Rock pressure against the supports for underground workings in certain mines becomes sufficiently severe to crush sound timbers. The cost of maintenance of these mines increases critically as the workings are extended. "Heavy ground " and "swell-jng ground" are terms commonly applied to a condition of excessive pressure from the wall rock. Defined for the purposes of this paper, "heavy ground" delivers gravi-tative pressure on the supports of a mint opening; "swelling ground" delivers pressure arising from expansion of the wall rock. Mining problems created by heavy ground have been studied extensively by mining engineers, as in the recent Symposium on Block caving.' A parallel study of rock bursts2 attacks the field of ground that ruptures under strain. The problem of swelling ground, which has received less current attention, is the subject of this paper. An ExaMPLe of Swelling Ground Severe cases of swelling ground are found in the gougy shear zones in mines along the western Sierra Nevada, where the veins are accompanied by faults through altered serpentine, schist and slate. For example, along troublesome stretches in the ldaho Maryland mine, Grass Valley, California, swelling ground continues to crush drift timbers, with diminishing intensity, for 3 to 10 years after entry. During this period, from five to nine generations of crushed timber sets must be replaced and a large additional tonnage of scaly rock and wet gouge must be removed from the drift to make room for this succession of new timbers. After "the squeeze has been taken out of the ground" the timbers will stand for years, until they collapse from decay. Heaving of floor and footwall along drifts develops soon after the timber sets are placed and frequent grading down of the track is necessary to keep it serviceable and to maintain headroom. If sills are placed under the drift posts, the sets break more quickly and the track becomes impassable at once. When the floor is left Open? and the bottoms of posts and stulls are pencil-pointed, the scaly ground of the fault zone swells up around the timbers (Fig. I) instead of breaking them (Fig. 2). A foot or two of this encroaching ground is trimmed from the floor and lower sides of the drift several times before complete retimbering is necessary. when a set of timber fai1s under the Pressure of swelling ground, there is no immediate fall of timber and broken rock to fill the drift, as is customary in heavy, caving ground. Instead, ground swelling from sides, top and bottom gradually closes the opening, over a period of weeks or months, and no especial hazard to workmen is present while they have room to walk through the narrowing drift. THE Sydney coal field, the largest and most valuable in Nova Scotia, is situated on the northeastern coast of the Island of Cape Breton, extending from Mira Bay on the south to Cape Dauphin on the north, a distance of 30 miles, and has a general dip northeast under the sea. (Fig. 1.) The field embraces the mining villages of Morien, Birchgrove and Reserve and the towns of Dominion, Glace Bay, Waterford and Sydney Mines. The city of Sydney is situated about midway between the northern and southern extremities of the field and on the western fringe of the productive coal measures. Sydney harbor crosses the coal field, cutting off direct rail connection between Sydney Mines and the greater part of the field to the southeast. (Fig. 2.) The coal measures are exposed in the cliffs on the coast line, which rise to an average height of 30 ft., and are almost continuous throughout the length of the field. The portion of the coal field under land forms a small segment of a circle, the greatest distance from the coast landwards is 9 miles, and it occupies an area of 200 sq. miles. The greatest distance developed seawards from the shore by mining operations is 2 ¼ miles. The strata maintain a regularity of dip at this distance, proving a submarine area of about 70 sq. miles. How much further the coal field extends seawards is unknown, but the indications are that it extends far beyond the present economical working limit and in all probability there is a vast submarine coal field. The productive coal measures are of Carboniferous age, these being underlaid by beds of sandstone, locally classed as millstone grit, which define the southern limit of the field,, while a spur of syenitic hills cuts off the coal-bearing strata on the north. Two main anticlinal folds having a general course easterly divide the field into three basins named from north to south: Sydney Mines-Lingan, Glace Bay and Morien.

In a recent communication, Smith and Wood described some results of 800°C compression/creep tests on WC-12 wt pct Co alloys in which plastic flow in the WC particles was believed to have occurred. The deformation observed in the WC particles was found to be a function of the rate of loading. The authors suggested that their data constituted support for the Ansell6-Lenel theory of yielding in dispersion-strengthened alloys. I do not agree with this interpretation since the Ansell-Lenel theory does not apply to the type of alloy in question. In this alloy, the dispersoid is present to the extent of about 80 vol pct. Even where there is no continuous skeleton, which apparently is the case in this instance, the simple fact is that nearly all of the load is carried elastically by the stronger material (wc).7 The constraint imposed upon the matrix, by virtue of the differences in Young's modulii and Poissons ratios, severely limits the stress level to which it may be subjected (assuming that the interfaces remain intact). If one allows for the constraint and then performs the same computation as in Smith and Wood, one finds that the stress on a WC particle is about 4 x 105 psi. This is about 21/2 times lower than the predicted fracture stress for WC. I would completely agree with the final paragraph of Smith and Wood, namely, that loading rate is of considerable significance. However. a more likely interpretation of their data is, I submit, that in the absence of stress relaxation (by secondary slip or climb) those WC-Co interfaces subjected to a normal tensile stress begin to fail. Once this occurs, the stress distribution will change rapidly and "premature" fracture of the WC then becomes quite probable. Tne serrated edges shown in Fig. 1 may very well be fine, interface fissures.

Wherever salt is extracted from the ground as an artificial brine produced by pumping down fresh water to dissolve the salt, subsidence of the overburden is a possibility, though apparently few cases of such subsidence have been noted and detailed records are wanting. This description is intended as a record of subsidence that may permit the forcasting of similar occurrences in other cases; the data were supplied largely by R. B. Lee, city engineer of Hutchinson, Kans. About eleven years ago, ground movement occurred at a neighboring salt plant, when the surface assumed the form of a shallow funnel. Movement was probably due to a flow of sand into a well through a poor seal or a broken casing. The salt deposit increases in thickness from the east until at Hutchinson, where the subsidence occurred, it is about 310 ft. thick. The interbedded layers of shale vary in thickness from mere traces to about 7 ft. While knowledge of the shale content of the beds is not exact, the log of a shaft 3 miles east of Hutchinson indicates that shale forms about 25 per cent. of the total thickness. This shaft does not reach the bottom of the salt by about 60 ft., but there is no reason to think that the lower part of the bed is different from the upper. Logs of wells sunk to the bottom are not sufficiently detailed to be of much value. Above the salt is the shale of the well-known Red Beds. The thickness of this is variable, principally because of its eroded surface, but at the mine it is 340 ft. This shale is variable in character and strength, but contains no strong members of limestone or sandstone. If the support is removed, very probably it will subside. The Arkansas River flows across the salt district and Hutchinson is situated on the flood plain. Between the top soil, which is about 8 ft. thick, and the shale is 60 to 100 ft. of water-bearing sand and gravel. The process of removing salt, at least in the case of the earlier wells with which we are concerned, is as follows: An 8-in. hole is put down through the sand and gravel by means of a drive pipe, which is bedded in the shale. Prom the top of the shale, a 6411. hole is drilled through the shale, to, or nearly to, the bottom of the salt. Casing is put in to a depth of about 140 ft. to shut off a water-bearing layer in the shale.

INTRODUCTION There is no hard and fast rule on whether functions within a company, diversified or otherwise, should be strongly centralized or decentralized. In all diverse organizations, there are certain basic functions which remain common (or central) to each element of the business, viz: Personnel Management Cash Management Taxation Management Legal Planning Accounting Standards It would follow that each of these common factors requires some supervision at a central level to ensure that overall group objectives are met. It is true that other functions including: Industrial Relations Marketing and Distribution Production Research and Development Purchasing Management Accounting may also be common to each element of the organization. However, there is far less commonality in the degree to which these functions are central to the efficient performance and financial well-being of the business. Role of Operating Units The resources of operating centers may be viewed as a bank of funds, the nature of which can be changed from time to time, but the employment of which must provide for ongoing increases in the net worth of the total enterprise expressed in terms of market values. Operating units are required to continually review products, methods, and opportunities and to monitor avenues for incremental investment--all with a view to attaining the necessary additive net present value of future cash flows of the enterprise. Operating units should be permitted sufficient autonomy to enable the best use to be made of the skills and experience of the people it employs in order to produce a return appropriate to the value of assets employed. Role of Head Office The head office will typically comprise a specialist group--the leaner the better if one strongly adopts the decentralist approach--often acting as Service Centers but also performing a control function in the corporate sense. The head office function is a cost center. It may be instrumental in developing strategies for increasing revenues or reducing costs on a group scale, but it does not generate revenue. Every dollar spent on this function is an extra dollar to be generated by the operating centers in order to achieve an increase in corporate wealth. TREASURY MANAGEMENT Treasury management is concerned with the provision of finance, cash-flow management, and risk analysis. Each decision taken within the enterprise has a cash implication. It follows that a well-integrated central Treasury function can, in all likelihood, produce economic benefits. The degree to which the function should be centralized depends largely upon the unique nature of the operating units it is servicing. Levels of ownership, the calibre of unit operating managers, and the nature and geographic distribution of the business are all factors determining the degree to which the Treasury function is centralized. In the case of Peko-Wallsend, the Treasury Department is small, comprising four people. While divisional cash-flow management is largely decentralized, Treasury is responsible for the daily management of funds surplus to the immediate needs of operating units. PREVIOUS investigations 1,2 of Fe3P described by pearson3 and schubert4 show that Fe3P has a bct unit cell having four Fe3P tetrahedra centered around each lattice point. The space group is 14, No. 82, and all atoms occupy general positions 8(g). The cell dimensions3 are: a = 9.090, c = 4.446 kX, with an axial ratio of c/o = 0.4891. We have measured the lattice parameters of Fe3P, using a Fe as an internal temperature standard, at 23°, 414°, and 678°C and computed the thermal expansion over this temperature range. The Fe,P was prepared by melting under vacuum (after flushing with argon) a commercially pure iron and "ferrophosphor" in a high-frequency induction furnace. Part of the ingot was crushed for X-ray examination and for chemical analysis. X-ray diffraction and light microscopy indicated iron phosphide (Fe3P) present as the major constituent and a small amount (about 5 pct) of a Fe. Chemical analysis showed 0.05 wt pct Si, 0.008 wt pct N, 0.018 wt pet C, and less than 0.02 wt pct each of other metallic elements. X-ray diffraction powder patterns were obtained from a mixture of iron and Fe3P sealed in an evacuated quartz capsule using a Unicam high-temperature

Discussion of the paper of FRANKLIN MOELLER, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 343 to 354. K. A. PAULY, Schenectady, N. Y.-I read with interest Mr. Moeller's paper descriptive of the mechanical parts of the new electric hoist at the Granite Shaft of the North Butte Mining Co. and as the paper treats largely of the mechanical equipment I have little discussion to offer. There is, however, one question which I would like to ask and that is, why the discrepancy in hoisting cycles between the curves given in the paper read by Mr. Sykes for the American Institue of Electrical Engineers at San Francisco and those given in the paper under discussion? In Mr. Sykes' curves the acceleration period is shown to be 16 sec. for all depths from 2,000 to 4,000 ft. inclusive, while Mr. Moeller in Fig. 2 shows 25 sec. throughout the range and in Fig. 4 shows 35 sec. We at Hughes Tool Co. are extremely proud of the quality of the hardware and techniques introduced through our efforts in tunnel-machine development and of the ready acceptance of them by manufacturers and contractors throughout the world. All of us who attended the conference and who are represented in the book, we believe, anticipate an increasing need for improved methods of underground excavation. The development of such methods will permit the further exploitation of our underground resources plus providing underground space for transportation and habitation at a rate compatible with demand. We hope that our comments, derived from the application of Hughes Tool Co.'s rotary boring experience, may provide a better understanding of the boring method as a possible avenue through which the desired improvement in underground excavation may be attained. We hope you may also become aware of some of the problems Hughes, as a pioneer developer of raise, shaft, and tunnel-boring equipment, must face prior to further major undertakings in this very interesting field. Our task is to acquaint you with the present status of the Hughes Tool Co. development program as it relates specifically to tunnel-boring machines. We feel this task can best be accomplished by a brief review of the general sequence of events leading to and constituting an equipment development program and more specifically the manner in which these events have occurred to either influence or further our boring-machine development program. The development of a machine to accomplish a certain function or series of functions is usually a very long and tedious process to which any number of individuals must contribute, perhaps over a period of centuries. Of particular irony is the fact that often those who contribute most generously do not necessarily reap the greatest immediate benefit. A marketable ma- chine will, however, result from a sequence of events such as these: 1) A problem or need is defined. 2) An idea is born to eliminate the problem.

At the Miami plant of the International Smelting Co., Inspiration, Ariz., there are four reverberatory furnaces, all 120 ft. long. At present only one of these furnaces is in operation. It is operated as a wet-charge furnace, the charge being distributed for about 65 ft. down the furnace length. Usually this charge contains about 12 per cent moisture and runs 25 per cent sulfur, of which there is eliminated in the furnace from 25 to 30 per cent. The furnace is oil-fired, the fuel being burned in a battery of Cananea-type, low-pressure burners. The flame is kept short and conditions so adjusted as to obtain complete combustion within the furnace. The average furnace draft, taken through the verb arch, amounts to only 0.02 in. of H2O. Draft is purposely kept low to cut down infiltration through the flues and boiler settings, and control dampers are regulated to maintain this uniform condition throughout the charging as well as the smelting period. Hot gases discharge from the furnace uptake through a common header flue to the waste-heat boilers. The general layout and dimensions of the plant are shown in Fig. 1. Four Stirling boilers, two of class M-26 (713 hp.) and two class M-31 (850 hp.), serve the furnace. Three usually are sufficient to take care of normal operation, the fourth boiler being used as a spare when necessary. The distribution of hot gases to the various boilers is regulated by the dampers in the boiler exit flues. Normally the boilers closest to the furnace uptake would evaporate more water than do those farther away, but dampers are regulated so as to distribute fairly well the load between the several boilers. Steam from the waste-heat plant is delivered to the adjoining power house of the Inspiration company, where it is used both in the Nordberg blowing engines and for electrical generation. Steam pressures and temperatures recorded are those in the main power-plant header and are thus inclusive of all losses in about 500 ft. of 10-in. line. Steam for smelter heating and auxiliary use is taken from the main waste-heat header, is reduced to 125 lb. and distributed through separate lines. Boiler feed water is supplied by the power plant and consists of returned condensate, augmented to a large extent by make-up water

During the radium boom in the early part of the twentieth century, the basic chemistry of uranium was fairly well defined. Uranium production has progressed from the status of a radium by-product to a very important industry. With the ever increasing need for more efficient and cheaper methods of processing uranium ores, new techniques are being developed. Since uranium and vanadium often occur together in nature, the latter element will also be considered. As production rates, costs, and certain aspects of uranium chemistry are still classified by the Atomic Energy Commission, these will not be discussed. Domestic uranium deposits, in general, are composed of the minerals carnotite, which contains hexavalent uranium, and to a lesser extent, pitchblende and uraninite, which contain tetravalent uranium. Carnotite also usually contains vanadium. The uranium and vanadium contents of these ores vary considerably. The ores currently processed on the Colorado Plateau assay from 0.2 to 0.4 pct U and from trace amounts to 5.0 pct V. On the other hand, the phosphate rock deposits of the southeastern U. S., from which uranium is also recovered, contain only about 0.01 to 0.02 pct; processing of the

Attempts to locate domestic supplies of sillimanite have been unsuccessful until recently. This paper describes recent discoveries of sil-limonite-bearing schists in the Southeastern States, with emphasis on geology of the deposits, mineral composition, origin, and reserves. Statements concerning possible methods of mining, milling, and utilization of sillimanite are given. Results from refractory tests on a laboratory scale are summarized. SINCE 1917, when synthetic mullite was first used in spark plug porcelains, there has been a continued search for natural sillimanite. During the recent war this search was intensified, not only for sillimanite but also for any materials which could be used satisfactorily as a substitute for the imported kyanite from India. The Indian massive kya-nite does not decrepitate during calcination as does our domestic bladed kyanite, thus a coarse grog can be obtained from it. Some of the most promising domestic materials suited for high temperatures are limited in quantity. Massive topaz from Chesterfield County, S. C., showed promise of possessing desirable refractory properties; but the action of combined fluorine, liberated during calcination, upon equipment and surroundings, as well as a limited supply of ore and the presence of impurities discouraged its use. Residual lumps and boulders of massive kyanite, similar to the material imported from India, occur in Georgia. This material, like the massive topaz, is of limited quantity. Andalusite from California and dumortierite from Nevada are satisfactory high-temperature refractory materials. Their uses have been restricted to specialized products since the location and character of the deposits are such that large production is impractical. Sillimanite, like kyanite and andalusite, has the theoretical chemical composition of Al2SiO5. It has a hardness of 6 to 7; vitreous, silky to subadamantine luster; specific gravity of 3.2 to 3.3; and is gray to bluish gray in color. Under the binocular microscope, the crystals are transparent. The mineral may occur as dense, fibrous mats (fibrolite) composed of fibrous, sometimes radiating hair-like crystals in schist which are associated with igneous intrusions. Deposits of this type have widespread distribution, but none discovered to date appears to have commercial possibilities. Sillimanite also occurs as bundles of crystals disseminated in biotite schist, as noted in the Hart-Elbert-Madison County, Ga., area and in some of the South Carolina and North Carolina deposits. This type of material has been called prismatic sillimanite by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Deposits of this variety appear to offer commercial possibilities. When heated above 1650°C, sillimanite expands about 6.5 pct and is converted into a mixture of mullite (3Al2O3 . SiO2) and vitreous silica. This is a stable mixture which has a specific gravity of about 3.15. General Geology: Sillimanite (fibrolite) is a mineral common to the pre-Cambrian metasedi-ments of the Southeast. It occurs throughout the crystalline schists which lie between the Fall Line on the southeast and the established Paleozoic rocks on the northwest (fig. 1). By substituting photoelectric automatic car loading for mechanically induced hydraulic automatic loading and by protecting the process against operational failures, the engineering staff at International Minerals & Chemical Corp.'s Carlsbad potash mine has developed a reliable loading process that operates without an attendant. The photoelectric control, developed primarily because of frequent failures in the hydraulic control system, has not changed the basic loading operation and physical layout. Mine-run ore ranging in size from minus 200 mesh to 30-in. lumps is dumped onto a conveyor belt which discharges into a so-called "flop gate chute" which in turn, feeds the ore into six-ton capacity mine cars. Each car is filled progressively by moving the entire trip forward. When a car is filled 12 in. above its rim, the direction of flow into the car is reversed 180º and filling of the next car back is begun while the entire trip is moved forward again. Once the next car is properly spotted under the front chute, the flow is again directed to the forward position.

A new experimental technique has been developed to study nucleation behavior in eutectic alloys. It is somewhat similar to that applied by Sundquist and Mondolfo1 but with the advantages that: 1) bulk samples are undercooled instead of small droplets thus allowing the thermal behavior to be monitored by a thermocouple immersed in the sample, and 2) nucleation behavior is investigated in the same sample on either side of the eutectic composition by adding additional component to the sample under controlled conditions which preclude the addition of nu-cleation contaminants. Sundquist and Mondolfo carried out ]nucleation ex-periments on a large number of eutectic alloy sys-tems and concluded that nonreciprocal nucleation operated. If one phase a was a good nucleant for the other phase 0, then B was a poor nucleant for a. This was determined experinlentally by comparing the nucleation temperatures of 100 to 300 u diameter droplets of hypereutectic and hypoeutectic composition cooled from above the liquidus and from a temperature between the liquidus and the eutectic temperature. Primary phase a was concluded to be an efficient nucleant for the other phase B, if the following experimental result was obtained. Referring to Fig. 1, the temperature TI at which a drop of hypereutectic alloy of composition B froze when cooled from above the B liquidus was noted. This was the nucleation temperature for B in the absence of a. A drop of hypoeutectic alloy of composition A was then frozen from temperature T2 between the a liquidus and the eutectic temperature. The temperature T3 at which the eutectic nucleated in the presence of the primary or proeutec-tic a was noted. If this temperature T3 was higher than the temperature TI at which the B nucleated in a hypereutectic alloy, it was concluded that the primary a had nucleated the 6. Sundquist and Mondolfo1 found that faceted primary crystals were good nucle-ants for metals that grow as orthogonal dendrites when present as the primary phase. Jackson2 has questioned Sundquist and Mondolfo's technique and proposed that in Sundquist and Mon-dolfo's samples, such as composition A, primary a retained B in reentrant grooves at their surfaces when heated to a temperature above the eutectic but below the a liquidus. THE Omaha District, Corps of Engineers, has been doing subsurface exploration work for a number of years, both by contract and with its own forces. Certain practices and procedures concerning the recovery of large diameter cores have been developed which will be described in this paper. GEOLOGY Most of the drilling to date has been in connection with structures on the main stem of the Missouri River above Sioux City, Iowa. A wide variety of subsurface conditions has been encountered. The bedrock formations appear in regular order from the oldest to the youngest, traveling upstream; or in other words, the general regional dip is to the northwest. The oldest formation is the Carlile shale, a compaction or noncemented waxy shale of Cretaceous age. Because of its uncemented, soft nature this shale has a tendency to grind or wash away when drilled. It also has a tendency to rebound or expand when the overlying pressures are removed. A 25-ft bed of sharp, friable sandstone called the Codell member is present near the top of the Carlile shale. This member is a cemented sediment, but in drilling, many of the sand grains are broken loose and exert extensive abrasive action on the core barrel and bit. Above the Carlile shale is the Niobrara chalk, a soft calcareous deposit with shaly horizons and some thin beds of bentonitic clay. The average thickness of this deposit is about 145 ft. It is soft enough to be sawed or bored with ordinary woodworking tools, yet is compact enough to be used as building block. The Pierre shale, the formation above the Niobrara chalk, is over 800 ft in thickness and is the most widespread material in the area. It is a dark colored, compaction shale containing numerous thin bentonitic clay seams and at certain horizons, hard manganese concretions. The shale has numerous faults and in addition, along the valley walls, has undergone considerable - slumping. Joints, fault planes and slickensided surfaces are common features encountered in drilling and add to the difficulties of high core recovery. East of the Missouri River the bedrock is generally covered with from 100 to 200 ft of glacial till, composed of clays, silts, sands, gravels and boulders. The valley itself is filled with alluvial deposits, mostly of the sand and gravel sizes, and contains a buried preglacial or interglacial channel over 100 ft in depth. The overburden deposits require sampling in connection with engineering studies and must also be cased before the underlying bedrock can be cored. The diameter of the required overburden samples can thus have an indirect effect on the size of core recovered from the bedrock. 0. R. LYONS*—I know that we are all interested in hearing about problems that other people have. To most of the people from the eastern part of the United States, this kind of coal preparation is completely different. It represents washing difficulties that most operators have never experienced, or, if they have, they have refused to consider them because there are coals that are much easier to wash and, therefore. they leave the more difficult ones alone for the time being. E. R. McMILLAN†—I think the au-thors have summarized the material very well. Dr. Yancey has spent a great many years in the study of washing coals, as has Mr. Geer. I might comment briefly on some of the plants that were mentioned, plants with which I have had some con-nection, particularly those of our own company, the Northwestern Improve-ment Co. I would like to point out this: that ill each case, a great deal of work was done in the way of preliminary studies of washability of the coal before plants were built. The first plant of any size built in Roslyn field was mentioned in the paper. This central cleaning plant was designed and built to handle coal from three different mines. I might say that prior to 1935, the year in which the plant was built, the coal was used largely as railway fuel, close to a million tons annually. But as mining increased in depth, it became increasingly difficult to separate and gob much of the impurities underground, with the result that the run-of-mine coal became so high in ash that the railroad eventually was forced to consider installing some kind of preparation plant at the mine. We spent about a year in preliminary studies in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines to find out the best type of plant that would clean the coal. The result, as Mr. Geer has explained to you, is a rather complicated plant, but it is doing a very satisfactory job. We have, however, made a number of changes and improve-n~euts since it was first built. The last addition was the, installation of a cen- trifugal drier to dewater the minus ¼ in. size. We are now contemplating installing heat driers for further drying of minus ¼ in. We use Vissac heat driers for drying the stoker coal, the ¾ to in. The demand for drier coal, for both railway and industrial use, is forcing us to further drying of the coal. The plant that was mentioned as having been built in Pierce County, during the war, was a government sponsored plant. I happen to have had some connection with its design, construction and initial operation. We did what we thought then, and still think, was a very thorough job of preliminary studies in cooperation with the Burea of Mines of the coal from that field. The plant was as good a plant as could be built with the equipment available at that time, 1943. The plant that was mentioned as having been built at Ravensdale for treating the McKay coal was rebuilt about two years ago, and in addition to the modified Elmore jig washer that was mentioned. we added a coucentrating table for re-cleaning the minus 3/32 in. A modification of Le Claire's microscopic model for self-diffusion is developed in a form suitable for prediction of activation energies for diffusion in disordered substitutional solutions as well as in pure metals Bonding is considered as a localized interaction, and the energy of bonding between atoms of different types is taken as the arithmetic mean of the energies in the pure elements. The activation energies for vacancy formation and migration in substitutional alloys are shown to depend on the empirical constants developed for self-diffusion when the equations are adjusted for the mole fractions of the two elements. The differences in activation energies between alloys and pure metals are calculated and compared with the experimental differences. MaNY different correlations have been proposed for use in predicting activation energies for self-diffusion or diffusion in dilute alloys. Usually theories for self-diffusion cannot be applied to alloys nor can theories for dilute alloys be satisfactorily adapted to self-diffusion. We present here a correlation scheme which can approximate activation energies for diffusion, vacancy formation, and atom migration in substitutional-alloy systems of any concentration. The activation energy for self-diffusion QD has been correlated to the melting temperature Tm,1, 2 the sublimation energy L,,l the heat of fusion Lf,3 crystal structure, and valence.4 Working with mechanical parameters Le claire5 proposed that the activation energy for vacancy migration Qm could be related to appropriate shear moduli. He also proposed that the activation energy for vacancy formation 62, is proportional to Ls. THEORY We consider that Le Claire's expression for 4, is satisfactory. But an alternate expression for Qm in terms of the bulk modulus is just as satisfactory from a theoretical point of view for the prediction of the energy of vacancy migration in pure metals and can more easily be used for alloys. In order for Qm to be a minimum, not only the moving atom but also adjacent and nearby atoms must undergo distortions. These distortions are neither isotropic as is implied by a correlation with the bulk modulus nor unidirectional as implied by a correlation with a shear modulus, but are complex and multidirectional. A complete analysis in terms of the bulk modulus and all the shear moduli is not yet available. In a first approximation in which only one parameter is used, there is no obvious theoretical reason to prefer the shear modulus over the bulk modulus. The bulk modulus is a much more convenient parameter for use in predicting Qm. Shear moduli are known for less than half of the metallic elements while bulk moduli are usually available. Furthermore, because of the directional dependence of shear moduli, their estimation for alloys appears inherently more difficult than is the estimation of bulk moduli. We assume that the bulk modulus Bs reflects an average value of the shear moduli such that the strain energy at the point of maximum distortion of the lattice during vacancy migration can be expressed as

A recent paper by Thomas1 has presented new data on the solubility of hydrogen in solid silver at 1 atm pressure in the temperature range 600° to 963°C. However, no data is reported in the literature on hydrogen solubility in liquid silver. The Sieverts technique which has been described previously2,3 was used in the present work. Charges of approximately 160 g were melted in Morgan "purox" recrystallized alumina crucibles and purified helium was used for the determination of the "hot volume" during each experiment. A chemical analysis of the silver indicates that the impurity content (Cu + Al) is less than 0.02 wt pct. Hydrogen solubility in the temperature range 963° to 1200°C was investigated. The results of three experiments are shown in Table I. Fig. 1 shows an Arrhenius plot of the present work together with the solid-state data of Thomas, Steacie, and johnson,4 Eichenauer et al.,5 and Siegelin et al.6 The following expression has been derived from the Arrhenius plot of the present data: log (solubility of hydrogen, cm3 per 100 g) = 2.154-3512.0/ToK The heat of solution derived from Fig. 1 is 31,150 cal per g mole H2 compared with the value of 33,020 cal per g mole H2 obtained by Thomas and 12,000 cal per g mole H2 obtained from the data of Steacie. It was observed that hydrogen evolution took place when the silver melts were solidified under 1 atm of hydrogen, which would not be expected from an extrapolation of the results of Steacie. Schenck and Lange7 have observed that, for several transition metals at their melting points, the ratio of the hydrogen solubility in the liquid to that in the solid lies in the range 2.1 to 3.1.
