The following notes may serve to bring before your Institute an idea of the iron-ore resources of Pictou County. Enough work has been done to permit an estimate to be formed of their quality and probable extent. As yet the systematic mining and smelting of ironore in Nora Scotia is confined to the operations of the Steel Company of Canada, in Colchester County. Although the locality I am about to describe appears, in many respects, well adapted to iron smelting, etc., no attempts have yet been made to begin work. Nora Scotian capital is more readily turned to lumbering, fishing, and shipping ventures; and such an investment appears equally foreign to the rest of the Dominion. I need not, however, go further into this part of the subject, and can only hope that my notes may prove serviceable as indicating a probable field for future development. The accompanying map shows the position of the harbor of Pictou relative to the coal and iron-ore fields, and to the railways which intersect them. The branch of the Intercolonial Railway, running from Truro to Pictou, forms the western boundary of the iron-ore district, which extends beyond the point where the New Glasgow and Cape Breton Railway crosses the French River. The iron-ore district may be roughly described as a triangle formed by the ore-outcrops and the two railways, the former making the base, and the latter the sides of the triangle, the apex resting on the coal-field at New Glasgow. The drainage of the country is toward the Gulf of St. Lawrence, through the Middle, East, Sutherland's, and French rivers; and the surface is undulatory, seldom exceeding two hundred feet above the sea-level, except in the district lying between Glengarry and the upper waters of the French and Sutherland's rivers, where a maximum height of about five hundred feet is reached at several points. Geologically speaking, the district embraces two divisions, the Carboniferous and the Silurian, the latter resting on strata provisionally considered to be of pre-Cambrian age. As no geological

An experimental method is described to compare strain data for rock and rock bolts when exposed to shock waves released by blastings. Static and dynamic strains were measured. Bolt gage response indicated a static decay of the bolt anchorage coupled with a reaction due to blasting vibrations. A distinct loss of bolt tension was indicated during vibrations and this was accompanied by a smaller but steady loss of tension due to static loading. The strain losses were found to relate to the shock source distance and the vibrational amplitude in the rock and bolts. Millions of roof bolts are used each year to stabilize mine openings and prevent their failure. Frequently, bolts become loose and lose their effectiveness as reinforcement to the mine structure. Many attempts have been made to determine the cause of loosening, including observation of the bolt tension or bolt torque through the use of torque wrenches, compression pads, and load cells. Pull tests have been used extensively to determine anchorage characteristics.102 These investigations have shown that even when bolts are loaded below the nominal anchorage capacity of the rock under 'static' conditions they exhibit a decay of load through adjustments and slippage at the bolt anchor. Since bolts are quite often found with the plate hanging loose from the rock surface, this condition suggests that some additional mechanism may have played a part in loosening the anchorage. Vibration from blasting or shock loading have been suggested as one cause in this type of anchorage deterioration. This paper gives the results of an investigation carried on at the University of Missouri at Rolla to determine the influence of shock waves on rock-bolt anchorage stability. ROCK BOLT ANCHORAGE UNDER DYNAMIC LOADING CONDITIONS In this report dynamic loading conditions are defined as conditions under which rock and bolts are exposed to vibrations occurring as a consequence of blasting, machine vibrations, earthquakes, rock bursts, etc. Whatever the location of the shock source, the waves created suffer extensive alterations along their travel paths, depending upon the vibrational properties and geometric parameters of the transmitting media. Together with reflection, refraction and diffraction at material boundaries, waves suffer changes in their nature to form tensile, compressive and shear waves. They become polarized, retracted, accelerated, dispersed, so that the waves incident at a point in the material can be the result of either one or a combination of this wide range of processes. A certain fraction of the wave energy will be lost due to friction, deformation, and material failure at the anchor-rock contact. Thus, the physical nature of wave propagation is such that it inhibits an exact analytical solution. For this reason this investigation should be considered qualitative rather than quantitative even though numerical data have been used as a base. CONCEPT OF THE INVESTIGATION Experiments were designed to find, from a series of rock bolts installed in natural mine rock, whether or not, and to what extent, bolt tensions would be influenced when bolts were exposed repeatedly to shock waves such as those produced by blasting. Electronic instrumentation available in the rock mechanics laboratory of the University of Missouri at Rolla was used to observe wave development in the rock and vibrational reactions in the bolts. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Fig. 1 illustrates schematically the experimental equipment. Electric resistance wire strain gages were used as sensors for the strain response of the rock and the bolts. Bolts were 5 ft long and 5/8 in. in diam, equipped with two-leaf type expansion shells for 1 3/8 in. boreholes. The bolt gages were mounted by use of Du Pont Household Cement, covered with an epoxy insulation and then enclosed in a copper foil for electronic shielding. For details of placement and the wiring diagram see Fig. 2 and 3. The output of both the rock gages and the bolt gages was fed into cathode ray oscilloscopes from which the vibrational traces could be photographed. A static strain indicator was also used to read the output of all gages.

Rand shall be placed in the custody of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, to be set up as a trust to be known as the `Charles F. Rand Foundation', the income of which shall each year be applied to a distinct purpose to be decided upon in that year by vote of the Board of Directors. This purpose shall be such as to promote the general welfare of the Institute and to constitute a permanent memorial of the usefulness of Mr. Rand, who for many years gave unstintingly of his time and talents in its service.

Discussion of the paper of BOYD DUDLEY, JR., presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 96, December, 1914, pp. 2767 to 2782. H. 0. HOFMAN, Boston, Mass.-At the close of the paper Mr. Dudley said that his experiments in the laboratory had shown that it was possible to separate nickel from copper by means of a chloridizing roasting, but that in order to demonstrate a process of this kind, work upon a large scale would have to be carried out. I think it was in 1913, that experiments of this kind were carried out at the works of the Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Co., Philadelphia, in a Wedge furnace, and at Sault Ste. Marie in a Sjöstedt furnace. They showed a satisfactory separation of nickel and copper. The ore was first subjected to an oxidizing roast, then mixed with pyrite and salt, and given a chloridizing roast. A. H. Carpenter published in the Engineering and Mining Journal, vol. xcvii, p. 1085 (1914) the details of this work. The conclusion arrived at is, that if you subject sulphide ore to an oxidizing roast, finishing at the temperature at which all nickel sulphate is dissociated, i.e., 764° C., then mix it with pyrite and salt, and subject the mixture to a chloridizing roast between 600° and 700° C., you can chloridize a high percentage of the copper without chloridizing any of the nickel, and obtain thereby a satisfactory means of separating the two.

Man: A purely detached consideration of nature and the place of man in it may easily result in somewhat pessimistic conclusions as to man and his destiny. However, when we come to the evaluation of man's role in the development of natural resources and his achievements in this field, a more optimistic tone may be justified. Hence the possible contradictions between Man and Nature, Perfection, and the present chapter are more apparent than real. After all, progress must have a foundation of optimism, and we cannot challenge either the faculty or the students to better work and to a progressive and constructive outlook without an underlying tone of optimism and basic faith in the future. Geology is the basic science of Mother Earth; the science of the natural forces that have produced and modified the structure of our globe; the science of minerals and rocks; of landscapes and soils; of water supply and mineral resources, including mineral fuels; and of the history of life, both plant and animal, as revealed by fossils in rocks. It is difficult to reduce man and his historical significance to their proper relationship with regard to the earth and its history. Processes of rock formation have continued for at least two billion years; man's activities have been in evidence only a few thousand years. As a means of comparison, if the height of the Empire State building were to represent geologic time, the thickness of a nickel placed on the tower would just about repre-

THE fluorescence of scheelite has been an important aid in recent years in the discovery and development of scheelite deposits. The use of fluorescence of synthetic compounds in industry, particularly in advertising, also has expanded greatly during the past decade. As a result, a number of new and convenient units for producing ultraviolet energy have become available, which have led to a greater application of fluorescence in the study of minerals. Studies have shown that the fluorescent color of a mineral may vary: (I) with the kind and quantity of trace elements, and (2) with the particular wave length of ultraviolet energy used. The wave length is dependent first on the type of generating equipment used, and finally on the filter employed to remove the visible light that may be present. A number of so-called ultraviolet lamps are listed and described, together with suitable filters known to be available. Scheelite fluoresces brilliantly with wave lengths of 2200 to about 3000Å., but not with longer wave lengths. The most convenient and efficient sources of ultraviolet for scheelite fluorescence- are portable and laboratory units designed particularly for use with scheelite. So-called ultraviolet light globes of the photo-flood type emit wave lengths too long to cause scheelite to fluoresce. Attention is called to the minerals that fluoresce in a manner similar to scheelite, which necessitates a check test by means of characteristic physical properties. Chemical tests are the final authority both for identity and content of tungsten in scheelite ore.

In conjunction with the need for accurate volumetric data in the Fe-V system for subsequent use in calculating the high-pressure diagrams, room- and high-temperature X-ray diffraction measurements have been carried out. No previous measurements have been published on lattice parameters or volume changes associated with the a transformation for Fe-V alloys. The existing literature on lattice-parameter data for the a and s phases has been reviewed by pearson1 with considerable uncertainty indicated in the data. In order to obtain a good estimate of ?Va-? for thermodynamic calculations of the a D ?(bee D fee) phase stability, high-temperature vacuum X-ray diffraction measurements were made on an Fe-V alloy of 0.92 wt pet V. The term ?Va-? is the difference of molar volumes of the limiting solubilities of the a and y phases at any given temperature; these values can be calculated readily from the appropriate lattice-parameter data. The equipment used was a commercially available MRC (Materials Research Corp.) high-temperature X-ray camera which was fitted to a Norelco diffractometer

The continuing depletion of high-grade ore de- posits in this country has created a need to develop more effective methods for recovering valuable metals from low-grade ores. The use of microorganisms for their biochemical reactions is one possible way to solve certain phases of this problem. Bacteria have been used successfully by many diversified industries. Until recently, however, little attention has been focused on the use of bacteria in mining and metallurgical processes. This report summarizes one phase of the microbial studies being conducted at the U.S. Bureau of Mines, College Park Metallurgy Research Center. The two-fold objective of this study was, first, to determine if pure strains of the bacteria Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans, Thiobacillus concretivorus and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans could utilize the iron and sulfur occurring in sulfide minerals to produce appreciable quantities of ferric sulfate and sulfuric acid for dissolving copper and, second, to develop the chemistry involved in the microbial oxidation of sulfide minerals. These are of particular interest as they relate directly to the feasibility of employing microorganisms in leaching operations.

Chemical and physical properties of soils and overburden materials must be evaluated prior to strip mining activities. This information can be used to assess whether subsurface overburden can be equal in quality to the native soils, especially when these soils are classed as prime farm lands. In northeast Texas, lignite primarily occurs in the Calvert Bluff formation which is underlain by the Simboro and Hooper formations. These formations are in the Wilcox group (early Eocene). The Carrizo formation, that unconformably overlies the Calvert Bluff formation, consists of thick layers of sand with poor water and nutrient retention capabilities. These materials are least suited for placement on the surface of reclaimed land. The oxidized, medium textured overburden of the Culvert Bluff and Simboro formations possess adequate water and nutrient retention properties and are better suited for sustained plant growth when compared to the existing native soils. Non-oxidized Calvert Bluff and Hooper sediments generally have acceptable properties for reclamation although acid forming sulfides occasionally occur. Materials high in sulfides must be buried during mining or appropriately treated prior to reclamation.

A group of 17 American blast-furnace sinters, an American open-hearth sinter, an American iron ore, and a Swedish sinter were used to evaluate testing methods adapted to appraise sinter properties. Statistical calculations were performed on the data to determine correlation coefficients for several sets of sinter properties. Properties of strength and dusting were related to total porosity, slag ratio, and total slag. Reducibility was related to the degree of oxidation of the sinters. THIS report to the American iron and steel industry marks the completion of a 1949 survey of blast-furnace sinter practice sponsored by the Subcommittee on Agglomeration of Fines of the American Iron & Steel Institute. The use of sinter in blast furnaces, sinter properties, raw materials, and sinter plant operation have been reported recently.1,2 After preliminary research and study," test procedures were adapted to appraise the physical and chemical properties of sinter to determine what constitutes a good sinter. During the 1949 to 1950 plant survey each plant submitted a 400-lb grab sample to research personnel at Mellon Institute, Pittsburgh, Pa. A 400-lb sample was also submitted from Sweden. In addition, 2 tons of group 3 fines iron ore were obtained from a Pittsburgh steel plant. The following tests were performed on the iron ore sample and on the 19 sinter samples: chemical analysis; impact test for strength and dusting; reducibility test; surface area measurements, B.E.T. nitrogen adsorption method; S.K. porosity test; Davis tube magnetic analysis; X-ray diffraction analysis for magnetite and hematite; and microstructure. Results of these evaluations are discussed in this paper and supply a critical look at testing procedures used to determine sinter quality. Sinter Tests and Results Each 400-lb grab sample of sinter was secured at a time when it was believed to represent normal production practice at each plant. It was not possible to use the same sampling procedures throughout the survey; consequently samples were taken from blast-furnace bins, cooling tables, and railroad cars. These were very useful for evaluation of test methods, since they were obtained from plants with widely divergent operations. With the exception of Swedish sinter and sinter sample N, which were produced on the Greenawalt type of pans, all survey sinters were produced on the Dwight-Lloyd type of sintering machines. Sinters submitted for test were prepared in identical manner by crushing in a roll crusher (set at 1 in.), mixing, and quartering. To secure specific size fractions for tests, one quarter of the sample was crushed in a jaw crusher and hammer mill to obtain a —10 mesh size. The remainder was screened to obtain specific size fractions. The group 3 fines iron ore was dried and screened and samples were taken from selected screen sizes to be used for various tests. Prior to testing, each ore sample except the —100 mesh fraction was washed with water to remove all fine material and was then dried. This iron ore, a hematitic ore from the Lake Superior region, was used as a base line for comparing results of tests on sinters. The iron ore did not lend itself to impact testing, since it was compacted rather than crushed in the test, and no impact tests are reported. However, the iron ore was subjected to all remaining physical tests to be described. Chemical Analysis: Table I presents chemical analyses performed on the survey sinter samples. Included in this table are data obtained from determination of FeO and the slag relationships: CaO + MgO and total slag (CaO + MgO + SiO, SiO2 + Al2o3 + TiO2). The percentage of FeO was used as an indication of the percentage of magnetite in the sinter. It was believed that slag relationships could be correlated with sinter properties. During initial determination of FeO great disagreement arose among various laboratories, both as to the results and the methods of determining values. Table I lists the values of FeO resulting from the U. S. Steel Corp. method of chemical analysis,' which reports the total FeO soluble in hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids (metallic iron not removed) with dry ice used to produce the protective atmosphere during digestion. Use of dry ice was a modification required to obtain reproducible results. In this method, the iron silicates and metallic iron are believed to go into solution and are therefore reported as FeO. This is important, for in the study of the microstructure of sinters, glassy constituents suspected of containing FeO as well as crystallized phases of undetermined identity which may also contain FeO have been observed. Strength Test by Impact: In evaluating sinter quality, one of the properties stressed most by blastfurnace operators is strength. This strength may be described as the resistance to breakage during handling of sinter between the sinter plant and the blast-furnace bins. It is also the strength necessary to withstand the burden in the blast-furnace. After

Briefly, an open stope is one in which the ore is taken out and no filling is put in; the only support for the walls may be posts or pillars of ore. Such a method is limited to orebodies with strong walls and ore strong enough to stand unsupported over the back of the stope. Details vary and depend on the dip of the vein, mode of breaking ground, method of handling broken ore, and so forth. The examples given are the Beat-son, Birmingham district, Mineville district, and Cornucopia.

The study of the possibility of effecting a lower cost in the manufacture of pig iron reveals the importance of the ever present question of slag chemistry and volume. Factors that determine slag chemistry and volume are the impurities in the ore available, the ash-sulphur content of the coke, and a flux material necessary to promote removal of sulphur. Of these, the ores present by far the major source of impurities and what may prove to be the lowest practical slag volume with desired chemistry in one locality may be considered low or high in some other center of iron manufacture. The Chicago district is not only blessed with ores of high quality, but with excellent coke and flux materials as well. It is the intent of this paper to discuss slag problems at the South Works only, where burdens consist of Mesabi ores, Michigan stone, and coke ranging from 7 to 9 per cent ash and containing an average of 0.57 per cent sulphur. Early in the development of modern blast-furnace practice, the consideration of slags was secondary to the many adjustments of mechanical difficulties, such as furnace lines, stock distribution, stove design for obtaining higher blast temperatures, improved chemical segregation and size of raw materials. Furnace operators, after making these improvements, turned their attention to the study of other refinements in practice, of which slag chemistry appeared to be the most important. It is only within the last two decades that operators have become familiar with the various aspects of slag compositions. The industry, while rather slow in its recognition, is indebted to such investigators as Rankin,1 Wright,1 Feild,2 Royster,2 McCaffery,3 Kinney,4 Holbrook,5 and Joseph,5 whose researches concerning the elimination of sulphur within the blast furnace and the effect of slag composition upon melting point, viscosity, and desulphurizing power have established criteria for the selection of slags of the requisite quality. It is the intent of this paper to discuss slag problems at the South Works only, where burdens consist of Mesabi ores, Michigan stone, and coke ranging from 7 to 9 per cent ash and containing an average of 0.57 per cent sulphur. Early in the development of modern blast-furnace practice, the consideration of slags was secondary to the many adjustments of mechanical difficulties, such as furnace lines, stock distribution, stove design for obtaining higher blast temperatures, improved chemical segregation and size of raw materials. Furnace operators, after making these improvements, turned their attention to the study of other refinements in practice, of which slag chemistry appeared to be the most important. It is only within the last two decades that operators have become familiar with the various aspects of slag compositions. The industry, while rather slow in its recognition, is indebted to such investigators as Rankin,1 Wright,1 Feild,2 Royster,2 McCaffery,3 Kinney,4 Holbrook,5 and Joseph,5 whose researches concerning the elimination of sulphur within the blast furnace and the effect of slag composition upon melting point, viscosity, and desulphurizing power have established criteria for the selection of slags of the requisite quality. The study of earthquakes long ago developed the fact that by study-ing the travel .times of the various groups of waves from the same earthquake, as received on seismographs :it varying distances, major discont'inuities in the earth's crust, could be reasonably well defined. Using this original discovery, and adapting the mathematical methods originally devised in seismology for determining the depth below the surface at which such discontinuities occur, other investigators were able to develop a new branch of seismology which promises to be extremely useful in extending the boundaries of our information on local conditions Below the earth's surface. As an outstanding example of the applications of this work, we have the so-called " seismograph " exploration of the Gulf Coastal region, which has resulted in the discovery of a large number of salt domes, from many of which oil fields may be developed. The original seismological investigations, from which different major discontinuities in the earth's crust were deduced, as well as these later successful experiments in locating salt-dome structures, involve relatively simple problems. In each case we arc dealing with surface materials in which elastic waves will be propagated with a fairly definite velocity. Under this material we have something quite different', in which the elastic waves will be propagated with a much higher velocity. The transition from one medium to the other is likewise relativtly abrupt. For example, in the Gulf Coastal region the sedimentary formations have a velocity of 6000 or 7000 ft. per sec., while the velocity of elastic waves in the cap rock of a salt dome may exceed 15,000 ft. per sec. Under such conditions, delineation of the formation is a relatively simple matter, and, furthermore, there is very little opportunity for ambiguous results. IN A STATEMENT summarizing general conditions in the Federated American Engineering Societies, the executive secretary, L. W. Wallace, expresses the belief that the Federation has made substantial progress. At the annual meeting of the American Engineering Council, to be held in Washington Jan. 5 and 6, this progress will be shown by reports covering activities in many fields. "Unquestionably," says Mr. Wallace, "the Federa¬tion has made favorable and permanent contacts in Washington. Through the, activities of Congress and of the new Federal administration. we have had the opportunity to render some really constructive service. We feel, however, that the great body of engineers are not adequately informed of the organization of the Federation, of its aims and purposes and of its activities.
