Use of coal thermal dryers has steadily increased since 1928 when one of the predecessor companies of the present Consolidation Coal Cu. constructed a complete preparation plant with thermal dryers. Today there are about 25 additional preparation plants that, all together, use over 65 individual thermal dryers of almost every type. The thermal dryer is a heat generator and the unit may have a separate furnace or a firebox that is an integral part of the dryer. It is also a materials handling device that allows an intimate mixture of wet coal and hot gases with instrumentation for temperature control and. in some cases, the more difficult flow rate of hot gases. The materials handling portion of the dryer is subject to the normal wear and teal of any similar device plus effects of heat, water vapor, moisture: and, sometimes, acid. With present emphasis on air pollution. most fine coal dryers have wet scrubbers.

In situ mining is no longer a "last ditch" approach for recovery of uranium, but a proven and competitive method of exploiting sedimentary deposits. Today, in any feasibility study of uranium properties, the project manager would be prudent to compare the economics of in situ methods with conventional surface and underground techniques. In this comparison of in situ and open-pit mining, John J. Borkert and Carl E. Gerity of Occidental Minerals Corp., evaluated a group of hypothetical uranium deposits using the three most sensitive depositional characteristics of depth, size, and grade. Their conclusion: in situ is generally the better method to maximize total net profits and return on investment. At uranium values of $40 per pound, their analysis found open-pit mining to he unprofitable, generally, when stripping ratios were greater than 30:1, the deposit grade-thickness (GT) was 0.5 or less, or the ratio of depth to GT was greater than 200.

This paper describes the development and application of a dynamic simulation model of ground movement in an underground mine. Ground movement and related stress distributions with or without stowing are computed as the mining face advances. Pressure profiles plotted for different face positions indicate the presence of a front abutment with a maximum value of four times the original ground pressure but no back abutment in the gob. The surface strain is considerably reduced with increase in packing density in the gob up to a certain value. Beyond this value, the reduction in the strain is minimal, indicating an economic level of packing. As a result of model experiments with different physical systems and geological parameters, it has been concluded that when one of the coordinates for the subsidence and the strain curves is made dimensionless in terms of the critical width, the relationship will hold true for all physical situations. This was in agreement with the NCB observations for different panel lengths.

IN, diamond-drill work, a true sample consists of all the material cut by the bit-both core and cuttings. As the recovery of this sample is the object of diamond drilling, the utmost care should be taken to secure it. Speed of drilling and low costs are of little value if an inaccurate sample is obtained. The engineer in charge must study his material and lay out the plan of sampling, and then see that the drill runner follows his instructions; for the runner may be more interested in obtaining a large footage than in developing accurate methods of sampling. Before examining a fire-clay in the labori~tory for its resistance to heat or to fluxes, the sample is always ground to an impalpable powder. But when the clay is actually used for the manufacture of bricka, blocks, pots, etc., it is not ground to a uniform size, the particles varying from coarse grains to the finest slimes. The natural inference is that the tests with finely-ground substances mill give lower results than if the materials are tested just as they are going to be used. The, following experiments were made to find out how far this inference is justified. The method employed for fusion was Seger's direct method,* and, for fluxing, the modified Bischof method, described in the paper on that subject presented at the present meeting, The first question to be decided was, how large the test-cones ought to be made, to include representative proportions of the diflerentrsized particles colnposing the mixture. IN a study of the rate of decomposition of %-in. cubes of limestone, dolomitic limestone, and dolomite in a sweeping nitrogen atmosphere, Joseph, Beatty, and Bitsianes' found that the zone of calcination advanced at substantially a constant rate at a given temperature. The purpose of this paper is to show that their data indicate at least two processes occurring when the above carbonates decompose. It is suggested that there are two processes occurring consecutively, one the limiting process in a given temperature range and the other the limiting process over another temperature range. When cast hypoeutectic Zn-Ti alloys are rolled, the TiZn15 compound particles arising from eutectic decomposition form a network of fibers promoting improved creep resistance.' The effect is magnified with increasing titanium content and extends to hy-pereutectic concentrations. Strip produced from the latter-type alloys, however, also contains large, primary crystals of the compound that tend to initiate cracking during subsequent fabrication operations. In a study of the influence of various casting modifications on the size and distribution of these crystals, the phase relationships existing between the eutectic and the TiZnIs intermetallic compound in the Zn-Ti system were of major interest. Although several in- vestigators1 4 have explored the equilibria within this compositional range, their results show considerable lack of agreement. Consequently, with the exception of the solvus boundary, the constitution of this system containing up to approximately 1.0 wt pct Ti was . The findings are reported in the present note.

In the course of annealing studies on molybdenum, it has been observed that a carbide precipitates preferentially on internal and external surfaces. The evidence for this is as follows. Electropolished bend specimens prepared from two grades of commercial molybdenum were loaded in a closed but unsealed tantalum can, and were annealed for 1 hr at 2000°C under a vacuum of 1 x 10-4 torr. The compositions of these materials are summarized in Table I. The samples were then slowly cooled at an average rate of 10°C per min, and were examined when cool. The surfaces of specimens prepared from Molybdenum A were consis- tently clean and featureless, except for thermally etched grain boundaries, see Fig, l(a). On the other hand, Molybdenum B had surfaces containing many needle- and featherlike markings, see Fig. l(b). These features were present in all surface grains, and within a given grain belonged to families

DRILLING fluids as an aid in drilling holes into the earth have been in use successfully for more than a half a century. Originally used in a primitive fashion in water well drilling before the turn of the century, drilling fluids came into their own in 1901 when they were incorporated as an indispensable part of the newly invented rotary oil drilling method. Since drilling fluids have been the basic factor in successful modern oil well drilling, at- tested by the dramatic growth of the U. S. petroleum industry, their study and development have naturally taken place in the oil industry. An abundance of engineering and scientific literature has appeared on the subject of drilling fluids. Application to Exploration Drilling The drilling fluid system is understandably called the heart of the rotary oil drilling rig. Any other type of rotary rig, such as the diamond drill, should benefit by the incorporation of mud fluids in the drilling scheme.

THE occurrence of copper ores at Garimenapenta, 14 59 min 30 sec N Lat., 79 33 min 10 sec E Long., in Nellore district, Madras State, India, has been examined and investigated on numerous occasions during the past two centuries.' No tangible orebody was ever located as a result of all the ex- tensive trenching and shafting done in the area by various agencies. However, during 1933 Messrs. Piepmeyer & Co., a German firm engaged by one of the leaseholders of the area, carried out an electrical survey using inductive methods.' On the basis of certain strong indications found in their survey, they recommended that the prospect be proved by drilling or shafting. But for want of financial backing no further work was carried out. When the Madras government more recently proposed investigation, Dr. Krishnan, then Supt. This paper discusses the effect of the computer revolution on Penn State's facilities and personnel and provides a short history of computer applications in mining in the Department of Mineral Engineering. The computer era began in 1955 at Penn State when the engineering faculty built a sizeable vacuum-tube computer. Since that time, a succession of machines has introduced many changes and presented a variety of opportunities and problems to the university's computer personnel and to the community of users. This paper discusses both the changes in computers and the accompanying problems that occur in a university computing environment. A historical summary of computer simulation programs developed within the Department of Mineral Engineering is presented along with information on computer applications in ventilation, statistics, mathematical programming, coal preparation, and other areas. Finally, computer plans for the future are discussed in terms of the develop- ments in the Charles B. Manula Computer Library and in terms of ongoing and future computer-related research projects.

Field experience in uranium has shown it is most economical to ram through a drilling program to obtain maximum footage per drill hour. Drift surveys can then determine the course of the holes. Using this method is generally cheaper than paying the additional cost involved in using the drilling technique and equipment necessary to maintain straight holes. Factors Affecting Direction of Bit Travel: In all rotary-drilled holes there is an interplay of forces or conditions affecting the direction of bit travel. Rarely is a straight vertical hole obtained. One of the major factors is weight on a drill string. In looking at a joint of drill stem it is hard to imagine its being quite flexible, but flexing of the steel increases when many joints are made up together, and even a slight weight added to the upper portion causes a buckling or spiraling effect in the hole. The result is that the bit deviates from the vertical.

The Bureau of Mines devised a direct flotation method for treating low-grade carnallite (KCl*MgC12*6H20) and sylvinite (a mixture of KC1 and NaCl) ores characterized by a high content of water-insoluble impurities. The procedure consists of flocculation-depression of the insoluble slimes; decomposition leach (carnallite only); potash rougher, cleaner, and recleaner flotation; and final product leaching. The technique eliminates the necessity of removing the water-insoluble slimes by mechanical or flotation desliming. Laboratory results demonstrated that the direct flotation procedure, when compared with conventional techniques, yielded equivalent or improved flotation results with equal or less reagent consumptions. The direct flotation method recovered 81.6% of the solid phase KC1 from camallite ore and 79.7% of the KCl from sylvinite ore in final products containing 60.5 and 60.9% K2O, respectively. A flowsheet incorporating the described flotation procedure is presented.

Scientific elite of the Minerals Beneficiation Div. assembled in Denver, Colo., September 17 to 20 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Froth Flotation in the United States of America. In his warm address of welcome at the opening luncheon, John W. Vanderwilt, President, Colorado School of Mines, recalled his experience in Bonanza which coincided with the early days of flotation. In those years the scientific and engineering aspects of the process which we know today were little understood and operating the flotation circuit was considered an "art." Luncheon Chairman H. L. McNeill caught the flavor of the old days in an anecdote which recalled the mill nightmares to many present with the agonized words, "Oh God, what's happened to the concentrate now!" It was an appropriate gesture when he called the names of some of the flotation greats for presentation to the assembly; and many an "artist" there was among them!

Exploration for metallic mineral deposits is carried on by those special adaptations of methods which the explorer believes will yield most economically or satisfactorily the particular answer sought. In this project the usual methods of geologic observation, recording, and interpretation, when combined with magnetic geophysical methods and geochemical soil sampling, led to disclosures of appreciable zinc mineralization where none was visible in surface exposure. Since 1945 considerable work has been done with geochemical prospecting methods, chiefly in determining the presence and distribution of various elements existing in minor amounts in rocks, soil, vegetation or waters of mineralized areas. Such work, in which the U. S. Geological Survey has taken the lead, finds a ready place in the field repertoire of the exploration geologist as a supplement, not a substitute, for other methods. The Chollet project was carried out in 1951 by the American Smelting & Refining Co. near its Van Stone mine in northern Stevens County, Wash., in the area shown in Fig. 1

A continuous on-line particle-size analysis system for solid/liquid suspensions is described. The basic sensor utilizes a centrifugal principle to separate particles according to size, the resultant separation being measured by means of beta-ray attenuation. Results obtained when analyzing a variety of materials at sizes from 65 mesh (210 µ) to 20 w are discussed in detail. Accuracies better than 2% are demonstrated. The effects of particle specific gravity, and mixtures of materials of diverse specific gravities, are discussed from both a practical and a theoretical viewpoint. It is demonstrated that particle specific gravity has a minimal effect on the size reading obtained. This renders the instrument suitable for handling materials where the ratio of light to heavy component may change. The design of the first commercial installation of this instrument is described in detail. This installation will be capable of analyzing three streams in sequence, measurement at three particle sizes being effected on each stream.

DRILLING through caving formations in diamond drill holes at depths greater than 2000 ft has long been a serious problem. These caving formations are normally passed only by casing the hole or by cementing the hole. Casing the hole is possible only when a resulting smaller hole is acceptable. In as much as only a limited number of reductions are economically practical, cementing is frequently considered the only method suitable for solving these problems. Cementing either by pumping a slurry into the hole or by dropping cylinders containing cement has proved satisfactory on holes under 2000 ft. In holes substantially deeper than 2000 ft these methods are not satisfactory, since during the pumping process cement separates out, whereas cylinders usually break before the bottom of the hole is reached. DRAINAGE of acid mine water into surface streams of coal mining areas is one of the most serious problems of stream pollution, since there is no known method that completely prevents its forming and no economically feasible treatment after it has formed. The mine acid problem differs from other pollution hazards because acid production does not end with cessation of mining but actually becomes more evident when pumping is stopped. The acid problem in the Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky bituminous coal areas of the U. S. began with the first operation in 1761, and the volume of acid discharge today is largely the cumulative result of years of mining. Provided they lie above the drainage area, the oldest mines, now long abandoned, are almost without exception producing acid in the same manner as those now operating or recently abandoned. Flotation of rutile with N-benzoyl-N-phenyl-hydroxyhmine (N-BPHA) has been investkated. Initially, floatability tests were performed in a Hallimond tube. The results indicated that rutile was floatable at pH 2-4 with N-BPHA concentration between 2 x 10-3 mol/L and 2 x 10-2 mol/L. Selectivity against hematite was recognized when operating at pH values below 2. Following the hypothesis of the formation of a surface chelate between N-BPHA and titanium ion, this compound was precipitated from a solution of Ti (SO4)2 to which N-BPHA was added. I. R. spectrometry of the rutile before and after treatment with N-BPHA solution confirmed the presence of this compound on the rutile surface. Adsorption isotherm and kinetics were determined by analyzing N-BPHA in solution with an U. V. technique. A hypothesis on the way N-BPHA is adsorbed on rutile is presented.

In Gila County, Ariz., the Jaquays Mining Co. still finds the mining of asbestos a worthwhile and economical venture. At a time when domestic productive capacity is being reduced because of rapidly rising costs and tough environmental dust standards, this firm has dramatically brought its mine and mill operation into full productive capacity and compliance with both Federal and State regulations. Jaquay's Mining Corp. owns four underground mines in the Tonto National Forest, located approximately 32 miles north of the Globe-Miami District in Arizona. Only one mine, the El Dorado, is presently active. It mines an estimated 45,000 tpy of ore and waste. From this figure about 3000 tpy of fiber (No. one crude to Grade 4T) and fiberized shorts (No, seven) are recovered at the firm's mill, located in Globe, Ariz. Based on current ore reserves, the El Dorado mine has an estimated life between 15 to 17 years, assuming current mining rates and stable market conditions.
