A quadratic formalism is developed lor the representation of the excess free energy, and of the activity coefficients of each component of a ternary system in the vicinity of a single component selected as solvent. This formalism, in contrast to the e formalism, is thermodynamically consistent at .finite concentrations. Numerous specific systems are used as illustrations, with cross checks where possible; these systems are Fe-C-X systems in the vicinity of 1600°C and include practically all those for which reliable data are available. It is shown that this formalism is usually quite adequate to rebresent available data up to a solute concentration of 20 to 30 at. pet. It is hoped that the formalism here presented may prove useful for the treatment and tabulation of data on ternary and multi-component solutions. SINCE, as discussed in a prior paper,' we do not as yet have an adequate basic understanding of the nature of binary metallic solutions, we cannot hope to be in better position for ternary and multicomponent systems. However, the accumulation of thermodynamic data on ternary and multicomponent metallic solutions has led to an urgent need for a rational formalism for the presentation and use of such data. Notable attempts to represent the isothermal isobaric thermodynamics of ternary solutions were made by Benedict et 01.' and by Wohl.3 These attempts were directed toward developing an analytic expression adequate to encompass the entire ternary triangle, primarily for organic systems; they generally involve the power-series approach, which has been shown' to be inappropriate, in general, even for binary metallic systems. On the other hand, interest in the thermodynamics of ternary and multicomponent metallic solutions has tended to focus either on general thermodynamic relations4-10 over wide compositional ranges, or on cases where one or more components have been at rather low concentration. This latter approach has been followed by Wagner,= by chipman,11 and by Alcock and Richardson,12 and more recently in many publications by the same and other authors. It has already been shown' that the thermodynamic behavior of binary metallic systems is, in general, relatively simple only in the terminal regions. Hence, it would appear that any approach, at this time, to a simple formalism for ternary and multicomponent systems must, a fortiori, be limited to the vicinity of the major component or solvent. The present treatment is aimed to be useful for a given solvent with moderate solute concentrations ranging up to 20 or 25 at. pet and in exceptional cases to considerably higher concentrations. In order to achieve even this modest objective, it is necessary that any appropriate formalism have built into it 1) a thermodynamic consistency (at least within the desired degree of approximation), and 2) an approach at infinite dilution to Raoult's law for the solvent and to Henry's law for each solute. Let us first formulate the condition of thermodynamic consistency for a ternary system. Under isothermal isobaric conditions, we may write for the molal value G of any extensive function dG - C1 dN1 + G2 dN2 + G3 dN3 [l] where the G's are the corresponding partial molal quantities and the N's are the atom fractions. THE initial meeting on Mining Methods* opened at 10 o'clock Monday morning with Scott Turner as chairman and W. Spencer Hutchinson as vice- chairman; about 60 attending. After preliminary announcements Theodore Marvin was called on for his paper,, entitled "Rock Tunnel Methods," which has been appearing serially in The Explosives Engineer. Marvin read the introduction and called attention to the account of one or' two particularly' interesting projects, such as the. Brooklyn water supply tunnel. E. D. 'Gardner, Char1e.s S. Hurter, L. D. Lamont and Spencer P. Howell took part in the discussion, Howell commenting on the fact that, in one case cited, misfires had occurred through detonator wires 'coming in contact with the case of an unapproved flashlight, .,: and that all flashlights should be approved.

The best method for the estimation of copper in ores and secondary products is that proposed by Dr. Steinbeck* for the award offered by the Mansfeld'schen Ober-Berg-und Hutten-Direction. It is based upon the decolorization of the blue ammonia solution of copper by potassic cyanide.7 It is necessary for the accurate estimation of copper in arsenides that the arsenic be separated from the copper before the ammonia solution is made. The presence of a notable amount of arsenic renders the titration by potassic cyanide inaccurate, the end reaction being obscured by the appearance of a yellowish-green tint towards the end of the titration. The change of the color of the ammonia solution from blue to the tint caused by the presence of arsenic cannot be used for an end reaction, for the intensity and quick appearance of the latter color depend upon the amount of arsenic present in the solution. In the analysis of speise, the method of separating the copper by an oxidizing and reducing treatment in the muffle, to volatilize the arsenic, gives poor results, and there may easily be some loss of the weighed sample. The separation of the precipitated sulphides of arsenic and copper by treating with sodic sulphide, gives good results, but the process is tedious. DRAINAGE water from coal mines is probably the most serious water pollution problem today, varying in importance according to location of the mines and geological structure. Drainage may be either acid or alkaline in character. Acid discharge, the most severely detrimental to a stream, is caused by natural oxidation of the sulfuritic material (FeS2) in the strata associated with the coal seam. Since the acid is the result of a natural reaction the acid water differs because it does not cease with abandonment of the mining operations. There is no known economical method of neutralizing acid mine water or any practical method to prevent oxidation of exposed pyrite. Since production of acid from a mine does not stop when mining stops, the total quantity produced depends entirely upon the excavated areas. The increasing volume of acid water in manv mines has greatly increased operating costs. Pumping is expensive and acid mine waters are destructive of all equipment, especially metals in pumps and piping, and necessitate the use of corrosion-resistant materials. Discharge of the acid mine drainage into streams neutralizes their normal alkalinity, causes them to become acid, and produces an environment unfavorable for aquatic life and unsuited for industrial or domestic use without costly treatment. Mine drainages vary in percentage composition over wide limits, although the usual dissolved substances are ferrous and ferric iron, aluminum, calcium and magnesium sulfates, and lesser amounts of sodium, potassium and manganese sulfates and chlorides. Some alkaline discharges may contain heavy concentrations of iron as iron bicarbonate. These waters may produce iron hydroxide deposits in the receiving stream but do not cause it to become acid. In the extensive literature on acid mine water there appears to be a great deal of confusion about the importance of various components and the methods for their determination. In many instances faulty conclusions have been drawn from use of unsuitable methods of analysis. It is desirable that the factors and terms used in evaluation of analyses of mine waters should be so clearly defined that any interested person could properly appraise any analytical report. Some analysts report complete chemical analyses of mine waters and neglect to record drainage volumes. Others report only a minimum of analytical data after taking no precautions to preserve the original composition of the water during the time elapsing between collection and analysis. Some use methods of analysis intended for so-called pure waters of the potable and boiler water classes. These methods are not applicable to highly buffered waters such as mine water. Probably the most common criteria for evaluation are pH, free acidity, or acidity or alkalinity to methyl orange or methyl red, total acidity or acidity to hot phenol-phthalein, and the sulfate content. If these determinations are made on carelessly collected samples after a few days to weeks standing in warm rooms, they do not in any way represent the character of the water flowing from the mines. It is hoped that a brief discussion of the fundamental value of some of these factors may lead to a bettqr understanding of the need for more careful evaluation of mine water discharges. The term pH is one used by chemists to express relative acidity or alkalinity in terms of concentration of effective hydrogen ion in a solution. It is defined as the negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration or activity in equivalents per liter. pH = logarithm A neutral solution, which is one containing the same number of hydrogen and hydroxyl ions, has a pH of 7. As the hydrogen ions increase and the solution becomes more acid, the pH decreases toward zero; and as the hydroxyl ions increase and the solution becomes more alkaline, the pH approaches 14. When dissolved in water to a dilute solution acids like sulfuric and hydrochloric, commonly known as strong acids, ionize completely, and the pH or hydrogen ion concentration varies with molar concentration of the dissolved acid. However, in high concentrations of such acids, the pH or hydrogen ion concentration is less than the acid concentration because the acid does not completely ionize. In only very dilute solutions does the pH represent the total amount of acid that can be neutralized by an alkali. All ionization reactions are equilibrium reactions. If other chemicals are added to the solution of an acid and the added chemical produces an ion that is the same as one of the ions of the acid, the degree of ionization of the acid is altered and the pH changes to some value that represents the active hydrogen ion of the new solution. Thus if iron sulfate is added to a solution of sulfuric acid the pH increases, since the common sulfate ion suppresses the degree of ionization of the sulfuric acid and decreases the effective hydrogen ion. However, the total acidity of the solution is increased. There are two salts composed of iron and sulfate— ferrous and ferric sulfate. In these salts there is no hydrogen ion that can ionize to give an acid solution, but when they are dissolved in water, the pH is less than 7 and the solution becomes acid. This is caused by a reaction known as hydrolysis and is represented by the equations FeSO4 + 2H2O ? ECOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS IN CYANIDATION PLANT PRACTICES Ecological controls of tailing storage pond effluents are mainly concerned with mercury and residual cyanide and are critical problems for gold and silver recovery plant operators. For example, mercury for direct amalgamation of gold ore was used at Homestake until 1970 when the Federal Government acted to prevent further use thereby forcing the abandonment of this practice. However, mercury is still used at Homestake, in South Africa, and also in some Philippine and Canadian cyanide plants for barrel amalgamation of free gold gravity concentrates. The amount of mercury involved in South African practice is about 150 ounces for every 100,000 tons of ore milled and which reaches the tailings ponds. In South Africa, it is obligatory that no pond effluent be discharged beyond the mining property boundaries and waters containing mercury and cyanide must be evaporated either on the tailings pond or in specially constructed evaporation dams. In some cyanide plants such as Carlin and Cortez in the United States, all supernatant solution from the tailings ponds are returned to the plant for reuse. When all solution cannot be reused, the excess may be evaporated in shallow ponds, or by spray systems inside of the tailings dam. Such plant reuse of tailings effluent depends strictly upon the degree of contamination or "fouling" of the barren solution and tailing water with cyanicides. Foul solutions that cannot be returned from the tailings pond may be effectively cleaned up by cyanide regeneration. Cyanogens in plant solutions exist chiefly as free alkali cyanides, as zinc and copper double cyanides, as sulphocyanides, and as ferrocyanides. From the free cyanides and zinc double cyanides, substantially complete recovery of the cyanogen is easily effected. Part of the cyanogen combined with copper is also recovered; regeneration of the remainder with the cyanogen existing as sulphocyanide and ferrocyanides requires special treatment. At this stage, it would be generally more practical to eliminate the remaining cyanogen by chlorination. Ecologists have also been concerned with pollution of ground waters from cyanidation plant tailings. An accute problem is solution seepage down stream from tailings dams and strict attention to prevent or collect any seepage is a real necessity. The tolerance levels of the total cyanide content in potable water set by several U. S. and State health agencies are 10 ppb, and 20 ppb discharged into ground waters. The cyanide content so established is, strangely enough, based on the survival tolerance of fingerling trout. Decanted waste water from tailings dams may be effectively treated by the use of alkaline chlorination for the purpose of destroying all cyanide compounds. The alkaline hypochlorite used to oxidize the cyanide to cyanate is applied as such or generated within the waste solution by adding caustic (NaOH) and chlorine gas. A second chemical reaction involves complete destruction of the sodium cyanate.

IN recent years the constitution of the high-silver aluminum-silver alloys has been extensively investigated. Hansen1 has re-viewed the literature to 1935. More re-ently, Obinata and Hagiya,2 Hofmann and Volk,3 Taziri4 and Tishchenko5 have con-firmed the general features of the phase diagram in the region around 25 atomic per cent aluminum. In this paper we present the results of high-precision measurements of lattice con-stants of the silver-rich alpha solid solution in the homogeneous range and the neigh-boring two-phase regions. These results are used to establish the nature of the solid solution, the identity of directly measured densities with those calculated from lattice constants and the homogeneity limits of the alpha solid solution with respect to three different neighboring phases. A study of the earlier investigations indicated that the last two subjects in particular required new and accurate data.

Pronounced non-linear behaviour of mine backfill arises from the influence of confining pressure, cementing agent content, curing time, void ratio and water content. Past research into backfill behaviour under stress is reviewed and related to the needs for constitutive laws which can be integrated into numerical modelling for mine design where structures employ backfill support. A method for representing non-linear backfill behaviour is proposed, which is based upon numerical regression treatment of triaxial laboratory data. The non-linear behaviour observed from a program of laboratory triaxial testing of cemented hydraulic backfill is presented. The particular influence of confining stress and curing duration is high- lighted. The paper concludes by considering the alternative means of accounting for such behaviour in mine design.

A remarkably simple construction system that derives its internal stability from metal straps buried in backfill is finding diverse mine applications, ranging from rock crusher headwalls to massive slot coal storage facilities. Reinforced Earth (Re/Earth), the system trade name of Reinforced Earth Co., is proving itself 20-50% less expensive than alternative earth embankment structures, and in the case of cast-in-place concrete walls, six to seven times faster to erect. While the majority of applications are in the realm of civil engineering-projects such as retaining walls, bridge abutments, slide buttresses, and containment dikes-a growing proportion is mine related. Of the estimated 120 Reinforced Earth projects that will be completed this year, company president David P. McKittrick expects mining to account for about 20% of the business volume.

THE greater portion of the brown ore in the vicinity of Easton, along the north slope of the Lehigh Mountain or Durham range of hills, is obtained from mines instead of from open cuts or quarries, as is the case in the ore-beds in the western part of Northampton County, in Lehigh County, and in Berks County. The reasons for this method of procedure are various, and the principal causes of the shaft and regular mine system of working being adopted instead of the open air cuts, are : First, the large amount of stripping that would be necessary, as the richer and more valuable portions of the ore do not appear to be found as near the surface as those in other portions of the Kittatinny valley; second, the occurrence of the ore in regular beds, interstratified with the clay, and, to a less extent, in pockets or erratic deposits, as is the case in the mines of Lehigh County; and third, on account of many of the mines being situated at the immediate base of the Lehigh Mountain, where the surface water would be in such large quantities as to be with difficulty handled, and where the subsequent caving in of the sides of the open cut would be almost certain to expose the gneiss rock, which is water-bearing, the large quantities of water coming from which would probably drown out the ore-bed. Shafts, and a regular system of gangways and mining are therefore required by the configuration of the surface, the depth of the deposits and their geological structure. The ordinary size of the shafts is about four feet square, but where an extensive plant of pumping machinery is required the size may be increased to eight feet by six, with two compartments for the hoisting and pump-shaft respectively. A man-way, consisting of ladders with rests at intervals of twenty or thirty feet, is comprised in the pump-shaft, the wire rope being used for purposes of ascent and descent only in exceptional cases, on account of accidents which

(communication to the Secretary): Mr. Miller's improved method of the cyanide-assay for copper will, without doubt, be much appreciated by assayers and chemists who are engaged at copper mines and works. The writer, as one who, at one time, had much work of that kind to do, entertains no doubt of its practical value. In enumerating the factors which affect the accuracy of cyanide-titration, Mr. Miller omits to mention time. This I have always considered an essential one; i.e., in order to secure accuracy, I have believed it to be necessary to run the cyanidesolution at the same rate of speed in standardizing as in the titration of the samples. I have accomplished this, without the use of a time-keeper and without noticing the volume of the solution, in the following simple manner: In running the cyanide-solution from the burette, the stream was so regulated, by manipulation of the cock, that it retained its continuity for a distance of about one inch below the orifice, and, below that, broke into individual drops. This means that a constant pressure is maintained at the orifice of the burette, so that, during equal intervals of time, equal volumes of the solution pass through. The stream of cyanide-solution was left to flow in the manner indicated until the blue ammoniacal copper-solution began to show a distinct change in color, after which the cyanide was added by drops at regular intervals until the desired end-reaction. When several burettes are used they should have orifices of equal diameter; otherwise, the timefactor must be considered separately for each. In accordance with Mr. Miller's views, I have always considered the cyanide-method as of very satisfactory accuracy for all copper-assaying in which I did not employ the electrolytic method. ThIS note accompanies a study of grain structure changes in metal ingots produced by the alteration of fluid motion.1 Although the Prandtl Number of aqueous solutions is much higher than that for metals, it is quite instructive to see the simulation of freezing, as pointed out by Jackson and coworkers.2-4 Accordingly we have observed the effects of natural thermal convection, the changes induced by a steady-state rotation in one direction, and the changes under oscillation.' Temperature measurements were made under duplicate conditions whenever the visual observations appeared interesting. A solution of 15 pct NH4C1 in water was chosen. In each case the solution was preheated to 90°C in a 4-in.-diam Pyrex beaker filled to a level of about 5-in. depth and covered to prevent convective air cooling. The beaker was then placed in a container of iced brine, suitably arranged on a rotating table for movement about its cylindrical axis. Upon immersion in the brine under static conditions, fluid flow was observed near the wall of the beaker before the onset of crystallization, which generally commenced only after the temperature fell to 51.5"C. The region of flow extended about 1 mm from the wall and could not be observed elsewhere. The measured radial temperature increased sharply within 1 cm from the wall and thus over a distance considerably greater than that observed for the flow. However, we note that this difference of approximately one order of magnitude between hydrodynamic and thermal boundary layers should be expected for aqueous solutions, in contrast to metallic liquids. Beyond this layer the temperature was isothermal at a given height and in general nearly 10°C warmer than at the wall. The overall visual observation was therefore supported quite well by temperature measurement. There was also a vertical temperature gradient of nearly 2°C per cm throughout the liquid increasing from the colder bottom; this of course could not be observed visually. In the chemical reaction control regime employed in the laboratory dissolution experiments, calcined trona ore dissolves in aqueous solutions according to a first order, irreversible reaction rate. The study showed that the reaction is first order with respect to solution NagCO3 concentration. The activation energy was determined to be 20.233 kJ/g. mol with a rate constant equal to 1235 mm/s (2917 in. per min). The dissolving particle may be described by shrinking particle behavior.

In a recent paper,1 the solid-solution strengthening of tungsten and tantalum in a portion of the W-T;-MO-C~ alloy system was described. Additions of tantalum and columbium to tungsten led to significant strengthening, and the introduction of dispersions into these alloys was suggested as a means of further increasing strength. Dispersion strengthening of columbium and molybdenum alloys has been studied extensively.2-4 The approach used to dispersion-strengthen molybdenum alloys appeared equally suitable for tungsten alloys, and, therefore, a brief study was undertaken to determine to what extent the introduction of carbide dispersions would strengthen a solid-solution tungsten-base alloy. A base composition of tungsten and 10 to 12 pet Cb was selected; previous work1 had shown that the tensile strength of this solid-solution alloy was 50,000 psi at 3000°F. IT is generally understood by workers in the field of the crystal struce ture of metallic alloys that terminal solid solutions are of two types, the substitutional and the interstitial. In reviewing the literature, the work of Weiss1 on the crystal structure of the alpha copper-tin alloys wa-encountered, in which a new type of terminal solid solution was proposed. In brief, Weiss' findings showed that the density of the alloys calculated from the side of the unit face-centered cube on the assumption of simple substitution-that is, with four atoms to the unit face-centered cell-was much higher than the density measured directly. It was suggested that the assumption of four atoms to the unit cube is not valid for these alloys, and that each unit cube contained less than four atoms; in other words, that one tin atom replaces more than one copper atom, leaving some atomic positions unoccupied. Such a structure, if verified, would have far-reaching significance in the study of the crystal structure of metallic alloys. It would indicate a complexity in terminal solid solutions not hitherto suspected and might encourage work leading to the discovery of other alloys of the same type, and perhaps to types intermediate between it and the two recognized types. It is of importance, therefore, to reinvestigate these alloys with respect to the type of solid-solution structure obtaining therein.

This paper presents the results of a. study of the relationship of the electrokinetic or zeta potential to flotation phenomena. The relationship is established on the experimental evidence that mineral behavior in flotation and in cataphoresis is generally governed by the chemical properties and amount of the reagents adsorbed at mineral surfaces. Cataphoresisl-5 or electrophoresis is the name given to the movement of a charged particle in a liquid medium under the influence of an applied electric field. Mineral behavior in cataphoresis, as indicated by the magnitude and sign of its ionic charge, can be represented by the term zeta potential. In this paper, the zeta potential represents the difference in potential between the immovable liquid layer attached to the surface of a solid particle and the movable liquid layer in the body of the liquid, and is the result of the tendency of ions on the surface of the particle and within the liquid boundary layer to establish a condition of equilibrium. A high positive zeta potential means that the mineral surface is dominated by cations, a high negative zeta potential indicates domination by anions, and a low zeta potential indicates that the surface is influenced almost equally by cations and anions. In terms of observed quantities the zeta potential is given by the relation _ 4µ(300)² Z= kx in which z is the zeta potential expressed in in volts, µ the viscosity of the solution in poises, u the velocity of particles in centimeters per second, x the impressed potential gradient in volts per centimeter, and k the dielectric constant of the solution in c.g.s. units. A convenient source for the derivation of the equation is the book by Thomas. The term zeta coefficient is an expression coined to denote the difference between the magnitude of the zeta potential of a mineral suspended in solution A, and that of the same mineral suspended in solution B, which consists of solution A and an additional chemical agent, but is at the same pH. For example, the difference between the zeta potential of galena particles in distilled water and that in any chemical solution at the same pH is a zeta coefficient. Or, when the zeta potential of a mineral particle is measured first in distilled water, then in a mixture of water and copper sulphate, and finally in a mixture of water, copper sulphate and xan-thate, we can calculate the zeta coefficient

A high positive zeta potential means that the mineral surface is dominated by cations, a high negative zeta potential indicates domination by anions, and a low zeta potential indicates that the surface is influenced almost equally by cations and anions. In terms of observed quantities the zeta potential is given by the relation _ 4µ(300)² Z= kx in which z is the zeta potential expressed in in volts, µ the viscosity of the solution in poises, u the velocity of particles in centimeters per second, x the impressed potential gradient in volts per centimeter, and k the dielectric constant of the solution in c.g.s. units. A convenient source for the derivation of the equation is the book by Thomas. The term zeta coefficient is an expression coined to denote the difference between the magnitude of the zeta potential of a mineral suspended in solution A, and that of the same mineral suspended in solution B, which consists of solution A and an additional chemical agent, but is at the same pH. For example, the difference between the zeta potential of galena particles in distilled water and that in any chemical solution at the same pH is a zeta coefficient. Or, when the zeta potential of a mineral particle is measured first in distilled water, then in a mixture of water and copper sulphate, and finally in a mixture of water, copper sulphate and xan-thate, we can calculate the zeta coefficient

The reaction between manganese dioxide and molybdenite in a water- sulfuric acid medium was studied at atmospheric pressure and from 25° to 103°C. Both solids are dissolved to give, as final products in solution, Mo(VI), S(VI), and Mn(II). Stoichiornetric relationshifis are most simply represented by the equation MoSz + YMnO2 + 15H+ - HMoO-4 + 2HSO-4 + 9Mn++ + 6H20 The rate of this reaction was found to be dependent on temperature, manganese sulfate concentration, acid concentration, and, in a complex way, the surface areas of both manganese dioxide and molybdenite. Both the total amount of manganese dioxide and tnolybdenite and the ratio of manganese dioxide to molybdenite played a part in determining the over-all rate of the reaction. The effect of acid concentration on the rate was also dependent on the ratio of manganese dioxide to molybdenite. SEVERAL reports in the literature describe reactions using manganese dioxide in water-sulfuric acid media as an oxidizing agent. Nearly all previous work describes interactions between an ion and manganese dioxide, such as the oxidation of ferrous to ferric iron,' or the interaction between a molecule in solution and manganese dioxide, such as the oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde.2 Only a few references describe the use of solid manganese dioxide to oxidize another solid in sulfuric acid. One report3 states, "Manganese dioxide in dilute sulfuric acid solutions had no beneficial effect (in leaching copper from chalcopyrite), but in more concentrated acid solutions the rate of solution was about the same as that for permanganate." In 1902 a German patent4 described a process which used manganese dioxide in strong (50°Be') sulfuric acid for oxidizing chromite ores to soluble iron and chromium salts. The process consisted of mixing the sulfuric acid with the finely ground ore and manganese dioxide. The pulp was then heated to about 120°C and an electric current passed through it. The manganese dioxide apparently dissolved in the strong, hot acid solution, oxidized the iron and chromium and itself was reduced to manganese 11! then was oxidized at the anode back to manganese dioxide, and the cycle repeated. An extensive study5 of the kinetics of the oxidation of pyrite with manganese dioxide indicated that in dilute sulfuric acid solutions (about 0.1 N) and at elevated pressures the dissolution of the pyrite was brought about by air oxidation of the iron to ferrous sulfate, followed by manganese dioxide oxidation of the ferrous sulfate to ferric sulfate. The mechanism proposed by the authors involved the oxidation of the iron at the surface of the manganese dioxide. Also! the oxidation of sulfide sulfur to sulfate was credited to the oxygen in the air, not to the manganese dioxide. Single crystals of aluminum were pulled in tension in a solution of paraffin oil and stearic acid. The critical resolved shear stress did not change with the concentration of the stearic acid solution; however, the extents and slopes of Stages I and II were affected greatly. The observations lend evidence that the weakening effect of surface-active agents is controlled by the rate of desorption of the metal soap formed by the reaction of the surface-active agent and the metal surface. IT has been shown by various investigators1-" that surface-active agents markedly affect the mechanical properties of single crystals. (A surface-active agent, for the purpose of this report, is defined as a long-chain organic molecule which contains one or more polar groups. Usually, however, investigations have considered only molecules having one polar group.) In general, when single crystals are deformed in some solutions containing surface-active agents, the creep rate, Fig. 1, is increased and the yield strength is decreased. The fatigue strength has been reported to be affected also.ll Rehbinder and his asociatesl' explained the "weakening" effect of surface-active agents in terms of physical adsorption. They assumed that a large pressure was created in microcracks which existed on the surface of the crystal." Harper and Cottrell,' from their study of the effects of surface conditions, found that the deformation characteristics of zinc single crystals were not altered by a solution containing a surface-active agent unless the surface of the specimen had an oxidized surface. They concluded that the role of the polar molecule was to remove the strengthening effect of the oxide coating. Later, And-radeetBpresented additional evidence which appeared to agree with this conclusion. In contrast, Klinken-berg et al.7 reported data which confirmed the results of Rehbinder. Using zinc and cadmium crystals which had been cleaned by electrolytic polishing, a large increase in the creep rate was observed when Lle specimens were tested in a 1 pct oleic acid-paraffin oil solution. The effect of cold work on the electrical and magnetic properties of solution-treated and aged Cu-Fe alloys was studied. The electrical resistivity of solution-treated and of aged Cu-1.7 wt pct Fe samples increased by up to 25 and 140 pct, respectively, follozcing a 55 pct reduction of area. The principle contributions to the increase of resistivity of the solution-treated and aged samfiles are examined. Measurements of the .saturation induction, coercive force, and stacking fault Probability are also reported. 1 HIS paper is the second in a series which examine the behavior of the electrical and magnetic prop- erties of Cu-Fe alloys. The first paper1 was primarily concerned with the effects of thermal treatment whereas the present paper examines the effects of cold work on solution-treated and aged Cu-Fe alloys. The effects of cold work on the transformation of the coherent fcc iron precipitate to the ferromagnetic form2 and the coercive force and remanence3 have already been described, but the unusually large increases in resistivity (up to 220 pct) which occlir with cold work have not been reported previously. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The methods used for alloy preparation, heat treatment, and electrical and magnetic measurements are described elsewhere.1 The specimens, initially 4-in. lengths of 0.0625-in. diam wire, were cold worked by swaging in hardened steel dies.
