THE Maintenance Committee of the Coal Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is presenting as a part of this report the second of a series of maintenance cost comparisons. The committee's purpose is to assemble maintenance costs on all equipment connected with mechanical operations at the face of coal mining and to arrange these costs by districts so that comparisons can be made between districts and within districts. The committee, this year, sent 35 questionnaires to representative coal companies who either reported last year or had advised specifically of the inability to report to last year's questionnaire primarily because of limited time. The response to the questionnaire this year was not as good as last year, only 20 of the 35 selected companies returning a completed questionnaire. This year's data has been .compiled and combined with last year's data to present a comparison of the 1945 and 1946 costs of loading machines, shortwall cutting machines, universal cutting machines, service locomotives, shuttle cars, and mine cars. The same tabulation by districts is used as was used for 1945. As was indicated by last year's report there is considerable variation in the maintenance cost of mining machinery in the various coal mining districts and due to this high variability it was not felt practical to attempt to Arrive at weighted averages. Consequently, all average figures used in this report are straight averages. An analysis was made of companies reporting both this year and last year in an attempt to determine the trend in maintenance costs for different classes of equipment. Ten representative companies are used in this computation. Table I shows the average cost for 1945 and 1946. It is felt that the negative trend in the maintenance cost of universal cutting machines probably represents the effect of the purchase of a relatively large number o new machines in 1946 with little maintenance cost appearing during the first yeas of operation. The grand total figure indicates an upward trend amounting to plus 18.7 pct. However, this figure is viewer with some suspicion because of the effect of the universal cutters decreasing maintenance cost and it is concluded that direct application of percentage increase should be made to types of equipment. THE axial orientations of columnar crystals in unidirectionally solidified ingots of zone-refined zinc and tin have been examined using the techniques recently described by us.' Both metals had an initial purity of 99.999+ pct before zone refining and satisfied all qualitative guides for very high purity after zone refining. Fig. 1 presents the orientations of the columnar crystals for tin and zinc, respectively. For tin, there is a preference for grains growing in the [I101 direction, i.e., the dendrite direction.' For zinc, a weak preference for the [0001] direction is seen (a random population in the unit triangle would give equal density on either side of the 60-deg circle centered on [0001]).' There was no apparent evidence for dendritic growth in either metal. These results, and those previously reported,' confirm the recent investigation by Hellawell and Herbert of casting textures observed for zone-refined lead, zinc, and tin.4 The preferred casting orientations for these metals in both the impure and zone-refined states are given in Table I. In the experiments on zone-refined lead,' it was shown that two separate textures existed: a preferred (111) nucleation texture existed at the chill surface and a preferred (111) texture developed during solidification. Either effect is sufficient to produce the result recorded in Table I. Similarly the results recorded for tin and zinc may be attributable to either a preferred nucleation or a preferred growth phenomenon and additional experiments are required to separate these two possible explanations. Hellawell and Herbert' attribute their results to a preferred growth process and account for it on the basis of a "layer-growth" model proposed much earlier by one of the present authors.5 An equally satisfactory growth model would be that based upon anisotropic surface energies. However, both of these growth models would indicate that the preferred growth direction for very pure metals should be normal to the plane of closest packing in the metal. This is consistent for zinc but, contrary to the conclusion of Hellawell and Herbert, it is not consistent for tin since here the (100) is expected to exhibit a greater density of packing than the (110). Although tin is expected to exhibit an anisotropy of thermal conductivity, we would expect the thermal conductivity to be the same in the [1101 as the [l00]

Notable among these are the joint meeting of the Society of Economic Geologists and the Geological Society of America at El Paso, November 1949, at which the principal thesis was concerned with low rank carbonaceous fuel deposits, especially of western United States. Among the papers given which are already available were those presented by Barghoorn,'" Parry? Roe? and Parks."' At the annual meeting of the Botanical Society of America in New York, December 1949, a joint meeting of the Paleobotanical and Microbiological Sections was held for which a symposium on Microbiology in Relation to the Geologic Accumulation of Organic Complexes was organized. Publication of the six papers presented by Ralph G. H. Siu, Elso S. Barghoorn, Irving Breger, Claude E. ZoBell, James M. Schopf, and A. C. Thayson is anticipated. At the regular meetings of the Paleobotanical Section at the same time, several other papers of interest reported on coal ball studies, partial coalification of petrified wood, and floras. In Chicago, April 1950, a symposium on Applied Paleobotany was held by the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists in conjunction with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. The five papers presented at this meeting dealt with the use of Paleozoic plant microfossils for stratigraphic work, J. M. Schopf, Devonian-Missis-sippian fossils of the black shales, Aureal T. Cross, Mesozoic plants of stratigraphic value, Th. Just, plant microfossils of the Tertiary, L. R. Wilson, and studies of the Brandon lignite, Elso S. Barghoorn. Early publication of these in the Journal of Paleontology is expected. The Nova Scotia Research Foundation and the Nova Scotia Dept. of Mines sponsored an excellent 3-day conference in June 1950, which dealt with several aspects of coal geology. Papers on coal classification, P. A. Hacquenbard, structure and sedimentation problems in Nova Scotia, T. B. Haites, new techniques of thermal analysis, W. L. White-head, geochemical investigations of Nova Scotia coals, Irving Breger, the role of fossil plant spores in coal correlation and the stratigraphy of the coal-bearing strata of the Appalachian Region, Aureal T. Cross, were given. Some discussions of these papers by those in attendance were recorded, and the entire proceedings is being prepared for publication. In September 1950, an unusual 3-day field conference was held by the Ohio and West Virginia Geological Surveys under the sponsorship of the Coal Geology Committee. This study of the stratigraphy, sedimentation, and nomenclature of the Upper Pennsylvanian and Permian coal-bearing strata of southeastern Ohio, southwestern Pennsylvania, and northern West Virginia was augmented by two discussions on associated rocks (clays and shales) and stratigraphic nomenclature at Wheeling and Morgantown, West Va. An extensive guidebook was prepared, and transcriptions of the Morgantown meeting were made. As a follow-up of the September field conference, a round-table discussion was held on this general topic at a special open meeting of the Coal Research Committee in conjunction with the November meeting of the Geological Society in Washington. This paper .reviews some of the key developments which have been made in the synthesis of the III-V compound semiconductors and the associated progress in obtaining high-quality material for device development. The history of the investigation of the semi-conducting properties of these materials has indicated the need for synthesis techniques capable of producing rnaterial of high chemical purity and physical perfection. The progress in the area is described, and the present status of quality of several compounds is discussed. In addition, recent studies of localized epitaxial deposition of GaAs into semi-insulating GaAs substvates for the development of arrays of devices ave reviewed. In conclusion, some important areas for future research and developrnent are discussed. INTEREST in III-V compounds as semiconductors dates back to the period 1950 to 1952, when Goryunova, Ioffe, and, in particular, Welker determined that 111-V compounds were structural analogs of the group IV elements carbon, silicon, germanium, and tin and that they were also semiconductors.'-3 Since that time interest in the properties of these materials has ex- panded rapidly. During 1953 and 1954, the first reports of rectification, photoconductivity, and optical absorption in these materials came from several investigators. In 1955, recombination radiation from samples of GaAs, InP, and GaSb was reported by ~raunstein .' This radiation was produced by injected minority carriers from point and large-area contacts. From 1955 to 1960, efforts increased on preparing large, pure specimens of these materials for the study of basic physical phenomena and device exploration. By 1960, materials preparation and the understanding of the physics of some of the materials had advanced to where some very interesting and potentially useful phenomena came under study. The first observation of electric-field-induced changes in the optical absorption edge (Franz -Keldysh effect) of 111-V compounds was reported for GaAs by Moss in 1961.' In 1962 the study of recombination radiation advanced rapidly. Keyes and Quist6 and Pankove and Berkey-heiser7 reported high radiative efficientices obtained from recombination, and then the first injection electroluminescent lasers in GaAs were announced by Hall ef al.,' by Nathan et al.,O and by Quist ef al.,'O and in Ga(As, P) alloys by Holonyak and Bevacqua." G. R. DELAMATER,* Steelton, Pa. (written discussion t)..-Under the heading, "Preparation of Coal," Mr. Campbell discusses the ad-visability of sizing the coal for the jigs. While I fully realize that conditions alter cases, my method at all times is to do everything possible to avoid sizing. It would be unwise for anyone to say that greater ash and sulfur reduction is impossible by sizing. The thing that can be questioned is, will the greater reduction be sufficient to counterbalance the greater cost? The same thing is true of the proper size of crushing for each individual proposition. In past years many washeries have been built and equipped for wash-ing two or more sizes, but I know of few instances where these plants were operated more than a year before sizing was abandoned. Perhaps in some of these cases this was clue to lack of sufficient development of such scheme of operation; yet I have found that most men engaged in this work, including myself, started into the work with a pretty well-fixed idea that sizing would be beneficial. But trials and tests showed that the mixed size washing is necessary for coals requiring crushing to 1 in. or less. Coal is of low value, compared with other minerals segregated by washing or concentration, for which reason simplicity must be the watchword: simplicity in the machine used to attain the separations of impurities from the coal, in the accessory plant equipment, and in its arrangement.

In a recent paper' I took exception to the opening paragraph of Mr. Hill's paper, in which he says:— " In endeavoring to interpret the geological occurrence of oil, the geologist is confronted by the fact that science has not yet solved the problem of its origin, which lies at the root of the subject.... For the present we must consider oil as a material in the rocks, the origin of which is still unexplained." I take this occasion to repeat my objection to the above statement, as well as to the similar statement of Mr. C. W. Hayes and William Kennedy in their recent bulletin2 on the same oilfields :—" The origin of petroleum is one of the most obscure problems by which geologists are confronted." I do not hesitate to say that these statements, which claim we know so little to-day of the origin of petroleum, are not warranted in the present state of geological science, and that, on the contrary, geology can to-day most clearly prove the origin of oil to be inorganic and the result of solfataric volcanic emanations. It has been so long assumed that oil or bitumen is due to the decomposition of the organic remains of the sedimentary rocks, that the words organic and bituminous are used synonymously and, accordingly, without attempt at explanation, the origin of oil is in every case ascribed to some bituminous-shale horizon, more or less full of organic matter. A stability criterion for a lamellar eutectic interface was derived previously1 assuming that the wavelength, A,. of the perturbation which grows most rapidly is much larger than the lamellar spacing. A. This assumption was required to permit averaging of both the interface temperature and composition over the complicated geometry of a lamellae. If this assumption is invalid, as has been suggested.2,3 then the problem becomes too complicated to solve completely. The first of these analyses1 did not calculate the wavelength. A,. of the initially unstable perturbation. whereas the more recent analysis.' which led to a contradiction of this assumption. did not include one of the key factors for determining this wavelength. To rigorously determine the wavelength, the effect of the curvature of the perturbed interface (not considered by either of the above treatments) must be included. By omitting this term, one would be led to an incorrect conclusion regarding the magnitude of A,. but to an accurate criterion for stability as evidenced by the excellent agreement with experimental observations.' In the case of single-phase alloys. the critical wavelength. A,. for instability can be calculated from the Mullins and Sekerka4 (M.S.) analysis which includes the effects of capillarity. In the following discussion, the M.S. analysis is applied to lamellar eutectics and the critical wavelengths calculated for reasonable growth conditions in Pb-Sn eutectic alloys. In order to apply the M.S. analysis to eutectics. one may substitute i) the effective liquidus slope.1 m*. for the single-phase liquidus slope and ii) the ratio of the bulk alloy composition. An improved method of logging formation density has been developed in which the formation is bombarded with a collimuted beam of gamma rays. By means of a scintillation detector and pulse height discriminator, the gamma-ray energy band is accepted and recorded which corresponds to deepest penetration into the formation. Laboratory tests on a field tool revealed no borehole diameter effect for smooth holes and no effect of formation chemistry, except insofar as chemistry affects density. In extensive field tests, the density log has exhibited satisfactory agree-ment with core measurements and has correlated accurately with other logs. INTRODUCTION This paper describes an improved method of logging formation density by means of back-scattered gamma rays to penetrate the formation together with energy discrimination to select only that energy (or frequency) range corresponding to deepest penetration into the forma- tion. This method of density logging was developed at the La Habra laboratory of California Research Corp.* Field instruments have been built and tested by McCullough Tool Co. and commercial service has begun in some areas. All of the data discussed here were obtained for the original field tool. The density log can be a valuable adjunct to existing logs because of its use in determining porosity quantitatively. It is useful also in connection with seismic and gravity surveys where formation density information is of interest. PHYSICAL PRINCIPLES The intensity, I, of a beam of gamma rays after traversing a distance, x, in an absorbing medium is given by I = loe -ax where I, is the intensity of the beam entering the medium and a the attenuation constant or macroscopic cross section of the medium for gamma-ray absorption. The macroscopic cross section depends on the number and types of atoms per unit volume and the gamma-ray energy. In brief, it is the sum of the atomic cross sections of all atoms per cubic centimeter. The density of the material is the sum of the masses of all atoms per cubic centimeter. Thus, the density and the macroscopic cross section for gam-ma-ray absorption vary in propor- tion to the number of atoms per cubic centimeter. The density of the material increases, of course, if the atomic masses increase without a change in the number of atoms per cubic centimeter. When the density increases in this latter way, the macroscopic cross section increases also, but disproportionately. This results from the fact that part of the gamma-ray absorption arises from the photoelectric effect and the pair-production effect**, which are proportional to the sixth and to the second power, respectively, of the atomic number of the absorber. The remainder of the absorption results from the Compton effect, and is directly proportional to the atomic number. The gamma rays that undergo Compton scattering are not immediately absorbed. Since these rays are scattered in all directions, a fraction will emerge from the face of the medium at which they entered. If a gamma-ray shield is placed between the source and detector, most gamma rays reaching the detector will be those scattered out of the medium. The intensity will depend on absorption and scattering in the medium, and so indicates the density of the medium. For gamma rays for which Compton scattering prevails, the intensity

Northwest frontier is here defined as Alaska, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and northern British Columbia. The mineral potential of this area is great and will unfold in the decade ahead but now the largest single producer is the Pine Point lead-zinc mine in the NWT about 1200 km north of Edmonton, Alta., close to the south shore of Great Slave Lake. The mill, initially designed for 4540 mtpd, was expanded to 7250 mtpd in 1969. This operation is described in detail in Mining and Concentrating of Lead and Zinc, Vol.1, Chapt. 17, SME/AIME in the article by W. H. R. Gibney.

E. W. Parker, Washington, D. C.: In connection with Mr. Blauvelt's paper, a brief sketch of the development of by-product coke-making in the United States may prove of interest. The first radical departure from the prevalent beehive oven to the by-product retort oven was inaugurated in 1891 by the Solvay Process Company, at Syracuse, N. Y. In that year was begun the construction of 12 Semet-Solvay ovens, which were completed in 1893. During 1893 these ovens produced 12,850 tons of coke, an average.of a little over 1000 tons each. In the following year the production amounted to 16,500 tons, not quite 1400 tons per oven. These 12 ovens were in reality an experiment, the success of which was attested by the addition to the same plant of 13 more ovens, begun in 1895 and completed in 1896. They were followed by the construction in 1896 of 25 ovens of the same type at Sharon, Pa., and 50 more at Dunbar, Pa. These 100 ovens represented the total number of Semet-Solvay ovens completed and in operation up to the close of 1897. The construction of 180 more, however—120 at Ensley, Ala., and 60 at Benwood, near Wheeling, W. Va.—was begun in 1897. The plant for the latter is laid out for double the number stated. The 60 ovens begun in 1897 have now been completed. An initial plant of Otto-Hoffman ovens was built at Johnstown, Pa., in 1895, and began making coke in 1896. One hundred and twenty additional ovens of this type were begun in 1896 and completed in 1897 at Glassport, near McKeesport, Pa. During the present year 100 Otto-Hoffman ovens are being added to the plant at Johnstown, and 400 of the same type are in course of construction at Everett, near Boston, Mass. The plant at the latter place is laid out for a total of 1200 ovens.

The Rainbow Lode is situated at Walkerville, in the Summit Valley mining district, Silver Bow County, Montana Territory, about one mile from Butte City. It was so named ill 1876 by Mr. J. E. Clayton, in recognition of the broadly-sweeping curve of the outcrop across the rounded surface of the eastern slope of a granitic mountain, at an elevation of about 6000 feet above the sea-level. It is on the western side of the range which divides the waters of the Missouri from those of the Columbia. History.—The history of the district is an instructive one. The water-courses and flanks of the hills were worked for years for placer gold. Millions of dollars' worth of low-grade gold have been washed out of the surface gravels below the veins of the district. Missoula Gulch and Silver Bow creek, just below Butte, are noted for their rich placers, and they continue to yield largely, producing within narrow limits from $50,000 to $100,000 dollars' worth of golddust yearly. It is ragged vein-gold, and evidently is near its parent source. It is no doubt derived from the disintegration of the veins of the district, and this conclusion was soon forced upon the miners. The veins which were seen outcropping boldly upon the slopes above them were located, and prospecting commenced. These outcrops were found heavily stained and blackened with oxide of manganese, and were porous and honey-combed in places, showing that the quartz was formerly filled with pyritous ores, and that these ores had decomposed and dissolved away, leaving, however, portions of the precious metal behind, especially at and near the surface of the ground. Assays of the croppings gave variable and often contradictory results; but the fact. that these were the outcrops of lodes bearing gold and silver in depth was patent to any experienced observer of mineral veins. The lodes of the district were first brought prominently to notice by Mr. Clayton in 1876, and in October of that year the Alice mine, upon the central portion of the lode, was opened by Mr. Marcus Daly, now so well known as the superintendent of the Anaconda Copper mine, upon another extremely interesting lode, in the same region.

AFTER the phenomenal development of the new mine, the United Eastern Mining Co., with Mr. Frank A. Keith as President, decided to install a reduction plant. The character of the ore, closely resembling the product of other mines in the district, did not offer any particular metallurgical problems, since these neighboring mines had been operating milling plants very successfully for several years. Thus, with the general metallurgical treatment fairly well-defined, the matter of next importance was to design and construct a plant as economically as possible, that would give the best results obtainable. The ore consists of a mixture of calcite and quartz in about equal quantities with some decomposed andesite, while the average value of mill heads were calculated to be $20 plus in gold, no silver being present. The tonnage to be treated at ,the start was fixed at 200 tons, but, in view of the favorable condition of the mine, it was considered advisable to arrange facilities, for increasing the capacity to 400 tons. . While it is best in some cases to adopt a distinct independent unit system where future enlargement is contemplated, in this instance the plans worked out differently. Summarized, the treatment adopted consists of coarse crushing, coarse grinding, fine grinding and cyanidation. For coarse crushing the selection of the No. 6 size gyratory crusher was governed not so much by its capacity as by the size of the feed openings to properly receive the run-of-mine material, which was too coarse for a No. 5 crusher. To accomplish the coarse grinding to. best advantage, a careful comparison was made between the modern steel ball mill-the last word in crushing and grinding-and one of its older, and, at that time better-established, competitors, the rolls.' The following conclusion was reached: While it is possible that for the sized plant under consideration the cost of operating rolls might be a little cheaper, it is preferable to use ball mills because a simpler arrangement is possible, and1 because. the handling of, ball mills is preferred by the operator.

THE Tralee preparation plant, owned and operated by the Semet-Solvay division of Allied Chemical and Dye Corp., is located on the Virginian rail- way, near Mullens, Wyoming County, W. Va., and the mine, which is in the Winding Gulf district, produces coal exclusively from Pocahontas No. 3 seam. The property, comprising 4900 acres, is leased from the Pocahontas Land Corp. Prior to 1930 four separate mines were operated in this tract, some having been started about 1916.

President Raymond called the meeting to order, and introduced Mr. Abram S. Hewitt, who welcomed the Institute to New York. President Raymond, in behalf of the Institute, replied. The President then read the following report of the Council for the past year. The Council respectfully report that the American Institute of Mining Engineers has held four meetings-at Wilkes-Barre, Bethlehem, Troy, and Philadelphia, respectively-all of which have been well attended, and socially and professionally most successful. The proceedings of these meetings having been published in the Engineering and Mining Journal, and sent to all members and associates, are sufficiently well known. Forty-four papers, by twenty-six authors, have been read. These papers embrace s wide range of subjects, and prove the practical character of the proceedings of the Institute. The finances are in a satisfactory condition. By the report of the Treasurer it appears that $1290.10 have been received, $519.90 expended, and that $770.20 now remains in the treasury exclusive of fees for 1872. This fund, it is hoped, will be so increased by voluntary subscriptions as to enable us before long to issue s volume of our most important transactions in a permanent form. The Council has made a favorable arrangement with the Scientific Publishing Company, publishing the Engineering and Mining Journal, by which that journal became the organ of the Institute for the first publication of the proceedings, papers, and notices to members. This arrangement it is proposed to continue through the present year unless the Institute shall otherwise direct. It is not intended to supersede the publication of an annual or occasional volume, but to maintain an interest in the Institute, and to serve the convenience of members while our funds do not permit s more ambitious publication.

Cooperation will be the keynote of the meeting of the Institute that will be held in New York on February 17 to 20. Arrangements are being made for two joint sessions with the Canadian Mining Institute, on the same day, which therefore will be known as Canadian Mining Institute Day. On the afternoon of Wednesday, February 19, there will be a joint session with the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. Besides, we will receive six or eight papers through the National Research Council, four of which will be presented at the National Research Council Session. In March, at the next meeting, of the Canadian Mining Institute, there will be an American Institute of Mining Engineers Day. The plan is to have the same subjects discussed at both meetings, but by different speakers. One speaker on each subject will represent the Canadian Mining Institute, and one speaker the American Institute of Mining Engineers. The Canadians and the Americans who will speak in Canada are expected to attend the discussion in New York. In addition the discussion at the New York meeting will be sent to Canada in printed form, so that the Canadian discussion will be a continuation of the former. At the joint session with the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, there will -be presented six very important papers on the subject of Electric Welding, one by the Chairman of the Electric Welding Research Committee of the National Research Council, another by the Chairman of the Metallurgical Sub-committee of that same Committee, and a third by Comfort A. Adams, President of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and Chairman of the Welding Committee of the Emergency Fleet Corporation. We will receive six or eight papers through the National Research Council. These papers are results of recent investigations and represent the last word in their respective subjects. The excursion on Thursday, February 20, will be to Newark Bay to visit the Federal Shipyard where the first, electric-welded ship is being built. Philip W. Henry is chairman of the excursion committee of arrangements.
