TWO types of automatic drilling controls, the Halliburton and the Hild, are now available and are coming into more or less general use in deep drilling. The primary function of both is to maintain a safe limit of torque on the drill pipe, this being accomplished by automatically controlling the weight or pressure on the cutting tool. Neither type will necessarily increase drilling speed, but by permitting advantage to be taken of "breaks" in the hole higher average cutting speed may be maintained. The control is essentially a safety device, and should be considered as such. It is not the purpose of this paper to discuss the merits of drilling controls, although the advantages over manual feed at the brake drum are obvious, but rather to point out some of the limitations. The Halliburton Control The Halliburton control is designed to operate during drilling through the agency of the draw works. Automatic and constant control of the torque on the bit is governed by clutches on the control itself, and the line shaft to drum shaft drives on the draw works. In operations other than drilling the control is simply a jackshaft between prime mover and draw works. It is, of course, adaptable to any type of power. Because control of the torque on the bit is dependent on the various ratios or clutch combinations available on the Halliburton control and the draw works, it follows that there are certain limitations in points of control. Table 1 shows the possible ratios which can be obtained with the control and a popular type of three-speed draw works, it being assumed that the highest possible gear combination—the combination which when engaged will suspend the least amount of weight—has a value of 1.00. According to the table there are "blind spots" in the series. This is true particularly among the lowest ratios, which are most used to suspend the major part of the weight when great depths are reached. The first use of graphite is lost in the mists of time. It was used by primitive man to make drawings on the walls of caves and by the Egyptians to decorate pottery. As early as 1400 A.D. graphite crucibles were being made in the Haffnerzell district of Bavaria. Through the Middle Ages graphite was confused with other minerals, especially galena and molybdenite. Two common names that are still used for the mineral are "Plumbago," meaning leadlike, and "Black Lead." The latter name implied that graphite is either composed of lead or at least contains a large percentage of it. Gessner is credited with having recognized it as a separate mineral in 1565, but its composition was not determined until 1779, when Scheele demonstrated that graphite oxidized to carbon dioxide, thus proving its carbon constitution. In 1789, Werner named it "graphite" from the Greek word "graphein," meaning to write. The United States has long relied on foreign countries for its graphite supplies. This reliance has been due more to the lack of suitable domestic graphites than to any particular preference for buying minerals overseas. Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) graphites were imported as early as 1820, and Madagascar graphites have been imported since the properties on that island were opened up about a hundred years later. Mexico has long supplied the United States with most of its requirements for amorphous graphite. Physical Properties and Classification Graphite is found in laminated, flaky aggregates disseminated in schistose rocks. It also occurs in veins and exhibits a foliated or fibrous structure. Graphite is a black lustrous mineral that crystallizes in the hexagonal system, with rhombohedral symmetry. The crystals have tabular form and are six-sided; the faces are commonly striated. The flakes have perfect basal cleavage and are opaque. When well crystallized, the flakes have a black metallic luster while the amorphous material is black and earthy, with a microcrystalline compactness. The flakes feel greasy. Graphite is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. It melts at approximately 3500°C and sublimes at about 4500°C. It is combustible in the presence of oxygen between 620° and 670°C, but is stable and chemically inert at ordinary temperatures.

High-field critical transport current density (J) measurements at 4.2 °K as a Junction of applied magnetic field (H) were made on samples of cold-rolled and annealed columbium with H parallel to J. Microscopic examination of the samples revealed a well-defined planar fiber structure produced by the cold rolling. J was found to he lower when fibers are parallel to the direction of magnetic field penetration than when they are perpendicular. This effect may he a consequence of the interaction of flux movement with fiber boundaries. THE severe changes in microstructure brought about by cold working superconductors leads to profound changes in their superconducting behavior. In particular, the ability of a superconductor to carry a transport current with zero resistance (the maximum value of this current density will be called "J" in the presence of large external magnetic fields (to be referred to as "H") is greatly influenced by the microstructure. In the case of columbium, LeBlanc and Little1 and Autler et a1.2 have observed an increase in J due to cold work. LeBlanc and Little also observed an anisotropy in J in cold-rolled columbium strips, which Hake et al.3-6 have shown to depend upon the angle between H (H ? J) and the rolling plane. An increase in J due to cold work has been found in a variety of high-field superconducting alloys3'4'7-9 as has the anisotropy effect.10 First explanations of why cold work raised J invoked the idea that dislocations carried the high-field supercurrents,8,11 since cold working drastically increases the dislocation density and presumably the number of supercurrent paths. However, recent ideas on the nature of high-field superconductivity together with new experimental evidence reveal that the bulk of certain superconductors can remain superconducting in high fields while carrying high transport currents. These later developments have been discussed by Berlin-court and Hake12 and a comprehensive review has been prepared by Berlincourt.13 According to the ideas of Gorter14 and Anderson,15 one would expect that the influence of microstructure on high-field supercurrent density will depend on tine interaction between microstructure and penetrating flux and on the direction of the Lorentz

The presence of nickel-chromium in pig iron made fro111 Cuban oles is so well known that the word "Mayari" is unconsciously associated with it. Since 1904, when exploration of the Mayari deposits of iron ore in northeastern Cuba was undertaken, there llas been increasing interest in these ores. Tlie Transactions contain numerous references to t1ieln.l This iron ore, which is shipped to the Tinited States in the nodulizecl state, has been thoroughly tested and found very valuable; the deposit covers over 25,000 acres and there is in sight over 500,000,000 tons of ore that, by systematic mining, runs practically constant in composition. With nickel and chromium present, also titanium in sufficient quantities to attract attention, as well as extremely low phosphorus and sulfur contents, the iron founder is naturally interested in the utilization of RInpari ore for pig iron for the better grades of finishrtl iron products. THE metal iron has physical and chemical properties which are somewhat different from those of steels, but a knowledge of the pure metal is a useful starting point in studying the behavior of steels. Solid iron exists in two different crystalline forms, called alpha (a) and gamma (?) iron, the former being the ordinary form at room temperature. When heated above the "A2 point," 1400°F. (760°C.), the metal becomes non-magnetic, and at the "As point," 1670°F. (910°C.), it undergoes a change in crystalline form to become gamma iron. In the range 1400 to 1670°F., it is sometimes called beta (0) iron to distinguish it from the magnetic alpha, but the two are identical in crystal structure. When gamma iron is further heated to 2550°F. (1400°C.), it changes into delta (d) iron, which is identical with beta or non-magnetic alpha iron. Pure iron melts (in a hydrogen atmosphere) at 2795°F. (1535°C.); the melting point is generally lowered by alloys or impurities. PROPERTIES OF IRON AT HIGH TEMPERATURES Many of the properties of iron undergo abrupt changes at the transition temperatures. (1) For example, in heating through the As point a sudden shrinkage in volume occurs. Similarly, melting is attended by sharp physical changes such as an increase in volume. Table 27 contains a summary of the measured physical properties of pure iron at several temperatures. Usually the properties change smoothly within the range of stability of a given form, but this is not always the case. For example, the specific heat reaches a sharp maximum at the A2 point although no transformation occurs. Solvent Powers of Liquid Iron. Liquid iron is capable of dissolving most of the other metals and many nonmetallic elements as well. Of the metals which are liquid at the melting point of iron only lead, silver, and bismuth refuse to dissolve to an appreciable extent. The non-metals presumably dissolve by virtue of the formation of an iron compound; for example, sulphur is thought to dissolve as the compound FeS. THE possible sources of potash salts in the United States have been considered from many points of view during the last several years, but it is only within the last two or three months that the situation has become acute. We import from Germany, the only source of large supply, more than $10,000,000 worth of potash salts annually, and this business has been badly crippled by the European war. If there was ever a time in our industrial existence when the necessity of providing for our own needs was more acute than it is now, we are not aware of it. One has only to study the price, lists of chemicals sent out by the large supply houses to see the change wrought within a very short time. Whether or no these prices are to maintain for a considerable time, no one can say; but it appears to be probable that we shall not see prices materially lower for a period of uncomfortable length, to say the least. It is not my purpose at this time to discuss the various sources of supply of potash salts that have been suggested or recommended. Some of them might afford a pleasing relief but all of them combined would not affect the situation seriously. If we are to have our own sources of potash salts, they will have to compare, in some efficient manner, with the sources upon which we have drawn during the last 20 or 30 years; i.e., they must exist-in minable quantities. It seems to me to be quite idle to speculate upon our domestic sources of potash if those sources are not of a character similar to those upon which we have so long depended. A few thousand or, perhaps,, a few hundred thousand dollars' worth of chemically derived 'potash may be produced under the stress of present conditions, but when we consider that each year demands more than $10,000,000 worth, we must look to underground sources; we must look to mines similar to the famous Stassfurt and Halle deposits. If we cannot mine potash salts, we shall have to do without them for a while.

In the testing of materials there exist various methods of recording graphically the behavior of a material subjected to tensile stress. Probably the most common method is to plot the tensile stress So, obtained by dividing the load P by the original area of cross section A0 at the start of the test, as a function of the strain e0, which is obtained by dividing the ?Lo or the change in the gauge length by the original gauge length Lo. A list of the symbols used here is given in Table 1. This method, while it has proved useful in the routine testing and comparison of various materials, does not have a very sound physical basis, as was first pointed out by P. Ludwikl, and consequently does not afford a very deep insight into the true physical behavior of the material under stress. Among the objections to this method may be mentioned: (1) that by dividing the load P at any stage of the test by the original area A. a fictitious stress is obtained, which does not actually exist; (2) that the strain e0 = ?L0 is not an exact expression for the true strain for large values of ?LO in per cent of Lo; (3) that when necking starts the strain varies considerably along the gauge length and the above expression no longer gives the true strain existing at any point on the outside of the bar; and (4) that the axial strain varies over the cross section of the necked portion and e0 does not represent an average of these strains over the cross section. Stresses taken from such a diagram would be only approximate and, if used to compare results of a test on a given material under simple tension with results obtained under combined stresses, certain errors would be thus introduced. In order to overcome some of these objections, various methods have been suggested, both as to the quantities to be measured and as to their graphical representation. The Smackover oil and gas field lies in Ouachita and Union Counties, Ark., in the south-central part of the state, in T.15 and 16S., R.15, 16, and 17W. It is 10 miles north of El Dorado, the principal business and railroad center in the south-central part of the state, and extends from the town of Smackover in all directions. Productive territory having an aggregate area of nearly 55 sq. mi. has been developed. It extends 6 miles from north to south and 12 miles from east to west. The field may be divided into two parts: the east district, which includes the area east of the town of Smackover, and the west district, which includes the area west of the town of Smackover. In relation to the neighboring productive fields of Arkansas, the Smackover field is 9 miles north of the El Dorado oil and gas field, 8 miles slightly west of north of the East El Dorado oil and gas field, and 16 miles east of the Stephens oil field. Smackover was discovered in May, 1922, when the Oil Operators Tnist drilled well No. 1 on the J. T. Murphy farm, in the southeast quarter of sec. 8, T.16S., R.15W. This well is located almost on the top of the Norphlet dome and was drilled to the Nacatoch sand. It had an initial open flow volume of 30,000,000 cu. ft. of dry gas per day, and a rock pressure of 950 lb. per sq. in. In July, 1922, the V. K. F. Co. completed the first oil well in sec. 29, T.l5S., R.l5W., on the north side of the Norphlet dome, and 3 miles north of the first gas well. This well started the active development of the north and northwest sides of the dome.] The field was extended westwards, when oil was discovered in the Nacatoch sand, during October, 1922, in sec. 4, T.l6S., R.l6W., 51/2 miles west of the original gas well. (Salt Lake Meeting, August, 1914) THE purpose of this paper is to review the history of the Drumlummon, one of the famous old mines of the West. Mining engineers, when sent to examine new mines in old districts, or to decide whether an old property, under new conditions, will pay to re-open, have had difficulty in learning anything authentic regarding workings which are under water, and historical facts about the working character of the ore, the total production, and the value of the ore with increasing depth. Not many years elapse after the pumps are pulled, before maps, books and records are destroyed, and the value of the publications of the Institute would be increased if they contained the history of many old mines now abandoned. The unsuccessful efforts of the writer quite recently in trying to obtain reliable information about a gold mine which was reported to have produced several million dollars between 1880 and 1888, the workings of which are now partially caved and under water, impressed upon his mind the desirability of having a permanent record of old properties. In this particular case, the owners insisted that under present conditions of improved methods of treatment -particularly by the use of cyanide, which was not an applied process when the mine was operated, the property. could be made to pay a handsome profit on ore left in sight in the old workings, but no assay records could be found to confirm these assurances, and even the records of bullion shipments had been destroyed. If surveys and maps were made as the work progressed, no trace of them could be found, and therefore opening of the ground through a new shaft and drifts therefrom would be attended by some risk while exploring near the old workings. Fatal accidents by flooding under these conditions have occurred, and as an evidence that miners have fears of such dangers, it was urged upon the Mining Committee during a recent session of the Montana Legislature, by a delegation of

The reactions that occur in the basic open-hearth process are complicated and are subject to many different factors such as temperature, slag composition and rate of boiling of the bath. It is difficult, therefore, to present an extended theoretical discussion of open-hearth operations without confusing the theory of the process with the application of the theory. This paper attempts to present some of the theory of the open-hearth process without mentioning theory at any point, simply giving some of the practical applications of results founded both on theory and practice and on experimental work both in small and large furnaces. It is hoped that an answer to a number of questions commonly asked by the open-hearth operator may be found in this paper. Discussion of the subject matter is taken up more or less in the order in which a heat ie worked, beginning with the oxidation of the scrap charged, sulfur absorption by the scrap, calcination of the limestone, and extending into the pig iron for the charge, the slags formed during the process, and some of the phenomena occurring in deoxidation of the steel and in its action in the molds. Oxidation of Scbap When scrap is charged into a furnace it immediately begins to oxidize, Oxidation is carried out by.three reactions: Fe + H20 + FeO + Hz (absorbs heat) (1) Fe + C02 + FeO + CO (absorbs heat) (2: Fe+ ½O2 + FeO (gives off heat) (3: The product of oxidation contains some Fe3O4, but FeO usually predominates on account of the iron present in close contact with the scale formed For a given type of scrap the amount of oxidation is controlled by thc fuel and by the excess air being carried in the furnace, the temperature 01 the furnace, and the length of time that the scrap is in contact with the furnace gases. In general, less oxidation occurs when the furnace is rur hot so that the scrap melts rapidly. The following investigation was undertaken to develop a method for determining with reasonable accuracy the depth of overburdens of 100 ft. or less. Seismic methods seemed to offer good possibilities. The problem differed from that of the familiar salt-dome location in that the depth of overburden to be determined is much less than is encountered in oil prospecting. This means that a much shorter time interval must be measured with accuracy. Refraction methods seem at present to offer greater possibilities than reflection. The air sound persists for from 0.1 to 0.5 sec., because of echoes, and seismic reflections coming during this time are difficult to detect. A seismometer sensitive to vertical vibrations only offers possibilities and has been used here with some success. It is hoped that the application of this type of seismometer to reflection shooting in this region may be investigated still further. The apparatus used consisted of a carbon-button seismometer followed by a three-stage, transformer-coupled, vacuum-tube amplifier and a General Radio string oscillograph. Time marks are provided by a 1000-cycle, 600-r.p.m., synchronous motor provided with five spokes which intercept the light to the camera at 1/50 sec. intervals. This motor is driven by a two-stage vacuum-tube amplifier of 3 watt output, actuated by a tuning fork. The power supply for the seismometer amplifier is one 2-volt storage and one 45-volt B battery. The motor amplifier is powered by a 6-volt storage battery and 6 to 225-volt, 15-watt motor generator. The temperature-frequency characteristics of the tuning fork have been determined and for ordinary working temperatures the error in time that would be introduced is less than M millisecond for time intervals up to 100 milliseconds. The impact is produced by a sledge blow for surface distances less than 100 ft. and dynamite for greater distances. Two steel balls with wires attached form an electric circuit through a 1-ft. piece of railroad rail upon which they rest. Until the advent of the porphyry coppers and the introduction of flotation which soon followed, crushing and grinding for many years proceeded along somewhat stereotyped lines, without important alteration in type of machinery. For the finer crushing and grinding, stamps, rolls, and various patterns of Huntington and Chilean mills were in general use. Ball-mills were in use abroad, but owing to their small capacity and the high cost of screens and steel, they never obtained much footing in the United States. Tube-mills were first introduced into the crushing departments of cyanide plants when it was found that for crushing finer than 30-mesh other types of crushing machinery were not efficient. In order to crush with one pass, these mills were made 18 to 22 ft. (5.5 to 6.7 m.) in length. Pebbles were used as a grinding medium and the mills were lined with either silex blocks or fragments of quartz or flint pebbles set in cement. While the cylindrical tube pebble-mill had been used to some extent in small installations of concentration mills, the first instance of its use on a large scale was at the concentrating plant of the Miami Copper Co., where 8-ft. by 22-in. (2.5-m. by 55.9-cm.) Hardinge mills were tried out against Chileans. The results of these experiments led to the gradual replacement of the Chilean by the Hardinge mill. Robert Franke published an article' describing the work done, comparing the two types of mills. At the same time, according to Franke, a test was run using a 6-ft. (1.8-m.) Hardinge ball-mill as a substitute for rolls for intermediate crushing on 1/2-in. material. According to Franke, this mill was soon discarded, since it was found that to obtain the desired product the mill must be limited in capacity. The Miami Copper Co. made no test with other types of ball- or pebble-mills. Following this example, others installed the conical type; and when the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. decided to build a concentrator, it adopted the conical mill. More than 20 years have passed since the publication of Lindgren and Ransome's report on the Cripple Creek District,1 which was made when the district was much more active and prosperous than in recent years. They concluded that the output of the district, which had reached its maximum of about $18,200,000 in 1900, would gradually decline, and their conclusion has been confirmed by records of subsequent production. Between 1905 and 1915 annual declines were partly compensated by encouraging increases, especially in 1908, 1914, and 1915; but a rapid continuous decline followed, due largely to the war and its after-effect's, until in 1922 the value of output was only slightly more than $4,000,000. It rose to nearly $5,000,000 in 1924, but declined again in 1925 and in 1926, when it was about $4,400,000, and represented ores mainly from deep levels in the Cresson and Portland mines. The profitable operations of these two mines were the principal factors leading to a study of ore at deep levels in the district by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Colorado Metal Mining Fund. Operations since they made these statements have verified the first two, but call for some modification of the third. Rich telluride ore is being mined at a profit in the Portland mine 3000 ft. below the present surface, 07. 5000 ft. below the original surface of the Cripple Creek volcano, as interpreted by Lindgren and Ransome. The question arises, therefore, as to the number and extent of such deep deposits, and the answer, so far as it can now be given, must be based mainly on structural data, supplemented by data on the processes of ore deposition. In a constant-load creep test, if the density of nlobile dislocations is assumed constant for strains exceeding that corvesponding to the minimum creep rate, it is shown that the creep rate may be approximated by the equation where E is the nominal strain, o0. is the initial stress, and a' the stress fov unit dislocation velocity. The constant C contains the mean density of mobile dislocations and n is a measure of the stress sensitivity of dislocation celocity. This equation is shoum to be applicable to published data on an alloy steel and on nickel. The degree of plastic instability and hence the creep ductility is dependent on the calue of n for these materials. When instability becomes gross and local macroscopic necking occurs, the assumptions are no longer valid. On the basis of this equation, and the strain-time relation derived from it, a method of predicting the creep behavior at different stresses is suggested. MOst analyses of creep data have been concerned with time-dependent transient creep or time-independ- ent secondary creep in constant-stress tests. The far more widely used constant-load test has been neglected in terms of a mechanistic approach. In general, since the strains involved are usually small, the same laws for transient creep may be applied to both types of tests. However, there is no steady-state creep in a constant-load test since the stress increases continuously. Any apparent steady state observed on a strain-time plot is either fortuitous or illusory, and is generally revealed as a continuously varying creep rate on a carefully constructed strain rate vs time plot.* Transient creep may be understood in terms of a simple differential equation representing the change in mobile dislocation density with time:' where p is the density of mobile dislocations. The first term on the right is related to first-order kinetics of dislocation multiDlication and the second to second-order kinetics of exhaustion. One of the means of letting the membership know what is going on in the mining; metallurgical and chemical fields, and by far the most important, has been our monthly Bulletin. To publish this costs money, and to partly defray the costs, it was decided to accept such advertising as could be secured. The A. I. M. E. is the only one of the American National engineering societies whose dues are as low as $10 per year, and it actually spends more upon the Bulletin and Transactions than the sun total it receives for clues. Hence the need of advertising revenues. We are planning even greater improvements for your Bulletin-improvements that will help you in your work. It will mean a better publication, with more information than ever before. To successfully carry out our plans, we must have your co-operation. We are not asking you for financial, but for your moral support. With that we shall accomplish a great deal. Under sulfur in coal, is usually understood that form of sulfur which is combined with iron and known as pyrite. It occurs in the form of balls, lenses, nodules, continuous layers, thin sheets, or flakes, both in horizontal planes and vertical cleavage fissures. But pyrites also occur as very fine microscopic particles, or nodules, disseminated through the compact coal. This form has had but very little consideration. Finally, there is sulfur in coal in an amicroscopic form (not visible with an ordinary microscope), probably combined with the organic matter that exists in the coal. This form has had considerable attention from a scientific standpoint, but has probably not been recognized enough on the economic side. One or the other, or both, of these two latter forms may comprise the larger part of the sulfur content of coal, especially after it has been washed or otllerwise prepared for use. Pyrites in Microscopic Particles All coals that have been examined by the author contained a varying amount of sulfur in very small globules, or particles, of pyrite. These particles are seen in a thin [section as roughly rounded opaque dots, Figs. 1 to 10. When isolated, they are generally shown to be approximately spherical in shape, with a rough outer surface. They vary in diameter from a few microns to a hundred microns, the majority messuring from 25 to 40 microns; relatively few exceed the latter diameter. They are, therefore, very small objects. Their size is best appreciated by comparing the illustrations, in which they are shown. at a magnifiea tion of 100 diameters, with some known area like the period used in the ordinary printed page. The period is about 0.6 mm. in diameter, and . when magnified 100 times, will cover a circular area of about 2 1/2 in. in diameter, or all but the corners of the illustrations. The illustrations, therefore, represent an area about as large as an ordinary period, and the pyrite globules form but a small part of the total area. For a great many years fusion welding has been used in and around petroleum refineries, but it is only within six or seven years that the more important pressure vessels have been constructed by this process, because before that time the properties of fusion welds would not withstand such rigorous service. Since the adoption of fusion welding for the construction of this equipment, the refiner has required pressure vessels suitable for operation over a very wide range of conditions. On the one hand, vessels must operate at extremely high temperatures, in the range of 950" to 1000° F., and on the other vessels must be suitable for operation at sub-zero temperatures down as low as —75" F. Also, vessels are required suitable for operation at pressures upwards of 1000 lb. per sq. in., and as low as a 29-in. vacuum. In addition, vessels are required to withstand the attack of very corrosive mediums. It has been a rather difficult task for the fabricator to meet all of these requirements, but as a result of the extensive research carried on by steel manufacturers and several fabricators of class I vessels, practically all of these demands have been met. In order to meet the refiners' requirements for this wide range of conditions, the fabricator has worked closely with the metallurgist. This has enabled him to choose the proper base metal for each service condition, but it has been the fabricator's problem to develop a welding rod and welding technique, as well as a heat-treatment, that would produce in the welded vessel characteristics in and around the weld comparable to those in the base metal. Where corrosion is not a serious problem, and where the operating temperatures are not too high, ordinary carbon steel has served very well. But, when corrosion is serious, and/or when the temperatures are either very high or very low, it is necessary to use some form of alloy steel to give satisfactory service. MORE than 20 years have passed since the publication of Lindgren and Ransome's report on the Cripple Creek District,1 which was made when the district was much more active and prosperous than in recent years. They concluded that the output of the district, which had reached its maximum of about $18,200,000 in 1900, would gradually decline, and their conclusion has been confirmed by records of subsequent production. Between 1905 and 1915 annual declines were partly compensated by encouraging increases, especially in 1908, 1914, and 1915; but a rapid continuous decline followed, due largely to the war and its after effects, until in 1922 the value of output was only slightly more than $4,000,000. It rose to nearly $5,000,000 in 1924, but declined again in 1925 and in 1926, when it was about $4,400,000, and represented ores mainly from deep levels in the Cresson and Portland mines. The profitable operations of these two mines were the principal factors leading to a study of ore at deep levels in the district by the U. S. Geological Survey in coopera-tion with the Colorado Metal Mining Fund.
