Over 200 billion tons of coal reserves lie locked up in deposits west of the Mississippi River-and of this, well over 100 billion tons are recoverable only by underground mining methods. Yet, because of the associated problems of unfavorable economics and inadequate technology, western underground mines contribute less than 2% to the annual US coal production. In order to reach the billion-ton coal production level called for by President Carter, it a pears the majority of new coal development will come from the West. But for this to be possible, new mining methods and equipment must be designed to match the unique thick seam conditions.

Tests were conducted utilizing large flat jack devices placed in a vertical slot for high pressure loading of rock to measure in-situ properties of a rock mass. The high pressure flat jack devices were used as a site investigation tool to obtain rock mass properties. Tests were conducted before and after a 100 ton surface high explosive detonation test to assess explosive effects on the rock. It was conclusively demonstrated by these tests that meaningful flat jack tests could be successfully accomplished; also, a significantly different response of the rock medium was measured as larger areas of rock were loaded. Surface jointing was severely disturbed by the explosion.

Continuing tantalum alloy development studies have been concerned with a more detailed investigation of promising binary, ternary, and more complex tantalum alloys containing Groups IV-A, V-A, VI -A. VII-A, and VII-A metal additions. A primary objective of these studies was to improve the elevated temperature strength of tantalum with minimum degradation of fabricability and low-temperature ductility by alloying. Several alloys were found to exhibit hot tensile strengths in the excess of 25, 15, and 10 ksi at 2700°, 3000°, and 3500°F, respectively, combined with excellent cryogenic toughness and ductility. Particularly outstanding in this respect are alloys in the system Ta-Mo-W. Ternary parameter curves describing hot-strength, low-temperature ductility, recrystallization temperature, weld ductility, and fabricability are presented for the Ta-Cb-V, Ta-Hf-W, Ta-Mo-Hf, Ta-Mo-V, Ta-Mo-W, and Ta-V-W systems. At present, only four metals qualify for large scale structural applications at temperatures above about 1800°F. These are tungsten, tantalum, molybdenum, and columbium. Research and development work on these refractory metals has progressed to the point where efforts are now primarily directed toward the improvement of high- and low-temperature mechanical properties through alloying. High melting point combined with excellent low-temperature ductility, fabricability, toughness, weldability, and high solubility and tolerance for both substitutional and interstitial solutes are important attributes of tantalum. Conversely, its high density and relative scarcity compared with other refractory metals are the major deterrents to the use of tantalum. Early studies in the Battelle alloy development program established base line data on the mechanical and metallurgical properties of high-purity tantalum.' These studies were extended to include a preliminary investigation of the effects of various alloying elements on the established base properties.2,3 Recent studies involved a more detailed investigation of promising binary alloys containing Cb, Hf, Mo, Os, Re, Ru, and W, and ternary Ta-Cb-V, Ta-Hf-W, Ta-Mo-Hf, Ta-Mo-V, Ta-Mo-W, and Ta-V-W alloys. Results of major importance obtained are given in this article. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Electron-beam-melted tantalum (Wah Chang) and high-purity alloying elements were consolidated as 150-g ingots by multiple nonconsumable arc melting under a partial atmosphere of helium. Homogeneity of the button ingots was checked radiographically. Alloy buttons measured about 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 in. in diam by about 0.35 and 0.50 in. thick. Nominal alloy compositions were checked on each alloy button by weighing after arc melting. In most instances, weight losses were within 3 pct of the total weight charged. Subsequent chemical analyses on a number of selected alloys showed interstitial contents to range as shown below: Range of Interstitial Content, ppm 0 C N H 25-75 50-100 10-50 1-5 Metallic alloying additions were found to agree well with nominal compositions based on weight change data. Fabrication directly from the cast button to sheet was conducted at low (75° to 900°F), intermediate (1800° to 2000°F), or high (3000°F) temperatures, depending upon alloy content and hardness. Evacuated stainless steel or molybdenum packs were used for fabrication at intermediate and high temperatures, respectively. The temperature required to complete recrystal-lization in one hour was determined by hardness measurements and metallographic observations (longitudinal test sections) after vacuum annealing at 180°F intervals in the range 2010° to 2910°F. All mechanical property evaluations were conducted on recrystallized sheet, nominally 0.04 in. thick. Weldability of the various alloys was screened using manual TIG welding techniques. Bend ductility (bend axis perpendicular to weld axis) was the criterion used for evaluation. Tensile specimens employed 0.200 by 1 in. gage lengths, and bend test specimens measured about 1 by 1/4 in. Low-temperature tensile tests were conducted using a crosshead speed of 0.02 in. per min up to the point of yielding, and 0.05 in. per min to fracture. The objective of the model studies described in this paper is to determine the effect of planar discontinuities on the strength and deformability of a rock mass. A model material was used because it satisfied concurrently three requirements that available natural-rock samples did not: (1) low strength, which was desirable for minimizing the loads that had to be applied in the laboratory; (2) ease of producing test specimens with geometrically regular joint patterns; and (3) uniformity of the test specimens. The model tests were performed on specimens made from a single modeling material and tested under triaxial stress conditions with [u,=u,]. Results are presented in this paper for tests on specimens that had (1) a single joint set inclined at several angles to the major principal direction, including 0º and 90°, and (2) two joint sets that were mutually perpendicular, one set perpendicular to and one set parallel to the major principal direction. Several different joint spacings were used in each series. Future tests will include a series with two sets of joints that make oblique angles with each other and with the major principal direction. The results of model tests and tests on cores of jointed rock by several investigators (e.g., Müller and Pacher,l Moore,2 Krsmanovic and Milic,3 Hayashi,4 Rosenblad,5 Jaeger,6 and Lane and Heck 7, have contributed significantly to the design of these experiments, which are believed to be the first in which a comprehensive study has been made of the combined effects under triaxial loading of joint spacing and joint orientation (Fig. 1).

Handling and transport of coal during the winter months can be a severe problem. The inability to unload frozen coal from rail cars produces serious economic and logistic problems due to transportation delays, rail car shortages, and demurrage on the rail cars. One method of dealing with the problem of unloading frozen coal has been to spray freeze conditioning agents onto the coal before it is loaded into rail cars. Both water soluble and oil based formulations have been used as freeze conditioning agents. The water soluble treatments generally contain a polyhydroxy alcohol, such as ethylene glycol, or salts of alkaline earth metals, such as magnesium chloride and calcium chloride, as freeze point depressants. The oil based treatments consist principally of hydrocarbons, such as No. 2 oil or diesel fuel. The authors' tests have shown significant differences in the effectiveness of these freeze conditioning agents, depending on the particular coal substrate being treated. These differences correlate with the coal porosity and inherent moisture of the substrate. In general, the greater the porosity of the coal, the smaller the effect of the freeze conditioning agents. Coal porosity has a greater impact on water soluble freeze conditioning agents than oil based products. The authors investigated the pore structure of a variety of coals using mercury intrusion. Findings were related to the effectiveness of different freeze conditioning agents as measured by unconfined compression strength tests. In general, coals with a large number of very small pores (between 0.05 µm and 0.03 µm) do not respond as well to freeze conditioning chemicals.

THE Cornucopia gold quartz veins form a parallel vein system traversing meta-morphic and granodioritic rocks. Field and petrographic evidence suggests that metasomatism has played an important role both in the emplacement of the grano-diorite and in the formation of the veins. Structurally the veins appear to be related to the major tectonic features of the Wallowa Mountains and to be narrow shear zones rather than filled fissures. Petrographic studies indicate a complex history of formation starting from initial alteration along fractures or joints followed by recurrent fracturing and a quartz-forming stage,-and closing with continued shearing and microbrecciation, which permitted the upward percolation of the later ore-forming solutions. The precipitation of ore minerals from these solutions formed ore shoots. Postmineral effects include the injection of Tertiary basaltic dikes, a slight amount of cross faulting, and some movement along the planes of the veins as well as oxidation. INTRODUCTION Cornucopia is in the southeastern part of the rugged Wallowa Moun-tains of northeastern Oregon. It was founded over 50 years ago following the discovery of its system of gold quartz veins. The major veins are roughly parallel and dip into the western side of Pine Valley, which drains the southern slope of the range. Previous operations had cut the upper portion of four major veins with two tunnels over 1000 ft. apart, when the present operating company drove a third tunnel, called the Coulter, at the level of the valley over 1000 ft. lower to intersect the most easterly major vein at over 6200 ft. from the portal.

The predominent method of coal mining in the United States for years has been room-and-pillar mining. The reason for this has been the advantages of room-and- pillar method which is a relatively flexible system and its capital investment. The room-and-pillar method permits some selectivity in mining, especially where gas wells, faults and possible coal quality may be a factor. The mobility of continuous and conventional mining equipment used to develop entries may also be used for retreat mining of rooms and pillars. Longwall mining of coal takes place along a long straight face, or wall, blocked out between two butt or panel entries. The long faces or walls are normally projected in lengths of 61 to 183 m (200 to 600 ft) in this country. The longwall method of mining had its beginning in the United States during the 1800's. During that period, pack wall and wood posts were used for roof support. The longwall face was mined by miners using picks to undercut the coal. To keep the coal face from turning over, short wood posts called sprags were set in a slant position as the coal face was undercut to the depth of two to three feet. When the under-cutting cycle was completed, the sprags were removed to permit the coal to fall from the roof pressure. The longwall mining of coal did not take a firm hold during the 18009s, and room-and-pillar prevailed. In the early 19009s, steel jacks were introduced, and along with it, the modified caving theory. In March of 1950, a retreat longwall mining system, utilizing a plow, manually operated props, wood cribs and chock releases, was installed in one of Eastern Associated Coal Corp.'s mines.

During the last half century a great amount of ingenuity and energy has been devoted to the invention of appliances for the recovery of valuable minerals from very fine sands and slimes. The reason for this is that in almost every dressing plant the greatest losses of values, considered relatively as well as absolutely, occur in the treatment of slimes. The natural aim of mill operators to minimize these losses has in recent years received another impetus, from the fact that the gradually diminishing occurrence of high-grade ores makes a more intense recovery of values from existing resources absolutely necessary for profitable operation. The results of such attempts are found in the appearance of a great number of machines and appliances which make it profitable to-day to rework old clumps, containing the tailings of older processes. A constantly growing difficulty of obtaining skilled labor and the increase in wages made it prohibitory to employ those types of machines which required much attention, and in the middle of the ninieteenth century the various concentrating tables of the percussion type, which automatically discharge their products, began to take the place of the intermittent tables, on which, when the bed had reached a certain thickness, operation had to be stopped in order to allow the skimming by hand of the separate layers formed on the table. In the course of years, two general types of machines evolved for the treatment of fine sands arid slimes: The so-called concentrators and vanners, on the one hand, and the buddles and round tables on the other.' Spectral reflectance data in the wavelength region of 0.45 to 2.4 µm have been obtained for various rock types and different forms of natural vegetation by means of JPL's portable field reflectance spectrometer. Computer analysis of these data has demonstrated the importance of obtaining remotely sensed spectral data beyond the wave- length region sensed by Landsat. Computer processing techniques have been developed and used for the analysis of these data and their application to a variety of geologic problems.

IN a report upon the geology of Leadville and vicinity, which is still in the hands of the Public Printer, I have given, at some length, my conclusions as to the genesis of the remarkable silver-lead deposits of that region, and the data, gathered during a long and careful consideration, upon which my views were founded. In the brief abstract of this report, published in 1881, the bare conclusions are given, with but few of the facts upon which they were founded. Since that time, these conclusions have been variously criticised, and it has even been assumed that the views I expressed with regard to these deposits were intended as a theory of ore-deposits in general. Had my final report been printed, no such misconception could have occurred; for, in that I explicitly disclaim any intention of general application of the theories there presented. Even in the abstract I am unable to find any statements which would. justify such a conclusion. Since my Leadville work, however, I have had further opportunities of examining ore-deposits, and have given the general subject much thought and study, and, as a result, I have made in my own mind certain generalizations, which, I am conscious, need the test of a far greater number of practical applications than I have yet been able to make, but which, I think, it may be well to present to the members of the Institute as suggestive, that their own observations may further prove or disprove them. I shall use my Leadville observations and the criticisms which have been made upon them as a sort of text for my remarks. As a part of a USBM-ASARCO cooperative rock-burst research program, a burstprone stope pillar at the Galena mine was successfully destressed. Destressing was accomplished by blasting a single line of long holes in the footwall of the vein. As a result of destressing, the pillar was fractured and softened; hence it yielded, releasing a large amount of stored elastic strain energy nonviolently. In addition, the high stress in the pillar was shifted out around the stope walls and in the sandfill. Both broad-band microseismic monitoring and seismic velocity surveys were used to evaluate the destressing test. The mechanics of destressing were determined by finite element computer model studies of destressing. Results of the field destressing test agreed remarkably well with the predicted results from the computer model.

The importance of grain size and its control in wrought brass needs no lengthy discussion, since specifications so often make exact control imperative. Aids to this control are therefore of interest. The effect of a number of different elements on the grain growth of brass under various conditions of annealing has been reported in the technical literature. In particular, a paper by Cook and Miller1 a few years ago, with the discussion that followed, gave valuable information on the effects of iron, phosphorus, manganese, aluminum, aluminum plus nickel, and aluminum plus silicon. Price12 in his discussion of that paper, added a description of some commercial brasses that exhibited a grain-refining effect owing to the presence of 2 per cent A1 and 1 per cent Ni. Gibson and Doss3 have recently given data on the effect of iron on annealing high brass. No comprehensive study, however, has been given to the effect of additions of chromium. It has been the purpose of this investigation to determine the effect of adding various amounts of chromium to a plain cartridge brass, particularly in regard to the effect on grain growth in various annealing treatments after cold-working. Prepakation of Alloys Alloys of high-purity brass of 68.5 Cu, 31.5 Zn composition were made containing from 0 to 0.17 per cent Cr. These were produced in induction furnaces, using unlined graphite crucibles to hold the charge. The melts were cast into rectangular chill molds giving ingots about % by 3 by 10 in. in size.

The Copper Canyon CIL-Au-Ag deposits include two geologically distinct hypogene ore bodies developed primarily in late Paleozoic rocks adjacent to a 38-m.y.old potassic-altered granodiorite, whose emplacement seems to have been controlled largely by the Virgin fault, a north-striking normal fault. Widespread but subeconomic concentrations of sulfides as fracture and cavity fillings in skarn apparently preceded the final intrusion of the granodiorite. In the west ore body, metals reached ore-grade concentrations through the massive replacement of andradite by chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and pyrite mineral assemblages. The east ore body probably formed after the granodiorite reached its present level. Data suggest that fluids associated with potassic alteration here were most likely composed of magmatic water mixed with some meteoric water.

APPROXIMATELY 5,788,000 long tons of crude ore was produced by the Eastern magnetite industry in 1946, or a drop of 26 per cent compared -with 1945. Decrease in production -throughout the industry varied from :8 per cent for the mine with the lowest reduction to 49 per cent for the mine -with the highest reduction. At the Chateaugay mine, operated by :the Republic Steel Corp. at Lyon Mountain, N. Y., 426,900 long tons of crude ,ore was produced, yielding 129,500 long tons of concentrates or a reduction of 46 per cent compared with the previous year. Owing to a strike the mine was closed down from Jan. 21 to July 29. At the Mineville mines, also operated by Republic Steel, output was 755,000 long tons of crude ore or a reduction of 49 per cent compared with 1945. The yield from the crude ore production consisted of 51,500 long tons of lump ore and 380,000 long tons of concentrates. The Mineville plant did not operate from March 17 through July 28, on account of the strike. The Fisher Hill mine, which produced 93,000 long tons of crude ore, included in the above figures, has not operated since March 17, 1946.
