The grades of commercial steel produced in large quantities can be divided into two general types from the standpoint of ingot structure— killed and rimmed. Killed steel covers a wide variety with carbon contents throughout the range of the steel portion of the iron-carbon diagram, and is the kind usually used in the production of alloy steels. Rimmed steel is normally associated with carbon ranges under 0.30 per cent, and is not yet used to a large extent in alloy practice, except for copper-bearing steels. The fundamental differences in the ingots made from these two types of steel can be seen most easily in Figs. 1 to 7. In the rimmed ingot shown in Figs. 5 to 7 there are two lines of blowholes approximately parallel to the sides and coming together at the top and at the bottom of the ingot. In the killed ingots shown in Figs. 1 to 4 these blowholes arc not present. Also, the rimmed ingot has no well defined pipe, as compared to the deep pipe on the killed ingots, and there are numerous primary blowholes in the lower portion of the rimmed ingot perpendicular to the surface and close to it, while on the killed ingot there are no blowholes of this type in the ingot shown in Fig. 1 and very small ones close to the surface in the lower part of the ingot shown in Figs. 2 to 4. With respect to the presence of pipe and the primary blowholes, the structure may vary considerably in both rimmed and killed ingots, therefore these cannot be considered as fundamental structural characteristics differentiating the two types of steel. The primary blowholes in rimmed ingots may be much less pronounced than those in the ingot shown in Figs. 5 to 7—as, for example, in "ingot iron," which is entirely free from them. An example of a cross section of an ingot-iron ingot is shown on page 16 of "Research and Methods of Analysis of Iron and Steel," published by the American Rolling Mill Co. (1920). A certain amount of pipe may also occur in rimmed ingots, though it is normally porous and not as well defined [or deep as in the killed ingot of Fig. 1. RECENTLY there has been considerable interest in the production and use of extra hard alloys composed primarily of tungsten and carbon. Dr. Hoyt's recent paper1 gives a good description of these alloys and describes their performance when used as tools. There are a number of these alloys on the market sold under various trade names, and it is the purpose of this paper to describe the results of an investigation of the structure of five of these alloys by means of microscopic and X-ray methods. The samples studied were in the form of small tools or wire-drawing dies, which were either purchased or supplied as samples. They were in some cases not supplied by the original makers but were furnished by the agents in this country, and we wish to call attention to the fact that they may not be truly representative of the materials supplied under the various trade names. No performance data are given and no inference as to the inferiority of one alloy as against any other is made. K. Schröter2 recently described methods for polishing alloys of this type for microscopic examination and has presented photomicrographs of several alloys. However, he did not identify their constituents or describe methods for their identification.

For many years hydrocyclones, commonly referred to as cyclones, have been extensively utilized in the classification of particles in comminution circuits. The practical range of classification for cyclones is 40 microns to 400 microns, with some remote applications as fine as 5 microns or as coarse as 1000 microns. Cyclones are used in both primary and secondary grinding circuits as well as regrind circuits. The information given in this chapter is intended to provide a method, at least for estimating purposes, of selecting the proper number and size of cyclones and to determine the proper level of operating variables. Generally, it is recommended that cyclone suppliers be consulted for sizing confirmation. Sow cyclone suppliers employ digital computers to aid in the sizing and selection of cyclones. CYCLONE DESCRIPTION AND BASIC OPERATION Figure 1 shows a cutaway view of a typical cyclone. During operation, the feed slurry enters the cyclone under pressure through the feed pipe into the top of the cylindrical feed chamber. This tangential entrance is accomplished by two types of design, as shown in Figure 2. Since the majority of research has been done with the involuted type, the graphs and relationships shown may not be strictly applicable to other designs. As the feed enters the chamber, a rotation of the slurry inside of the cyclone begins, causing centrifugal forces to accelerate the movement of the particles towards the outer wall. The particles migrate downward in a spiral pattern through the cylindrical section and into the conical section. At this point the smaller mass particles migrate toward the center and spiral upward and out through the vortex finder, discharging through the overflow pipe. This product, which contains the finer particles and the majority of the water, is termed the overflow and should be discharged at or near atmospheric pressure. The higher mss particles remain in a downward spiral path along the walls of the conical section and gradually exit through the apex orifice. This product is termed the underflow and also should be discharged at or near atmospheric pressure.

General Motors, with $20.7 billion in sales, heads the entire list, and a prominent member of the mining industry, Island Creek Coal, occupies the 500th spot with sales of $109.6 million. The lists of "industry medians" following mining's "Top 38" reveal how well the mining industry fared in 1965 in various salient categories of business performance.

The relation of labor to the accident rate in mines is admirably epitomized by Thomas T. Read in his paper presented at the St. Louis meeting, in the sentence "Reliance for accident prevention must be upon the individual worker himself." In connection with the inspection of mines for the fixing of merit premium rates for insurance under workmen's compensation, it has been the practice of The Associated Companies to allow 60 per cent, of the credits for safeguarding of the physical hazards of the mine and 40 per cent. for the human element. By "human element" is meant that inherent tendency of the industrial worker to be careless, negligent, or disobedient, in respect to his own safety, and after that also of his fellow workman. This is a tendency not only of the laborer or of the skilled miner, but of all human beings, working or traveling anywhere. This element of mine safety, sometimes called the moral hazard, has been admirably shown by statistics, compiled from the records of the Department of Mines of the Union of South Africa, to be due in about equal measure to the carelessness of the miner and to that of the operator. These statistics show that about one-half the fatalities in mines are due to the so-called hazard of the industry, or what is sometimes called the dangers inherent to work or misadventure. Of 2497 fatalities investigated, including over 200,000 employees, for a period of over 21/2 years, it was found that 17.5 per cent. were due to faulty plant or material, fault of the foreman, or of the management—in short were due to the operator; 17.1 per cent. to disobedience of orders, carelessness or ignorance of injured persons; and 5.9 per cent. through fault of others, including fellow workmen. The fault of the operator is evidenced by failure to give proper warning, failure to inspect, failure to furnish proper equipment, and neglecting to comply with the recommendations of the inspector. Above 500°C, where dislocation climb is rate controlling, it is observed that the activation energy for creep is independent of the apblied stress, although it varies from 62 kcal per mol at 15 pct A1 to 73 kcals per mol at 20 pctA1 due to the change in short-range ovdw with composition. Below 500°C, when the nonconservative motion of jogs upon dislocations is thought to be rate controlling, the activation energy is stress dependent. A sudden increase in the creep rate, for which no explanation is availab2e, occurs at the highest stress at all temperatures. CREEP has been the subject of numerous research publications during the past decade with most of the attention focused upon high temperature steady state creep, i.e., above 0.5 TM, where TM is the absolute melting temperature, as it is the most amenable to theory. Many of the proposed theories involve the climb of dislocations out of their slip plane, which allows them to circumvent obstacles or to annihilate dislocations of opposite sign on other slip planes.' For pure metals it is observed that the activation energy for this creep is equal to the activation energy for self diffusion.' The position is much more complicated in alloys as there are many possible microcreep mehanisms, as well as dislocation climb, which could be rate controlling. There has been little systematic investi- gation of alloys, but Weertman (lead and indium base alloys)3 and Lawley, Coll, and Cahn (Fe-A1 alloys)4 suggest a microcreep process as the controlling factor. A Cottrell-Jaswon atmosphere mechanism is proposed for the lead and indium alloys, and a mechanism involving crystallographic order for the Fe-A1 alloys. Lawley et al. showed that the formation of a super-lattice, either of the FeAl or Fe3A1 type. decreased the rate and increased the activation energy for creep. From the measurements of lattice parameters,= resistivity,' magnetic properties,7'8 internal friction: and dilatometry10 the ordered region is thought to commence at -19 at. pct Al. The plan recently started for the organization of a Division of Re-search and Statistics in the American Petroleum Institute will probably shortly be consummated. It is proposed to expend $500,000 annually for this research work. The organization's work, as now outlined, pro-vides for a Technical Director, who is to be in general charge of all the work. He is to be assisted by Consulting Technical Experts, who are to be distinguished specialists in the industry and are to serve without pay. In addition, there is to be an advisory committee made up of one representative from the Bureau of Standards, Bureau of Mines, Geo-logical Survey, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engi-neers, Society of Automotive Engineers, National Automobile Chamber, of Commerce, American Society for Testing Materials, American Chem-ical Society, and the National Research Council. This committee is to meet regularly to discuss the problems of the petroleum industry. An engineer and chief economist are to assist the Director.- The econ-omist is to be in charge of statistics, economic phases of the industry, and publicity. It is the intention to centralize in the Institute all infor-mation that may be required by the States or Federal Government, which would be of value to members of the Institute. This includes prices of crude oil, refined products, and natural gas. The engineer of the division is to coordinate the research work to be undertaken by, the subdivisions of production, chemical engineering, utilization, and special research. EARLIER work1 indicated that in rolled and annealed copper the volume fraction of the cube-texture component may increase on continued isothermal annealing. Merlini found2 that in rolled copper the well-known increase in the amount of cube-oriented material with increasing annealing temperature3 is concurrent with grain growth, which takes place after recrystallization is complete. It was found that both in copper2 and in aluminum4 the texture resulting from primary recrystallization, even if this is followed by some grain growth, may in general comprise, in addition to the cube-texture component, four symmetrical texture components of the general type (123)[412], i.e., components not very far from the ideal orientations of the rolling texture. The volume fraction of the cube-texture component increases on further annealing at the expense of these four components.' The present work was undertaken to study quantitatively the increase in the volume fraction of the cube-texture component in the course of normal grain growth, under varying conditions. Since the grain-gr3wth behavior of A1-Mn alloys has been already investigated in some detaiL5 an A1 + 0.8 pct Mn alloy was chosen for this work, in which the extent of normal grain growth can be effectively controlled by the inhibiting effect of a dispersed second phase. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE High-purity aluminum of the following composition was used: A1 99.997 pct, Cu 0.0004 pct, Fe 0.0005 pct, and Si 0.001 pct. A high-purity A1-Mn master alloy was prepared by dehydrating manganese chloride at 500°C and reacting it with molten high-purity aluminum at 750°C in a graphite crucible.5 The Mn metal reduced from the salt by the molten aluminum goes into solution in the latter. The master alloy? containing 13 pct Mn, was solidified under conditions suitable for minimizing segregation. An ingot of the final alloy, to be used in the experiments, was per pared by melting high-purity aluminum and the necessary amount of master alloy in a graphite crucible, and by pouring the molten alloy into a graphite mold preheated to 700°C through a box containing graphite baffles designed to intercept most of the aluminum oxide films floating in the melt. The melt was then solidified by placing the mold on a water-cooled copper plate and by keeping the top of the mold hot, in order to minimize piping. The 6 1/2 in. long, 11/4-in.diam ingot consisted largely of a single crystal. Chemical analysis showed that there was little segregation from the bottom (0.83 pct Mn) to the top (0.81 pct Mn). Spectrographic analysis of the ingot showed that the impurity content remained essentially the same as that of the aluminum used. The ingot was processed so as to obtain a uniformly small grain size. without banding. The ini-tial steps of rolling in the form of a flat bar and of annealing, down through a thickness of 0.4 in., are shown in Table I. At this point the bar was cut into four sections, each approximately 3 in. long, which were processed separately as shown in Table If. The table also gives the penultimate grain sizes obtained in each section by annealing prior to the final rolling of 90 pct RA. During the final rolling the strips were reversed end to end between passes. Annealing treatments were given in a salt pot furnace, with the temperature controlled to 1°C. All annealing of section "6s" was carried out above the solvus point to avoid the formation of second-phase precipitate. The penultimate annealing was sufficiently short to give a relatively fine grain size in spite of the high temperature. Section "6L" was processed in a similar manner, except that the penultimate annealing was much longer, so as to allow considerable grain growth. Section "4" was given the two final

MANY different methods are used for transporting coal from the working face to the tipple. The common methods are animal haulage, locomotive haulage, conveyor systems, and combinations of these three, supplemented, at times, by the miner pushing his own car. Haulage may also be classified into gathering and main line. Gathering haulage is the collecting of loaded cars to a point whence they are hauled to the tipple. In this there is perhaps more lost-time than on the main line because there are .more units in the operation to be synchronized. Also, conditions on the gathering haul- age, such as bad track, poor timbering, insufficient motive power, etc., cause delays; usually these are corrected on the main-line haulage.

THERE have been two important accomplishments of the Truman administration; the Hoover Commission report on inefficiency and waste in government and the report of the Paley Commission on the natural resources of the United States. Both reports are in the interest of the American people and should transcend the boundaries of political parties. Both reports are starting points for the formulation of policies which must be continuously revised to meet changing conditions. Regardless of the outcome of the election the principles embodied in these two great documents must be kept alive. The Paley report is right in our own bailiwick of mineral raw materials and it behooves us to study it carefully as our responsibility to posterity. To those in the mining industry who have limited their field of observation to moving rock or to metal prices it may come as a surprise that our production of such staples as copper, lead, and zinc has fallen behind increased requirements to the point that substantial tonnages must be imported. Iron ore is next on the list and everybody knows that such metals as tin, tungsten, chromium, manganese, nickel, and cobalt are imported almost exclusively. The crisis in raw materials pointed up by the Paley report has been reported annually by Elmer Pehrson and others to small gatherings at the Mineral Economics Division sessions at the Annual Meeting for as long as we can remember. In September 1949, the United Nations Economic and Social Council held an international resource conference at Lake Success which disclosed these same grave conclusions: - Consumption of raw materials is multiplying at an alarming rate, faster than discoveries or replacements are being made. - Production has been wasteful and utilization lavishly beyond enginee¬ing and practical requirements. - Industrialized nations are depleted and many raw materials consumed by industry are not found in the industrialized countries. - Nations formerly exporters of raw materials are increasingly building their own consuming industries. - Political forces in the world are limiting access to raw materials. The Paley Commission selecting the quarter century, 1950 to 1975, to project raw material requirements for the United States, pointed out obstacles to meeting these requirements, and made recommendations for procurement. It is not important that we disagree that cobalt consumption will reach 344 pct of present, or fluorspar 187 pct when iron and ferroalloys are only expected to increase 75 pct. What is important it that the fabulous appetite of the United States for mineral raw materials has consumed more since World War I than was consumed by the entire world in all recorded history prior to 1914. And, unless the people of the United States are satisfied to remain at their present standard of living (which is unthinkable) this consumption is correctly plotted by the Paley Commission as continuing to expand. If the U. S. is to continue on a course of progress, it must procure raw materials wherever it can at the lowest possible cost. Natural resources are clearly an area in which the broadest cooperation between industry and government must exist to achieve efficient exploitation, economic consumption, and expansion of sources of supply. The message of the Paley report requires action comparable to that of the North Atlantic Pact. Its implication is as significant as military preparedness. It is a world problem. It is a mining engineering problem. Don't let it die!

WithIn the past few years, considerable development has been made in the coal-mining industry in Illinois and Indiana and it is the purpose of the authors to record its most important phases. Perhaps the two most striking features are the entry into the producing fields of certain large consumers of coal and the magnitude of some of the new operations. Mines are now being equipped by the Chicago & Northwestern R. R., the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy R. R., the Standard Oil Co., of Indiana, and the Union Electric Light & Power Co. of St. Louis. Besides, the U. S. Steel Corpn. has increased its coal-mining activities by commencing operations on its large holdings northeast of Benton, Franklin CO., Ill. Until recent years, the supply of coal has commonly been adequate and prices have generally been favorable, especially to large consumers, as the magnitude of their purchases enabled them to obtain satisfactory quotations from producers. In fact, most consumers of coal have believed that they could buy their fuel more satisfactorily in the open market than they could produce it themselves. The entry of the United States into the war was accompanied by various disarrangements of industrial conditions, and a demand for coal in excess of the supply seemed likely to be experienced for an indefinite period. Under these circumstances it seemed that the greatest assurance of a supply of fuel was its production by the operation of mines. In the case of the Chicago & Northwestern R. R. and the U. S. Steel Corpn. the production of coal has been carried on for many years with satisfactory results, but the C. B. & Q. R. R., the Union Electric Light & Power Co. and the Standard Oil Co. of Indiana had not been producers of coal, at least in this district. Apparently the most impressive feature of the newest mines is their capacity, for in some cases it is planned that production shall be in the neighborhood of 1000 tons per hr. There are mines now in this field having nearly that output, but these were not planned for such output; in fact, when the shafts were sunk and the machinery installed it was generally supposed that the daily outputs would be only in the neighborhood of 4000 to 5000 tons. Beds or lenses of potash and magnesium salts are found in a thick salt section (Salado) overlain by Rustler Red Beds in several members of which water is present and from one of which the rehery process water used by International is obtained. Most of the holes drilled are less than 1000 ft. deep, but some wildcat holes have exceeded 3- ft. cable or rotary tools are used to drill down to the salt. when samples of water are desired the cable rig is used, but when this is not necessary, and where caving material is present, the rotary rig has an advantage. The rotary rig has a further advantage in that only one machine is required to drill and core the entire hole, whereas the cable rig must be moved off to make way for the core drill. Casing is placed in the upper section of the hole as required to shut off water, and a 5 3/16 in. string is set in the top of the salt before coring starts. With the rotary rig drilling is often carried to the salt with no casing, as drilling mud seals off caving ground and water-bearing strata, and a string of 4-in. line pipe or 4-in. flush-joint casing is landed on top of salt. Several types of gasoline-powered core rigs have been used in the field and all recover a 2 1/2-in. core. More recently the Sullivan Model 37 rotary rig has been tried, and a Sullivan Model N has been adapted to use a rotary bit in the upper section. Core is recovered in 20 ft. sections with a double-tube core barrel, and the bit used is a bottom-discharge type set with diamonds. The drilling fluid must be a saturated brine to prevent solution and etching of the minerals present. Blowouts are apt to Occur from nitrogen gas trapped under the several polybalite beds, and some have been strong enough to blow the tools out of the hole. Core recovery is practically loo per cent. All holes are plugged after drilling, with cement through the salt section and opposite each water horizon* and mud through the remainder of the hole. Cores are carefully logged and preserved, and in sections containing potash and magnesium minerals they are quartered and analyzed. The correlation of Ore beds between drill holes is briefly described. Introduction Beds Or lenses of potash and magnesium salts are found at varying depths in a thick deposit of salt (Salado formation) in what is known as the Permian Basin, in southeast New Mexico and West Texas. The Salado formation is Composed chiefly of common salt (halite) with numerous beds of anhydrite, polyhalite, and the soluble potash minerals carnallite, sylvite and langbeinite. Many other minerals are present in small amounts but their Presence has no bearing On the coring technique. Before starting to core the salt section it is necessary to penetrate 300 to 600 ft. of unconformably overlying Permian sediments (Rustler formation) which are composed of red and gray clay, sand, anhydrite, dolomitic limestone and occasional lenses of salt. All holes are plugged after drilling, with cement through the salt section and opposite each water horizon* and mud through the remainder of the hole. Cores are carefully logged and preserved, and in sections containing potash and magnesium minerals they are quartered and analyzed. The correlation of Ore beds between drill holes is briefly described. Introduction Beds Or lenses of potash and magnesium salts are found at varying depths in a thick deposit of salt (Salado formation) in what is known as the Permian Basin, in southeast New Mexico and West Texas. The Salado formation is Composed chiefly of common salt (halite) with numerous beds of anhydrite, polyhalite, and the soluble potash minerals carnallite, sylvite and langbeinite. Many other minerals are present in small amounts but their Presence has no bearing On the coring technique. Before starting to core the salt section it is necessary to penetrate 300 to 600 ft. of unconformably overlying Permian sediments (Rustler formation) which are composed of red and gray clay, sand, anhydrite, dolomitic limestone and occasional lenses of salt. THERE is today no proven continuous mining machine that can be used under all the varying conditions found in most bituminous coal mines. During the last five years, however, both the machines and methods of using them have been improved. Coal operators can now exercise a fair degree of selectivity, except those who must struggle with thick and hard partings and operate in seams less than 40 in. thick. It must be realized, then, that more than one type of continuous miner may be used advantageously in the same coal mine. Although this appears to violate the standardization generally sought after, the gain can more than offset added maintenance and, to a lesser degree, operating problems. It is equally important to realize that most coal mines will require one or more conventional loader setups in the plan of total mechanization. Seam variations, adverse physical conditions, and special designs of main headings for haulage and ventilation, to name only three reasons, may render 100 pct use of continuous miners uneconomical. Of course, this situation may change. In one mine, prior to 1954, machines that ripped coal from the face achieved only average results, as compared to the impressive performance of boring-type units in another coal mine. A boring-type unit was therefore selected for the first mine in the belief that the chance of success would be greater if it were used in a combined cutting and wedging operation, cutting a full face in its forward movement. The miner was located in a part of the mine where a special projection could be readily developed, a solid area scheduled for mining according to the overall progress plan. All openings surrounding the particular area were carefully investigated for the presence of sulfur balls. Fig. 1 (opposite) shows the representative seam section, containing the several pyritic bands 1/4 to 1/2 in. thick; a characteristic Pittsburgh seam parting averaging 5 to 6 in. of slate, coal, and slate; and the occasional py-rite lenses 2 to 3 in. thick.
