The writer of this article has not attempted to write a technical paper; on the contrary, he has tried to express in "steel-plant English," for steel men, a viewpoint drawn from his practice and experience. It is not his thought that it shall be taken as the "last word" in the making of this class of steel, or that good rimming steel cannot be made by any other practice. The paper was written to serve as the basis of a discussion from which it is hoped much benefit may be derived. The paper deals only with rimming steel made by the open-hearth process, and with the lower carbon steels, such as sheet and tin bar, rivet stock, skelp, etc., although good rimming steel as high as 40 to 50 carbon can be made by having good open slags and giving proper attention to working and tapping temperatures. Definition of Rimmed Steel Rimmed steel is sometimes called open or effervescing steel to differentiate it from killed or partly killed steel. It is steel made by a process which permits the free escape of gases from the metal in the molds. In passing up through the metal, the gases keep it in a rolling action from the walls of the mold inward. The top of the ingot rims in as the metal chills and the walls of the ingot get thicker, the center part remaining fluid until it reaches a pasty condition when it is covered with a cast-iron cap. The Charge In making up a charge for rimming steel, clean stock of a known composition must be selected, special attention being given to the analysis of the materials. The silicon in good rimming steel must be eliminated to a trace, therefore it is advisable to have a uniform amount going into the charge. Too much silicon gives a raw melting heat from which rimming steel is unlikely to result. For this reason a charge containing not to exceed 40 per cent. pig iron and 60 per cent. scrap, with no iron ore, is preferred to the Monell type of charge in which as high as 65 to 70 per cent. pig iron is used with a proportional amount of iron ore for the removal of the excess silicon and carbon. The silicon content of pig iron varies so much from day to day in the average blast-furnace practice that there is danger of getting too much of this element in the latter mixture when

THE hard refractory borides of the transition elements of the 4th, 5th, and 6th groups of the Periodic System have been the subject of a number of recent investigations.'-' It is well known now that most of these elements form several different borides, and Kiessling8 has summarized the rules which govern to some extent the arrangements of the boron atoms in the various structures. Melting points of a few borides have been published." The systems Fe-B, Ni-B, and Co-B have been reported," but, as these borides are rather low melting, they are outside of the groups of boron compounds considered here. Brewer' has tested the stability of various borides and estimated a number of eutectic temperatures between different borides, but in no case was the complete system of a transition metal and boron investigated. The phase diagram becomes of special importance if the preparation of the borides from the elements in powdered form is considered; the lowest eutectic temperature will determine the first appearance of a liquid phase. Also, the knowledge of high temperature phases, if they exist, is important for the preparation of bodies from these borides by hot pressing or sintering. During the investigation of various metal borides,7 it was found that there were more boride phases existing in the Mo-B system than reported by Kiessling." They occur, however, only at temperatures above 1500°C and were, therefore, not found by him. This led to a study of the equilibrium diagram of the Mo-B system. ranging from 0 to 25 pct B and from room temperature to the liquidus. Part of this investigation was reported during the "Research in Progress" session at the 1952 Annual Meeting of the AIME.11 Raw Materials and Preparation of the Borides The raw materials used were commercial molybdenum and boron powder, both supplied by the Molybdenum Corp. of America. The molybdenum powder was 99+ pct pure? while the boron powder contained about 83 to 85 pct B. A large percentage of the impurities in this powder was oxygen, with the rest formed by iron, calcium, and unknown substances. The low purity of the boron used was, however, not considered detrimental to the final product, as most of the impurities evaporated at the high temperatures at which the borides were formed. The final product always had a minimum purity of 96 to 98 pct (figured as molybdenum and boron), with carbon, iron, and probably oxygen being the remaining products. Carbon is usually present as graphite. The chemical analyses always confirmed the compositions which corresponded to the crystallographic structures as determined by X-ray diffraction, and the boron content of the finished product agreed closely with that of the starting mixture; no boron was lost during the boride preparation. The chemical analysis methods employed for molybdenum and boron were previously described by Blumenthal.12,13 The powders were mixed by hand in the desired proportions, compressed at room temperature under low pressure, and then heated under hydrogen to about 1500" to 1700°C in a graphite crucible to form the borides. Usually, the three well-known borides Mo,B, MOB, and Mo,B,, which are stable at room temperatures, were prepared in this way, and all other compositions were made by mixing these borides in various ratios or by the addition of molybdenum or boron powders for the very low or very high boron contents. Preparation of two-phase compositions directly from the elemental powders was tried only occasionally to check whether equilibrium could be reached in this way. Experimental Procedures The stable borides were mixed in the desired ratios and heated under hydrogen in graphite crucibles to various temperatures. The well insulated crucibles were heated in a high frequency induction furnace. Special care was taken to obtain exact temperature measurement, which proved much more difficult than originally anticipated. It is believed that individual temperature measurements have an error of less than ±25ºC, while melting or transformation temperatures are accurate within ±50°C. The temperatures were measured with an optical pyrometer which was aimed at the closed end of a graphite tube extending down into the crucible. close to the samples. Attempts to measure directly through the hydrogen exit stack failed. The crucible arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. Heating was done at a slow rate to be sure that the temperature inside the crucible was uniform. The specimens were kept at the final temperature for about 30 min. For the investigation of high temperature phases, some samples were quenched. They were heated, without atmosphere protection, in a very small graphite crucible which could be rapidly removed from the high frequency coil, and dropped into water. These quenched samples were afterwards annealed to establish the equilibrium at lower temperatures. The melting points or the positions of the solidus and liquidus lines were determined by heating the specimens to various temperatures and examining them at room temperature for evidence of a liquid phase. These results were checked later on by thermal arrest curves, especially to determine the exact position of the eutectic temperature line. OUR mineral-land laws need revising so as to provide definite title at the outset to the mineral deposits within any definite piece of land. The laws as they now stand, especially those applicable to lodes, breed uncertainty as to rights of possession prior to patent; and to my mind this is the worst feature of all, worse even than the apex bugbear. It is now almost impossible for anybody to tell with certainty what mineral rights exist within any area that is not covered y patent, or whether any valid rights exist at all. Our system is unique in permitting individuals to appropriate and exploit mineral lands of the public domain without notice of any kind to the Federal government, and to relinquish them without any ceremony at all. The result is a clouded record that cannot be cleared' up until each claimant is put to some sort of final proof. In order to accomplish this, new Federal legislation will be required. The requirements for a mineral survey and the proceedings for patent have always been cumbersome and expensive; and perhaps out of regard for the poor claim owner, who can ill afford the outlay for that sort of thing, the law does not require him to go through it unless he chooses to do so. Consequently, every active mining district has become encumbered with tangled groups of doubtful or conflicting locations, whose rights and boundaries, when any valuable ore is found, must usually be determined by lawsuits that are as expensive and as distressing as the stakes are high. So deeply has litigation entered into our mining system that a claim whose rights have never been disputed would probably be set down offhand, y a miner of the old school, as of no value. Think of the litigation over rights of possession on the Comstock lode-12 leading companies involved in an aggregate of 245 suits within a period of less than eight years! Ambiguous local records; the chance of erroneously placed or obliterated monuments; doubt as to the sufficient performance of the statutory annual labor; uncertainty as to prior conflicting or overlapping locations; anxiety as to the changing attitude of the Department of the Interior and the Forest Service-such considerations as these make an unpatented mining claim an unclean thing in the eyes of possible investors. (written discussion).-There is no reason to doubt that the relationship between the rate of flow and the impelling force of all fluids can be expressed by a general typical equation . that takes cognizance of all relevant factors such as density, viscosity (or its reciprocal mobility) and nature of channel-walls. Most fluids that are commonly conveyed by flow in confined channels are so highly mobile that they may be considered non-viscous, hence for these fluids the factor of viscosity does not need to appear in the equation. Water is the outstanding example of this class of fluids and its dynamic behavior has been so thoroughly investigated that proven formulas pertaining thereto, be they rational or empirical, would naturally serve as prototypes for the other non-viscous fluids. As non-viscous fluids can be classed all gases and vapors, most unsaturated aqueous solutions, gasoline, alcohol, etc. Viscous fluids comprise those that have a sluggish flow such as most. oils, tar, molasses, etc., the high viscosity of which is due to shearing resistance between molecules; a force that must be taken into account in figuring the flow of fluids of this class.

THERE is a large body of evidence'" indicating that solidification during the liquid-solid transition is usually induced by heterogeneities present in the liquid. By dispersing liquid metals into small droplets, the impurities responsible for catalyzing solidification are isolated within a small number of these droplets. The effect of the foreign body therefore is restricted to a single drop by this technique. Thus upon cooling below the melting temperature, solidification is initiated by homogeneous nucleation in the majority of the droplets that do not contain impurities. In the case of solidification of liquid metals, the activation energy for nucleation is so great that its rate changes by orders of magnitude for a change in temperature of only several degrees centigrade.' Effectively homogeneous nucleation occurs at a critical temperature upon continuous cooling. Thus by microscopic observation of single particles during cooling, a temperature at which the rate of homogeneous nucleation becomes sensible can be determined.3 since at the temperatures at which nucleation occurs in the absence of impurities the rate of crystal growth is extremely rapid, the temperature at which the entire particle solidifies is very nearly the temperature at which the nucleation of the solidification occurs. Thus for liquids that freeze at high temperatures the onset of nucleation can be established by simply observing the temperature at which the marked heat evolution and increase in brightness of the particle occur. For liquids that freeze at lower temperatures the onset of nucleation can be determined by a rumpling and change in shape of the particle resulting from its solidification. The microscopic technique for observing the solidification of small particles has already been described." In earlier papers the nucleation of solidification of pure metals 5,6 and of alloy systems7 showing complete liquid and solid solubility have been described. In the present paper, the observations are extended to a simple eutectic system (Pb-Sn) where the possibility of the formation of two solid phases exists. Metals for the investigation were obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. in the form of pure lead and pure tin, 99.8 and 99.9 pct purity, respectively. An ingot of each of the pure metals was made into shot by heating the metals at a temperature about 50 °C in excess of the melting point and pouring the liquid slowly into a container of water at 15°C. Samples of the shotted pure metals were weighed out to make alloys containing 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 atomic pct Pb. Samples of each alloy were then melted in separate beakers. Each melt was poured through a pyrex funnel into a cylindrical mold (% in. ID). The casting solidified in 10 to 20 sec. The inside of the mold as well as the funnel through which the metal was poured were coated with graphite to eliminate adherence of the metal. Analyses were performed on some of the compositions and are given in Table I. The compositions also were checked for these samples and for those that were not analyzed by determining the spread between the liquidus and the solidus upon melting the small metal particles. These measurements agreed as well with the nominal compositions as the analyses listed above. Results The results of the supercooling experiments for the several alloys are summarized in Table II and plotted on the constitution diagram in Fig. 1. Data for the pure lead and pure tin were taken from earlier investigations. The values for the maximum supercooling of the several alloys are the average of several determinations on a number of drops of each alloy. The maximum value in any determination was within about 2 pct of the average. For the alloys containing from 20 to 60 atomic pct Sn, inclusive, two marked changes of the surface structure were observed upon cooling. At the higher temperature, after the first appearance of the solid phase it continued to grow slowly at a constant temperature and then stopped. At the lower temperature the alteration of surface structure was abrupt. For the alloys containing from 70 to 95 atomic pct Sn, inclusive, an abrupt change in surface structure was observed at a single critical temperature.

BRASS is an alloy of copper and zinc. The brasses (using this term to denote all useful proportions of the two constituents) are the most valuable and widely employed of all [ ] nonferrous alloys, because of their high resistance to ordinary corrosive agencies and the very wide range of properties that may be imparted to them by variations in the proportions of the constituents and by variations in mechanical treatment and heat-treatment. Fig. I shows the normal physical properties, as determined by standard tensile tests, of the series when in the annealed condition. Fig. 2 shows the effect of varying amounts of cold-working on an almost pure brass containing 70 per cent copper and 30 per cent zinc. Fig. 3 shows the effect of annealing at various temperatures on the same alloy. This effect is somewhat modi- [ ] fied by the degree of cold-working to which a brass has been subjected, as shown by Fig. 4. A fourth test, which is empirical, has been found useful because of its simplicity the hot hammer test. Samples 1/2 in. in diameter and 3/4 in. long are placed in a suitable furnace. These are withdrawn one at a time at successively higher temperatures and are subjected to the blow of a drop hammer weighing 50 lb. with a drop of 4 ft. THE production of metal-working tools has been revolutionized within the last 18 years, since the invention by Taylor and White of a process of heat-treating steel tools, which resulted in increasing their cutting capacity several fold over what it had been before. This was an exceedingly important invention, although it consisted principally, in establishing this fact overheating when it accidentally, occurred in the ordinary:-process of forging, spoiled the steel, but if carried very much farther or to-a point that would have been considered absolutely ruinous to the steel under the old ideas, it resulted in imparting a cutting power several times as: high as had ever been obtainable before. The quality that gives the steel this power eventually received the name of "red hardness." This name originated in the fact that tools possessing this property retain their resistance to deformation even when subjected to, such severe cutting stresses that the metal just back of the point is heated, under certain conditions, to a visible red. It is interesting in this connection to note that the edge of the tool itself does not become red because it is continually cooled by the fresh metal into which it is forced. The result of Taylor and White's invention was an intensive study, of tool steels all over the world and, although there was-great diversity of analysis in the high-speed steels of the early days, these steels today generally have an approximately similar composition, the principal constituents being froth 15 to 20 per cent. of tungsten, from 4 to 6 percent. of chromium, from 1 to 2 per cent. of vanadium, and from 0.50 to 1 per cent. of carbon. It is probably safe to say that standard brands of such high-speed steels will do from five to ten times as much work in a given time as the carbon steels, and even the Musket steels, which were the sole dependence up to the beginning of this century, when the Taylor-White process was discovered. With the increasing cost of labor, it is not surprising that these steels have driven froth the market, for all but limited purposes, the older types of steel.

WHEN, after years of troublous experiences in roasting sulfide ores with heavy dust and fume losses resulting from the equipment and methods first available, there appeared on the scene of metallurgy that revolutionary process known as sintering, it was felt that at last there had been found the ideal method for preparing sulfide ores for blastfurnace reduction. Not only were the sulfides roasted but also the fine oxidized ores were bound together with them in strong porous cellular masses which were in the best possible condition for reduction. With the experiences gained in the manipulation of the Huntington-Heberlein, Carmichael-Bradford, and Dwight & Lloyd processes there developed a refinement of detail which brought the whole plan of roasting by sintering to a high plane of perfection. But that metallurgy is never stationary is revealed by the fact that changes in milling practice, particularly the development of flotation, have introduced a new set of problems in sintering itself. Inasmuch as it is felt that these problems have not yet been solved in an entirely satisfactory manner this paper is written to record the present practice of the Salt Lake Valley smelters with the hope that there will be brought forth such discussios as may perhaps lead to still better practice. By far the greater proportion of the sulfides smelted today are flotation concentrates. Usually they are high grade, sometimes as high as 70 per cent. and more in lead. They are extremely fine, many mills grinding the ore so that from 60 to 80 per cent. will pass through screens of 200 mesh. The physical condition in which many of these concentrates reach the smelters is disconcerting to the metallurgists. Some are of about the consistency of putty. Others are of a sticky, slimy nature. Others again, dried to the limit, are veritable powders. Remembering that the down-draft sintering charge for the best results must be porous enough to let air be drawn through it reasonably well, must be thoroughly mixed, and must have some coarse material in it to segregate out and form a layer on the grates, it will be understood that the advent of this extremely fine material has made necessary still further elaboration in the equipment and processes of preparing sulfides for the blast furnaces,

Considerable attention has been directed in recent years to methods of electric prospecting other than the conventional direct-current techniques. It has been extensively recognized that electrical data of a more general nature than that possible by direct-current methods might be useful in geophysical studies. To this end, a number of different types of electric currents have been employed, such as single-frequency alternating currents, square-topped periodic current waves,4 periodic surges of a less specific nature,s and suddenly applied direct current.1,2 Yet, to the author's knowledge, little analysis of these different types of driving currents has been made from the standpoint of network theory to determine just what typc of currents would give the most useful data, and, most important of all, to determine the relation of the data taken by one method to those of another. Without touching on the actual theoretical problem of how currents flow in the earth under specified boundary conditions, some very useful information can be obtained from the study of the fundamental integral equations of electrical networks, throwing light on the problem not ordinarily appreciated by the field worker. Some manipulation of the standard network equations will be made, with the sole purpose in mind of developing expressions leading to practical results. Suppose that four points in the earth have been located and it is wished to obtain the most useful type of electrical data by inserting current into two of them and measuring the potential developed between the other two. The first problem that arises is that of which pair of the four shall be chosen as current grounds. In the direct-current case, where only steady potentials are measured, the selection is of little consequence, but as soon as currents varying with time are used at the current grounds, a new effeet arises. The fact that a varying current is flowing in the current-carrying conductor between the current grounds means that magnetic and electric fields varying with time will be produced

The binary alloy systems, Y-Ti, Y-Zr, and Y-Hf, have been investigated throughout their entire composition regions. There is no compound formation in any of the systems, and each system is characterized by a single eutectic reaction. The eutectic compositions and temperatures are as follows: A eutectoid reaction pct Y and 870°C occurs in the Y-Ti system, whereas a peritectoid reaction,: pct Y and 880°C occurs in the Y-Zr system. Peri-tectic-type reactions at temperatures above the eutectic levels are postulated for the yttrium and hafnium transfovmations. The development of the technology of yttrium has been given considerable attention during the past few years, and studies of binary phase equilibria have, of course, taken a prominent position in this development. In many respects yttrium, in the third group of metals of the periodic table, is similar to the adjacent group of metals, titanium, zirconium, and hafnium, and the knowledge of the phase relationships of yttrium with these metals is basic to their technology. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials. The metals for this investigation were supplied by the General Electric Co., Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion Department. The yttrium was in the form of an arc-melted ingot, and the other metals were in the form of high-purity, iodide-Process crystal bar. Table I lists the purities of these materials. Alloy Preparation. Melting was done by conventional techniques in a nonconsumable electrode arc furnace in an atmosphere of purified argon. Melting conditions for each binary system were the same. Each alloy button was inverted and remelted several times to assure homogeneity. Accurate weights of the charges and resultant alloy buttons were obtained to indicate deviations from intended compositions. No chemical analyses were obtained since melting weight losses were consistently in the range of 0.1 to 0.2 pct of the total weight. 10- or 20-g buttons for each 5.0 wt pct composition increment were melted to survey the three individual alloy systems. Additional alloys differing in composition by 1.0 or 0.1 wt pct increments were also melted to study selected regions of the systems. Metallograpllic Techniques. Standard metallo-graphic techniques were followed for mounting and rough grinding. Preliminary polishing was accomplished using 6-u diamond paste as an abrasive on a Metcloth Lap. Final polishing was done on a Microcloth-covered wheel using 1-u diamond abrasive paste. Purified kerosene was used as a lubricant for both polishing stages. • sothermal- Annealing. Alloys were sectioned for as-cast structlure examinations and then homogenized in preparation for isothermal-annealing treatments. Homo{:enization was accomplished by cold pressing the alloy buttons followed by 72-hr anneals at 1100c. The alloys were encapsulated in Vycor or quartz for the homogenization treatments or for isothermal anneals. Resistance-wound or resistance-element tube furnaces were used for the annealing treatments. The homogenized alloy buttons were cold rolled until cracking occurred or until a -in. specimen thickness was obtained. Small -in. square) specimens for the isothermal anneals were then sawed from the alloys. Each specimen was wrapped in tantalum foil before being sealed in the capsule. Temperatures during the anneals were controlled The time at temperature necessary to equilibrate the structures during the anneals was determined for each alloy system by holding triplicate specimens of alloys at a constant temperature for three different periotls. The specimens were quenched and examined microscopically to determine the number and amounts of phases present in the micro-structure as a function of time. Melting Studies. Eutectic temperatures of the three alloy systems were established from the results of incipient-melting studies conducted on as-cast alloys. Specimens to be melted were suspended on a tungsten wire inside a graphite cylinder placed in a glass vacuum chamber. An optical pyrometer was used to follow the temperature of the specimen as it was inductively heated in a high vacuum. The temperatures were corrected for emissivity losses by standardizing the pyrometer with known-melting-point metals. Accuracy of the temperature measurements is estimated to be + 10°C. The melting point of the yttrium was determined to be 1550°C by this technique. The invariant-temperature levels were also checked by an anneal-quench technique. The purpose of this study was to develop a method for predicting the time delay created by metering a fluid through an annular restriction with translational motion of the boundaries. This time delay is utilized to control the opening of valves in various down-hole oilfield tools and forms the basis for the "hydraulic jar". The hydraulic jar is used to give upward impact forces to tubing or other tools that become lodged down-hole. The design of these jars has primarily been by trial and error; varying the clearances, fluid viscosities and dimensions of the jar until a satisfactory time delay was achieved. Obviously, a better understanding of the fluid flow characteristics is required to produce designs that are satisfactory and to eliminate the trial-and-error approach. Previous studies of flow in annular spaces were based on constant length of the annular restriction. Any motion of the boundaries of the annular space was confined to a rotational motion, like that encountered in journal bearing design. Consideration of the effect of translational motion of one boundary with respect to the other was necessary in applying this previous work to a time delay device. A prediction method was developed that takes into account this relative translational motion. Equations were developed to predict the relative velocity, the flow rate, and the time delay in a concentric annular space. The effect of eccentricity also was included. Experimental data were obtained and closely correlated with the prediction method. This correlation is presented graphically in terms of predicted and actual relative velocities for various annular clearances and pressure drops. This extension provides design equations which predict the performance of the hydraulic jar, thereby eliminating trial-and-error solutions and reducing the development time required for satisfactory designs. INTRODUCTION The design of down-hole oilfield tools which use hydraulic delay systems based on flow through annular orifices with relative motion of the boundaries is usually a trial-and-error process. The annular clearances, fluid viscosities and dimensions of the mechanisms were varied until satisfactory delay times were obtained. The development of these tools has been expensive, and a better understanding of the characteristics of annular flow with relative motion of the boundaries could result in superior and less expensive designs. The purpose of this investigation was to provide a method of predicting the performance of down-hole tools which use annular flow and, in particular, the performance of a down-hole tool known as the "hydraulic jar". The hydraulic jar is used to free pipe, packers and other tools that become lodged down-hole. The jar, located in the tubing string between the surface and the object which is stuck, releases the object though the repeated application of upward impact blows. The jar is basically a slip joint that is restrained in a collapsed condition until the desired tubing tension has been developed. The slip joint is then released and accelerates rapidly until it shoulders, delivering an impact blow or jar to the object. The delay obtained by metering the fluid through the annulus formed by the jar valve and housing provides the time delay necessary to stretch and apply tension to the tubing or pipe. Fig. 1A gives a schematic diagram of the hydraulic jar and brief details of its operation. The metering of the hydraulic jar begins when the tension force being applied to the jar by the pipe creates a pressure differential across the valve that is approximately equal to the force divided by the displacement area of the valve. CONSIDERABLE attention has been directed in recent years to methods of electric prospecting other than the conventional direct-current tech-niques. It has been extensively recognized that electrical data of a more general nature than that possible by direct-current methods might be useful in geophysical studies. To this end, a number of different types of electric currents have been employed, such as single-frequency alter-nating currents, square-topped periodic current waves,4 periodic surges of a less specific nature,8 and suddenly applied direct current.1,2 Yet, to the author's knowledge, little analysis of these different types of driving currents has been made from the standpoint of network theory to determine just what type of currents would give the most useful data, and, most important of all, to determine the relation of the data taken by one method to those of another. Without touching on the actual theoretical problem of how currents flow in the earth under specified boundary conditions, some very useful information can be obtained from the study of the fundamental integral equations of electrical networks, throwing light on the problem not ordinarily appreciated by the field worker. Some manipulation of the standard network equations will be made, with the sole purpose in mind of developing expressions leading to practical results. Suppose that four points in the earth have been located and it is wished to obtain the most useful type of electrical data by inserting current into two of them and measuring the potential developed between the other two. The first problem that arises is that of which pair of the four shall be chosen as current grounds. In the direct-current case, where only steady potentials are measured, the selection is of little consequence, but as soon as currents varying with time are used at the current grounds, a new effect arises. EAKLE, Berkeley, Cal.-At the old Morning Star mine in Alpine County, where large masses of enargite were found some years ago, I looked particularly for evidences of replacement of pyrite by the enargite. While I have not made a particular study of any of the specimens, I judge that the pyrite and enargite were precipitated together. They were both primarily in those rocks. Of course, by using Mr. Graton's method of determination we might possibly find a situation somewhat different, but I should say that the enargite is not replacing the pyrite, but was simply precipitated at the same time. The bodies occurred there within 50 ft. of the surface, so it is probably not a case of secondary enrichment. H. W. TOLMAN, Stanford University, Cal.-You can find practically all the evidences we have discovered in the microscopic study of ores. You can find all stages in the process of replacement of earlier minerals, especially bornite, by chalcocite, from a stage, in which the process has but just started with only occasional fragments of chalcocite set in bornite, to a stage where remnants of bornite are set in chalcocite. The replacement may take place along the cleavage lines or along the crystallographic directions of the earlier mineral, or it may take place irregularly. In one type of replacement you may find in one spot a few cross-cutting veins, and in another spot the latter may be so enlarged that there remain only a few individual specks of the replaced mineral.

The character of the Wisconsin orebodies must be clearly understood to appreciate the difficulties encountered in sampling and estimating them. Unlike the western vein deposits, they do not lie between regular walls, but form large, often highly irregular bodies, on a single floor in the so-called Galena limestone. The bottom of the ore is nearly always on the clay bed (a flat generally well-defined clay seam a few inches thick) which marks the junction of the base of the Galena lime and the top of the next formation, the Trenton lime. Above the clay bed, the orebodies make the unique pitch and flat formation described by Chamberlin.' Theoretically, we should find two pitches, one on either side of the top crevice, diverging as they go down, with the final flats a considerable distance apart on the clay bed. The area between, known locally as core ground, should thus constitute a single defined orebody, with the richer portions near the pitches and the leaner portion in the center of the core. Practically, we find few examples of this perfect orebody. Almost invariably one pitch is better defined than the other, and often the opposite pitch is marked only by a faint line of fracture showing stronger mineralization than the wall rock, or it may be totally lacking. But with an orebody of any size or richness, at least one strong pitch usually tends to follow an east-west trend, or a quartering course. Late mining developments in the rich New Diggings field indicate that these pitches often assume a horseshoe or crescent shape, the richer ore being in the heart of the crescent and the pitches showing less mineralization as they extend outwards. In the northern end of the field, on the contrary, the pitches maintain generally a consistent direction, and have been mined for thousands of feet from the shaft. The length of the orebody may be several thousand feet, the height varying from 10 to 60 ft. and the width from 60 to 250 ft. In fact, on the core side, there is no definite end to the ore. The mineralization simply gets thinner and thinner, and the limit of working depends on the cost sheet and the profit from the recovery.

At Elkol, Wyo., about 80 miles northeast of Ogden, Utah, the Kemmerer Coal Co. and the Utah Power and Light Co. are involved in a joint venture that will soon see 1 million tons of coal going "out by wire" to Ogden. Kemmerer, owner of a multi-seam strip mine, and the utility, now building a steam power plant adjacent to the mine site, expect to begin initial power generation by February 1963. Although capable of producing only 150,000 kw at that time, this plant is expected to be ultimately enlarged to 500,000-kw capacity which will require about 2 million tons of coal annually. The deposit consists of more than 30 seams of coal, usually varying in thickness from 2 to 40 ft, and separated by beds of sandstones and shales. In certain areas the aggregate thickness of all the coal seams measures 300 ft. The thickest and most spectacular of these seams is the lowest one, referred to as the No. 1 seam, which is 118 ft thick in some places.

WITHIN the last three years, aerial mapping has made wonderful progress. Its three sources of development in North America may be enumerated as follows: (1) The work of the U. S. Army Air. Service and Corps of Engineers at the McCook Experimental Field, Dayton, Ohio. This is generally regarded as the backbone of this class of endeavor in the United States. (2) In Canada, a great deal has been accomplished in a practical way by methods that have not even been tried out in the United States. Under the leadership of the late Doctor Deville, the Dominion Land Surveyors have turned out reconnaissance maps of large areas at very, small cost. (3) Private capital has contributed a great deal toward development of aerial mapping in a practical way in the United States. Prominent in this regard stands the Fairchild Aerial Surveys, Inc. which has spent large sums in research and development work, especially in the construction of aerial cameras. Its camera is, at present, the official camera of the U. S. Army and Navy Air Services, also, of the Canadian and Brazilian governments. Aerial photographic surveying is a flexible process and adapted to a variety of uses. To date, it has proved. of direct practical value for engineering projects such as reservoir and power transmission surveys, railroad location, drainage, harbor front studies; also, for many commercial purposes, tax assessment, city planning, forest surveys, and lawsuits. In a few instances, aerial photographs have been used successfully by geologists as base maps on which to record field observations, thereby dispensing with pacing and compass surveys. There is reason to believe that, eventually, the aerial map will find wide application in the work of geologists. The reason for advancing this opinion is that aerial maps have, in other fields, proved more complete as regards detail than maps made by standard processes of surveying and drafting, and often are more accurate than the latter. At the present time, five distinct uses are being made of aerial photographs: There is the "oblique" photograph taken at an angle with the horizon; it is used extensively for illustrations in newspapers, magazines, and advertisements. Also, for reconnaissance purposes, it has been found of great practical value. For illustrating reports of engineers and geologists, it offers many obvious advantages. In the Canadian Surveys, maps have been compiled from oblique photographs.

H. H. Kellogg—There is one point that the author has failed to emphasize sufficiently in his paper. What is commonly called the equilibrium contact-angle (the author's "maximum contact-angle") can have only one value on a smooth, flat, homogeneous surface under a given set of conditions. The equilibrium contact-angle is defined, for such a system, as the angle between the solid-liquid and liquid-gas interfaces, measured through the liquid. The value of the equilibrium contact-angle is uniquely determined by the value of the interfacial energies of the three intersecting interfaces and is independent of other forces in the system. When the liquid-gas interface intersects the solid at an edge—as was the case for all the experiments reported in this paper—the orientation of the solid-liquid interface is indeterminate or varies through 90" for a right-angle edge. Mr. Morris has called the angle between the horizontal and the liquid-gas interface for this edge condition a "static contact-angle." I feel that this term is unnecessarily misleading. In the first place, "static contact-angle" sounds too much like "equilibrium contact-angle." In the second place, the magnitude of the "static contact-angle," which I would prefer to call the "supporting angle," is determined by the forces in the system other than those derived from the interfacial energies, hence "contact angle" is misleading. If Mr. Morris had said that the "supporting-angle" is variable and depends on the weight of the particle and size of the bubble and that it has a maximum possible value equal to the equilibrium contact-angle, his discussion would have been more accurate. T. M. Morris (author's reply)—Mr. Kellogg puts forth a reasonable criticism of some of the terminology used in the paper. I agree that the term "static contact angle" may be misleading. Substitution of the term "supporting angle" or "vector angle" may be more suitable. F. X. Tartaron—In this paper the author presents a very interesting mathematical development of the forces present when a mineral particle adheres to an air bubble. Excellent concordance is obtained between mathematical formulation and experimental results. It is the writer's understanding that when the mineral surface presented to an air bubble is greater than the area of contact, the maximum contact angle is obtained. However, this contact angle represents distortion of the bubble, the normal shape of which is spherical or in cross-section, circular. This distortion produces a force that acts in opposition to the force of adhesion between the bubble and particle. Hence, at maximum contact angle, the force of adhesion between bubble and particle is at a minimum for static conditions. However, when the size of bubble is increased, the size of particle remaining the same (and all other conditions remaining the same), the contact angle decreases, the distortion of the bubble decreases and the force in opposition to adherence of bubble and particle also decreases. Thus, there is stronger attachment between bubble and particle. When this situation is applied to actual flotation conditions, it is doubtful that it has any significance. The reason is that the bubbles are normally so much larger than the particles, that in substantially all cases, it is probable that negligible distortion of the bubble takes place. In table IV, the author makes computations for bubbles from 0.50 to 2 mm diam. This is from 0.02 in. to 0.08 in. Certainly the bubbles generated in a flotation machine are far larger than this. The surfaces of the author's bubbles range from 0.79 to 12.6 sq mm. The area of contact of the glass rod (0.15 mm diam) is 0.017 sq mm. Thus, ratio of bubble surface to mineral area of contact ranges from 47 to 741 in round numbers. If we take a %-in. diam bubble and a 65-mesh (0.208 mm) particle of cubical shape, the ratio of bubble surface to mineral area of contact is 2931. Mineral particles do not readily become attached to air bubbles. Taggart has shown that in pneumatic flotation machines collector-coated particles are only temporarily attached to bubbles. They keep falling off and down in the froth but at a delayed rate as compared with gangue. Spedden and Hannan's motion pictures confirm the difficulty of attaching particles to air bubbles.
