EFFECT OF ELEMENTS ON MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF IRON THE elements aluminum,1 arsenic,2 silicon,3 tin2 and vanadium,4,8 when used in relatively small amounts as alloying elements, seem to have a beneficial effect on the magnetic properties of iron-i. e., they increase the maximum permeability and decrease the coercive force-whereas there are definite indications that boron,5 carbon,6 nitrogen,7 oxygen,8' phosphorus,6 sulfur6 and titanium,4 as well as the metals of and adjacent to the ferro-magnetic group, nickel,9 cobalt,10 copper,11 and manganese,6 have a detrimental effect on these properties. The effects of calcium4 and magnesium4 are small, if any, while the effect of chromium 12 in small amounts is unknown and in large amounts is generally detrimental.

THE kaolins of the southeastern United States were known to civiliza-tion as early as the latter part of the eighteenth century-and yet the Fig. 1.-KAOLIN PRODUCTION AND IMPORTS. commercial history of Georgia kaolins may be said to begin in the year 1900. The U. S. Bureau of Mines reported for that year a production of 6885 tons of "miscellaneous" clays in Georgia. A comparison of these figures with those of 1934, when the production rose to 284,556 tons (65 per cent of the domestic production), indicates the growing economic and technologic importance of this raw material. Fig. 1 clearly shows that a part of the increase is due to a normal growth in the use of kaolinitic clays and a part is due to replacement of clays formerly imported.

INTRODUCTION This review deals with the controls exerted by unconformities on the stratigraphic and areal distribution of gold (and uranium) in Precambrian conglomerates. The relations described are drawn mainly from Precambrian basins in southern Africa, particularly the Witwatersrand Basin. The mining industry of South Africa started in earnest with the discovery of diamonds in 1866. Gold was first discovered in 1870, and in March of 1886, two out-of-luck prospectors stumbled across what was to become the world's greatest goldfield, in the vicinity of Johannesburg. George Harrison and George Walker sold their claims for a pittance and were heard of no more. The Witwatersrand goldfield has been in continuous operation since that time, some 150 mines having operated at one time or another. Deep mining technology developed here has allowed operations to proceed to depths approaching 13,000 feet. The Witwatersrand has produced some 55% of all the gold ever mined, and currently produces 60% of the world's supply, some 650,000 kg Au per year. To 1971, the Witwatersrand had produced some $32 billion of gold and $2 billion of uranium (when average prices were less than $35/oz. for Au and $10/lb. for U308). At present prices, the annual Witwatersrand production of close to 700,000 kg would be worth about $10 billion. Uranium was discovered in the Witwatersrand in 1923. Chromite, the only ore of chromium, occurs almost exclusively in mafic-ultramafic rocks and their weathering products. However, not all kinds of mafic-ultramafic rocks are favorable hosts for possible low-grade chromite deposits. For instance, chromium-bearing basalts are not favorable because they commonly contain <0.3% Cr203, and chromite is almost always less than 50 mp in diameter, if it is present at all. Chromite-bearing ultramafic rocks in stratiform and alpine complexes tend to be either ore grade (>25% chromite) or very low grade (<2% chromite); intermediate rocks are scarce. In most complexes, large tonnages exist only in the <2% chromite rocks and the composition of the chromite in those rocks may be unsuitable for metallurgical use. Some nickel laterite districts contain more than lo8 tons of material with 2.0 to 5.5% Cr203, and hence, chromium could be a byproduct of nickel in some laterite districts. To be born in the East, reared and educated in the West, to do graduate work in Germany, leading to the doctorate in metallurgy, and to wind up-for the time being at least-in the Middle West as head of one of the outstanding mining and engineering schools of the country, is a unique career. Curtis Laws Wilson, dean (and in most respects, president) of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy at Rolla, is a native of Baltimore. He came to Anaconda in 1918 and in due course was graduated from Montana School of Mines, with an exceptional record. In 1921, after experience in metallurgical research at Anaconda, he became instructor in metallurgy at his alma mater. Because of his ability as a teacher, he rose rapidly to head of the department after special work at Columbia in 1923-24. In 1927, Wilson was granted leave of absence to study physical metallurgy under the great Tammen at Goettingen, and returned with his doctorate to his work at Montana School of Mines. Although copper production established a new record, lead and zinc registered gains, and iron production held steady, the mixed trend in metallic and nonmetallic mining and generally lower prices in 1961 resulted in a net decline in the total value of domestic mineral production. According to preliminary estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the value of metals produced in this country during the year was approximately $1.9 billion, a decrease of $117 million from 1960; the value of nonmetallics was about $3.7 billion, a $14 million decrease. The following report of mining and mineral developments during 1961 is based on USBM and industry sources. Aluminum Output Dips from 1960 Record Government reports indicate that the domestic primary aluminum industry produced approximately 1,880,000 tons, equivalent to 77% of this nation&apos;s capacity. This production is about 6% below the 1960 record output of 2,014,498 tons. Shipments of primary metal ingot slightly exceeded the quantity produced.

HIGH-TEMPERATURE thermometry,, as treated in this paper, deals with the measurement of temperature in the range 100° to 550° C. The lower limit corresponds to the temperature of boiling water at normal atmospheric pressure, the upper limit is approximately the highest temperature to which mercury in a glass thermometer may be safely subjected.1 In this range., the domains of pyrometry and thermometry overlap somewhat, for high-temperature resistance thermometers and thermocouples generally classed as pyrometers are often used below 550° C. Engineering Council has been elected to membership in the Chamber of Commerce of the United States. Its representative will be Mr. Harold W. Buck, of Viele, Blackwell & Buck, Consulting Engineers, New York City, Past-president of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, his alternate being Mr. Irving E. Moultrop, of the Edison Electric Illum-inating Co., Boston, member of American Society of Mechanical Engin-eers and American Institute of Electrical Engineers. The Chamber of Commerce of the United States was formed in 1912 and now consists of more than 1100 organizations in every state of the union, in the out-lying possessions, and of all the principal American chambers of commerce abroad. One of the chief aims is to obtain the best business thought on national questions that concern business. Members of the National Chamber have the privilege of using all the facilities of the Chamber&apos;s offices in Washington when information is desired.

F. N. FLYNN, Clifton, Ariz.-I would like to ask Mr. Mathewson what percentage of his leaching liquor is wasted at this time? It has a bearing on the question in connection with the New Cornelia, and I think it is a very important question. E. P. MATHEWSON, Anaconda, Mont.-I am not sure what the percentage is now, but we don&apos;t discard the strong liquors. Something like 25 per cent. of the wash water taken out each day is sent over a special set of scrap iron tanks, and the copper recovered there. We had a little trouble at first. We did not proceed to use the sponge iron for the reason that the plant we originally contemplated was abandoned for flotation. Our original idea was to use a leaching process on all the tailings of the mill, but we found it would take a great deal of time to build a plant; and the cost of operating the plant we estimated to be about the same and the recovery the same. It was a question of time with us, and we decided to adopt flotation. That changed our plans. We now have the leaching plant, treating the tailings of the old dump, and the flotation applied to the current tailings. The sponge iron was figured for the large plant. We can get all the scrap iron necessary for the small plant-plenty from the scrap produced in the main plant of the smelter.

OBSERVERS in more than negligible number appear to believe that the achievements of engineers during the last generation have been an affliction rather than a blessing to society. Quite accurately they perceive that scientific progress and technologic advance have reduced to a fraction-often a small fraction-the amount of manual effort required to accomplish a given unit of useful work. They have seen men, as a consequence, deprived of employment in a particular industry; and this so-called technological unemployment they have denounced as inimical to the workers and consequently to the whole social order in progressive nations. To those who subscribe to this thesis the story of the Porphyry Coppers may not make palatable reading, for it is an amazing record of engineering and technologic achievement. But to those others who take the longer and broader view that economic and social progress cannot enduringly lag far behind advance in the realm of science and engineering; and that any improvement in the means and method of doing essential things eventually must make the world a better place in which to live; to these the record of the development of these great mines can- not but be a source of delight. It is an outstanding example of the advantages of mass production coupled with the fruits of scientific research and inventive genius. More, it reflects the pioneer spirit, the initiative, the self-reliance, the independence of thought and action that are traditional with the mining engineer. THE PROCESSES USED FOR THE rolling of zinc are not novel or unique in a mechanical sense. There has not been so widespread a tendency toward heavy slabs and mechanical handling, and toward 3-high and continuous mills as has taken place with steel and with some of the other nonferrous metals. Those respects in which the rolling of zinc differs from the rolling of other metals center around two facts. First, the hexagonal zinc crystal has only one plane of easy slip: namely, the basal plane. Fortunately, however, the crystal twins readily on any of the pyramidal planes, thereby creating new basal planes favorably oriented for relief of the stress which has caused twinning. Second, the recrystallization temperature of zinc is little above room temperature and for very pure grades of zinc may in fact, be at room temperature for severely strained material. The practical effect of these two characteristics of zinc will become evident in the later discussion. First, it is necessary to give some attention to the melting and casting of billets for rolling. Reverberatory furnaces are commonly used for melting. These vary over a wide range of capacity from as low as 5 tons to 100 tons or over. Low-frequency electric furnaces have also been used with satisfactory results. Arc Furnaces are, of course unsuited to a low-melting and lute-boiling metal, such as zinc. To minimize oxidation and volatilization losses in the furnace, the temperature should be kept below 500°C. With this temperature in the melting furnace, a suitable pouring temperature in the neighborhood of 460°C can he maintained at the mold when a transfer ladle is used for pouring.

The regions of New Mexico referred to are in Socorro, Grant, and Dona Ana counties, and a portion of Lincoln County, embracing in the aggregate a very large area, of most of which our knowledge is as yet very fragmentary and superficial. It is only very recently that large portions of this region have been accessible. It has been full of danger from hostile bands of wandering Apaches, whose murderous raids have slain many adventurous miners and seriously prevented developments. But this evil has now been largely abated, and in many of the mining camp of this region there is no longer any danger from this cause. SOCORRO MINES. About three and a half miles back of the old Mexican town of Socorro, on the Rio Grande, chief town of the County of Socorro, are two or more large veins of heavy spar, cutting across the fat* of Socorro Mountain in a northeast and southwest direction, and dip ping at an angle of about forty degrees into the body of the mountain. These veins are in rhyolite, and, so far as could be seen in openings on the Torrence Mine, which I examined, are without any clay parting or selvage. The average thickness of the Torrence rein may be about five feet, the thickness varying from pne or two feet to thirteen feet. Upon the cleavage planes of the heavy spar occurs, in visible patches, of a waxy Iustre and gray color, silver chloride, which gives value to the vein, from a few ounces up to one hundred and twenty ounces to the ton, averaging about forty ounces, as I

IT was my intention to have directed the attention of the members of the Institute to a complete series of rocks representing the older and middle formations represented in Pennsylvania, but time has been insufficient for the purpose, and I have been unable, in the first attempts to reduce the sections of those rocks, which I have brought with me to this meeting, to the requisite thinness necessary for exhibiting the peculiarities of their constituent minerals. The rocks represented here belong to the various horizons already mentioned, and include gneiss, ferruginous gneiss, chlorite slate, quartzites, and hydro-mica slates, limestones, dolomites, ferruginous conglomerates, quartz conglomerates, "Potomac marble" (nether member of the Mesozoic series), dolerites, and a syenite. The order in which these are named is, roughly, the order -of geographical position in a section line from southeast to northwest, commencing at the intersection of the Northern Central Railroad with the Maryland line, and ending a few miles from the town of York, and a short distance within the marginal outcrop of Mesozoic red sandstone. In such a geographical section all the rocks above mentioned would be encountered in the given order except syenite, about which a few words are to be said in a moment. (But this is far from representing the rocks in their geological sequence.) There is nothing of unusual interest to present to your notice in these slates and quartzites. The limestones were carefully searched under 450 diameters microscopic power, but they show no signs of organic remains. One section of a fine-grained Triassic sandstone contains a very beau¬tifully banded plate of quartz. But the objects of greatest interest at present are the specimens of trap. NOT all the lead in the country comes from the big operations. A member sends in this photograph of the wash-up from the "Old Timers Lead Mine," at Galena, Ill. He omitted to inclose a flow-sheet of the concentration process, which detracts somewhat from its value to the technical man, and cost figures are lacking. Perhaps he was run off the lease when his questions on milling recoveries became too searching. Still and all, according to the picture the plant ap-pears to be operating efficiently. It is reasonable to believe that the cost of electric power per ton milled is held to a low figure. We commend the proper pro-fessional stance of the gentleman on the business end of the hand jig, though we look in vain for the time honored spring board to aid him in giving the most efficient stroke.
