BOB VAN PELTS boyhood days in the mining atmosphere of Colorado apparently influenced him to direct hip college education first towards geology, at. Cornell College, then to mining at Michigan College of Mines and finally to graduate work in geology at the University of Chicago. He taught geology at his alma mater. Cornell College. served as geologist for the National Park Service then was on the staff of the Illinois Geological Surrey investigating and mapping mineral resources, and in 1928 because chief of the department of geology, mining, and metallurgy in the newly organized Rosenwald Industrial Museum (now the -Museum of Science and Industry,). He was made assistant director of the Museum in 1931.

As a raw material, prereduced pellets can be considered symptomatic of the quiet revolution taking place in the quality and grade of blast furnace burdens for the past decade. In 1954, the average analysis of ores from U.S. ranges in the Great Lakes area was 50.86% Fe (natural), 10.22% SiO2, and 10.90% moisture; ten years later, the average was 56.67% Fe (natural), 8.13% SiO2, and 6.17% moisture. The advance in Canada was even more pronounced in a lesser number of years. In 1957 the average product of Canadian ore-producing areas was 51.62% Fe (natural), 8.59% Si02, and 8.02% moisture; in 1964, the average grade was 59.59% Fe (natural), 6.27% SiO2, and 3.94% moisture.2 These dramatic data are testimony to the giant strides made in iron ore improvement, and the next logical step is prereduction. Prereduction can well be considered as a beneficiation step in which oxygen is the gangue. Since the ultimate objective of milling and smelting is iron metal, non-metallic constitutents in general, whether oxygen or silica, are contaminants. The past and continuing attack aimed at lowering the silica content of concentrates is succeeding. One need only thumb through the Grade Name listings of the American Iron Ore AssociationVo note that virtually all commercial pellets contain less than 8% silica, many are lower than 6%, and a few below 45%. With natural technical evolution, it is expected "many" rather than "few" will ultimately be in the last category and further mechanical concentration will have reached the point of diminishing returns. At this level, oxygen would constitute the only major diluent worthy of attack.

Discussion of the paper of FRANCIS S. PEABODY, presented at the St. Louis meeting, October, 1917, and printed in Bulletin No. 125, May, 1917, pp. 775 to 781. THE CHAIRMAN (CARL SCHOLZ, Chicago, I11.).-Coal wastage is undoubtedly one of the most prominent topics before the coal operators of the United States today. Even those who have been in the business only 25 years, like myself, know that the exhaustion of coal is something that should and must, be curbed. If it is not, before long we shall discover that the great coal resources of the country are not what we-thought they were; we have been so accustomed to work at the best and thickest coal alone, that it will be difficult for us to realize one of these clays-and that (lay is not far distant-that we are no longer the rich nation in coal that we thought we. were. In this connection I feel obliged to attach a little blame to the Geological Survey for misleading the people. There are several members ,here who assisted in that work, and I am going to ask them to defend themselves. The Geological Survey deals with coal seams of much less thickness than we could now expect to, mine, particularly with the present high wages, excepting at a prohibitive cost. The Geological Survey, in its estimates, does not discriminate between thick and thin seams, but simply estimates our resources at so many hundred thousand billion tons of coal. I believe they include seams from 15 to 18 in thick, but you all know that a vein below 3.5 or 4 ft. is not considered economical to mine at this time. R. V. NORRIS, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-Mr. Peabody has evidently been thinking almost entirely of Illinois conditions, with which I regret to say I am absolutely unfamiliar. In some West Virginia mines the total recovery at present is considerably over 90 per cent. and extraction-, as high as 97 or 98 per cent. are claimed.

During the nineteen months in which our country was actively engaged in the war, the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corpn. expanded the shipbuilding capacity of the United States from an unimportant position among the world's producers of ocean-going tonnage to first place. At the same time it increased the overseas merchant fleet of the United States from a negligible quantity to second place. The shipbuilding program has been greatly reduced since the signing of the armistice. There have been suspended or canceled contracts for 754 ships aggregating 3,797,825 deadweight tons, which would have cost $797,564,276 to complete. The cost of canceling these contracts will be about $202,853,456, and the saving effected by cancelations will approximate $594,710,820.

Computer programs applicable to coal mining have been available for some time, especially in the academic sector. However, the computer has not routinely been applied to actual mining operations. This paper discusses how a computer system was set up as an important tool in mining design and decision making. The project was completed within the allotted timeframe of two months by taking advantage of existing technology. Key points include the selection of programs to meet the specified needs of the project, conversion of the programs to be compatible with a computer of a different manufacture, simplification of the data entry process, development of procedures for using these programs, and an explanation of how the reports generated from the programs were used for mine planning and decision making.

As the first year of full-scale shiploading operations nears completion, Chile's twin ports of Chafiaral and Caldera have proved instrumental in promoting the growth of that nation's iron ore industry. Located on the Iron Coast several hundred miles below Antofagasta, the two ports boast of new conveyor shiploading facilities uniquely adapted to their coastal environment. Until recently, iron ore producers in this region of Chile have been hampered by antiquated methods of loading crushed ore on ships for transportation to foreign buyers. Use of the "truck-to-lighter- to-ship" method, which dominated heretofore, was too slow and costly to permit expansion of productive mines and exploitation of new high-grade discoveries to meet the growing world demand for such ore.

SYSTEMATIC data are presented on the relation of composition of nickel silvers to color, tarnish resistance, hardness and liquidus temperatures, for alloys containing up to 30 per cent nickel and 50 per cent zinc, further modified at certain nickel and zinc contents by 0 to 8 per cent of tin and 0 to 10 per cent of lead. Attention has also been directed, using a still more limited range of alloys, toward a study of tensile properties and such casting properties and characteristics as fluidity, shrinkage and pressure tightness. In some of these, rather broad ranges of composition are dealt with; in others, it has been expedient to focus attention on the Federal Specification 20 per cent nickel silver casting alloy, WWP-541.

0. C. RALSTON, Salt Lake City, Utah.-I have merely glanced over this paper, consequently, I am hardly in a position to discuss it intelligently. There is one thing, however, that is of interest, that is, the claim that the oil mixture which they have chosen is the best adapted to the work at hand. I would like to ask Mr. Mathewson if they still feel that that is the case-if that really does give the best grade of concentration and the best extraction for the same money, compared to any particular oil mixture which they could get. E. P. MATHEWSON, Anaconda, Mont.-We are still using that mixture, and we consider it the most economical mixture used. DAVID COLE, El Paso, Texas.-I would like to ask Mr. Ralston if there are some other mixtures that would be better? E. P. MATHEWSON.-We are open to suggestions. 0. C. RALSTON.-My own paper on oils* calls attention to the fact that certain hardwood oils, especially the tars, are now being burned or wasted. A great deal of hardwood tar is available as low as 4 or 5 c. per gallon, that being its value as fuel under the boilers. As a matter of fact, a great deal of testing has been done with only the commercial products that are as a usual ride sold on the market. Very little hardwood tar is sold on the market. In asking a great many people who have tested flotation oils, I have not heard hardwood tar mentioned very often. I think I would add to that that the hardwood tars can probably be bought in quantity comparable with the sludge acid at Anaconda, and. should contain a greater proportion of the frothing constituent, and at a price fairly commensurate with what they pay for the sludge acid. E. P. MATHEWSON.-I would like to make a correction in one statement I made that there has been no change made in the mixture. This change has been made: We found that the amount of wood creosote in treating the sand from tables was extremely small, and we tried some experiments on a large scale, dropping it out and using simply the sludge acid and sulphuric acid. We found that this gave practically as good results as wood creosote. We use wood creosote in treating the slimes. We find it necessary in that operation. Why, in an age when natural resources are available on a scale heretofore unknown, and when there is an unprecedented need for them to be developed, have would leaders been unable to find solutions which world concert the under-developed nations into developing nations? With investments in natural resources declining relative to world needs, it is necessary to reverse this senseless trend. This article is an examination of the paradox based on worldwide aspects of the mineral development field, and suggests a possible solution.

A few specific examples of the application of geology and geostatistics to the mining process are given to illustrate the progress that has been made in making the Inspiration Mine more efficient and cost effective, and a statement of the philosophy of geologic applications is offered.

Reserves of perlite rock in the western section of the United States are immense. A geological report prepared for the Union Pacific RR showed proved tonnage of over 400 million tons in southern Nevada alone. Yet the perlite industry is not large, and most of the mines are relatively small. There are indications that perlite processing, thus far largely in the hands of relatively small com¬panies, is becoming concentrated in a few large companies. For economic reasons the bulk of perlite sold in crude form has come from three or four pro¬ducers, although many individual operators have sold small quantities to limited lists of purchasers. Perlite is one of ultra-lightweight aggregates. Owing to its outstanding qualities as an aggregate, variety of uses, and ultimate economy of use, it has enjoyed considerable popularity in this country in recent years. Marked foreign interest also has been evinced in this material.

MINING operations have been carried on in the immediate area of the Elizabeth mine during periods of high copper prices since 1793, when copperas and vermillion were first won from the outcrop. Present operations started in 1942 as a war baby. Since then production has totaled 1.7 million tons of 1.8 pct Cu ore. Elizabeth mining operations are on a pyrrhotite- chalcopyrite orebody contained in a gently plunging amphibolite syncline. The oreshoot varies in width from 10 to 40 ft, and in the area under consideration is about 150 ft in vertical extent, and more than 1000 ft long. Surface pits or cuts have been worked in three areas along the outcrop, with one pit just completed and a second in full production. Present production is 24,000 tons per month, of which 6000 to 7000 tons is trucked from the open pit.

The General Electric Co., in cooperation with the Montana School of Mines and under a research grant from the Anaconda Co., is presently experimenting on a new non-explosive method of breaking rock with radio-frequency electrical power. The method is known as electrothermal forcing. It must be understood that present equipment has not been designed to perform primary blasting functions. Its conceived use will be restricted to small pieces of rock too large to pass through a chute or grizzly. However, even this use is still far in the future. Experiments to date have been limited mostly to rock smaller than 18 in.

You moderns think of your field of work as "Minerals Beneficiation"; to me it always will be "Ore Dressing." While I would like to talk with you on the future of ore dressing rather than the past, I cannot do this because I started to work in the field some 56 years ago, and my future is behind me. It is trite to remind you that then, in 1900, one out of every 30 high school graduates went on to higher education. Today, the figure is one in every three. So that, while you have a lot more men to compete with, the field of opportunity has expanded even more.

A geologist may produce for himself a surprisingly accurate photo base map and stereo coverage at low cost without the use of expensive equipment and complex photogrammetry. If care is taken and the program well thought out, good results can be expected. The only equipment necessary in this method is a small format (small negative size) camera, a few rolls of film and the appropriate filters. A light aircraft, with an opening in the bottom, is preferable so that the pictures can be taken vertically and from inside - the aircraft. The method will produce high resolution prints at large scales in the range of 1: 1200 to 1:7200.

There is mitigation for the sorrow of friends and the tragedy of sudden death when that death comes at the height of a successful career. It is not everyone's privilege to die, as has been the wish of many, in the harness—toiling, accomplishing, still necessary to the scheme of things. Nor is it everyone's privilege to leave a monument to his work. Dr. Fred Walter McNair died thus—in the midst of his work of educating, leaving along the path down the quarter century of his presidency of the Michigan College of Mines hundreds of men who, having come under his influence, have been successful in life.

A PARTIAL phase diagram for the As-Te system is given in Hansen.' The only compound reported is As2Te3, melting at 362°C. Stoichiometric quantities of reagent-grade elements were reacted in evacuated quartz and directionally cooled. The resulting ingot consisted of very thin threadlike crystals from which only very small single-crystal fragments were isolated. A powder diffraction diagram disclosed nonisomorphism with the analogous V-VI compounds insofar as these have been reported; Sb2S3, As2S3, Bi,S,, and Bi2Te3 data in the ASTM index of powder patterns, together with the single-crystal data on Sb2Se3,2 were used for the com- parison with the observed spacings. Single-crystal data confirmed the uniqueness of the As2Te3 structure. Single-crystal Weissenberg diagrams have so far yielded the following data: As2Te3 is monoclinic, space group C-m (OkO data still lacking), a = 14.4A, b = 4.05A, C = 9.92A, ß = 97". The cell volume is about 5802. The set of isomorphous ortho-rhombic cells of Sb2Se3, Sb2S3, and Bi2S, are apparently related to As,Te, in having one lattice constant close to 4.0 and with cell volumes as large as 540A8. Assuming Z = 4 for As2Te3 also, the density is calculated as 6.1 which agrees well with a roughly determined value of 6.0. A complete structure analysis is under way.

A new hydrometallurgical process has been developed to recover copper from sulfide ores. Copper is leached in a staged reactor system utilizing nitric and sulfuric acids at 105OC. Iron is removed from the pregnant liquor as a jarosite, and cathode copper is electrowon directly from the purified pregnant liquor. The spent electrolyte is recycled. Nitrogen oxides evolved from the leach are reconverted to nitric acid and are also recycled. Sulfur is rejected as So, jarosite, and gypsum. The process is highly versatile and can recover precious metals, molybdenum, and zinc when these elements are present. Continuous, integrated, semi-pilot plant operations using chalcopyrite ores demonstrated 99% copper leaching and production of cathode grade copper. Economic evaluation shows that the process is competitive with pyrometallurgical and other hydrometallurgical processes.

Illinois is rightly known as containing the coal deposit of which the first record in the United States was made. Joliet and Marquette saw "charbon de terre" along the Illinois River in 1673;1 LaSalle saw "mines de charbon" along the same stream in 1679; and Hennepin reported having "found in Several Places Some Pit-Coal" in 1682.2 In 1687 Jontel, in writing of the Illinois River country said, "along the river are coal pits, the coal whereof has been try'd and found very good."3 J. Carver reported the northern parts of the Mississippi River valley, "containing lead, copper, iron, coals, etc." in 17664 evidently referring to the Illinois country. Croghan, in the same year, saw coal along the Wabash River, near the mouth of the Vermilion in Indiana, but not far from Danville. Capt. Philip Pittman in his journey up the Mississippi in 1770 reported that "great pieces of coal are constantly found on the sand-banks, from whence it may be concluded, that there are coal-mines on the upper parts of the Mississipppi."5 This coal could only have come from the Illinois or Big Muddy Rivers. Morse, in 1798, refers to great quantities of coal on the upper branches of "the Father of Waters," and "on the Illinois River is a coal mine, which extends for half a mile along the middle of its banks."6 While, undoubtedly, some coal was used locally in various places, no records have been left of it and the first definite one is that in 1809 William Boon shipped some coal from the Big Muddy River, in Jackson County, to New Orleans, which was the first coal exported from Illinois.1 There has been considerable discussion as to this first shipment, whether it was made in 1809, 1810 or 1812. INTRODUCTION Organizations that regularly use project management services will almost certainly have their own views on the preferred systems and procedures. This chapter, therefore, describes Project Management for the personnel of groups not familiar on a regular basis with project management and deals with the basic questions that these groups can be expected to ask, such as: - What is project management? - Why is it needed? Project Management is the planning, implementation and monitoring of the Engineering, Procurement and Construction activities that are necessary to complete the project in the most economic manner. In the case of a crushing and grinding plant, completing the project would mean bringing it into full operat ion. Engineering is the design work for the purpose of producing drawings and technical specifications for Construction together with technical specifications and quantities for Procurement. Procurement is the arranging of con- tracts so that equipment, material and labour are brought as required to the construction site. Construction covers the on-site activities that bring together the components of Engineering and Procurement so as to arrive at a finished plant. Need & Cost Benefits Project Management systems are needed to allow progress and expenditures to be monitored so that any significant deviations from the plan can be identified and the appropriate corrective action taken. In this way, Project Management is able to give continual updated answers to the Owners broad questions. - What am I getting? - What will it cost? - When will it be ready? The need for Project Management is not always immediately apparent, a common belief being that the existence of the three components -Mining Company - Equipment Supplier - Construction Company - is sufficient to get the job done without a formal project management group.
