As the result of a series of analyses and volume determinations of gases discharged from the converters at the Garfield Smelting Co.'s. smelter at Garfield, Utah, it was found that a considerable amount of lead fume was escaping from the stacks of the converter plant, and `that if this lead could be recovered at a reasonable expense an attempt should be made to collect it. Two methods suggested themselves: (1) filtration through bags; (2) electrical precipitation of the condensed fume by a Cottrell plant. Filtration through Bags Tests were made in filtering converter gases through the ordinary woolen bags of lead-smelter bag houses to determine how long such material could withstand the corrosive action of the gases. While blowing on white metal only, the fabric was usually destroyed in 10 to 14 hr. In tests conducted in filtering gases when blowing on matte or slagging stage exclusively and when relatively considerable lead was being volatilized, bags in one instance lasted 60.5 hr. It therefore was evident that the Garfield converter gases did not contain in themselves sufficient neutralizing elements for the purpose of direct bag filtration, even during the slagging stage. Such results were more or less anticipated, but it was thus proved that under all conditions of blowing Garfield mattes a very considerable amount of neutralizing agent, zinc oxide or lime, or both combined, as in the Sprague process, would be required to render bag filtration possible. Again, owing to the constantly changing quantities of SO3 from a given battery of converters, depending on the number blowing at a given time and on the stages of the blow, it would be practically impossible to feed automatically the required amount of neutralizer. In order to safeguard the bags sufficient neutralizer would have to be continuously added to meet the maximum SO3 output, thus. wasting neutralizers and giving an undesirably diluted final product. The early methods of mining anthracite in the steep pitching Mammoth bed consisted in driving breasts up the pitch from the gangways and airways driven in the bed along the strike (Plate 2, Fig. 1). Breasts are simply rooms driven up the pitch the full thickness of the bed (Plate 2, Fig. 2), having a width of from 18 to 30 ft., and a manway or traveling way on one or both sides. (For detail of breast method see Whildin, Trans., vol. 50, p. 704). Many difficulties were encountered, and the maintenance cost of the timbered gangways was so great as to be practically prohibitive. To reduce this expense, the gangways were driven in the thin Skidmore bed underlying the Mammoth, and the coal mined through rock holes. (Plate 2, Fig. 2, A.) It was found that after the breasts were driven up 80 to 100 ft., the coal almost invariably rushed or "ran away," making good ventilation almost impossible and the extraction of coal from the upper portion of the lift very difficult. The economic length of a lift is from 200 to 250 ft., and the percentage of extraction by the old method above mentioned was often under 50 per cent., while the coal recovered was so badly broken up as to reduce materially the percentage of large sizes. Principles of Present Mining Methods The present methods designed for the recovery of a maximum percentage of coal and a maximum yield of the prepared sizes depends largely on the following principles: First.—Formerly the practice in mining bituminous coal was to space rooms so that as much coal as possible could be extracted in first mining (Plate 3). In the dry regions of the globe many silver-deposits display certain remarkable features, which at the same time are so totally unlike anything met with among ore-bodies elsewhere that they hare long presented exceptional dificulties, not only to a satisfactory explanation of their origin, but to economical milling. A most striking peculiarity of these ores is the haloid character of many of their bonanzas. To this fact more than to any other may be ascribed most of the unusual uncertainties of mining-operations in desert countries—the marvelous local richness of the ores under certain conditions and the often abrupt transition to utter poverty; the inadequacy of ordinary prospecting customs and the constant devising of new exploratory methods; the unaccountable losses in smelting and the continual change in treatment-practice. For these anomalies certain climatic conditions seem to be chiefly responsible.

LUTHER B. EAMES, Pueblo, Colo. (written discussion*).-In reading Mr. North's interesting paper, several points have been noted that appear to warrant discussion. With a feed all through 20 mesh, I feel inclined to question the use of steel balls as large as 2 in. in a tube mill. I have seen balls as small as-3/4 in. used for the dry grinding of cement clinker, and surely many more points of contact would result from smaller balls. This would seem to be desirable in a mill as short as 6 ft. The heavy load in the classifiers would also indicate a high proportion of returned pulp. I hope that some discussion by Mr. North -and others may develop this point. The flow sheet on page 1181 shows the solution returning from the dam valued at 40 c. per ton being added to the last decantation tank. Theoretically, this solution should not be added to that of a lower value. As I calculate it, if this solution were added to tank X the solution finally discharged from tank Z would be reduced in value by nearly 4 c. per ton.

During July and August, 1899, the writer took advantage of an opportunity of going to Shansi to gather some information concerning the geology and value of the already famous coalfields of that province. The long journey, mainly on slow river-boats, and the limited time at command, allowed only about ten days of work to be done in the coal-fields around Tsê Chou. The geologic structure and the rock-formations were found to be simple and quite regular, so that in that time the accompanying sketch-map (Pig. 1) was made, and a fairly good idea of the distribution of the coal and general geologic features was obtained. The map was made by measuring a base-line about three-quarters of a mile long, triangulating for principal points over the field, and filling in the details by rapid sketches. The few elevations marked on the map were taken with an aneroid barometer. Only a few of the great number of towns and villages that are within this densely populated area are shown; and the coal-mines indicated are not the only ones within the area, but the ones where most of the following information about the coal was obtained. The value of this coal-field was first clearly set before the scientific and commercial world by Baron von Richthofen,* who made a geologic reconnaissance of Shansi in 1870. Since that time the hostile attitude of the Chinese government and people towards foreigners and their enterprises has kept the coal-fields from being developed. But the last few years of rapid change in the conditions of China have at last apparently opened a way for the exploitation of this coal-field. Finch's letter printed in the Institute Forum of the May Bulletin, I am very much in sympathy with his suggestion that the Transactions be printed in several volumes devoted separately to the various subjects covered by the Institute papers, such as " Iron and Steel," "Mining Geology," " Precious and Base Metals," etc. The advantages of this plan appear to me so great and so obvious as to far outweigh any possible objections. At a meeting of the Iron and Steel Division Committee held on June 28, 1912, I moved that the Committee recommend to the Council that papers on Iron and Steel be published in separate annual volumes. The motion was seconded and passed. Since then I have never failed to repeat my request whenever an occasion presented itself, and I welcome the opportunity offered by Mr. Finch's communication to again call the attention of those interested to an innovation which appears to me so highly desirable. This may serve as a supplement to my paper on this district (Trans. v., 473). I trust this information will not be without interest at. the present time. The recent discoveries of very rich silver-ores at Rabbit and Silver Mountains, on the same belt, have brought the district once more before the public; and a study of the facts here set forth may assist some fellow-engineer in the determination of the value of property offered for sale in this neighborhood. DEVELOPMENT of the autoradiographic method in metallurgical research has been directed mainly toward gaining higher resolution, i.e., toward being able to locate segregation of a radioactive isotope on a finer scale. In the investigation reported, the liquid emulsion autoradiographic technique' used in the biological science was adapted to the autoradiography of metals. The distribution of carbon-14 in pure iron after various treatments was studied using this technique. Amorphous carbon uniformly labelled with carbon-14 at a specific activity of 6.95 microcuries per millimole was obtained from Tracerlab Inc. Carbon-14 emits P particles having a maximum energy of 157 kev and an average energy of about 50 kev. These ßs have a maximum range of about 30 mg per cm' and a half-thickness of about 3 mg per cm2. The iron used was spectroscopically pure electrolytic iron prepared by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Unhardened nuclear track emulsion, type NTB, was kindly supplied by the Eastman Kodak Co. This emulsion contains approximately 80 pct Ag halide,

David H. Browne was born June 8, 1864; at Hollymount, County Mayo, Ireland. At the age of 16, after going through the Londonderry Academy; he came to this country, and entered the University of Michigan, where he was graduated in 1885. He began his scientific practice as chemist, under F. A. Emmerton, in the laboratory of the Joliet Steel Co., after which he served some time as chemist at the Ludington mine, Iron Mountain, Mich. But in 1888 he went back for a year to his alma mater as instructor in inorganic analysis. Those who knew him feel sure that he would have been an efficient and popular professor; but his ardent temperament could not brook the rnonotony and confinement of the class- room; and in 1899 he went to work at the Andrews and Hitchcock blast-furnaces, at Hubbard, Ohio, where he remained until 1891, when he entered as chemist the service of the newly organized Canadian Copper Co., operating in the Sudbury district, Canada. This was the beginning of his special professional life-work. For twenty-six years he devoted himself to the numerous and complex problems successively arising in connection with the metallurgical treatment of the nickel-copper ores of Sudbury. One of his notable achievements was the development of an electro-lytic process for the separation of nickel and copper in the ores referred to. This method was successfully employed for several years; but when the Canadian Copper Co. was absorbed by the International Nickel Co., the cheaper Orford process owned by the latter was substituted. . A still more permanently important piece of metallurgical progress credited to Mr. Browne was the successful firing of reverberatory smelting-furnaces with powdered coal-a measure which had been desired, dreamed and attempted by others, but which he was acknowledged as first to put in practice on a large scale. The resignation of Herbert Hoover, Director General of Relief in Europe, from his post as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Food Administration Grain Corporation, in which capacity he had served for nearly two years; and the reorganization of the corporation under the name of the United States Grain Corporation, with Julius Barnes, United States Wheat Director, as its new head, took place at the annual meeting of the stockholders, held in New York, July 1. This action on the hart of Mr. Hoover is believed to be one of the first steps in his intended withdrawal from public service upon the conclusion of the war service of the various departments of the Food Administration, or as soon as they shall have been absorbed by other agencies. The Grain Corporation has been, for the past two years, a vast collection and distribution agency. Its function has been to assist in supplying to the Allies and the American Army and Navy large quantities of wheat, wheat flout, and other foods, with very little disturbance of American prices, and with such an even control of American distribution that reserves from one crop to another have been brought down to the lowest possible compass and without the dvelopment of actual scarcity anywhere in the United States. In the year just past, it carried on all the buying and the shipping for, the Belgian Relief Commission, until the commission retired on May 1 and the Belgian Government itself undertook its own overseas supplies. During the twenty-two months of its existence the corporation had disbursed $3,500,000,000 and collected an equal amount, selling for over-seas shipments commodities valued at $1,800,000,000, at an operating expense of about $3,250,000, or one-sixth of 1 per cent. During this time it has not lost a single dollar through fire loss.

Sampling and assaying procedures were developed to obtain unbiased and reasonably accurate Au grade estimates in drill samples fm a coarse gold deposit. Gold grade comparisons were made by assaying 3 (1 assay ton) splits from each drill interval, then processing the entire reject thru a pilot plant for a blocked out zone. The result comparing the assay splits to the pilot plant results gave a ratio of 1 to 1.07. Another technique was developed to detect drill samples which has a coarse gold content by monitoring the varience. Testwork could be done on a 1 kg sample to improve the accuracy of the grade estimation if the variance was high for a drill interval.

Frequently during the processing of minerals very fine particles are generated which are difficult to recover by conventional separation techniques and are rejected with waste water from mills. A method has been evolved for the continuous recovery of such fines by allowing the suspensions to flow through a rotating cylinder. Theoretical analysis of the trajectory of particles have shown that the efficiency of separation increases with R.P.M., tube diameter, particle diameter and density. Experiments carried out with the overflow from a hydrocyclone containing particles in the size range of 2-10 microns gave a separation efficiency of 60-70% with an R.P.M. of 3500 of the rotating tube.

During 1966, crushed stone production in the United States totaled just over 811 million tons valued at almost $1.2 billion. This represented in- creases of 4 % in tonnage and 5 % in value over that for 1965. Excluding the crushed stone used for agricultural and certain industrial purposes (cement, lime and flux), crushed stone mineral aggregate production totaled 616.3 million tons valued at almost $910 million, also up roughly 4% in tonnage and 5% in value over the 1965 figures. Limestone was by far the most widely used rock variety, followed by basalt, granite and sandstone in that order. Concrete aggregate and roadstone continued as the main uses for stone, accounting for 63% of all tonnage produced in 1966 and 60% of total stone value. Sand and gravel production in 1966 increased 3% over that for 1965. Total 1966 output was just in excess of 934 million tons valued at almost $985 million as compared with 908 million tons at $957 million for the previous year. Excluding the higher valued industrial sands, 903.2 million tons of sand and gravel valued at $891.6 million were used directly as mineral aggregates, representing a 2.9% increase in tonnage and a 2.4% increase in value over 1965.

The effects of minor constituents on the malleability of nickel alloys are described. These effects are related to the atomic diameter, valence, and position on the Periodic Table. The basic methods for removal or neutralization of deleterious elements are then reviewed. Finally, practical methods for melting nickel alloys are described in detail and related to minor constituent control. L HE first malleable nickel was produced by Fleit-man in about 1870 by the addition of manganese and magnesium to the molten metal to counteract the harmful effects of sulfur. Merica and Waltenbergl explained the mechanism by which these elements accomplished the desired result. They showed that sulfur in concentrations in excess of about 0.005 pct produced films of a brittle low melting eutectic of nickel-nickel sulfide which completely surrounded the grains. When manganese was added to molten nickel it reacted with the sulfur to form manganese sulfide which precipitated as widely scattered globules in the grain boundaries. The further addition of small amounts of magnesium converted the sulfur to a very stable sulfide of magnesium which was relatively insoluble in both the liauid and solid states and therefore occurred as finely divided particles within the grains where it had relatively little detrimental effect upon the malleability of nickel or its alloys. The practice of treating nickel with manganese and magnesium came to be called "deoxidation" and was employed without appreciable modification for the commercial production of wrought nickel and high nickel alloys (in this paper—50 pct or more nickel) until about 1930 even though the results were never entirely satisfactory. At that time a more extensive study was made of the effects of minor constituents on malleability and metallurgical quality. The results, small portions of which have been published,2-4 are presented here with other pertinent data. EFFECTS OF MINOR CONSTITUENTS UPON NICKEL Systematic additions were made of 0.5 pct or less of each of most of the elements of the periodic ta- ble. It was established in this study that some minor constituents other than manganese and magnesium were extremely influential. The malleability, as evaluated by the reduction of area in tension tests, depended roughly on temperature as shown in Fig. 1. Four temperature zones are of interest; the cold malleable zone (up to about 1000° F), the red short zone from roughly 1000° to 1500' F, the hot malleable zone around 2000° F and the incipient melting zone. Most of the malleability problems are associated with the red short zone and the discussion will concern this mainly. Since the outbreak of the European war, few problems of raw-material supply have commanded more nation-wide attention than potash. It is well known that before the war the domestic production of potash was an insignificant percentage of the imports. The average annual importation of raw potash salts for several years prior to 1914 was slightly over 300,000 net tons, and of other potash manure salts about 700,000 tons. The sudden and almost total cessation of these imports created a unique and stringent situation. Methods of recovering potash from feldspar and other native mineral sources, and reclamation from hitherto waste products, have received a marked impetus. Soaring prices have been a keen incentive to research and industrial development. Although several brief articles concerning the possibilities of potash recovery have appeared in recent trade journals, it still may be a matter of some surprise to the average technical mind that potash might be reclaimed as a profitable byproduct in the manufacture of pig iron. At the present time it may be of special interest to present some data, largely of a technical nature, on this subject. A fairly thorough search of the literature reveals a number of articles concerning salts of the alkali metals in the blast furnace. Many of them deal with the theoretical rôle of alkali cyanides in the furnace. Several discuss the probable effect of the alkalies on the furnace brickwork. Two or three ambitious patents have been granted for reclaiming potash or other products from blast-furnace gas. However, we have heard nothing further as to the practical application of these patents. Little literature of importance has appeared during the last 10 years concerning alkalies in blast-furnace practice, and I have discovered no record whatsoever as to the actual sale or commercial disposal of flue dust for its potash content until this was inaugurated in our plant at Bethlehem.
