THE mining and removal of coal from two or more beds, either simultaneously or consecutively, in vertically adjacent areas have always been matters of concern to mine operators from both operating and recovery points of view. However, with the progressive introduction and use of electrical and mechanical facilities, such problems assume even greater proportions. In this paper typical cases occuring in Cambia County, Pa., are given and procedures whereby such problems may be .greatly reduced, if not entirely eliminated, are suggested. Throughout a considerable portion of the Central Pennsylvania bituminous coal region, particularly in Cambria County (Fig. I), the portion of the region to which references in this paper are made, large areas are encountered where two or more beds of coal occur and have been mined extensively since the earliest days of mining in the county. Generally, operations were commenced in one bed of coal on a property, following which, as conditions appeared to warrant, operations were commenced in another bed or beds on the same property, in some instances by the same operator. Operating results by no means have been uniformly successful, as the following review of some typical cases indicates, partly because of lack of experience in earlier cases and in certain later cases to disregard for the experiences of earlier operators. It is suggested that repetitions of such failures may be reduced largely, if not eliminated entirely, by adherence to a few basic principles founded upon past experiences. Geology and Stratigraphy The geology, stratigraphy, and relief of almost all of Cambria County have been studied and reported at length by the U. S. Geological Survey in its Johnstown, Ebensburg and Barnesboro-Patton Folios and other publications, by the Pennsylvania Geological Survey and by various individuals. All exposed rocks occurring within the boundaries of the county are of sedimentary origin, consisting of alternate beds of sandstone, slate, shale, fireclay, coal, limestone, etc., and all have been classified by the U. S. Geological Survey as extending from the upper strata of the Catskill formation, Devonian system, to and including, in a few hilltop areas, the lower strata of the Monongahela formation, Carboniferous system. Included within that range is the Allegheny formation, Pennsylvania series, which embraces all of the commercially important beds of coal that occur in the county, viz., the A, or Brookville, to the E, or Upper Freeport, both inclusive, shown in Fig. 2. The measures are traversed by a series of anticlines and synclines, extending in a northeasterly and southwesterly direction, which form broad, gently sloping basins (flat to 15 pct pitch, exceptionally to 25 pct). However, the topography of the surface is such that long lines of outcrops of all beds of coal overlying bed B, and to a limited extent bed B also, occur over large areas, a factor which contributed to the early and extensive development of mining activities in the county. Earliest mining developments of commercial importance were made in B, C', D, and E beds of coal, and it is in these beds that the principal mining operations are being conducted. To a limited extent, mining operations also have been conducted in local areas in the A, B rider and C beds. Coal beds being mined today range in thickness from approximately 28 to 60 in. Intervals between the respective beds of coal are variable but conform somewhat to the following general averages: A to B, 60 to 100 ft.; B to C, 50 ft.; C to C', 70 ft.; C' to D, 45 ft.; and D to E, 45 ft. The following are typical mining cases obserced over a period of years in various parts of the county.

Discussion of the paper of DORSEY HAGER, to be presented at the Colorado meeting, September, 1918, and printed in Bulletin No. 138, June, 191S, pp. 1109 to 1118. WALLACE E. PRATT, Wichita Falls, Tex. (written discussion*).¬Mr. Hager has touched upon interesting problems related to the broad subject with which he has entitled his paper. As to the existence of the important structural feature in the buried Bend series, which Mr. Hager constructs from well-logs, and designates as the "Bend Arch," there seems to be general agreement among a number of observers. Indeed, M. G. Cheney1 and Robt. T. Hill2 have each published structural maps of the Bend Arch that do not differ essentially from the map shown in Mr. Hager's Fig. 1. The reflection, in the overlying, unconformable Cretaceous, of certain folds in the Pennsylvanian, with which the petroleum accumulations has to do, is an important observation on the part of Mr. Hager, since, as he says, much critical territory is covered by Cretaceous, and it is highly desirable that the underlying Pennsylvanian structure be mapped, if possible. If the folds in the Pennsylvanian are of post-Cretaceous age, then it should be possible, in spite of the intervening unconformity, to determine approximately the position of buried folds beneath the Cretaceous overlap. The idea of post-Cretaceous folding would not be out of accord with the suggestion by Carroll H. Wegemann that the folding of the Permian beds in southern Oklahoma was still in progress as late as the Tertiary.3 But most observers have related the folds in the Pennsylvanian and Permian beds at the surface, both in North Texas and southern Oklahoma, to the process of. emergence of the land area at the end of the Permian. It seems more probable that the reflection of Pennsylvanian folds in the unconformable Cretaceous which Mr. Hager observed is due to long continued persistence of stresses which were largely relieved at the close of the Permian, than that the principal period of folding was post-Cre-taceous; this being the case, it seems likely that only folds of greatest intensity in the Pennsylvanian will, be decipherable in the Cretaceous overburden, and that many promising structural features are so concealed by the Cretaceous as to escape detection except by drilling.

I HAVE the pleasure of exhibiting samples of the rock in which the South African diamonds are said to occur, for which I am in debted to Mr. Franz Groeger, of Vienna, formerly an assistant of the Royal Imperial Geological Institution, whose account of the general geology of Southern Africa was contained in a recent number of the proceedings of that Institution. The rock is apparently a sort of tufa, evidently of volcanic origin. Mr. Groeger assured me that it could be seen in situ, bounded by uplifted stratified rocks; and that diamonds had been mined from it, by means of shafts, some distance below the surface. Groeger calls it "greenstone-tufa," and says of it, in the proceedings of the Geological Institution, " it breaks through the younger members of Group III [lower Trias and Jura], . . .. and crops out in oval masses, filling fissures . . ..The occurrence of this tufa is not locally limited, but has been traced and proved already over a large territory." DR. HUNT remarked that the material looked like the trass of the Rhine region. He thought it a new occurrence for diamonds. He believed diamonds to belong to ancient crystalline rocks, although these materials might be brought tip by volcanic agency, and the diamonds remain unaltered. In the volcanic rocks of Auvergne, crystals of sapphire, zircon, and spinel are found; and yet no one supposes that these minerals have been generated by volcanic agency. He had had a conversation with Bertrand de Lom on this subject, who agreed with him that these minerals, being hard and resistant,

INTRODUCTION Numerous deposits of lead and zinc sulfides, often accompanied by barite and fluorite, occur in carbonate host rocks throughout central and eastern United States. So similar are the deposits in broad general characteristics that they long have been classified as Mississippi Valley type. They differ widely, however, in details such as metal ratios, age of host rock, type of ore-bearing structure, and probable time of mineralization. The theories developed to explain the source and transport of the metals are many and are known to all. The deposits have been termed telethermal on the basis of their presumably shallow occurrence and the attempt to relate the metals to the classic hydro- thermal sequence. 1t is now recognized that deposits of this type can occur at any depth; the only depth limitation is thickness of the sedimentary section. Ideas on the source of the metals also have changed, A rapidly growing body of evidence suggests that the metals were brought by concentrated brines from nearby sedimentary basins. The hypothesis preferred today by many geologists postulates that the metals were deposited during the course of normal sedimentation in depositional basins of miogeosynclinal or orthogeosynclinal type. At some time after deposition of the sediments, the metals were carried out of the basins by migrating brines; the brines moved laterally and upward into structurally high areas; they entered any reservoir-like structure, either primary or secondary in origin, that happened to be available; in this reservoir, possibly in a sulfur-rich environment, the metals were precipitated as ore minerals.

QUICKSILVER is a body that consists of flowing and liquid materials, almost like water with a shining whiteness; it is composed by Nature of a viscous, subtle substance with an overflowing abundance of moistness and coldness together. This composition, in the opinion of the philosophic alchemists, is a thing that is very disposed to become metal-indeed they say that it is the original seed of all metals. When it lacks the warmness and dryness or the specific time that they require, it cannot congeal and so remains in the form that we see as an imperfect thing without becoming metal. These clever investigators have also called it mercury in consideration of its properties, perhaps because of its resemblance to the planet of him whose actions place him between gods and men, according to the poets in their stories. Thus these investigators think that this has a similar place among perfect metals, since it is the primary mineral matter. It might also be that they called it so because like the god Mercury it is winged and fugitive, and by virtue of its powerful subtlety penetrates all things and can issue forth from them at will. But let it be called by any name they wish-it does not matter to us. I, like them, shall sometimes call it mercury and sometimes [23 ] quicksilver as it has been named to me, and you will understand it as such. Now I shall leave aside the disputes on whether it is the primary matter of metals or not, since I have said enough concerning this question in the first chapter of the First Book. In order to approach what the philosophers say about it, I say that it may well be material about to be converted into metal, but since it is seen to be so ill-proportioned and so badly decocted, I cannot believe that it can be disposed to the generation of all kinds of metals. Indeed, if it is, I think that if its necessary processes had not been interrupted it would be more apt to generate lead, tin, iron, or even silver rather than copper or gold. And if we wish to consider it in relation to the natural complexions [of metals] or to the power of the, planets, I think that mercury is far distant from those of gold and from the power of the sun and of the moon. Can the auriferous slate deposits of the Southern mining region ever be successfully worked ? is a question that has been often asked me by persons seeking investments in Southern mines. As the subject is one that has given me much thought during the past few years, I have decided to present my conclusions to the members of the Institute for their consideration. Those who have had the opportunity of exploring the region mentioned above, will readily reall to mind numerous localities, to which their attention was directed by would-be miners, as "rich and desirable properties," in which there were but few quartz seams running in every direction through fine-grained talcose slate. Most of the gold in such formations was always found disseminated through the slate, and but a small percentage contained in the quartz. Such are the deposits I propose to discuss in this paper. Of course there are many excellent quartz mines in the South that are paying the owners good profits, and many more to my knowledge, that are not being worked for obvious reasons. But it is out of the question to suppose that these slate deposits can be practically

By 1950 or soon thereafter facilities will be available in foreign countries for the production, transportation, and refining of about 4,305,000 bbl per day of crude oil—a volume not far short of current United States output. This is indicated by announced plans for foreign expansion, - some of the work being already under way. The projected potential production is about 1,500,000 bbl per day or 50 pct above the record-setting foreign production of 2,810,000 bbl daily in 1946. The scheduled new foreign facilities are equivalent to almost one third of the present facilities of the United States. Fears that so much additional foreign oil may flood world markets and disrupt the domestic industry of the United States are not justified. The projected foreign expansion apparently has been planned on a sound business basis, with careful consideration of the world's actual need for all the projected additional production. Materially increased world demand for petroleum promises to absorb the increased supplies without ill effect upon the domestic industry. Even by applying conservative estimates of both foreign and domestic demand, it is indicated that world requirements can absorb the projected larger foreign output and still permit continued increase in United States production. World demand would have to increase only 5.7 pct per year in the 1947 to 1950 period to absorb the prospective supply. Such an increase may be conservatively projected, in view of past and current trends. Introduction Recent announcements of plans for expanding petroleum facilities in the Middle East and Venezuela foreshadow an unusually sharp increase in foreign production in the immediate future. Therefore, the next few years will bring far-reaching changes in world petroleum affairs, with foreign petroleum production and other activities assuming much greater importance than formerly. Tabulation of figures on development already under way or planned indicates that in the next several years facilities will be available for producing, transporting and refining twice the prewar production of foreign fields and about 50 pct or nearly 1,500,000 bbl a day above their record-level output of 1946. To say that foreign fields may be producing such an enlarged quantity by 1950 is, of course, a statement of great significance to everyone connected .with the oil industry and especially to those of the American petroleum industry. A production of 1,500,000 bbl daily is equal to the combined yield of the states of Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and New Mexico. This means that within the next several years foreign petroleum facilities will undergo a new expansion equivalent to one third of the present facilities of the United States. To think of such an expansion in foreign production is to raise at this meeting the question of what this prospective foreign development means for the United States, the American petroleum industry in general, and the American engineer and technologist in particular. It is only logical to question whether or

FLAKING or hair-line crack formation has been a major problem confronting the producer of large alloy steel forgings.' Today it is generally conceded that hydrogen in one or more forms in alloy steel sections is a requisite for flaking. Hence an obvious remedy is a thermal cycle that reduces the hydrogen content to some low level. In practice, this generally means holding the material at some subcritical temperature for a period of time depending on the size of the ingot or forging. Mechanical properties of the nether roof rocks play a substantial role in maintenance of mine openings. On longwall faces too low strength is a cause of rock- falls which bring about delays in face advance, and hazard to the miners, while too high strength may result in over hanging of roof rocks in gobs, sometimes over a large area, initiating dynamic periodical pressures. Hence, efforts have been undertaken to develop methods of caveability evaluation for proper selection of roof control system and of longwall-face supports. DESCRIPTIVE CLASSIFICATIONS One of the basic qualitative criteria for classification of roof types with different caveability is the criterion of geological structure. The 26-stages scale worked out for conditions of Donetz Coalfield. USSR, by E.T. Proyavkin et al.(l) may be an example of that type of classification. This scale is presented graphically in Fig. 1. The first types of roofs according to this scale are easily caving immediately after exposure of a small surface, while the last be- long to the strongest roofs which over-hang in waste and require artificial fracturing. Observations and measurements carried out also in Donetz mines lead W.T. Davidyanc (2) to following classification: Class I - weak and densely bedded rocks very easily caving after each advance of supports. The roof subsidence over a waste edge is: [ ] where: h is roof subsidence, m M is thickness of the seam being mined, m S is width of an opening, m Class II - medium caveability and small main roof movements [ ] Class III - hardly breakable rocks, thicker beds with higher strength: caving by large blocks. After exposure of larger roof surfaces the movements of the main roof strata may affect an opening. [ ] Class IV - very hardly breakable rocks - thick, monolithic sandstones: they cause considerable difficulties in working with caving. [ ] Class V - thin-bedded rocks featured by the capacity of a smooth subsidence without disintegration into loose blocks with keeping contact between the particular blocks in a bed. In this classification mining with full roof caving is recommended for class I-III and only exceptionally for class IV. In many coal fields, qualitative and quantitative observations of roof rocks behavior have been carried out: as a result relations and characteristics found in certain mines are given. As an example, Kizielov Coalfield data in the USSR given by B.S. Vinokur (3) may be mentioned. In working thin pitching seams man- less system of undercutting the seam by means of rope saw is used there. The author separated four classes of roofs and gave, for every class, the empirical relation between the extracted area and the time of roof stability. The size of the stable area of exposed roof for particular classes is as follows: 120 to 150 m2 (1291 to 1614 ft2 ), 170 to 200 m2 (1829 to 2152 ft2), 250 to 280 m2 (2690 to 3013 ft2 ) and 350 to 400 m2 (3766 to 4300 ft ). For Kuznetz coalfield in the USSR the following classification of roofs was developed at the WIMI Institute in Leningrad: Class I - completely unstable: impact strength in- dex of rock f = up to 1.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 it) wide, exposed after shearer's cut holds stable during the time not longer than 5 min. Class II - low stability: f = 1.5 to 2.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 ft) wide and up to 4.0 m (13 it) long, exposed after shearer's cut holds stable during 5 to 20 min. Class III - medium stability: f = 2.51 to 3.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 it) wide and 4.0 to 25 m (13 to 82 ft) long, exposed after shearer's cut holds stable from 20 min. to 2 hours. Class IV - stable: f = 3.51 to 4.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 ft) wide and 25 m (82 it) long exposed after shearer's cut is stable during the time longer than 2 hours. The appraisal of oil wells, now that we have the age-size method of making composite decline curves, and the present worth of successive time units method of valuation, has its greatest remaining uncertainty in the difficulty of extending into the future the price curve and the composite production curve. The point of attack in this paper is the carrying on (or extrapolation) of the production curve. Led by the valuable discovery of Lewis and Beal that the decline curve is nearer the hyperbolic class, y = (x + a)-", than any other form, the current practice is the graphic method. The data are plotted on logarithmic paper and shifted with successive trials until the line becomes straight. This straight line can then be extended into the future. The method was a great help during the period when, for tax purposes, there was need for a quick method even though the errors were large. Now that we seek greater validity in our methods we find the following faults with the current method. 1. Where the shift is great (it exceeds 10 in some cases) the scale cannot be read with the necessary precision so that the resulting data would give a very irregular and inaccurate curve. 2. Where the curve cannot be straightened on logarithmic paper because of sigmoid shape the method has a serious systematic error. We believe the sigmoid curves to be more common than usually supposed, indeed when one considers the number of variable causative factors this is to be expected. We have therefore been seeking a method that is free from these difficulties and yet not so laborious as fitting a curve to the data and the calculation from the formula which, since it involves looking up logarithms, is unduly time-consuming. The method here described has been developed on the basis suggested by Earl Oliver, that the amount of oil produced per month or year for each reduction of production of a barrel of oil per day could be plotted to advantage. The object of all classification is to group together things which are alike, and separate those which are unlike. This object is essentially a practical one, enabling us to apply past experience to new conditions. Many costly large-scale experiments lose half their importance for want of proper description of the coal used, and the consequent impossibility of predicting that other coals will behave in the same way. I do not, therefore, make a fundamental distinction between "scientific'' and "use" classifications, except in so far as use depends on conditions, such as size or impurities which are not related to the nature of the coal substance itself. The characters chosen to define the classes of coal must be such as are accompanied by as many other properties as possible. It is not to be expected that any system of classification will enable us to predict every property of coal, since all specimens have an individuality of their own. But specimens can be grouped by a number of resemblances into species. Further, species which resemble each other can be grouped into genera. Elementary Composition as a Basis of Classification There can be little doubt that the ultimate or elementary composition of "pure coal" is the best basis of classification. It was soon after the perfection of the method of elementary analysis of organic substances by Liebig that Regnault, the distinguished chemist and physicist, laid down the principle that coals of the same kind vary only between narrow limits of elementary composition. This is still the widest generalization that can be made about coal. Upon it the metallurgist Gruner based his classification. In some quarters the value of the ultimate composition was denied, Stein going so far as to say that it teaches us nothing of importance about coal. One still hears statements that it is like crushing a work of art in a mortar and analyzing the powder, or like counting the number of times a given letter occurs in a sentence. Such comparisons are misleading, and the criticism might be applied to organic chemistry as a whole. Nor is the existence of isomerism, or of entirely different substances which

Stimulated emission from Nd+3 in yttrium uanadate fYVOJ is reported. Single crystals of YVO4:Nd, obtained from Linde Col-p., have improved substantially in the last several months. Pulsed thresholds of YVO, laser rods are now approximately 2 to 3 5, cowparable to tliose for YAG:Nd. Yttrium uanadate crystalli~es irz a space group similar to zircon. All rare-earth vanadates have this structure. Rare-earth ions sucll as Nd+3 which substitutes for Y+3, aye situated irz a strong tetragonal crystal field which lacks inversion symmetry. This condition increases the p'robability of the parity-forbidden f — f transitions. Yttrium anadate has strong absorption bands beyond -1000A. These are clue to Y-O, V-O charge transfer and molecular transitions. Under 2537 and 3660A irradiation pure YVO, fluroresces u bright yel-LOLO. This fli&orescence is corrzpletely quenched in YV04:Ncl crystals. This and other evidence of energy trut~sjer from the lattice is repovted. Optzcul atz 1user pvope 1-ties o! YI'U4:E[t are brieJy described. THIS paper describes some of the optical and laser properties of Nd+3- and Eu+3-doped yttrium orthovana-date (YVO4). It reports laser action for the first time in this low-symmetry host. For some time we have pursued a research program concerning laser hosts' wherein the rare-earth (RE) ion is situated at a site of low crystal symmetry so as to increase the probability of radiative transitions. Single crystals of doped and undoped YV04 are grown from iridium crucibles in an oxyhydrogen gas-fired furnace by a modified Czochralski technique.' This material crystallizes in a D4li tetragonal space group of the zircon (ZrSiO,) type.3 All RE vanadates have the same structure and form solid solutions with YVO4. Therefore, it will be possible to investigate a variety of cross-pumped laser systems, as in the case of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG).4 At present, ~d'~-doped YAG is one of the most efficient solid-state lasers.5 Accordingly, most of the material to follow will compare the properties of YV04 to those of YAG. Fig. 1 shows the relative transmission of YAG and two types of YVO4. "Pure" YVO4 has a normal absorption edge and is colorless. A second type has a broad absorption peaking near 4200A and is yellow. Rubin and Van uitert6 suggest the yellow material is slightly reduced. Samples of each type are being investigated by electron spin resonance,7 but these studies are so far inconclusive. The pulsed laser threshold is much lower in the yellow material than in the colorless. Therefore, the absorption at 3500 to 5000.4 transfers energy to the Ndi3 ions. Photons of wave length between 2000 and 4500A cause undoped YVO4 to fluoresce at 4800, 5250, 5460, 5540, and 5750A. This emission, previously reported by Brixner and Abramsom,8 is partially quenched by EU'~ and completely quenched by Ndt3 at room temperature due to energy transfer from the lattice to the RE ions. At low temperatures, some lattice fluorescence is present. This implies that the energy-transfer process is in part phonon-assisted. Although the YVO, single crystals used in this work were prepared from Y2O3 containing less than 0.01 pct rare-earth impurities, there is aopossibility that emission lines between 4800 and 5750A are due to dysprosium, terbium, and so forth. However, these lines are not observed in other compounds, prepared from Y2O3, such as YP04, Y2MoO6, and so forth. Furthermore, extensive absorption measurements on our "pure" YV04 single crystals between 0.4 and 5.0 failed to reveal any characteristic rare-earth lines. Fig. 2 compares the absorption spectra of Ndt3-doped YAG and YVO4from 0.6 to 1.0 . The Ndt3 absorptions are labeled according to free ion, R-S coupling. These term designationsQ are appropriate for YAG:Nd. They appear to be inappropriate for YV04:Nd. In YVO, neodymium must substitute for yttrium. The yttrium site is situated In a strong tetragonal field, where point symmetry is (42m) or possibly lower.1° However, the reduced splitting of the Stark components of the YV0,:Nd spectrum implies that the NdT3 ion is in a cubic site. The only plausible explanation for this discrepancy is that the Ndt3 ion is in a low-symmetry site, lacking inversion symmetry, so that a substantial admixture of 4f and 5d wave functions occurs. In this case, R-S coupling is not valid and J is no longer a good quantum number." Consistent with this view, the 4~ metastable level of YV04:Nd has an oscillator strength larger and a

The photoluminescence of Pr, Nd, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb in CdS, and Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb in ZnSe has been observed from crystals Prepared by diffusion using rare earth metals and an excess chalcogen pressure. For a given temperature, time, and chalcogen pressure the spectral characteristics were very reproducible from run to run, and the emission intensity for Nd, Er, and Yb in CdS was as high or higher than the best vapor phase doped crystals we have grown. For a few rare earths it was found that certain conditions of diffusion tend to yield optimum rare earth emission intensity with respect to the background lattice emission. Photoluminescence measwements of Yb in CdS as a function of depth gave a profile which was neither a Gaussian nor complementary error function. Part of the profile appears to arise from a fast component of the diffusion and the other part from a slow diffusing component. At 960°C and 33 atm S pressure, a com -plimentary error function approximation of the slow diffusing component gave a diffusion coefficient of D = 1.3 x 10-9 sq cm per sec. MOST of the studies of emission from rare earth ions in II-VI compounds have been reported on crystals doped during growth,1,2 although Kingsley and Aven prepared ZnSe:Er by diffusion for paramagnetic resonance and fluorescence studies. Pappalardo and Dietz prepared CdS:Yb by diffusion, but they made optical absorption measurements., We know of no study on the properties of rare earth diffusion in the II-VI compounds. To date we have diffused Pr, Nd, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb into CdS, and Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb into ZnSe and observed the rare earth emission spectra. For a given temperature and chalcogen pressure, the emission characteristics are very reproducible from run to run and for Yb, Nd, and Er in CdS, as good as the best crystals we had prepared by doping during vapor phase growth.2 The emission of Pr, Ho, and Tm has been observed in CdS prepared by diffusion for the first time. Previous attempts2 to prepare these later three materials by vapor phase growth were unsuccessful. The problem of obtaining reproducible characteristics in II-VI semiconductor compound work is well known.5 Not only is it difficult to reproduce results from one laboratory to another but it is sometimes difficult to reproduce results from one growth run to another under ostensibly identical conditions within one laboratory. This situation has been particularly bothersome in research on the luminescence of rare earth activated ZnS1 and Cds2. Crystals from one vapor phase growth run would show very strong rare earth line emission while crystals from a nearly identical run would show no rare earth emission. It was also observed on occasion that the intensity of the rare earth emission was not constant over the entire volume of a single crystal. MATERIAL PREPARATION AND INSTRUMENTATION Vapor phase grown boules of CdS were supplied by Dow Corning. This material was characterized by a free electron concentration of n - 3.5 x 1015 cm-3 and Hall mobility of 350 sq cm per v sec at room temperature. There were microscopic voids and decorated precipitates in some samples. The precipitates annealed out at diffusion temperatures but the voids remained. Single crystal rectangular samples of mm dimensions were sawed from the boules. The ZnSe was polycrystalline, UHP grade from Eagle-Picher. Poly-crystalline samples were sawed from the ingots. The samples were lapped, polished on one side, etched in a solution of 0.5 M K2Cr2O7 in 16 N H2SO4, and thoroughly washed in distilled water. A sample, excess sulfur (or selenium), and 5 mg of rare earth metal (turnings) were sealed in a 3.6 cm3 quartz ampoule at about 2 X 10-5 torr. The high chalcogen pressure used (1 to 30 atm) prevented thermal etching of the crystals and affected the diffusivity and solubility of the rare earth ions in the crystal lattice. For meaningful or reproducible results, it is thus necessary to specify the vapor pressure at which the diffusion was carried out. It is assumed that a negligible amount of the chalcogen was used in the formation of rare earth sulfides or selenides Our sulfur vapor pressure calculations are based on data assuming S2, S6, and S, molecules only in which case the equilibrium constants are given by6 where the pressures are expressed in torr. Selenium vapor consists of a mixture of Se2, Se4, Se6, and Se6 molecules. The selenium vapor pressure was calculated using equilibrium constants given by The status of the rare earth source during diffusion is unknown, i.e., the partial pressures of the rare earth metal and of the rare earth chalcogenides has not been determined. All emission spectra were recorded at 77°K on a Perkin-Elmer model 98-G spectrometer using a 640 line per mm grating. No correction was made for the spectrometer and detector spectral sensitivity. This paper deals with the practical application of the Dutch State Mines cyclone separator for fine-coal cleaning. The more important operating variables are discussed, and results of a number of continuous-scale tests on various fine coals with a 6-in. cyclone separator are given. Descriptions of the Cyanamid Pilot Plant and the 50 tph Cyclone Separator Plant at the Emma Washery in Holland are included. TODAY, as never before, the coal producers of this country are faced with the necessity for obtaining maximum yield of marketable coal of all sizes down to and including the finest. Particular interest is being displayed in a more effective means of recovering the finer sizes which in the past so often have been discarded to waste or treated by inadequate equipment. The reasons for this interest are easily understood. Rising mining costs have resulted in the increased use of mechanized equipment underground for full seam mining. This, in turn, means more refuse in the run-of-mine and also more fines in the feed going to the cleaning plant. Stringent antistream pollution laws now make it necessary at least to impound the fines, and usually it is a paying proposition to recover the coal from these fines before sending them to the storage area. Finally, the market and price of the finer sizes has increased, but at the same time specifications have tightened and the demand is for higher grade products. During the past four years a great deal of publicity has been given to this new process and apparatus for treating fine sizes of ores as well as coal. Excellent discussions of the apparatus itself and the theoretical aspects of the basic operating principles involved in its operation have been presented by M. G. Driessen,1-3 M. R. Geer and H. F. Yancey,4,5 J. W. Hyer6 and more recently by D. A. Dahlstrom8 as well as others.7,9-11 In view of this, it has been decided to include in the present paper only a brief description of the cyclone separator and its operating principles. This paper deals primarily with some of the more practical commercial aspects of the process and equipment required for its operation; the variables in the operation of the cyclone, their effect and means for control; and the results obtained with a 6-in. semicommercial size separator on a variety of fine coals, bituminous and anthracite, using finely ground magnetite for the separating medium solids. A description is included of the commercial-size cyclone separator pilot plant installed by the Dutch State Mines at its Emma mine in Holland, where finely ground slate is utilized as medium solids. Field of Application: The Dutch State Mines cyclone separator operates most efficiently on ores and coal in the size range of % in. to about 48 mesh. On some types of feed, effective separation can be made on sizes as small as 100 mesh, but up to the present, this may be considered exceptional. The Lucky Friday mine east of Mullan, Idaho, is an outstanding example of a property in the Coeur dlAlene district where a small and insignificant-appearing silver-lead-zinc vein at the surface has changed at depth into a large vein of great importance. The Lucky Friday vein has little if any surface expression and above the 1200 level the ore shoots are small and discontinuous. Between the 1200 level and 2450 level, the lowest developed level, the main ore shoot has shown remarkable improvement on each succeeding lower level, and today the mine is one of the major lead-silver producers in the Coeur d'Alene district. History: The Lucky Friday property is on the north side of the South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River in sections 25, 26 and 35, T. 48 N., R. 5 E., Hunter mining district, Shoshone County, Idaho. This is about one mile east of the town of Mullan, which serves the eastern portion of the Coeur d'Alene district. The southern part of the property is crossed by a branch line of the Northern Pacific Ry. and by U. S. Highway 10. This highway is the principal road crossing the panhandle of Idaho and connects the district with Spokane, Wash., on the west and Missoula, Mont., on the east. The main portal and surface plant of the Lucky Friday mine is at an elevation of 3365 ft, only a short distance above the valley floor and a few hundred feet from U. S. Highway 10. so the mine is readily accessible for year-round operation. The property is comprised of six claims, known as the Lucky Friday group, owned outright by the Lucky Friday Silver-Lead Mines Co. There are four patented claims, Good Friday, Lucky Friday, Northern Light, and Lucky Friday Fraction No. 2 (Mineral Survey No. 3028), and two unpatented claims, Hunter and Creek. In addition, Lucky Friday owns an undivided one-half interest in the Hunter Creek property. which adjoins the Lucky Friday group on the north: a 90 pct interest in the mineral rights in the Jutila Ranch (160A), which adjoins the Lucky Friday group on the east; and a 60 pct interest in the Lucky Friday Extension claim group, which adjoins the Lucky Friday group on the west. The company also has a long-term mining lease on the Hunter Ranch, which adjoins the Lucky Friday group on the west. The claims of the Lucky Friday group were located between 1899 and 1906. The Lucky Friday Mines Co. was organized in 1906 and did considerable exploration work by surface trenching and shallow underground workings, only to see the property sold by the Shoshone county sheriff to satisfy labor claims totaling $2000 in 1912. Another firm, Lucky Friday Mining Co., bought the claims in 1914 and spent 12 years driving what is now known as the tunnel level crosscut. This tunnel intersected a vein previously exposed in a higher tunnel, but it was only a few inches wide. The vein was followed a short distance westerly but was so unpromising that the work was discontinued in favor of extending the main crosscut tunnel several hundred feet north. No ore was found and all work was discontinued. The property was held in such low esteem by the firm that it let taxes amounting to less than $15 a year go delinquent for nine years. Then the property lay idle for two more years until in 1938 John Sekulic, a Mullan service station operator, took a lease, with a $15,000 purchase option, on the advice of an old miner who had worked in the mine. Sekulic re-opened the tunnel level crosscut and explored the vein with an easterly drift for about 200 ft. The vein was too narrow to be of commercial value but was believed interesting enough to warrant further exploration at depth. Lacking funds to explore the vein at depth, Sekulic tried to get the district's larger operating companies to take over his lease and option. They were not interested because of the lean tunnel level showing and the fact that the property lay between the White Ledge fault on the north and Osburn fault on the south, an area which geologists always considered unworthy of exploration. Sekulic then organized the present company and assigned his lease and option to it for stock. This was in 1939. Enough stock was sold locally to finance sinking of a shaft 100 ft from the tunnel level east drift. The vein at this additional depth still was not commercial but showed some improvement. THIS paper is a continuation of two earlier papers, l, 2 and presents new data on the grindability of various ores and other materials-the results of several years of intermittent research work on the nature of grinding and interpretation of test results. It is divided into five parts: 1. The tabulated results of several hundred grindability tests on a wide variety of ores. 2. A method of correcting screen analyses and calculating from them the surface and other properties. 3. A description of a new method of measuring the "surface energy" of an ore by pendulum impact tests. 4. Test results. 5. A general discussion of the test results and their application to grinding problems. 1. GRINDABILITY OF VARIOUS ORES This part is a continuation of the paper listed as reference No. 1. The method of testing is described in detail in that paper. The sample to be tested is crushed to all through 6 mesh in rolls set at x6-in. opening in closed circuit with a screen. Of this sample 700 C.C. is ground dry in a laboratory ball mill under constant conditions of mill speed and ball charge in closed circuit with a screen of the desired size at 250 per cent circulating load. The mill is cylindrical, 12 by 12 in., and rotates at 70 r.p.m. It contains a charge of 285 iron balls weighing 20,125 grams and ranging from 1 ½ to ¾ in. in diameter. Each test is continued for a sufficient number of periods to establish equilibrium at 250 per cent circulating load, or until the composition of the circulating load is constant for successive periods. Tests are conducted at the mesh size to which the ore is to be ground in practice, and the results are expressed as the net production in grams of screen undersize per revolution of the mill.
