THE province of Saskatchewan, situated in the center of the Great Plains region of Canada, has, like most prairie areas, an essentially agricultural economy. Most of its population of about 860,000 is located in the southern half of the province in the farming and ranching areas. To the north of the prairie is a broad forested belt supporting a considerable timbering industry, and the northern one third of the province is glaciated pre-Cambrian rock formation. This latter area is relatively barren of vegetation, but the presence within it of a considerable variety of radioactive, noble and base metals, and industrial minerals has been shown by prospecting in recent years.' Glacial Geology The Keewatin ice sheet, considered to have accumulated in the country to the west of Hudson Bay in Pleistocene time, covered at its maximum advancement almost all of Saskatchewan and extended south of the international boundary. Only in the Cypress Hills in the southwest and around Wood Mountain in the south central portion of the province did the preglacial formations escape the action for this glacial period. The bedrock of the plains and forest areas therefore is overlain by moraines and modified glacial drift, which vary in thickness from a few feet to 400 or 500 ft.' Glacial action in the pre-Cambrian area of the province was largely erosional, most of the more recent formations and some of the pre-Cambrian rock being transported out of the area to the south and west. It has been estimated that about 13 pct of this area is composed of lakes and rivers not too adaptable to rail or water transportation, so that until the use of aviation for exploration purposes became general, development of the area was slow. To the south, the heavy mantle of glacial drift has to some extent deterred the discovery of industrial minerals in the bedrock underlying the forest and prairie regions3 At the same time, this drift contains numerous deposits of those most elementary and necessary industrial minerals, sand and gravel. Sedimentary Basin The major feature of the sedimentary deposits underlying the plains regions is the basinal structure known as the Moose Jaw syncline, which runs from the southeast corner of the province in a northwesterly direction. To the west of this syncline the formations curve upward, then have been faulted and further upthrust to appear at the surface in the foothills of the Rockies in Alberta; to the east and north they curve upward into Manitoba and northern Saskatchewan, but the surface contacts are covered mostly with glacial drift.238 The axis of the syncline dips to the southeast, so that there is also an upward trend of the formations along the axis to the northwest. In illustration of the regional structure underlying the province, the pre-Cambrian basement has been logged in drillholes at the following depths in several locations: Ogema (south central), 9390 ft; Gronlid (northeast), 2599 ft; Vera (northwest), 4422 ft; Big River (north northwest), 2348 ft. Fig. 1 indicates the general surface geology of the province, ignoring such glacial overburden as may overlie many of the bedrock formations. Also indicated is the approximate location of the axis of the Moose Jaw syncline.' Industrial Minerals Clays: The province is fortunate in possessing a widespread distribution of clays of ceramic value, ranging from those used for heavy structural products to the high grade pottery and china clays. Shales suitable for brick and tile production are found in the Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary formations across the south of the province where the glacial drift is thin or nonexistent. Many deposits of glacial lake clays suitable for such wares are found scattered over the rest of the province south of the pre-Cambrian area. The Whitemud formation of the Upper Cretaceous is a narrow sedimentary band of secondary clays found intermittently at points across the south of the province where glacial action did not disturb or remove them.' In the southwest corner of the province, around Eastend in the Frenchman River valley, the refractory clays of this formation are contaminated somewhat with iron compounds or other alteration products of basaltic rocks. This eliminates the use of those clays in true whitewares, as they fire to creamy buff shades at the lower temperatures and to a blue-specked grey at cone 8 to 12, (2280°F to 2390°F), the range commonly used in firing whiteware. However, for use in the production of colored artware, caneware, stoneware or crockery, and sewerpipe, this type of clay makes an excellent body that requires little or no addition of flint, feldspar, or other fluxing materials such as are required in the higher class of ware.' It is not a grade of clay that can be shipped great distances to the manufacturing centers, but a market for considerable tonnages has developed at nearby Medicine Hat, where cheap natural gas is available for the firing of the ware. Farther east in the south central portion of the province, the clays of the Whitemud formation are generally more refractory and white burning. The formation is divided into three zones, consisting of white clays, brown shale, and white sandy clays.

Alluvial gold was first discovered in Guiana in 1852, in the sands of the Arataye river, by Paulino, a Braziliaii convict. During the following years, gold was found also in the rivers Orapu, CirubQ, etc. In 1873 the famous placers of the Sinnamary system were opened: Saint-Elie, Dieu-Merci, Adieu-Vat, and Couriege. This group of mines has produced nearly $10,000,000, according to official records, not including the gold that escaped the taxes. The discoverer was a mulatto named Vitalo. Except in a few rich spots, the gold was rather evenly distributed along the creeks. In one instance, gold was found in the red dirt from the slope of a hill, which, after transport to the creek, gave an amount of 150 kilograms. The placers of the Mana system, Enfin, Elysee, Pas-Trop-Tot, date from 1878, and their production has been about %g5,000,000. In 1888, the Awa placers, along the boundary bet.ween the French and Dutch Guianas, on the Maroni and its tributaries, were discovered. They have yielded $12,000,000. The only industrial company, the Dutch Guiana Freiich Minillg Co., produced in 15 years about 2,500 kg. of gold, worth $1,500,000. From 1893 dates the famous Carsewene discovery, in territory then in dispute between France and Brazil. A settlement was made recently in favor of Brazil, by arbitration of the Switzerland State Council. Carsewene is said to have produced about $18,000,000 in six years (1894-1900), but not even one-fourth of tho production went through French Quiana and

Tars paper reviews the industrial trends and changes in educational concepts that have led to the development of the modern petroleum engineering curriculum. A trend toward emphasis on engineering fundamentals is noted. While most universities are committed to the traditional four-year engineering program, it is agreed that more than four years is necessary for academic preparation of the petroleum engineer in all phases of his profession. The author proposes a coordinated program of undergraduate and graduate training that will permit of adherence to the general pattern of the present four-year engineering course, with provision for extension of the program into specialized graduate courses of professional character. In the latter, emphasis may vary with the interests and objectives of the individual student. A specific undergraduate curriculum is proposed in which upward of 80 per cent of the available time is devoted to engineering fundamentals. A broad survey of the professional field is afforded in courses grouped in the third and fourth undergraduate years, but detailed treatment of the professional aspects of petroleum engineering is reserved for the graduate program. INTRODUCTION Of necessity, engineering curricula must ever be changing to reflect the new techniques, the changing concepts that are presented as the engineering industries develop and unfold. Particularly is this true of the younger engineering curricula representing comparatively new and rapidly changing industries such as the petroleum industry. Institutions that planned their petroleum engineering curricula a decade or two ago now find that the petroleum industry has become vastly more technical in its requirements. En¬tirely new methods and techniques have come into vogue and must be given place in the curriculum, and some of these are of a character that demands changing emphasis in the fundamental preparatory subjects. College and university faculties cannot complacently assume that curricula in this field that were considered appropriate 10 or 20 years ago still reflect the needs of the industry that they are designed to serve. If they do, their graduates will be poorly equipped to meet the requirements imposed upon them by a rapidly changing industry. Perhaps it is not too much to expect academic authorities to anticipate the trends of industry and equip their graduates with what they will need to attain leadership 10 or 20 years after graduation. Whether or not this desirable objective is possible, there is no excuse for allowing curricula to fall behind the current needs of industry. DURATION OF CURRICULUM The majority of our engineering schools and colleges still adhere to the four-year curricula and there appears to be a definite sentiment among many engineers engaged in industry that work should be so planned that the engineering student may secure the essential academic preparation for his profession in a terminal four-year program. Sodium sulfate is an important industrial chemical, being one of perhaps a dozen or so chemical commodities produced and consumed in the United States in quantities exceeding 1 Mt/a. In recent years approximately half that production has come from natural sources, whereas 27 years ago only 25% was derived from these sources. Table 1 illustrates the history of production of natural sodium sulfate in the United States. Production of natural sodium sulfate from various types of deposits is the main source of this chemical in Canada and Mexico, and probably in Argentina, Chile, Spain, and the USSR. Mineralogy and Physical Properties Sodium sulfate is widespread in occurrence and is a common constituent of many mineral waters, as well as seawater. Atmospheric precipitation contains sulfate; it is one of the major dissolved constituents of rain and snow (Davis and DeWiest, 1966). Many of the saline lakes throughout the world contain varying amounts of sodium sulfate. Because sodium is usually the dominant cation, some workers make an anionic distinction, referring to lakes containing predominately sulfate as bitter lakes and those containing predominately carbonate as alkali, or soda lakes (Bateman, 1950). Sodium sulfate in its natural form is found as the hydrous salt mirabilite (commonly called Glauber's salt), and as thenardite, the anhydrous variety. The largest quantities occur in the form of mirabilite. Sodium sulfate is found in varying degrees of purity, from theoretically pure efflorescent crystals of mirabilite to combinations and admixtures of other salts and impurities. It is a common constituent of some brines; from this source much is extracted commercially. [ ]

Phase diagrams for the Ti-W and Ti-Ta systems were determined. The Ti-W system is characterized by a wide, two-phase region of ß plus tungsten which is derived from a peritectic reaction between the liquid and tungsten solid solutions. The ß field terminates in a eutectoid reaction between a titanium and tungsten terminal solid solution. Tantalum and ß titanium form a complete series of solid solutions. Other features of this system are the extensive a-ß field at low temperatures and an appreciable solubility of tantalum in a titanium. BOTH tungsten and tantalum were first thought to form ß-isomorphous systems with titanium as a result of early work' using powder-metallurgical techniques. Later work2 on arc-melted Ti-Ta alloys, made using a commercial titanium base, showed that, in the range of 0 to 10 pct, tantalum was soluble in ß titanium and that the a solubility extended to between 2 and 5 pct Ta at 790 °C. The present investigation covered the entire alloy range in both systems and was chiefly concerned with high-purity alloys at the titanium-rich end. The constitution of titanium-rich alloys made with a commercial titanium base was reported by Holla-day, Kura, and Jackson.3, 4 As will be shown in detail later, the early prediction of a isomorphism was true for the case of the Ti-Ta system, but not for the Ti-W system. The results of this investigation will be presented first. The experimental methods used are described in the Appendix. Ti-W System The entire Ti-W phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1. Details of the titanium-rich side are shown in Fig. 2. The chief features of the system are a ß eutectoid and a high-temperature peritectic between liquid and tungsten solid solution. Melting Range: Examination of cast structures of low and medium-tungsten-content ingots showed cored ß phase as the primary constituent. Fig. 3a illustrates a typical cast structure for alloys in the range of 20 to 30 pct W. From 30 to 72 pct W, coring was very severe. Alloys containing 72 through 88 pct W, however, showed definite evidence of a peritectic reaction between the liquid and a terminal solid solution of titanium in tungsten. Fig. 3b shows the cast structure for an 80 pct W alloy. A 95 pct W alloy, shown in Fig. 4, consisted primarily of primary tungsten solid solution plus a small quantity of ß probably rejected during cooling. Incipient-melting experiments located the peritectic temperature between 1850" and 1900°C and indicated that the reacting phases are liquid containing about 25 pct W and tungsten terminal solid solution containing about 8 pct Ti. THE copper-silver system presents several points of special interest in the study of segregate structures. The system is simple eutectic, with limited solid solutions terminal with the pure component metals. The extent of solid solubility decreases with decreasing temperature for both the copper-rich and the silver-rich alloys, thus offering a possi-bility for the formation of Widmanstätten figures and also a possibility for aging after quenching. In contrast to the structures studied previ-ously the structures in this system are unique in their; origin, for one terminal solid solution will precipitate the other, and ice versa. In most of the other systems for which crystallographic data on the precipi-tation (or transformation) process are available, either intermetallic compounds or intermediate phases partake in the decomposition process; the absence of such phases thus distinguishes this system. The lattice structures of the two solid solutions are identical in type, differing in lattice spacing by approximately 10 per cent; because of this it seems difficult if not impossible to predict on the basis of present theory either the outward form of the precipitate or the lattice orientation relationships between matrix and precipitate. IN the basic open hearth process the reaction of manganese in the bath with iron oxide in the slag attains a condition very closely approximating true equilibrium, and the distribution of manganese between slag and metal during the refining period is determined by the factors which control this equilibrium condition. For this reason a number of investigators have studied this reaction both in the laboratory and under various conditions of furnace operation. The principle reaction and its equilibrium constant are: FeO (in slag) + Mn = MnO (in slag) + Fe (liq.) [1] (MnO) .= (FeO),[%Mn] The symbols in parentheses represent activities of the two oxides in the slag which, in the simple slags consisting almost wholly of the two oxides, may be assumed equal to the respective mol fractions. The symbol (FeO)r is used to denote the total iron oxide computed as FeO; or it is the sum of the mol fraction of FeO plus twice that of Fe2O3. Early attempts to obtain laboratory data on this reaction suffered from failure to appreciate the great speed of the reaction. When slag and metal are cooled slowly together, the equilibrium shifts with temperature and the final compositions correspond to equilibrium at the freezing point rather than at bath temperature. The early work of Oberhoffer and Schenck¹ and of Tammann and Oelsen² apparently suffered from this source of error. In most of the other published laboratory investigationsa. '.' this error was not present but other uncertainties have existed, notably dependence upon optical temperature measurements and exposure to atmospheric oxidation.

JOHN MARBLE, mining engineer, coal operator, philanthropist, member of the Institute since 1879, vice-president in 1903-04, has been paid the well deserved tribute of Honorary Membership. The presentation of the diploma was made at a luncheon in New York on Feb. 13, the citation reading: "In recognition of his work as an engineer and administrator of mines and his services to mining engineering education." Within the last month Lafayette University dedicated the new John Markle Mining Engineering Building, the gift of the eminent alumnus for whom it is named. In addition, Mr. Markle has contributed a maintenance fund for the carrying out of far-reaching plans for improving the mining courses to be given at the Institution. One of his theories is that quality rather than quantity of engineering graduates is the need of the profession. John Markle was born in Hazleton, Pa., in 1858. He received his degree of M. E. at Lafayette in 1880, and married Mary Estelle Robinson in New York City in 1884. Since 1880 he has been associated continuously with the firm of G. B. Markle & Co., and its successor companies. He has also been an official of numerous other important companies, although he is now retired from active business life.

The Mining Journal Annual Review. One Sunday night last month the phone rang and it was George Schenck from Penn State. How would we like to see a big scrap operation, he wanted to know. A few days later we were on the Connecticut turnpike headed for New Haven to visit a large scrap operation, M. Schiavone and Sons. George had a large clam basket in the back which he explained was for collecting trophies. The car shredder, he said, turns out some fancy metal shapes. In fact, they have gained a certain acceptance as objets d’art among George's friends and relatives. He thinks there may be a small, but possibly lucrative secondary market for shredded cars in the art world if the idea is imaginatively promoted. On the way to New Haven we received a briefing on the scrap industry. The scrap business grew from humble beginnings. Mostly it was started by a few immigrant Jews who collected junk in hand- or horse-drawn carts. The fortunate one might even have had a truck. Before proceeding further, we hasten to point out that the word "junk" is strictly taboo among scrap people, who prefer to refer to their industry as the "secondary metals industry."

The literature on the beneficiation of serpentine asbestos ore states that the specific gravity of the rock containing fiber and the fiber itself is the same so that specific gravity cannot be used as a basis for separation. An investigation of particles of asbestos ore ranging in size from 4 mesh to 5 in. revealed that the fiber-bearing particles generally had a lower specific gravity compared to essentially barren particles. The difference in specific gravity was sufficient to make an effective gravity separation of ore particles and reject a low grade tailings product. The results of laboratory tests are described that lead to the running of pilot plant tests with 20-ton ore samples using a heavy media separator. These tests indicated that a large amount of low grade material could be rejected from the raw ore at a coarse size. Although the process used is a wet separation, it can be added to a conventional dry asbestos mill. A gravity preconcentration would allow the mining of lower grade ore, increase the life of the mine, increase the value of the feed to the fiber recovery section, and decrease maintenance costs by removal of low grade tailings early in the flowsheet.

In crowding the recent mass of work on the physics of cast-iron into the compass of a short review, I cannot do better than to follow the lines of Mr. W. R. Webster's suggestion, made at the Florida meeting of the Institute, March, 1895.' The classification of the properties of the metal, and the influences to which it is subjected during the various processes it undergoes, is quite complete; and as Mr. Webster gives it again in full in another paper at the present meeting, a simple reference to it now will be sufficient. I. Correspondence Between Chemical Composition, and Melting-Point, Fluidity, Shrinkage, Fracture,Chill, Micro-Structure, and Other Physical Properties. Melting-Point.—The melting-point of cast-iron had long been a subject of controversy among foundrymen. They knew that a hard iron melted faster than a soft one, but this effect was occasionally disputed, and the reasons given were unsatisfactory; but could not be well controverted. It was my good fortune to take the actual melting-temperatures of some 70 pig-irons and castings; the Le Chatelier pyrometer, suitably protected, being introduced into the interior, and the iron melted off in a specially-constructed cupola. B. R. Coil (Electrical Installations at the Miami Mine are Cheaper with Flexible Cable, P. 356) was born in Higginsville, Mo., and attended McKinley High School and Missouri School of Mines. He received a B.S. in mining engineering. Mr. Coil has worked for the Braden Copper Co., Rancagua, Chile as junior engineer and foreman. He was employed by Miami Copper Co. as a jigger boss, shift boss, development engineer and mine foreman. He worked as mine superintendent and general superintendent of the Castle Dome Copper Company, Inc. Mr. Coil may be reached at Box 100, Miami, Ariz. He is an AIME Member. Mr. C. R. Ross was co-author with Mr. Coil in the preparation of this paper. His paper covers the present installation of electrical equipment in block caving stopes along with background data. In this paper he has given one solution to wiring problems in heavy stopes.

Though much has been written during the past several years about the Russian success in using hydraulic jets for coal mining, little or none of the published information, in so far as this writer has observed, has been of any use or practical application in this country. It is true, according to their published reports, that the Russians were pioneers in the use of high-pressure water jets in the mining of coal. They report the use of water jets for this purpose as early as 1936. However, according to a survey of foreign literature on the subject made by the U.S. Bureau of Mines1 a few years ago, water jets in the USSR, as well as in other nations including New Zealand, Poland and West Germany, were used principally to sluice the loosened coal after it had been previously drilled and blasted, rather than to cut or break it from the solid face. The interest of the Northern Pacific in the potential application of a high-pressure water jet to the actual extraction of coal, particularly in steeply dipping beds, originated in a visit by this author to the operations of the American Gilsonite Co. at Bonanza, Utah, in March 1958. After seeing the extraction, on a commercial basis, of gilsonite from a 22-ft wide vertical vein of this solid material with a 3/8-in. diam stream of water under approximately 2200 psi, it was felt that, with some modifications, water jets were the solution to the problem of economically mining the steeply dipping (i.e., steeper than 20º) coal beds in the State of Washington.

MECHANICAL loading and conveying equipment has been available for the coal-mining industry for more than twenty years. The earlier equip-ment-was admittedly crude and ill-fitted to perform its intended functions, but there are available today a variety of mechanical loaders and conveyors which may be said to be almost on a par with coal-cutting machines. Despite the fact that such equipment is available and that better and other types of equipment are continually being developed, mechanical loading of coal cannot yet be said to be economically successful, except in a few special cases. It is not an accomplished fact in the sense that machine cutting of coal and electric haulage are accomplished facts and a part of accepted practice. There are two general opinions why we have failed to obtain better results with mechanical loading and con-veying equipment. The equipment manufacturers will say that coal-mine operators have generally failed to establish and maintain the conditions required for suc-cess. The coal-mine operator says that the equipment is not adapted to cope with his specific conditions to the extent required for economically successful results. Just what is the objective of this movement toward mechanical loading? We speak of mechanical loading in such a way as to lead one to believe that we are mere-ly seeking a mechanical equivalent of the human loader and his shovel. Really, we are impressed with the fact that the coal-mining industry has not advanced toward greater productive efficiency to anything like the degree achieved by practically all of the other productive in-dustries, and we are seeking the means to remedy this. We have seen the advantages which follow the intro-duction of coal-cutters and electric haulage-locomotives. The loading of coal is the one major operation in coal mining which has not been mechanized. We believe that a satisfactory, mechanical substitute for the man with the shovel will help us increase our productive efficiency to the same degree as has been accomplished in the other productive industries.

THE World. Engineering Congress closed as it opened, with a brilliant and dignified ceremony. On Oct. 29, 1929, there were hearty speeches of welcome and of hope for the successful issue of this international gathering; on Nov. 7, the farewells were even more heartfelt expressions, and anticipation gave place to, realization. H. I. H. Prince Yasuhito of Chichibu, who had graciously opened the Congress; was unavoidably absent at the closing ceremony, being on duty with his command at the Army maneuvers, so that the principal speech was made by the President of the Congress, Baron Furuichi. The outstanding statistics of the meetings were: an over-all attendance, delegates and members, of 800 from overseas and 2800 Japanese 83 sectional meetings, all. meetings having practically capacity attendance, this being especially true of Section 11, mining and metal¬lurgy, where standing room only was commonly the rule; and 780 papers were presented, in full or in abstract or by title. H. I. H. Prince Chichibu attended each section on Oct. 31. The large attendance of Japanese students was notable at most sections.

GENERAL GEOLOGIC DESCRIPTION The Escalante silver deposit located in southwestern Utah is an epithermal vein system consisting of a hanging wall and footwall vein, straight along strike and dipping about 1.2 rad (70°). The veins consist of banded quartz and calcite fissure fillings between volcanic wall rock that are silicified for some distance outward from the vein. The walls of the veins are sharp and the silver values are irratically distributed through the various bands within the vein. Only very low grade values are to be found in the wall rock on either side. The portion of the veins above the water table have been somewhat leached, with some secondary enrichment below. The mineralogical zonation is variable due to a fluctuating water table through geologic time. SAMPLE MANAGEMENT AND COMPOSITE ASSAYS Sample data for the deposit was obtained from over 50 diamond drill holes, from channel samples cut at intervals across a drift, and from scattered surface trenches along the out- crop of the hanging wall vein. Fig. 13-1 is a surface plan map showing the vein outcrop and some diamond drill locations. Two cross sections through the vein are shown in Figs. 1 3-2 and 13-3. Nearly all of the diamond drill core of vein material was assayed in 0.3-m (I-ft) lengths, from which weighted composite assays were manually calculated for the horizontal thickness of the vein. Eight years ago the Hecla mine, a lead-silver producer, situated at Burke, Idaho, was producing ore from but two levels, the 300- and the 600-ft. All hoisting was done with a 12- by 16-in. slide-valve, double-reel, hoist. The hoist was being worked to its capacity and was unsuitable for hoisting from greater depths. As the work of opening a new level was about to be started, it became necessary to remodel the then-existing equipment or install a new hoist. The recent advent of electricity from Spokane had made available a cheaper power than steam. By a series of tests conducted throughout the Cæaur d'A1ene district, it was found that it cost $109 per year to generate a horse-power with steam. Electric power was to be had for $50 a horse-power per year. It was decided to substitute for the engines a motor-drive, of sufficient capacity to operate from the 900-ft. level, and ultimately install an entirely new hoist. After disconnecting the engines, installing a new shaft, and making a few minor changes, a 300-h-p., 2,300-volt, 514-rev. per min., variable-speed motor of the induction type was geared to the reel-shaft. The reels were supplied with 3/8- by 4-in. flat rope, and the duty of the hoist was about as follows: Cage, 1,700; ore, 2,600; car, 1,400; rope, 2,250; total, 7,950 pounds. The Bristol ammeter chart, Fig. 1, shows the combined current-consumption of the hoist- and mine-motors. The large intermittent load is clearly shown; this produced harmful fluctuations in the voltage of the long, lightly-loaded, 60,000-volt transmission-line from Spokane to the Cæmur d'A1enes.
