by a furnace cool. Photomicrographs of this material showed considerable directionality even in the annealed condition. In view of the possible effects of the nonhomogeneity and directionality in this material, it was considered important to investigate their influence on the true stress-strain diagrams. In addition, the effect of strain-aging in this steel was also made the subject of a preliminary study. In attempting to find a rapid and economical means for solving many of the subsurface problems that confront the highway engineer, the author for the past two years has utilized a Megger Ground Tester on resistivity surveys in conjunction with highway construction. Electrical surveys in connection with highway work are largely shallow depth surveys, thus differing from most other types of resistivity work. Consequently, the readings are affected by a great many qualifying factors such as the density and moisture content of the media under observation and the amount of weathering and leaching. In most cases the surface layer is decidedly heterogeneous in character, and, because of the great number of side hill cuts, the second layer, which in most cases is rock overlain by some sort of surface soil, silt, or debris, seldom lies in a horizontal position. Shallow strata, lacking homogeneity and not lying in a horizontal position, do not lend themselves readily to accurate theoretical interpretations, therefore the author has used empirical rules to a large extent in interpreting depth soundings. The following empirical rules of interpretation are surprisingly adequate for highway work, since much of the work is in the nature of reconnaissance surveying and the results are construed to be approximations. The writer is careful not to risk interpretation on some special feature of the curve, since such features are usually due to random errors or lack of homogeneity among the subsurface strata. Effect of Surface Medium A resistivity depth sounding taken to a depth of 200 or 300 ft. is not much affected by superficial conditions, but these conditions have a great effect in depth soundings to 25 or 30 ft. In shallow soundings the character of the surface medium has a very marked effect on the entire resistivity graph. Fig. 1 illustrates a very striking example. THE incandescent gas mantle is of considerable interest from the standpoint of temperature measurement because it presents a series of apparent contradictions to the established laws of radiation on which are based some of our best methods of temperature determination. One of these contradictions is that the mantle of least brightness (of the commercial thoria-ceria group) is the one having the highest temperature; this, though explicable without any violation of radiation laws, was long a stumbling block to the understanding of the performance of the mantle. Another anomaly is that the energy radiated by the mantle decreases with the rise of temperature, thus apparently invalidating total radiation methods of pyrometry, based on the fourth-power law. The discussion of methods of measuring mantle temperature which follows, is largely taken from an extensive study of the physics of the Welsbach mantle. 1 The incandescent gas mantle consists of a skeleton of refractory oxide of very light weight and open structure, formed by the ignition of a cotton or silk "stocking" previously thoroughly impregnated with salts of certain rare earths. The mantle of commerce is a mixture of approximately 99 parts of thorium oxide with 1 part of cerium oxide. This mixture, discovered largely by accident, gives luminous radiation many times greater than that from either of the constituents taken alone. It is customary to speak of the thoria as the "base" and the ceria as the "colorant," and the commercial mantle represents one of a family in which an oxide of low emissive power is employed as a base, which will assume a high temperature, while a small amount of some other oxide of high visible emissive power is added, which will reduce the temperature of the mantle but little. This is, in general, the most efficient- way, from the standpoint of visible emission, to utilize a substance of high emissive power in the visible spectrum. THIS paper is a brief discussion of the past and present methods employed by the Huntington Works of The International Nickel Co., Inc., in the production of nickel and high nickel alloy seamless tubing. The various operations for both hot and cold processing will be considered in their natural sequence, together with the processing characteristics of the high nickel alloys and some descriptions of the equipment used. The tools and lubricants currently in use will be described. This discussion will relate primarily to nickel, Monel,† and Inconel,† since these are the most common of the many alloys processed into tubing at the Huntington Works. The nominal compositions of the materials are shown in Table I. CONVERSION FROM SOLID BILLETS TO TUBE SHELLS History The commercial production of seamless nickel and high nickel alloy tube shells is a comparatively recent development, the first nickel shells having been produced in 1922, Monel in 1930, and Inconel in 1931 on rotary-type piercing mills. Rolled or forged billets, ranging from 3 ½ - to 7 ½ in. diam, were pierced to produce shells ranging' in size from 4 3/8 in. OD X 0.180 in. wall to 8 3/8 in. OD X 1.0 in. wall. After piercing, the shells. were further processed by hot rolling, reeling, and sizing. Subsequent to these operations the shells were either supplied to the trade as "hot finished" tubes, or were processed by cold drawing to smaller sizes at the Huntington Works of the International Nickel Co. The extrusion of nickel and high nickel alloys also may be classed as a relative newcomer to the field of hot-forming methods, for it was not until 1928 that the commercial extrusion of these alloys was begun on a 600 long ton vertical extrusion press installed at Zenith Works of Henry Wiggin and Co., Ltd., Glasgow, Scotland. This press did considerable pioneer work and the results were so favorable that in 1937 a -2200 long ton horizontal press was installed. The quality of the inside surface of the tubing produced on this press was superior to that produced by piercing on a rotary-type mill and, as a result of this experience, a 4000 ton horizontal extrusion press was installed at the Huntington Works in 1943. Billet Preparation The first step in the extrusion, process is the selection of ingots with good hot malleability, as indicated by the test described by Martin and Bieber.1 Ingots then are forged into rough rounds which are machined to the desired billet diameter on a "bar peeler." This machine consists of a rotary head which carries the cutting tools and is driven by a 200 hp, dc motor. The feed mechanism consists of hydraulically driven input and output carriages on the respective sides of the cutter head. During recent years nickel has had an increasingly important role as an alloying element in the copper-tin bronzes. Nickel additions not only produce better casting alloys but also make alloys whose properties can be varied by precipitation hardening; thus leading to increased commercial application of copper-nickel-tin alloys. Recent investigations have indicated a decrease in the solubility of tin in the alpha phase as the annealing temperature is lowered and as the nickel content is increased within certain limits. A further change caused by the nickel additions is produced in the excess phase of the copper-tin bronzes. The alpha plus delta eutectoid is replaced by a clear precipitated constituent in the alloys containing up to 15 per cent tin and not less than 1 per cent nickel. This paper has a dual purpose. The first is to present a new determination of the alpha-phase boundary in alloys containing from 0 to 20 per cent nickel, together with the liquidus and solidus temperatures above that field. The second purpose is to give the equilibrium conditions existing in alloys exceeding the alpha phase containing up to 31 per cent tin and 5 per cent nickel, so that the disappearance of the alpha plus delta eutectoid constituent may be explained. After considering the earlier investigations of the related alloy systems and the experimental procedure used in this investigation, the alloys will be discussed in groups as separate quasibinary systems containing constant amounts of nickel. The systems considered contain 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 and 20 per cent nickel. The straight copper-tin system was reinvesti-gated in order to establish a foundation on which to build the remaining material. The 1 per cent nickel alloys studied give the relations existing in the region of the eutectoid transformation between the copper-tin system and the 2 per cent nickel copper-tin system which has been investigated in detail. The thorough examination of the latter system was made since 2 per cent of nickel is representative of the commercial additions to the cast bronzes and also because it is sufficient to produce

Though production began in Canada only a short time after the discovery of oil in the United States, it has never attained large proportions, and if we were to judge entirely by the past the reserves of Canada would be put at a very low figure. There are only two areas from which oil is marketed at the present time; one, the old district around Petrolia in southern Ontario, and the other is the small Sheep Creek field near Calgary in Alberta. The former district has produced between 200,000 and 800,000 bbl. annually for the past 40 years, recent figures being near the minimum amount. Sheep Creek has produced about 12,000 bbl. annually for the past five years. The known reserves in proved territory in each of these fields are exceedingly small, when considered in terms of world reserves. The chief hope of Canada for reserves of considerable magnitude lies in the western provinces. Sedimentary rocks similar to those in the productive fields of the United States occupy thousands of square miles in the western provinces, so that it seems likely that somewhere within this great area the peculiar conditions necessary for the presence of oil pools will be found. Prospecting is being carried on energetically by several large companies, as well as by many independents. The Dominion Government, which controls most of the public lands, is pursuing a fairly liberal policy toward the prospector, which should stimulate wild-catting, although the province of British Columbia, which controls public lands within t.hat province, is at present unwilling to give adequate encouragement to make wildcatting attractive. As there is really no assurance that any productive pools will be found in western Canada, the estimates of reserves are subject to a wide possibility of error. In making estimates, the various areas within which geologic conditions are more or less uniform are discussed separately; the estimates given for each area are not given with the idea that there is a reasonable probability of their eventually proving to be correct. It is hoped that an average of these estimates, taken together with those made for other undeveloped countries, will give a correct total of reserves

THE primary purpose of the loading plant is to transfer the finished product from the preparation machines to the railroad car, truck, or barge in which it is to go to market. Secondary purposes of the loading plant are: to prevent excessive degradation of sizes during loading, to reduce segregation as much as possible, and to prevent excessive quantities of very good or off-grade coal from entering any one car. Nonuniformity of consignments is one of the chief sources of complaints by consumers and coal merchants. A properly designed loading plant will do much to reduce complaints and insure uniformity, not only from shipment to shipment but also in each individual consignment along the length of the car and in cross section. DEGRADATION IN STORAGE, LOADING AND SHIPMENT The object in loading is not only to handle the coal without breakage and segregation, but also to produce a well-trimmed load that will ride to its destination without spillage o~ breakage en route. The small sizes present in a car-of prepared coal as received by the purchaser consist of: missed small sizes not screened out in the preparation plant, breakage during loading, and breakage caused by handling en route. For domestic sizes of anthracite shipped from the Pennsylvania anthracite field to Atlantic coast cities, the dealers' loss because of breakage in loading and shipment amounts to from 2 to 5 per cent and for anthracite shipped to Middle West cities, the loss is 8 to 9 per cent. This difference is in part because dealers in the Middle West rescreen their coal more thoroughly than is usual in the East. One dealer handling Illinois No. 6 coal shipped from southern Illinois mines to Chicago reports an average size loss of 10 per cent when lump coal is unloaded with a fork. This runs as low as 5 per cent for carefully loaded coal and as high as 15 per cent for carelessly loaded coal. G. M. TAYLOR,* Colorado Springs, Colo.-The ore treated at the United Eastern is primarily a gold one and is cyanided-the counter-current decantation method being employed. One of our employees visited this plant a few months ago and, on his return, reported that the moisture in the tailing was carrying 20 c. per ton, which would appear to be somewhat high. As this type of plant has been advocated by one of the recognized cyaniding engineering firms in the country, and a number of these plants are in successful operation, it does not seem to me that the dissolved loss could be so high, and I would like to know if any one can give any definite information on this point? J. V. N. DORR, New York, N. Y.-I am very glad that Mr. Taylor has raised this question. When I first read Mr. North's paper and saw his statement, that they had an actual dissolved loss of 21.5 c. per ton, I was very much puzzled at this high loss which appeared avoidable by another decantation or the addition of a rotary filter. Reading it again, however, I noted that the actual dissolved loss of 21.5 c. given was evi-dently obtained by multiplying the assay of solution discharged from Z. thickener by the tonnage. On the basis of 283 tons milled per clay, this means $56.54 going to the clam. He states, however, that he returns from. the dam into the system, 70 tons daily assaying 40 c. per ton or $28 per day, so it would seem reasonable, unless I have overlooked something to regard the actual dissolved loss as $56.54 less $28 or $28.54, equaling 10.8 c. per ton. Even this loss, however, is much higher than good practice elsewhere, and can be accounted for largely by the tonnage being handled, which I believe is 30 per cent. above the capacity planned.

Data are resented on the physical properties of five waxes obtained from fields in Texas and Louisiana in which "parafin" troubles are being experienced. The crude parafin was fractionated into three components, voluble in cold acetone, soluble in boiling acetone, and insoluble in boiling acetone. The acetone insoluble fraction was found to consist essentially of straight chain parafin hydrocarbons in the molecular weight range 525 to 700. Solubilities of the purified high molecular weight parafins were determined in a number of solvents. It was found that in hydrocarbon solvents, including crude oil, solubilities could be calculated satisfactorily by use of ideal solubility relations. In chlorinated, and oxygenated solvents, large deviations from ideal behavior were observed. These deviations could be partially correlated with the internal pressure of the solvent. INTRODUCTION A problem encountered in many producing oil fields is that of "paraffin" deposition. The problem refers to the deposition of material from the crude oil onto tubing, pumping rods, flow lines, or other material contacted by the crude. This problem has been recognized for nearly a hundred years, and numerous investigations have been reported on its causes and prevention or alleviation. One of the more comprehensive of such investigations was published by Reistle1 in 1932. A few of the salient findings of his report are briefly as follows: The term "paraffin" as used to describe this problem refers to the deposit of carbonaceous material which is not soluble or dispersible by the crude oil under the conditions where deposition occurs. The "paraffin" normally consists of high molecular weight paraffin hydrocarbons, both straight chain and branched, resins and asphaltic materials of undetermined nature, occluded oil and water, and possibly sand. In consistency, the deposit may vary from a soft, sticky material, to one which is hard and brittle. Deposits are usually black, although lighter colors are sometimes observed. Under the conditions of temperature, pressure, and crude oil composition occurring in the underground reservoir, the paraffin is in suspension or solution in the crude. As the oil flows to the surface, there is generally a reduction of temperature, pressure, and the amount of dissolved gases contained in the oil. Reduction of temperature and gas break-out were shown by Reistle to be factors causing reduced solubility of the paraffin in the crude. Thus, as the crude containing paraffin rises to the surface and flows to storage tanks at atmospheric temperature, the solubility of the paraffin may be exceeded. Deposition will begin at the point in the system where the temperature of the system falls below its cloud point, and continue as long as there is a further drop in the solution power of the crude for the paraffin. The severity of the deposition as well as the location of the bulk of the deposition, i.e., in subsurface or surface equipment, will depend on the amount of paraffin originally in the crude, the manner in which pressure and temperature of the crude

The map exhibited* as an example of my method of construct ing geological strata-maps is essentially an educational appliance. The method, however, is available for the production of maps of comparatively small areas, which, I am confident, will be found of great practical value to mining engineers. Before stating how the method may be so applied I will briefly describe the map exhibited, as the easiest way of making my meaning clear. Almost any region might be taken. This map represents the eastern half of the United States; and the geology is that of the map issued by the Geological Survey, and revised and extended subsequently by Professor Hitchcock for your Institute. I use ten cards, of the colors used in the geological map, each having the geog raphy of the area printed upon it; and I superimpose these in the order in which the colors occur in the index to the map. I next cut away a portion of each card, excepting the lowest, leaving only so much of each as represents the exposure of the formation of that color plus all those which overlie it. When that is done, the whole, looked at from a distance, appears to be an ordinary geological map. Looked at more closely, however, the formations are seen to overlie one another, as in nature. The cards are covered with glass in a frame, which, hinged at the bottom edge, can be let down. The cards are then found to be all hinged in the same manner, and they, too, may be lowered, one after the-other. MORTON WEBB, Germiston, Transvaal, South Africa (communication to the Secretary*):-The experience of Mr. Boehmer in the Leadville district and his reputation as an engineer assure the interest of anything he may write on the ore-bodies of that district; and all engineers who have operated in Leadville will agree that the theory of the origin of the Leadville deposits, as given by Mr. Emmons in his famous monograph, does not adequately explain the genesis of all the deposits. The solution of the problem does not, however, appear to be quite so simple as Mr. Boehmer would make it; and the advance pamphlet issued by the U. S. Geological Survey, pending the completion of the main report, shows that there is still much ground for controversy. No doubt the later eruptives had a greater influence on the deposition of the ore-bodies than was thought at the time of the first investigation by the Survey; but it has always appeared to me that the influence exerted by these dikes was more in the nature of a physical than a chemical one. The weight of evidence in recent years is mostly in the direction of ascension rather than lateral secretion; and one of the strongest evidences is the fact that most of the ore-bodies lie under one of the comparatively impervious layers which help to make up the structure of these hills. On Iron hill I have found a very persistent white porphyry sheet, split off from the overlying porphyry and lying from 30 to 60 ft. below the main white porphyry and blue limestone contact. This sheet varies from a few to 50 ft. in thickness, and where found adds another "contact" to that region ; some of the largest ore-bodies on Iron hill lie immediately under this sheet. The host dolomite of the Pine Point lead-zinc ore is a prolific ground-water aquifer that occurs locally under watertable and artesian conditions. Mining schedules and severe climate require rapid and thorough dewatering of open pits. Pumping-test methods, common to ground-water supply studies, were applied to dewatering design for a model ore pit in 1968. Procedures for testing and design at other ore bodies were established and have been carried out successfully by mine personnel. At the inception of ground-water studies, parts of ore bodies were below prevailing ground-water levels by 35 to more than 150 ft. Movement of ground water through the coarsely recrystallized dolomite occurs largely through fractures and solution openings. Because the overburden deposits consist mainly of glacial till, it is estimated that the recharge to the aquifer is about 25% of the 13-in. annual precipitation. Natural groundwater flow is northeastward toward Great Slave Lake. Background data included extensive diamond drill hole logs and cores and static level data for a number of ore pits. An ore pit, known as N-42, that required 40 ft of dewatering was selected for the initial application of the pumping-test method. Production wells, cased with 14in. pipe, were drilled to a depth of 300 ft on the rim of the ore pit. An idea of what is meant by "Ultrafine Minerals Or Slimes" as used in the title can be had by an examination of Fig. I. Particle size distributions are presented for a crude kaolin clay, a coarse fraction and a fine fraction. The crude kaolin as mined was blunged with water, degritted through a 325-mesh Tyler screen, and dispersed with sodium silicate. The dispersed crude was then centrifuged in the laboratory into the coarse and fine fractions shown in the figure. The distribution curves were obtained by the well known sedimentation technique of Casagrande' using a long arm centrifuge to obtain equivalent spherical diameters down to 0.2 microns on the finer fraction. Fig. 1 shows the coarse fraction kaolin to be 50% finer than 3 microns, while the crude kaolin is 50% finer than 1.4 microns, and the fine fraction 50% finer than 0.6 microns. For comparison 53 microns on the horizontal scale would represent Stokesian diameters which would just pass a 325- mesh Tyler screen, taking into consideration the Andreasen sieve correction factor of 1.22 X the screen opening.' Another helpful comparison is the surface areas, which in square meters per gram, are 0.044 for 53 micron particles, 0.77 for 3 microns, 1.65 for 1.4 microns, and 5.0 for 0.46 micron particles. RECOGNITION of the benefits to be gained from the continuous casting of molten steel into finished or semifinished products has been given by scientific minds since the very beginnings of steel plant technology. In fact, Sir Henry Bessemer is credited with the first of a long list of patents' issued by the U. S. Patent Office for a process which would accomplish this desirable end. None of these early ideas attained practical success and, as a result, the conventional method of teeming into ingot molds became an integral part of modern steelmaking operations. This procedure, although refined to keep pace with the changes which have come about in steelmaking and finishing facilities, is recognized to have inherent shortcomings which adversely affect manufacturing costs and steel quality. Interest in the continuous casting of steel persists because the process is directed toward avoiding some obvious weaknesses of conventional ingot casting. It has been recognized that should it be possible to substitute any of the continuous casting techniques under current development for ingot casting, it would no longer be necessary to make large capital investments in primary rolling equipment, the sole purpose of which is to reduce ingot castings to a form rollable on finishing mills. The results reported in the continuous casting of non-ferrous metals and specialty steels indicate that in addition to avoiding the primary rolling mills there is some basis for expecting significant improvements in yield, surface, and internal quality. Recognizing the shortcomings of the conventional procedures, the Inland Steel Co., in cooperation with Atlas Steels Ltd. and the Freyn Dept. of the Kop- pers Co. Inc., embarked upon a program to evaluate certain aspects of continuous casting in order to determine whether the process could be applied practically to an existing integrated steel plant producing 'large tonnages of carbon steels. TO assist in this evaluation a study was carried out in which several types of low carbon steel were continuously cast in an existing machine. It is the purpose of this paper to review some of the results obtained in the casting studies and to interpret the information that was obtained so as to indicate factors that must be considered in assessing operating limitations and plant capacities. Despite the early interest in the continuous casting of steel, the actual application to the steel industry is relatively recent. At present, there are about 25 operating plants casting steel, most of which have been built in the past decade. None of these plants could be classified as large in terms of the tonnages that are being processed by the major integrated steel plants. In contrast to the situation in the steel industry, there has been widespread adoption of the continuous process in the casting of nonferrous alloys, particularly aluminum and copper. As a result, much of the basic information that was required to apply the process to steel was developed in the nonferrous industries. In this respect, a most important contribution was the development of the Junghans2 system, which was initially designed for the casting of nonferrous metals and later applied to the casting of steel. Alternative methods for casting have also been proposed by Babcock and Wilcox Tube Co.,'" the British Iron and Steel Research Association,5 and the Gebruder Bohler A. G.13 Each of these methods is now being used successfully for the casting of special steels in small experimental plants or in modest sized commercial steelworks.
