Precision lattice-constant measurements have been widely used in the study of cubic solid solutions but as yet have been rarely applied to noncubic solid solutions. (See, however, references I and 2.) With the high precision at present attainable in the measurement of lattice constants, the X-ray method should be readily applicable to noncubic solid solutions. In the work reported here, hexagonal close-packed magnesium was used as the solvent and either lead, bismuth or gold as the solute. In the magnesium-lead and magnesium-bismuth systems the a and c lattice constants were determined as a function of composition, densities were calculated from these lattice-constant data, these theoretical densities were compared with those directly measured and the solid solubility limit was determined on quenched specimens over a considerable range of temperature. In the magnesium-gold system, the solid solubility is very small but we have obtained an indirect check on the solubility limit previously reported. Materials and Preparation oF the Alloys The magnesium used was obtained from the Aluminum Company of America and was 99.987 per cent pure. Impurities as reported On the label were: Fe, Al, 0'004 per cent; Si, 0.009 per cent; Zn, trace; Cu, Pb, nil. The bismuth was Merck's analytical grade, minimum purity 99.95 per cent. Maximum impurities as listed on the label were: Fe, 0.008 per cent; Pb, 0.010 per cent; Ag, 0.010 per cent; Cu, 0.005 per cent; Sn, 0.003 per cent; Sb, 0.00; As, 0.000; S, 0.01 per cent. The gold was purified by double precipitation with sulphur dioxide. The lattice constants of these three metals have been previously reported.3 The lead used was test lead, silver free and with a maximum of 0.10 per cent heavy metal impurities. The lattice constant 01 this lead has been measured and found to be 4.94057 ± 0.00016 at 25°C. The alloys were prepared by melting together weighed amounts of the constituent metals in magnesia-lined alundum crucibles under an atmosphere of hydrogen purified by passing over magnesium heated to 500°C. The magnesia lining prevented contamination 01 the alloys with aluminum. Vacuum melting could not be used because of the volatility of magnesium. A high-frequency induction furnace was used for the melting operation and the stirring action of the current resulted in thorough mixing of the constituents. The melts were allowed to freeze in the crucible, the ingots obtained weighed about 10 grams. An extremely thin white film formed on the surface of the melts, sometimes covering only a part of the exposed surface. VERMICULITE is a name used to describe micaceous material that exfoliates when heated. It is hydrated magnesium-aluminum-iron silicate. The chemical composition, color, physical appearance, and degree of exfoliation vary. COMPOSITION, PROPERTIES, AND ORIGIN Vermiculite has the characteristic micaceous structure of basal cleavage and readily splits into thin laminae, which are soft, pliable, and inelastic. The monoclinic crystal faces are often marked by triangular lines at 60° and 120°. Hardness is 1.5; specific gravity, 2.2-2.7; luster pearly to greasy; colors, amber, bronze, reddish brown, dark green, and black. Feel is soapy, particularly when wet. When heated it exfoliates by expanding at right angles to the cleavage into long wormlike pieces (the name vermiculite is from the Latin veamiculari, to breed worms). This important characteristic of expansion is believed to be a mechanical separation of the layers when the contained water is converted into steam. Warping of the unit layers may also contribute to the expansion. The increase in bulk volume of commercially prepared material is 8 to 12 times but individual flakes may increase in size more than this. Pure vermiculite is a distinct mineral and has the structural formula (OH), (Mg,Fe)3 (Si,Al,Fe)4 010.4H20. It rarely occurs in this pure form, but generally as a mixed mineral of varying structure. One explanation is that the mixed material is composed of unit layers of inter-stratified pure vermiculite and biotite. The essential difference between the two is that unit cell structure of vermiculite contains a layer of water molecules whereas the biotite cell contains potassium instead of the water. The water content of the mixed vermiculite is less than that of pure vermiculite but more than that of biotite. Pure biotite does not expand when heated. If the proportion of biotite layers in a vermiculite is too high it will adversely affect the degree of exfoliation. Within a given deposit, the great mass of material may approach a definite com-position with local areas of greater biotite content. THE principal costs of making a pound of aluminum are for 9 kw-hr of electricity and for 1.9 Ib of the oxide (A1203) called alumina. A pound of alumina is made by digesting 2 or 3 lb of bauxite in hot caustic solutions, settling and filtering out the oxides of silicon, iron, and titanium and precipitating and calcining the A1203 as a pure, white powder. The cost of foreign bauxite delivered at an alumina plant in the U.S. may equal or exceed the cost of its chemical treatment to make alumina. Some of the principal factors affecting costs in the utilization of foreign bauxites are: transportation from mine to market, mineralogical and physical composition of the bauxite, thickness of the bauxite beds and their clay and forest overburden, amen- ability of the bauxite to beneficiation and to caustic extraction of the alumina, and lastly size of bauxite deposits and rate of mining employed.

This laboratory flow study covers propping agent transporl in horizontal fractures as influenced by the characteristics of the propping particles, fluid and fracture. Correlations are presented for the transport of particles, deposition and fingering through dunes. For particles moving individually, the article velocity in some cases may be low compared to the hulk average fluid velocity; in other cases, the particle velocity may exceed the bulk average fluid velocity. At high propping agent concentration or low fluid velocity, the likelihood of particle deposition and dune formation increases. Fingering and channeling accompany dune formation. Dune formation can be limited to the outer region of tile fracture by adjustment of pump rate, fluid viscosity and particle concentration. A method is presented by which pump rate and fluid vircosity may he selected to control dune formation for given propping agent concentrations. INTRODUCTION The area and flow capacity of a fracture predominantly control the stimulation derived from hydraulic fracturing. Generation of fracture area exposes the rock matrix to a flow channel; the flow capacity of the fracture controls the flow through the channel to the wellbore under a given pressure gradient. This paper pertains to an important factor that affects the flow capacity of a fracture: the transport of the propping particles in the fracturing during the hydraulic fracturing treatment. With a better understanding of particle transport, fracturing treatments may be designed to obtain more effective distribution of the propping agent. RELATED STUDIES In recent years, the approach to obtaining high fracture flow capacity has been partial monolayer propping. Three papers1-3 have dealt with various facets of this concept. However, in some papers dealing specifically with particle transport, the results generally indicate that packing the propping particles within a fracture is inevitable. In early work&apos; with a sand slurry flowing in a pie-shaped flow cell, qualitative results showed that particle deposition in a fracture during transport should be expected. In other studies"" correlations based on slurry flow in vertical linear flow cells showed particle deposition was primarily a function of fluid velocity. In a recent paper the rate of sand advance (movement of dunes) in a horizontal linear flow cell was discussed. Subsequently, a method was given for designing fracturing treatments, based on the extent of sand advance during a treatment. In this work, particles whose diameter was small relative to the fracture width (i.e., dl W< 0.2) were primarily considered. The particle transport approaches that of sand transport in a stream bed. The industry trend, however, has been to use larger size propping agents. That is, particles with diameters approaching fracture widths predicted by Perkins and Kern.&apos;&apos; This trend has led to generally better fracturing treatments with particle relative sizes in the range 0.2 <d/W < 1.0. In all of the particle transport studies previously cited, the fluid characteristics were discussed. However, little or no attention was given to the parzicle characteristics. In this study the particles. as well as the fluid and fracture, are considered. VARIABLES AFFECTING PARTICLE TRANSPORT In the exploratory work to set LIP a program for this study, it was noted that particles within a batch moved at different velocities in a horizontal linear flow cell. In some cases the particles moved independently. In others there was particle interference. Also, particle deposition and fluid fingering occurred in some cases (Fig. 1). As a result of observing the easily distinguishab&apos;le types of particle movement, the particle variables as well as the fluid variables were included. In addition, the fracture width was included because the fluid velocity profile surely must affect the movement of the larger particles differently than that of smaller particles. Particle variables were density, diameter (based on a sphere of equal volumetric displacement), long and short dimensions, drag coefficient and velocity. Fluid variables were density, viscosity, yield shear strength and velocity. Fracture variables were the width and the angle between the plane of flow and a horizontal plane. Two factors which may prove to be important were omitted because of the complexity resulting from the parameters cited above. These are the fracture-surface roughness and gross irregularities that cause changes in the direction of flow. EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE A linear parallel-plate flow cell (Fig. 2) was used in the study. Lucite plates 1 in. thick formed the test section and permitted a viewing section 11 ft long and 10 in. wide. Spacing between the plates was adjusted with shims to give fracture widths 1/36 to 1/2 in. The model could be tilted to an angle of 45" with the horizonltal plane. Production of both metallurgical and thermal coal represents a significant sector of the mining economy of British Columbia. The coal measures are located in the Rocky Mountains, and the majority of the coal is produced by open pit mining. The coal seams occur interbedded with siltstones, sandstones, mudstones, and shales. Consequently, large volumes of waste rock are generated in the course of open pit mining. The waste rock is consigned to waste rock piles that of necessity must be developed on moderate to steeply sloping terrain. Some of the waste dumps currently under development will ultimately contain in excess of 500 million cubic meters of material, and some of the proposed waste piles will attain heights in excess of 300 m. These waste piles must be developed in a manner that will assure their stability through all stages of development, as well as over the long term after mining operations have been completed. This paper describes methods of waste dump development, factors affecting stability, modes of potential failure, and a simple method for monitoring movements to provide a warning of pending unstable conditions.

A new theory for three dimensional collapse of conical liners shows why the two dimensional theory may offer a good approximation. Shaped charge design parameters and rock target properties were investigated to determine their effects on penetration and breakage. Penetration in dolomite is somewhat similar to that in steel, but copper does not have markedly better penetration capabilities than brass. Several metals, liner thicknesses, cone angles and standoff ranges for each were investigated. Effective standoff is greater for aluminum than more dense metals. Optimum geometry appears to approximate that for metal targets. Resistance to penetrations was greatest for a red granite and dense siliceous rocks, and least for dolomite and porous sandstone. Hardness and compressive strength appear to be two important conventional proper- ties. The first order law does not apply to the rocks tested. Dolomite may be drilled with shaped charges, the holes sprung and round blasted successfully.

A group of 13 cities situated in Los Angeles and Orange counties in Southern California is engaged in constructing an aqueduct to carry water from the Colorado River at a point near Parker, Arizona, to a distribution point near Riverside, California. The aqueduct will have a total length of approximately 241 miles, and is designed to deliver 1605 cu. ft. of water per second, or a little more than one billion gallons per day. The aqueduct crosses a barren, desert waste and the project includes approximately 91 miles of 16-ft. tunnel. The large amount of tunnel driving that has been done in this country in the past few years has resulted in some remarkable developments in equipment and methods. The building of the Colorado River Aqueduct,, with its 91 miles of tunnels, has called on the best engineering knowledge in the country. New and better equipment has been designed for all phases of the work, and this equipment has been coordinated and adapted to the various conditions with a high degree of efficiency. The result has been that records for tunnel driving have been set under adverse natural conditions that exceed the estimates for progress under good conditions. All of the tunnels in the main aqueduct, except the Valverde and Bernasconi at the western end, have a finished diameter, inside the concrete lining, of 16 ft. Fig. 4 shows a section of the tunnel with the concrete lining in place. Fig. 5 illustrates the finished tunnel in three typical sections. The standard tunnel grade is 3.432 ft. per mile in the 16-ft. tunnels, but the Valverde and Bernasconi tunnels have a steeper grade and a finished diameter of 15 ft. 3 in. The rough bore of the large main aqueduct tunnels averages 12.95 solid cubic yards of material per foot of advance in timbered sections and 10.76 solid cubic yards per foot in unsupported sections. A serious disagreement as to the effect of titanium on the hardenability of steel exists in published references to this subject. Kramer, Hafner and Toleman reported&apos; that acid-soluble titanium decreased creased the hardenability, with multiplying factors less than unity according to [ ] Grossmann&apos;s system for calculating hardenability from the composition. Crafts and Lamont, on the other hand, showed2 how titanium increased the hardenability, with multiplying factors up to nearly 1.7 for about o.&apos; per cent titanium, though reducing the hardenability with higher titanium. Their data, however, were obtained almost exclusively from steels containing more than 2.4 per cent manganese, and thus should be considered as applying mainly to manganese steels. Likewise, the results of Kramer, Hafner and, Toleman regarding titanium are subject to the limitation that although they eliminated the effect of the insoluble titanium compounds from their calculations, they did not make a similar correction for the carbon that was combined with titanium and therefore occurred in a similarly ineffective form. It is suggested by the literature referred to that titanium may have different effects on hardenability, depending on the mode of its occurrence in the steel. The different effects on strength, ductility, etc., have already been discussed by the author.3 In the present discussion some comparisons, on the basis of hardenability as revealed by the Jominy end-quench test, are given between three titanium and two non titanium steels heat-treated in the same ways, and between other titanium steels heat-treated in several different ways. COMPARISON OF PLAIN-CARBON, VANADIUM AND TITANIUM STEELS The five steels used for these experiments were commercially melted and rolled products received in the form of 1.5-in. rounds from three different mills. Their analyses are given in Table I. Steels 2, 3, and 4 are from the same basic electric heat, containing 0.009 per cent of phosphorus and the same amount of sulphur. They were made by, adding aluminum and low-carbon ferrotitanium to different ingots. No. I is a plain-carbon coarse-grained S.A.E. 1040 steel made by the basic open-hearth -process. No. 5

THOUGH the Geophysics Commit- tee limited itself to two sessions this year, both of them marked by a high percentage of absentee authors, even this situation failed to dampen the and or of the ebullient geophysicists, who bandied no small amount of good- humoredlv barbed discussion. Hans Lundherg offered some constructive criticism of last year&apos;s report by the Geophysics Education Commit- tee, making a plea for more training in field techniques and less insistence on rigorous theoretical training. Carl Heiland pointed out the necessity of making geophysics and geology courses more attractive in order to draw more students into these fields. Exception was taken to this line of reasoning by Father Macelwane and Sherwin F. Kelly who emphasized the necessity for sound basic training if competent geophysicists were to be turned out. This discussion developed apropos of the report of the Geophysics Education Committee, which had been postponed from the Education Division meetings, but was not read as it was available in mimeographed form. AT Butte, successive zones of sericitized and argillized quartz monzonite occur around every ore-bearing fracture regardless of its size, attitude, or relative age. The two types of alteration always occupy the same relative positions; sericite adjacent to the ore-bearing vein, clay minerals always between the scricitized rock and fresh quartz monzonite, except where overlap of alteration effects between adjacent fissures has eliminated the lower grade mineralogical products, as is the case in much of Butte&apos;s Central zone of pervasive sericitization. As long as active circulation continued in the channel, each zone migrated away from the fissure, that is, it grew at its outer edge and simultaneously receded at its veinward edge because of encroachment by the next innermost zone. The different mineralogical and chemical responses within the wall rocks to the attack by the ore fluid are dependent not on a drastic about-face change of composition of the fluid in the channel relative to its ability to alter the quartz monzonite but on continuously varying conditions of physico-chemical environment within the wall rock outwardly from the vein.&apos; Introduction From the economic viewpoint it is highly desirable that much effort be expended for the purpose of increasing our knowledge of ores and their origin. It has been the observation of the senior writer, many times expressed, that the mining companies have spent too little money in research on the geology of nature&apos;s deposits of copper, lead, and zinc, which we know to be of limited extent and which, when exhausted, must be replaced by new discoveries. Experience at Butte and elsewhere has forced the conclusion that observation and mapping in the field must be supplemented by laboratory work if we are to arrive at a reasonably correct understanding of the geology of ore bodies and their environments. It is only through the medium of such correct understanding of geology that we shall be able to accomplish the maximum toward aiding mine operations and at the same time provide a proper background for field examination work whether it be geological or geophysical. The Anaconda Copper Mining Company&apos;s answer to the need above expressed has been to equip a geological laboratory at Butte. The reason why Butte was selected is obvious, for situated there is one of the world&apos;s largest and geologically most interesting concentrations of copper and zinc. Furthermore, because of the great extent of underground workings both laterally and vertically, the opportunities for observation and study of ore occurrences probably are unequaled anywhere. The laboratory was established with five principal objectives in view. These were: 1. As an aid to Anaconda Company mine operations at Butte and elsewhere, this work to supplement that of the mine geologists. 2. To aid in acquiring as complete an understanding as possible of the behavior of Butte veins and ore bodies laterally and in depth.

InteRmetallic compounds are formed in many binary metal systems. Some compounds are stable to their melting points, and others decompose at lower transition temperatures. Even those of the first class are dissociated in the liquid state, as indicated by the continuous form of their solubility curves at their melting points1. While the lattice structures of some of these compounds have been determined, their thermodynamic properties have not been investigated. In this paper is described the determination of the free energy and heat of formation of the compound CdSb, which is of the first class mentioned above, melting congruently at 455&apos; C. This compound shows a rhombic structure, and the lengths of the edges of the elementary cell containing four molecules are: a = 6.52, b = 8.60, c = 4.16 A.&apos; There are three possible methods of determining the free energy of formation of a compound of this type. The first method, applying the third law of thermodynamics, requires the measurement of its heat capacity preferably to liquid hydrogen temperatures, and a calorimetric determination of its heat of formation. The second method involves the study of the equilibrium of the compound in some gas reaction, such as: CdSb + CO² = CdO + CO + Sb From the known free energies of formation of CdO, CO² and CO the free energy of formation of CdSb could be calculated. The third method measures the electromotive force of a galvanic cell in which the cell reaction is the reversible formation of the compound from the elements. The first method is generally applicable, but requires elaborate experimental equipment. The second method can not be used for compounds melting at low temperatures, owing to the difficulty in establishing equilibrium. The electromotive force method, therefore, seemed to offer

The second method involves the study of the equilibrium of the compound in some gas reaction, such as: CdSb + CO² = CdO + CO + Sb From the known free energies of formation of CdO, CO² and CO the free energy of formation of CdSb could be calculated. The third method measures the electromotive force of a galvanic cell in which the cell reaction is the reversible formation of the compound from the elements. The first method is generally applicable, but requires elaborate experimental equipment. The flow stress in some latent slip systems of aluminum and silver crystals after various deformations in single slip was investigated by transverse compression and supplemented by experiments on overshoot of the compression axis and the stability of corner orientations. Work hardening was found to be remarkably isotropic, the ratio of the flow stress in the latent system to that in the primary system being between 1.0 and 1.3. The strain-rate dependence was not significantly larger in the latent system. This low anisotropy suggests that specific dislocation interactions are not the direct cause of work hardening. Either the obstacles are essentially impenetrable so that only their distance enters, or a fairly random distribution of dislocations of all systems is. in fact. formed during single slip. The latter seems to he excluded by the observations on the strain-mte dependence and on the amount of secondary strain. The amount of seconzdary strains occurring in single slip was determined by shape-change mensurements and by a new method connected with the latent-hardening experiments. It is definitely less than 1/300 times the strain in the primary svstem. WORK hardening is due to dislocation interactions; this is a hypothesis, and possibly the only one, on which all present work-harden ing theories agree. About a dozen specific interactions have been considered, and it is unlikely that any essential one has been missed. Different work-hardening theories differ to a large extent in the specific interactions which are deemed most important. The presence or absence of any particular interaction, and its degree, depend on the geometrical relationships between the two dislocations interacting. Let us enumerate some examples. Two dislocations may react, with a varying reaction energy, to form a third dislocation, and this reaction product may be sessile or glissile. Two dislocations may intersect and a jog may be formed on both, on one of them, or on neither; this jog may be sessile17Z or glissile and it may, if moved nonconservatively, lead to the production of vacancies or interstitials. Finally, a dislocation may bypass another one and thus interact only with its stress field. All these interactions depend on the specific relation between the Burgers vectors and line directions of the two dislocations. Any dislocation generated during plastic deformation of fcc crystals belongs to one of twelve slip systems. Taking any one dislocation, its relationship to each of the other eleven can fall, by symmetry, into one of only five classes. These relationships are enumerated in Fig. 1 and Table I. Each slip system is represented in the stereo-graphic projection by two triangles, namely those in one of which the specimen axis would have to lie if the specimen were to deform in single slip on this slip system in a given sense, in a tension test. Let us represent the primary slip system by the shaded triangles. The other slip systems are classified only with respect to their relationship to this primary system. The code letters (initials of established names* in German) are explained in Table I. Three specific interactions are also listed in cases where they may be strong: the product of a reaction, the formation of jogs in either system, and the elastic bypass stress. The last column relates to the types of experiments reported in this paper and summarizes their results. To decide experimentally between the relative importance of the various interactions one would like to produce a group of dislocations in one slip system and then measure the stress necessary to force another group of dislocations of a specific second system through them. Hopefully, one can produce the first set of dislocations by plastically deforming the specimen in single slip. Then one can try to achieve single slip in a specific, previously latent system and measure its flow stress. If it is different from the virgin flow stress, there has been "latent hardening". Some types of latent-hardening experiments will be discussed in the next section. The strain-rate and temperature dependence of the flow stress is an indication of the importance of dislocation intersections. The prices of crude petroleum and its derivatives have shown an upward trend from 1915 to 1920, and a downward trend from 19&apos;20 to 1923, see Table 1. Over the former period, oil prices were dominated by the rapidly increasing demands and inflation incident to the war and its aftermath, while over the latter period oil prices were influenced at the outset by deflation and then by the conditions of overproduction that have characterized the past three years. he purpose of this paper is to analyze the broader features of the more recent price movements in the petroleum industry and to relate these features to basic economic conditions in the industry. Index Numbers of Oil Prices The analysis and comparison of price movements may be facilitated by converting actual prices into relative prices, or index numbers, with 1913 taken as a base of 100. In this way, the various price groups are expressed as percentages of the 1913 prices and may thus be readily compared with one another or with the average prices of other commodities similarly expressed. Table 1 gives the index numbers representing the average prices of crude petroleum, gasoline, kerosene, fuel oil, lubricating oils, and all commodities. The last named is the index of all commodities as published by the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and is widely accepted as the official measure of the general price level. The index numbers of oil prices were calculated by the writer from weekly quotations published in trade journals. Fig. 1 shows in graphic form the trend of oil prices by months over the period 1920-23. Business appraisals require, as additional information, the expected profit or loss implied by the physical summary. The early incorporation of knowledge gained through financial analysis computations can provide a means for economically resolving many common exploration and development problems. Examples of such applications from the activities of exploration planning, reconnaissance, land acquisition, and development planning are presented in this paper.

Dr. Gardener, in Chapter 2, has presented a comprehensive state-of-the- art review of site investigations For tunneling. Nearly all of the techniques he discussed will also be required for future site investigations. Therefore, this chapter will be devoted to a few rather new exploration techniques plus ideas for improving some of the present-day methods. In March 1962, the first symposium on "Remote Sensing of Environment" was held at the University of Michigan.l Since that time, four additional symposiums have been held at the same University. Also, the technical Literature has recently included a number of articles on remote sensing techniques. A recent one appeared in the February 1968 issue of Materials Research and Standards.Vt was entitled "Developments in Remote Sensing Applicable to Airborne Engineering Surveys of Soils and Rocks," and was written by Dana C. Parker. Mr. Parker predicts that aerial reconnaissance will someday supplant soil augers, rock drills, surface reconnaissance, and geophysical surveys as the engineer&apos;s primary means of obtaining information about soils and rocks. He states, "The engineer wishing to survey a route or a site or to locate rock and soils suitable for construction projects will be able to push some buttons in an airplane and record all the data required for determining the relevant conditions. In a short time after he returns to earth with his rolls of film and charts, he will be able to reduce and analyze the data by partially computerized techniques and to compile a concise and comprehensive engineering report that gives all the relevant information about rocks, soil, water, and vegetation in the area he surveyed. Most important he will feel as confident with his recommendations, derived primarily from image characteristics and spectral power distributions, as his predecessors did with recommendations based on more tangible evidence obtained from drill cores and surface reconnaissance." IT. is, of course, expected that manufacture of the various metal powders should involve numerous methods adapted to the specific characteristics of the metals themselves. Several methods for powdering a particular metal may be available, but the physical characteristics of the powder as produced by the several methods may be quite different. In the final analysis, the application of the metal powder dictates the physical properties that the metal powder must possess, and this, to a very large extent, will determine which of several possible methods of. manufacture is adopted. Sometimes powder of the same metal is produced by more than one method, each powder having specific characteristics .that make it particularly suitable for its application. For purposes of classification, the various methods of powdering metals can be grouped as follows: 1. Machining. 2. Milling (by ball mills, stamps, attrition mills, etc.). 3. Shotting (pouring molten metal into water, air, etc.). 4. Granulation (by stirring molten metal while solidifying). 5. Atomizing (disintegrating by steam, compressed air, etc.). 6. Condensation of metal vapor. 7. Reduction of oxide powders. 8. Chemical precipitation. 9. Electrolytic deposition. 10. Sintering (for producing alloy powders). 11. Formation of an alloy followed by dissolving or otherwise removing one of the alloying constituents. MACHINING Turnings, cuttings, filings, etc., are, of course, produced as by-products in machine work of various kinds, and find certain applications as metal powders. For example, iron powder so produced is used extensively as a reducing or precipitating agent and as a constituent in certain hard-finish cements.
