In coal preparation plants, as in many industrial operations where raw materials are handled, nuisance, health, and equipment maintenance problems arising from the generation of dust are inevitable. Devices for the control or collection of dust are therefore essential components of the plant process equipment. The objective of a dust collector is to separate solid particles from a gas stream in which they are suspended. Various types of devices can be employed to accomplish this end. The choice of the type of collecting device for a given application depends on principles of the behavior of fine particles and on factors associated with the properties of the dust (such as particle size, density, shape) and the suspending medium (such as density, humidity, viscosity, velocity). Particles suspended in a gas stream are acted upon by a number of forces including the buoyant force and frictional resistance of the suspending medium, which tend to keep the particles in suspension, and the force of gravity which tends to impart a relative motion between the particles and the fluid. The smaller the particle the greater the tendency for it to remain in suspension and, thus, the more difficult it becomes to collect the particle, or separate it from the fluid stream. To effect separation, therefore, some external force must be applied on the dust particle. When dust particles in a gas stream are acted upon by an external force, for example, gravity, centrifugal force, or an electrostatic field, the particles will be accelerated in the direction induced by the force. Because of a relative motion between the particles and the gas stream, a frictional resistance will be set up that will limit the velocity of the particle toward the force. To effect collection of the particles, this velocity must be great enough that the particles are trapped by some collection medium before the gas can transport the particles out of the collecting equipment. The most common physical mechanisms employed by collecting devices include gravity, inertial or centrifugal force, impingement, and electrostatic fields.

INTERESTING results were recently obtained in geophysical prospecting at the Questa mine of the Molybdenum Corpn. of America in New Mexico. This paper describes that survey, which was carried out during October and November, 1927, by the Swedish American Prospecting Corpn. It is hoped that the paper will make it possible for the mining man to form an opinion of the applicability of geophysical prospecting under difficult conditions, showing, as it does, the results when prospecting for small small orebodies with comparatively poor conductivity, in a region of rough topography. Some principles underlying electromagnetic prospecting not known to be published previously will also be given in an elementary way, with special attention to the general structure of the electromagnetic field. GEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS AT QUESTA The property is situated in the Taos range of the Rocky Mountains in northern New Mexico. About this region, L. C. Graton says:1 The main range is made up of pre-Cambrian granites, gneisses and schists but in the vicinity of Red River igneous rocks of later age are present almost to the exclusion of the older series. These younger rocks are divisible into two groups. The older of the two, probably pre-Tertiary age, is represented by large intrusive masses of monzonite porphyry, usually containing considerable quartz. The more recent group comprises intrusive' and probably effusive dark-colored andesites and coarse andesitic breccias, some of which contain fragments of the monzonite; there are also flows of rhyolite and beds of rhyolite breccia. The evidence regarding the relative age of the andesite and the rhyolite is not wholly satisfactory, but there is little doubt that the andesite is the older. The ore deposits, although occurring more commonly in the monzonite porphyry than in the rhyolite, nevertheless are believed to be genetically related to the rhyolite. They certainly cut the rhyolite or andesite in places, and hence fall in the late Tertiary.

Of the various reagents employed in the flotation of zinc-bearing ores none have attained the wide popularity that is enjoyed at present by xanthates, copper sulfate and cyanides. This situation suggests the existence of an unusual dependence in the reactions of these chemicals and of sphalerite. A study of the flotative characteristics of sphalerite when using xanthates as collectors, as related to the chemical properties of copper salts and cyanides, has therefore been conducted at the University of Utah by the writer and his associates1 during the period of 1926 to 1929. In perusing the technical literature concerning the flotation of zinc ores and of zinc-bearing lead and copper ores, a striking and general lack of agreement as to the floatability of sphalerite was observed. The underlying cause for the erratic behavior of sphalerite has not been definitely ascertained but the presence in various proportions of iron sulfide in solid solution in the sphalerite has frequently been implicitly regarded as a major factor in this respect. Although the effect of iron sulfide in solid solution in sphalerite has not been investigated in relation to the behavior of sphalerite in flotation, it is likely that it is not as important a factor as was thought at one time. The variable float-ability of sphalerite has led to the use of fairly large amounts of cyanide to prevent its flotation in the case of certain ores, whereas mere fractions of that amount of cyanide, or even none at all, have been sufficient to achieve the same result for other ores2 Similarly, the amount of copper sulfate used to promote the flotation of sphalerite has been found to vary widely. The Phosphate Recovery Corporation operates three flotation plants, NOS. 1 and 2 concentrators about three miles northeast of Mulberry, Florida, and No. 3 plant at Wales, Tennessee. These plants represent the first commercial phosphate flotation operation and are also believed to be the largest nonmetallic flotation operation in the world at the present time. The details of this paper will be confined to plant No. 2, this being the newest and largest concentrator in Florida, and the flow sheet being practically the same as at plant No. 1. The No. 3 plant has been operated but a short time and has been shut down since December, 1932, on account of the decrease in phosphate rock production. The phosphate washers usually are located centrally on a known deposit so that about two hundred acres of ground can be mined economically to each washer location. The washers are moved to new areas when the distance becomes too great for economical pumping. The flotation plants are built either adjacent to a washer, so that current debris may be utilized, or on the site of a former washer where there is sufficient accumulated debris available for mining, and the flotation plants must also be moved from time to time. Most of the water used in the Florida flotation plants is recovered after passing through a circulating system where most of the fine SUSpended matter is settled out, but some make-up water is obtained from deep wells near the plant. Power is obtained from the Tampa Electric Co. through the distribution facilities of the International Agricultural Corporation. Flotation concentrate is hauled from the plant by trolley over the International Agricultural Corporation's trolley system, to the drying plant at Prairie, one mile northwest of Mulberry. THE Sunrise iron mine of The Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation is in Platte County, Wyoming, about 110 miles north of Cheyenne. It is served by the company-owned Colorado and Wyoming Railway, which connects with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and the Colorado and Southern railways at Guernsey, Wyoming, a distance of 6 miles from the mine. The original Sunrise claims were staked mainly by United States Army officers and soldiers stationed at old Fort Laramie, because of small showings of copper in the Carboniferous limestones that form a horizontal capping overlying the Huronian iron ore. A small copper smelter was operated for about three years at Fairbanks, now an abandoned town on the North Platte River. As many of the copper shafts and test pits near the present Sunrise mine were deepened, they penetrated the capping and encountered iron ore or gray sericitic schist, and were abandoned. Evidence of an early interest in iron ore was found when the Chicago claim was stripped for mining. A narrow, winding crevice was discovered, which led downward 20 ft. through the capping to the underlying soft red hematite, in which a room 10 by 14 by 7 ft. had been excavated. Stone hammers and wedges and a few rusted pieces of iron were found on the floor, and the evidence is conclusive that the excavation was used up to rather recent times by Sioux Indian medicine men, to provide war paint. GEOLOGY AND ORE The Sunrise district is in the Hartville uplift, an anticlinal area in which pre-Cambrian rocks similar to those of the Black Hills and the Laramie Mountains are brought to the surface. The lowest part of the pre-Cambrian series exposed is a great thickness of pink, crystalline, Huronian dolomites with thin unstratified beds of schist and quartzite. FOR more than 2500 years, natural gas issues in the Surakhany district of the Apsheron peninsula were the object of pilgrimages by fire worshippers and Hindoos from Burma and India. Even as late as 1890, Hindoo priests conducted ceremonies in a temple at Surakhany, which probably replaced a more ancient one; but later, the visits of the pilgrims were prohibited in order to check the spread of Asiatic diseases in that region. For centuries, limited supplies of oil have been abstracted from shallow excavations in the Caspian oil belt and dispatched into the interior of Asia and elsewhere for medicinal and industrial purposes. Statistics show a yield of 37,400 bbl. in 1863, but only since 1869 has there been serious development; in that year the yield was 203,000 bbl. At that time, hand digging was supplanted by drilling, and the enormous wells that resulted from tapping sources hitherto beyond the reach of operators completely demoralized the industry for a time, owing to inadequate outlets for the products. The early activities in this area were greatly hindered by annoying taxation, monopolies, imperial land grants, etc., but when these were revoked or adjusted, in 1877, the industry sprang into prominence and, between 1898 and 1901, the Baku fields produced practically one-half of the world's supply of oil. Within a few miles of Baku lie the two richest oil fields in the world; viz., the Balakhany-Saboontchy-Romany and the Bibi-Eibat, the latter constituting almost a suburb of the city. For many years the gasoline obtained in the refineries of the Baku area was burned in pits, being considered an undesirable product, and until 1870 the residue also was destroyed, its value as a fuel not being recognized. Kerosene was the main product sought by the refiners. It was shipped across the Caspian Sea and up the Volga to the industrial centers of Russia. The sinking of a new shaft at the Newport mine, Ironwood, Mich., was started in May 1931 and completed on Aug. 3, 1932. During this period, 2665 ft. of shaft in granite was completed, at an average advance of 6 ft. per 24 hr. In Novernber of 1930, experimental work was conducted on 65 ft. of shaft through 22 ft. of overburden where ledge was encountered, and this work convinced the operators that all drilling could be done with vertical holes with the blasting relief to a 4½-in. hole drilled vertically in the center of the cut. The reason for not adopting the conventional V-cut was to get away from damaging the shaft steel. The blasting in a V-cut naturally tends to throw the broken material upward, but with the cut as adopted the relief was in a horizontal direction to a large extent. The scheme of mucking employed made it necessary to keep the steel shaft sets within 50 ft. of the bottom at all times. This could not be done without serious damage with a V-cut when blasting in granite. The cut as drilled also broke 10.83 ft. per round of drilling, which was considerably more than the experience with a V-cut in the same material. The extended cut reduced proportionately the delays for charging, blowing smoke and handling drilling equipment in the shaft. Another advantage was the ease in drilling vertical over inclined holes, and the preservation of the proper spacing of the drill holes at the bottom of the cut. Drilling Air was carried down the shaft in an 8-in. flanged pipe line at a pressure ranging from 95 to 100 Ib. This line was extended to within 100 ft. of the bottom, where a valve and a 4 by 4 by 6-ft. tee was connected to it. In the study of reactions occurring in liquid iron, alone or in contact with a liquid oxide or slag phase, it has been found that the experimental data over a limited range of concentration can in some cases be represented satisfactorily by the simple equilibrium expression where (P) denotes the concentration of a product and (R) the concentration of a reactant in the reaction r1R1 + r2R2 + • • • D P lP1 + P 2P2 + • • • Some of the reactions for which it holds are listed in Table 1. For others, however, the simple equation apparently does not hold. This has been attributed to an improper method of expressing concentration (for instance, weight per cent instead of mol fraction); or it has been supposed that the solutions are not ideal in the sense that the activity of a component is not proportional to its true mol fraction. But it may be that the problem has been oversimplified by neglecting some molecular species actually present; that is, by considering only the ostensible simple components and thus leaving out of account possible compound formation. It is the purpose of the present paper to point out how, in a group of related cases, a reasonable consistent assumption relative to the presence of a compound makes it possible to express the experimental data satisfactorily by the simple equilibrium expression when this compound is taken into account, and to bring into harmony data referring to different reactions in liquid iron. There are several a priori reasons for believing that solutions in liquid iron should not deviate far from ideality, provided that the concentration of solute is not too great and is expressed in proper terms. The factors that commonly lead to nonideality in systems at ordinary temperature— as ionization or the occurrence of polar and nonpolar molecules—are presumably less effective in inetal and in slag systems at high temperature. Many writers, in discussing defects caused by oxidation and gassing of bronzes and red brasses advocate substantially the same cure for both. But from its nature, oxidation cannot take place if there is an excess of fuel in the furnace, while the gases absorbed by some alloys are products of incomplete combustion of the fuel. Hence the metal can be either oxidized or gassed, but it is doubtful whether these actions can take place simultaneously. Oxidation can be easily overcome by the use of deosidizers or it may be avoided by protecting the molten metal with suitable fluxes. Absorption of gascs is more difficult to overcome: the regulation of the air and fuel, so as to produce complete combustion, and the protection of the bath by mineral fluxes arc the most important factors. Gas expulsion, resulting in gas holes, porosity, unsoundness, and swollen or cauliflower-headed risers, is said to have several causes. One writer1 lists the most common causes in the order of their importance, as follows: Superheated metal, dirty or slaggy furnace conditions, using metals low in quality or those previously subjected to bad melting practice, poor grade of fuel, use of newly lined or damp ladles, indiscriminate mixing of scrap or illogical combinations of metal. Superheating the metal usually occurs when the heat is ready to be poured but for some reason must be held in the furnace. In this case, a careful furnace tender tries to avoid overheating the metal by keeping a mild fire; that is, a reducing fire which, unfortunately, results in gassing the metal. A dirty, slaggy furnace may result in gassing the metal by retarding the heating and prolonging the time necessary to bring the metal to the proper temperature, thereby increasing the chances of gassing in uncertain furnace atmosphere. Common salt is mentioned in the most ancient writings as an important article of diet. It is fairly certain that it was used by men and animals long before the dawn of civilization. Its presence in natural springs has often been the determining factor in colonization; wars have been fought for possession of salt deposits; trade routes have been established expressly for the purpose of traffic in salt. Naturally this led men into adventures and discoveries that altered history and advanced civilization. In the early days the uses for salt were few and the methods of manufacture were crude and the purity low when compared to salt of the present day. Then the salt came largely from springs, shallow wells or the ocean, while today deep wells must be drilled to the natural brines or beds of rock salt and spacious shafts sunk so that the ancient deposits may be made to yield their supply of stored mineral. Mining and Purification The quantity of available salt seems inexhaustible. It occurs in practically every country of the globe. About 20 million tons is produced and consumed annually in the world. Of this amount about 7 million tons is produced in the United States; 13/4 million tons of rock salt, 2 1/4 million tons as evaporated salt and 31/2 million tons in brine used in the chemical industry. Mined rock salt is used in its natural state without purification. It is classified for the trade by crushing and screening. The average purity of rock salt mined in the United States is about 98.3 per cent pure sodium chloride1. The usual impurities are gypsiferous shale, anhydrite and silica, with traces of potassium, magnesium and calcium compounds. Refined or evaporated salt is made by crystallizing the salt from brine in open pans or vacuum pans. A comparatively small amount of salt is made from ocean water or the brines of inland lakes or seas, sometimes by solar evaporation. By far the larger amount of brine is obtained by drill-

Sodium sulfide is used extensively to increase the recovery of oxidized copper and lead minerals by flotation, particularly when using xanthates as collectors. It is generally assumed that the sodium sulfide converts a film of the oxidized mineral to the sulfide, and that the xanthate, while not a very effective collector for the oxidized minerals, is a good collector for the sulfide. On the other hand, Taggart and his collaborators1 claim that unless sulfide minerals are oxidized they cannot adsorb xanthates and do not float. Gaudin2 states that amyl xanthate, used in conjunction with sodium sulfide, gives better results than ethyl xanthate. Rabone3 and Mayer-Schranz4 agree that excess of sulfide functions as a depressant. Owing to the greater solubilities of the oxidized minerals than of the sulfides, the consumption of sodium sulfide is greater than that of most other flotation reagents, up to 10 lb. per ton of ore being used in some plants. Luyken and Bierbrauer5 recommend a water washing to remove soluble heavy metal salts; by this means sulfide consumption may be reduced. It was desirable to determine the limits of the sulfide concentrations between which contact is possible at surfaces of anglesite and cerussite in xanthate solutions. Similar determinations were desirable for the sulfide minerals with which the oxidized minerals are usually associated, since conditions should be chosen, if possible, so that the two types of mineral will float together. Because of the formation, especially in acid solutions, of hydrogen sulfide and of the hydrosulfide ion (HS-), the permissible limits of sulfide addition are obviously dependent upon the pH value. Sphalerite responds to ethyl xanthate only in the presence of an activator; for example, copper sulfate. It was necessary, therefore, to determine whether sodium sulfide interferes with the activation of sphalerite by copper sulfate. The combined effect of sulfide and copper sulfate was determined also for galena, chalcopyrite and pyrite.

Magnetic torque studies of ferromagnetic single crystals have been carried out in a number of laboratories during the last decade&apos;s2 and some work has been reported on polycrystalline material showing preferred orientation. Goss3 used the method extensively in developing electrical sheet with desirable magnetic properties, but he used it as a control rather than as a means of studying the texture. Bozorth4 made a quantitative correlation of a torque curve he obtained from some cold-rolled iron with the texture as determined from X-rays, but did not extend his studies beyond the one specimen. Other studies, which have been reported from time to time2,5 have also been incomplete in the sense that no effort was made to study a whole series of samples, differing only in degree of cold reduction or in the annealing temperature, in order to ascertain the effect of such treatments on the texture as revealed by torque measurements. It is the purpose of this investigation to make such a study, mainly in order to see how useful the method can be made when used under favorable circumstances and to find what kind of a correlation can be expected between magnetic and X-ray studies of texture. Before proceeding further, it is desirable to say a little about single crystals, so as to make clear the concepts involved in magnetic torque measurements. Magnetic Torque Method It is fairly well known nowadays that single crystals of ferromagnetic substances have directions of easy magnetization and of hard magnetization. In Fig. 1 are reproduced typical magnetization curves for a single crystal of iron, which show that in a < 100 > direction saturation occurs at low fields compared to those required to saturate the same crystal in a <110> or a <111> direction. In recent years, the damping capacity of metals has come to be recognized as an important index of certain types of structural change. In a number of instances, this property has proved to be particularly sensitive, but insufficient work has been done to permit a general interpretation. There is considerable question at the present time as to just what factors are responsible for the internal dissipation of energy when a metal is carried through a cycle of stress, and these factors must be ascertained if the value of the damping method as a metallurgical tool is to be determined. Since internal stresses are among the chief causes of dissipation of internal energy, or damping capacity, it was thought that a study of the changes in damping during the recovery and recrystalliza-tion of a cold-worked metal might throw some light upon the subject, particularly if the damping changes were correlated with other properties that are better understood. Probably more work has been done on the recrystallization phenomena of alpha brass than on any other metal, so this was chosen as the material for the present investigation. Damping measurements on brass have been made by Förster and Köster.1 They showed that the annealing of a brass that had been cold-drawn to 50 per cent reduction produced a rapid fall in the damping, a flat minimum occurring at approximately the temperature of recrystallization. The damping remained at a low value until grain growth was well under way and then it increased rapidly with increasing grain size. Köster and Rosenthal2 continued the work in greater detail. They pointed out that the damping decrease does not correspond to the hardness drop but occurs at a lower temperature, suggesting that the relief or redistribution of internal stresses has a large effect while the actual recrystallization effect is small. They also show the increase in damping at the higher annealing temperatures. Their curves are reproduced in Fig. 1.

The purpose of this paper is to present briefly a description of some of the special methods of separation or concentration, either singly or in combination with others, and to give certain operating data and examples. Explanation of the usual methods of large-production mill treatment, such as flotation or wet tabling, or of chemically treating industrial minerals, is not included in the scope of this paper, although one of these methods might be, in certain instances, augmented by one or more of the special methods that will be enumerated herein. Description of these special methods will be centered on magnetic separators, electrostatic separators and air flotation or air tables. Magnetic Sepaeatohs In general, separation is achieved by exerting upon a particle some kind of force opposed to gravity, either directly or at an angle. For example, in the Wetherill or cross-belt type of magnetic separator some particles are lifted vertically from the others because they have been exposed to a force to which they respond more readily than particles of lesser magnetic susceptibility. Of course, there is a limitation to this vertical rise, for the particle must be of a high enough susceptibility to receive a magnetic force greater than the 980 dynes per gram of gravitational urge. To overcome this limitation, the induction type of magnetic separator was developed, so that it is only necessary to instill, say, 30 to 60 dynes per gram instead of the 080, to cause a deflection away from the vertical in falling, and that deflection can be used advantageously when falling by inserting a dividing knife-edge. The induction magnetic separator (Fig. 1) has become a fairly well known method of concentrating and purifying. For example, abrasive grain was among the materials that did not respond to the previously best known type of magnetic separator, such as the Wetherill type, and the development of the induction magnetic separator in the plant of a

The conditions affecting the supply of casinghead gas, the different degrees of productivity, the difficulty of determining the quantities utilized, and the evaluation of the gas in casinghead-gasoline units and related data, having an economic bearing on the industry as a whole, are important questions and offer an interesting field for study. Casinghead-gas data have been gathered in some of the oil fields of Oklahoma where testing work has been done regularly and the volumes of casinghead gas were available. The area covered embraces 219 scattered leases in 29 townships, with a total of 18,039 acres and 1921 wells. The accompanying table gives specific locations of the areas under consideration, number of leases, range depth of wells, average age of production, sand depths and oil production data. The results of this investigation are set forth in the accompanying charts, showing volumes of casinghead gas in 6-month periods from Jan. 1, 1918, to June 30, 1921, when full record was available, production of casinghead gasoline, average productivity of the gas in gallons per thousand cubic feet, average price of the gas and the market price of the casinghead gasoline. The cases enumerated in the table and the data shown in the graphs do not represent the greater part of oil or casinghead gas production from any one township, nor are the leases contiguous. The properties in each township, however, may be considered as typical of general conditions, such as the date of completion of wells, depth, character, and thickness of oil sand, time of pumping, present oil production, Vacuum carried on wells, and usual operating practices. It was deemed advisable to subdivide the time into 6-mo. periods, as it was impracticable to make the tests more frequently, furthermore 6 mo. is probably the minimum period within which there would occur a noticeable increase in the productivity of the gas. It must be remembered that the figures on volumes are subject to the usual irregularities and relative inaccuracies of meter measurenlents of gas under varying degrees

LEDOUX).-If there ever was a question in the mind of anybody as to whether there are some mining engineers, I think if they would look in the door tonight they would decide there are. We meet here tonight not only to enjoy a smoke and other incidentals which are permitted us in these days, but with a more serious thought in our minds, because that flag, with its 540 stars, only begins to show the number of our membership that are serving the country. We are thinking of them, and when we consider how many of those men are also citizens of one or another of our allied countries, we can imagine that many are tonight thinking of us and perhaps have received, even at the front, notices of our annual meeting and are wondering what we are doing tonight; so our thought this evening will be going out to them, going out to those of our number who are serving in the khaki or in the blue, or in other activities denied to some of us for one reason or another; but, gentlemen, there is one thing we will do now, we will rise and sing together r the Star Spangled Banner. Gentlemen, not only are American citizens here tonight, not only representatives of our country on the Speakers&apos; platform, but. there are representatives of our Allies, and we are going to have the privilege of listening to one or two of the latter, a citizen of the great British Empire and a citizen of France. He has been loaned to us to take charge of training Columbia University students, after two years or more in the trenches, and lie carries with him the only German thing in this room, a German bullet in his shoulder. Once it was believed that anthracite or coke were the only fuels generally available and suitable for the generation of water gas, particularly so when this gas was made in the generators of standard carburetted water-gas sets such as are commonly used in the manufacture of city gas. During the past 8 years, practice has changed considerably and it is now common to find gas plants operating without anthracite or coke and using bituminous coal in the generator. This change in fuel has appreciably increased the marketability and sales of certain coal producers&apos; products; accordingly it is of interest to coal operators and others to know the reason for this change, the present trend in practice and the adaptability of various coals for generation of water gas. This paper briefly discusses these conditions and some of the factors relating thereto. Bituminous Coal not Ideal but Cheaper than Coke In spite of many changes which have been made in both process and generating apparatus for using bituminous coal as generator fuel more efficiently, in general it is not an ideal fuel for this purpose. It is supplanting coke because it costs less; it is so much cheaper per ton delivered at the gas works that water gas made therefrom costs less per unit-volume than that made from coke, even though the quantity of generator fuel consumed per therm (100,000 B. t. u.) of gas made is greater with coal. This is the reason why so many city gas plants, as well as others, are using bituminous coal instead of coke. Conditions Favoring Change from Coke to Coal The conditions which have made it possible and feasible, as well as economical, to supplant coke with coal may be summarized as follows: (1) Changes in methods of operating and alteration in generating apparatus; (2) lowering of the calorific standards for city gas, and (3) availability

In 1888, Howard,1&apos; working at the Watertown Arsenal on the tensile properties of ferrous materials at various temperatures, noted the curious fact that the stress-strain diagrams of low-carbon steels tested within a certain temperature range (200" to 350" C.) departed more or less from the normal regularity of such diagrams as secured by testing at either above or below these temperatures. This same jagged appearance of similar diagrams for steels has been observed by at least one other investigator, and de Forest2 has reported similar irregularities in the tensile testing of some nonferrous alloys. Recently again, this anomaly in diagram contour has been shown in a most striking fashion, apparently because of its accentuation by the method of testing employed, by Dr. Albert Sauveur.~ He described (for nonaustenitie steels) two quite distinct types of torsional stress-time diagrams: (1) those with a regular and smooth outline, derived normally by testing at temperatures above 300" C., or below 200" C. (as, for example, Figs. 4a or e); and (2) those presenting a decided "stepped" appearance, which are invariably produced when twisting is done within the 200" to 300" C. range (examples, Figs. 5a and b). The torsion test brings out so much more sharply (and convincingly) the irregularities occurring at 200&apos; and 300" C. than does the tensile test that they can no longer be considered as resulting from simply idiosyncratic or accidental and inconsequential causes. Clearly, from the temperatures involved, the "stepped" type of diagram, or more accurately, the peculiar manner of response to torsional stress which manifests itself in the diagram, is an aspect of the "blue-heat" phenomenon. One&apos;s curiosity, if nothing else, prompts an inquiry as to the nature and significance of these "steps." What do they mean? What causes them To these questions there are no completely satisfactory answers. The following experimental observations are offered as suggestions towards the solution of the problem.

The mines of the Arizona Copper Co. are situated in the Morenci-Metcalf copper district in southeastern Arizona. This copper-bearing district covers a triangular mountainous area of about 3 square miles, rising abruptly from the gravel plateau of the surrounding country. In this area, an immense intrusion of porphyry lias displaced, shattered, and engulfed the shales, limestones, and quartzites formerly bedded on the basal granite. Outcrops of oxide ore were discovered in 1873, and these surface ores were found to connect in depth with large bodies of high-grade oxide ores in the limestones and shales. The mining of these high-grade ores continued until about 1893, when their rapid exhaustion led to the discovery and exploitation of the low-grade sulphide ores in the adjoining porphyry. Methods of concentration were then devised and the low-grade ores finally rendered profitable. The Arizona Copper Co. and the Detroit Copper Mining Co., operating in the same district, were the pioneers in the successful development of the low-grade "porphyry" properties of to-day. The largest mines of the Arizona Copper Co. are the Humboldt and Clay at Morenci, and the Coronado, Metcalf, and King at Metcalf. These mines produce about 4,000 tons daily of concentrating ore containing from 2.5 to 2.8 per cent. copper. The topography of the country is very rugged and mining operations are conducted principally through adit levels. A few of the mines are opened by shafts, the deepest being 1,100 ft., in the Coronado mine. Ore Occurrence The low-grade sulphide ore occurs as: (1) disseminated deposits in the main stock of quartz porphyry; (2) lode deposits in fault fissures in granite. The high-grade oxide ores were found as tabular deposits in limestone and shale close to contacts with porphyry dikes. Low-grade oxide ore formed the outcrop of some of the sulphide orebodies; the majority of the outcrops, however, were barren.

The electrolytic refining of metals for the removal of undesirable impurities has become a recognized necessity in the nonferrous field. Copper, lead, zinc, nickel, silver and gold have been produced in this manner for years. The United States Metals Refining Co., realizing that considerable quantities of lead and tin could be made available to the trade if a satisfactory method of purification of these metals could be established, decided to investigate the possibilities of electrolytic solder. In cooperation with Dr. Edward F. Kern, of the School of Mines at Columbia University, the company developed a process of electrolytic refining of lead-tin alloys using a tin-lead fluosilicate electrolyte. A pilot plant was installed in November 1927, and the commercial unit was put in October 1929. Since that time thousands of tons of electrolytic solder have been produced in this plant and consumed by all branches of industry that use solder. Older Methods of Producing Solder In the early days practically all solder was made by melting together virgin lead and tin in the proper proportions to meet specifications; then the solder was cast into the commercial shapes required. Today the base of most solders comes from scrap or secondary materials. Ordinarily solder is produced from secondary materials either by sweating solder-bearing scrap or by smelting lead and tin-bearing drosses, residues and similar materials. When solder is produced from scrap by sweating, clear solder is collected directly. It is then given some kind of kettle refining and usually blended to specification with virgin metals before it is cast into finished shapes. In producing solder from drosses and residues, the materials are usually first given a reducing smelting treatment from which a crude solder is obtained. This crude solder may be refined in several ways, but usually the first step is a furnace liquation to remove the bulk of the copper, which is followed by one of the more or less complicated methods for the removal of antimony and other impurities.
