HAVING told you about steel in the previous chapter, it seems to me necessary to speak here of brass for the same reason, for it bears the same relation to copper that steel does to iron. It is the opinion of some concerning both of these that they are true minerals because Pliny in his Natural History calls it aurichalcum and says that it has its own ore; he does not say, however, where it is found, and I have not heard from anyone else that it has been found anywhere, and, surely, if it had been found when he wrote, it would also be found today. Since I have no knowledge other than that gained through my own eyes, I tell you as a certainty that just as steel is iron converted by art into almost another kind of metal, so also brass is copper given a yellow color by art. Surely it was a splendid discovery, for which we must praise the alchemists,* although perhaps whoever discovered it was deceived, thinking that he had made gold from copper. INTRODUCTION The characteristics of feed and product of any size reduction operation are normally expressed as mean size, the size corresponding to 80 percent undersize or the percentage below a specified size or specific surface area. But the feed has a distribution of sizes and quite often it becomes essential to obtain a product of desired distribution. In such cases, size distribution of feed is related to product by matrix methods. The technique of matrix representation of crushing operation was proposed by Broadbent and Calcott (1 to 4). They divided the complete crushing mechanism of coal into breakage, selection and classifying functions for a closed-circuit system to establish relations between the feed and product distribution. Ellis, Ray and Venables (6) suggested an empirical method of determining the breakage matrix by combining the characteristic functions and proposed the following hypotheses: 1. The breakage of individual size fractions passing through the mill at a given rate is the same whether passed separately or as part of a mixed feed. 2. The breakage of a mixed feed may be estimated from the products of individual size fractions passed through the mill separately at a rate at which they would be crushed as part of the mixed feed. This method is stated to be applicable when there is no interaction between the individual sizes.

Sampling of an orebody has a number of purposes. In the initial phase, it is necessary to define the limits of the orebody and mineral content to the extent that it can be stated whether it is, in fact, an economic orebody. Also, samples must be generated so that geological and metallurgical evaluations can be made. Finally, when sufficient information concerning the geology, mineralogy, and metallurgy are known, a mining method and plan can be developed and the metallurgical; plants constructed to process the ores as they become available. With today's large, complex open pit copper mines, single sampling methods would be inadequate. Diamond drilling, percussion drilling, underground shafts and drifts all play a part in the total orebody, definition. At Anamax Mining Company's Twin Buttes mine, sampling and orebody definition.wil1 eventually lead to the existence of three metallurgical processing plants and, perhaps, an underground mining operation. A 30 000 tons per day sulfide concentrator was placed in operation in September 1969 and a 10 000 tons per day oxide leaching plant was placed into service in May 1975. The aim of this presentation is to historically discuss the orebody sampling that has been done at Twin Buttes, briefly describe the orebody, and discuss the analytical methods currently used to assist the geologist, metallurgist and mine planner in their respective evaluations.

OPERATIONS of the Braden Copper Co. are in the Chilean Andes, southeast of Santiago. Most remote of the company communities is Sewell, a town of 12,000 people, 7000 ft above sea level at the junction of the Coya and Teniente rivers. Four miles down the Coya River is the smelter town of Caletones, elevation 4500 ft, with a population of about 3000. At the junction of the Coya and Cachapoal rivers 24 miles below Sewell is Coya, eleva- tion 2500 ft, location of the company's two hydro- electric plants. The principal accounting offices; steel, iron, and brass foundries; railroad shops; and major mechanical repair and fabricating shops are at Rancagua in the central Chilean valley, 44 miles from Sewell. The company owned narrow-gage railroad connects with the Chilean national railroad at Rancagua and above Coya is the only modern means of travel. El Teniente mine at Sewell is the largest under- ground copper mine in the world. The mill, at the portal of the main tunnel, has a capacity of 34,000 tons of crude ore daily, although production is lower during the winter beacause of electric power restrictions. When operating at capacity the mill produces 2000 tpd of copper concentrates and 32,000 tpd of tailings. Tonnage of tailings is equivalent to about 100,000 tons of pulp at normal water to solid ratio.

Forty-five years have passed since I discovered the extensive and remarkable diatom-earth beds at Monterey, California., and now I have the satisfaction of bringing to notice still another wonderful deposit in the heart of Arizona. The Monterey beds mere described at the Philadelphia Academy,* and specimens were sent to Prof. J. W. Bailey, West Point, N. Y., at that time the leading American authority upon such microscopic relics of organic life. The earth from both localities is snow-white and pulverulent. It rubs off' like soft chalk upon the fingers when handled, and has the general appearance of chalk. But, unlike the Monterey beds, these newly-discovered deposits consist largely of volcanic ash, through which the siliceous shells of the diatoms are distributed. These deposits are in the central portion of the San Pedro valley,† in the southeastern corner of Pinal county. The region of their greatest development is a few miles south of the mining town of Mammoth, on the east bank of the stream, and near Redington, some 40 m. N. of Benson, on the Southern Pacific railway. The altitude is about 2600 ft. above tide. This portion of the San Pedro valley lies between the high Catalina and Rincon ranges on the west and the Galiuro mts. on the east. The introduction oE computer control in the grinding circuit of the New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited concentrator in the early 1970's gave smoother operation at optimum performance. The ore feedrate and water additions to the grinding circuit were controlled to operate each of the ball mill/ rake classifier grinding units at the upper limit of the circulating load while classifier overflow density was maintained to give a product size and pulp density suitable for flotation. An incremental expansion of the concentrator in 1981-82 included the installation of hydrocyclones in closed circuit with three of the four ball mills. Without the rake classifiers in circuit the previous control strategy could not be used and the complex interaction of hydrocyclone performance characteristics when classifying coarse grained sulphide ore resulted in the over-grinding of the lead mineral galena. Testwork aimed at optimising grinding circuit performance recognised the enhanced tendency of higher specific gravity minerals to report to the cyclone underflow. The data has been evaluated on an individual mineral basis and then used to develop a model For grinding circuit control. The development of the model which uses inputs of ore feedrate, metal content of the Feed and slurry density of the cyclone overflow to predict the size of the minerals in the grinding circuit product is described and model predictions are compared with plant performance.

The occurrence of minerals of nickel and cobalt at Mine La Motte is probably known to every mineralogist. I will not attempt to describe these minerals, but, before entering on my subject, will briefly mention the ores, etc., which call for metallurgical treatment and enter into the composition of our mattes. Our staple lead-ore, the dressed galena, is the chief source of nickel and cobalt. It carries but a small percentage of these metals, viz.: 0.2 to 0.3 percent. usually, though when much copper pyrites is contained in the gangue, the amount of nickel and cobalt may be as great as 1.0 to 1.5 per cent. Next in importance is the ((middle product" of the dressingworks, consisting of the sulphides of iron (and copper) with gangue and galena. This usually carries 20 to 23 per cent. of lead, 0.5 to 1.0 per cent. of copper and 2.5 to 3.5 per cent. of nickel and cobalt. A larger percentage of copper always carries with it an increase of nickel and cobalt. In some few cases 12 to 15 per cent. of copper gives 6.5 to 8.0 per cent of these metals. FOR over four years, since the revolution of 1917, Russia has been cut off from the Western world. Political and general economical reforms have attracted the attention of the public and business world, but mining men have had no information as to the situation in their branch of industry, as various articles which have appeared in the European and American press gave little information as to actual conditions in our country. The power of the Soviets did not affect the Ural provinces nor Ukraine or Asiatic Russia (Siberia, Turkestan, etc.) during 1918 and 1919, and, as is well known, the mineral wealth of the republic lies within those boundaries. In the Ural Mountains are copper, gold, and platinum; in Siberia, silver, lead, zinc, and gold, and the coal deposits in Koushetz district; in Ukraine, there are the coal fields of Donetz and the iron mines of Krivvy Rog, and silver, lead, zinc, copper, oil, etc. in the Cauca-sus. The mineral resources of Central Russia are the coal fields of Moscow (low-grade and brown coal), turf deposits, iron mines in Tula and Kalonga provinces, and quarries of granite and other building materials.

INTRODUCTION Uranium mining in the Grants Mineral Belt has undergone changes from methods pioneered during the 1950's and has now become fairly standardized throughout the district. The orebodies vary in size and shape and have been most successfully mined by using modified room and pillar methods with pillar recovery. This paper will expand on methods and equipment that are being used and modifications of these that will increase productivity and efficiency. GEOLOGICAL BACKGROUND The petrology of the Grants Mineral Belt consists of alternating layers of sandstone and shales (mudstone), with occasional thin layers of coal. The sandstones are aquifers which are generally artesian to some extent. The shales are bentonitic and decompose into extremely sloppy mud when exposed to water. Figure 1 shows a typical geologic section. Most of the uranium produced in the Grants Mineral Belt comes from the Westwater Canyon member of the Morrison Formation and occurs as scattered ore bodies throughout the formation. This formation consists of layers of bentonitic shale and sandstone of varying degrees' of cementing and grain size. It is also a very significant artesian aquifer. The unconfined compressive strength of the various formations is not high, as shown in Table I. It is important to note that these represent average values and a great range may exist within a single formation, especially In the Westwater which is the ore formation. [ ]

Duquesne Light Co.'s Portal No. 3 mine, in the Warwick group of mines in Southwestern Pennsylvania, was started in June 1965 with battery- powered tractor-trailer face haulage. The area as- signed to Portal No. 3 encompasses over 8000 acres of coal and will be developed by driving a set of main entries through the center of the tract in roughly a westerly direction, and sub mains on a 45º deflection angle in roughly a northerly direction (Figs 1 & 2). In the original planning these sub mains were to be at a 90º angle with the mains, but difficult roof conditions necessitated a change in plans. The entries and crosscuts are driven 18 ft wide in the normal Sewickley seam which varies between 46 and 56 in. high. The mine bottom is a strong shale and in average, cool or dry outside conditions stands up well for rubber-tired haulage equipment, but when the outside conditions are hot and humid, the bottom becomes soft and muddy. This condition lessens as the mine faces are advanced further from the portals because the condensation will then take place principally on the surfaces of intake entries outby the working areas. To aid the situation, an air cooling system was installed and is used as conditions dictate.

ONE of the most important contributions to the art of electrolytic zinc production-has been the aluminum cathode. This has been used in all major production: since its commercial development in 1916. The literature is replete with important contributions, some of which may have been replaced by better ones, but thus far there appears no other metal to take the place of aluminum as cathode material. Credit for this innovation goes to Sherard Cowper Coles, of England. When experi-menting on the extraction of-zinc from Broken Hill ore at Hayle, Cornwall, in 1893, he introduced the aluminum cathode, and in 1895 obtained British Patent-No. 20073. The reason for this dominant position of aluminum as cathode mate-rial in zinc sulphate electrolytes is its unique surface, to which electro-deposited metals usually do not tightly adhere. The metal must be of high purity for best results. It is possible to develop a starting-sheet method by which thin electro-deposited sheets of cathode zinc are made and stripped from a smooth aluminum plate. Such thin sheets of cathode zinc may be used as arc tine copper sheets in standard electrolytic copper-refinery practice. However, complications arise because of extreme warping of the zinc starting sheet after a .few hours of deposition, and thus special arrangements must be made to compensate for this abnormality.

THE education of adolescents to perform the duties and assume the responsibilities of maturity has been a characteristic of human society since the dawn of history. In the beginning the members of the immediate family performed this function, and in modern life they still have an important part in it. Possibly religion was the first field in which education began to be functional; young people were sent for instruction to a teacher who had a broader and deeper knowledge of the subject than was possessed by the family. It does not seem necessary for our purpose to attempt to determine how, when, or where instruction in the practical arts first began to become functional, and the brief outline which follows must suffice. The discovery and utilization of mineral substances to improve and maintain the conditions of human living is a practical art, which must have had an almost accidental origin and have been developed by empirical experiments. We do not know, nor would it be useful to try to fancy, how men first learned that they could make use of mineral substances to their benefit, but however that knowledge was initially gained it was certainly trans- mitted through instruction in the family. At fist such activities must have been merely a minor part of the making of a living, bit in time those who excelled found it better to devote them-

In 1978, Anschutz Mining Corp. began efforts to develop the Madison Cobalt Project in southeast Missouri. Preliminary metallurgical studies indicated that intermediate grade cobalt products, suitable for shipment to existing refineries, could be recovered from the sulfide mineralization of the ore body. However, tolling and freight charges were significant, as the refineries were located outside the US. These refineries would not satisfy the goal of strategically insulated production of superalloy-grade cobalt. The acquisition of proven, readily available refinery technologies was then evaluated. However, licensing costs were substantial and the "proven" technologies were not directly applicable to the unique chemistry of Madison materials. Faced with these challenges, Anschutz, in conjunction with the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute, embarked on an effort to develop a sulfate-based separation and refining process. CSMRI performed bench-scale and continuous pilot experiments on solutions generated through other pilot campaigns conducted by Lurgi, Hazen Research, and Sherritt Gordon. The results indicated that cobalt could be selectively extracted from sulfate media using a new generation of organophosphates. The solvent extraction system produced a solution suitable for electrolysis of high-purity cobalt. Preliminary cost studies indicated the novel process was competitive with other refinery systems. Plans to develop the detailed engineering-design information required to commercialize the process were abandoned when the price of cobalt collapsed to less than $17.64/kg ($8.00 per lb).

CANDY,* Pittsburgh, Pa.-According to the tables on page 532, the deposit obtained with Roebling cold-rolled steel, and Toucan electrodes contained considerably less carbon and manganese than the original electrodes; whereas very little carbon is lost in the case of the hot-rolled steel electrode. When using the hot-rolled steel electrodes, the metal apparently has a tendency, probably due to greater surface tension, to pass through the arc in larger particles than the other electrode materials. This affords greater protection against oxidation, and thereby prevents much loss of carbon. The larger globules tend to increase the arc fluctuations due to greater partial short-circuiting of the arc. Actual oscillographic records show that with the hot-rolled steel electrodes the current peaks were 70 per cent. above normal whereas the peaks for the other electrodes were only about 25 per cent. -above normal. Probably due to the larger globules, a greater proportion of slag in the electrode was carried into the weld. Some four or five test pieces made with the hot-rolled steel electrodes were all considerably below the tensile strength of the samples welded with the other electrodes. These facts indicate that an electrode may not be satisfactory even though of approximately the proper chemical composition. For example; the hot-rolled steel and Roebling electrodes are quite similar in chemical analysis.

The magnetic concentration of iron-ores has been so often and so widely studied and discussed among the members of the Institute that any remarks concerning its general importance, from an economic standpoint, would be superfluous; but it is thought that a description of the Ball and Norton ore-separator, designed for cobbing and separating magnetic iron-ores, indicating its essential differences from other machines and the advantages claimed for it, together with some account of recent results obtained in its application to the concentration of such ores, will prove of interest. This machine is the joint invention of Mr. Sheldon Norton, of Hokendauqua, Pa., and the writer, and has been patented in the United States, Canada, and other countries. Of the accompanying illustrations, Pig. 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of the perfected ore-separator, adapted for separating fine ore, and Fig. 2 the same, adapted for cobbing ore of the size of stove- or chestnut-coal. The two designs are identical in principle, and vary from each other in minor details only. INTRODUCTION The Friedensville mine is situated in Upper Saucon Township, Le- high County, Pennsylvania, in the southern central part of the Allentown quadrangle of the United States Geological Survey, approximately 5 miles southeast of the City of Allentown and 4 miles south of the City of Bethlehem. Zinc was first discovered in the Friedensville area early in the 19th century and several mines were operating during the latter part of the century. Zinc oxide was produced in 1853 and zinc metal in 1859. All mining in the area ceased in 1893 chiefly because of an unfavorable economic situation caused by a severe ground water problem and competition from the higher grade ores in New Jersey. Property acquisition by the New Jersey Zinc Company began in 1899 and periodic exploratory drilling was carried on until 1940 when sufficient reserves were proved for development of a mine. Shaft sinking was undertaken in 1947 and, due to severe hydrologic conditions, was not completed until 1952. Production began in 1958 and today the mine is producing about 64,000 tons of zinc concentrate per annum. The concentrates are trucked to the Company's smelter at Palmerton, Pennsylvania, approximately 30 miles north of Friedensville. The mine also produces from its mill tailings industrial and agricultural grades of limestone for commercial markets.

It is appropriate to the place of meeting, and of interest to those members of the Institute whose attention has been more or less directed to Virginia during the past eleven years, to know the result of recent developments of the Virginia coal-field. While, during the late " boom," the attention of the industrial pioneers of Virginia was mainly directed to iron-ore deposits and manufacture, it is safe to say that the coal to which, at that time, comparatively little attention was turned, and which did not directly foster a growth of " boom " towns, will prove the most reliable source of mineral wealth in the State. At the time of the last Virginia meeting of the Institute, held at Roanoke, in 1883, the Wise county coal-field was untouched by a railroad, and its economic existence was scarcely considered. Although, in the meantime, a number of reconnaissances had been made, and a fair estimate of the value of the field formed, it was not until 1891, when the Norfolk and Western and the Louisville and Nashville railroads, respectively, completed their Clinch Valley and Norton extensions to a junction at Norton, Wise county, that any development took place, and not until 1892 were shipments of any importance made. The process parameters for effective utilization of nitric acid as an oxidant for copper-iron sulfides have been developed. Leaching variables found to be important were acid concentration, temperature, time, atmosphere, pressure, mineral type, particle size, and percent solids. Particular attention was devoted to analysis and control of fumes evolving during the oxidation. Data were recorded on metal extraction, elemental sulfur formation and oxidation, product gas composition and evolution rate, reagent consumption, and residue flotation response. The study was concluded by laboratory testing a flowsheet based on the foregoing observations. Ninety-eight percent of the copper contained in a chalcopyrite-bornite concentrate was recovered, requiring 1.6 lb of nitric acid to be regenerated externally per pound of copper extracted. Iron remained in the leach residue as hydrogen jarosite and was ultimately rejected from the system by froth flotation. Sixty percent of the sulfur contained in the copper concentrate reported in the elemental form; the remainder was oxidized to sulfate and eliminated with the hydrogen jarosite in the flotation tails or by neutralization of the solvent extraction raffinate with lime. Nitrogen was evolved primarily as NO and NOD; up to 3% N2O also was present. Gases containing sulfur were absent except when pyrrhotite was solubilized in the absence of soluble copper. In this case, HAS was evolved.

PECIMEN preparation for electron metallography involves several steps, such as polishing, etching, replicating, mounting, and shadowing. Although each step must be done with care, the operation requiring the utmost attention is etching. Proper etching is important because the relief pattern developed on the surface of the specimen by the etchant, and reproduced as minute differences in thickness of the replica, determines entirely the amount of detail seen in the final micrograph. The characteristic colored stains, sometimes used in light metallography to simplify identification of certain microconstituents, cannot be tolerated because there is danger of introducing artifacts in the replicating operation. It is also quite difficult to remove plastic replicas from stained specimens. A suitable etchant for electron metallography must, therefore, in all cases exhibit a preferential attack upon each of the microconstituents present sufficient to result in a difference in surface elevation. When only two microconstituents are present, it is not too difficult to find a suitable etchant since their physical or chemical properties are generally sufficiently different to result in a marked difference in attack by the etchant. For example, picral (a saturated solution of picric acid in methanol used as an immersion etch) is a satisfactory etchant for the specimen shown in Fig. 1 consisting of iron carbide particles embedded in a ferrite matrix.'

LITTLE study has been made of the pressure changes and energy losses that take place when an air current is divided into splits which subse-quently unite. The discussion and the experiments that are described in this paper deal with the division of an air current into square splits of equal size, the area of each of the splits at the downstream junction being one-half the area of the main duct. APPARATUS AND SYMBOLS The duct system shown in Fig. 1 was built of Y4-in. redwood and made as smooth as possible.The section of the top over the splits and the zone of mixing was of plate glass to permit observation of the stream lines. Measurements of rates of flow were .made by determining the drop in pressure through concentric square orifices in the splits. The air was supplied by a fan operated by a direct-current motor that received its current from a motor generator set. Delicate rheostats in the armature. of the motor. made possible the perfect control of the fan speed, which was indicated on an electrical tachometer. Vanes to straighten the. flow were placed at the head of the main duct.
