Because of the extensive use of Alclad 24s alloy sheet in aircraft construction, there is much interest in the metallurgical changes caused by heat-treatment of this product.1, 2 One of these changes is the result of the diffusion of soluble elements from the core into the coating during treatment. This paper deals with the thermal treatments that may influence diffusion and with the practical effects of diffusion on the serviceability of the product. As is well known, Alclad 24s-T sheet has a core of high-strength alloy combined with surface layers of relatively pure aluminum. The microstructure of a cross section of this product is shown by Fig. I. Not only does the relatively high-purity coating have a high resistance to corrosion, and hence serves as a mechanical barrier between the core metal and the corroding environment, but in addition this coating exerts electrochemical protection over areas where the core may be exposed, such as cut edges. In addition, the coating affords electrochemical protection to projecting heads of A17s-T, 17s-T and 24s-T rivets, or attached members made from these alloys. Under some conditions of heat-treatment, however, diffusion of copper into the coating will alter the electrochemical relationship between the coating and the core to the extent that only partial protection will be obtained under some corrosive conditions. The reason for the electrochemical protection lies in the fact that the coating layers of pure aluminum are anodic to the alloy core. The addition of copper to aluminum produces alloys in which the potential is lower than that of the pure metal. Moreover, as the amount of copper in solid solution in 24s alloy is increased, the potential of the alloy becomes more cathodic. When heat-treated at 920°F. and quenched in cold water, 24s-T is about 0.16 volt cathodic to pure aluminum. However, copper will diffuse from the core into the coating, and if it reaches the surface the potential will be altered in a cathodic direction. Thus the potential difference between the core and coating may be less than 0.16 volt, depending uponIthe thickness of the coating, and the time and temperature of heat-treatment. Of the methods available for determining the extent of diffusion of copper from the core into the coating of Alclad 24s-T, two are generally used; namely, the metallo-graphic and the solution potential methods.3 Metallographic Methods Metallographic methods will reveal the progress of diffusion of copper into the coating. For instance, the diffusion zone in the coating intermediate between the coating surface and the core is shown in Fig. I. This photomicrograph is of a polished and etched cross section of 0.040-in. COMMENCING in 1922, each year a lecture has been presented to the Institute of Metals Division at this February meeting. The range of subjects has been very broad. Some speakers have dealt with the most advanced work in the very heart of the science of physical metallurgy. Others have stimulated our imaginations by discussing the most recent progress in related fields of science. Others have told us of the latest art, which is at any moment of greater practical importance than the latest science, of metals. I feel that this broad precedent in the choice of subjects will justify my choosing to talk about some of the prosaic details of how, during the last generation, industry has effectively organized research to accelerate progress in our own and all other fields of science and related art. A number of years ago I visited one of this country's well-known research laboratories and had the pleasure of chatting for a few minutes with its equally well-known director. Being particularly interested at the time in the organization problems connected with industrial research, I broached that subject. My host stated in effect that he didn't believe in organized research. He was, of course, resorting to a rhetorical hyperbole to point out the danger of overorganization which can so easily drift into regimentation and destroy individual initiative. Actually nearly all of us, much as we cherish our personal freedom of action, believe in organization because the history of progress in every field of human activity has been a history of men learning to work together, to cooperate, to create an efficient division of labor. We use organization to achieve this coordination. At the same time our form of organization must not stifle individual initiative or it will prove a deterrent rather than an aid to accomplishment. Research, too, must be organized for greatest achievement but especial skill and care are perhaps needed to avoid stifling the initiative of the individual workers. I have, of course, followed with keen interest and much benefit the vast amount that has been said and written on this subject in the past twenty years but I still find new stimulation in discussions with my good friends working in this field. It is my hope that this discussion may serve a like purpose. It would be ungracious not to make due acknowledgment to the many able contributors to this particular phase of human progress, but their very number and the great volume of their writing makes it impossible to trace to any one individual a particular significant and valuable idea. I shall content myself therefore with this general acknowledgment and with acknowledgment of the specific debt that every research man owes to those who have so ably kept before the public, and in particular before industrial executives, the place of research in the modern scheme of things. ALTHOUGH the mechanical properties of high-carbon manganese-iron alloys, particularly the Hadfield manganese steels, have been established, the literature discloses discrepancies in the reported properties for the low-carbon alloys. Hadfieldlo summarized the existing data up to 1927, including the investigations of Guillet, Arnold, Strauss, Burgess and Aston, and reported his own values for alloys containing for the most part from 0.06 to 0.15 per cent carbon. He noted: From these comparisons it will be seen that while there is a broad and general agreement as to the character of the alloys at the different manganese percentages, there are disparities in individual cases, especially as regards the degree of toughness or brittleness displayed by an alloy with certain percentages and with particular types of treatment. These differences are not always readily explainable. Ib His data showed that alloys containing 4 to 10 per cent manganese water-quenched from 1000°C. were brittle and hard with maximum brittleness at about 7 per cent. Slight improvement in ductility was obtained with compositions from 10 to 17 per cent manganese. Alloys containing up to 17 per cent manganese slowly cooled rather than quenched from 870°C., he found, were slightly improved in ductility with significant improvement in alloys analyzing 4.1 and 4.8 per cent manganese. Recently Walters, Kramer and Loringa reported mechanical properties for alloys made up from electrolytic manganese and ingot iron and containing from 0.02 to 0.04 per cent carbon. They showed that a tempering treatment at 540°C. (1000°F.) for one hour significantly improved the ductility of compositions ranging from 6.7 to 20.7 per cent manganese. The differences of these compared with Hadfield&apos;s results they considered to originate in this tempering treatment plus the fact that Hadfield&apos;s alloys contained higher carbon and phosphorus (0.06 to 0.15 per cent C; 0.06 to 0.07 per cent P compared with 0.02 to 0.04 per cent C, <0.001 per cent P). In this paper it is shown that of the low- carbon alloys (0.02 to 0.03 per cent) containing from 3.3 to 21.5 per cent manganese moderately or rapidly quenched from 1000°C. some are brittle or ductile, depending on presence or absence of hydrogen. Hydrogen is readily absorbed at high temperatures, and much of it is retained when the alloys are cooled to room temperature. The presence of hydrogen in the range of composition from 10 to 18 per cent manganese is a major factor in determining relative ductility. At 22 per cent manganese, and also at compositions below 10 per cent manganese, factors other than or in addition to hydrogen play a role. These are discussed. Also data are presented to show that hydrogen absorbed by the high-carbon alloys of Hadfield composition is without effect on their mechanical properties.

The successful application of ther mo compression lead bonding to semicondtctor or thin-film electronic devices depends on the establishment of the associated parameters. The quality of a thermocompression bond is primarily related to the process temperature and bonding force. A technique using the coelyicient of friction is presented that both reduces the time necessary for determining optimum parameter values and increases the accuracy of the results. Modern theories of the friction process are used to develop mathernatical expressions for shear and tensile bond strengths in terms of friction measurements. A further application of the pararneter-deterlnination technique concerns the measurement of surface contamination that may affect thermocompression bonding. In spite of the extensive use of thermocompression bonding, adequate methods for determining the bonding parameters have not been utilized. The quality of the weld depends on the temperature, force, and time used. There is a definite value or range of values for each parameter which assures an optimum weld. The process now generally used to obtain these values is to make several weld samples at each parametric setting, determine the mean pull strength, and relate the maximum consistent strength to optimum weld conditions. This could involve a very large number of test samples if a thorough search of each parameter were made. Experience and prior knowledge can reduce this number somewhat by limiting the investigation to a range known to contain the correct value, but the time and effort involved are still objectionable. The problems associated with thermocompression bonding of interconnecting leads to semiconductor or thin-film devices can be alleviated by the application of a new technique for establishing the process parameters. Obtaining the correct temperature, force, and duration to assure an optimum bond is accomplished by a simple measurement of the coefficient of friction. This approach increases the accuracy of parameter determination and greatly reduces the time necessary to complete the process. The approach made can be better understood by analyzing the principles of adhesion and friction on which thermocompression bonding depends. When two flat polished surfaces are placed together, the area of actual contact is much less than the apparent area determined by the over-all dimensions of the surface. This is because the microscopic surface is covered with projections which prevent uniform contact. Careful measurements of the electrical resistance across the contacting surfaces indicate the actual area may only be 1100,000 of the apparent area.&apos; Because the actual contact area is small, extremely high pressure results from moderate force. This will produce deformation and plastic flow at contact points of the microscopic projections. The process will terminate in the creation of a large number of minute welds formed at extreme pressure and cold-worked to strong, hard bonds. Load removal will generally result in fracture of most of these microbonds because of the residual elastic stresses, unless the materials are soft. As soon as the Congress recognized the alarming rate at which our domestic oil resources were being depleted during the war, it took action to step up the rate of research and development which the Bureau of Mines had been conducting for several years on the production of synthetic liquid fuels from coals. Under Public Law 290, approved April 5, 1944, funds were authorized for the Bureau to proceed with research, development, design and construction of demonstration plants for the hydrogenation of coal, the synthesis of oil from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and the distillation of oil from shale. During the latter part of 1944, when it became evident that the collapse of Germany was near, a Technical Oil Mission was organized to study the German techniques of synthetic oil production. Since the cost of hydrogen or synthesis gas is one of the major factors of expense in the operation of hydrogenation or synthesis gas processes, the Bureau of Mines considered it of prime importance to include on the mission gas engineers whose instructions were to examine closely the methods employed by the Germans in solving the problem of providing low-cost hydrogen or synthesis gas for their very extensive operations on synthetic liquid fuels. The Solid Fuels Mission and the Utilities Mission, as well as the Army and Navy Missions, also included teams for the study of German gas production. Although their objectives naturally differed from those of the Technical Oil Mission and from each other, it was recognized that there was considerable overlapping of their fields of investigation. Duplication of effort, however, was largely avoided through the close cooperation between the group leaders of these missions. For example, although I went to Europe as a member of the Technical Oil Mission, my first Gcrman assignment was actually made by Dr. Harry F. Yancey, leader of the Solid Fuels Mission— to investigate the brown-coal gasification methods in central Germany. The art of gasification in the United States and England, and to a large extent in the proximity of the coking-coal regions of Germany and the rest of continental Europe, depends essentially on two stages of operation; namely, carbonization and intermittent water-gas generation. As far as the United States is concerned, complete gasification in a single stage of operation is rarely practiced, except in gas-producer operations where the product is a relatively lean gas consumed close to the point of manufacture, and for water-gas production with anthracite as a generator fuel. Complete gasification of bituminous coal has been the subject of numerous investigations. Many relatively simple modifications of the water-gas generator have been tried to permit the direct gasification of low-cost bituminous coal instead of high-cost coke and anthracite for the production of water gas. This paper deals with the origin, definition and prevention of scabs on semifinished rolled-steel product. Mold coatings, which are considered essential in scab prevention, were found to be effective only in relation to the ingot surface of semikilled and killed steels and not necessary for the rolled product. That is to say, the scabs on ingots caused by having been cast in uncoated molds are eliminated in the soaking and rolling operations, therefore are not present on the rolled product. This fact, which is contrary to the average opinion, was established after extensive and thorough experiments had proved the ordinary conception of the origin of scabs to be incorrect. This subject may be of little or no concern to steel plants producing small ingots for the manufacture of small billets and bars, except as it may be of interest in showing why their surface troubles with scabs do not exist on the product of heats with normal pouring practice. But to the producer of large ingots to be rolled into slabs for large plates used in shipbuilding, it is a very important subject. Definition of a Scab The generally accepted opinion is that the individual scabs present on rolled products (as shown by Fig. I) are considered to have been individual splashes on the ingot surface. This opinion was found to be incorrect. Experiments showed that there were no individual scabs on the product that had appeared as individuals on the ingot surface. The single scabs seen are either pieces of a shell that is present near the bottom of all top-cast ingots, or a veneer that may be present on any part of an ingot improperly poured, as when the stream strikes the mold wall. This definition is based on a detailed study of scabs and their characteristics in which the following have been found true: Location.—On the product of heats poured without trouble, scabs, if present, are always on the product that corresponds to the bottom end of the ingot, and usually occur in clusters. This is true whether molds are coated or not. Shape.—There is no regularity as to shape, size or thickness. It is sometimes possible to separate a few pieces and place them together, like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, indicating that at one time they had been united as one piece. If individual splashes were the origin of scabs, the foregoing would not be true. Instead, the splashes, which occur throughout the pouring of the ingots, would be present uniformly over the entire product and there would be considerable similarity in the shape and thickness of the scabs. Experimental Work Our experimental work was conducted on 200-ton heats of semikilled plate steel tapped into an oval ladle 15 ft. high. All ingots were top-cast direct into 24 by 54 by 82-in. molds, straight-sided, set on flat stools. Two separate studies were made about one year apart, each study extending

The most widely used methods of predicting the volumetric properties of gas are based on the principle of corresponding states, which asserts that the compressibility factor is a universal function of reduced temperature and pressure. Previous studies have shown that the acentric factor, as proposed by Pitzer, l is an important addition to reduced pressure and reduced temperature as factors affecting the compressibility factor. Results of this study indicate that, if the pseudocritical temperature and pressure used to determine the reduced conditions are adequately predicted, characterization of natural gas-carbon dioxide mixtures with the acentric factor will allow reliable determination of the compressibility factor. Comparisons of predicted and experimental compressibility factors have shown that the pseudo-critical constant rules of Stewart, Burkhardt and Voo 2 are satisfactory for hydrocarbon mixtures. However, these rules fail to predict the pseduo-critical constants for hydrocarbon-carbon dioxide mixtures. Based on graphically determined pseudocritical temperatures for binary hydrocarbon-carbon dioxide mixtures, a correlation which gives the required correction to the Stewart, Burkhardt and Voo rules was prepared and a compressibility factor prediction technique was proposed. To test the proposed technique, compressibility factors for live mixtures of methane, carbon dioxide and either ethne or propane were experimentally determined at 100, 130 and 160F and pressures up to 7,026 psia. The predicted and experimental compressibility factors for these live mixtures had an average absolute deviation of 0.55 percent. INTRODUCTION Two-parameter generalized correlations based on the principle of corresponding states (PCS) are presently available for reliably predicting the compressibility factor of lean natural gas, i.e., natural gas with low concentrations of hydrocarbons heavier than methane. When these same correlations are used for mixtures of natural gas and carbon dioxide, large deviations between actual and predicted compressibility factors are observed. This study was undertaken to provide a means for accurately predicting the compressibility factor for such mixtures. In the past, two avenues of approach have been employed to extend the applicability of the PCS. The first has been to introduce additional parameters. The second has been to develop combination rules for predicting pseudocritical constants which do not suffer from the limitations of the commonly used molal average constants. In this study, both of these approaches have been considered and employed to arrive at a method for predicting the compressibility factor of mixtures of hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide. SELECTION OF A THIRD PARAMETER Failure of the original PCS to predict the compressibility factor for all pure gases, regardless of their mass, shape or polar moment, has led to the introduction of additional parameters into the PCS. Parameters have been introduced to correct for quantum deviations,3-5 non-spherical or globular shapes6-9 and for polar moments.8-12 In addition to these parameters which are based on some microscopic property and intended to correct for some specific cause of deviation, more general parameters based on some bulk property have also been introduced.1913-16 To use additional parameters to correct for each of the possible causes of deviation among the individual constituents of a gas mixture would require a rather complex form of the PCS. To maintain the PCS in as simple a form as possible, it is more desirable to have a single third parameter which is based on some bulk property influenced by several of the factors causing deviations. The third parameter selected for use in this study is a factor originally proposed by Pitzer.9

It is the purpose of this paper to show the importance of sand characteristics, when combined with other physical data, in evaluating production obtained by secondary recovery operations, and to indicate the benefits to be gained from the application of these principles to primary production. Introduction During the past 10 years there has been a growing interest within the industry regarding the movement of fluids through oil reservoirs. A number of research projects have been directed toward the development of the physical laws governing this movement. In the period 1933 to the present, correlations between laboratory analysis of cores, reservoir fluids and well performance have been established and have been applied to successful secondary water-flooding recovery operations; and to the completion, production, reconditioning and evaluation of wells in new fields. The application of these data to water-flooding, either natural or artificial, is comparatively new, but the principlcs involved were set forth in 1880 by John F. Carll,1 who said: The flooding of an oil district is generally viewed as a great calamity, yet it may be questioned whether a larger amount of oil cannot be drawn from the rocks in that way than by any other, for it is certain that all the oil can-not be drawn from the reservoir without admission of something to take its place. If one company owned all of the wells drawing upon a pool, and had accurate records of the depth and characteristics of the oil producing stratum in each well, it is quite possible that some system might be devised by which water could be let down through certain shafts, and thus the rocks be completely voided of oil and left full of water. As it is, however, no systematized plan of action can be adopted. The careless handling of one well. by which water is let down to the oil rock, may spoil several others belonging to different parties. A clashing of interests at once arises and is likely to result in disaster to the whole district. In judging of the probable effects of the intro-duction of water into any particular oil district several things are to be considered. (1st) The time of flooding—whether early in the progress of development, while yet a large percentage of oil remains unexhausted or at a later period after the supply has suffered from long continued depletion. (2nd) The structure of the rock—whether regular and homogeneous throughout, or composed of fine sand inter. bedding connected and irregular layers of gravel, sometimes lying near the top and at others near the bottom. (3rd) The shape of the area being flooded. (4th) The position of the point at which water is admitted. in relation to the location of the surrounding wells still pumping oil. (5th) The height (which governs the pressure) of the column of water obtaining admittance. (6th) The duration of the water supply. Although we may take exception to part of Carll&apos;s reasoning, particularly " and thus the rocks be completely voided of oil and left full of water," we must give him credit for pointing out the increased effectiveness of water encroachment in displacing oil from a sand and for his recording six of the present seven considerations necessary for evaluation of production of oil by water

THE importance of contact angles in flotation has long been recognized, but little has been done to get quantitative relationships between the surface coverage of the mineral by the reagent, the length of the hydrocarbon chain, and the contact angle. It is well known that for a complete monolayer on the surface of a mineral the contact angle 8 is determined only by the reagent1 and principally by the chain length of the hydrocarbon radical. Although for flotation the monolayer usually is regarded as being complete, early experiments of Wark and Cox&apos; showed that at very small concentrations of potassium ethyl xanthate the contact angle on galena changed in a continuous way from 0&apos; to the equilibrium value of 60". Further, Gaudin and Vincenta showed a similar continuity using heptylic acid and sphalerite. This shows that with probably incomplete monolayers, 0 varies with the degree of surface coverage. At the time these experiments were made it was impossible to measure the actual amount of surface coverage, especially since the decrease of the collector concentration in the liquor could be influenced by chemical side reactions. Through the use of the radioactive tracer method for the measurement of the amount of collector adsorbed on the surface of the mineral, Gaudin and Bloecher&apos; were able to determine accurately the actual surface coverage of dodecylamine acetate on quartz, but they did not measure any contact angles. It is believed that the relationship between the surface coverage and the contact angle is extremely important in flotation, especially as Gaudin and Bloecher showed that a 95 pct recovery is possible with a coverage of only 5 pct. Theoretical Considerations The work of adhesion W is the energy bound (in ergs per sq cm) when an interface is formed. It is determined by the difference of the free surface energies (surface tensions) of the respective phases 7j and yZ before contact and the interfacial free surface energy y, after contact. The definition of the contact angle permits the elimination of the unknown surface energy of the solid and hence the calculation of W from the surface tension of the liquid y and the contact angle 8: W = y (1 + COS0) [1] Consider a surface consisting of two components, identified as 2 and 3, 1 being the liquid. The amount of 2 in the composite surface is x, where 0 < x < 1. The respective contact angles with 1 and air are 8, and 8.. The total work of adhesion of such a surface is the sum of the values of the components multiplied by their respective areas. A formal relation can be written: Wm = x-W2+ (l-x)-W, [2] in which W, is the work of adhesion of the composite surface. Eq 1 can be introduced into Wt and Wa, but in the case of W, some discussion is needed. If the two components are segregated, each component forming an integral part of the composite surface there is no physical meaning for a contact angle 8m calculated from W,, by using eq 1. If, on the other hand, the area of each patch of the components is small in comparison with, say, the diameter of the bubble used in measuring, it could be expected that 0m would have a physical significance, because of the action of the surface tension of the liquid-gas interface tending to smooth out sharp corners. Application of the coal hydrogenation process for the production of chemicals is described. It has been estimated that a plant to produce 31,090 bbl per day of chemicals and fuels would cost $326,- 000,000. These products would consist of 6.1 pct by weight tar acids, 50.8 pct aroma tics, 16.4 pct LPG, and 26.7 pct gasoline. THE coal hydrogenation process is well known as a means for the production of liquid fuels from coal. In this paper the possibilities of the coal hydrogenation process as a source of chemical raw materials will be discussed. The recovery of chemicals from coal hydrogenation products necessitates some modifications and additions to the equipment used for the production of fuels. The conversion of coal into liquid fuels such as gasoline requires two steps: liquid phase and vapor phase hydrogenation. Intermediate oils obtained in the liquid phase contain oxygen and nitrogen compounds, especially aromatic compounds, since the coal itself is composed mainly of cyclic compounds. These oils are the raw material for the separation of high molecular weight aro-matics and of tar acids and tar bases. The relative amounts of heavy and middle oil—boiling above and below, e.g., 325°C—can be influenced by temperature, residence time, and catalyst of the liquid phase hydrogenation. In the vapor phase hydrogenation a solid bed catalyst is used to convert the intermediate oil from the liquid phase operation into hydrocarbons of the gasoline boiling range. Essentially pure hydrocarbons with a low content of sulphur, oxygen, nitrogen, and olefines are obtained. Depending mainly on the catalyst, the high ring compound content of the liquid phase oil can be preserved and gasoline rich in aromatics obtained. However, with other catalysts, these ring compounds can be split into gasoline with a high content of isoparaffins.&apos; Again, depending on the operating conditions, products of varying boiling range can be obtained. Selection of catalyst and operating conditions therefore makes possible the production of different grades of motor fuel and also variations in the relative amounts of benzene, toluene, and xylene when aromatic hydrocarbons are produced. The schematic flowsheet, Fig. 1, shows the main steps of the coal hydrogenation process, and the product streams used for the recovery of chemicals are indicated. In the liquid phase hydrogenation stage, coal is made into a paste with recycle heavy oil. The coal paste is mixed with hydrogen and preheated at a pressure of 300 to 700 atm in heat exchangers and preheaters. The coal paste and hydrogen enter high pressure converters where the liquefaction of coal, conversion of the high boiling liquid materials initially obtained, into intermediate oils is performed at a temperature around 470°C. The reaction products enter the hot catchpot in which lower boiling oil vapors are separated from the residue containing unreacted coal, ash, and heavy oil. This residue, usually called H.O.L.D. (heavy oil let down), is processed to separate solid and liquid material. By thermal treatment of the residue, e.g., a coking process, distillate oil is obtained, which can be recycled as part of the pasting oil. This stream is rich in polynuclear aromatics and can be, and has been, used for the recovery of such material. DISCUSSION John G. Barry (Mexico)—"The Nerinea limestone," writes W. H. Triplett, p. 584, "is ... medium-bedded (0.5 to 1.0 m)...." This is the Zuloaga formation. It has always been described as thick-bedded (1.0 to 3.0 m). "Whether the marls and shales were less amenable to replacement," he goes on to say, ". . . is a matter of opinion." In general, it is probable that the thinner-bedded formations were less competent than the nearby thicker-bedded, so that the latter produced pre-mineral breccias when all were subjected to flexing stresses. With reference to Mr. Triplett&apos;s analysis, p. 584, under Lower Cretaceous, in the Taraises and Cupido formations some few horizons should be considered as possibly containing hidden orebodies. In the Potrero camp, shown on the general map in the northwestern part of Fig. 4, p. 587, several mineralized beds are known; they are found throughout the whole thickness of the Cuesta del Cura formation. With regard to intrusive rocks, p. 585, the general map, Fig. 4, shows that the Potrero and Noche Buena camps are near a third, monzonitic intrusive. It seems doubtful that the Aranzazu was any hotter than the Providencia camp. However, the former does contain large deposits of exogenetic silicates, which in large part occur within the Zuloaga limestone, as shown by Bergeats in a stereogram. At the Aranzazti camp the La Caja formation was only slightly changed, whereas it was altered highly at the Providencia, possibly en-dogenetically. That the temperatures at the Providencia camp were relatively high at one time is also shown by the tourmaline veinlets and lenses in the monzonite and by the garnets on Temeroso peak; high temperature mineralization has possibly been eroded. Maps and sections show that the Concepcion del Oro —Temeroso stock occupies the original locus of some 40 kms of sedimentary rocks. The remains of large roof pendants at Carmen and Animas indicate that stoping was active. Whether all the sedimentaries were stoped and assimilated presents a lively problem, a correlative of which would be an estimate of the original constitution of the invading instrusive rock. As to extrusive rocks, see p. 585, there is also a large thick area of the extrusives left near Noche Buena in the "La Caja" intramontane valley of the La Caja range. This place gave its name to the range. The volcanics are also said to occur in considerable amount in the Mazapil valley.&apos;&apos; Turning now to the remarks under Regional Structure, p. 586, as partly indicated on the general map, Fig. 4, the Mazapil Mountains of the Mazapil region are a continuous, U-shaped range including a northern leg of some 24 km, a southern leg of similar length, and a uniting base which lies to the East and which measures some 10 km in a S 20 E direction. Thus the U-shaped mountains are continuous through a length of 58 km and also contain one continuous anticline, the adjacent valleys being synclinal. The northern leg of the U is called the La Caja range, the base is called the Concepcion del Oro range, and the southern leg the Santa Rosa range. The ranges in northeastern Zacatecas and southern Coahuila contain anticlines and the valleys contain synclines, which where thin are necessarily highly compressed isoclines with very steep dips. Many of the anticlines also have isoclinal components which are overturned, original mushroom tops being indicated. The anticline in the base of the U of the Mazapil Region, Concepcion del Oro range, is a recumbent anticline, over to the ENE, with a necessarily subjacent recumbent syncline.

A scrubber of new design has been invented for the beneficiation of glass and chemical sands. The machine is described and its capacity and metallurgical efficiency compared with the performance of other sand cleaning devices. THREE years ago, when the Process Research Laboratory at Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. sought a remedy for the increasing cost of disposing of great quantities of spent sands from foundries, R. C. Edwards developed a continuous inclined paddle scrubber which removed a substantial amount of the charred coatings from the grains with a surprisingly small amount of degradation of the sand itself.&apos; The satisfactory results obtained on foundry sand, using this piece of equipment in conjunction with classification, suggested that a similar procedure could probably be applied to the cleaning of other sands, such as those required by the glass and chemical industries. This paper describes the flowsheet and the results of tests performed on impure natural sands. The four materials tested were silica sands obtained from widely separated geographical areas. Three of the sands tested contained various amounts of iron oxide and the fourth an excessive amount of calcareous bonding material. The iron oxide was present predominantly in the form of grain coatings, which were scuffed by the paddle scrubber, and in all cases a product was manufactured which would meet one of the sets of specifications imposed by the glass industry.&apos; The Edwards paddle scrubber used in these tests consists of a rubber-lined steel cylinder 18 in. in diam and 48 in. long, mounted on a frame so that its slope can be varied 5" to 35" from horizontal. This variable slope permits controlled flow of material through the machine. Rubber paddles rotate inside the cylinder and are secured to a center shaft 2 in. square, which extends through the entire length and is turned at both ends so that it can be supported by sleeve bearings centrally fixed in the end plates of the shell. At the upper or feed end it extends through the bearing on the end plate into a sheave, to which the motor drive is connected by means of Texrope transmission. The four sets of paddles mounted on the shaft, two in each set, are made of rubber belting, 1/4 in. thick, 9 in. wide, and 16 in. long. The two paddles in each set are secured on opposite sides of the square shaft, but in the same longitudinal position along the shaft axis. In other words, the two paddles in the set operate 180" apart. Each successive set is mounted 90" from the preceding one. One end of each paddle is bolted to the square shaft and the other weighted by a steel bar, lx1 1hx9 in. long, which is attached about Yz in. from the outer tip of the paddle. By centrifugal force at proper shaft speed, these weights force the paddle surface to rub smoothly against the rubber lining of the cylinder. During operation, the sand forces its way between the paddle face and the surface of the cylinder, providing the necessary abrading action as the pulp flows by gravity down the length of the cylinder. The capacity of the machine is limited by the amount and the hardness of the coating material and by the quality of product desired. TWO overfeed drum-type separators using a suspension of magnetite in water as the separating medium have been installed in the Champion NO. 1 preparation plant of the Pittsburgh Coal Co., Division of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Company. A simplified flow diagram of the Champion No. 1 coarse coal circuit is shown in Fig. 1. A railroad car rotary dump, capable of handling 20 cars per hr, discharges the coal into a hopper. Coal is fed from the hopper of the rotary dump to a 60-in. belt conveyor by two reciprocating pan-type feeders. The belt conveyor feeds the run of mine coal onto the main raw coal screen. The first deck is fitted with 3 in. round hole perforated plate which removes the 3x0-in. coal. The second deck of the screen is equipped with 6-in. lip screens which separate the remaining coal into +6 in. and 6x3 in. The +6 in. coal is transferred to a shaking picking table and then discharged onto the loading boom. The 6x3-in. coal is fed to the No. 2 dense medium vessel for cleaning. The clean coal from this unit flows to a vibrating screen where the medium is removed and the coal sized into 6x4 in. and 4x3 in. The 6x4-in. coal is transferred to the loading booms and the 4x3-in. is conveyed to the clean coal classifying screens to remove degradation. The 3x0-in. raw coal is blended in a system composed of three storage bins having a total capacity of 400 tons. From these bins the coal is fed onto a 48-in. flight conveyor by three reciprocating feeders. This flight conveyor delivers the coal to the Rheo plant. The 3x0-in. coal is then cleaned in two 48-in. Rheolaveur launders each equipped with two Rheo boxes. The first set of boxes removes a primary refuse and the second set produces a middling product which is recirculated in the launders. The cleaned coal and water overflows from the primary launders to two sizing and dewatering shaker screens where the water and — -in. coal are removed for further cleaning in the Rheo fine coal plant. The 3x3h-in. clean coal is combined with the 4x3-in. coal from the No. 2 vessel, sized into 4x2 in., 2x1 34 in., and 1&apos;/4x in., then sent to the loading booms. The 3x0-in. refuse from the primary launders is normally fed to the No. 1 dense medium circuit, but any portion or all of this material can, as an alternate, be processed in the Rheo rewash launder. The primary refuse when fed to the dense medium circuit is screened into YSXO which is cleaned in the fine coal plant and 3x for cleaning in the No. 1 vessel. The clean coal from this vessel is passed over a vibrating drainage and rinse screen, then sluiced to the rewash sizing shaker where it is dewatered and sized for loading. To overcome the problems of mudcake and hole irregularities, the new compensated formation density logging device employs two detectors spaced at different intervals from the source. The detector at the shorter spacing is particularly sensitive to the density of material immediately adjacent to the face of the pad. The contribution of this material, which includes mudcake and minor wall irregularities, affects the response of each detector to a different degree. The signals from both detectors are combined to give automatically a density correction which is added to the uncompensated density information from the detector at the longer spacing. Both the compensated density measurement and the amount of compensation are then recorded on the log. With the unwanted borehole effects removed, the measurement is recorded directly in terms of bulk density on a linear scale. INTRODUCTION Formation density is a very useful and diagnostic parameter for formation evaluation. When the matrix lithology is known, porosity is accurately and readily computed from density data.&apos;-" hen the density measurements are used with other porosity-responsive measurements, such as Sonic and Neutron logs, both lithology and porosity may be defined with good accuracy."&apos;" In the past, however, application of density logs was complicated by the need for corrections to obtain true formation densities from the log values. Mudcakes on permeable formations and roughness of the borehole walls have been particularly troublesome since, in each case, the device was prevented from direct contact with the formation. ~ttempts have been made to correct for such conditions by making a simultaneous caliper log, estimating pad standoff, and assuming knowledge of the composition of the intervening materials. While such corrections are frequently accurate, they are not always reliable because of uncertainties in the pad standoff and material composition. A further complication was the necessity for manual conversion of log counting rates to density. The newly introduced compensated formation density logging device (FDC) automatically corrects for mudcake and minor wall irregularities, and provides a log that is scaled directly in bulk density. The purpose of this paper is to discuss briefly the equipment, to explain the theoretical considerations involved in the compensation, and to present field examples of this new log. COMPENSATED FORMATION DENSITY EQUIPMENT The FDC tool incorporates two major advances over previous density logging devices: a second detector, spaced closer to the gamma ray source to provide increased sensitivity to material close to the pad; and the automatic derivation of a corrected formation density from the two counting rates. The arrangement of the source and detectors is shown in Fig. 1. The longer spacing detector is at the same spacing from the source and gives the same response as the single detector in the previous uncompensated device. By appropriate combination of the outputs of the two detectors, the FDC tool is able to compensate in large measure for effects of mudcake and hole rugosity. This is achieved, as will be described later, without specific knowledge of either the thickness or the nature of material between the pad and formation. To obtain corrected formation density, the two count rates are automatically processed by an analog computer in the surface panel. More specifically, the computer derives a value of uncompensated formation density from the long-spacing counting rate, computes a density correction p using both the long and the short spacing count-

Isothermal temper-embrittlement studies were conducted on a 5140 steel at various temperatures for times as long as 3000 hr. Specimens from the embrittled steel were subjected to impact tests, metallographic examination, microhardness, and lattice-parameter measurements. SEVERAL of the steels in the low alloy group are subject to a pronounced decrease in impact energy if held within, or cooled slowly through, a range of temperatures below the lower critical. This phenomenon, known as temper embrittlement, is quite pronounced in the chromium steels of which AISI 5140 is typical. This study considered the response of one heat of 5140 steel when embrittled isothermally at various temperatures for times as long as 3000 hr. Excellent reviews of the work done in the field of temper embrittlement have been written by Hollomonl and Woodfine.&apos; Both authors list the various theories which have been advanced to explain temper embrittlement. Some of the mechanisms considered were: 1—a transformation below 700°C; 2—an allotropic modification of iron; 3—precipitation from the ferrite of such compounds as carbides, nitrides, phosphides, or chromium oxides; 4—decomposition of retained austenite; 5—modification of special carbides; 6—grain-boundary segregation; and 7—selective distribution of carbides. The present study investigated the changes in hardness, Meyer&apos;s number, impact properties, micro-structure, and lattice parameter which occurred on embrittlement. Previous studies considered the influence of microstructure and of prior austenitic grain size3 on the response of 5140 steel to temper embrittlement. Equipment and Procedure All samples were taken from one heat of 5140 steel; the chemical composition of this steel was: 0.43 pct C, 0.86 pct Mn, 0.020 pct P, 0.019 pct S, 0.27 pct Si, 0.84 pct Cr, 0.10 pct Ni, 0.06 pct Mo, 0.10 pct Cu, and the remainder Fe. The material was received as % in. rounds. This stock was cut down to blanks measuring approximately 0.425~0.425~2.196 in. Heat Treatment: The rough blanks were normalized at 1600°F (870°C) for 1 hr, then austenitized at 1600°F (870°C) for 1 1/2 hr, and quenched into an agitated oil bath. The specimens were tempered at 1275°F (690°C) for 5 hr and water quenched. These tempered specimens were designated as the toughened state. Embrittling Treatments: The tempered bars were divided into sets and subjected to the various embrittling treatments listed in Table I. Temperatures from 750" to 1050°F were investigated for times of 1 to 3000 hr. Special tests to determine the effect of heating a short time at a higher temperature after long-time embrittlement at some lower temperature were also conducted. All specimens were water quenched at the end of the embrittling cycle, then ground and notched to obtain standard Charpy V-notch specimens. Impact Tests: The bars were fractured in a 260 ft-lb Charpy impact unit; specimens were fractured at temperatures ranging from —315°F to room temperature. Fixed temperatures used consisted of —315°F with liquid nitrogen, —115°F with dry ice and acetone, and 32°F with ice and water. Intermediate temperatures were obtained by suspending the bars in a jig over the liquid nitrogen, dry ice and acetone, or ice and water.

The key to disagreements between Blackburn&apos;s findings and mine is the word equilibrium". My work attempted to define the equilibrium diagram of the titanium-rich end of the Ti-A1 system. It can readily be shown that Blackburn&apos;s conclusions are based primarily on the examination of structures substantially removed from equilibrium. The diagram presented in Fig. 16 is properly labeled a "phase diagram". However, it appears that Blackburn either does not understand or does not accept the difference between "phase diagram" and "equilibrium diagram" as defined in the Metals Handbook.17 The conflict lies not in Blackburn&apos;s data but in his interpretation of it, and his use of "transformation", "phase diagram", and "equilibrium diagram" as synonymous terms. I share his view that the light microscope is much inferior to the transmission electron microscope for the study of transformations; but this fact does not render the light microscope useless or untrustworthy. The difficulties experienced with the Ti-A1 system have not been due to the limitations of the light microscope, but rather to the extreme sluggishness in achieving equilibrium at temperatures below 1000° C. Were it not for the light microscope employed with polarized light, the twin phase syndrome&apos; might still be unrecognized and, as a consequence, still adding to the confusion of Ti-A1 investigations. (Ref. 1 should read ... Contract No. N161-25952 ... vol. 236.) Other, more sophisticated techniques, including electron transmission, simply confirm the erroneous tentative conclusions drawn from observations of structures due to the twin-phase syndrome. By the standards of most of the investigations of the Ti-A1 systems, seven of the fifteen compositions investigated by Blackburn were seriously contaminated with oxygen. The writer has found that 0.1 wt pct 0 shifts the a + Ti3A1 boundary to 1 at. pct lower A1 content at 700°C. At constant aluminum content, this corresponds to a temperature shift of the boundary of +25°c.18 Blackburn advises that the first group of alloys contained 0.1 to 0.15 wt pct 0, bur he does say whether the analyses were performed on as-received material or on specimens in their final state of heat treatment. This is especially important considering the 20-mil-thick starting materials. If specimens had been annealed in the two-phase a + 6 region it would have provided an indication of the final degree of oxygen contamination since up to about 12 at. pct A1 the boundaries of this region are well-defined for low-oxygen alloys. Blackburn questions the capability of light microscopy in determining phase boundaries in the Ti-A1 system. I submit that the a/a + Ti3A1 boundary in Fig. 1 of Ref. 1 over the composition range from 10 to 18 at. pct A1 was determined by dilatometry and supported by electron diffraction. Specimens of alloys containing 8, 10, 12, and 14 at. pct A1 were aged at 550°C for 1000 hr (under stress of 5000 psi to accelerate the tendency to equilibrium) and then fractured in tension at room temperature. Collodion was applied to the as-fractured (unetched) surface and, when stripped, carried away particles identified by electron diffraction as Ti3A1. INTRODUCTION A small, independent mining enterprise (SIME) is an independently owned and operated business concern engaged primarily in mineral development, from the exploration to the production stage. By definition, a SIME is not dominant in its field and has no long-term financial backing. It is not a major producer of minerals, nor is it a petroleum company, a government organization or a subsidiary of such organizations. A SIME may or may not be listed on stock exchanges. The SIME is also called small miner, junior mining company, speculative mining company, and penny-stock mining company. The survival and growth of a SIME is most often controlled by an independently minded entrepreneur, who not only conceives and carries out new projects, but is materially affected by the success or failure of these projects. Usually, a SIME does not have a large or constant cash flow. Such a lack of long-term financial backing forces the SIME to meet the challenge of finding capital for its activities on a step-by-step basis. Its survival strategy is thus based on finding funds at the right time, of the right type and in the right quantities. The purpose of this paper is to show that the type of venture in which a SIME is involved affects the difficulty of raising new capital and the choice of possible sources of funds. The Small, Independent Mining Enterprise (SIME) The SIME is not a figment of the imagination of financial speculators. In Canada, there are more than 1,800 small mineral enterprises which spend on the average less than $1,000,000 per year on activity which is directed at bringing forth new mineral supply. In the United States, 64% of the non-fuel mining operations are conducted by nine or fewer men, and the coal industry is characterized by several thousand smaller independent producers, still predominantly family owned or controlled. In Chile, 80% of the mines can be classified as small mines. In the Philippines, approximately 60% of metal mining operations are classified as small mines. The SIME is actively engaged in mining all over the world, and very much so in the Pacific Rim. The Mineral Supply Process The whole process of bringing forth new mineral supply involves a dynamic sequence of activities, ranging from the initial exploration for a mineral occurrence to the production of a marketable product. A typical sequence is outlined in Figure 1. At the grass-roots exploration stage, a series of geological, geophysical and geochemical tests is aimed at locating a mineral occurrence. Especially in the early phases of such activities, the uncertainty (risk) surrounding a venture is high, since only general geological information exists on which to base a judgement of the economic viability of the venture. Such risk is attractive to few investors. As the information-gathering process continues, uncertainty diminishes. Once exploration efforts result in the discovery of a mineral occurrence, i.e. when indications of mineralization and mineable widths are obtained by drilling, there is still uncertainty concerning the extent of mineralization and the probability of having located an economic mineral deposit. The expected return on investment at such a stage may well be negative but the slight possibility of a very high positive return will make a number of financial sources available to an exploration company. A new electric logging method, called displacement logging, often gives a direct indication of the presence of mobile hydrocarbons in hydrocarbon-bearing formations. This method is based on the detection of a bank of connate water which is formed between the invading mud filtrate and virgin formation fluids in these cases. The existence of this phenomenon has beer, verified by laboratory studies and by actual field logs taken in known oil sands. INTRODUCTION During the past decade increasing use has been made of conventional electric logs to determine the amount of oil or gas in formations traversed by a borehole. This determination requires knowledge of several factors, such as true resistivity of the formation, formation factor, and water resistivity. Sometimes all of the factors necessary to make a reliable saturation calculation are not available. Also, the computations and corrections which are necessary in such a study often require the services of an experienced log analyst. It has long been the desire of exploration people to have a logging device which will locate hydrocarbon-bearing formations directly without requiring complex interpretation methods. The displacement log, while not completely fulfilling this desire, appears to be a Step in that direction. Basis for the Device The basis for this device stems from a phenomenon which occurs when mud filtrate invades a formation which contains displaceable hydrocarbons. As the mud filtrate invades the formation, most of the oil or gas is pushed out of the invaded zone, leaving residual oil. However, in addition to displacing most of the oil or gas, the connate water is also swept out, since the originally irreducible water is mobile in the presence of a water phase.1,2,3 Tonsequently, this irreducible water piles up as a bank between the virgin oil zone and the invading filtrate. If the mud filtrate is of higher resistivity than the formation water— as is commonly the case—the resulting annular zone, containing the bank of formation water, will be of lower resistivity than either the virgin oil-bearing formation resistivity or the invaded zone resistivity. This resistivity configuration, going from high to low to high again as the distance from the borehole increases, is found only in those zones which contain displaceable hydrocarbons. A device which would reliably detect this low resistivity zone would give a direct indication of mobile hydrocarbons. Illustrations This phenomenon is illustrated in Fig. 1 and 2.
