IN 1948 in the United States, 184,300 tons of lead was fabricated as coverings for electric power and communication cables. Such covering generally is called "sheathing" for the principal lengths of the cables, while the short lead encasements of the joints are called "sleeves." For the purpose of this paper, both lead sheathing and lead sleeving can fittingly be called lead tubing. In the United States in the same year, 34,262 tons of lead was consumed in making extruded lead pipes. Such pipe is employed frequently for water or chemical solution conveyance with gage pressures up to 100 psi. Consequently, the walls are thicker in ratio to diameter than is the case with the cable sheaths. For this discussion, lead pipes can be thought of as tubes or tubing. About 19 centuries ago, the Romans produced metallic lead of about 99.9 pct purity. Evidently this was cast in flat sheets of Y8-in. thickness, for instance. Such sheet of 10-ft lengths was bent around a removable core producing a tube somewhat oval in cross-section and with a typical internal diameter of, say, 3 in. This method of production necessitated a seam or longitudinal joint evidently made by casting the seam metal adherently. The seam metal, as analyzed recently, contains about 1 ½ pct Sn. Blow pipes were said to have been employed when the joint was made. Specimens of such pipe were found both in Italy and in the British Isles. It is believed the pipes conveyed water for drinking purposes and for baths. Numerous specimens are still in existence in a good state of preservation, due to lead's usual inertness in air or water. According to Claude E. Pearson,1 there were various stages in the evolution of lead extrusion presses for making tubes: I. First press by Joseph Bramah, 1797. 2-First successful press by Thomas Burr, 1820. 3-First bridge die press, J. and C. Hanson, 1837. In 1845, Wheatston and Crooke made the first lead sheathed electric cable. Flat lead strip was wound spirally around the insulated conductor. Overlapping edges of lead were soldered. Early cables were also made by pulling insulated conductors into 50-ft lengths of lead tube. Borel in France, and Wesselau are credited with devising the first presses for extruding lead sheaths directly on cables in 1879. In the United States, Eaton, in 188o, and Roberston, in 1885, introduced new presses of improved design. Following Cunningham's original idea of making lead traps and. bends in 1873, the presses apparently were improved and made successfully soon thereafter. Between the years 1930 and 1940, two continuous extrusion presses for lead were developed abroad. One apparently was originated by Dunsheath and made by the Henley Telegraph Works Co. The other was developed by the Pirelli-General Cable Co. CURRENT PRODUCTION In addition to the several descriptive chapters on lead extrusion in Pearson's book, the Metals Handbook2 recently described pipe, sheath, and collapsible tube production. The latter is by impact extrusion.

After six years of war-enforced idleness, Cyprus copper mines are operating again. This relatively long shutdown seems infinitesimal when compared with something like seventeen hundred years of inactivity that followed the important operations of the ancient Romans, and continued until the twentieth century. The historical records of the ancient operators are scarce but full of interest to those who realize that Cyprus copper production was important more than two thousand years ago. This paper, however, will give only a brief review of the ancient history and the evidence of ancient mining which have been quite fully covered in other publications.1-6 The purpose of this paper is to give a general sketch of the Cyprus Mines Corporation's enterprise in the Island of Cyprus, with special emphasis on those conditions and practices which are unusual. The picture is not intended to be complete, and many interesting details will be omitted. Some of these may be described in subsequent papers covering departmental practices. The principal operations of Cyprus Mines Corp. are in Cyprus, where it has leasehold concessions from the Cyprus Government covering about 50 square miles. It holds additional areas under "Prospecting Permits." The consideration for the concessions is a royalty on production, coupled with minimum annual rentals. Cyprus is a British Colony in the Eastern end of the Mediterranean with an area of about 3000 square miles and a population of about 400,000, of which 65 pct may be classed as Greeks on the basis of language, religious training, and traditions. About 25 pct are Moslems, principally of Turkish extraction. Prevailing languages are Greek and Turkish. A large proportion of the supervisory and administrative staff and practically all of the skilled and unskilled craftsmen and laborers are drawn from the native population. The "overseas" staff constitutes not more than 2 pct of the employees. The majority of these are from the United Kingdom, the British Dominions and Colonies. About one-third are from the United States of America. The topography of the Island is rugged, with mountains and foothills covering more than two-thirds of the area. Between the Kyrenea range rising to 3000-ft elevation, along the north coast, and the Troodos range (maximum elevation 6400 ft) occupying the southwest half of the Island, lies a cultivated rolling plain, the "Mesaoria," dry in summer and watered only by the winter rains and by scanty irrigation from small mountain streams and wells in the spring and summer. Climate and natural vegetation are characteristic of semi-arid conditions. The "urban" population, about one-fourth of the total, lives in the five port towns, Famagusta, Larnaca, Limassol, Paphos and Kyrenia, and in the capitol Nicosia, near the center of the Island. The suburban population lives almost entirely in villages or small towns, with very few people residing in isolated country homes.

Over the past few years, metallic arc welding has been extended to steels of the hardenable type. As compared with other methods of fabrication, production has been facilitated, service performance frequently has been improved, and the overall results have been so favorable that engineers and production men have placed great emphasis on this application of welding. The metallurgist and welding engineer, however, have been confronted with new problems, since, for one reason, the harder steels are more apt to crack and special precautions must be taken if sound joints are to be procured. Some of the factors that are pertinent to this problem are metallurgical, and it is an object of this contribution to discuss steel manufacture and processing methods and to show how their control assists in reducing the hazard of cracking. By this time, the problem of cracking— specifically underbead cracking, or "hard cracks," or parent-metal cracks-—is well known, and a large amount of work has been published, both here and abroad, dealing with this subject.' The tests described are made under restraint to facilitate cracking and arc so designed that a semiquantitative, or at least a relative, value of the cracking tendency is obtained. As one would expect, it has been reported that the incidence of cracking increases with the carbon and alloy content of the steel. More specifically, the cracking tendency is said to increase with the hardenability of the steel, though it is now recognized that the situation is not so simple. The phenomenon itself, on the other hand, has been but loosely described, and it is in only broad generalizations that this cracking has been related to steel metallurgy. Thus, while it has been abundantly demonstrated that the hardenable aircraft steel, S.A.E. 4130, must tend to crack when are-welded, the problem still remains of why two lots of the same composition and the same hardenability can vary so greatly in cracking tendency, or what it is about the prior metallurgical history that so strongly affects the results. Further, while the efficacy of preheating and postheating in preventing cracking is recognized and utilized in production, the mechanism by which they function seems not to have been described. These points are thought to be significant in the production of steel for fabrication by metallic arc welding and, hence, of interest to mill and process metallurgists and welding engineers. Consequently, it is another object of this paper to discuss the mechanism of parent-metal cracking, including the influence of the condition of the steel and the control of cracking by manipulation of the time-temperature conditions during and after welding. A new method of rating the cracking tendency is also discussed, and the results of the test are related to steel composition and structure or prior history. It can be concluded that rock mechanics instrumentation, geologic mapping, and operations research in combination will produce an accurate estimate of tunnel support requirements for establishing a steel-set load prediction model. This estimate can be used to increase safety and to reduce tunneling costs. Unnecessary supports can be eliminated; overloaded or insufficient supports can be replaced on a more scientific basis than previously possible. Only a limited number of measurements are required to develop a steel set load prediction model. The results of this study can be applied generally; but, every tunnel must be considered as a separate problem. The construction and geologic variables which were found to be significant in the prediction of rock loads in this tunnel were: steel section modulus, set blocking points, percentage of alteration, relative degree of faulting, relative water condition, distance to the nearest fault, and average joint spacing. INTRODUCTION A combined engineering geology and rock mechanics program was performed throughout the Straight Creek tunnel pilot bore in Colorado in order to develop a technique for estimation of steel tunnel support loads. The technique involves the construction of a statistical model from measured steel set loads, geologic and construction factors. The aim of the investigation was to produce a set of charts, based on these factors, which could be used by a trained man equipped with a hand lens and measuring tape, to specify a safe and economical steel size and set spacing. In order to be of practical value the measured parameters had to be rapidly measurable and capable of quantification. It was apparent from the beginning that quantitative values for many of the geologic factors would have to be arbitrary. It was impossible to ascertain in advance which of the readily determi-nable geologic and construction factors significantly affect steel set loading. As the investigation progressed the number of observations was systematically reduced in order to determine the minimum amount of data which would be necessary for a significant mathematical model. This paper presents an analysis of all the variables measured at each instrumented steel set. The statistical significance of the measured variables was determined. On the basis of this determination, a mathematical model was constructed and charts were prepared to select and space the steel tunnel supports at any given point in the tunnel. Once the effect of geologic and construction factors on set loading is sufficiently established, it is possible to exert close control over the selection of steel tunnel support size and spacing. The magnitude of this rock mechanics program can be appreciated when it is known that there were 44 instrumentation stations for which steel set loads were measured. For each of these sets there were three construction variables recorded, and nine geologic parameters determined (Table I). A rough approximation of the cost for both the collection and reduction of the data would be $50,000. This is in addition to the cost of geologic mapping.

Discovery of scandium in the Vitro solvent extraction plant for uranium led to commercial recovery of the byproduct. Micro amounts of scandium were extracted with uranium by dodecyl phosphoric acid, but failed to follow ura-niuminto the hydrochloric acid strip solution and were eventually concentrated in the organic extractant. A fluoride strip system was developed to recover scandium from the solvent in concentrated form. High purity scandium oxide was then prepared in multi-pound lots by chemical separation techniques. The plant recovery operation, final product purification, and analytical procedures are described. Scandium is a pseudo-rare earth which is truly rare and expensive. It has special properties which may make it desirable even at the present price of $2750 per lb. Recently the price was lowered from $5000 per Ib which had prevailed since 1952, and it is anticipated that usage will be stimulated because of the lowered price. This metallic element is distributed widely in trace amounts in the rocks of the earth's crust. In addition to micro-amounts found in most uranium ores, concentrations of 50 to 100 ppm have been found in Colorado ferberite ore, lateritic nickel ore, heavy sandstone from Utah, Wyoming, and New Mexico, and various zircon sands and monazites from the western part of the U. S. Scandium has been found as an essential constituent of very few minerals, the most important being thortveitite, a scandium silicate. At the present time, this mineral commands a price more than twice that of gold. Chemically, scandium is in group 3A of the periodic table. It is closely associated with yttrium and the rare earths which it strongly resembles in its reactions. It has a valence of three and will form an insoluble hydroxide, fluoride, or oxalate under proper conditions, similar to the rare earths. Eight years before its discovery, scandium was predicted by Mendeleef who ascribed his eka-boron with properties nearly identical to the actual properties of scandium. Its position as the element with Atomic No. 21 and Atomic Weight 44.96 places it between calcium and titanium in Period 4 of the chart. The successful commercial application of scandium must depend on unique properties to justify use of this high cost substance. Greater consumption would allow additional price reductions, but scan- dium will remain a relatively high-priced commodity because of its inherent scarcity. Research reportedly has been oriented toward use of scandium as an agent to achieve high-temperature, low-density alloys with magnesium and tantalum.' Also, the U.S. Air Force sponsored a project for production of research amounts of pure scandium metal.' The oxide has been used experimentally in electronics, ceramics, and metallurgy. The various aspects of scandium are well covered in recent publications.s-5 CONCENTRATE RECOVERY Small amounts of scandium exist in uranium ores and are dissolved during an acid leach yielding up to 0.001 gpl Sc2O9. When Vitro converted their uranium plant from phosphate precipitation to solvent extraction: scandium was found to follow the uranium into the dodecyl phosphoric acid solvent (DDPA). However, scandium did not strip with uranium from the DDPA in hydrochloric acid, but remained in the solvent. Therefore, a concentration of scandium built up in the organic phase. Residues from the solvent were spectrographed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and found to contain scandium. As a result of this discovery, provisions were made in the plant for recovery of scandium-bearing concentrates. Solvent extraction of uranium was added to a conventional acid leach process in a typical installation? The ore was crushed and ground, and then leached with dilute sulfuric acid. Addition of an oxidant such as sodium chlorate insured conversion of uranium minerals to a soluble form. At this point, the slurry was chemically reduced by a sulfide, such as sodium hydrosulfide, to remove substances such as ferric iron and molybdenum which were partially extracted by the solvent. The solids-liquid separation was accomplished by a four-stage counter cur rent decantation (CCD) thickener circuit. This paper mentions briefly the history of hydraulic jetting as applied to perforating and fracture initiation. It points out the advantages of hydraulic perforation and undercutting as an aid for creating a fracture at the point desired rather than depending upon the weakest point in the formation for breakdown. It describes early experimental work with jet nozzles in search of better nozzle materials. The effect of splash-back damage and its subsequent influence on jet body and tool design during this work is discussed. A series of cutting-rate curves for jets cutting steel and steel-cement-formation combinations is presented to show the effect of hydrostatic head and the point of diminishing returns with respect to cutting time. There is a series of photographs showing various types of rock formation in which perforation and undercutting tests were made. These stones were drilled and the casing cemented in place as in an actual well. The casing was perforated and circularly cut as if preparing for a fracturing job. The conclusion reached in the paper is that hydraulic jetting with sand-laden fluid can be used for perforating and undercutting casing, cement and formation rock for the intended purpose of inducing the formation to fracture at a desired point. INTRODUCTION Hydraulic jetting as a means of cleaning a formation during acidizing has been used for many years. The acid-jet gun was used to clean formation and for drilling cement from casing with acid. This tool was dropped to a seating ring installed on the tubing and could be retrieved by reverse circulation or wire line. In this process, the fluids were directed against the formation to clean and penetrate beyond the mud-damaged area. After the development of the hydraulic fracturing process, interest in jetting the formation with abrasive-laden fluid was renewed. The cutting action of abrasive fluid on pumping equipment, which is a well known problem, has been utilized to perforate and undercut casing, tubing and formation. In this process, surface areas are provided in the formation on which the frac- turing pressures may work to produce a fracture at the location desired. EQUIPMENT The tools used consist of bodies containing two, three or four jets in a single horizontal plane equally spaced around the circumference. The body is threaded to the end of a string of tubing and run into the well. In addition, an expendable tool is available that may be left in the hole after perforating and produced through until necessary to remove the tubing. The bottom of each tool is equipped with a ball-type back-pressure valve. The ball can be reversed to the surface and recovered. This allows reverse circulation so that loose sand which accumulated below the tool while jetting may be removed before the fracturing job. The present jetting tools are of such length that, when screwed together, the jets fall on 12-in. spacing. ANALYSIS OF THE PROBLEM Early work with nozzles indicated that hardened steel was not a suitable material for jets and that more durable material would be required. Ceramics were tried and found to be superior to steel but still too shortlived for most applications. Tungsten carbide, which was tried and found to be the best material available, is now being used for jet nozzles. Analysis of the problems presented by this process indicated that the following information was needed. 1. The effect of submergence on a jet stream and the effect of submergence on the cutting rate of a jet stream. 2. The cutting rate and depth of a jet stream in steel. 3. The cutting rate in various formations and point of diminishing returns. 4. Size of hole or slot cut in a pipe by a given jet. 5. Fluids and sands used. 6. The flow of various weight fluids through the jet nozzle and the discharge coefficients. 7. The type cut formed in the formation by the jet stream. 8. The stretch and contraction of tubing due to temperature and pressure. The cutting effect of a jet stream on a target in the atmosphere is rapid and spectacular as most of the

AT Dominion Steel & Coal Corp. it has long been recognized that continued mechanization of mine operations is necessary in the Pictou, Cumberland, and Sidney coal fields of Nova Scotia. The varied physical conditions in these fields call for special consideration of individual cases before planning is finalized. Because standard equipment cannot be procured which would operate successfully, many experiments have been necessary over the years to keep pace with the progress made in other countries. There are two mines, producing 2000 tpd, located in the Pictou coal field. The field is badly distorted and crossed by many faults. Seams are highly inclined and irregular and vary in thickness from 5 to 40 ft. Entries are difficult to maintain because of squeezing of the coal. ribs and movement of the roof and pavement. Output from the three operating mines in the Cumberland field is 3000 tpd. The field is highly inclined, inclination varying from 12° to 32°. Overlying beds consist of shales and massive sandstone lenses of extreme toughness and are responsible for bumps when the stresses are relieved by extraction. At greatest depth these are among the deepest coal workings in the world. Depth of cover ranges from 2300 to 4000 ft. This prohibits room-and-pillar working and necessitates longwall operation. Working of contiguous seams concurrently to maintain output increases the already difficult conditions. The Sydney field, with a frontage of about 30 miles, is the most important of the Nova Scotia coal fields. With the exception of one small area it is now wholly submarine. Output is approximately 21,000 tpd. Seams are 21/2 to 8 ft thick, and cover in the areas varies from 600 to 2300 ft, with an average of 1500 ft from sea bottom to the top of the seam. The seams dip in a seaward direction, pitches ranging from 6" to 4.0". The shoreline is the last place of entry to the seams and distance from the bank to the working faces is generally over 3½ miles, in some cases as much as 6½ miles. Ventilation is a problem and requires the construction of large permanent airways. Getting and Loading Coal: In 1925, in view of heavy pressures exerted by thickness of cover overlying the seams, roadways and pillars of the room-and-pillar system being worked began to break up and coal was lost. It was decided that a change in the method of extraction in areas with heavy cover was necessary, and experiments were made with many short walls and longwalls varying between 90 and 250 ft. Trial and error proved that the best operating length was between 400 and 500 ft, delivering all coal to the dip, with roadways to the face following a level course. The change-over was gradual, and the technique of roof control developed with the system, so that falls to the face are now very infrequent. An advantage of longwall mining is that it yields 95 pct extraction, especially important in coal seams of high quality or in seams where faults or disturbances restrict the workable areas. This percentage of extraction is based on the fact that the longwall advancing system takes development faces where pitch permits instead of driving headings and leaving roadway pillars. This system yields high tonnage during development and limits loss in extraction to duff left during operations. Accompanying disadvantages, on the other hand, are the heavy construction cost of main roadways and the necessity of driving all new flank face roadways through the gob. If the main roadways are driven through the solid, and large enough pillars are left on each side for protection against flank face weights, then the width of solid coal is approximately 1700 ft. This represents 10.6 pct of the coal available, or 89.4 pct extraction of the whole. These pillars, however, are of such size that they provide a useful pillar drawing area as a final operation of the mine. It may be that although the seam cannot be generally mined by the room-and-pillar method, it can be adapted to

The mechanism of materials transport was studied in a model experiment in which a silver sphere was sintered to a silver plate under an applied external stress near 800° C. For this purpose the rate of growth of the neck between the sphere and the plate which is proportional to the strain rate of the creep process involved in a neck growth was determined by measuring the change in electrical resistance of the away. This rate of neck growth will depend upon the magnitude of the applied external stress. By measuring the rate just before and just after a change in the external load and therefore the applied stress, the relationship between strain rate and stress can be derived. For material transport by slip in a pure metal it is expected that the strain rate should be proportional to the 4.5th power of the stress, while for transport by diffusional flow the strain rate should be proportional to the first power of the stress. It was found that for stresses above 5 X 10' dynes per sq cm (70 psi) the exponent in the stvain rate-stress relationship was near 4.5 while for a stress of 0.7 x 108 dynes per sq cm (10 psi) an exponent of 1.8 was determined indicating that under the conditions of the experiment the transport mechanism for creep in silver shifts from diffusional flow to slip in the region of 0.7 x 106 dynes per sq cm (10 psi). The importance of these findings for an understanding of the mechanism of material transport in conventional sintering (without an external load) is pointed out. In a paper by Early et al.,' the mechanism of material transport during sintering was treated as a creep process. It was pointed out that two possible types of creep processes could operate during sintering. In one of these material transport takes place by vacancy diffusion due to a gradient in chemical potential. The vacancy sinks in this diffusion process may be either grain boundaries, as in Herring-Nabarro microcreep, or regions beneath a surface of small radius of curvature. The diffusive transport may be by volume, grain boundary, or surface diffusion. In the other mechanism, creep takes place by slip, i.e., dislocation motion with its rate generally controlled by dislocation climb. One method of distinguishing between these two modes of materials transport is to investigate the creep rate, i.e., the rate of material transport as a function of stress. For material transport by vacancy diffusion, the creep rate is proportional to the stress.' For creep by slip, controlled by dislocation climb, the creep rate is proportional to a power of the stress. For pure metals this power is 4.5;374 for dispersion-strengthened material a fourth power relationship can be derived.5 This difference in the stress dependence of the strain rate is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1, in which the logarithm of strain rate is plotted vs the logarithm of the stress for material transport in a pure metal by vacancy flux and by dislocation climb. The stress range in which the two types of material transport overlap would be expected to be relatively small. In the experiments described by Early and coworkers compacts pressed from spherical copper powder were sintered isothermally under an applied axial external load in a dilatometer. During sintering the magnitude of the applied external load was changed and the rate of axial shrinkage of the compact before and after the load change determined. In order to find the stress dependence of the strain rate the magnitude of the stress acting on the neck area between the spherical particles before and after the load change had to be calculated. This stress is the resultant of the stresses due both to the externally applied load and to surface tension. The stress due to surface tension is a function of the geometry of the powder compacts. It can be determined, at least for simple geometrical arrays,'76 but it is difficult to obtain exact values of the stresses for actual powder compacts when only average values of particle diameters and of neck diameters between particles are available. The calculation of stress and the strain rate-stress relationship is therefore only very approximate.

Measurements of grain boundary sliding were made on polycrystal and bicrystal tensile creep specimens of Al-2 pct Mg at 500oand 700oF. Grain and pain boundary orientation factors were studied with respect to their effect on the magnitude and direction of grain boundary sliding. It was concluded that a large part of the observed sliding may be caused by the operation of slip crossing the grain boundaries. Supporting evidence for this model from other investigations is also given. GRAIN boundary sliding in metals during elevated temperature deformation has frequently been thought of as an independent mechanism with its own characteristic stress, temperature, and structure dependence. Further, it is common to regard the grain boundary as the weak link during creep deformation since: 1) the strength of apolycrystallinemetal, as meas-sured by creep rate or rupture life, decreases at\a more rapid rate when sliding comes into action, and 2) grain boundary sliding, as revealed by "boundary darkening" and fold formation is often the first visible deformation. On the other hand, more quantitative observations, in both polycrystals and bicrystals, have shown boundary deformation to be closely related to the over-all deformation of the specimen. The curve of grain boundary contribution to elongation vs time takes a shape similar to that of the total creep curve,',' and the apparent activation energy for sliding appears in most cases to have the same value as that for total creep.3 In order to reconcile these observations, one is left with these possibilities: 1) The grain boundary and grain deformation rates are both controlled by the same rate limiting processes. 2) The rate of sliding is limited by accommodation deformation in the grains. 3) Sliding is the consequence of grain deformation. 4) Grain deformation is dependent on prior grain boundary deformation. Alternatives 2) and 3) would view grain boundary sliding as occurring in series with another deformation process which could be rate controlling. McLean prefers item 3) as the sliding basis,4 where subgrain rotation results from dislocation accumulation in the substructure at the grain boundary. Crussard and Friedel's5 treatment of grain boundary migration considers that dislocations are forced into the grain boundary and are dissociated into dislocations with Burgers' vectors nearly parallel to the grain boundary. The movement of these partial grain boundary dislocations then produces the sliding. The results of this investigation have indicated alternative 3) to be the most appropriate and it is this aspect of grain boundary sliding which will be analyzed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Three types of tensile creep tests were employed in this study: (I) A constant load test of one very coarsegrained polycrystalline specimen at 500° F, 3600 psi, 1 pct per/hr strain rate to examine the grain and grain boundary orientation factors in grain boundary sliding. (II) Constant strain rate tests of polycrystalline specimens at 510o and 715o F, 2 pct per/hr strain rate to determine the grain boundary contribution to elongation at very low total strains. (m) Constant strain rate tests of bicrystals of various grain and grain boundary orientations at 500°F, 2 pct per/hr strain rate to obtain further information on the orientation effects in grain boundary sliding. The material used in the tests was a high-purity Al-1'.92 mg alloy, kindly furnished by Alcoa. Its composition is given in Table I. The alloy is a solid solution at the test temperatures. The coarse grained polycrystalline specimen for test (I) was prepared by recrystallizingthe machined specimen, straining it about 1pct intension at room temperature and annealing at 900°F for 8hr. The constant strain rate specimens (11), with an 178 in. sq. by 1/2 in. long gage section, were cut from 1/8 in. thick sheet of cold rolled and annealed (8 hr at 1000oF) material. The latter specimens were supported in a special jig during the milling operations to avoid any bending, and the gage section was subsequently heavily electropolished to remove the cold-worked surface layer. The solubility of nilrogen in liquid binary alloys of iron with Litanium. zivconium, columbium, vanndiurn, and tantalum was measured for alloy composiLions up to the solalbility limils of lhe alloy nitrides. All five alloying agents were found to decrease markedly the activity coefficient of nitrogen in liquid ivon. The metal/nitvogen mole ralios in the alloy nitrides formed were generally .found to be slighlly greater than 1.0, but in no case greater than 1.5. From the experimental data, the standard free energies of fortmation of titanium and zir-conium nitrides have been calculated for the Lemperaluve range 1550° to 1750 C. The solublily Products for columbium, tantalum, and vanadium nitrides are also reported. A number of research investigations have examined the effect of refractory metals on the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron. Although data on zirconium are not available, investigators are in agreement that titanium, vanadium, columbium, and tantalum markedly increase the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron. This fact alone makes desirable the acquisition of thermodynamic data for these elements in liquid iron. Since refractory metals are known to be stable nitride formers, they have been suggested as steel denitrifying agents, and some of their nitrides have recently been considered as containment materials for liquid iron and iron alloys. Most available thermodynamic data for these metals relate to their dilute concentrations, but effective thermodynamic treatment of these applications requires data at concentrations near the solubility limit of the alloy nitride. Although some work has been done at relatively high alloy concentrations in liquid iron (particularly for vanadium 2,3 and titanium 2,4), the results have been somewhat contradictory. Disagreement may be partly attributed to the fact that the compositions of most refractory metal nitrides have been shown to be nonstoichiometric, and to vary 2,5-8 depending on the temperature and nitrogen gas pressure with which the solid nitride phase is in equilibrium. One purpose of this study consequently has been to determine the compositions of the refractory metal nitrides precipitated from a liquid iron solution. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Rao and Parlee2 and Evans and Pehlke 9 have discussed the technique for measuring the solubility product of an alloy nitride phase in liquid iron by finding the point of departure of the nitrogen solubility from Sieverts' law. The method consists of measuring the solubility of nitrogen in a melt of iron containing a known concentration of a second metal as a function of the nitrogen gas pressure over the melt. In this study the second metal was one of the refractory metals titanium, zirconium, columbium, vanadium, or tantalum. When the nitrogen pressure at which the refractory nitride forms is reached, a deviation of the measured solubility of nitrogen in the melt from Sieverts' law is observed in the form of a "pressure halt." The concentration of nitrogen in the melt associated with this breakpoint in the nitrogen-absorption curve is then used to calculate the nitride solubility. The Sieverts method was used to measure nitrogen solubility as a function of nitrogen pressure and temperature. The experimental equipment for this technique has been previously described in detail. 1,9 Charge materials used were vacuum-melted high-purity iron (Ferrovac-E) and the best commercial grades of the refractory metals obtainable (in all cases at least 99.8+ pct pure). Recrystallized alumina crucibles were used to hold all melts except those containing zirconium, for which zirconia crucibles were necessary. Temperatures were measured by a disappearing-filament type optical pyrometer sighted vertically downward on the melt surface through a 1/4-in.-diameter sight hole in the crucible lid. By means of a technique previously described, 9 in which the refractory-metal nitride was precipitated at one temperature then redis-solved by raising the temperature 50°C and precipitated again at a higher temperature, it was possible to obtain data over a temperature range of up to 200°C on a single melt. W-hile the litle of this paper embraces the entire West Coast, the author, in the interest of simplification, has confined the discussion to California—particularly the central section. California's population has risen 45 pct since 1940. Its electric requirements have also increased, not only because of the growth in industry and population but also because of the widespread tendency of all types of electric consumers to use more electricity than ever before. The growth of California's electric utilities is shown by published data covering operations of three of its large systems and is given in Table 1. New Capacity Steam Driven In meeting these additional electric loads there has been a substantial increase in generation from fuel burning plants as shown by the published energy statistics given in Table 2. Increased Fuel Oil Consumption A study of construction plans of the three electric utility systems named in Table 2 clearly shows that expected new electric loads are to be met, to a large extent, by new steam generating capacity as shown by Table 3. D. D. Smalley, Vice President of the Pacific Gas and Electric Co., in an address before the Pacific Coast Electrical Association in June 1948, stated that California utilities plan to meet new electric loads through greater use of steal11 plank and that in 1951 approximately 45 pct of the area's electric production would be by steam as compared to 33.6 pct in 1946. He stated that if load growth develops as expected and if the year 1952 is dry, thereby requiring high load factor steam operation, the Pacific Gas and Electric Co. would need the equivalent of nearly 25 million barrels of fuel oil. Federal Power Commission reports show that the energy input to the Pacific Gas and Electric Co. system was approximately one billion kilowatt-hours greater in 1947 than in 1946. They also show that the steam plant operating capacity factor in 1946 was approximately 35 pct; in 1947 it, was 72 pct due, probably, to the extreme drought. able 3 shows that Pacific Gas and Electric Co. now has under construction 327,000 kw of hydro capacity which, by 1950, will bring its total hydro generating capacity to 1,313,899 kw. In addition to hydro capacity under construction that company also has 975,000 kw of steam generating capacity under construction, which by 1951 will bring its total steam capacity to 1,560,834 kw. If it is assumed that this total steam electric capacity is operated at a capacity factor of 45 pct, in 1951, over 6 billion kilowatt-hours would be generated. If the load growth on the Pacific Gas and Electric system continues at the current rate of approximately one billion kilowatt-hours per year and if it is assumed that 70 pct of this increase would be generated by steam (30 pct assumed to be generated by hydro facilities with average water conditions), the steam electric production in 1960 would amount to 12 billion kilowatt-hours, which would require fuel the equivalent of 24 million barrels of oil or 6 million tons of coal. Government Projects Inadequate Much has been written with respecl to the plans of the Department of Interior in regard to the installation of hydroelectric plants as a part of multipurpose dams relating to reclamation. flood control, and power generation. An examination of the effect of such plans on the power supply for central and northern California is of interest. The Depart,ment of Interior now has five 73,000 kw units at its Shasta hydro plant on the Sacramento River. It now appears that its three 25,000 kw unit Keswick hydro plant on the same river will be available during the winter of 1949 to 1950. Its estimates show that in a dry year there is sufficient water for operation of Shasta units at an average load factor of 36 pct and Keswick units at a load factor of 41 pct. It is also giving consideration to the development of the Pine Flat and Haas hydroelectric plants on Kings River for generating capacities of 45,000 kw each. The discovery of a Carlin-type gold deposit at Cortez, Nevada, in 1966 can be attributed directly to the use of geochemical exploration techniques. Most mineral deposits owe their discovery to geologic concepts, geologic analysis, and luck, but at Cortez, geochemistry as an exploration tool played the clearly dominant role in discovery. Of course, the economic significance of the discovery had to be determined by exploration and development drilling. The story of the discovery began in 1959 when field work was initiated on a new project, "Geochemical Halos Utah and Nevada," by R.L. Erickson and A. P. Marranzino for the US Geological Survey. The Cortez district was selected for geochemical work because it was an area with good geologic control where we could address the problem of how to prospect in barren outcrops for concealed ore deposits in potentially favorable structures (buried thrust zones) or favorable host rocks in the subsurface. Geologic mapping of the Cortez 15-min quadrangle, just being completed by Gilluly and Masursky (1965), showed that the quadrangle contained excellent exposures of both the upper and lower plates of the Roberts Mountains thrust fault, a major structural feature of north-central Nevada. Roberts (1960) had noted that a number of mining districts were associated with windows in the thrust. In 1959, Erickson and Marranzino did some reconnaissance rock sampling and spring-water sampling in the siliceous clastic rocks of the upper plate of the thrust. Results of this reconnaissance prompted a full-scale sampling program in 1960 in the upper plate rocks on the west flank of the Cortez window. Results of the investigation showed that anomalously high concentrations of metals occur in the upper plate rocks, and further, that the distribution of metals is fault controlled and shows a pronounced zoning pattern (central copper zone; intermediate zinc, copper, and lead zone; and outer arsenic zone). The anomalies were interpreted as primary leakage halos that originated from metal occurrences in the thrust zone or in carbonate rocks below the thrust and moved upward along normal faults that cut both upper and lower plate rocks. Erickson gave a talk about these anomalies in the summer of 1961 to the local AIME Section in Reno, Nevada; two short reports were published that year-" Geochemical Anomalies in the Upper Plate of the Roberts Thrust Near Cortez, Nevada" (Erickson et al., 1961) and "Hydrogeochemical Anomalies in Four Mile Canyon Near Cortez, Nevada" (Erickson and Marranzino, 1961). These releases prompted blanket staking in the area by several small companies. In 1963, geologic and geochemical mapping were started by the USGS in the lower plate carbonate rocks of the Cortez window west of the quartz monzonite stock at Mount Tenabo and north of the old townsite of Cortez. The results of the work showed anomalously high concentrations of arsenic, antimony, and tungsten in jasperoid, fracture filling, and shear zones in Silurian and Devonian carbonate rocks. The anomalous area was about 1.6 km (I mile) long and 300 m (1000 ft) wide. A brief report, "Geochemical Anomalies in the Lower Plate of the Roberts Thrust Near Cortez, Nevada" (Erickson et al., 1964a), was published in 1964. During this same time period, 1959-1964, several exploration or mining companies were active in the general area (chiefly mapping geology and acquiring property). In 1964, American Exploration and Mining Company (Amex) concluded that the entire Cortez district was worthy of an extensive exploration effort involving drilling as well as geologic, geophysical, and geochemical studies. To carry out the program, Amex formed a joint venture group with the Bunker Hill Company, Vernon Taylor, Jr., and Webb Resources. Their early efforts were directed to the upper plate rocks and to the lower levels of the old Cortez silver mine. The group also drilled some shallow rotary assessment holes adjacent to the area of the arsenic, antimony, tungsten anomaly in lower plate carbonate rocks described in Erickson et al. (1964a). Assay results from these holes offered little or no encouragement to the joint venture group. Splits of these drill samples were made available to the USGS. Experiments on single particles show that the amount of material created during impact that is finer than any chosen size is proportional to the energy of the impact. As the underlying principle of comminution, it might be stated that each unit of energy input to a given comminution system tends to add to the system an identical assembly of new particles and subtract an equivalent volume of larger particles. Thus, two of the consequences of the fact that each unit of energy tends to add identical assemblies of new particles to the system are: 1) on continued application of energy the total charge in any batch comminution system tends to assume the characteristics of this assembly, and 2) the process of comminution may be described by a relationship such as E = Ak-a. Recently Schuhmannl presented a theory of comminution which puts rational perspective on the extensive controversy surrounding most of the existent theories of comminution. With hindsight the origin of controversy can be ascribed to a relatively simple circumstance. In general, a progressive shift of a size distribution curve towards finer sizes is observed as energy is added to a comminution system. It is also observed that, with continued grinding, the size distribution curves usually change and appear to approach some constant shape. Inves-tigators generally felt that an appropriate method of relating and generalizing such data would be to consider the hypothetical case where particles in the system were uniformly subjected to comminution such that each of these particles, receiving its proportion of input energy, was transformed into a number of smaller particles of uniform size. Since the changes in shape of the size distribution curves during size reduction were clearly associated with the coarse particles in the system, it was also assumed that these changes accounted for little of the input energy and one could deal solely with the equilibrium shape towards which the size distribution curves tended. Although the unrealistic nature of the foregoing points of view was realized some justification was felt for such treatments since, in most cases, the resulting mathematical formulae could, by the adjustment of at most two parameters, satisfactorily describe experimental observation. Difficulties arose, however, in that the formulae required a specific influence of the feed size on the comminution process. In actual fact, the application of a feed size term in fitting experimental data was often found to be unnecessary or contrary to the above formulae. Secondarily, much discussion arose concerning the appropriate energy number that would relate the size change of one particle to the amount of comminution energy it received. As has been previously shown3 all the above theories that treat comminution as a continuous process of size reduction may be related to a proposition of the following form: dE = -Cfn [1] where dE is the increment of energy, dx is the size change, x is the particle size, and C and n are constants. It is now clear, as pointed out by Schuhmann, that Eq. 1 is inapplicable to comminution processes, since comminution cannot be considered other than as a discontinuous mixing process in which the overall size distribution of the product results from mixing, in various proportions, finished material with unfinished, and sometimes untouched, material. A striking illustration of this mixing phenomena may be obtained by comparing the size distributions of grinds in a typical batch ball mill with size distributions calculated on the basis of mixing various proportions of feed material with a ground material which obeys a power law size distribution relationship. Figs. la and lb illustrate such a comparison and the similarity of these figures indicates that mixing plays an important role in determining the overall shape of the product size distributions. Figs. la and lb illustrate, additionally, the underlying basis of the comminution theory presented by Schuhmann.' In the preliminary grinding of relatively close sized feed particles in a batch ball mill, one may visualize that, when a successful encounter of a ball with a feed particle occurs, then the particle undergoes severe size reduction and the size range in which the resultant particles reside is far removed from the size of the feed particles. Simultaneous measurements of lattice (elastic) strain by X-ray line shift method and total strain with an electrical strain gage have been carried out on polycrystalli,ne nickel with the help of a specially designed tensometer attachment for the X-ray dif-fractometer. During the initial stages of deformation, the rate of increase in lattice strain closely follows the total strain until the plastic strain sets in. From then onwards, the two strains deviate from each other and with further increase in afiplied stress the rate of increase of lattice strain eventually decreases. Depending upon the mode of unloading, both compressive and tensile strains have been observed in nickel deformed up to 0.29 pct strain. These results have been explained on the basis of the effects of clustering of dislocations and also the production and behavior of point defects during loading and unloading, respectively. POLYCRYSTALS deformed plastically in a uniaxial tension test show residual lattice strains (hereafter referred to as RLS), which broaden the X-ray line profiles and shift their peak positions.''4 It is known that uniform straining of a crystal lattice (macrostrain) produced movement of ddfraction line peaks, whereas nonuniform straining (microstrain) causes line broadening.= Though the nature and origin of RLS in deformed metals is not yet clearly understood, these are believed to be due to the presence of some form of a locked-up stress system. Several possible detailed interpretations6'" of the stress system have been proposed by various workers and common to all these interpretations is the assumption that different parts of the aggregate have different tensile yield stresses; e.g., that a part A yields under a lower applied stress than a part B. Therefore, during the deformation process, the elastic strain in A will be less than that in B, and, after completion of deformation, B will tend to contract further than A but will be prevented from doing so by the restraining influence of A. Thus, when equilibrium is reached, A will be in compression while B is in tension. Although there is general agreement on the correctness of this argument, controversy still exists as to the exact nature of the parts A and B in a deformed metal. In an alternative approach to the creation of parts A and B, many other investigators have assumed that the RLS observed in unloaded specimens are in some way connected with the lack of proportionality between lattice strain and applied stress in the region above the yield stress." cullity13 has prepared a schematic summary of the results of previous workers, mainly Smith and Wood,2'11 which suggests that, above the elastic limit, the lattice strain may increase less rapidly with respect to strain, or may even decrease with increase in applied stress. If the applied stress is then decreased, the lattice strain would decrease along a line parallel to the loading line in the elastic region and thus produce a compressive residual lattice strain after unloading. At equilibrium, to balance these compressive stresses? there would have to be regions under tensile stress which may well be the grain boundaries or the substructure walls formed during deformation. The present investigation was undertaken to gain a better understanding of the nature and origin of RLS and also to experimentally verify the salient features of this hypothesis. EXPERIMENTAL Stress and strain determinations were made with a specially constructed tensometer attachment for the X-ray diffractometer, Fig. 1: which permits the following measurements simultaneously on a sheet specimen under uniaxial tension at various stress levels during loading and unloading: a) lattice strains, E=. in a direction perpendicular to the direction of pulling (x direction) from shifts in X-ray line peak positions; b) the total strain, ex, in the direction of pulling. with the help of an electrical strain gage affixed to the back of the specimen directly below the area irradiated by X-rays: and c) the applied stress, with the help of a load cell which consisted of a calibrated stainless-steel sample of dimensions identical to those of the specimen under investigation, and to which it was coupled. Data are presented in this paper to show that addition of zirconium to sand-cast Mg-Th alloys effects a marked decrease in the grain size of these alloys which is accompanied by a significant increase in the mechanical properties over the entire range of thorium content investigated. The beneficial effect of zirconium on the strength properties is maintained at elevated temperatures up to 700°F. In addition the alloys exhibit exceptionally high creep resistance at temperatures up to 600°F. Zirconium does not greatly improve the strength or creep characteristics of extruded Mg-'Th alloys. Cerium is not a desirable addition to Mg-Th-Zr alloys. IN a previous paper,' it was shown that addition of thorium to magnesium imparts exceptionally high resistance to creep at elevated temperatures both in the sand-cast and in the extruded states. The large grain size of the sand-cast alloys, however, renders them of questionable value as engineering materials. Sauerwald² showed that the grain size can be reduced effectively by the addition of zirconium. Results of a detailed study of the properties of Mg-Th-Zr alloys over a wide range of thorium content are presented in this paper. In accordance with the preliminary findings of Sauerwald,² it is shown here that Mg-Th-Zr alloys possess the unusual combination of fine grain size and a high level of strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures. Some information on the effect of cerium on the properties of Mg-Th-Zr alloys is presented also. Effect of Th on Solubility of Zr in Molten Mg Sand-cast test bars and 3 in. diam extrusion billets of Mg-Th-Zr and Mg-Th-Ce-Zr alloys* were pre- pared according to the procedures described in the previous paper.' The zirconium was added in the form of sponge metal as supplied by the Bureau of Mines.' The maximum amount of zirconium that usually can be introduced into magnesium at the customary alloying temperature of 1350° F is about 0.7 pct. The analyses in Table I clearly show that thorium in- creases the solubility of zirconium in liquid magnesium. The tabulated zirconium contents are designated as "acid soluble;" this serves to distinguish these values from the small amount of zirconium that is not dissolved when the alloy is subjected to the action of a dilute acid solution. The "acid-insoluble" zirconium is believed to be ineffective as an alloying ingredient. The acid-insoluble zirconium contents ranged between 0.03 and 0.16 pct in the present alloys, the tendency was toward higher values in alloys with higher thorium content. In contrast to the effect of thorium, cerium decreases the solubility of zirconium in magnesium. This is shown by the three Mg-Th-Ce-Zr alloyst in- cluded in Table I and stands in agreement with the observations of Nelson and Stricter".' on Mg-misch-metal-Zr alloys. Effect of Zr on Grain Size of Mg-Th Alloys The potent effect of zirconium as a grain refiner has been demonstrated for many types of magnesium alloys.3-8 Of greatest importance to date are Mg-Zn-Zr alloys5,6,8 and Mg-mischmetal-Zr alloys.3,4,7 Zirconium has also been found to exert a marked grain-refining action on Mg-Th alloys. All the Mg-Th-Zr alloys cast in the form of ½ in. diam test bars have an exceedingly fine grain size (Table I). Reference to the previous paper' will show that binary Mg-Th alloys containing up to 6 pct Th are almost completely columnar even in the M in. diam reduced section of a test bar, and that 10 to 50 pct Th alloys have an equiaxed grain structure of 0.03 to 0.08 in. The data in Table I also show that addition of cerium to Mg-Th-Zr alloys has no effect on the grain size. In addition to increasing the strength properties, the fine grain size of Mg-Th-Zr alloys

This paper reports results of studies of sulfidiza-tion of base-metal oxides and silicates with gaseous sulfur, hydrogen sulfide gas and pyrite and of their subsequent flotation with xanthate collectors. It has been established that a 100% conversion of the oxides of lead, zinc, copper and manganese into their respective sulfides is possible and is a function of reaction time and temperature. Sulfidization of chrysocolla (with malachite and azurite inclusions) resulted in a product containing covellite, chalcocite and digenite in proportions depending on conditions of sulfidization. Reacting cassiterite with gaseous sulfur, H2S or pyrite at various reaction temperatures resulted in its partial conversion to a tin sulfide. Flotation of the products of sulfidization indicated that their behavior is similar to that of natural sulfide minerals, the recovery being a function of the con-version of the oxides to their respective sulfides. The gradual depletion of high-grade sulfide mineral deposits has turned the attention of the mineral industry to the recovery of metals from the oxides and silicates. Anionic (fatty acid) and cationic collectors have in some cases made flotation of nonsulfides possible, although, in general, flotation of oxide ores is not as yet an economic process. Consequently, many attempts have been made to sulfidize the surface of the relevant oxide mineral and thus make it amenable to to In recent years, Bautista and sollenberger4 have investigated the conversion of a number of oxides to sulfides by reacting them with molten sulfur. This paper presents the results of .investigations carried out at the School of Mineral and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Minnesota to study the flotation characteristics of some sulfidized minerals. It is divided into two parts: The first describes the sulfidization of a number of oxides and a silicate, and the second presents the flotation behavior of the products of sulfidization. SULFIDIZATION OF METAL OXIDES AND SILICATES Experimental Procedure: SULFIDIZATION WITH HYDROGEN SULFIDE GAS — Sulfidization with H2S gas was carried out in a horizontal tube furnace (Fig. 1). The temperature of the furnace was regulated by means of a Variac and determined with a chromel-alumel thermocouple. The constant temperature zone in the furnace was about 6 in. in length, and it was within this zone that the experiments were carried out. The gases employed were supplied from standard compressed gas cylinders, and passed through a glass-wool filtering tower before entering the Pyrex reaction tube. Gaseous products were bubbled through a water tower (used as a flow indicator) and excess H2S was burned off at the end of the outlet tube. Samples of reagents or minerals were placed in a 3-in. Alundum boat and inserted within the constant temperature zone of the furnace. Nitrogen gas (6 ppm O2 content) was passed through the tubes at room temperature to remove air in the tube, and continued to pass while the furnace was heating up. When the required temperature was reached, H2S was allowed to enter the tube and the supply of nitrogen was shut off. At the end of the reaction period, the reverse procedure was carried out, the samples being cooled to room temperature in a nitrogen atmosphere. The flow rate of H2S gas was maintained fairly constant in all experiments, although the rate was not determined. SULFIDIZATION WITH SULFUR POWDER - To study the sulfidization of minerals with sulfur (liquid or gaseous), samples of the mineral, together with a measured quantity of sulfur powder, were placed in a stainless steel (SS316) reaction vessel (Fig. 2). The reaction vessel was heated in a vertical resistance coil furnace, the temperature being regulated through a Variac. At the end of the experiment the vessel was cooled to room temperature before the sample was removed. Cooled products were leached with CS2 to remove any free sulfur. SULFIDIZATION OF TIN CONCENTRATES - Fifty gram samples of sulfidized tin ore were prepared by mixing -48 mesh Bolivian tin concentrate with -48 mesh Ottawa sand in various proportions and sulfi-dizing these samples with H2S in the horizontal tube

Several methods have been devised for rapid determination of sulfur in coal using a high-temperature combustion furnace. The fundamental principles of the various methods are similar but the techniques vary widely. The method described herein is no different in principle from some of its predecessors but varies considerably in technique. Originally devised to overcome the low-accuracy criticism leveled against the others, the tube-furnace method has proved successful for limited applications. Work is being done to widen the applicability of the technique. Subsequent to the work of A. Vita1 in 1920, a number of investigators have published data dealing with the rapid determination of sulfur in coal using a high-temperature combustion furnace.2-5 These, together with several unpublished methods, involve wide differences in technique although they are all similar in principle. Investigation of typical details of procedure showed that poor precision or accuracy could be attributed to one or more of the following: 1) inadequate quantity of sample to be representative, 2) a delivery tube temperature too low to confine condensation to a washable area of the tube, 3) no provision for back washing the delivery tube, 4) incomplete absorption of the sulfur compounds due to inadequate bubbler, and 5) the false assumption that all of the sulfur is evolved as sulfur dixoide. The method herein discussed is no different in principle from some of its predecessors; the differences are in technique. Although the method is rapid—a determination can be completed in 5 min— accuracy has riot been sacrificed in order to achieve speed. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK Fig. 1 shows the arrangement of the equipment. A metered volume of oxygen is passed through calcium chloride for removal of moisture, then through Ascarite for removal of carbon dioxide, and thence through a glass tee to the feed end of the combustion tube. Connected to the side arm of the glass tee is a rubber tube that is closed with a pinch clamp during combustion of a sample. The products of combustion are expelled through a Vycor bubbler, the end of which is submerged 3 cm below the surface of a 1 pct hydrogen peroxide solution contained in a 300 ml high-form beaker. At the completion of the 4-min combustion period the contents of the beaker are titrated to a yellow end point, using a methyl red indicator, with 0.05 N sodium hydroxide (or sodium tetraborate). The pinch clamp on the tube leading from the tee in the oxygen line is then opened and mouth suction applied to draw the hydrogen peroxide up into the bubbler past the ell, almost to the rubber tube connecting the bubbler to the combustion tube. This washing of the bubbler is repeated until no further acid reaction with the indicator is obtained. The hydrogen peroxide-sul-furic acid solution is then titrated to the final yellow end point. Test work conducted at the Robena Laboratory disclosed the following critical conditions that had important bearing on the precision of the method: Weight of Sample: Several series of tests wherein the sample weight ranged from 0.1 to 0.5 g of -60 mesh coal showed that the lowest variance (standard deviation squared) resulted from the use of 0.5-g samples; the variance was slightly greater when 0.3-g samples were used, and with less than a 0.3-g sample weight the variance increased rapidly with decrease in weight. Although the use of a 0.5-g sample invariably resulted in a very slight explosion as soon as the sample entered the hot zone of the combustion tube, this did not detract from the precision of the method. Temperatures: Mott and Wilkinson5 found that a combination of low temperature (1250°C) and low oxygen flow rate (less than 700 ml per min) tended to give high results due to formation of oxides of nitrogen. Although the method herein employs a much higher oxygen rate than 700 ml per min, as an additional precaution to assure accurate results, 1315°C (2400° F) is recommended as the most desirable furnace temperature. Empirical data from 91 rock excavations have been used to construct a family of slope curves on a chart relating excavation height and inclination. The highest and steepest slopes from each excavation are plotted and connected by a line. The 31 1ines appear to establish one or two geometrical slope fields through which the curves are projected. The curves apparently represent a lumped eflect of many factors too complex to be considered individually. Important factors such as geological structure or ground-water conditions can dominate the picture, but where these factors do not overshadow others, the slope chart should be useful for estimating or checking optimum inclination. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USAE) has been engaged since 1962 with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in a joint research program to develop nuclear excavation technology. The Corps is responsible for collecting the requisite data on engineering and construction problems associated with nuclear excavation. The ultimate objective is to develop a capability to use nuclear explosives as a construction tool on public works projects such as harbors and canals. The present study on empirical inclination-height curves for conventionally excavated slopes is an outgrowth of an investigation' sponsored by the USAE Nuclear Cratering Group on applicability of data from existing excavations in establishing guides for engineering judgment in crater excavation. Data were generously contributed by over 50 mining companies among other organizations. Inasmuch as several companies preferred that their contribution be anonymous, all data are treated so here. Some Factors Affecting Stability Many factors affect or are suspected of affecting the stability of excavated slopes, e.g., adverse structural orientation, degree of structural ordering, ground water, climatic conditions, mechanics of excavation, and plan-profile configuration. Such factors are lumped together in developing a slope chart. Obviously geological structure and ground water can overshadow all other factors. Where such is the case, the simplification of slope charts may give an erroneous picture (not conservative enough). A further complication results from the fact that the concept of stability may vary according to the use of the excavations. For example, slope adjustments that would be regarded as failure in a powerhouse excavation, might be tolerable in a mining operation. Mine slopes are continually being modified by further excavation, and instability that would develop in a similar permanent excavation slope over a period of years might not have time to develop in a mine. Inclination vs. Height Charts Charts of inclination vs. height for particular formations or conditions have been used in the past as an aid for designing excavation slopes. Some of these have been based upon empirical analyses of collections of data and experience. MacDonald" and Lane have presented slope tables and charts for excavated and natural slopes in relatively weak sandstone and shale. Coates' has shown an inclination-height chart for slopes in incompetent rock. Most organizations have developed slope design criteria which relate bench widths, heights, and inclinations to use in various rocks. Slope data collected in present studies can be similarly used to develop inclination-height charts; however, a plot of all slopes on such a chart shows very little because of the wide spread of the data. Reasons for the dispersion of points are: (1) many slopes are not carried at optimum inclination, particularly in mines where maintaining roadways and following irregularities of ore bodies are more important than achieving steep inclinations; (2) many engineers and geologists with varied backgrounds and viewpoints have been involved in designing these slopes; and (3) each slope is characterized by a unique combination of factors affecting stability and in turn optimum inclination. Significant curves can sometimes be constructed where the points can be grouped into related clusters from the same excavation. The essence of this approach appears when only two slopes from each excavation are considered—the highest slope and the steepest slope, connected by a line segment (Fig. 1). This reduces considerably the usable data because in many cases only one of these two slopes is available. Nevertheless, the concession seems justified. Construction of Slope Curves Ninety-one pairs of points and connecting line segments were assembled in this study. The line segments were assumed to approximate a geometrical slope field (Fig. 2), and a family of curves has been visually projected through to represent the slope field. It should be

A technique was developed for depositing single -crystal films of silicon on single-crystal sapphire substrates via the pyrolytic decomposition of SiH4/H2 mixtures. Electron diffraction and X-ray Laue reflection examinations of these films revealed single-crystal patterns. These films were characterized by measuring conductivity type, thickness, resistivity, and Hall mobility. Chemical etching, dislocation staining, and electron-microscopy examination have indicated the presence of low-angle grain boundaries and microtwinning in the silicon films. The role of the sapphire substrate with respect to its quality, orientation, surface finish, and thermal and chemical treatment was investigated. Hall mobility as a function of sapphire orientation was measured. A mobility equal to 88 pct of bulk silicon mobility was attained. Insulated-gate field-effect transistors which have a transconductance of 4000 pmho at 6 ma were fabricated using these films. THE technology of the fabrication of microelectronic circuits with active and passive components directly on a single wafer of semiconductor material has attained a high degree of perfection during the last few years. One inherent difficulty with the single-wafer approach has been undesirable coupling between components arising from the common base material. Several techniques have been developed for minimizing this coupling and obtaining good electrical isolation between components; however, these result in extra capacitance being added to the circuit. The extraneous capacitance of the connecting leads, resistors, and capacitors degrade circuit performance and limit the high-frequency operation of these circuits. Recently there has been considerable interestl-3 in the deposition of silicon films upon insulating substrates. The use of silicon as the semiconductor allows the subsequent utilization of the large amount of technology which has been developed for silicon for the fabrication of good active components. A sapphire substrate supplies an excellent insulating material which at the same time gives a thermal-conductivity improvement of an order of magnitude over glass-type substrates. This paper will describe the results obtained for the deposition of single-crystal silicon layers upon single-crystal sapphire substrates as well as the characterization of these films. I) APPARATUS The 'system used for the growth of silicon films on sapphire substrates by means of the pyrolysis of SiH4/H2 mixtures is shown in Fig. 1. The all-quartz reaction chamber is water-cooled and includes a quartz optical-flat window for use in conjunction with a 5 kw, 2.5 Mc per sec constant-temperature controlled rf generator. The temperature sensor for the rf generator is a thermopile which is focused through the quartz optical flat onto the susceptor surface. With this system the rf generator will hold the temperature of the susceptor to about +0.3°C at 1200°C. The susceptor is supported on a quartz sled inclined to the gas flow to increase the uniformity of the deposition. The water jacket surrounding the reaction chamber is used to keep the quartz wall temperature low enough to limit the decomposition of the silane to the rf-heated susceptor which contains the sapphire substrates. This eliminates the reaction of silicon with the hot quartz to form SiO which deposits out on the apparatus walls, thus obscuring vision, and interferes with the optical measurements of the temperature as well as with the growth process itself. Provision is also made for "n"- and 'p"-type doping by using mixtures of either phosphine or diborane in hydrogen which are added to the silane during the growth process. The hydrogen used is the purest commercially available tank hydrogen further purified by use of a palladium diffuser. The susceptors which were used include 1) spectro-scopically pure graphite, 2) high-purity molybdenum, 3) high-resistivity silicon using a low-resistivity insert to facilitate coupling to the rf generator, 4) silicon carbide-coated graphite. The latter two susceptor materials produced silicon films on sapphire substrates with more reproducible resistivities. Prior to silicon deposition all connecting lines as well as the reaction chamber are thoroughly flushed with argon and then hydrogen. After the hydrogen flow is set, the growth temperature is adjusted to 11009 to 1150°C, and when thermal equilibrium is reached the silane flow is started. The flow rate of the hydrogen must be fast enough so that turbulent flow occurs in the size of reaction tube used, otherwise a streaked nonuniform silicon deposit occurs. After the deposition
