ACCORDING to the records, Phelps Dodge made its original entry into the production of copper in the oldest copper mines of Arizona at Morenci in 1881. The ore body now being mined as the Morenci open-pit, as outlined by churn-drill holes, diamond-drill holes, and underground workings, is estimated to yield 230,000,000 tons of ore averaging 1.06 per cent copper. This development will add 2,500,000 tons of copper to the 900,000 tons already produced in the district. Some five years ago preliminary development of the ore body began, with big-scale production planned including the erection of a new treatment plant to be built near the mine. Inasmuch as the Morenci open-pit was an entirely new project this required the grading of roads, establishment of mining benches, construction of railroad grades, building of railroad tracks, erection of shops, as well as the purchase of the necessary equipment to satisfactorily and economically maintain the schedules of production forecast. Along with the preparation of the main ore body it was also desirable to mine and deliver to an experimental mill a relatively small daily tonnage of typical ore.

IN THE Lake Superior District, the air indoors must be heated continuously during eight months of the year and occasionally during the remaining months. Incident with mining in this district, therefore, there is need for heating many of the buildings connected with these operations. In addition to the mine buildings, that is, shops, engine, houses, offices, change houses, etc., such public buildings as schools, library, and theater, when close to the mines, are often supplied from the mine heating mains. At the Copper Range Company's mines, Champion, Trimountain and Baltic, the heating surface thus supplied from the mine mains is over 50,000 sq. ft. (4645 sq. m.) which requires a steam consumption, at times, of 18,000 lb. (8165 kg.) per hour, or the equivalent of a rate of over 50 tons of coal per day (were live steam used). This figure is based on a consumption of 1/3 lb. per square foot of heating surface during the coldest weather, and provided the system is not wasting steam by blowing it to the atmosphere or into the return line on account of leaky traps, which so often is the case. Under the latter conditions, steam consumptions of three to four times the above rate are not uncommon. This shows that the cost of heating is of enough importance to be given serious consideration, especially at this time of rising prices of fuel. The power and heating value of exhaust steam are appreciated by most engineers, and its application for such purposes is general. At our stamp mills, the exhaust from the stamps is used to operate low-pressure turbines, thus reducing the former water rate per horsepower developed by more than 50 per cent.

Blowing acid Bessemer converters with oxygen-steam produces steel of below 0.002 pct N2 content. This method of blowing, combined with a dephosphorizing treatment in the steel ladle, results in low-carbon steels of low nitrogen and low phosphorous (under 0.035 pet) contents, which has physical properties equivalent to open-hearth steels of similar analysis. Using a 50-50 mixture of oxygen and steam, the refinitzg rate is increased 25 pct over blowing with natural air, and scrap charge increased from 3 to 10 pet. Bottom life is normal with proper tuyere area and arrangements, fumes are decreased, yields increased, and hydrogen content is normal. THE acid Bessemer plant at the South Works of Wheeling Steel Corp., consists of two 15-ton bottom blown converters with a monthly capacity of 57,000 N.T. The product of the shop is skelp billets for continuous welded pipe and slabs for ordinary drawing and forming quality sheets. Approximately 50 pct of ingot production is regular Bessemer steel of natural Phos content and the remainder is a dephosphorized grade of steel made by a special treatment of the blown metal as it is poured into the steel ladle. The low Phos grade of steel has certain advantages over the higher Phos grade but since both grades were produced by blowing natural air, the N2 content was in the range of 0.015 pct which limited its application. In 1954 it was decided to explore the possibilities of blowing with a steam-oxygen mixture for the production of steel of both low N2 and low Phos contents. The necessary equipment was installed to operate one converter in this manner and early in 1955 an experimental run of 160 heats was made by blowing with a steam-oxygen blast and excluding natural air entirely. During this period the proper operating techniques were established, such as blast pressures, steam-oxygen mixtures, valves and instrumental control equipment, tuyere arrangement in the bottoms, blowing times and production rates, and a thorough study made of the final steel quality. Also during this experimental period the dephosphorizing practice was improved by the use of a tap hole below the lip of the vessel. This provided a clean separation of the acid converter slag and blown metal which made the dephosphorizing treatment more effective. The results of this experimental run dictated further development of this practice and a second run of 720 heats was made in 1957. The quality features and conversion cost results were in line with expectations and accordingly a 400-ton per day oxygen plant is now being installed. The plant is scheduled for completion in September of this year. This will provide sufficient oxygen to operate both vessels on steam-oxygen blast and delete natural air blowing entirely. The steel will then be below 0.002 pct N2 bar content and the dephosphorized grades will be between 0.015 and 0.040 pct Phos. STEAM-OXYGEN BLOWING The steam for the process is fed to the plant at 220 psig pressure through a 6-in. line. The high-purity oxygen is compressed to 200 psig and conducted through an 8-in. line. The oxygen from the main line is valved down to 100 psig and passed through a steam heated heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is regulated to supply oxygen at 300°F to the steam-oxygen mixing station. It is essential that the incoming oxygen be held at this temperature to avoid condensation of the steam with resulting excessive erosion of the clay tuyeres in the vessel bottom. Oxygen is admitted to the mixing chamber by a 6-in. hydraulically operated valve driven by the ratio control regulator on impulse from the flow of steam. Steam is admitted to the steam-oxygen mixture station through a 2 1/2-in. hydraulically driven valve. The ratio control regulator acts to increase or decrease oxygen input as the steam flow increases or decreases with changing positions of the Blower's control lever. The important point to note here is that steam flow always precedes the oxygen flow as a safety measure. The control valves have sufficient capacity to afford protection should blow pipe trouble develop. A 50-50 mixture for these 15-ton heats demands an oxygen flow of 3800 standard cu ft per min along with 317 lb of steam. The Blower's stations is provided with an indicating blast pressure gage, and indicating steam and oxygen flow meters. Signal and warning lights indicate the valve positions and line pressures. A control room at the real of the Blower's pulpit room houses the ratio control and pressure regulators, as well as the various meter bodies. The hand actuated wheels used to change the conditions are mounted on a panel on the front of the meter control house. The recording steam and oxygen meters used for totalizing and accounting purposes are also mounted on this panel.

In some respects, forward combustion (alias: fie-flooding, underground combustion, in-situ combustion, dry combustion) is an efficient oil recovery method. For example, its displacement efficiency (as much as 95 percent in reservoirs with high porosity and high oil saturation) is good. In its use of heat, however, forward combustion is grossly inefficient. Most of the heat generated during forward combustion is wasted. About one-fifth of the heat is picked up by the incoming air and re-used (regenerated); the remainder is left behind the combustion zone and ultimately is lost. Compressed air is expensive, and heat generated from compressed air via underground combustion is too valuable to be thrown away. Improvement is needed. Since the early 1950's, improvements in forward combustion by addition of water injection have been discussed, particularly in the patent literature, with increasing frequency.'-'' These concepts are based on the fact that relatively inexpensive water can be used to pick up much of the heat that is ordinarily wasted during forward combustion, and transport it forward to a more useful place, thereby reducing the amount of air required to move a heat front through the reservoir. Several approaches have been proposed. Merriam and Squires1 taught that a combustible (fuel) gas should be injected along with the air and water. This, however, would give at least a tendency toward reverse combustion instead of forward combustion, and would reduce the velocity of the heat bank, defeating the primary purpose of the water injection. Pelzer2 described primarily a batchwise method of forward combustion and water flooding. He advocated burning part way through a reservoir with forward combustion, then switching from air to water injection alone to push the heat toward the producing wells. Though possible, this method has serious disadvantages, the major one being that, by the time water injection is started, much of the heat has been irretrievably lost to the overlying and underlying formations. We have described what is considered a practical Combination Of Forward Combustion And Water-flooding (COFCAW).3,4 Air and water are injected simultaneously (or alternately) after a small heat bank has been formed by forward combustion. Some of the injected fluid fills up the region behind the heat bank; the rest enters the heat bank. Upon encountering heated rock, the water is converted into steam, which then flows ahead of the combustion zone and displaces much of the oil in place. Only enough air is injected to provide heat for vaporization of the water and to compensate for reservoir heat losses. Since the size of the heat bank is minimized, heat losses also are minimized. Because of more efficient oil displacement ahead of the combustion zone, fuel consumption is reduced. Although an almost continuous campaign had been carried on by various experimenters since 1885 to find a commercial process of smelting zinc by electrothermic means, no commercial success was attained in the United States. The St. Joseph Lead Co., appreciating the theoretical possibilities of such a process, such as the ability to construct units of large capacity, quality control, and the possibility of treating complex and refractory ores, decided in 1926 that the process was worthy of further investigation, and in that year, at one of its southeast Missouri plants, began the development of the electrothermic zinc-smelting process according to the invention of the late Earl C. Gaskill. Late in 1929 the process reached a stage of commercial significance, and in 1930 the erection of a modern electrothermic zinc smelter was begun, at Josephtown, Beaver County, Pa. The site is 3 miles from Monaca, which is on the main line of the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad, and a spur of the railroad has been constructed to the plant site. The site borders upon the Ohio River, which is navigable for 600 to 800-ton barges. This district was selected for the plant after an economic survey involving such questions as cost and availability of electric power, reduction fuel, transportation facilities, and the transportation charges on raw and finished materials, labor conditions, and taxes. The initial unit of the plant was designed to treat daily 120 tons of 58 per cent zinc sulphide concentrates from the company's mines in St. Lawrence County, New York. The plant equipment is housed in seven modern steel-frame buildings, and includes: Roasting and Acid Plants 3000-ton concentrate storage. Two Nichols-Herreshoff 21 ft. 6-in. diameter, 12-hearth roasters with usual cast-iron airshaft supporting chromium-alloy rabble arms and rabbles. SO2 gas purification system consisting of: One double-compartment hot-dust Cottrell precipitator. Cast-iron sinuous air-contact gas cooler.

The firing of explosive charges by electricity dates back to 1745 when a Doctor Watson is said to have used an electric spark for igniting gunpowder. His method failed in practical application because, to ignite blasting powder, heat must be applied for a period longer than the duration of an electrostatic spark; Wheatstone found that this does not exceed 1/24000 sec. The usual result, therefore, of an electrical discharge in gunpowder is to scatter the grains, without igniting them. Benjamin Franklin partly overcame this difficulty by confining the powder and crushing grains that lay in the line of discharge. In 1822, after the primary cell had been discovered by Volta, Robert Hare, professor of chemistry at the University of Philadelphia, noticed the heating of a short piece of wire placed in the circuit of a voltaic battery. Later work by Oersted, Faraday, Wheatstone, and Henley resulted in the developmcnt of the magneto blasting machines. Fulminates of gold and silver are thought to have been discovcrcd by Cornelius Drebbel, about 1600. Pepys, in his diary for November 11, 1663, recounts a conversation with Doctor Allen, who told him about aurium fulminans "of which a grain ... put in a silver spoon and fired, will give a blow like a musquett and strike a hole through the silvel spoon downward, without the least force upward.'ll This fallacious belief that explosives act downwards only is still held by many who should know better. Fulminate of mercury was discovered by Howard in 1799. J. Shaw of Philadelphia is said to have invented a fulminate-of-mercury cap in 1814; his idea was later adopted by gunmakers in England and France. The principal advantages of mercury fulminate for use in detonators are the simplicity of exploding it and the great shock developed by its explosion.

THE Cerro de Pasco Railway Co., owned and operated by the Corporation, is a common carrier whose chief functions are transportation of ore and concentrates from the mines at Cerro de Pasco to the smelter in Oroya, and haulage of coal from the coal mines at Goyllarisquisga to the coal washery at Fundicion. Connecting with the Peruvian Central Railway at Oroya, the C. de P. Railway maintains joint, daily freight and passenger service from Lima and the port of Callao to Cerro de Pasco, terminal of the C. de P. main line and gateway to the Huanuco Valley. Extending from Oroya to Cerro de Pasco the main line is a standard-gauge roadbed of 70-lb. rail, 132 km. long with a maximum compensated grade of 2.25 per cent and a curvature of 16°, climbing from an elevation of 12,272 ft. above sea level at Oroya, lowest station on the line, to 14,208 ft. at Cerro de Pasco. The highest point reached by the C. de P. is on the coal branch at Alcacocha where the rails are 14,385 ft. above the sea.

THE-report of the advisory committee to the U. S. Bureau of Mines, on the use of oxygen in metallurgy, brings to the art of steelmaking a radical change in the method of operation of the many processes of this widely diversified industry. When completed, the improvements suggested by the use of oxygen will be far-reaching and revolutionary. As to its effect upon the iron blast furnace, the use of oxygen should be as important as any of the improvements in the art of iron smelting and should take its place beside the German "Hochofen" which was the first attempt to use a shaft for preheating the stock, and beside the hot-blast stove which heated the blast before entering the furnace. The former initially produced molten iron and the latter made unbelievable economies in fuel consumption. It would seem that a discussion of this paper would be best served by following the conclusions on page 17 of the report and analyzing them seriatim. 1. (a) A decrease in costs, due to higher smelting heats is only attainable by taking full advantage of these heat units. This is affected by, adding additional ore to the burden which in turn increases production and yields a larger tonnage upon which to figure costs. These economies appear in decreased cost per ton of iron for coke and limestone consumed, and a proportionate reduction in all items entering the cost above materials. We can take no exception to these. premises. It is a well-known fact that silicon in the iron and sulfur removed" are the result of hearth temperature, other matters remaining constant. To a practical furnaceman the most satisfactory manner of controlling a furnace is by increasing the burden. It is not necessary, therefore, to consider the question of refractories, for this discussion presupposes that the temperatures in the furnaces will be kept practically where they now stand for making the various grades of iron. The same situation obtains in regard to the height of the furnace, which, as intimated, was one of the great strides forward in this art, and its abandonment at this time, is inconceivable. The shaft prepares the stock so that at each succeeding step we have exactly the proper conditions. All the stock entering the furnace is dried and preheated. The limestone is calcined by sensible heat practically at no cost, for this is sensible heat which otherwise would pass from the top with the gases. Under normal conditions, external calcination has been attempted without tangible results. Design features and operating methods of ASARCO's new unit for the continuous melting and casting of tough pitch copper at Perth Amboy are described. Preliminary studies made for determinitzg economic feasibility and design details are also presented. Cathodes are preheated with oil and melted in an electric furnace at 40-ton per hr rate, from whence the molten copper is fed simultaneously to the wire bar casting wheel and the continuous casting of cakes and billets. In the early 1950's the copper refining furnaces at ASARCO's Perth Amboy plant reached a point where major expenditures would have to be made for replacement of the furnaces and the auxiliary equipment. The problem was whether to continue with the standard reverberatory furnaces or to consider continuous melting in electric furnaces. Reverberatory furnaces have been used for years in the copper industry and for some 50 years at the Perth Amboy plant. Reverberatory melting practice, however, imposes certain restrictions. First, labor costs are high, usually requiring three shifts per day. Secondly, they operate on a batch basis, the conventional operation being a 24-hr cycle including

THIS investigation of the effect of bottom shape and life on slag volume was carried out in two Lectromelt top-charge furnaces whose rated capacity is 1000 lb per hour. Unfortunately, just as the work [ ] was started, our steel tonnage was reduced approximately one half, therefore we did not accumulate enough data from which to draw any definite conclusions. Furthermore, the life of the linings in these furnaces was greatly decreased by intermittent operation, which was a further handicap in making a study of this kind. The weight of the heats from which the data were taken varied 1200 lb but all the information was corrected to the standard weight charge for these furnaces of 4500 lb. Almost all the heats were plain carbon; a few contained a small percentage of added copper.

An incestigation has been made of the effects of heat treatment and alloy composition on the long-time stress-rupture properties and structural stability of the similar nickel-base alloys Udimet-500, Lrdimet-520, and Udimet-700. Rupture test data are presented at stresses ranging from 4 to 50 ksi at temperatures from 1450° to 1900°F for times up to 14,000 hr. Ductility response is emphasized. Optical and electron tnicroscopy were complemented by X-ray diffraction analyses of extracted phases to relate microstructural stability to the observed rupture properties. Particular attention is paid to Udimet-520 since structural characteristics of this alloy appear to vary somewhat from its sister alloys. Both cast and wrought performance of Lrdimet-500 are discussed. The computerized PHACOMP calculational technique, based on electron-vacuncy theory, is discussed and related to structural stability where appropriate. Electron microscopy and microprobe techniques were used to conduct evaluation of the oxidation characteristics of Udimet-500 exposed in air for 16,100 hr. The steady advance in strength and reliability of nickel-base superalloys continues to be one of the high points of modern metallurgy. The stress capability of these materials has increased steadily, allowing higher and higher operating temperatures in the highly sophisticated aircraft and industrial gas turbines now on the market. The attendant increase in efficiency, of course, means greatly improved power output. Gas turbines for industrial and marine use have long been designed with these objectives paramount the usual design requirements in terms of time of service being 100,000 hr. High-efficiency, long-life aircraft such as the supersonic transport require superalloy engine materials with high-strength and long-time structural stability. Thus, materials studied for and operating experience from industrial gas turbines provide a good reservoir from which technology of high value to the SST program can be drawn. This study is one such case. Three prominent nickel-base super alloys—Udimet 500, Udimet 520, and Udimet 700 were extensively evaluated for industrial gas turbine bucket use. Particular attention was directed toward structural stability as a requisite property. Within the present context, structural stability is defined as freedom from the propensity to form strength-robbing or embrittling phases such as u,p,x,or Laves, and the ability to maintain useful rupture strength and ductility throughout design life. MATERIALS The three alloys, cast Udimet 500 (U-500C), Udimet 520, and Udimet 700, were chosen for detailed evaluation based on preliminary studies which indicated that U-500C and U-520 possessed comparable rupture strength capabilities, and that U -700 had a greater strength capability but somewhat poorer ductility than wrought U-500. The nominal compositions of the three alloys, along with the compositions of the heats investigated, are presented in Table I. PROCEDURE Dimensionally rejected U-520 buckets from Special Metals Corp. heat 63370 were heat-treated using the four cycles delineated in Table 11. Cycle A was investigated to determine the effects of a shortened 1700°F primary age. Cycle B was considered a "standard" treatment. Cycle C investigated a higher solution temperature in combination with a shortened primary age, while cycle D assessed the effect of the higher solution temperature alone. These heat treatments were designed to produce optimum combinations of rupture strength and ductility through maximum y' development, the development of a y' grain boundary cushion, promotion of MC carbide degeneration reactions, and agglomeration of resultant M23CB. Since one of the premises of the evaluation of U-520 was that rupture strength would be equivalent to U-500, forged U-500 buckets from Special Metals Corp. heat 62916 were heat-treated with cycles A, B, and C to provide comparison. The heat-treated structures of U-520 and U-500 are illustrated in the 8700 times electron micrographs of Fig. l. The U-700 tested was all from 3-in.-diam hot-rolled and centerless-ground rod from Special Metals Corp. heat 2-1426. Two heat-treatment cycles were employed, E and F of Table 11. Cycle E is a standard four-step, triple-age treatment intended to provide an optimum match of strength and ductility through well-developed matrix and grain boundary y', as recommended by U-700 vendors. Treatment F is a shortened , single-age cycle which could provide a significant processing cost reduction should adequate strength and ductility be maintained. Following heat treatment, rupture specimens of U-500 and U-520 were machined from the buckets and tested. Standard rupture bars of U -700 were machined from the heat-treated rod and rupture-tested. Failed and withdrawn rupture bars were prepared and examined by optical and electron microscopy. Select specimens were electrolytically digested, and the residues analyzed for carbide and topologically close-packed phases using CrKa or CoKo radiation. Of the six different U-500C heats evaluated, five were cast by Misco Precision Casting Co. and one was cast by Haynes Stellite Co. Cast-to-size rupture bars

THE copper industry operated at high capacity throughout 1947, with no serious tie-ups in operation as was the case in 1946, when almost the entire industry was shut down by a four-month strike. Refined copper production in the United States averaged 94,250 tons for the first eleven months and deliveries to domestic consumers, including foreign copper for domestic consumption, averaged 114,000 tons per month. On April 29 the import duty of 4d per lb was suspended until March 31, 1949. Copper prices fluctuated considerably for a short time thereafter. Over the year the price of domestic electrolytic copper at refineries on the Atlantic seaboard advanced from 19.225¢ on Jan. 2 to 21.200d on Dec. 24.

In a copper converter air enters the bath in the form of turbulent jets. The interaction of these jets with the molten matte is fundamental to the converting process. In the present study, an equation is derived to describe the trajectory of a gas jet in a liquid. Calculated and experimental results for air jets injected into water are in good agreement. The trajectories of air jets in copper matte are predicted. THE air injected through the tuyeres of a Peirce-Smith copper converter emerges into the bath of molten matte in the form of a highly turbulent jet. The air jets affect a number of chemical and physical processes occurring in the converter: i) Converting Rate. It is generally recognized that the production capacity of a converter is limited by the flow of air which can be injected through the tuyeres and by the oxygen efficiency. In turn, the air flow is limited by pressure drop considerations or by the amount of splashing within the converter. ii) Oxygen Efficiency. This depends on the dispersion of the air jet in the liquid bath, and its trajectory through the bath. iii) Mixing. The jets act as mixing devices by transferring momentum energy to the bath; in this way the heat generated by the converting reactions occurring in the jets is distributed through the bath. iv) Refractory Wear. The proximity of the jets, which are centers of heat generation, to the refractories in the tuyere zone may have an important effect on refractory life. Mixing conditions in the bath will also influence refractory erosion. v) Splashing, and Accretion Build-Up. The energy of the jets is not dissipated entirely in mixing the bath. particles of liquid are carried out kith the gas above the surface of the bath in the form of liquid spouts and droplets. These result in the undesirable build-up of accretions on the converter mouth, and dust losses in the flue gas. Despite the importance of the interaction of the air jets and the matte in a converter, very few studies of the fluid dynamics of converting have been reported in the literature. Metallurgists in the USSR appear to have been more concerned with the subject than their Western counterparts. Deev et al.1 studied the interaction of an air jet with aqueous solutions in a converter model and qualitatively determined the tuyere air velocity and tuyere inclination which produced the most favorable results with respect to good mixing in the bath, and minimum splashing. Shalygin and Meyer-ovich2 also examined the air-matte physical interaction both in models and in industrial converters; they concluded that in conventional converting practice, there was no significant penetration of the air jets into the matte layer, and consequently the converting reactions occurred mainly in a zone adjacent to the tuyeres. The behavior of air jets in a converter bath, and the aerodynamic characteristics of tuyeres are discussed at length in a monograph on converting by Shalygin.3 However, the description of the phenomena occurring in the converter bath is largely qualitative. The side-blown Bessemer converter for steelmak-ing is very similar to the Peirce-Smith copper converter. Among the few investigations of the behavior of air jets in the bath of a Bessemer converter are those of Kootz and Gille4 who studied splashing in the course of an investigation on the effect of blowing conditions and converter shape on nitrogen pick-up in Bessemer steel. They found that during blowing standing waves were formed on the surface of the bath; the amplitude of the waves increased with the depth and angle of tuyere immersion until the whole bath moved backwards and forwards causing heavy splashing. Kazanstev5 used a model of a Bessemer converter to obtain correlations between the axial velocity of a gas jet and distance from the tuyere orifice and the Froude number of the jet. shalygin3 used these results to calculate the horizontal penetration of an air jet in a copper converter; the penetration was defined as the distance in which the axial jet velocity decreased to 10 pct of its initial value. However, the rising trajectory of the jet was not taken into account. In the absence of quantitative information on the fluid dynamics of converting, the design of copper converters has been based mainly on operating experience. Such experience tends to vary widely from smelter to smelter., This is reflected in Table I which is based on data compiled by Lathe and Hodnett.6 Aside from a rough, and perhaps obvious correlation between the total air flow and converter volume, Fig. 1, no pattern emerges from the data. For example, tuyere throat air velocities vary from 215 to 465 ft per sec in converters of the same size, for little apparent reason. The air jet energy input per cubic foot of converter volume, which may be taken as a measure of the amount of mixing in the converter bath, also varies greatly. A recent analysis of converter data by Milliken and Hofinger7 has also revealed unexplained variations in operating parameters. It is believed that by gaining a better understanding of the fluid dynamics of converting a more rational basis may be provided for the design of converters. In particular, it is proposed that if one takes into account the desirable criteria of a high converting rate, high oxygen efficiency and long refractory life, there should be an optimum configuration of tuyere air flow for a converter of a given diameter. The present investigation is concerned with the form and trajectory of an air jet in a converter bath. The general theory of turbulent jets has been expounded by Schlichting8 and Abramovich.9 However, most experi-

Leaching or solution mining, a relatively simple and economical process for beneficiating metallic ores, is likely to find increasing application in the treatment of low-grade ores that are impractical to mine by any other means. This process may be carried out in two different ways: 1) dump leaching, where the ore is moved from its original location to be leached at another site; and 2) In-situ leaching, where the ore is leached in place by introducing the leach solution at the top, letting it flow down through the ore under gravity, and then recovering it plus the dissolved metals it contains. Whichever leaching method is used, it is almost always necessary to break up the ore before leaching. In this paper a study is reported which indicates that rock broken by an explosion-in particular, an underground nuclear explosion-is significantly more amenable to leaching then is rock broken by other methods. These results suggest that the leaching speed and efficiency could be increased by nuclear fracturing of the ore. Not only would the leach time be shortened, but the resulting increase in strength or richness of the solutions would decrease plant installation expense as well as reduce pumping and processing costs. A considerable fund of experience has been accumulated in the course of several hundred experimental underground nuclear explosions, so that the gross results of any given nuclear explosion can now be predicted with a fair degree of confidence.' From this knowledge it seems clear that, under the proper conditions, large ore bodies can be fractured much more economically-macroscopically speaking-by nuclear explosions than by other methods. The present study concentrates on smaller scale effects that is, the cracks in the chunks of rock broken by the explosion-and shows that here too, in the microscopic domain, there are important advantages to nuclear fracturing. The intense shock produced by the very fast acting, high-brisance nuclear explosive fractures the rock in a way that should significantly improve its leachability. Experimental Procedure This study compared rocks broken by nuclear explosives with rocks produced by conventional mining, quarrying, or core drilling. The test samples, granite chunks 6 to 8 in. on a side, plus core sections, came from the area of the Hardhat*2 nuclear explosion and were taken both before and after the explosion. For comparison, several samples of quarried granite were obtained from a local gravestone monument company. The general procedure was to soak the test samples in leaching solution and then determine the extent of penetration. A standard commercial copper leaching solution was used (10 gpl Cu, 10 gpl H2SO4, 5 gpl ferric Fe, 15 gpl total Fe, pH about 1.5), to which a water-soluble penetrant dye, Zyglo 1-c, had been added. Details of the procedure were as follows: 1) Sample leached in solution containing Zyglo penetrant dye. 2) Washed with water. 3) Air-dried. 4) Cut with granite wire saw. 5) One face polished with granite monument polish. 6) Sent directly to be photographed, or heated at 110°C for 2 hr and then sent to be photographed. 7) Photographed under ultraviolet light to show crack patterns. Results After 10 days of leaching at 70-75°F, the samples were removed from the solution, washed, dried, and cut in half with a granite wire saw to study the penetration of the leach solution. Since the Zyglo dye in the leach is visible under ultraviolet light, the degree of penetration of the leach (and hence the cracks in the samples) can be studied on photographs of the crosscut samples made under ultraviolet light. The photos in [Fig. 1] show how the leach solution penetrated various representative samples. Of the 71 rock samples examined, fractures were most frequent and prominent in samples from the rubble produced by the nuclear explosion [(Fig. 1D)]. Fracturing was less apparent in shaft-mined rock [(Fig. 1B)], still less evident in drift-mined rock [(Fig. 1C)], and practically nonexistent in cored or quarried specimens [(Fig. 1A)]. The samples in [Fig. lA-C] were from the same general area as the nuclear explosion, but they were obtained before the explosion. Results of the crack studies are summarized in [Table 1]. The Zyglo-treated leach solution penetrated the test samples at the rate of about 1/2 mm during the first hour, 1 mm by the end of 4 hr, 2 to 3 mm in 12 hr, and 4 to 6 mm in 10 days, showing a progressively slower rate with time.

The awesome destructive power of known and projected weapons of war presages a new need for geologists and engineers, who may be called upon to locate vital industry underground, thereby protecting it from sky-borne destruction. The Corps of Engineers is now conducting special tests to establish design standards covering the general field of underground installations as well as surveys a of construction methods and the operational hazards connected with such plants. National planning must dictate a policy that is either tactical, where surface manufactured parts; are stored underground and during art emergency assembled, or operational with both the manufacturing and assemblage completed in subsurface plants. Both plans of operation require the use of subterranean plants. Relocation of vital plants underground will probably involve only a small percentage of the production capacity of this nation. The cost of rebuilding in new location will obviously limit its adoption
