The value of industrial rocks and minerals produced in New Mexico in 1978 exceeded $227 million. The state ranked first in the nation in production of potash and perlite and was a leader in pumice production. Other commodities with sizable production in New Mexico include barite, caliche, clay, dimension stone, fuorspar, gypsum, humate, limestone, mica, salt, sand and gravel, scoria, and silica sand. Non-metallic resources are distributed throughout the state, but development and exploitation is concentrated in western and southeastern New Mexico. The value of industrial rocks and minerals within the state grew about 9% to more than $227 million in 1978. Continued growth, however, depends on continued demand, exploration, and development.

Coal was known in this county before 1819, but there is no record of its use before that year. In that year a furnace, the first one built in the northwestern countries, was put in blast on Bear Creek; it was built to use coke and its first blast was with this fuel, which was made in heaps, but the blast was too weak and the furnace chilled after two or three tons of iron had been made. Charcoal was then substituted, and this use of coal ceased.1 In November of the same year a resolution was adopted urging state aid for a road from Kittanning to. Hamilton, New York: "that this road will increase the trade and industry of the whole county, between Pittsburgh and the New York line; and that our soil will in consequence be better tilled, our mines of coal, of iron and of salt, be better wrought, etc."2 In 1828 an advertisement of lands situated near Freeport on the Allegheny River and contiguous to the canal nearly completed between the Kiskiminitas and Pittsburgh stated that they contained "large and never failing springs, Coal in abundance, and a great deal of Fine Timber."3 In 1830 there were said to have been 24 salt wells in this county producing 327,000 bushels of salt, chiefly on the Kiski and Allegheny Rivers. In 1837 there were a number of wells in the vicinity of Freeport. As all the salt works on the Conemaugh River, were using coal long before 1830,4 it is safe to say that a considerable tonnage of coal was used for some years in these plants. In 1837 a tract of land in Clarion Township having a new saw mill and abounding "in Stone Coal" was offered for sale,5 and also one in Toby Township having "an abundance of the best quality of iron ore and stone coal."' We give the following brief notes on early works containing some reference to mineralogy, mining, or metallurgy, to indicate the literature available to Agricola and for historical notes bearing upon the subject. References to these works in the footnotes may be most easily consulted through the personal index. GREEK AUTHORS.-Only a very limited Greek literature upon subjects allied to mining or natural science survives. The whole of the material of technical interest could be , reproduced on less than twenty of these pages. Those of most importance are : Aristotle (384-322 B.c.), Theophrastus (371-288 B.c.), Diodorus Siculus (1st Century B.c.), Strabo (64 B.c.-25 A.D.), and Dioscorides (1st Century A.D.). Aristotle, apart from occasional mineralogical or metallurgical references in De Mirabilibus, is mostly of interest as the author of the Peripatetic theory of the elements and the relation of these to the origin of stones and metals. Agricola was, to a considerable measure, a follower of this school, and their views colour much of his writings. We, however, discuss elsewhere1 at what point he departed from them. Especially in De Ortu ct Causis does he quote largely from Aristotle's Meteorologica. Physica, and De Coelo on these subjects. There is a spurious work on stones attributed to Aristotle of some interest to mineralogists. It was probably the work of some Arab early in the Middle Ages.[ ]

The Puget Sound Section met at the Arctic Club, Seattle, Wash., on Jan. 20, 1917. Sixteen members and five guests were present. Dinner having been served, the meeting was called to order. A letter from secretary of Associated Engineering Societies was read, requesting payment of this section's assessment to the quarterly budget, and upon motion it was voted that the Secretary-Treasurer be instructed to pay this assessment. It was moved and carried that this section join with the Chemical Society in a meeting. At the, close of the business meeting, Mr. Asa C. Baldwin gave an illustrated lecture on the "Alaska Boundary Survey." On Feb. 24, the Puget Sound Section again held a meeting at the Arctic Club, 16 members and three guests being present. Chester F. Lee, as member of a committee representing this section in the joint council of the Associated Engineering Societies, reported that by lots it had been decided that the term of service of said committee would be as follows: Chester F. Lee, two years; George. Watkin Evans, one year. Following adjournment of the business meeting, Prof. Joseph Daniels, of the University of Washington, delivered a very interesting lecture on "Milling Practice of The Alaska-Castineau Mining Company." THE detonation of a high-explosive charge having a metal-lined conical cavity (shaped charge) results in a fast-moving jet and a slow-moving slug.1-4 Clark and Bruckner reported the metallographic studies of a cast-iron slug. The present note describes the metallographic studies of a copper slug and discusses the principle of flow involved. The shaped charge consisted of a 5-cm diam cylinder of cast high explosive (60-40 RDX-TNT mixture) having a 45 deg and 0.16-cm thick copper cone. The copper (99.5 pct purity) had a grain size of 0.06 to 0.08 mm diam and a hardness of 65 to 75 Hv. These were fired into a deep container of water and the slugs were recovered undamaged. The longitudinal and transverse sections of the slug were polished, etched, and examined for mi-crostructural changes. Macroexamination revealed a radial grain flow inwards towards the center and a downward component of flow towards the base of the slug. Fig. 1 shows schematically the micro-structural changes observed on the longitudinal section of the slug. The region D near the apex and also along the outer surface of the slug was characterized by the presence of heavily deformed and twinned grains. In the last several decades, techniques of data collection have been rapidly evolving. Automated spectroscopic techniques in the chemical analysis of rocks for example have advanced to the point that we can analyze samples faster than we can grind them. Remote sensors of LANDSAT give us intensity measurements in four color bands of every acre of the U.S. every 19 days. Common depth point seismic instrumentation systems used at sea for surveying and networks of seismometers arrayed around the country for earthquake studies likewise are generating vast amounts of data. These along with many other earth science data generating systems have caused a veritable data explosion. How do we deal with these enormous amounts of geologic data presently being produced as well as those produced in the past, and to be produced in the future? There is an immediate need to acquire and utilize past and present basic data in order to address today's national earth science problems. Also data being collected and stored now must be compatible with future data in order for us to be able to undertake the wide spectrum of analysis that must be made in the future. This is a big order! In order to organize and to be able to analyze these data, the USGS has embarked on a wide ranging program of compatible data base construction and the development of computer technology, based on interactive computing, to facilitate resource assessments and analyses. These activities are analogous to two sides of a coin. One side deals with the logic, philosophy, and mechanics of information storage and retrieval; and the other side deals with the sensible application of computer technology to the treatment of data. Outline of the Process THE Mines Operating Co.'s plant at Park City, Utah, was designed to treat the low-grade fillings in the old stopes of the Ontario mine. These fillings carry 6 to 14 oz. of silver, 1 to 2 lb. copper, 0.01 to 0.015 oz. of gold, and a small percentage of lead and zinc. The treatment consists in mixing the crushed ore with coal dust and salt and then roasting in a new type of furnace y combustion of the contained fuel. The roasted ore is leached with an acid salt solution to dissolve the silver, gold, copper, and lead. At present these metals are precipitated together on scrap iron and the product sold to a refinery. The only new feature of importance in this scheme of treatment is the roasting process, which makes possible the chloridizing of ores without any loss of the valuable metals, and at a very low cost. History of the Development of the Process The roasting process had its beginning in connection with research work at the Utah State School of Mines. N. C. Christensen, Jr., who held one of the School of Mines' fellowships, was engaged in some experimental work on blast roasting. At the same time I was doing some work on the insoluble gold in Mercur base ores. Mr. Christensen roasted some of this base gold ore in his pot furnace, and found that when he mixed a sufficiently low percentage of fuel with the ore, it did not sinter but roasted to a leachable product. We considered this a new application of blast roasting, and proceeded to test out a large number of ores in several different types of small roasters which we constructed. This experimental work continued well into the summer of 1911.

A Reichert cone concentrator was installed in an aggregate plant circuit to recover the extremely fine "flour gold" known to exist in the deposit. The gold content of the bank- run gravels averages about 0.1 g/t-about $1.29/t, based upon $12.86/g ($400 per oz) gold. The fineness of the gold averages between 950 and 960. The Reichert cone, in conjunction with a conventional shaking table, recovers in excess of 85% of the gold. A screen analysis of the gold particles shows 44.1 % is - 74pm (-200 mesh) in size. The plant operates with a two-man crew.

SINCE the outbreak of the war we have discovered in the United States minerals of which there was no general knowledge, and which compared very favorably with anything that could be found in any foreign country. One of these was magnesite, or the carbonate of magnesium as it occurs in nature. This mineral crystallizes in the rhombohedral form, has a specific gravity of 3.00, molecular weight of 84 4, molecular volume of 28.1, and a hardness of 3.5 to 4.5.1 Had it not been for the development of the California deposits of this mineral and the discovery of immense new deposits in Stevens County, Wash., the production of steel during the war would have been more seriously handicapped than it was. Now, that the war is over, we face the possibility of competition' with the cheap Austro-Hungarian magnesite; and while that may not he so cheap as it was before the war, adequate protection should be given the producers in this country to insure the full development of our own resources. The consumption of magnesite in the United States in 1913, the year preceding the war, was 172,591 tons of calcined and 22,872 tons of crude magnesite. Less than 3 per cent. of this amount was produced at home. At the present time, practically all of the magnesite used in the United States is produced at home. Expensive plants have been constructed, extensive exploration work done, and production pushed to the utmost to supply the necessary requirements of the war. Thus a considerable industry has been built up within our borders. Some magnesite has been imported from Canada and Mexico, but the Canadian ore was of an inferior grade and could not be used satisfactorily. During the year 1918, production decreased in both the United States and Canada; the production in the United States was 225,000 tons in 1918 as against 315,000 in 1917, and in Canada 39,365 tons in 1918 as against 58,090 in 1917.

ONE of the first questions that naturally occurs to one who handles steel is," Why does steel harden ?" To answer this question the chemist and physicist have devoted much thought and experiment, and while they have enriched our store of knowledge of the nature and composition of steel, it cannot be said that they have yet solved the problem involved in its hardening. In this communication I desire to direct attention to a line of investigation yet new, in the hope that it may receive the attention of those who have the time and ability to pursue it. I refer to magnetism. There are so many parallels between the action of magnetism on iron and steel and their behavior under different processes of manipulation that it would seem as if there must be some connection between the forces at work in the different cases, if, indeed, there be not an identity of force in all of these cases. Magnetism, as we know it, may be merely the visible manifestation of forces, which may serve as a guide to lead us to an exact knowledge of the structure, the strains, and the resistances with which we have to deal in iron and steel. If a magnet be brought close to a pile of iron filings, the little pieces of iron will fly to the magnet and attach themselves to it, with their longer axes lying in the direction of the force. If molten cast iron be poured into an iron mould,-a chill,-the iron upon crystallizing will form needlelike crystals, with their long axes normal to the surfaces of the mould. If the iron is at the proper temperature and the quantity small, compared to the mass of the mould, the whole of it will be chilled, or set, in' the hard needlelike crystals
