A method has been developed for calculating the average pressure in a bounded reservoir. The reservoir is first divided into the individual drainage volumes of each well, by using the criterion that at steady state each individual drainage volume is proportional to a well's production rate. The average pressure in each drainage volume is then calculated by a method developed in the report. By volumetrically averaging these individual drainage volume pressures, the average pressure in the entire reservoir is obtained. To calculate the average pressure in each drainage volume, a correction is applied to the ordinary extrapolated pressure, i.e., the pressure obtained by extrapolating to infinite time the linear portion of the graph of closed-in pressure versus log[?t/(t + ?t)], where At is the closed-in time and t the production time. The correction, which is a function of the production time, is presented in graphical form for different shapes of the drainage area (horizontal cross section of the drainage volume). INTRODUCTION It is important to be able to find the volumetric average pressure in a reservoir so that the size of the reservoir may be determined from material balance calculations. It is also desirable to be able to find the approximate distribution of pressure within a reservoir for detection of fluid movement. 'The purpose of this paper is to present a method for calculating both the average reservoir pressure and the approximate distribution of pressure within a bounded reservoir — that is, a reservoir with no water drive. In reservoirs where the pressure builds up rapidly after wells are shut in, the determination of average pressure generally poses little problem, for one often need only average the final buildup pressures. It is when pressure buildup is slow that difficulties arise. For practical and economical reasons, the time allowable for closing in wells is limited. If at the maximum allowable closed-in time the pressure has not reached a con- stant value (and this is more often the case than is generally realized), calculation of average pressure presents difficulties. One method which has been used in the past for obtaining an "average" pressure involves the extrapolation to infinite closed-in time of curves of pressure as a function of closed-in time. Contour maps of these extrapolated pressures are used in arriving at an average pressure. In some cases wells are shut in for arbitrary Lengths of time, and contours of these arbitrary shut-in pressures are used for calculation. All these methods are somewhat arbitrary and suffer from lack of fundamental theoretical basis. For example, no precise meaning can be given either to the extrapolated or to the arbitrary shut-in pressure. Furthermore, there seems to be no reason why either set of pressures should be contourable. It was because of the vagueness of these old methods and their lack of a sound theoretical basis that, the present method for determining average reservoir pressure was developed. A new apparatus termed a "distribution analyzer" is introduced to ascertain the optimum conditions of electrostatic separation of minerals. It was found that with similar surface condition, testing environment and a constant feed rate of not higher than one layer of particles fed on the grounded roll of the separator, the behavior of each component mineral in a synthetic mixture or ore is roughly similar to that of the same mineral when tested alone.

THE world-wide continuation of low prices for zinc in 1934 has militated against any striking changes in the position of the metal. The price of zinc in London at the end of the year, about £11 5/8 per long ton, or 2.5c per pound at the existing rate of exchange, is more than 25 per cent below the average price for last year. In these circumstances probably the most significant event of the year was the putting into operation of the new electrolytic plant of the Giesches company at Magdeburg, Germany. This plant is designed to have an initial capacity of 20,000 long tons per year, and it is planned to increase this to 40,000 tons annually. This development is significant not only as indicating a continued swing of zinc metallurgy towards electrolytic methods, but also because it will make Germany virtually independent of foreign sources of zinc. This will mean that the zinc tonnage normally exported to Germany from Belgium and Poland will. become available for other markets, and it is feared may lead to lower prices unless the production of Bel-

MANY producers have held that the only workable quicksilver ore is easily recognized by its .cinnabar content. In most cases this is true. A noticeable exception is a. particular opalite deposit where part of the ore now being mined in considerable quantity shows only the yellow mineral, calomel, or its alteration products. This mineral, on exposure to the sunlight, quickly becomes coated with gray or black layers that may be removed by scraping to reveal the yellow mineral beneath. The blackening of this mercuric chloride on exposure to sunlight shows reaction to form metallic mercury, which is usually plainly present in this class of ore.

The mining laws relating to winding-ropes in some of the German provinces are very strict, and severe tests have to be periodically made to see that the ropes in use come up to the prescribed standard. A few notes on the method of testing the ropes and the results obtained may be of interest to the members of the Institute. Permission must be given by the Inspector of Mines to put up a winding-plant; and previous to installation a full report made by the manager, clearly setting forth all details of the shaft, the pit-head, engines and appliances appertaining thereto has to be sent to the mining officials. Accompanying each subsequent report, further details, such as the name of the firm supplying the rope, construction, quality of steel, date of installment, weight per meter, length, particulars of the safetycatches, cages, etc., must be given. At least one spare rope must be kept at ever? shaft ready for use in case of emergency. The rope must hang in the shaft, with cage attached, not less than twenty-four hours before it is used for winding; and it must have undergone a severe test in the manner hereafter described. The laws prescribe that when a rope is continually in use it must be tested every three months; but if the rope is only used every few days it must be tested at least every six months, in the presence of the superior officer; and notification of the date of testing has to be sent to the Bergrath two days before the test is made, in order that he can personally superintend the operation if he chooses. Should winding have been stopped for a long time, it is not necessary to test every six months; but before the rope can be used again it must be tested.

THE Smuggler-Union mine is in the upper San Miguel mining district near Telluride, Colo., and the group of claims now forming the property were first worked in 1875. Development was slow until the completion of the railroad in 1890, when it pro- ceeded rapidly. In 1896 four hundred stamps were dropping in the district, the production was $3,000,000. A geologic section of the country rocks, where ex-posed by erosion from the valley at 8700 ft. to the sum-mit at 13,500 ft., shows the sedimentaries made up of flat-bedded sandstones and conglomerates, of the Jura-Trias, superimposed at 9700 ft. by a series of bedded rocks of igneous origin, andesites and andesite breccia. These rocks extend 3000 ft. to the rhyolite capping, largely fragmentary, which occurs at 13,000 ft. The ore horizon is, so far as known, contained in the 3000 ft. of' andesite and breccia. The Smuggler vein is a fault fissure which, with its extension to the north, the Humboldt vein, contains one of the longest continuously mined orebodies in the world. The length of the orebody so far developed is approximately 9000 ft. The width of the valuable part of the vein is, however, narrow, 3 ft. being the average, and the depth to which it has been worked up to the present is 2500 feet. There are several crossing and branch veins, all of which have been more or less productive. Of these, the so-called Flat vein, discovered in 1915, with its pro-duction of nearly 2,000,000 tons, has been the most important. This vein joins the Smuggler at an acute angle in the northern section of the property. North of the junction the two veins lie side by side and form an orebody of importance which gives promise of exten-sion with depth. The valuable metals of both the Smug-gler and Flat veins are gold, lead and silver. In the former silver is more important than lead, and the reverse relation holds in the latter.

PRESIDENT DOWLING'S ? ADDRESS I feel that it is a great honor to be invited to reply to this toast on behalf of the Canadian Mining Institute. I wish to thank you for your very cordial reception of the toast and for the sentiments expressed in your invitation to the Institute to cooperate in a series of joint meetings. It is an earnest of the mutual regard which the peoples of the two countries have for each other. We have been allies in a very great war and the feelings of good-will engendered by that alliance will survive, I believe, through the strenuous times of peace. The other nations of the alliance had through many changes in history, fought each other and for each other and had thereby gained a clear conception of the social aims and moral character of their peoples. With this knowledge came mutual trust-the one element necessary for united action or lasting agreement. On this continent the two peoples are drawn together by bonds of a common origin and, largely, a common language. No war has been necessary to force declarations of national aims on which to base terms of amity and now our peoples who had studied the arts of peace together have together passed through fire-drawn into the conflict by a like horror at the sacrilege of the crucifixion of the rights of humanity. Their courage and manhood has been tested at Ypres and Chateau Thiery by the great assayer war, and, together, with thankful hearts we see the triumph of right over night and better than ever know that we have the same conception of the government of the people for the people. We are met to celebrate the close of the association of our brethren it the front in the fight for freedom for the world-a freedom that to us hems natural but which to the majority of the allied nations is a heritage derived from the protest made by the American colonies against German ideas of government of which remnants had until then survived in Great Britain.

The objective of this paper is to present a better method for determining reservoir reserves of gas from extended drawdown test data. Means are proposed for conducting the test with or without the requirement of prior build-up to a static reservoir pressure. The test is based upon solutions to unsteady-state gas flow developed in an earlier paper and is believed to be superior to previous methods for determining reserves from flow-test data. The limitatiom of such tests are discussed, with emphasis on the subject of test duration. The test can supply useful information if the mechanics and limitations of it are understood. This type of information can be particularly valuable in deciding whether or not to drill offsets to producing wells. INTRODUCTION In the life of any gas or oil field, the engineer in charge must decide if certain wells need stimulation and whether or not to drill more wells in the field. Well production tests can aid in making these decisions. For instance, the value of stimulation can be estimated by determining formation permeability and the amount of well damage from drawdown or build-up tests. These tests are freely used in the oil industry. A less well-known type of analysis uses data from extended drawdown tests for determining reservoir reserves. Into this category fits the "reservoir limit test" of Jones,'-3 and the "reservoir reserve test" presented in this paper. The chief value of these tests is their ability to "see" reservoir boundaries and thus prevent costly dry holes. Methods for determining reserves of both gas and oil reservoirs were proposed in the work of Jones. His proposals appear sound for single-phase liquid flow. The generality of his work on gas flow is open to question, however, since the analysis is based upon solutions to liquid-flow equations. The test for gas reserves presented here is derived from unsteady-state gas-flow solutions presented in a previous paper.' In deriving this reservoir reserve test, it has been assumed that all of the reservoir energy is provided by expansion of the reservoir fluid and that the reservoir is radially symmetrical. No mention has been made of the effects of deviations from Darcy's law such as quadratic (turbulent) flow and well damage. Since the terms representing these effects are function of rate only, since the rate is constant and since the data are plotted in a differential form, it seems reasonable that these terms will not affect the test results in any way. No attempt has been made to estimate the effects of water drive, faults, or other departures from an idealized and isolated reservoir. Internal friction measurements were used to determine the effect of manganese on the solubility and precipitation kinetics of nitrogen. Manganese, in concentrations up to 0.75 pct, has little effect on the solubility at temperatures above 250°C. On the other hand, at Concentrations as low as 0.15 pct, manganese inhibits the formation of iron nitrides, especially Fe4N, even though it may not form a precipitnte itself. The precipitation and solubility of carbides and nitrides have been extensively investigated in the pure Fe-C and Fe-N systems.1-3 In recent years, some effort has been ispent in studying the influence of substitutional alloying elements on the behavior of carbon and nitrogen in ferrite.4 -7 In particular Fast, Dijkstra, and Sladek have investigated the effect of 0.5 pct Mn on the internal friction and hardness during the quench aging of Fe-Mn-N alloys.', ' They found that at low temperatures (below 200°C) the presence of 0.5 pct Mn greatly retarded quench aging. For example, after 66 hr at 200°C very little precipitation had taken place in the iron alloyed with manganese, whereas precipitation was complete after a few minutes in a pure Fe-N alloy. The effect of varying the manganese content and the details of the precipitation process were not mentioned in these papers. Fast' postulated that manganese causes a local lowering of the free energy of the lattice with a resulting segregation of nitrogen atoms to these low energy sites. The segregated nitrogen atoms are bound so tightly to the manganese atoms that they cannot form a precipitate. The internal friction measurements of Dijkstra and Sladek tended to confirm the concept of segregation of nitrogen around manganese atoms, and the increase in free energy on transferring a mole of nitrogen atoms from a segregated to a "normal" lattice site was computed to be - 2800 cal. Dijkstra and Sladek9 distinguished between two types of precipitates: ortho, a nitride of appreciably different manganese content than that of the matrix, and para, a nitride with a manganese content essentially that of the matrix. With each type of precipitate a solubility, again designated ortho or para, can be associated. Since the internal friction maximum in alloys which were aged several hours at 600" C dropped almost to zero, Dijkstra and Sladek9 concluded that the ortho solubility must be very low. The effect of temperature on the ortho and para solubilities has no1: been investigated. There are obviously several gaps in our knowledge concerning the influence of manganese on the behavior of nitrogen in a-iron. It was the purpose of the experiments described in this paper to determine the following: 1) The ortho and para solubilities of nitrogen as a function of temperature. 2) The details of the precipitation process at elevated temperatures. 3) The effect of varying the manganese concentration on the above phenomena. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Internal friction is conveniently employed in studying the precipitation of nitrides and/or carbides from a -iron because it is one of the few parameters, perhaps the only one, which is not affected by the presence of the precipitate itself. For this reason, internal friction techniques were heavily relied upon in the present experiment. A) Preparat of -. All specimens were prepared from electrolytic iron and electrolytic manganese. Alloys containing 0.15, 0.33, 0.65, and 0.75 wt pct Mn were vacuum melted and cast into 25 lb ingots. After being hot rolled to 3/4 in. bars, the ingots were swaged and drawn to 0.030 in. wires. The wires wen? decarburized and denitrided by annealing at 750° C for 17 hr in flowing hydrogen saturated with warer vapor. To obtain a medium grain size, - 0.1 mm, the wires were then heated to 945oC, allowed to soak for 1 hr, furnace cooled to 750°C, and water quenched. Subsequent internal friction measurements showed that this procedure reduced the nitrogen and carbon concentrations of the alloys to less than 0.001 wt pct. The wires were nitrided by sealing them in pyrex capsules containing anhydrous ammonia and annealing them for 24 hr at 580°C, the nitrogen being retained in solid solution by quenching the capsule into water. Immediately after quenching, the wires were stored in liquid nitrogen to prevent any precipitation of nitrides. By varying the pressure of ammonia in the capsule, it was possible to produce any desired nitrogen concentration. B) Internal Friction. POTENTIAL differences between strata of shale and sandstone have been recognized for about 15 years, and they form the basis of the electrical logging of oil wells. Hitherto these potentials have been ascribed solely to electrochemical reactions caused by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole through which they are generally measured. Observations by the author in wells empty of water and in a mine shaft suggest that potential differences between sandstones and shales are natural and specific properties of the rocks, although they are modified to measurement by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole. The cause of these potentials probably is to be sought in the relative polar adsorptive capacities of quartz and clay particles.

Application of technology to the search for new deposits went on apace in 1963. Traditional methods, aided by modern communications, were successful in some out-of-the way corners of the world that had not been adequately prospected, but the co-ordination of several mutually supporting techniques is necessary to define exploration targets in most areas today. Although these obviously include geophysics and geochemistry, which are treated elsewhere in this issue, geology continues to play a major role. As the search focuses on less and less obvious targets there will be more need than ever to "pull out all the stops." Any anomaly may have significance and must be evaluated as a possible lead. Ability to detect them increases as the laboratory workers refine techniques for measuring physical, chemical, and isotopic properties; it will be increasingly the responsibility of the exploration geologist to understand and apply these to economic problems. Simple propecting, the search for outcrops of recognizable ores of traditional types, was perhaps most successful for iron. Potentially large deposits of high-grade magnetite-specularite-hematite ore have been found in the Mary River area near the north end of Baffin Island. The ore holds up four hills that stand some 1500 ft above the surrounding country; obviously they were ripe for discovery by the first person to come across them, in this case Murray Watts, president of British Ungava Explorations, Ltd, As preliminary examination indicates a lump ore averaging 68 to 70% iron, these deposits may be commercial in spite of the unfavorable climate and their isolation from world markets.

As EARLY AS 1824, Haidinger1 described crystals of native copper that were, according to Dana,2 "probably twinned parallel to the octahedral plane and normal to this axis." In 1837, Rose3 very clearly demonstrated that native copper crystals were commonly twinned on the octahedral plane. Lasaulx,4 in 1882, described polysynthetic octahedral twins and stated that enclosed twinning lamellae were observed. Even on crystals formed artificially by electrolysis, twinning was observed as early as 1886, by Brown.5 Many other descriptions of twinning in native copper and in gold and silver are to be found in the literature, and in every case with which we are acquainted the twinning is conformable to the spinel law; i. e., the octahedral plane is both twinning and composition plane. Metallurgists have long been familiar with the straight-sided bars or bands that commonly occur within the irregularly outlined grains of metallic crystalline aggregates. They are certainly found in nearly all metals of the face-centered cubic type after cold working and annealing. If a specimen showing these bands is rotated, keeping the angle of incidence of the illuminating beam constant, they usually exchange color contrast periodically with their respective matrix crystals. Also slip lines, when produced in these specimens, nearly always show a change in direction upon passing through the bands, giving rise to the "stairway" effect often illustrated in metallurgical textbooks. Apparently the only quantitative observations on bands of this sort were made by Osmond and Cartaud6 on austenitic steel. They selected,

It has been observed that upon invasion of a sand containing oil or gas and connate water by mud filtrate the hydrocarbons are more rapidly flushed by the filtrate than is the connate water.' In time, it appears that the following displacement pattern emerges: oil (or gas) is being swept ahead by connate water which, in turn, is pushed by invading fluid. Eventually the connate water may have "banked up" sufficiently to form a zone of appreciable thickness leading the invading front. In the extreme case, Fig. 1 shows how the situation will develop.' Immediately adjacent to the borehole (radius r) there is a zone, the invaded zone proper, where the connate water has been flushed out completely and which contains only residual oil or gas and mud filtrate. This zone (extending out to a radius ri) grades more or less abruptly into the next (thickness A), which contains only residual hydrocarbon and connate water. Beyond it, again more or less sharply bounded, extends the virgin formation with the original interstitial water saturation Sw. The various saturations are indicated in Fig. 1. The three zones generally will be marked by resistivity contrasts owing to their different fluid contents. As the connate water is usually more saline than the invading fluid, the second zone having a high connate water saturation forms a concentric cylindrical ring or annulus of low resistivity R, around the borehole.',' It will be referred to as the "low zone." Fig. 1 shows schematically the resistivity profile. It is clear that the phenomenon of a low zone could not occur in invaded water sands. The presence of a low zone, therefore, would be a qualitative indication of a hydrocarbon-bearing formation. Granted that the phenomenon is real, if it were pronounced enough to be detected, one might thereby have a means of locating oil or gas in the ground. This is the aim of the "displacement logging" method.' In any case, the presence of a low resistivity zone will affect the reading of electric logs. Using conventional log interpretation techniques, one must be aware of this and, if necessary, correct for it. Whether correction or detection should be the goal will depend primarily on the magnitude of the effect. The type of log which is likely to be affected most is the induction log. The current pattern of an induction log is concentric with the borehole. Any concentric ring of low resistivity, therefore, will tend to become crowded by current lines. This zone of maximum current density will obscure the relative contributions to the current conduction by other portions of a bed making, for instance, the contribution of the virgin formation less significant and thus detracting from the value or the induction log as an R, reading device. The present note is intended to ascertain the maximum possible effect of a low zone in the extreme case portrayed by Fig. 1 on three commercially available types of induction logs, sc., 5 FF 27, 5 FF 40 and 3 F 60. Type 5 FF 27 or 5 PF 40 is currently run in conjunction with a 16 in. normal and SP log. This combination is gradually replacing the regular electric survey (two normals and one lateral) as a standard log in many areas. On the basis of the scheme of Fig. 1 (sharp boundaries between successive zones), the thickness of the low zone may be computed for various amounts of infiltration measured by the ratio of invaded zone diameter to hole diameter D,/d. Referring to Fig. 1, we can set up a material balance for the water displaced from the invaded zone proper and the water present in the low zone. THE electrolytic zinc plant of the American Zinc Co. of Illinois was described by Davidson' in 1944. Since then, improvements as well as expansion of the plant facilities have been made. In order to increase the production of high grade zinc which was needed for war purposes, an expansion program designed to double the slab zinc capacity was started in 1942 and completed in March 1943. This expansion was propagated by a contract between the American Zinc Co. of Ill. and the Defense Plant Corp. The contract included the facilities of the Fairmont City, Ill., property of the American Zinc Co., where a suspension-type roaster with contact acid plant, cadmium distillation furnace, Waelz oxide and densifying plant, and horizontal retort furnaces were installed. The expanded Monsanto, Ill., plant and the additional facilities of' the Fairmont plant were designed to integrate the metallurgical treatment of zinc concentrates for the production of special high grade zinc at Monsanto with the production of acid, cadmium, high grade zinc from furnace skimmings and the Waelz treatment of leach residue at Fairmont. In general, the original flowsheet was not changed, except for the addition of the filtering, drying and reclaiming of leach residue, and the treatment of purification cake for the recovery of copper, cadmium sponge, and zinc. Fig. 1 is a flow diagram of present operations. The original plant facilities, desi-gned for 50 tons daily production of slab zinc, had some units which were more than adequate. Therefore, in expanding the facilities to 100 tons per day, it was not necessary to double all operating components. Table I gives the comparison of the changes made in the unit operating components for the original facilities, 1941, the 1943 expansion, and the 1951 facilities. During the past 11 years a number of improvenients have been made resulting in: 1—an increase in slab production, 2—higher recoveries on the calcine treated, 3—better quality of slab zinc produced, 4—higher current efficiencies, and 5—less man hours Table I. Previous gas well test analyses have been based mainly upon linearizations of ideal gas flow results, although a method for drawdown analysis based upon real gas flow results has been proposed. Linearizations based upon ideal gas flow require estimation of gas physical properties at Tome sort of average pressure, and implicitly involve the assumption that pressure gradients are small everywhere in the reservoir. A new real gas flow equation has been developed by means of a substitution which couples presTure, viscosity and gas law deviation factor. This sub-stitution has been called the real gas pseudo-pressure. Use of the real gas pseudo-pressure leads to simple equations describing real gas flow which do not contain pressure-dependent gas properties, and which do not require the assumption of small pressure gradients everywhere in the flow system. Equations required to determine flow capacity, well condition and static formation pressure from pressure drawdown and build-up tests with the real gas pseudo-pressure concept are presented. Also shown are applications of the real gas pseudo-pressure to back-pressure testing, the gas materials balance and rigorous determination of average gas properties for previous gas flow equations. Included are sample calculations for well test analyses. INTRODUCTION A recent study' of the flow of the transient flow of real gases in ideal radial systems showed that it is possible to consider gas physical property dependence upon pressure by means of a substitution called the real gas pseudo-pressure. The substitution has the advantage that it enables engineering solutions for steady and transient flow of real gases that are more accurate and general than those previously available. The solutions are particularly important for the case of gas flow in tight, high-pressure formations under large drawdowns. Even for more ideal flow conditions, the real gas pseudo-pressure concept leads to important rules for finding average gas physical properties pertinent for older well test analyses. Ref. I provides a detailed study of the theory behind the real gas flow correlations to be used in this paper. The purpose of this paper is to provide necessary engineering forms for use of the real gas flow results, and to illustrate applications. The following considers flow of real gases in an ideal radial flow system. It is assumed that: (1) formation thickness, porosity, water saturation, absolute permeability, temperature and gas composition are constant; (2) gas compressibility and density are functions of pressure as described by the gas law pv = znRT; (3) gas viscosrty is a function of pressure; (4) effective permeability to gas may be a function of pressure to account for liquid condensation; (5) condensate is immobile; and (6) the formation has no dip.

Prediction of ventilation needs in long range mining projections requires serious consideration when formulating those projections. Predicting the behavior of the ventilation system of an old, complex mine poses an especially provocative problem. Air-flow around and through mined-out areas via bleeder systems, leakage flows through stoppings or other air control devices, and the use of multiple fans all add to the basic complexity of a ventilation system and make predictions of ventilation changes very difficult. Fortunately, the task of making ventilation decisions can be greatly assisted by ventilation surveying and computer simulation. The Nemacolin Mine of Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation, located in Southwestern Pennsylvania, is one such old mine which used the computerized approach successfully. A mine-wide pressure-quantity survey was used to obtain realistic values for airway resistance factors. These values, together with network topology, formed the basic input for computer simulation. Results from this simulation indicated that air quantities generated at critical airways by the model were generally within a couple of percent of those measured in the actual survey. It was then concluded that the model was acceptable for practical application, and it was used immediately for studying the effects on the ventilation system of changing the blade settings of fans. Additionally, the model was modified to incorporate projected mine development and used to predict future ventilation.

This account of a contrivance which has been found serviceable in practice may be of interest to engineers, and especially to those engaged in hydraulic mining. In that process, one feature which seems at first sight to possess little significance, is highly important in its effects—namely, the regular supply of water to the " giants." The chief condition of this regularity is an even flow in the pipe-line from the penstock to the nozzle.' This, of course, requires that the penstock be kept full. Any considerable surplus of water, overflowing at the penstock, is a simple waste, unless it be otherwise utilized in the sluices. At all events, it does not affect the delivery of the nozzles. But a deficiency at the penstock may admit air into the pipe; and this may produce hydraulic recoil, injuring the line by incessant vibrations, giving rise to leaks, and even to blow-outs, and (when a partial vacuum exists at the time of the fracture) the collapse of the pipe. An accident of this sort in our main pipe-line, occasioned partly by a settling of the ground and partly by the presence of air in the pipe, led to the employment of the device here described. The line referred to is made of 30-in. pipe, successively reduced to 18 and 15 in. in diameter, for the supply of two giants. By reason of the causes above mentioned, the 30-in. pipe burst more than 1,400 ft. from the penstock, and, despite the air-valve, the 30-in. pipe was collapsed to such a degree that one length of it, next to the penstock, was squeezed together and positively swallowed by the main pipe, through which it traveled for 750 ft., piercing through a short elbow on the way. This remarkable result was undoubtedly the effect of the vacuum suddenly produced when the pipe burst.

At the present time, the designer of dies for metal powder pressing is handicapped by relative ignorance of stress distribution and frictional effects at the interior surface of the die. Unckell was the first to develop a method for the study of wall friction. He used three Brinell balls on which the die rested during pressing. The total frictional wall force was determined by the size of impression these balls left on a soft metal plate. Since the method does not give radial pressures, or distribution of such pressures, coefficients of friction could not be determined. Although Unckel measured density distribution, he was not able to determine radial or shear stresses. Shaler2 has proposed theoretical expressions for the stress and density distribution within cylindrical compacts during pressing, in accordance with the experimental results of Kamm, Steinberg, and Wulff.3 By application of Siebel's method,4 Kamm et a13 plotted stress trajectories for two compacts. From the stress trajectories they calculated coefficients of friction from point to point along the die wall. As pointed out by Shaler in the discussion of Ref. 3, these values are based on progressive point-to-point calculations on finite size grid squares across the compact. In the region of the die wall such calculated values may therefore have considerable cumulative error. The purpose of the present paper is to develop an experimental method by which the nonhydrostatic pressures and shears acting on the interior wall of a cylindrical die can be measured. Such measurements can then he correlated with existing data to aid in the explanation of the pressing process. The method used is based on the elastic: properties of the thick-walled tube used as the die. The principle of super-position of force systems on an elastic body is assumed to hold. Electric strain gauges were mounted in adjacent positions on the exterior die wall in order to get an exact measurement of the variation of tangential strain over the length of the die during pressing. While in this paper, measurements in terms of only tangential strains are considered, it is well to note that similar calculations may be set up for axial strains. The latter are not preferred, since they tend to be smaller than the tangential strains and therefore permit less sensitive measurements. Discussion in this work is restricted to compacts pressed from both ends, since the elastic deformation of the die is then more amenable to analysis. Before choosing the electric strain gauge method, a more direct line of attack was considered and discarded. The discarded idea was the insertion of a pressure gauge through a hole in the die wall.* The gauge would have been in the form of a small piston. If pressure were exerted against such a gauge, it would move outward along a radius of the die. One disadvantage of the scheme is its inability to measure shears along the die wall. Another more serious disadvantage is the disturbance caused by the device itself. It would serve to change the forces it was designed to measure. No matter how small the movement of the gauge, when pressure is applied a discontinuity would exist in the wall surface at that point. Due to the stress concentration caused by the hole, abnormal deflections of the die wall would occur around the gauge. During pressing, powder would be forced into the resulting depression. The depression would then become larger with increasing compacting pressure. Powder, not being a fluid, is capable of supporting shear. The ease with which it would flow into the die wall depression to further move the piston is an indication, not of the radial pressure at that point, but of the state of shear retarding the movement. Thus the "pressure" gauge is really a criterion of flowability, and of the capability of the powder to support shear. For these reasons, it was decided that the electric strain method, herein employed, was more reliable, if more indirect. The gauges and lead wires, mounted on the external die wall do not in any way affect the behavior of the metal powder or the die during pressing. If over a small finite length L there is a normal pressure P, a tangential strain distribution at the outer wall results. This is shown schematically in Fig 1.
