SEVERAL years ago my firm was representing the Mt. Lyell Co. of Australia, which was shipping its blister copper to a refining works in the United States. After the contract had been running for many months, the superintendent of these works discovered that if water was poured upon the surface of the bars much of it would disappear into the interior through blow holes. -Some experiments made by him showed that this could be a considerable amount, so that copper which had been rained on before it was weighed, although the surface appeared dry, nevertheless would contain water. It had frequently occurred in our experience-as samp-lers that the drillings from a lot taken by boring would come out quite wet, and in some cases, indeed, water would drip into the sample pan placed below the bars, due to the fact that the drill had penetrated a cavity or cavities containing water, which presumably got into the cavities at the time the copper was water-cooled after casting, there being, perhaps, no outlet to the surface. So far as I know, until this discovery at the refining works, no. one had thought that rain could penetrate into the interior of blister copper; at least in any quantity sufficient to be considered.

During many years of service in the iron and steel industry I have frequently found, as have also many other engineers, that the common devices used for feeding coal into gas-producers are not what they ought to be in order to secure the best economy. The hopper-and-cone so generally used is familiar to all, and a brief study of its action will surely satisfy everybody that this device has several serious faults. In the first place, the charging is intermittent, and depends entirely upon an attendant. When the hopper is frequently emptied, it may work fairly well, but even then it suddeinly discharges into the hot producers a large body of coal, which is often violently converted into gas that rushes into the furnace, and, as the damper for the combustion-air cannot be regulated every time the producer is charged, there will be an excess of gas, which goes up the chimney unburned. Between the chargings the quantity of gas generated decreases, and there will often be an excess of air in the furnace,

Experimental results are given for the rate of oxidation of ferrous iron to ferric iron in pure molten iron oxide by carbon dioxide + carbon moloxide mixtures at 1550°C. It is shown that the rate-controlling process is the interdiffusion of iron and oxygen atoms within the melt. The inter-diffusivity of iron and oxygen in the melt is obtained from the results and the value of (5.0 * 1.0) x 10-5sq cm per sec is recommended for the temperature of 1550°C. Similarly, it is also found that the rate of reduction of molten iron oxide is con -trolled by diffusion in the melt; however, apparent interdiffusivity values from these experiments are 10 to 20 pct higher than those obtained in the oxidation experiments, by virtue of convection arising from density difference. The results of the oxidation experintents are used to calculate an estimated self-diffusivity of iron in molten iron oxide of (1.5 * 0.5) x sq cm per sec. BECAUSE of the industrial importance of iron oxides, the study of the kinetics of both the reduction and oxidation of the solid oxides has received a great deal of attention. However, knowledge of the kinetics of similar reactions in the liquid state is very meager. Dancy 1 studied the kinetics of reduction of molten iron oxide by carbon in pig iron and found that the reaction is very fast. It was concluded from the results that the reduction of molten ferrous oxide is a first-order reaction up to 80 pct reduction, while

Rates of oxidation were studied for levitation-melted samples of Fe-C, Fe-Si, Fe-C-Si, Fe-C-P, Fe-C-Mn, and Fe-C-S alloys oxidized by mixtures of either 5 or 10 pct O2, in helium at several temperatures in the range 1850o to 2050°C. The concentrations of the oxidized elements decreased linearly with time. Mass transport in the gas phase was found to be the rate-controlling step. Ilowever, a mulliple -film model was necessary to account for the flux of iron and manganese vapor counter to the oxygen flow. THE advent of the basic oxygen and spray-refining processes of steelmaking has generated considerable interest in the kinetics of reactions between oxygen-bearing gases and liquid iron alloys. The object of this research was the determination of the role of mass transport in the gas and metal phases and of surface chemical reactions in the overall oxidation process. Of the reactions for elimination of elements dissolved in liquid iron, the oxidation of carbon has been investigated most extensively. Studies by Fuji and Ura,1 Fuji,' and Gunji et a1.,3 done with pilot-scale basic oxygen furnaces, indicated that mass transport of gaseous oxygen was rate controlling when the metal carbon content was greater than 0.15 to 0.30 pct. When the carbon content was less than this critical amount, diffusion of carbon dissolved in the iron was thought to be rate limiting. L. A. Baker et a1.4,5 levitated samples of iron-carbon alloys and oxidized them in CO-CO2, CO-C02-He, and O2-He atmospheres at 1660°C. These investigators found that the metal carbon concentration decreased linearly with time and their samples exploded when the carbon content fell below about 0.8 pct. They concluded that the rate-limiting step was the transfer of oxidant to the gas-metal interface. A model based on this rate-limiting step predicted decarburization rates within a factor of two of those experimentally observed. The explosion of the samples was attributed to a shift in rate-controlling step from gas-phase mass transport to transport of carbon dissolved in the metal. L. A. Baker and R. G. ward6 and R. Baker7 used freely falling droplets to investigate oxidation kinetics. In both papers, the authors speculated that flame fronts may have been partially responsible for the lack of better agreement between experiment and theory. Swisher and Turkdogan8 oxidized liquid iron having an initial carbon content of 0.97 pct with CO-CO2 and CO-C02-Ar mixtures at 1580°C. They concluded that a surface reaction was the rate controlling step. Iron-silicon alloys have been oxidized by R. Baker7 and Filipov and Martynov.9 R. Baker 7 also studied iron-carbon-silicon alloys falling as liquid droplets through oxygen. He found that the rate of both carbon and silicon oxidation varied inversely with the drop radius. When the initial silicon concentration was greater than 6 pct, the samples cooled during their fall. Manganese oxidation has been studied by R. Baker,7 and by Filipov and Martynov.9 ward10 investigated the loss of manganese from liquid iron under vacuum. He found that mass transport of manganese vapor was rate limiting in argon atmospheres of 0.02 torr to 700 torr pressure. Iron-sulfur alloys were desulfurized with H2-He and H2-Ar mixtures by Peters et al.11 A model based on the transport of H2S from the gas-metal interface into the bulk gas gave fair agreement between the predictions of the model and the experimental results. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Essentially, the technique consisted of using helium-oxygen gas mixtures to oxidize levitated samples of liquid binary and ternary iron-base alloys. The fused silica reaction tube is shown in Fig. 1. The coil design is similar to that of L. A. Baker et al.4'5 A Tef-lon-sheathed, ferritic stainless steel lifter (B) and an alumina pedestal (C) were used to support the sample in the coil prior to levitation and for the recovery of the sample. For this purpose Table I. was constructed by grouping all determinations made by the same method, and the probable errors were calculated. Mr. Cottrell : I omitted to speak of the cost of installation. The precipitation-plant at the Balaklala smelter, up to the time of initial operation, including the construction of flues, installation of the apparatus, etc., cost $107,000, and subsequent modifications probably represented at least $15,000 more. Upon the information gained in this plant, the installation at the cement-mill, handling nearly twice as much gas, has been reduced in cost in a number of ways, but the overhead construction, carrying the precipitator at the top of the stacks, is naturally expensive, yet, even so, the total cost of construction will probably not greatly exceed $150,000. The mechanical details of the tubular form last shown have been worked out more recently than those of the plate form, and the tubular form promises to be still less expensive in construction, as you would naturally expect. The cost of operat-ing the plant varies somewhat with the character of the gases used. The amount of power consumed is not determined by the tonnage of the material collected, but by the volume of gas to be handled. It takes as much power to precipitate a thin cloud as a dense one. In the cement-plant they are getting a higher efficiency; i. e., a greater number of cubic feet treated per kilowatt than in the earlier plants. This is perhaps partly due to higher temperature of the gases, which here average about 450° C. The best figures on the cement-plant are between 3 kw. and 4 kw. Of

For the past year we have had in use at the Durham furnace a set of hollow pig-patterns made of iron, which have given such satis factory results that I think a description of them would be of interest to the members of the Institute. Before the introduction of these iron patterns, we used the ordi nary wooden patterns, made in the usual way with straps of iron along the sides to protect the corners from wearing off. The size and shape of these wooden patterns are shown in Fig. 1. When the patterns were new, the pigs weighed about 130 pounds each, and were uniform in size, and the moulding was clean. But constant use soon wore the patterns away; and at the end of a few months, the pigs had become, in consequence, so much lighter that the moulding, daily, of several additional beds was necessary to accommodate the same quantity of iron. As the patterns wear away, the moulding becomes ragged and the pigs rough. Moreover, wooden patterns are often destroyed by fire. I have known an entire set to be destroyed by a break-out of iron. The iron pattern which I have designed is free from all the objections to the wooden pattern, being not only more durable, but, in the long run, far cheaper. The iron pattern having the same shape and size as the wooden one, is made of the best flange-iron, of No. 13 gauge. After the sheets have been cut to the proper size, three heats are required for the flanging. At the first heat, each piece is stamped in a cast-iron form, which gives the proper shape to the bottom part of the pat-

THE present program of increased production of armament and lend-lease material for mechanized war has created a problem for the shops that must do the machining. They have naturally turned to the steel producers to provide them with a steel that can be accurately machined with the greatest possible speed. The adding of sulphur to steel as an aid to machinability has long been practiced; however, it may cause red shortness in rolling and may result in billets with seams and cracks, which must be removed before rolling can be continued. This conditioning of billets slows down production and adds to the cost of making steel. Experience with various grades of sulphur steel made to different specifications has shown that Bessemer sulphur steels roll better than similar grades made in the open hearth, and also that low-carbon steels that are open or semi-killed as tapped roll better than completely deoxidized or killed steels. This has led to the belief that oxygen plays an important part in the rolling qualities of sulphur-bearing steels. It is generally held that the red shortness of sulphur steels is due to the low melting point of the sulphide compounds that separate out at the grain boundaries when the steel solidifies. At the rolling temperature of steel these sulphide compounds melt and cause cracking. ADDING SULPHUR AS A SULPHITE These difficulties can be avoided if sulphur is introduced into the steel by means of an anhydrous sulphite, such as sodium sulphite or sodium bisulphite, which-upon decomposition-forms sulphur dioxide. It is assumed that, in this case, the oxygen of the sulphur dioxide forms part of the sulphide inclusions in the steel, and raises their solidification temperature enough so that the formation in the steel of a low-melting eutectic is prevented. The result is the prevention of hot shortness and a more uniform distribution of inclusions. Fig, I shows photomicrographs of steels made with sulphur, while Fig, 2 illustrates the structure of steels made with sodium bisulphite. These samples were cut from the steels as cast-that is, before rolling and were polished and lightly etched to bring out the grain boundaries. Fig. I shows that sulphide inclusions segregate more or less at the grain boundaries, and it can be seen how the continuity of these low-melting inclusions would cause red shortness. Fig. 2 shows that the sulphide inclusions are more or less uniformly distributed throughout the matrix. This arrangement of inclusions has no apparent effect on the rolling qualities of a steel. This statement has been substantiated by the observation of the rolling of over 6000 tons of steel made with a sulphite addition. At a time when Congressional stiffening of health and safety regulations in the nation's coal mines seems all but an afterthought, when the problems confronting both mine operator and worker are being tossed about like a pigskin in an Australian- rules football match, what could be more appropriate to the times than to incorporate a discussion on these matters into the proceedings of an annual coal meeting. Integration of both technical and topical discussion provided the strength for this 28th Annual Meeting of the Central Appalachian Section of the AIME, convened at the The Greenbrier, White. Sulphur Springs. W. Va., Oct. 31-Nov. 1. Three technical sessions prepared for the occasion were served to those in attendance. First of these was held on Friday morning. Rendered excellent coverage, topics included Roof Structure Analysis at Blacksville No. I, presented by David Eyer, Christopher Coal Co.; Methane Monitors (evolution and evaluation of present day detection equipment); and Instantaneous Control Reaction to Mine Fires and Explosions, in which Elmer A. Fike illustrated the point quite vividly by showing a film on the potential of such control equipment. Indeed, the ability to snuff out a mine fire before it is allowed to spread even beyond its own igniting sparks speaks very well for itself. However, Fike hastened to point out that certain difficulties had to be overcome before these "fire watchers" could be implemented successfully in mines. These "bugs," inherent in virtually all coal mining environments, include ignition of sulfur pockets on mine facings and delivery of sparks on trolley rails, both of which may impede the accuracy of such control monitors.

A method of predicting waterflood performance has been developed that combines certain facets of several previously published prediction techniques. The manner of combination has required the development and use of some new and some little-known relationships and has eliminated several of the weaker assumptions inherent in the original individual prediction methods. This approach, which was designed for computer solution, has removed the necessity of referring to plotted curves and permits the analytical prediction of water flood performance for a five-spot well pattern in either homogeneous or stratified reservoirs. The Predicted values are expressed in common oilfield units rather than in abstract or dimensionless terms. The calculation procedure has been programmed in FORTRAN IV and the entire program listing is available to potential users.* Introduction Prior to initiation of secondary recovery of oil by waterflooding, the possibilities of economic success or failure must be evaluated with the greatest practical accuracy. Although many prediction techniques are available, most, if not all, have serious limitations. In recent years, the Bureau of Mines has attempted to stimulate interest in the secondary recovery of oil from Appalachian pressure-depleted reservoirs. Waterflooding, because of its widespread acceptance and success, is the principal secondary-recovery method considered. During the life of the project, several performance prediction methods have been studied and applied. Because these methods, individually, have inherent assumptions and limi-tations, portions of some of them have been selected and combined in an effort to eliminate such shortcomings wherever possible. We believe that the resulting technique is as accurate as the necessary available data will permit and that it has several distinct advantages over previously published methods. Development of the Method The fractional flow equation developed by Buckley and Leverett' from Darcy's law is the fundamental mathematical statement describing immiscible fluid-fluid displacement in porous media. A generalized form of this relationship, whose derivation is readily available in the literature, is The formation dip, a, is usually very small in those petroleum reservoirs being considered for pattern waterflooding in the Appalachian area. Therefore. in many cases. a has an almist negligible value. In addition, Ap, the difference between the density of water and the density of oil, is relatively small. For these reasons the gravitational term may often be neglected. Capillary pressure is a function of saturation, which is in turn a function of distance from the upstream boundary of the system or the injection well. In this study it is assumed that the frontal zone of the waterflooding (or zone of capillarity) has negligible length and that only those saturations in the water-swept zone at breakthrough and later are of interest. As the distance in a waterflood pattern is comparatively large and the change in water saturation with distance is usually small, the change in capillary pressure with distance is negligible. The simplified form of the fractional flow equation is appropriate, therefore, in this application. Three variables must be considered in determining that fraction of the total fluid flow that consists of water: the viscosity ratio, saturation, and relative permeability ratio.

The approximate methods which are now in use for calculating oil displacement from reservoirs by gas-cycling or gravity-drainage at constant gas pressure, or by water flooding, make use of fundamental relationships derived by Leverett' and Buckley and Leverett.2 The mathematical equations needed are derived by applying Darcy's law to the flowing phases, and by material balance considerations. ln general, any treatment of this type gives. for any particular exploitation time considered, a plot of oil saturation against distance in the reser-voir. The oil recovery must then be obtained by integrating in some manner the area under the plot. A useful analytical method has been derived for computing the average saturation, and hence the oil recovery. Use of this method simplifies the calculations because it makes unnecessary any numerical integrations. and even the saturation distribution plots are not needed. A further advantage of the method is that knowledge of the relative permeabilities is required only for a limited and intermediate saturation range. In both the Buckley and Leverett method and the method discussed here, a linear sand section is assumed, and in the case of gas drive the gas pressure is assumed sufficiently constant both with respect to reservoir position and time so that changes in gas density. solubility, or reservoir volume factor are negligiklle. Thus, the exploitation contemplates oil displacement as by an immiscible phase. Examples are given to illustrate how the new method can be used. INTRODUCTION AND THEORETICAL BACKGROUND This paper treats a simplified method for computing oil recovery when the oil is displaced, from the reservoir sand by a fluid which, within the limits of accuracy desired, can be assumed to be incompressible and immiscible with the oil. The method makes use of two basic relations originally developed for the case of water displacing oil. However, the case of gas displacing oil saturated with gas at a constant (or nearly constant) pressure may also be considered a displacement by an immiscible fluid. This is possible for the reason that the concentration of the gas in the oil never changes if tile pressure is fixed. consequently, any additional free gas must remain undissolved in the oil, and so must act essentially as an immiscible phase. For convenience, the cape of gas drive will be considered first. Both of the two basic relations needed refer to a linear reservoir, or one which may be somewhat idealized so that a constant cross-section is exposed to fluid flow. Further, the displacing phase is injected at one end, or face; of the reservoir, while the produced fluids are understood to emerge at one point only. which is the opposite face of the reservoir. As indicated in Fig. 1, the reservoir may he inclined by some angle 8. The first of the required equations may be derived by applying Darcy's law to both displacing and displaced phases, and subtracting the two equations. Ordered and disordered specimens of the alloy CusAu were cold worked and then annealed at 2880, 310°, and 340°C, together with disordered unworked specimens. me resistivity decreased during annealing mainly as a result of ordering; the resistivity measurements suggest that in cold-worked specimens the growth of antiphase domains is impeded. The strength properties increased during annealing at 288 "C; in cold-worked specimens this increase was lo a level above that for cold-worked specimens which had not been annealed. X-ray diffraction showed that after annealing for a few hours at 288ºC, the long-range order increased to a constant value; additional annealing at 288ºC resulted in the growth of antiphase domains in which the degree of order was constant. Changes in peak breadth and particle size confirmed that in cold-worked specimens the major effects of cold work were not eliminated during annealing at 288 "C, although a slight recovery process occurred. When a specimen of the alloy Cu3Au is heated to a temperature below the critical temperature (388ºC), long-range ordering tends to occur in a specimen containing less than the equilibrium amount of order characteristic of that temperature Ideally, a specimen of Cu3Au contains no long-range order if it has been quenched from above the critical temperature. Long-range order is reduced by cold work. If cold-worked specimens are heated, restoration processes such as recovery and recrystallization may occur,

A mine in the mountains of southeastern British Columbia is fast earning a reputation as the safest metal mining operation of all time. Already officially proclaimed as the safest mine in Canada, the H.B. mine of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada (Cominco) continues to advance its safety performance far in the lead of average accident frequencies in mines across the country. Official recognition came its way again this spring when the Cominco mine was awarded the John T. Ryan trophy for the fourth time in the last five years. This award is emblematic of top national safety performance of a metal mining operation. The H.B. mine is its only four-time winner. The Ryan award is based on a frequency of accidents involving lost time of more than six days. KYANITE schists in the Sudbury area have been generally described by Haw,' who has also given particuLar information on preliminary treatment of three large samples from Dryden township, Ontario.' Kyanite, garnet, biotite, quartz, and feldspar comprise the main ingredients of this ore. Kyanite is the valuable mineral. About 5½ tons of —35 +200 mesh product, made by dry rod milling, screening, and separation on the Exolon magnetic separator, were available for treatment by flotation. Magnetic separation had effectively reduced garnet and biotite so that flotation feed consisted essentially of kyanite, quartz, and feldspar, the kyanite content averaging 32 pct and representing about 86 pct of the kyanite in the original ore. Earlier work on kyanite at the Mines Branch, Ottawa, s-c employed an acid circuit, but to avoid production difficulties in the use of acids and at the same time take advantage of the fact that industrial minerals respond somewhat to soap flotation, it was decided first to investigate the higher pH levels. WITH the object of adapting high-school vocational courses to the industrial needs of the community, a few high-school officials in West -Virginia working with the School of Mines of the State university decided to try an innovation this year. The purpose of this experiment was to teach coal mining in two high schools situated in mining communities. We thought that if a course in coal mining would be included in the list of optional courses offered in the high school, it might interest some of the boys, and if the course were properly taught it would undoubtedly be of inestimable value to those boys who later decided to take up mining work as their vocation. This coal-mining course was started last September in the Berwind and Gary high schools in West Virginia. The high-school officials in their conferences with' us decided that we should work up the outline of this course and they would assign the science teachers of the schools as instructors, with ,the understanding that we would help 'these instructors with this work. We consented to all this and submitted -an outline to the school officials which they are following this year.

IN previous papers' ' details were given of the constructlon and use of an apparatus to study the rate of chlorine consumption and the rate of sul- fate and sulfur production when dilute aqueous chlorine solutions were allowed to react with pyrite and galena in acid solutions at or near room temperature. The reaction with pyrite was very rapid, and hence entirely transport-controlled in its kinetics, and produced only ferric and sulfate ions. THERE are three matters related to ore-hunting which I wish especially to discuss here: first, the paucity of the special writings applying to it; second, the failure of scientists to concern them-selves importantly with it; and, third, resting on these conditions, certain possible activities for economic geologists. First, as to the writings. Geological papers. are being produced in the United States alone at the rate of 10 to 12 shelf-feet per year.1 But papers specifically for the ore-hunter would go in a slim, annual pamphlet; all that have ever been written would go in a briefcase. The art of technical ore-hunting-geology conceived as a guide to ore-has only a scant literature.
