THE increase in the production of iron has been accompanied by a growing demand for an improved quality, and more especially at the present time, in the manufacture of Bessemer steel, which is rapidly becoming an important branch of industry. This has led the makers of pig iron to a careful investigation of the composition of the materials from which their metal is produced, the inquiry being greatly assisted by a cordial alliance of science and practice. Formerly, chemical science was held in abeyance, or admitted in a hesitating experimental way ; but now it is received as a valuable auxiliary, and its decisions are accepted as final and conclusive. It is called on to assist the iron-maker in determining the quality of his stock, and to detect the presence of injurious elements in his fuel, ores, flux, or iron. The object of this paper is to submit the method now in use at the furnaces of the Kemble Coal and Iron Company in the Broad Top coal and iron region, for removing, by a process of crushing and washing, slate and other impurities from coal, designed, when coked, for furnace fuel. It is not contemplated to claim very advanced progress in this work, believing that it is susceptible of improvement, but to show that some progress has been made in a comparatively new field, and it is hoped in the right direction, since coke is probably destined to become the principal fuel in the metallurgy of iron. The Broad Top coal region occupies an isolated geographical position, standing 25 miles east from the Alleghany field. It is associated with the latter by the structure of its coal, and more closely with the Cumberland field by a similarity in the quality of coal.

In connection with the work of testing structural materials for the use of the U. S. government at the laboratories of the technologic branch of the U. S. Geological Survey at St. Louis, Mo., from September, 1904, to April, 1909, and since then at Pittsburg, Pa., large quantities of sand, gravel, and crushed stone have been needed from time to time, besides samples of building-stone, clays, and other quarry-products. In many instances it has been necessary to obtain single samples of sand, gravel, or crushed stone in lots of a car-load or more. For obvious reasons all these collections have had to be made by a representative of the Survey. As the work progressed it was found essential that numerous geologic data should be gathered regarding the materials collected, in order that they might be properly classified as to kind of material, source, geologic age, etc., and that they might be rated according to quantity available, accessibility to transportation facilities, approximate costs, suitability for special purposes, etc., and that notes might be taken regarding undeveloped deposits of possible value. Furthermore, it mas desired that the selection of materials for tests should be made broadly, so as to cover, first, the representative types of material, and later, if possible, the typical materials of the more important building-centers in the United States. In order to insure a certain degree of uniformity in this work and economy of effort and expense, it was decided that as much of the sampling as was practicable should be done by a member of the geologic branch, whose regular field-trips could be combined conveniently with those necessary for procuring materials for the laboratory. During parts of the last three years 1 have been engaged in field-work of this sort.

An instrument capable of measuring subsurface flow rates is described. The instrument is self-contained and may be run on piano wire line. It detects flow by means of an impeller suspended between two torsion wires. The force of the well fluid striking the impeller causes the impeller to rotate, exerting a torsional force to the wires. This force is determined by recording the angle of rotation of the impeller on film using a battery-driven, clock-controlled camera. The impeller is sensitive to flow in either direction and the same instrument can be used to measure injection as well as production rates. Changes in direction of flow, such as might be caused by thief zones, are measurable and are indicated by a reversal of the direction of rotation of the impeller. Adjustment of the sensitivity of the instrument to measure a wide range of flow rates is accomplished by the use of different size torsion wires. An umbrella-type fluid trap, which contacts the casing or wellbore, diverts the flow through the flow tube. The fluid trap remains closed while rurrning in the hole and can be opened at any point in the well. The instrument with the trap closed is 1 3/4 in. OD and may be run through 2 in. tubing. Successful flow profiles have been made on wells with flow rates ranging from 60 BID to 4,000 B/D at surface pressure up to 4,500 psi. The instrument is designed for high-pressure and high-temperature operations. INTRODUCTION The need for an instrument that will measure flow rates in a wellbore is as old as reservoir engineering itself. A number of such devices have been designed within the past few years. Some of these have been described in the literature1,2,3,4,5,6 One of these devices1. a hot-wire anemometer type, made many successful jobs in dry gas producing areas. Difficulty was encountered when this flowmeter was used in wells producing liquids and development work was initiated to overcome this difficulty. The present flowmeter is the result of this work and provides an instrument with a wider range of application in the industry. Consider- able development work has been done on the tool involving many changes in the mechanics of recording the flow readings, however, the basic principle of flow detection has remained the same since its inception. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION The basic principle of operation of the flowmeter is the utilization of a portion of the kinetic energy of flowing well fluid to impart a rotational force to an impeller suspended between two torsion wires. This impeller, Fig. 1, is a screw-type propeller with the blades having a pitch angle of 40. As the well fluid passes through the instrument it strikes the impeller. The resulting force rotates the impeller and twist\ the torsion wires to a balance point at which the torque imparted to the wires balances the force required for the impeller to deflect the well fluid. The impeller is symmetrical and a change in direction of the flow results in a reversal of the direction in which the impeller is deflected. Thus the direction of the flow as well as its velocity is indicated. A dial is attached to the impeller by means of a hollow tube through which the upper torsion wire extends. The angular position of the impeller is recorded by photographing the dial at frequent intervals. In any given set of torsion wires the modulus of shear and polar moment of inertia remain constant and the deflection varies directly with the applied torque. The deflection imparted to the torsion wires also varies as the square of the fluid velocity. Further, the velocities represented by any two given deflections hear the following relationships: and Where V = velocity of flow stream and O ;= deflection. This is the basic relationship which is used to calculate the relative velocities represented by a given set of deflections where the velocity represented by any one of the deflection readings is a known quantity. For a given torque, the deflection of the torsion wire varies inversely as the fourth power of the wire diameter. Wire sizes ranging from ,005 in. in diameter to .022 in. in diameter can be used. THERE are two general approaches to the problem of increasing profits from an operation. One is to lower expense; the other is to raise income. Mechanical preparation of coal may be used for either purpose but a prudent consideration of many details must precede any decision lest the results be negative instead of positive. It is quite possible that any net gain will result from a combination of the two. Since mechanically prepared coal invariably is a better product qualitatively than a hand-picked coal from the same mine, it is a reason- able expectation that the customer will be willing to increase the producer's income by paying a higher price. Or there may be the possibility that a combination of mechanical mining plus mechanical cleaning will give a lower over-all production cost for the coal in the railroad car. More likely, there will be found a combination of these two factors. From the customer's point of view, the competitive delivered cost per B.t.u. considered in relation to such incidental factors as dust nuisance, handling properties, ash disposal, and ash fusibility determines what he will pay. In a bulk tonnage product such as coal, freight is a very considerable part of the delivered fuel cost, and obviously freight paid on incombustible ash has no economic attractions. INCENTIVE FOR CLEANING Coal is prepared in four major ways: 1 (I) by screening or sizing, (a) by mixing or blending, (3) by cleaning, including hand picking and mechanical cleaning, (4) by dustless treatment. By a combination of any or all of these methods, coal can be prepared to standard specifications. It is easily possible to have good cleaning and still get a poor final product because of faulty screening or mixing,

INTRODUCTION The decade from 1969 to 1979 saw the crest of a wave of investments by companies and investors, primarily from the major industrial nations, in the metals and minerals industries of the so-called lesser developed countries. This was brought about by two major considerations: 1). The higher ore grades and therefore the higher profit potential of the mineral deposits in the third world countries, and 2). The desire, particularly by the European countries and by Japan, to ensure a safe supply of raw materials not available in their own countries. The decade began with the start of the Toquepala mine in Peru and the major investments in the Bougainville mine in Papua New Guinea and the Ertsberg mine in Indonesia. It ended with the start-up of Southern Peru Copper Company (SPCC) Cuajone mine in Peru and Inco's Soroako mine in Indonesia and the investments in several major alumina or aluminum projects in Australia and Brazil. Concurrent with this huge flow of funds into the mineral resources industry of the developing world was the build-up of a psychological fear in the host countries of exploitation/domination by the foreign investors. This resulted in an increasing trend towards: 1). Nationalization of existing mineral ventures, and 2). Tougher legal/fiscal frameworks for new ones. NATIONALIZATION Nationalization appeared in its earliest form as "Mexicanization" of the petroleum industry in Mexico in the 1930's, followed later by Mexicanization of the mining industry in general. This was enacted with the Mexican Mining Law of 1961 which required that 51% of the equity be owned by Mexican nationals. Later in the decade the equity share for foreign investors was reduced to 33 1/3% for the developers of the Frasch sulphur operations in the Isthumus of Tehuantepec. However, the law was not fully implemented in the copper industry until late 1970 with the purchase of 51% of the ownership in the Cananea Mining Company. The trend toward nationalization of the copper industry progressed to Chile where in 1967 under the Government of Eduardo Frei the major North American copper companies were induced to sell a one-half interest in their Chilean mines to the State. Likewise, in 1970, "Zambianization" took place, when the two major operating companies Roan Selection Trust (Amax) and Zamanglo (Anglo American) were restructured into Roan Consolidated Mines (RCM) and Nchanga Consolidated Mines (NCCM) providing the government with 51% of the equity ownership. Whilst the earlier forms of nationalization in general constituted a fairly priced buy-out (El Teniente, Chile for US$80 million, RCM for US$117.8 million, NCCM for US$178.7 million), the total nationalization of the Chilean mining companies in 1970 under Salvador Allende did not. Later, "Western" countries joined this trend and on October 29, 1973, Mr. Gough Whitlam proclaimed that "overseas capital must continue... in partnership with Australian capital" and "in some special energy cases we have an objective of 100% Australian ownership". In 1974 Mr. Pierre Trudeau stated: "The Liberal Party of Canada sets as an objective that new resources projects in the natural resource field should have at least 50% and preferably 60% Canadian equity ownership". FOREIGN INVESTMENT The situation for the foreign investor in the worldwide resource industry rapidly deteriorated from then on. New features appeared in mineral exploitation and operating agreements, centering not only on local government/local companies ownership but also on increased taxation. The new tax rate (mineral tax, royalty, and income tax) for the semi-government companies NCCM and RCM in Zambia became an effective 73%. Likewise the much publicized and discussed renegotiated Bougainville agreement brought dramatic increases in the total "take" by the PNG Government. This paper gives results of an experimental study of the sweep efficiency of a miscible displacement in a five-spot. The study was carried out in a parallel-plate glass model in which effects of diffusion were scaled at or near the molecular diffusion level. The experiments show that very early breakthrough (25 to 35 per cent of pore volume (PV) injected) may be expected in miscible floods because of the unfavorable viscosity ratio. However after 1 PV of displacing fluid is injected, the sweep rises to a reasonable value (50 to 60 per cent). Photographs show that small slugs of less than 10 per cent of PV tend to dissipate before breakthrough. A minimum slug size of 15 per cent of PV would appear to be necessary even in a relatively homogeneous formation. Presence of a slug whose viscosity is inter-mediate between that of oil and gas increases the sweep efficiency of the oil-gas system. In a typical system the sweep at breakthrough rose from 26 to 37 per cent of PV for a 25 per cent slug. The increase in sweep brought about by use of a large slug could well pay for the extra deferment cost of the additional slug material. INTRODUCTION Most miscible displacement processes involve the displacement of oil with fluids of much lower viscosity and density. The displacement process at these adverse viscosity and density ratios is dominated by instability phenomena, i.e., viscous fingers and gravity tongues. These phenomena have highly adverse effects on oil recovery. Although a number of laboratory studies have been made to determine the effect of adverse viscosity ratios on five-spot sweep patterns,l,2 the scaling of diffusion effects is uncertain. In the series of scaled model studies reported herein, an attempt was made to scale diffusion. Model studies of miscible displacements in which molecular diffusion predominates are per-mitted by controlling the parallel plate spacing which reduces convective mixing to arbitrarily small levels. To decide how this scaling relates to any particular Geld displacement necessitates an estimation of diffusion effects for the natural rock being considered and conditions under which displacement will be conducted. The approach normally taken is to extrapolate data obtained from stable miscible displacements performed in the laboratory, such as those presented by Brigham et al.3 The validity with which such an extrapolation can be applied to an unstable flow system has yet to be established. If this approach is accepted, a family of oil recovery curves can be generated for a single viscosity ratio based on Brigham's observation that the magnitude of the dispersion coefficient is dependent, among other things, upon specific rock properties. Objective of our test was to define the lower limit of this range by presenting the case where dispersion effects were reduced to the molecular diffusion level in both the transverse and longitudinal directions.

An exploratory survey of the heat treatment response of commercial titanium alloys (Ti-150A, RC-130B, and MST 3AI-5Cr al-loys) shows a wide range of possible hardness and microstructural characteristics. The hardening is primarily dependent on the solid state transformation of the phase. An age hardening reaction which apparently is associated with ß decomposition and precipitation has been shown. Brittleness and notch sensitivity appear to be characteristic of age hardening to high hardness. Ductility, tensile strengths, and elongations are given. A NUMBER of commercially produced titanium-base alloys have been made available by the titanium metals industry. These alloys were developed to combine the light weight of titanium with increased strength through alloy additions. Usually the properties of these alloys are reported for material in the hot rolled and annealed condition. Since the production of commercial titanium has preceded the investigation of titanium-base alloy systems, the potential of these alloys is not well known. Although heat treatability has been indicated for these alloys, data on the response to heat treatment are quite limited. The heat treatability of titanium is based on the allotropic transformation of the high temperature, body-centered cubic ß structure to the low temperature, hexagonal close-packed a structure at approximately 1625 °F. This transformation in the pure metal is of little practical significance in heat treatment since the high temperature phase is not amenable to controlled transformation. Alloy additions serve to alter the transformation kinetics and permit control of the transformation by heat treatment variables. The effects of different alloys on the allotropic transformation in titanium classify them in two general categories,1 a stabilizing and ß stabilizing elements. The a stabilizers, represented by aluminum and oxygen, raise the temperature limits of the low temperature phase and introduce a two-phase a + ß temperature range. The ß stabilizers, represented by molybdenum and columbium, lower the equilibrium temperature of ß and give rise to an extended temperature range where both a and ß phases are stable. Another type of ß stabilizer, represented by iron, chromium, and manganese, introduces a eutectoid reaction. Some commercial titanium alloys belong to complex multiple element systems. Based upon the phase diagrams of the binary systems, the general effect of commercial compositions is to vary the stability of the high temperature phase and significantly alter its transformation characteristics. Therefore it is expected that the characteristics of alloyed titanium can be altered by heat treatment. The present investigation was undertaken to survey the variations in hardness, microstructure, and mechanical properties as affected by heat treatment variables. Commercial Alloys lnvestigated The commercially available titanium-base alloys selected for this investigation and obtained as 3/4 in. diameter hot rolled and annealed bars are listed in Table I. The producer did not determine the chemical composition of the Ti-150A heats X1052 and L685. The early heats of Ti-150A, prefixed with the letter X, were melted with tungsten-tipped electrodes and cast in approximately 500 lb ingots 12 in. in diameter. The heats prefixed with the letter L were melted under a revised melting practice yielding approximately 1300 lb ingots 16 in. in diameter. The final annealing treatment was at 1200" to 1250°F for 1 hr. The MST-3A1-5Cr alloy was melted in an induction furnace and cast in 7 in. diameter ingots. This practice produces high carbon material and some variation in the amount of carbides was found in different sections of the same bar. The RC-130B alloy was melted with a carbon arc. This alloy showed approximately 2 pct carbides. No large segregation effects were observed.

THE Tuesday afternoon session", H. A. Bedworth chairman and T. S. Fuller, vice-chairman, was opened with D. J. McAdam, Jr.'s paper entitled "The Influence of Cyclic Stress on Corrosion." This paper dealt with the influence of cyclic stress on corrosion of alloy steels, corrosion-resisting steels, monel metal and aluminum alloys. The paper was discussed by T. S. Fuller, who pointed out that steels under stress corroded more than unstressed steels when subjected to steam.

In having maintained production for more than 40 years Arizona's Magma mine is unique in a mineral district that includes several major copper mines. Other past and present producers in this area are Miami and Inspiration at Miami, the Old Dominion in Globe, the Ray mine in Ray, and to the south the new San Manuel mine near Tucson. Magma's production of copper, silver, gold, and some zinc has come from nearly parallel east-west striking mineralized faults, one called the Main or Magma vein and the other the Koerner vein, about 1100 ft to the south. This vein system has been prospected and partially mined for some 9000 ft horizontally and 4800 ft vertically. In ascending order from the deepest exploration level, the Main vein cuts Pre-Cambrian schist, Pre-Cambrian Apache Group, Post-Devonian diabase, and Devonian, Mississippian, and Pennsylvania limestones. Until 1950 very little ore was obtained from replacement mineralization.

Mine hoisting ropes can be loaded to capacity only when the strength of each component is exactly known. Characteristic curves provide this information. When load and rate of acceleration are specified for an individual rope, the characteristic curve assumes a predetermined shape. The factor of safety is the value derived by dividing the breaking strength of the rope by the total stress on the rope where it goes over the sheave wheel. Total stress is made up of the weight of skip and cage, weight of ore, weight of rope between sheave and rope clevise or attachment, friction load, and acceleration force. Bending stresses are neglected in this discussion, as sheaves and drum diameters are assumed to be large enough to reduce these stresses to a negligible value.

In a gold standard world which possesses insufficient metal to meet the every-day needs of all, confidence becomes the vital factor, the very foundation upon which the machinery for the expansion of gold into currency, and credit, rests. The gold supply, affected by many influences, moves constantly from one point to another, but not always to that point where it is most needed. In the period 1928-1930, the combined gold holdings of the United States and France increased $1,370,936,-000, and this with new gold adding only $600,000,000 to the monetary gold stock.Theref ore, the gold stocks of other countries must have been depleted during the period by $770,936,000. This uncontrolled shifting throws the delicately adjusted instrumentalities of both credit and commerce out of equilibrium. If a given nation's gold stock shifts so as to bring it substantially below the legal reserve ratio set up against it for currency issues, the effect can easily extend to the currency issues and banking credit volume of one or more nations which may have based their gold exchange standards upon the gold stock of such nation. Thus the substitution of paper based on gold in place of the actual gold is an inflation of the currency, which carries through into an uncontrolled pyramiding upon the entire machinery of credit based on gold. In 1929 Europe, South America, Africa and Asia had overissued currency based on gold. America, Oceanica and Japan, which have not overissued their gold currencies, would in normal times require their entire present gold stocks and, as Continental Asia is largely upon a silver credit basis, from a domestic standpoint, it would appear that the gold problem is not so much one of maldistribution, as it is one of inadequate supply. It would appear that some method of increasing greatly the velocity of gold, within the safe reserve point, should be devised, or that silver, of which estimates indicate that 7,000,000,000 oz. are available for

Mica is an orchid among minerals. It is formed in pegmatites, one of the most bizarre of igneous formations, and is exceeded by few other minerals in the perfection it may attain as to size, color, and cleavage. First used for window glazing, as an ornament and article of trade, it has become one of the most essential insulators of electricity, heat, and shock. Most internal combustion engines use mica condensers or capacitors and such machines of war as planes, tanks, and submarines are immobile without it. The original manuscript of this guide was written in April 1943 at the peak of war emergency. It was not used because shortly thereafter a decision was made to buy on a one price basis eliminating differentials for both quality and size. This is now presented with the thought that from the standpoint of preparedness we can only consider another war imminent and every effort should be made to set up in usable form the experience gained during the Second Morld War. Colonial Mica Corp. was set up by Metals Reserve Co. as a wholly owned government agency to encourage production of domestic mica and to purchase it. It soon became the exclusive buyimg agency for such mica. The writer as Southern Manager called on all the private agencies buying mica to assist in formulating buying policies, methods, and prices. A meeting was held for that purpose in Asheville, N. C., July 20, 1942. In the general discussion the first two hours of the meeting it was decided that the following factors should be considered in pricing strategic mica: clearness, flatness, trimming, color, classification (size and quality), free splitting, hardness, and air inclusions. Most of the mica miners have been buying strategic mica, according to the mine, as No. 1, No. 2, or Nos. 1 and 2 combined. In addition to these grades of strategic mica they have been buying three lower grades of mica, electric (vegetable-stained), black-spotted and black-stained. A number of mines were named one by one and the buyers present gave their opinions as to the basis they would use in buying the sheet mica from each. It was suggested that in addition to the prices already published, prices be posted up to 10 pct higher for special quality and preparation and prices be posted 25 pct lower than the published prices for the lowest acceptable grades of strategic mica, giving the buyers authority to make intermediate prices according to the quality and preparation. It was thought desirable at the same time to announce prices for nonstra-tegic mica where such quality is being obtained in mines producing strategic mica and where it would be necessary to take the output in order to get the strategic mica. It was also suggested that the price of electric and black-spotted mica be 50 pct below the price of the lowest grade of strategic mica and the price of black-stained mica be 60 pct below the price of lowest grade strategic mica. The few experienced buyers available were employed but they were inadequate for the job and others had to be trained. All needed a guide or primer of some kind to attain systematic procedure and consistent prices in their respective buying areas. The Mica Buyers Guide was formulated for that purpose based on experience gained in the first six months of buying. The Preface to the original guide was as follows: The purpose of this guide is to serve as a text in training beginners and as a handbook for experienced buyers of the instructions which have been issued up to this time. At the meeting of prospective buyers last summer, it developed that the first essential to attain uniformity must be some kind of check sheet. Our "Mica Buyers Report" was developed for this purpose and forms the backbone of this guide. Price is determined according to size, quality and preparation. Size can be measured, but no system of measurement or machine has been devised which can be substituted for the trained eye of the buyer to deterrnine quality and preparation. Although the "One Price" system was instituted and the "Guide" not used, the buyers were required to continue making out a "Mica Buyers Report" (Fig1) with each lot of mica purchased. In the general study of coal, all evidence points in the one direction —that coals had their origin in a manner analogous to that of peat. The best method of studying coal, whether it concerns its chemistry, composition, or physical condition, is to study peat. The essentials in a study of peat are a knowledge of the chemistry of plants, knowledge of decay and of the transformation process of plant-substances into peat. A number of facts must be emphasized, namely, (1) peat is formed under wet conditions only; (2) plants grow in the place where peat is formed; (3) all the plant substances go into the bog; and (4) all the plant substances are subjected to a series of phases of decay which are (a) in the air completely above the water level but in relatively moist conditions; (b) above the water level, but covered by debris; and (c) completely submerged by both water and debris. Plant Chemistry Plant chemistry as a whole is remarkably well understood. The number of compounds composing plants is large, and it is not possible here to give even a comprehensive outline, but a classification into definite groups is possible; this is as follows: Carbohydrates; glucosides; pigments; tannins; acids, alcohols and ketones, etc., and their salts; essential oils; resins; vegetable bases; proteins; enzymes. Plant substances may also be grouped according to the role they play in the life of the plant, such as: Framework materials, living materials, food materials, protecting materials, waste materials. While this classification groups them well for. certain purposes, it does not group them exactly chemically; but in a consideration of the composition of coal, this is an excellent classification for our purpose here.

Among engineers engaged in mining coal for river transportation, probably no other subject of equal importance has received so little attention as the methods of transferring into barges and other craft. The liability of all our streams to sodden freshets and their attendant drift and ice-gorges, seems to have had little effect upon the design and construction of what are commonly known as rivertipples, beyond the building of breakwaters, and other similar devices, to guard expensive structures from damage. The first method adopted for such transfer was a simple incline, with a movable cradle, which could be raised or lowered to suit the different stages of water. This system, though limited to a small capacity, and to cars not larger than those commonly used underground, possessed two advantages. The first cost was comparatively small; and, since the structure did not obstruct the channel, there was little risk from freshets, the utmost damage from which could be repaired at small expense. Its disadvantages, however, were many, the principal among them being the breakage of the coal by reason of the necessarily high dump; the damage to barges from the same cause; and the difficulties of screening and distributing the different sizes into separate barges. That system has been almost wholly abandoned of late, in favor of the basket-arrangement, lowering vertically into the barge, with the aid of counter-weights, which return the empty basket; while pipes or chutes convey the small coals into other barges, from a complete set of screens, which this method will readily accommodate. Electvomotie -force measurements hazle been made on ten Au-Ni alloys at temperatures 7754 825O, 900O, and 935°C using galvanic cells with solid electrolyte. Partial and ivtegral thermodynamic functions are derived from the determined activities. which show la9,ge positive deviations jvom Raoult's law. The enthalpies of mixing- are in close accord with calorinletric data and are of comparable accuracy. The results are used to determine the miscibility gap and the spinoidal curL1e, and are qlalitaticely interpreted in terms of the large size difference and electvonic interactions between gold and nickel. Tabulated nalues of the actielities and partial and inteqal free energies, entropies , and enthalpies of mixing are given in the appendix. The Au-Ni binary alloys are of particular interest thermodynamically as despite the large size difference between gold and nickel atoms they have a simple phase diagram.' This shows complete solid solubility above a miscibility gap with a maximum at about 71 at. pct Ni and 810°C. Activity measurements (over a range of temperature) have been made previously on this system using an electrolytic-cell method with a liquid chloride eletrolyte. The accuracy of this data has, however, been queried3'4 as it leads to values for the enthalpy of mixing which are too high when compared with calorimetric measurements.46 Also, the entropy of mixing is too high when compared with the values derived from specific-heat measrements. It was therefore considered worthwhile redetermining the activity data using a galvanic cell with a solid electrolyte (0.85 ZrO, 0.15 CaO). This method is based on a technique introduced by Kiukkola and aner'' and has been used to determine the thermodynamic data for Cu-Ni alloys.' THE ELECTROLYTIC CELL The cell used to determine the activity of nickel in Au-Ni alloys was: The cell reaction, which is discussed for a similar cell by Rapp and Maak, gives a direct measurement of the activity of nickel in the alloys as where aNi(alloy) is the activity of nickel in the alloy, 3 is Faraday's constant, E is the measured electromotive force, R is the gas constant, and T is absolute temperature. For the valid application of this type of cell the arrangement must be ther modynamic ally stable, which means that: 1) The free energies of formation of the oxides fulfill the relation 2) The vapor pressures or dissociation pressures of each component must be so small that during the time of the experiment the amount of any material transported by the gas is negligible. 3) Side reactions which change the alloy composition must be negligible. These reactions are possible both with the surrounding gas atmosphere and with neighboring solid material. The first two conditions are fulfilled by the above cell.' The third condition is approached by care in the experimental technique. The factors which control the attainment of equilibrium in this type of cell have been considered by Rapp and aak, who conclude that metallic diffusion in the alloy is the rate-control ling step. A lower temperature limit for the practical application of this cell is therefore set by the condition that equilibrium must be attained in reasonable times. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUE The starting materials were mint gold (99.99 pct Au) and Mond nickel (99.9 pct Ni). Alloys, nominally 5 at. pct Ni and then each 10 at. pct across the system, were produced by vacuum-levitation melting compacts of mixed drillings of the pure metals. RECENT developments in the Turner Valley gas and oil field, 40 mi. southwest of Calgary, Alberta, have indicated a large producing crude-oil area. Drilling be¬gan in Turner Valley in 1913 but no major developments took place until the fall of 1924, when Royalite No. 4 well at a depth of 3740 ft. in the upper part of the Paleozoic (Mississippian) limestone obtained a production - of 20,000 M cu. ft. of gas with a content of about one imperial gallon of naphtha (73° A.P.I.) per M cu. ft. This well produced as much as 600 bbl. of naphtha per day, and until abandonment in 1934 produced 911,313 bbl., which together with the gas sold was valued at about $5,000.000.

Therrnal resistance is measured on GaAs laser diodes in the temperature range 77" to 300°K. These data show that typically the thermal resistance increases fifteen times from 77 to 300°K. The increase is attributed to the decrease in thermal conductivity of Gds. Nornzalized thermal-resistance experimental and calculated from published thermal-conductivity data) values are compared and good agreement shown. In many practical applications, it is desirable to obtain high average power output from laser diodes. Average power output is determined in large measure by the external efficiency and thermal resistance of the diode.'-3 The average input power with which a laser diode may be pumped is dependent on the thermal resistance. Thermal resistance has been studied over the temperature range from 77" to 300°K which is usually of interest in practical applications. This correspondence presents data on thermal resistance for GaAs laser diodes and compares them to values calculated from thermal-conductivity data. Junction heating arises from three distinct components: 1) joule heating, 2) nonradiative recombinations, and 3) reabsorption of radiation. In high-threshold lasers, joule heating predominates.4 Typically, the nonradiative recombination is not negligible and contributes significantly to junction heating. The loss caused by reabsorption may be of the order of the joule-heating loss.' The fabrication and the geometry of laser diodes have been described in other publications.5 The data presented were obtained from diodes which were fabricated from the same region of a wafer to minimize differences. Fig. 1 shows four types of heat sinks employed in this study. In types 1 and 2, the laser cavities are alloyed; pressure contacts are employed in types 3 and 4, and indium is plated on the inside faces to improve the intimacy of contact between the diode and the heat sink. The thermal resistance R is defined by the following relationship: where AT is the junction-temperature rise above the heat-sink temperature for the diode power dissipation Pd. For measurement of thermal resistance, a direct current is passed through the junction, in the range from 1 to 50 pct of threshold. The diode is placed in the laser mode by superimposing a current pulse of low-duty cycle on the direct current.3 Junction-temperature rise is obtained from the time-resolved laser spectrum at the leading edge of the current pulse.' Typically, the laser line shift is 2.5A per OK. The resolution employed in these experiments is 0.5A; therefore, the accuracy in the temperature measurement is 0.2K. Typically, the temperature rise is 2" to 20°K. The power dissipation is the difference between the dc power input, and the radiation power exiting the diode. The measurement accuracy is less than 1

The development of the Hauto power plant and the claims made by various engineers that electricity was more economical than steam for power purposes in and about the mines, led the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Co., in 1911, to conduct a test to ascertain the consumption of power used by a large steam hoisting engine. The question being one on which no reliable information could be found, and the opinion of various engineers differing to such an extent, it was decided that a test under actual operating conditions was necessary. This was arranged for at one of the collieries. The engine selected was 2 30 by 60-in. (76.2 by 152.4-cm.) piston-valve engine of modern type, and comparatively new. The boiler plant from which the hoist received its power was about 600 ft. (182 m.) from the engine, the latter being fed by a 10-in. (25.4-cm.) steam line insulated with magnesia pipe covering. Two batteries of the boiler plant, aggregating 1200 hp., were cut off and fed into a separate steam line leading direct to the hoist engine. Steam auxiliaries, consisting of feed-water pump and blowers, were fed by the boilers in test, and their consumption charged against the hoist. A barrel weighing device was installed, as it was felt that this would be the most accurate way of determining the consumption of water. The fuel, No. 3 buckwheat, was carefully weighed, and every precaution was taken to make the test accurate in every particular. The test was run for 1 week, or a total of 168 hr. A record was kept of the number of trips hoisted or lowered, and continuous indicator cards were taken. One particular set of cards was taken with the hoist operating balanced, and also with the hoist operating with no counterweight other than the empty cage, the coal in the car being weighed. The speed of the hoist was taken by means of a graphic recording instrument which registered the number of revolutions every 5 sec. From this record, speed-time curves were plotted.

New measurements of graphite and cementite solubilities in ferrite have been obtained to resolve disagreements among previous data. To measure graphite solubility, specimens of iron were equilibrated with rarious carburizing atmospheres at temperatures be-twee~z 480" and 1435°C. The carbon activity of each atmosphere relative to graphite was taken from published data. After quenching from each equilibration treatment the concentration of carbon (typically 10 pprn by wt) was determined from the height of the Snoek peak in the internal friction spectrum. A few inclividual analyses by combustion support the reszdts of Smith on the solubility of graphite near the eutectoid temperature. Combination of these combustion and internal friction analyses determines In a, (at 0.01 wt pct) = 24,000/RT - 12.72, where a, is the activtity relative to graphite in ferrite at fixed cornposition. The same specimens were used to determine the solubility of self-stressed cementite precipitates. The results indicate solubilities of 6.3, 23.2, and 68 pprn carbon by wt at respectively 400°, 500". and 600°C. The once large discrepancy between the cementite solubility determined by internal frictiori and that calculated from flee energy data has been almost completely resolved. A recent study1 (hereafter designated I) on the solubility of cementite in a iron did not fully resolve the disagreement among previous data. The remaining disagreement is illustrated by the phase diagram in Fig. L The data of I are represented by the line labeled "stress-free" cementite. They determine a heat of solution of cementite of (14.8 * 0.2) kcal per mole which contrasts with the (20 * 1) kcal per mole derived from Smith's graphite solubility2 and the formation energy of cementite.3 Toward resolving this disagreement we have obtained new data on the solubilities of graphite and cementite. METHODS As in I the Snoek peak in the internal friction spectrum was used to measure the concentration of carbon dissolved in ferrite. This method relies on the relation C=kQ-1 [1] in which C is the concentration of dissolved carbon, Q-I is the Snoek peak height, and k is a proportionality factor which is a function of the peak temperature, polycrystalline texture, and other parameters characteristic of the ferrite lattice. To determine true heats of solution via Eq. [1], it is necessary to establish that k is independent of the temperature from which the specimen is quenched. Some evidence on this point is contained in a separate report.* Additional evidence is shown by the data points in Fig. 1. These represent the Snoek peaks of two specimens carburized to about 10 ppm C, copper plated, and quenched first from 888º then from 588°C. The copper plate was removed before each Snoek peak measurement. These data show that there is no detectable dependence of k on quenching temperature. The solubility of graphite was determined by repeatedly carburizing various specimens of iron wire with gas mixtures of known carbon activity relative to graphite. To cover a wide temperature range within the a phase boundaries it is desirable to use as low a carbon concentration as is compatible with reasonable precision. With the present internal friction apparatus the best compromise of these desires is a concentration near 10 wt ppm. The dashed line in Fig. 1 was used to approximate the activity of carbon* for

At the same time he was effective in manual and mechanical work and was generally found working side by side with the men under his direction. Lieutenant.Louis Baird Louis Baird, a Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery of the British Army, died on the battlefield in 1915. Lieutenant Baird was born July 28, 1880, at Stirling, Scotland. His technical education was obtained at King's College, Melbourne, Australia, in 1893 to 1895, and at the Technical College at Glasgow, Scotland, in 1897 to 1900. After an apprenticeship with the Mexican J. & 8. Rec. Co. of Mexico, lasting from 1900 to 1903, he became mill superintendent for the Cia. Minera Benito, at Juarez, Zac. During the year 1905-6 he was assistant manager of the Caridelaria y Anexas, at Pinos, Zac., and from 1906 to 1907 was engineer with the Cia. Minera Jalisco, San Sebastian, Jalisco. At the time of his admission to the Institute, in 1908, he was practising as a mining engineer at Etzatlan, Jalisco, Mexico. For the next four years he practised his profession in the City of Guadalajara, Jalisco, removing, in 1913, to Ixtlan del Rio, in the State of Tepic. It was from here that he returned to England to put his services at the disposal of the British Government. The Institute is not definitely informed as to how, where, or when Lieutenant Baird met his death. iCaptain John H. Ballamy John H. Ballamy, Captain on the Regimental Staff of the 103d Engineers, was killed near Fismes, on Aug. 9, 1918. Captain Ballamy was born at Plvmouth. Pa.. in 1886 and graduated from' the High School of that town in 1903. In the following year he began work as a coal miner, and at the same time began the study of mining engineering in the evening and any other spare time.
